Occasional lack of sleep leads to rise in dopamine levels, helps ward off depression: Study

A recent randomised controlled clinical trial has shown that hot&nbsp;yoga can significantly reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with moderate-to-severe depression. The findings of the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, suggest that hot&nbsp;yoga could offer a feasible therapeutic option for people suffering from depression.

The trial, led by investigators from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), part of Mass General Brigham (MGB), spanned eight weeks and included 80 participants who were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group engaged in 90-minute sessions of Bikram yoga, practised in a room heated to 105°F, while the second group was placed on a waitlist and received the yoga intervention after the waitlist period. The analysis included 33 participants in the yoga group and 32 in the waitlist group.

Participants in the yoga intervention group were prescribed at least two yoga classes per week but attended an average of 10.3 classes over eight weeks.

At the end of the eight weeks, participants in the yoga group showed a significantly greater reduction in depressive symptoms compared to those in the waitlist group, as measured by the clinician-rated Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS-CR) scale.

The study also revealed that 59.3 per cent of yoga participants experienced a 50 per cent or greater reduction in symptoms, while only 6.3 per cent of waitlist participants achieved this level of improvement. Furthermore, 44 per cent of the yoga group achieved IDS-CR scores indicating remission of depression, in contrast to 6.3 per cent of the waitlist group.

Notably, even participants who completed only half of the prescribed yoga sessions showed a reduction in depressive symptoms, indicating that heated yoga sessions once a week could still be beneficial.

A recent randomised controlled clinical trial has shown that hot yoga can significantly reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with moderate-to-severe depression. The findings of the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, suggest that hot yoga could offer a feasible therapeutic option for people suffering from depression. The trial, led by investigators from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), part of Mass General Brigham (MGB), spanned eight weeks and included 80 participants who were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group engaged in 90-minute sessions of Bikram yoga, practised in a room heated to 105°F, while the second group was placed on a waitlist and received the yoga intervention after the waitlist period. The analysis included 33 participants in the yoga group and 32 in the waitlist group. Participants in the yoga intervention group were prescribed at least two yoga classes per week but attended an average of 10.3 classes over eight weeks. At the end of the eight weeks, participants in the yoga group showed a significantly greater reduction in depressive symptoms compared to those in the waitlist group, as measured by the clinician-rated Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS-CR) scale. The study also revealed that 59.3 per cent of yoga participants experienced a 50 per cent or greater reduction in symptoms, while only 6.3 per cent of waitlist participants achieved this level of improvement. Furthermore, 44 per cent of the yoga group achieved IDS-CR scores indicating remission of depression, in contrast to 6.3 per cent of the waitlist group. Notably, even participants who completed only half of the prescribed yoga sessions showed a reduction in depressive symptoms, indicating that heated yoga sessions once a week could still be beneficial. Conducted by scholars from Tsinghua University and the Central University of Finance and Economics in China, this study delved into the lives of 5,281 college students in Beijing. Host Lee Cowan suggested, "Killing you?" to which Bündchen replied, "Exactly. You know, drinking mocha frappuccinos for breakfast with three cigarettes; drinking a bottle of wine at night to calm down from all the coffee I was drinking. Not sleeping and traveling and working. " 
 
"I basically burned out my adrenal glands and my nervous system couldn't take it anymore. I felt bad about it, I felt like I couldn't tell people that because they looked at me and they're like, She has everything. Like, they wouldn't even understand." 
 
Bündchen, 43, was discovered in a mall when she was 14, and soon became one of the most coveted faces on the ramp after moving from her hometown in Brazil to the US. 
 
Cowan asked, "How did the anxiety start to present itself?" 
 
"You know, I was in tunnels; I couldn't breathe," Bündchen said. "And then, I started being in studios, and I felt, like, suffocated. I lived on the 9th floor, and I had to go up the stairs because I was afraid I would be stuck on the elevator, and I'd be hyperventilating. Because you know, when you can't breathe even when the windows are open, you feel like, I don't want to live like this."

