Iran claims breakthrough in Geneva talks, Vance says Tehran ignoring Trump's 'red lines'

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Iran of serious “consequences” if Tehran fails to strike a nuclear deal with Washington, as negotiators prepare for a new round of talks in Geneva. Trump said he will be involved “indirectly” in the negotiations and believes Iran is interested in an agreement but cautioned that failing to reach one could carry significant repercussions.

Donald Trump's email campaign is blurring the boundary between political communication and marketing gimmick. Over the span of last 7 days, Trump's team has blasted out several unconventional email as part of the fundraising campaign. From Valentine's day themed mails to phising mails Trump's Digital Fundraising and PR team are mixing, devotion and fear for aggressive political campaigning.

Screenshot of the subject of the mail

Just a couple of days ahead of Valentine's day, Trump's team sent out a fundraising mail with a romantic theme, a textbook moment marketing technique. The mail had a subject line, “I am asking with an open heart.” The email featured emotional messages like “Do you still love me”, “My love language is MAGA” and “I miss you”.

Screenshot of the mail

The mail read like a love note, but ultimately directed readers readers to a donation page in the guise of a poll, to prove devotion. Many recipients claim they have not signed up for the mail including writer such as E. Jean Caroll, who won an $83 million defamation lawsuit after Trump denied sexually abusing her. In 2023, a civil jury in New York found that Donald Trump sexually abused and defamed writer E. Jean Carroll. The email was reportedly sent on behalf of Never Surrender Inc. a leadership of PAC associated with former House Rep Mark Greene of Tennessee.

Another such campaign sent a tech alert, “We've detected an attempt by external filter to block all communication from President Trump”. The mail urged recipients to quickly “sync” with a supposed “secure patriot server”, which didn't solve anything but redirected to a donation page.

Both emails employs triggers, devotion and fear to create urgency among small donors. A parasocial bonding strategy that derives heavily from the advertisement appeal of, fear, scarcity, personal validation. This hyper- personalisation of politics is highly dramatised, algorithm driven and designed to discourage rational and critical thinking.

Donald Trump’s campaign faces scrutiny after Valentine’s Day and “phishing-style” emails used emotional appeals to drive small-dollar donations.

The White House's social media Valentine's Day post was brutally mocked by netizens. The White House Official account posted a picture of Donald Trump walking with Melania Trump holding hands. It was a feel-good holiday post, but it was soon hijacked by the US president’s ties to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Within an hour of the post, people flooded with comments with AI-generated pictures and memes mocking him for his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The crudest response was that a user employed the Grok AI's image generation feature to replace Melania with Epstein. Another widely circulated post was an AI-generated picture of Trump and Epstein in a candlelight dinner, gazing into each other's eyes. Splashed across the image in bright pink lettering: “Pedo Valentine Day.” A picture replaced Melania with a child, with a comment beneath it, “More accurate”. One user posted the original post of the White House with the comment, “Happy Valentine’s Day to All the Pedos We Will Protect You.” Another user dragged the first lady back into the mix, along with Trump, Epstein and Maxwell, recreating the cover image of the 90s sitcom "Friends". This crude sense of humour is showing the moral outrage of the public, but it is detrimental to the social fabric of the nation, as it is merely normalising and desensitising the gruesome and violent crimes. The Attorney General Pam Bondi had been targeted for a contentious hearing in which a photograph of Bondi revealed that her office had reviewed lawmakers’ search histories while examining the unredacted Epstein files. GOP Rep. Thomas Massie and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna have joined forces to push for the release of the rest of the files. The DOJ had released heavily redacted 3.5 million documents relating to the disgraced sex trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein. "I am committed to being the leader of transition for you so we can one day have the final opportunity to decide the fate of our country through a democratic, transparent process to the ballot box." "Javid Shah" (long live the shah)," the crowd chanted as they waved green-white-and-red flags with a lion and a sun -- the emblem of the toppled monarchy. "The Iranian regime is a dead regime," a 62-year-old protester originally from Iran who gave his name only as Said told AFP. "It must be game over." Pahlavi has urged Iranians at home and abroad to continue demonstrations against the authorities, calling on them to chant slogans from their homes and rooftops at 8:00 pm (1630 GMT) Saturday and Sunday, to coincide with protests in Germany and elsewhere. Trump had said on Friday that a change of government in Iran would be the "best thing that could happen", as he sent a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East to ratchet up military pressure on Tehran. He had earlier threatened military intervention to support a wave of street protests in Iran that peaked in January and were met by a violent crackdown that rights groups say killed thousands. "To President Trump... The Iranian people heard you say help is on the way, and they have faith in you. Help them," Pahlavi had earlier told reporters gathered at the Munich Security Conference. "It is time to end the Islamic Republic," he said. Iranian opposition divided When Iran began its crackdown on protests, Trump initially said the United States was "locked and loaded" to help demonstrators. But he has recently focused his military threats on Tehran's nuclear programme, which US forces struck last July during Israel's unprecedented 12-day war with Iran. On Sunday, a Swiss foreign ministry spokesman told AFP that Oman would host a new round of talks in Geneva next week, without providing further details. Videos verified by AFP showed people in Iran this week chanting anti-government slogans despite the ongoing crackdown, as the clerical leadership celebrated the anniversary of the Islamic revolution. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 7,008 people, mostly protesters, were killed in the crackdown, though they and other rights groups warn the toll is likely far higher. More than 53,000 people have been arrested, it added. Pahlavi had encouraged Iranians to join the wave of protests, which Iranian authorities have said were hijacked by "terrorists" fuelled by their sworn enemies, the United States and Israel. Many protest chants had called for the monarchy's return, and Pahlavi, 65, has said he is ready to lead a democratic transition. The Iranian opposition remains divided, and Pahlavi has faced criticism for his support for Israel, making a highly publicised visit in 2023 that fractured an attempt to unify opposition camps. He has also never distanced himself from his father's autocratic rule. Trump declined on Friday to say who he would want to take over in Iran from supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but he added that "there are people". As part of stepping up pressure on Ivy League institutions, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Harvard University over federal funding to the school. The Department of Justice (DOJ) accused the university of failing to comply with a federal investigation by not providing sufficient documents to ascertain whether the elite school has illegally considered race in its admission process. According to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, the data is required to ensure the admission process of Harvard remains free of discrimination, in accordance with the 2023 Supreme Court ruling that suspended the race-based affirmative actions. The DOJ further claimed that the university has not provided the applicant-level data requested nearly 10 months ago. The development comes less than two weeks after the US President Donald Trump stated that the government is seeking $1 billion in damages from Haravard to to settle federal probes into the school's polices.
