Cyclone Nisarga which spared Mumbai after it made landfall near adjoining Alibaug is now a depression over west Vidarbha region in Maharashtra and will weaken further, the India Meteorological Department(IMD) said on Thursday.

Cyclone Nisarga made landfall near Alibaug, about 110 km from here on Wednesday, sparing India's financial centre which is already reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Deep Depression weakened into a Depression over west Vidarbha (Maharashtra) at 0530 IST of 4th June, to move east- northeastwards and weaken into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area (WML) by today evening," the department tweeted.

The cyclone had the coastal districts of Maharashtra from the Arabian Sea with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour (kmph) on Wednesday afternoon.

Mumbai was on edge as it braced for the cyclone after a gap of 72 years.

The neighbouring coastal districts of Raigad and Palghar bore the brunt of the storm experiencing strong winds, heavy rainfall and raging sea surge.

Tidal waves measuring up to 6-8 feet lashed parts of the coastal areas.

Tin roofs erected on the terraces of residential apartments flew away in some places and several trees and electricity poles were also uprooted.

A 58-year-old man died after a power transformer fell on him while he was rushing home to escape the cyclone fury in Raigad district, while s 65-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man died in house collapse after the tin sheets on the roof were blown in separate incidents in Pune district, officials said.

Mumbaikars heaved a sigh of relief as the cyclone's damage appeared limited to uprooting of trees in some areas that led to vehicles being crushed.

Moreover, fund allocations also have to be increased. Funds allocated to the National Mental Health Programme were not increased in the Union Budget for FY 2020. It was brought down to Rs 40 crore from Rs 50 crore in FY2018.&nbsp;

Also, more trained psychiatrists and psychologists should be made available at government health care centres to meet WHO prescribed norms so that people can avail mental health treatment at a cheaper cost.

India-US agreement on mental health is highly praiseworthy

"He's pretty fragile in terms of his mobility... and that makes him suffer a kind of depression," Edinho said of his 79-year-old father, who has had a series of health problems in recent years.

"Just imagine, he's the 'King,' he was always such an imposing figure, and now he can't walk normally. He gets very shy, very embarrassed about that," his son said in an interview published on the sports news site Globoesporte.com.

Pele, the pride of Brazilian football and the only player to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time.

He has been in and out of the hospital in recent years for various health issues.

He never fully recovered from one of his hip operations, leaving him dependent on a walker, Edinho said.

"He's doing a bit better than when he was in a wheelchair recently, but he still has a hard time getting around," said Edinho, 49.

Pele's public appearances have grown increasingly rare with age.

Last April he travelled to Paris for a promotional appearance with French rising star Kylian Mbappe but had to be hospitalized shortly after for kidney problems.

Indian actress Deepika Padukone, who has been an advocate of mental health awareness and has been extensively working towards de-stigmatising mental illness, was rewarded for her work at World Economic Forum's Crystal Award ceremony, held in Davos on January 20. About one in seven persons in India suffered from mental disorders of varying severity in 2017, with depression and anxiety disorders being the most common mental disorders affecting 45.7 million and 44.9 million people each in the country, noted the findings of a first comprehensive study done by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on disease burden due to mental disorders in India.

The research has shown that there is a significant increase in the incidence of mental health disorders in India over the years.

The ICMR findings have clearly noted that approximate 197 million persons, roughly one in seven Indians, suffered from any kind of mental disorders of the year 2017.

These include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, idiopathic developmental intellectual disability, conduct disorders, and autism. "We found that depression is highest in older adults which has significant implications for the ageing population of India. Depression contributed 33.8 per cent of all mental disorder, followed by anxiety disorders (19.0 per cent), idiopathic developmental intellectual disability (10.8 per cent), and schizophrenia (9.8 per cent)," Prof Balram Bhargav, Director General, ICMR informed ANI.

As depression is associated with suicide deaths in India it is our big concern to tackle it and with this association, we found out that it is slightly stronger in females than in males, (Prof) Bhargava added.

The study is now published in the latest issue of The Lancet Psychiatry journal under the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative of ICMR and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI).

"The prevalence of mental disorders has doubled between 1990 and 2017. To understand the burden of mental health, we have studied all available data sources from India to bring in this state-specific scientific paper on mental health problems in India," Prof Lalit Dandona, Director of the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative told ANI.

