"He (Trump) embraces political violence instead of rejecting it. We can’t let that happen," Biden told donors.

<h2>What did Trump say?</h2>

On Saturday, during a speech, Trump repeated a statement he made last week during a Fox News town hall. He said that he did not intend to become a dictator if he won the presidency again, except "on day one".

"I said I want to be a dictator for one day," he said during the New York Young Republican Club annual gala.

"And you know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall, right? I want a wall and I want to drill, drill, drill." At the Fox town hall, he had spoken nearly identical words.

As per White House spokesperson Andrew Bates, Biden "has been working to protect American democracy and to unite people of all political views against these unprecedented threats".&nbsp;

Without mentioning Trump by name, he added, "And I want to say it is wrong to suspend the Constitution and abuse federal power to persecute critics and trample the First Amendment."

At a White House reception to mark Hanukkah, Biden pledged that the US will "continue to provide military assistance to Israel until they get rid of Hamas."

However, as per The Times of Israel, the US President&nbsp;cautioned, "We have to be careful — they have to be careful. The whole world's public opinion can shift overnight. We can't let that happen."

"As I said after the (Oct 7) attack, my commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, and the security of Israel, its right to exist as an independent Jewish state, is unshakeable."

"Were there no Israel, there wouldn’t be a Jew in the world who is safe," he said, prompting a loud applause.

"The warmth and connection I feel to the Jewish community is unquestionable," he said, adding, "I ran into trouble and criticism when I said a few years ago that you don't have to be Jewish to be a Zionist, and I am a Zionist."

<h2>Trump's historic trial&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

Trump's trial is currently scheduled to begin in Washington on March 4, 2024, and the former president's lawyers have repeatedly sought to delay the trial until after the November 2024 election.&nbsp;

They have even claimed that Trump enjoys "absolute immunity" and cannot be prosecuted for actions he took while in the White House.&nbsp;

The immunity claim was rejected on December 1 by the US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is to preside over the first-ever criminal trial of a former president.&nbsp;

The 77-year-old, Republican frontrunner for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections, was expected to take the stand again this week.&nbsp;

Trump made the statement on his social media platform, Truth Social adding that he has “already testified to everything” in the ongoing trial in the case brought by New York state’s attorney general, one of the many legal woes that the former president is facing amid his White House bid.&nbsp;

New York Attorney General Letitia James had accused the former president of inflating his assets and net worth to obtain favourable bank loans and lower insurance premiums.&nbsp;

Trump was expected to take the stand on Monday (Dec 11) in a case involving his eldest sons Don Jr and Eric and other Trump Organization executives.&nbsp;

Trump lawyer Christopher Kise said there was “really nothing more to say to a judge who has imposed an unconstitutional gag order and thus far appears to have ignored President Trump’s testimony and that of everyone else involved in the complex financial transactions at issue in the case”.

New York Judge Arthur Engoron had first imposed a gag order on Trump in October after he shared a photo on social media of the judge’s principal law clerk posing with Senate Majority leader and Democrat Chuck Schumer, and falsely called her Schumer’s “girlfriend.”

Since the beginning of the trial, the Republican frontrunner has denounced the proceedings as a partisan “witch hunt”. During his first appearance, in November, Trump often avoided direct answers and spent much of his time complaining of unfair treatment.&nbsp;

At one point, a visibly angry Engoron told Trump’s lawyer, Kise, to “control your client”.&nbsp;

Engoron, whom Trump has branded “hostile” and a “political hack”, has already ruled that Trump and his sons manipulated financial statements to dupe banks and insurers, while the trial is currently focused on the damages.&nbsp;

Trump's lead expanded to six points, 37 per cent to 31 per cent, when five potential third-party and independent candidates were added to the mix, the poll showed. The poll surveyed 1,500 registered voters from Nov 29-Dec 4 by phone, landline, and text-to-web. Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio conducted the survey with Democrat Michael Bocian. The dissatisfaction with Joe Biden The WSJ poll showed that only 23 per cent of the voters said that Biden's policies helped them personally while 53 per cent said they were hurt by his agenda. Around 37 per cent approved of the president's job performance while 61 per cent saw his overall image in an unfavourable light, a record high. The findings of the poll were the latest shock to Biden and Democrats, some of whom fretted about the 81-year-old president’s stamina and have increasingly played up warnings of Trump’s potential return next year. “Things were thriving under Trump. This country is a business and it needs to be run by a businessman,” said Aimee Kozlowski of Goffstown, New Hampshire. Kozlowski said her competitive gymnastics facility was impacted as parents looked to cut costs because of inflation. 'Economy has gotten worse in past two years' The state of the American economy has been a core issue in the upcoming election. As per the poll, two-thirds of the voters rated the economy as poor or not good, and two-thirds said the economy had gotten worse in the past two years, during Biden's tenure as president. Meanwhile, 48 per cent of the voters said they did not believe this generation would do better than the one that came before, compared with 44 per cent who said conditions would be better for the current generation. "This is a witch hunt. This is election interference at a level that has never seen before, comes out of the DOJ (Department of Justice) in the White House in order to hurt a political opponent. And actually, it's driving up my polls because the people of our country get it," Trump said while talking to reporters.&nbsp;

"The poll numbers are the highest I've ever had, and the people of our country get it. It's a disgrace to America," he further added.

