Indian-origin poet Rupi Kaur said she declined an invitation to Diwali celebrations at the White House on November 8, protesting US President Joe Biden administration's support of Israel's retaliatory action in Gaza following the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas terrorists.

Rupi Kaur, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), wrote that she "received an invite from the Biden administration for a Diwali event being held by the VP on Nov 8."

The elaborate post included a letter in which Kaur expressed surprise at the celebration of Diwali amid ongoing conflict in Gaza that has claimed thousands of lives so far.

"I’m surprised this administration finds it acceptable to celebrate Diwali, when their support of the current atrocities against Palestinians represent(s) the exact opposite of what this holiday means to many of us." She added: "I refuse any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population – 50 per cent of whom are children."

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists all across the world in the honour of Lord Ram's return to his birthplace Ayodhya 20 days after he defeated demon king Ravana who had abducted his wife Sita, the princess of Mithila. Thus came an end to Ram's 14 years of exile in response to a command by his father, the late king Dashrath as per the wishes of one of his wives Kakeyi.

Lord Ram, his brother Laxman, wife Sita and disciple Hanuman returned to Ayodhya on a no-moon night, following which the Ayodhya residents lit earthen lamps and decorated the city located in present-day North India. And thus came the origin of Diwali or Deepawali, literally meaning the festival of diyas (or light).

Kaur said she always used the holiday "to reflect on what it means to fight for freedom against oppression".

Poet Rupi Kaur declines invite to White House's Diwali celebrations amid Israel-Hamas war

As the festive season rolls on with Diwali around the corner, the diamond business in India is witnessing a major trend. While the traditional diamond polishing business in Surat is suffering amid the current geopolitical landscape and the Russia-Ukraine war, lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) are emerging as popular alternatives to natural diamonds.

The situation in Surat

As per media reports, the diamond business in Surat is seeing a notable decline, as the Ukraine War has disrupted the supply of rough diamonds.

An ANI report quoted Dinesh Navadia, the Regional Chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, as saying that prior to the war in Ukraine, approximately 1.75 lakh carats of raw materials used to enter Surat from Russia.

The current situation has, however, resulted in a scarcity of essential raw materials.

Navadia pointed out that a substantial portion, ranging from 30 to 35 per cent of rough diamonds imported from Russia' Alrosa, typically find their way to the Indian market for cutting and polishing, with Surat and Mumbai being key centres for these activities.

Diamond businesses in Surat have still not recovered, threatening the livelihoods of local artisans.

Trade associations such as the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) are still working to open up new markets in West Asia and the Far East.

Despite receiving interest from potential buyers in Hong Kong and Dubai, the demand for Indian products remained low due to the geopolitical situation.

With the initial scarcity of raw materials and the present slump in demand for natural diamonds, LGDs have begun to thrive in the Indian market.

The LGD landscape

According to an Economic Times report, industry experts anticipate that LGDs would sell more during this festive season, driven by increasing consumer acceptance. Manufacturers have introduced buyback programs, and the retail network is expanding, which is likely to lead to a significant year-on-year growth of up to 60 per cent during this period.

Notably, lab-grown diamonds are no longer limited to the 18-35 age groups, as even high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) have developed an interest in them. Previously, lab-grown diamonds were primarily favoured by the younger demographic, who found them more affordable than natural diamonds.

According to Lisa Mukhedkar, the founder and CEO of Aukera, LGDs have emerged as “the choice” for their cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. They have also become a sustainable option for environmentally conscious consumers, she said.

On a similar note, Abheek Mehta, the Co-founder of Amal Jewels, mentioned that lab-grown diamonds are identical in terms of their physical and chemical properties, including their designs. He also noted that the primary distinction lies in the pricing, with the price difference increasing as the size of the diamond becomes larger. According to him, lab-grown diamonds are typically 50-60 per cent more affordable.

The current trend

“The demand for natural diamonds is slowing down since lab grown diamonds are a cheaper substitute with the exact same qualities," Mehta said.

“Natural diamonds are not doing well even in international markets like the US and China,” he noted.

Commenting on the differences in price, Lisa Mukhedkar said, “Smaller stones come at 60 to 70 per cent of the cost of their mined counterparts, and for larger carats and fancy shapes, the savings can be as high as 80 per cent. This makes it a sound investment choice.”