When she was asked if she really thought of jumping, Bundghen said, "Yeah. For, like, a second, because you're like, I can't." 
 
The model, however, said&nbsp;she took control and went into a complete detox. Gisele eliminated caffeine, sugar and alcohol from her routine and began meditating daily.&nbsp; 
 
"I wake up at five," she said. "Yeah, I like to wake up early, I like to greet the sun. You know, sometimes you're tired and you're like, 'Okay, I'm just going to sleep in a little bit,' but I feel a difference when I do that." 
 
She recalled she met her ex-husband Tom Brady soon after she adapted the new lifestyle. The pair knew each other for 16 years and was married for 13 before they announced their divorce.&nbsp; 
 
"I look into my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way," she said. "I wouldn't have any other life. I wouldn't have done it. If they say, can you change something in your life? I wouldn't change absolutely anything."

Tom and Gisele confirmed their divorce in October 2022 after 13 years of marriage.

Gisele added, "My parents have been married for 50 years, and I really wanted that to happen. Pete Davidson relies on horse tranquilliser to treat depression: Report

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday (August 4) approved the use of the Zurzuvae (zuranolone) pill to treat postpartum depression (PPD) in adults. In a statement, the FDA said that the pill is to be taken once every day for 14 days during the evening with a fatty meal. The daily recommended dosage is 40 milligrams. The approval of Zurzuvae was granted to Sage Therapeutics, Inc, the statement added.

UPSC, as the civil&nbsp;national exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, is popularly called,&nbsp;is one of India's toughest tests for positions in government civil service. Every year, close to a million aspirants appear for a series of nine tests that decide their fate of getting an opportunity to serve&nbsp;in Indian bureaucracy, eventually enabling them to hold positions both national and international. Of these, only a thousand make the cut. But what about the rest, who usually toil for years and exhaust most, if not all the six attempts available to pass the test?&nbsp;

More often than not, they initially repeat the process, trapped in a vicious cycle of hope and despair.&nbsp;

To find out what exactly those "left behind" go through, WION connected with some UPSC aspirants who are still caught between yearning and hopelessness, as well as a former candidate who has crossed the battlefield and is now an IAS, or Indian Administration Service, officer. We also talked to mental health experts and career counsellors who shed light on the struggle of these aspirants and suggested positive pathways to handle the dejection.&nbsp;

Here's what they said:

<h2>Stuck in one place...</h2>

A common narrative that many aspirants share is the feeling of being stationary while the world moves on. Chinmay Desai, a 27-year-old aspirant who has appeared for the civil services exams five out of the total six attempts, painted a dark picture.&nbsp;

"You feel stuck in one place...like you're standing in a crowd of people and everyone is rushing by, but you can't move."

Chinmay holds a master's degree in International Studies and has been preparing for the exam "on and off" since 2017. Six years down the line, he fears that, if he fails the last attempt, to enter the workforce he will have to spend at least 2-3 more years, doing a diploma or a course to match up to people his age.

Another UPSC hopeful, 25-year-old Aafreen, who along with the preparation has been working as a law associate, agrees: "After a certain number of attempts you do feel tired, you feel exhausted, and you definitely want to step out of the race."&nbsp;

"It was very exhausting, no other way to put it," she says, talking about how the exam has affected her mental health.

"Right after college, all my close friends, they started working at law firms...they started earning basically...they fit themselves into a certain profile and they kept moving forward. You always feel like okay you are left behind and then you counsel yourself by saying, okay, I have chosen a very difficult path, if it will take time, it will be fruitful, which is why you know, it's worth the wait."

"But it's really&nbsp;exhausting."

She goes on to talk about what the so-called 'UPSC preparation' can mean for a person's finances. Something as simple as a short trip with friends can contribute to mental and emotional distress.