During his trial, Trump called the judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the trial,&nbsp;"crazy" and "unhinged," and denounced New York State Attorney General Letitia James as "corrupt" and "racist."

Leading up to the riot at Capitol Hill, Hostetter gave several inflammatory speeches in which he echoed Trump's claims and said that the election was fraudulent. He also called for the execution of Trump's political rivals.&nbsp;

On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol building, home to the US Congress. The riot attempted to try to disrupt the official certification of Joe Biden's victory over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.&nbsp;

The action was sparked by a fiery speech from Trump himself. However, the 2024 US presidential election&nbsp;hopeful has not directly been implicated in the event.

On that day, in 2021, Trump, who served as the president between 2017 and 2021, refused to concede that he lost the 2020 election to Biden, and spread false claims that the election was stolen from him.&nbsp;

The claims and conspiracy fuelled a deadly insurrection by Trump supporters at the US Capitol who even threatened to “hang” former Vice President Mike Pence to stop him from certifying Biden’s win.

The Democrat White House hopeful’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez was quick to respond and released a statement as soon as the event finished.&nbsp;

“Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he’s re-elected and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one. Americans should believe him.”

The incumbent president has repeatedly warned that his predecessor is a threat to democracy and if he wins a second term, it could lead to an unprecedented and dangerous age of American autocracy.&nbsp;

During a campaign event, Biden even cited Trump as one of the reasons he is running for office at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-joe-bidens-age-in-focus-yet-again-as-us-prez-celebrates-81st-birthday-ahead-of-2024-elections-660845">age of 81</a>. “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. But we cannot let him win.”

He also said the former president’s increasingly violent language on the campaign trail including the use of the word “vermin” <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-says-not-sure-if-hed-be-seeking-reelection-next-year-if-not-for-rival-trump-666650">echoed</a> the language used in Nazi Germany.

In an article written in The WaPo titled, “A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending,” conservative commentator Robert Kagan compared the former president to the power-grabbing Roman emperor Julius Caesar&nbsp;

He also warned that if he came to it, not even the US Constitution and Supreme Court could prevent Trump being “president for life” if he wanted.

Meanwhile, the NYT, in a recent analysis wrote that a second term could unleash a “darker President Trump” worse than what he was during his first term.&nbsp;

Santos recently wrote on Twitter that “the weaponized justice system is going after conservatives with political bias.”

Santos was&nbsp;a Republican representative for New York's 3rd congressional district. He was elected to Congress in 2022. His Congressional election campaign soon fell prey to an investigative report by the New York Times which revealed Santos misrepresented various aspects of his career.

<h2>Myriad controversies surrounding George Santos&nbsp;</h2>

Following the big revelation by NY Times, Santos acknowledged "embellishing" his resume, but new information about his background kept coming to light. Santos misrepresented his employment at Goldman Sachs to a Seattle judge in 2017 during a bail hearing for a "family friend," but he has since confessed he never had a direct employment relationship with the investment company.

He was also questioned by the US&nbsp;Secret Service in 2017 as part of an investigation into international credit card fraud. Although, his link to the case is still unknown and he was not named a suspect in the investigation.

Federal and state investigators are looking into his finances, including how his 2022 congressional campaign was funded, how long he worked for a company that allegedly ran a Ponzi scam, and how he allegedly helped a pet charity pretend to raise money for a dying veteran's dog. Santos has refuted any misconduct in all of these cases.

Concerns about Santos' campaign expenditures have also been filed with the Federal Election Commission.

A New York appeals court reimposed the gag order that effectively asked Trump to refrain from attacking court staff. This has exposed Trump to steep penalties that will be levied if he violates the order a third time.

<h2>Gag order: Imposed, lifted then imposed again</h2>

The gag order was imposed on Trump by Justice Arthur Engoron on October 3 following Trump's accusation of a top clerk of the court of being politically biased. Trump made the allegation on his Truth Social platform. Engoron said that after Trump's accusation, the court was 'inundated' with threats from supporters of Trump.

The order was temporarily paused by an appeals court judge on November 16.

From a business tycoon to the most powerful office in your country has been one kind of journey. You set out to redeem your country from malignant and malign influences: I can see that and you are absolutely right both in terms of the diagnosis and prescription of what ails your country. Your first term in office was tumultuous. You were and are the great disruptor, if I may borrow a term from business parlance. Or, you were an ‘insurgent’ par excellence. The challenges you set for yourself were humongous. One four-year term could never be enough for those.

Now, Mr Trump,&nbsp;&nbsp;allow me to stick my neck out. Come November 2024, you will, for sure, win the elections. The presidential suite and office will, once again, be yours. This would constitute a great opportunity for you and your country for a grand new bargain and reset. You will obviously have learnt from experience and will, I am sure, be well-prepared for new challenges that emerge every day. But, given that I like you, I would like to offer a few suggestions (unsolicited, of course). You can mull over and if these carry any merit consider these.