Among the mental disorders that during childhood and adolescence, the prevalence for idiopathic developmental intellectual disability was 4.5 per cent, conduct disorder 0.80 per cent, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder 0.42 per cent, and autism spectrum disorders 0.35 per cent, findings noted.

Dr Rajesh Sagar, lead author of the story and Professor of psychiatric at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said,&nbsp;"Mental illnesses is rising in India at a tremendous rate. It is the need of the hour to upgrade mental health services, create awareness, remove social stigma and generate access to treatment."

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Balachandran, Director, South Zone Head of IMD said, “Over the last 24 hours 33 places across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry received heavy rain whereas four places received very heavy rainfall. For the next 24 hours, there would be heavy rainfall across the Southern coastal districts and districts adjoining the western ghats. Other regions of the state and Puducherry would receive moderate rainfall.”

Fishermen have also been instructed to not venture towards Maldives, Lakshadweep, Kerala for the next 24 hours.&nbsp;

Tamil Nadu’s Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar said, “we have three IAS officers deputed to monitor the situation across 32 districts and 12 boats from Kanyakumari, Tuticorin that are fishing in the high seas have been asked to return. People living in low-lying areas have been instructed to move to higher ground and SDRF teams are on standby as a precaution against landslides. Adequate measures are being taken to provide pumps for places where waterlogging is likely.”

While Cyclone 'Maha' has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm in the Arabian sea, there is a possibility of a depression forming in the Bay of Bengal by early next week. “Between November 4th and 5th a low pressure is likely to form in the West Andaman coast and is likely to move northwestwards and form as a depression”, Balachandran added.

It is found that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in India, World Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated that more than 300 million people suffer from depression across the world. The report also emphasised the need for more investment in mental health care. Social isolation, due to a change in lifestyle or other unforeseen circumstances, can severely impact mental well-being. A strong need, therefore, exists to motivate and counsel affected people to have meaningful social relationships. The National Mental Health Survey, 2016, conducted across 12 Indian states, has stated that 150 million persons are in need of mental health interventions and care. Also, it is a matter of concern that India lacks a sufficient number of mental health professionals. More trained psychiatrists and psychologists are required at government health care centres across the country to meet WHO prescribed norms. Government, people and organisations are finally discussing ways to deal with mental illness. In India, people are now willing to reach out, both to be heard and to lend an ear. Lending moral support to the general public, even celebrities are coming out with their experiences in order to create awareness about mental health. Internet, mobile apps should be used to create awareness and provide help to people who want to be anonymous while reaching out for assistance and information. She further explained that she "was going through a difficult situation that left me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually bankrupt and it had taken its toll physically. The feeling of despair is a relatable one, so I feel a responsibility to anyone else going through something difficult to say that it`s ok to not be ok."

The 31-year-old actor, who came out as a homosexual in 2014, told The Observer that it would have been 'very harmful' for her if somebody had revealed her sexuality before her.

"I have a responsibility to be out now, because I have these resources. I can access therapists and security and support. But the reality is a lot of people can be in severely grave danger. I think, for instance, it would have been very harmful for me if someone had outed me earlier. "

In a lengthy Facebook post Page accused Ratner of making the slur about her to other actors during the first day of filming the movie, in which she was starring as Kitty Pryde.

Recalling the incident, Page said, "Something had switched. I wanted to talk about the sh**tiness I'd seen. I've dealt with these difficult things, whether it's directors trying to sleep with me when I was 16, or stalkers. But there are people in society who deal with far, far worse and cannot access the resources I have."

As discussions about mental health are becoming far less taboo day by day, relatable feelings are going viral with an increasing number of such content creators expressing themselves with pictures, videos using hashtags and triggering a conversation about mental illness.

The recent boost in such category of social media content is provoking a dialogue on mental health by perpetuating a common thought, that, yes there are many people who are going through the same circumstances as you are.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, actress Deepika Padukone shared a video on social media using the hashtag - #NotAshamed and urged fans to open up about depression. &nbsp;

Dr. Jaya Maheshwari, a psychiatrist who works in a clinic in South Delhi says, “Social media content based on the theme of depression are becoming popular with people and is raising awareness about what it’s like to live with a constant feeling of sadness and hopelessness”. &nbsp;

She also observes that with the growing awareness among people, it is also making them more comfortable to talk about the illness.