She says that if you're on a trip with a couple of friends somewhere, "they would like to splurge" but "as an aspirant and as a person who doesn't ask money from their parents, I don't like doing that."

At times, "you have to be a miser and that at times makes you feel...sometimes...a little lesser than&nbsp;someone&nbsp;else."

"It is very exhausting to keep feeling like you don't have a direction when they (your friends) do," she adds.

Pranav Puri, a 26-year-old student of journalism and international studies, recalls how when he didn't qualify after giving his all in his first attempt, he felt burnt out.

"I wasn't really demoralised (initially), but when I checked the answer key," the next two days "I just could not get up from my bed."

<h2>Dealing with hopelessness</h2>

All three aspirants confessed to mental pressure and duress but revealed that they have not sought help from a professional. In the perilous journey of UPSC preparation, their families have been their support systems.&nbsp;

Aafreen confessed that at times when she found herself battling other stressful situations along with the examination, she did "consider talking to a professional," but "that didn't materialise for me".

Psychologist Jhanvi Jain, CEO and founder of WhyNott, a mental health wellness centre, says that while familial support is important and needed, "your parents are not going to be able to give you that objective, non-biased view."

"Through therapy, you see a very different perspective," says Jain.&nbsp;

She says that while you may feel lighter after talking to your parents or your friends, they will make you feel good, but "that emotion has not been processed, it's still in your body."

"Emotions, they get stored in your body, trauma gets stored in your body. Your past experiences are already in your body, so you'll not be able to recognise the triggers if they were to happen again and again."&nbsp;

This, as per the mental health counsellor, can be remedied through therapy.

<h2>How to deal with stress that comes with civil services preparation?</h2>

According to the counselling psychologist, how the exam affects an aspirant's mental health needs to be addressed at the exam prep institute level. She suggests that seeking mental health help while preparing for the exam should be made mandatory. "I personally would really love it."

Acknowledging that therapy can get expensive, Jain suggests that UPSC aspirants struggling with stress, anxiety and other issues can seek help from psychologists that offer therapy on a "sliding scale basis".&nbsp;

Describing the concept, the therapist shares that she and many of her colleagues try to help out people from different walks of life at a fee much lesser than their normal charges. She also suggested platforms like "Youth for Mental Health, Recover Media, and Talk to Therapist," for low-cost or&nbsp;free&nbsp;therapy.

Career counsellor Hanish Dogra says that failure in the UPSC exam is not the end of the world. He says that during their preparation, the aspirants gain a huge amount of knowledge, which they can utilise for other "reputed jobs" like state services etc. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst," he said.

<h2>'Victory speech:' You are your own person</h2>

A former aspirant and now IAS officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that she was unable to crack even the qualifying exam on her first attempt and that her second attempt — in which she failed to make the final list by just seven marks — brought her to her knees. However, she emerged victorious from her&nbsp;third and final attempt. She&nbsp;says that while it may "feel like you're not moving ahead" an aspirant must learn to "insulate themselves from comparisons" so as to "retain their mental health".

