US President Donald Trump has opened a new front in his tariff campaign, this time targeting wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada. In a post on Truth Social on Friday (Jul 17), Trump accused Canada of failing to manage its forests, saying smoke from the country's raging wildfires had polluted the air across parts of the United States. He warned that the economic cost of the smoke would be added to tariffs already imposed on Canadian goods."We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their forests, and brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!"
Wildfire smoke blankets parts of the US
Trump's remarks come as smoke from hundreds of active wildfires in Canada continues to spread across large parts of North America. According to NASA, nearly 850 active wildfires are burning across Canada, including more than 180 in Ontario. Smoke from the blazes has drifted into the United States, prompting air quality alerts across more than 20 states, from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast.Residents in several cities have been advised to limit outdoor activities as fine particulate matter from the smoke pushed air quality into unhealthy categories. Also read | Wildfire smoke from Canada will soon spread across US Midwest and EastNotably, the situation is not limited to Canada. More than 150 wildfires are also burning across the United States, including several in Michigan, according to Politico. Experts say a combination of prolonged dry conditions and a record-breaking heat wave across parts of North America has created ideal conditions for wildfires to spread.
Can tariffs be used to penalise wildfire smoke?
Trump did not explain how such a tariff would be implemented or under what legal authority the United States could levy additional duties over cross-border air pollution.Tariffs are traditionally imposed on imported goods rather than environmental impacts such as wildfire smoke.

President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian goods, accusing Ottawa of failing to manage its forests and allowing wildfire smoke to pollute air across the United States, though he did not explain the legal basis for such a move.

US President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of major American media networks after ABC and NBC declined to air his prime-time election security address live. Trump accused the broadcasters of political bias and claimed they were part of a conspiracy against him, even calling for possible revocation of their licenses. The networks defended their decisions, citing editorial judgment, while the controversy has reignited the long-running battle between Trump and mainstream US media.

President Donald Trump's longtime teleprompter operator, Gabriel Perez, is under investigation by federal regulators over alleged bets placed on prediction market platform Kalshi related to Trump's speeches. According to reports, Perez allegedly earned more than $90,000 in profits by predicting words and phrases Trump would mention during scheduled addresses. Kalshi flagged the trades as suspicious, froze most of the alleged profits, and referred the matter for review by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Perez, who has operated Trump's teleprompter since the 2016 presidential campaign, is now at the center of an investigation raising fresh concerns over insider information and prediction market trading

US President Donald Trump has claimed that newly declassified intelligence reveals major vulnerabilities in America's election system and alleged that China obtained 220 million US voter files beginning during the 2020 election cycle. Speaking from the White House, Trump said the data included sensitive voter information and argued that it exposed the country to foreign interference. He also announced that the declassified documents would be released publicly and renewed his call for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require voter identification, proof of citizenship and tighter rules on mail-in voting. While US media noted that the documents are newly declassified, they also reported that many of the security concerns referenced have been publicly discussed for years. Trump's broader allegations about the 2020 election remain disputed, and the proposed legislation continues to face significant political hurdles in Congress.

The Trump administration has announced a major overhaul of US legal immigration rules by ending the long-standing policy that allowed international students, exchange visitors and foreign journalists to remain in the country for the duration of their approved programs. Under the new regulations, international students and exchange visitors will receive visas valid for a maximum of four years, while foreign journalists will be limited to 240 days and Chinese journalists to just 90 days. Those wishing to stay longer must apply for extensions or leave the United States and seek new admission. The Department of Homeland Security says the changes are intended to strengthen oversight and prevent long-term visa misuse, while critics argue the policy could discourage global talent, affect American universities and complicate international media operations. The rule is expected to take effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, pending congressional review.

Donald Trump claimed that newly declassified intelligence reveals China compromised millions of U.S. voter records and exposed vulnerabilities in America's election infrastructure. The announcement comes as the U.S. launches a sixth consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military targets, while tensions continue to rise across West Asia. CENTCOM also intensified maritime operations near Iran as Ukraine reported deadly Russian missile strikes on Odesa. Meanwhile, North Korea pledged stronger ties with China, SpaceX aborted its latest Starship launch seconds before liftoff, and Japan's stock market plunged amid growing concerns over the AI sector.