“With the growing awareness, some are even more comfortable talking about their depression. Though by no means, such content is a solution for mental illness, however, it is definitely an effective coping strategy for pain. 
Someone might see a picture or a video describing a complicated feeling they struggle in expressing it and realise that they are not the only one because at the end of the day that’s what many of us expects from our close ones; letting ourselves out without being judged,” she said.

I strongly feel, when choosing between suppression and expression, the latter is always a better option.

Blog: Social media helps people open up about depression

The number of people diagnosed with a mental health condition is increasing, globally. Diagnostic labels can act as passports to accessing public services and help create communities of individuals with the same label. But are these reasons enough to justify their continued use? Getting a diagnostic label is no guarantee of getting the right treatment and it is often associated with worry and stigma.

Some say that they’re necessary for research. Scientists hope that diagnostic labels for mental health conditions will neatly correspond with specific physiological markers. But a definitive blood test or MRI-based brain marker for conditions such as autism and depression continues to elude scientists.

Also, mental health conditions have highly variable symptoms. They are not clear cut like other medical conditions, such as bone fractures or tooth decay. And a broken bone today is the same as a broken bone in ancient Greece. However, diagnostic criteria for mental health conditions keep shifting, even over relatively short periods of time.

A recent report showed that over a fifth of people diagnosed of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using diagnostic criteria from 2004, would not receive the same diagnosis based on the latest criteria, published in 2013. To add to the confusion, many people can have more than one diagnostic label – a phenomenon known as “comorbidity”.

The inherent lack of precision in defining the diagnostic label, the changing criteria with time and the rarity of pure examples of a specific mental health condition vastly reduce the usefulness of diagnostic labels in guiding research. Indeed, the National Institute of Health in the US recognised this problem some years ago and called for a new approach to researching mental health conditions. This approach, called the research domain criteria (RDoC), focuses on studying traits across the general population and their underlying biology, rather than on specific diagnostic labels.

From a treatment point of view, knowing the diagnostic label alone is hardly ever enough information to decide the best course of action. For example, a person with a diagnosis of ASD might have significant sensory issues, while another might struggle more with language. These two people will benefit from very different interventions. It’s not an overstatement to say there is no one-size-fits-all intervention for any mental health diagnostic label. So the usefulness of a diagnostic label for choosing the right treatment is limited.

 
The approach of focusing on the person rather than the label is known as precision psychiatry. This customised approach seeks to target the specific symptoms experienced by the individual in light of his or her genetic, social and cultural background. Hippocrates echoed a similar sentiment over two millennia ago when he stated, " It’s far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has.

Public health

A significant part of my work is in developing countries where there is a shortage of specialists who can provide a diagnosis. For most mental health conditions, early intervention is critical – it is associated with the best outcomes. Delays in getting a diagnostic label lead to delays in getting treatment in these countries and so can result in a reduced chance to benefit from the intervention.

If getting support for mental health issues did not have to rely heavily on the diagnostic label, then access to treatment could be accelerated by involving non-specialists from the community and families. Health workers with little or no clinical training, such as those involved in vaccination drives, could be trained to identify people at risk of having or developing mental health conditions, as is being done in our current project in India.

Families of people identified of being at risk of a mental health condition can then be trained to apply simple behavioural interventions that have been shown to be effective. This approach of identifying at-risk people early and using simple non-specialist behavioural interventions is associated with significantly better mental health outcomes in children and adolescents. Crucially, this approach does not rely on getting a formal diagnostic label.

At a time when rates of diagnosis for mental health conditions keep spiralling upward, it is worth imagining a world without diagnostic labels: one where an individual is assessed on his or her functional needs and receives care based on the specific needs rather than a somewhat arbitrary label. A world without stigma due to these labels. And a world where scientists focus their search on understanding the biology of behaviour across the entire population, rather than create arbitrary groups of people defined by their labels as “cases” and “controls”.

One of the first few celebrities in India to have openly talked about mental health, Deepika Padukone has always tried to spread awareness about depression. The actress, who had admitted to have suffered from depression a few years back, even started a foundation The Live Love Laugh Foundation to spread more awareness about mental health.&nbsp; 
 
Following the death of designer Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, Deepika has shared a note of her organisation on Instagram reiterating the importance of reach out.&nbsp; 
 
Both Spade and Bourdain committed suicide and reportedly were suffering from depression.&nbsp; 
 
“Every 40 seconds a person dies by suicide,” the note begins, quoting WHO statistics. “Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain were pioneers in their fields... and to the outside world they ‘had it all’ and were seemingly ‘happy’”.