Mehta said the one-carat LGD rings are being sold for about 50-60 thousand rupees, while natural diamonds would cost about 6-7 lakh rupees.

Previous reports suggest that the market for LGDs is thriving due to the current geopolitical situation and the limited supply of diamonds from Russia. However, Mukhedkar also attributed the LGDs’ increasing popularity to the expansion of the “solitaire market”, notably in the USA, which in turn has sparked a similar trend in India.

During the ongoing festive season, Mehta is optimistic about the sales for LGDs. “Considering that we’ve seen a lot of enquiries and sales during the festive season, we expect strong sales during this period until Diwali,” he said.

Mukhedkar said that the festive season is likely to witness increased sales of LGDs as they provide better value to customers. “Furthermore, customer awareness about the advantages of grown diamonds is leading to increased demand,” she added.

Speaking of the anticipated trends in the diamond market, Mehta of Amal Jewels said, “There may be a few rare natural diamonds that are bigger in size which will be priced appropriately to their value. However, LGDs are set to replace diamond jewellery that is worn on a daily basis.”

''We started making Diwali diyas last year, and we got a huge response. This year, we have already made around 20000 Diwali Diya's and we are still getting fresh orders. We are getting orders from Jammu and other parts and states of the country. We have sent them to Kulgam where we have a distributor who sends it across India. This year we had a great response from locals too,'' said Omar Kumar, the potter.

Diwali, celebrated by millions of Americans from various faiths and religions including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains, should be declared a federal holiday, Congresswoman Grace Meng has said.

Meng, a lawyer-turned-politician, who represents the sixth Congressional District of New York, has introduced the Diwali Day Act in the US House of Representatives, for making Diwali a federal holiday in the country.

“It’s not just about a day off. It is about making sure that people beyond those who celebrate Diwali, truly understand the holiday and the culture and the contributions of the so many people who celebrate Diwali,” Meng told PTI in an interview on Thursday.

As a kid growing up in Queens, New York City, Meng said she always wanted to make sure that US holidays match those of the communities.

“It is important to me as an Asian American that Diwali, which is a holiday that is celebrated by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and billions of people literally around the world, that we are able to have this day off,” the 47-year-old Democrat said.

The legislation introduced in May has gained positive traction from her Congressional colleagues.

“We haven’t really heard anything negative. So, in the world of politics and Congress, that is a very positive sign. This piece of legislation is a bipartisan piece of legislation,” she said.

“We have members signing on every week, and so we are excited to keep talking about it and hopefully be able to pass it. We are very heartened by the steps taken by New York State, for example, in making Diwali a New York City school holiday, which is long overdue. We’ve been fighting for about 10 years or over 10 years on that legislation. And so we think that that also provides some momentum for our federal legislation,” Meng said.

Indian Americans, she said, have contributed so much to New York City, New York State, and the US.

Indian Americans comprise one of the largest Asian American populations in this country, and they have provided so many benefits to the US.

“They have contributed so much to our culture to academia, to our economy. And so we want to make sure that we recognise the important contributions and holidays that Indian Americans celebrate,” the Congresswoman said.

Responding to a question on the recent visit of the Prime Minister and his address to the joint session of the Congress, Meng said the speech was well received.

“His presence was received by both sides of the aisle, very bipartisan. We know that there are Indian Americans in both Republican and Democratic districts throughout New York and across the country. Many of our constituents back at home in New York were excited to see him come to Congress and we were able to hear him speak about the strong alliance between India and the United States,” she said.

“It is a long-time relationship. As we hear about certain spots around the world, we know that it is very important for both countries and for democracy to continue to strengthen the alliance between the two countries,” the Congresswoman said.

“Both sides are finding more ways to collaborate and new areas of partnership,” she added.

