In a major setback to president Donald Trump’s trade agenda, the US Supreme court struck down several of his sweeping import tariffs in a 6-3 ruling. The court held that the international emergency economic powers act, or IEEPA, does not authorise the president to impose broad global tariffs.

President’s IEEPA Authority Rejected by Supreme Court

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Feb 20) said India will continue to face 18 per cent tariffs, even after the Supreme Court struck down sweeping reciprocal tariffs. The remarks came days after the court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that Trump's sweeping duties on imports from nearly all trading partners violated federal law. The judges held that he lacked the authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose such wide-ranging tariffs. Also read | Who is Neal Katyal? Tough day for Trump administration as US president dealt triple blow

The US Supreme Court on Friday (Feb 20) ruled against Donald Trump's tariffs, saying that the US president has exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping duties that disrupted global trade. The decision blocks Trump from using tariffs as a tool, which he used freely to achieve political goals and renegotiate trade deals with countries aligned with his economic agenda. Despite being a conservative majority, the court ruled six-three in the judgment stating that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) "does not authorise the President to impose tariffs." Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the opinion of the court while Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh dissented. “The president asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope," Roberts wrote. However, the Trump administration “points to no statute" in which Congress has previously said that the language in the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) could apply to tariffs, he said “In light of the breadth, history, and constitutional context of that asserted authority, he must identify clear congressional authorisation to exercise it," the Chief Justice remarked. He noted that any “extraordinary assertion" of such power requires “clear congressional authorisation", which Trump did not have. The court also pointed out that "had Congress intended to convey the distinct and extraordinary power to impose tariffs" with IEEPA, "it would have done so expressly, as it consistently has in other tariff statutes." Notably, the ruling does not apply to sector-specific levies that Donald Trump separately imposed on imports of steel, aluminium, and various other goods under different legal authorities. Trump has long used tariffs as a primary means of exercising power and achieving political goals, often describing them as “beautiful” and hailing duties as a way to solve major national problems, such as the widening trade deficit and rising debt. The US President even went to great lengths to use these levies as leverage, threatening long-standing partners Canada and Mexico with additional duties over policy disagreements. India has also been on the receiving end of Trump’s tariff wars; for months, New Delhi faced 50 per cent duties, among the highest in the world, before the two countries recently moved toward a new trade deal. On April 2, 2025, a date he famously proclaimed as "Liberation Day," President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14257 to launch the most aggressive trade policy in modern American history. Also Read: India, US to hold talks from Feb 23 on sealing trade deal, signing soon after Invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by declaring a national emergency over the US trade deficit, the administration imposed a universal 10% baseline tariff on nearly all global imports. This framework also introduced "reciprocal" duties reaching as high as 50% for major trading partners, aiming to counteract foreign trade barriers and revitalise domestic manufacturing.

The ruling does not impact sector-specific duties that Trump has separately imposed on imports of steel, aluminium, and various other goods.

U.S. President Donald Trump has directed government agencies, including the Pentagon, to identify and release files related to aliens, extraterrestrial life, UAP (unidentified aerial phenomena), and UFOs. Trump said the effort will provide transparency on what the U.S. government knows about extraterrestrial activity. The move has reignited global interest in Area 51, UFOs, and government disclosure debates. Officials have yet to announce a timeline for the release, but the directive marks a significant step toward declassifying long-hidden information about unidentified phenomena.

Lara Trump, Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, has claimed that the president has a speech prepared for the day he addresses the discovery of alien life. The 43-year-old was speaking on the New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast, where she stated that her father-in-law was being "really coy" when she and Eric (her husband) asked him if he knew something about extraterrestrials. On the podcast, Lara was asked about former President Barack Obama's admission about aliens in a recent interview. Talking to podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama seemingly confirmed the existence of extraterrestrials. But he changed his stance the next day, stressing that he saw “no evidence" of aliens as president. Host Miranda Devine asked Lara if Trump is preparing to make an announcement on aliens. "Do you think that he’s about to make an announcement about UFOs, because President Obama was just on a podcast talking about how he believes in UFOs and hinting that he saw something when he was president?” the host asked. “What’s kind of funny is we’ve kind of asked my father-in-law about this cause we’re like, ‘Well, what do you know?'” Lara said. She said that Trump “played a little coy” when she and Eric inquired about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. “Eric and I were like, ‘Oh my gosh, he won’t even fully tell us, maybe there’s more to it,’” she said. Lara then went on to admit that she had heard that her father-in-law even has a speech prepared. “I have just heard kind of around that he’s actually said, my father-in-law has actually said it, that there is some speech that he has, that I guess at the right time...I don’t know what the right time is...that he is going to break out and talk about, and it has to do with maybe some sort of extraterrestrial life, so to speak,” Lara added. Also Read: ‘Since it’s gotten attention...’: Obama clarifies on ‘aliens are real’ claim after video goes viral
Claims of alien bodies and spacecraft at secret facilities
There have been reports that Trump is gearing up to make an announcement on extraterrestrial life and objects that have been gathered over the years. The Vatican has formally declined an invitation to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed "Board of Peace," signalling unease over the structure and scope of the new initiative. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State and its top diplomat, confirmed Tuesday (Feb 10) that Pope Leo XIV would not participate in Trump's board touted by the POTUS as a shot at "GREATNESS FOR ALL.". The decision comes after the pontiff was invited last month to take part in the board, which was initially conceived to oversee reconstruction efforts in Gaza but has since expanded into a broader global peace body.
Vatican expresses concern over the UN's role
Speaking to reporters after an event marking the anniversary of the Lateran Pacts, Cardinal Parolin said the Vatican was left "perplexed" by certain elements of the proposal and said that "critical issues" still need to be resolved. He emphasised that crisis management at the international level should remain under the authority of the United Nations. One of the points on which they have insisted, Parolin said, "is that at the international level it should above all be the UN that manages these crisis situations. This is one of the points on which we have insisted".
Board of Peace under Trump's control
The board, chaired indefinitely by Trump, would reportedly allow the president to appoint members, shape the agenda, and oversee finances. That structure has drawn concern from several governments and diplomats who fear it could sideline existing international mechanisms.Britain, France and Norway have also declined invitations, while Italy and the European Union have indicated they may participate only as observers. Meanwhile, war criminal Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, sometimes referred to as 'Europe's last dictator', have been invited to join.
White House pushback
The White House described the Vatican’s decision as "deeply unfortunate," with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slamming the pontiff's refusal to join the Board of Peace, saying peace efforts should not become "partisan or political."Defending the board as a legitimate international body with broad participation. "This is a legitimate organization where there are tens of member countries from around the world, and we think that’s an unfortunate decision," she said. The board is expected to hold its first meeting in Washington this week.

According to a report in Axios, the Trump administration may be closer to launching a major military conflict in the Middle East than much of the American public realises, and such action could start soon. The report says that any US strike on Iran would likely extend far beyond a limited operation. Sources cited say it would resemble a sustained, weeks-long military campaign rather than a short, targeted strike like the one conducted in Venezuela last month. Per the report, officials expect any action to involve close coordination with Israel. Sources describe the potential campaign as broader and more threatening to Iran’s leadership than the 12-day conflict led by Israel last June, which the US later joined to strike Iran’s underground nuclear sites. The report emphasizes that a war of this scale would reverberate across the Middle East and shape the remainder of President Donald Trump’s time in office. Despite the stakes, it notes that there has been limited public discussion, with Congress and the public focused elsewhere. Also Read: Russia to play a part in US-Iran nuclear issue?