"You feel stuck in one place...like you're standing in a crowd of people and everyone is rushing by, but you can't move." Chinmay holds a master's degree in International Studies and has been preparing for the exam "on and off" since 2017. Six years down the line, he fears that, if he fails the last attempt, to enter the workforce he will have to spend at least 2-3 more years, doing a diploma or a course to match up to people his age. Another UPSC hopeful, 25-year-old Aafreen, who along with the preparation has been working as a law associate, agrees: "After a certain number of attempts you do feel tired, you feel exhausted, and you definitely want to step out of the race." "It was very exhausting, no other way to put it," she says, talking about how the exam has affected her mental health. "Right after college, all my close friends, they started working at law firms...they started earning basically...they fit themselves into a certain profile and they kept moving forward. You always feel like okay you are left behind and then you counsel yourself by saying, okay, I have chosen a very difficult path, if it will take time, it will be fruitful, which is why you know, it's worth the wait." "But it's really exhausting." She goes on to talk about what the so-called 'UPSC preparation' can mean for a person's finances. Something as simple as a short trip with friends can contribute to mental and emotional distress. She says that if you're on a trip with a couple of friends somewhere, "they would like to splurge" but "as an aspirant and as a person who doesn't ask money from their parents, I don't like doing that." At times, "you have to be a miser and that at times makes you feel...sometimes...a little lesser than someone else." "It is very exhausting to keep feeling like you don't have a direction when they (your friends) do," she adds. Pranav Puri, a 26-year-old student of journalism and international studies, recalls how when he didn't qualify after giving his all in his first attempt, he felt burnt out. "I wasn't really demoralised (initially), but when I checked the answer key," the next two days "I just could not get up from my bed." Dealing with hopelessness All three aspirants confessed to mental pressure and duress but revealed that they have not sought help from a professional. In the perilous journey of UPSC preparation, their families have been their support systems. Aafreen confessed that at times when she found herself battling other stressful situations along with the examination, she did "consider talking to a professional," but "that didn't materialise for me". Psychologist Jhanvi Jain, CEO and founder of WhyNott, a mental health wellness centre, says that while familial support is important and needed, "your parents are not going to be able to give you that objective, non-biased view." "Through therapy, you see a very different perspective," says Jain. She says that while you may feel lighter after talking to your parents or your friends, they will make you feel good, but "that emotion has not been processed, it's still in your body." "Emotions, they get stored in your body, trauma gets stored in your body. Your past experiences are already in your body, so you'll not be able to recognise the triggers if they were to happen again and again." This, as per the mental health counsellor, can be remedied through therapy. How to deal with stress that comes with civil services preparation? According to the counselling psychologist, how the exam affects an aspirant's mental health needs to be addressed at the exam prep institute level. She suggests that seeking mental health help while preparing for the exam should be made mandatory. "I personally would really love it." Acknowledging that therapy can get expensive, Jain suggests that UPSC aspirants struggling with stress, anxiety and other issues can seek help from psychologists that offer therapy on a "sliding scale basis". Describing the concept, the therapist shares that she and many of her colleagues try to help out people from different walks of life at a fee much lesser than their normal charges. She also suggested platforms like "Youth for Mental Health, Recover Media, and Talk to Therapist," for low-cost or free therapy. Career counsellor Hanish Dogra says that failure in the UPSC exam is not the end of the world. He says that during their preparation, the aspirants gain a huge amount of knowledge, which they can utilise for other "reputed jobs" like state services etc. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst," he said. 'Victory speech:' You are your own person A former aspirant and now IAS officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that she was unable to crack even the qualifying exam on her first attempt and that her second attempt — in which she failed to make the final list by just seven marks — brought her to her knees. However, she emerged victorious from her third and final attempt. She says that while it may "feel like you're not moving ahead" an aspirant must learn to "insulate themselves from comparisons" so as to "retain their mental health". The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that a low-pressure area is forming over the southeast Arabian Sea which can intensify in the next 24 hours and can critically influence monsoon's advancement towards the Kerala coast. The IMD has stated that the depression can intensify into a cyclonic storm which has been named Cyclone Biparjoy in Bangladesh. No tentative date for the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala was given by the weather department. Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather has stated that the monsoon may arrive in Kerala on June 8 or June 9. However, it is expected to be a "meek and mild entry". "These powerful weather systems in the Arabian Sea spoil the advancement of the monsoon deep inland. Under their influence, the monsoon stream may reach coastal parts but will struggle to penetrate beyond the Western Ghats," the agency further stated. The weather department stated that a depression was formed in the Arabian Sea on June 5 which can intensify into a cyclone. 3. In a bulletin released on Tuesday morning, the IMD stated that the depression is currently located around 1,120 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 920 km west-southwest of Goa, 1,160 km south of Porbandar, and 1,520 km south of Karachi, Pakistan, at 5:30 am on Tuesday. 4. The IMD stated that the depression may move northwestward and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm. 5. The IMD, in its bulletin, has stated that the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify into a severe one on Thursday morning and may turn into a very severe cyclonic storm by Friday evening. The Met department has predicted that the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify and move east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea. "It is likely to move nearly northwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours over east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea," the department was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. 7. The IMD had earlier stated that a low-pressure system's formation over the southeast Arabian Sea and its intensification is likely to critically influence the monsoon's advancement towards the Kerala coast. 8. The IMD has stated that the path of the cyclone is being closely monitored by them and they will issue advisories, accordingly. When he was asked if people in rural India weren't aware of conversations around mental health, the actor said, “It doesn’t exist. Nobody knows about it, nobody has depression in villages. It’s a fact, go check." 
 