Trump claims China hacked U.S. election data | U.S. strikes Iran again | Starship launch aborted

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (Jul 16) that television networks choosing not to broadcast his national address should have their broadcasting licenses revoked, after several major US networks opted against airing the speech on their main channels. The POTUS claimed that these channels were “part of a plot”."TV channels not covering the speech should have their licenses revoked," Trump said during his prime-time address, which focused on election security and claims of a stolen election just four months before the US midterm elections."They and others in the media are part of a plot. Fraud like this should mean a revocation of their licenses. They use our public multi-billion-dollar-in-value airwaves for absolutely no money. They pay nothing," he said, calling out ABC and NBC by name.
Why did channels skip the Trump speech?
The decision by several broadcasters comes against the backdrop of Trump's long-running criticism of US media and his repeated, unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Some Democrats, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, had urged networks not to broadcast the speech, arguing that Trump could repeat debunked allegations about election fraud. Also read | Trump in address to nation, repeats stolen election claims, alleges China compromised 220 million voter data filesThe speech also unfolded amid heightened tensions between the administration and major media companies. ABC's parent company, Disney, is facing FCC inquiries, while FCC Chair Brendan Carr has also launched investigations involving NBC and Comcast. President Donald Trump has called for television networks that declined to air his national address to have their broadcasting licenses revoked, escalating his long-running confrontation with major US media outlets.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (Jul 16) that television networks choosing not to broadcast his national address should have their broadcasting licenses revoked, after several major US networks opted against airing the speech on their main channels. The POTUS claimed that these channels were “part of a plot”. "TV channels not covering the speech should have their licenses revoked," Trump said during his prime-time address, which focused on election security and claims of a stolen election just four months before the US midterm elections. "They and others in the media are part of a plot. US President Donald Trump will attend Sunday's FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, with the White House confirming his presence at the tournament's showpiece event. The final will mark Trump's first appearance at this year's World Cup. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump's attendance would conclude what the administration described as a successful tournament hosted in the United States. "His attendance will cap what has been the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told a briefing on Thursday. “This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America's ability to host the world on the grandest stage.” Leavitt also confirmed that Trump will attend a reception hosted by FIFA at Trump Tower in New York on Friday before travelling to the final. Earlier in June, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had announced that Trump would attend the championship match in New Jersey and present the World Cup trophy to the winners. However, the White House had not officially confirmed those plans until now. When asked whether Trump would support Spain or Argentina, Leavitt said she did not know. Also Read: IND vs ENG, 2nd ODI: Joe Root's 99 not out helps England beat India by four wickets; series level at 1-1

The question comes after Trump criticised Spain during a NATO summit last week, accusing the European nation of failing to assist in military action involving Iran.
Trump's involvement in the World Cup
Although Trump has not attended any World Cup matches before the final, he has remained involved in tournament-related discussions. Earlier this month, Trump confirmed that he requested FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun during a match against Bosnia. Following the review, FIFA suspended Balogun's one-match ban before the United States faced Belgium. Despite the striker's availability, the hosts suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat. Trump has also repeatedly claimed credit for helping secure the United States' successful bid to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, a decision approved during his first presidential term.
Trophy presentation
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has maintained a close relationship with Trump in recent years. At the World Cup draw in Washington last year, Infantino presented Trump with FIFA's newly created Peace Prize. If Trump presents the World Cup trophy on Sunday, it will come after a widely discussed moment following last year's FIFA Club World Cup final. After Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey, Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but remained on the stage during the team's celebrations, creating an unusual trophy presentation. He later kept a replica of the Club World Cup trophy in his office.

US President Donald Trump has backed proposed legislation that could expose India to tariffs of up to 500 per cent over its continued purchases of Russian oil, according to a White House official.