Senator Addabbo congratulated Rajkumar and thanked Adams for his leadership and Diwali support. This year Diwali will be celebrated on November 12. 'A win for New York City' The Hindu American Foundation tweeted early Monday that the declaration of Diwali as a school holiday in New York City was a win for the city and a historic day. "We hope Senator Nikil Saval's Diwali bill in PA and other nationwide efforts will see similar success," the foundation added. Weeks before, the New York state legislature passed a bill last week to make Diwali a school holiday in the city before it was adjourned. Two earlier attempts to pass the bill in 2021 and 2022 had failed. Diwali has not been declared a national holiday in the US yet. In May, Congresswoman Grace Meng introduced a bill in Congress to declare Diwali a federal holiday. If passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, the Diwali Day Act would make the festival the 12th federally recognised holiday in the US, a report by the Times of India said. In April, Pennsylvania declared the Hindu festival an official holiday. The legislation to make Diwali an official holiday was introduced by Saval and Senator Greg Rothman. "The Senate voted unanimously to recognize Diwali as an official holiday! To all Pennsylvanians who celebrate this festival of light and connection: you are seen, you are welcome, you matter," Senator Saval tweeted on April 26. This one has all the flavours of festivities and one can confidentially say it will get those happy tears rolling down your cheeks. With this film, the late Indian superstar Sridevi made a comeback so it has been a special one for all Sridevi fans. But more than that, this film portrays the most ordinary aspects of life in an extraordinary manner. The film depicts the transformation of Shashi, a meek, put-upon indian housewife who speaks only Hindi, into a confident citizen of the world, over the length of a four-week crash course in English. It is a must-watch, doesn't matter if you are a Sridevi fan or not.

This Imtiaz Ali film can be watched over and over again and believe me it never gets old. 'Queen' to 'English Vinglish': 5 feel-good films to watch this Diwali

Ahead of week-long Diwali festival, huge crowds turned up at India’s southern Bengaluru city airport in a bid to make way for their homes on time.

A video went viral on social a couple of days ago showing the massive crowed gathered at the Kempegowda International Airport at 3 am.

"BLR airport at 3am. Diwali is here!" Vibin Baburajan, the co-founder of the All India Start-ups Community, wrote in his Twitter post, indicating the aviation industry’s robust growth in the post-pandemic India.

In the follow-up tweet, he claimed that “a decade ago around 50 million Indians were taking flights each year. Now 3x as many Indians are flying each year (CAGR of 12 per cent).”

Apart from him, there were several other users who took to the microblogging site sharing similar videos of people thronging to the airport.

As quoted by India-based news agency PTI, Harris said: "It is about culture. It is about an age-old concept that transcends cultures and communities. It is about a point of reflection and a moment of reflection to consider the duality of life in terms of the balance between darkness and light. And to celebrate the light. In that way, to think about what our role is and what our role should be in elevating us out of the darkness, guided by the light,"

She recollected her days of celebrating as a child with her grandparents in Chennai.

She said, "In the last few years, we have experienced a lot that has been about powerful forces trying to divide, trying to focus on what they would suggest are dissimilarities when we all know that the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us."

She added, "There are moments in our country right now where there are those who fight against democratic principles. The principles upon which our nation was founded. Principles like freedom, liberty,"

"And in these moments where we all have a keen awareness of the unfairness and the injustice of it all, let us be guided by our knowledge that it is not new, that there will be moments like this, but that we have the power to make a difference and to elevate any moment in a way that we feel and can see the future and the possibility and all that is bright that the world allows when we have the ability to believe in it," she said.

''We got big orders this year, we had around 800 pieces ordered last year and this year it's more than 15,000. And still, orders are pouring in. We can't make as much as the orders have come. We have dispatched over 15,000 Diwali lamps so far. We have sent it to Kulgam from where they are being sent across India. We don't differentiate between Hindus and Muslims, we all live together happily, and we also buy things from other communities. We made good money this Diwali,'' said potter Omar Kumar.

Diwali, not just a festival but an emotion for millions, will now be a public school holiday in New York City from 2023, the mayor announced on Thursday (October 21).

Eric Adams made the announcement along with New York Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, who proposed the legislation to recognise 'Diwali' at NYC schools, CNN reported.

The mayor further said that the decision was a "long overdue" acknowledgement for the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities.

Rajkumar said, "The time has come to recognise over 200,000 New Yorkers of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights."

This time, the legislators switched out 'Anniversary Day,' or 'Brooklyn-Queen Day' for the Hindu festival Diwali. Rajkumar said 'Anniversary Day' was "an obscure and antiquated day," as compared to Diwali.

The Anniversary Day dates back to 1829, and schools have been observing a day since the mid-1990s.