“You see, in cities, people have the habit of glorifying even the smallest problems. Why don’t they see how people with real problems live their lives? Look how they dance on footpaths in the rain, why don’t those people have depression?” the actor added. 
 
Gulshan calls out Nawazuddin&nbsp; 
 
The actor's comments on mental health did not go down well with Gulshan Devaiah who took to Twitter and slammed Siddiqui. “Dritharashtra &amp; Gandhari syndrome. I immensely respect the man for his craft but I’d not take him seriously on this issue. If you even just look at alcoholism or addictions, they exist in rural communities and that’s mental illness. No addict indulges in addiction because they love it. The addiction is a symptom, the real problem is the trauma they can’t heal," he wrote. 
 
Gulshan Devaiah further clarified that even though he does not have a rural upbringing, he has “close family members who grew up in villages and have very problematic behaviour because they didn’t process their trauma properly and they pass it on to others."

As for depression, the researchers found 7 per cent higher risk of depression than in people who did not eat fried foods.

The findings of the research were published in the journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America).

The link was more pronounced among young men and younger consumers of fried food products.

<h2>Fried foods linked with depression: What does it mean?</h2>

The results "open an avenue in the significance of reducing fried food consumption for mental health," according to the research.&nbsp;

But there remains a crucial caveat in the findings.&nbsp;

Experts cited in the media say that since the results of the research are preliminary, it is yet to be made clear whether fried foods drive mental health issues or people with mental health issues turn to fried food items. That is, the Catch-22 situation can be understood as: Are you driven to fried food items because you are anxious or depressed, or do the fried food items drive anxiety or depression in the first place?

This is because people with underlying symptoms of anxiety and depression often turn to comfort foods.

The study evaluated 140,728 people over a period of more than 11.3 years.&nbsp;

After excluding participants diagnosed with depression within the first two years, a total of 8,294 cases of anxiety and 12,735 cases of depression were found in those that consumed fried food.

The study had also found that the participants consuming more than one serving of fried food regularly were more likely to be youngsters, specifically the young men.

To avoid this and ensure that medications work effectively, an Israeli health-tech company is using Artificial Intelligence to match antidepressants to patients.

According to World Health Organization, globally, more than 280 million people suffer from depression. However, as per estimates for two-thirds of them, the initial prescriptions for depression or anxiety may not work properly.

The groundbreaking AI-based technology uses brain cells generated from patients' blood samples which are then tested for biomarkers when exposed to various antidepressants.&nbsp;

Genetika+, the company then analyses the patient's medical history and genetic data to determine the best drug and correct dosage for a doctor to prescribe.

As per a BBC report, the AI-based technology is still in development and is set to be launched commercially in 2024.

Dr Heba Sailem, senior lecturer of biomedical AI and data science at King's College London says that the potential for AI to transform the global pharmaceutical industry is huge.