First, Mr Trump, I would like to say that you have no competition. Really. Your opponents, in the Democratic camp are bereft of both leadership and ideas. They even stole your ideas on the economy and policy. Their intellectual and moral decrepitude matches the leadership deficit of their party. Oh, sorry, Mr Trump, I used the wrong word. I had actually meant bankruptcy of leadership. This then constitutes a good start and even a good omen for you, sir. Forgive me, sir, for using the word ‘omen’: I am like you in this sense. I like tradition, the values that stem from this and blend it with the modern. I am also somewhat conservative.

As I stated I am no politician or policy analyst. But I may have some insights to offer you. Allow me to share these with respect to you and your country sir. I shall start with MAGA, my dear sir. It is not a mere acronym or slogan. It is what it denotes and should happen: America must be made great. Toward this end, Mr Trump, the first thing you must do is to redefine what being an American means (in other words Americanness). Sir, your country is a mosaic of colour(s). Let it be that way. But sir, craft and create a standard of values around American-ness that does not jar with the united colors of America. This is your first task. Then there is the economy my dear sir. Forgive me for the use of this academic jargon. I don’t like academics, especially those with airy pretensions too. But, some words have to be used. So, back to definitions, sir. You need to (and must) redefine the middle-class (es) in America and make these more expansive. You know it as well as I do: the ‘American Dream’ is not working at all. You don’t, sir, have to be the pied piper like them Dems sir but you can be you and make this dream real for those left at the mercy and vicissitudes of fate and unknown, obscure forces. It is then you will redeem yourself sir. For this, you don’t have to entirely close your country. But a partial closure, my dear Sir, is necessary (Look at your country’s deficits, sir! They are appallingly glaring).

Let the world pay and work toward its own security. Your country’s security umbrella subsidizes their indulgences and laziness, Sir. But Sir, if I may use a metaphor, of balance, you must be the holder of the overall balance Sir. By way of a digression, you are absolutely and totally right about world politics being grand transactions. I know that you see through the airy fairy talk by others of morality and values in interstate relations. You are not, forgive me the use of the word, a fool and none can fool you. But, Sir, even everyday transactions have some principles embedded in them. So, Sir, be transactional but underlay each transaction with some principle(s). This Sir, will give your country and your good self influence.

All this, my dear Sir, can happen only through you and the approach that you have chosen. Your country will be good for it and maybe even the world!

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday (Nov 24) said that his political rival was abandoning Ukraine under the influence of former United States president Donald Trump.

All 109 Conservative lawmakers in the House of Commons, in a preliminary poll on Tuesday (Nov 21), resisted the updated legislation for the free trade agreement between Canada and Ukraine, which received the unanimous backing of all the other parties.&nbsp;

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, elucidating the reason why his party did not back the agreement, stated that this would push Ukraine to adopt a carbon tax.&nbsp;

The trade bill includes language that the two countries will "promote" carbon pricing and mitigation, but does not have conditions that compel such a plan.

"To see the Conservative Party of Canada decide not to support Ukraine with something they need with the absurd excuse that it's because Ukraine is going to put a price on pollution is ridiculous," Trudeau told reporters in French at a news conference in Newfoundland.

After Russia, Canada has the second-largest Ukrainian expatriate community.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress released a statement expressing disappointment over Conservatives voting against the trade agreement.

Lawyers for Donald Trump were met with scepticism Monday (Nov 20) as they urged an appeals court to revoke a gag order in his election interference case -- although the judges appeared inclined to narrow the wording to safeguard his right to criticise his prosecution.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, overseeing the federal case against the former US president in Washington for an alleged criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, restricted statements that "target" prosecutors, court personnel and witnesses.

The order sought to put an end to incendiary remarks against individuals by Trump -- who has repeatedly called chief prosecutor Jack Smith "deranged" and his colleagues "thugs" -- and to stop the former president publicly attacking potential witnesses.

Chutkan did recognise Trump's right to criticise his successor Joe Biden, whom the Republican frontrunner will likely face as he bids for a return to the White House in next year's presidential election.

But Trump argues that the gag order, currently temporarily lifted during his appeal, runs up against First Amendment protections guaranteeing free speech.

His lawyers say the restrictions on him in the trial, set to start in March, will have an undue influence on his 2024 campaign.

"There's a balance that has to be undertaken here, and it's a very difficult balance in this context," one of the three judges on the appeals panel said, summarising the stakes of the Washington hearing, which lasted more than two hours.&nbsp;

"And we certainly want to make sure that the criminal trial process and its integrity and its truth-finding function are protected. But we've got to use a scalpel here and not step into really sort of skewing the political arena."

Trump's lawyer, John Sauer, argued that even the smallest restriction on his client's expression would be unconstitutional unless based on "extraordinarily compelling" evidence of damage to the integrity of the trial, and the risk of repeated harm.&nbsp;

"There is near complete overlap between the issues in the case and the issues in the political campaign," he said.