Got social anxiety? Well, according to some Swedish researchers, smelling other people's body odour could be an effective anxiety therapy for you. Scientists have been using armpit sweat in their experiments and they have reportedly found that social anxiety can be reduced with the help of human "chemo-signals". The study was done by researchers from Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

The study says that exposure to human stink reduces social anxiety by nearly 40 per cent when clubbed with mindfulness therapy.&nbsp;According to a BBC report, they are presenting some of their early findings at a medical conference in Paris this week.

The researchers believe that smell activates brain pathways linked to emotions, which eventually offers&nbsp;a calming effect. But the study is in its initial stage and it is far too soon to say if they are right or wrong.

For the study, the researchers asked volunteers to donate their&nbsp;armpit sweat while watching either a scary or a happy movie. Then they looked for&nbsp;48 women who had social anxiety and asked them to sniff some of these samples, alongside receiving a more conventional therapy called mindfulness, which encourages people to focus on the present moment than replaying negative thoughts.

Some of the women were given genuine body odour to sniff, while others were given clean air instead. Scientists say that those who were exposed to sweat appeared to do better with mindfulness therapy.

Lead researcher of the study, Elisa Vigna, says, "Sweat produced while someone was happy had the same effect as someone who had been scared by a movie clip. So there may be something about human chemo-signals in sweat generally which affects the response to treatment."

Vigna added, "It may be that simply being exposed to the presence of someone else has this effect, but we need to confirm this. In fact, that is what we are testing now in a follow-up study with a similar design, but where we are also including sweat from individuals watching emotionally neutral documentaries."

Aromas, detected by receptors in the upper part of the nose,&nbsp;are relayed directly to the limbic system, a brain region that is associated with memory and emotions. And while most of the skin's sweat is odourless, sweat glands in the armpit and groin produce certain compounds that cause body odour.

Duncan Boak from the charity Fifth Sense says, "We know there's a strong link between our sense of smell and our emotional well-being. Losing the ability to smell other people, such as your partner and children can cause depression and feelings of isolation."

Boak&nbsp;added, "Whilst this is a preliminary study and further work is of course needed, it's very encouraging to see further research around the importance of our sense of smell to good mental health."

Smelling stinky armpits may reduce social anxiety: Study

According to a study published in the online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, those who have depression symptoms might be at an elevated risk of suffering a stroke. Researchers also discovered that persons who had depression symptoms were more likely to have a poor recovery after a stroke.

“Depression affects people around the world and can have a wide range of impacts across a person’s life,” said study author Robert P. Murphy, MBBS, of the University of Galway in Ireland. “Our study provides a broad picture of depression and its link to the risk of stroke by looking at a number of factors including participants’ symptoms, life choices and antidepressant use. Our results show depressive symptoms were linked to increased stroke risk and the risk was similar across different age groups and around the world.”

The study involved 26,877 adults from the INTERSTROKE study and included people from 32 countries across Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Middle East and Africa. Participants had an average age of 62.

Of the study participants, 18% of those who had a stroke had symptoms of depression compared to 14% of those who did not have a stroke.

After adjusting for age, sex, education, physical activity and other lifestyle factors, people with symptoms of depression before stroke had a 46 per cent increased risk of stroke compared to those with no symptoms of depression.

The more symptoms participants had, the higher their risk of stroke. Participants who reported five or more symptoms of depression had a 54 per cent higher risk of stroke than those with no symptoms, while those who reported three to four symptoms of depression and those who reported one or two signs of depression had 58 per cent and 35 per cent higher risk, respectively.

While people with symptoms of depression were not more likely to have more severe strokes, they were more likely to have worse outcomes one month after the stroke than those without symptoms of depression.

“In this study, we gained deeper insights into how depressive symptoms can contribute to stroke,” Murphy added. “Our results show that symptoms of depression can have an impact on mental health, but also increase the risk of stroke. Physicians should be looking for these symptoms of depression and can use this information to help guide health initiatives focused on stroke prevention.”

A limitation of the study was that participants filled out questionnaires about symptoms of depression only at the start of the study, so the effects of depression over time could not be measured.