But despite 'having it all', the did suffer from depression, Deepika pointed out. " The element of depression that is grossly misunderstood is that you have control over your illness,” the post continues. “Asking someone to ‘snap out of it’ is like telling a person with a broken foot to continue walking.”

The husband of fashion designer Kate Spade on Wednesday broke his silence on her death, saying she suffered from depression for years and that the couple had been living separately for 10 months.

Andy Spade said in a lengthy statement&nbsp;that he and his teenaged daughter Bea were "devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her."

Kate Spade, who with her husband built a fashion empire on the popularity of her colorful handbags, was found dead in her New York City apartment on Tuesday, an apparent suicide. She was 55.&nbsp;

Andy Spade said that his wife suffered from depression and anxiety for many years but there was "no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock."

"She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety. There was no substance or alcohol abuse. There were no business problems," he said in his statement.

Spade said he also wanted to clear up rumors and speculation that have surfaced about the couple`s personal life.&nbsp;

"For the past 10 months we had been living separately, but within a few blocks of each other. Bea was living with both of us and we saw each other or spoke every day.&nbsp;

"We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce. We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how. We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break," he said in his statement.

There were media reports that Kate Spade left a suicide note.

"I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media," Andy Spade said.

Kate and Andy Spade sold their last stake in the Kate Spade accessories brand in 2006 to focus on raising their daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade.

Dangal actress Zaira Wasim opened up about suffering from depression in a note on Facebook. Taking to social media on Friday, Zaira wrote about how she was told she was "too young to be depressed" and that depression is "just a phase."&nbsp;

In her note, she admits that it took a lot of courage to come to terms with her depression and talking about it in public. She revealed being diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression four-and-a-half years ago "without being ashamed, embarrassed and having the fear of being judged for it." Her depression was intense and she constantly juggled between suicidal thoughts, starving, a daily dosage of medicines and restlessness that were the highlight of her days. She wrote, "Perhaps it could've been *JUST A PHASE* but this awful phase has put me in situations I never wished or chose to be in.”

She wrote: "Popping 5 antidepressants every day, anxiety attacks, being rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night, feeling empty, restless, anxious, hallucinations, having sore limbs from sleeping too much to not being able to sleep for weeks, from overeating to starving myself, unexplained fatigue, body ache, self-loathing, nervous breakdowns, suicidal thoughts were all parts of this PHASE.”

What made her struggle worse was that she was made to believe that "there's no such thing as depression" and that it can only be diagnosed in those above the age of 25. "I was always pushed into the bubble of denial, despite knowing the reality and I would always lie to myself and others and just shake my head in yes when they would say - It's nothing, you're too young to be depressed, I would just lie to myself and call the doctors crazy," she wrote.

Towards the ending of the note, Zaira who gave a star performance in both Aamir Khan films, Dangal and Secret Superstar said that she is now taking a break from social media. She added, "I just need a complete break from everything, my social life, my work, school and especially social media. I'm really looking forward to the holy month of Ramadhan as it may be the perfect opportunity to figure things out. Please remember me in your prayers.”

She also thanked her family and near and dear ones for "being patient" with her.

Zaira has not had it great with the social media on several occasions as she was once trolled for meeting the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, after which she posted an apology and deleted it. A&nbsptattooed thug was jailed for 16 years by a British court for a horrific and life-changing acid attack on an aspiring Pakistani-origin model and her cousin.

John Tomlin, 25, threw acid at Resham Khan and Jameel Muhktar on June 21, 2017. They were attacked as they were out celebrating Khan's 21st birthday.

Tomlin, who has six teardrops tattooed on his face, attacked the duo while they waited in a car at traffic lights in Beckton, east London. They were doused with acid through the car window.

Khan told Snaresbrook Crown Court that her birthday "turned into a day where my face was taken away from me".

"I have been looking at myself in the mirror it upsets me, it brings back the incident on the day, it doesn't look like me," she added in her victim impact statement. 
Sentencing Tomlin, Judge Sheelagh Canavan said the injuries were "dreadful and life-changing".

"It is becoming all too common an occurrence on our streets that members of the public are pouring water over people who have had acid thrown over them, as if this is some sort of fashionable assault that is being carried out," she said.

Tomlin was seen on CCTV chasing after the car and emptying the bottle of acid over Mr Muhktar as he sped away.

He was arrested after handing himself into the police a month after the attack and said in a police interview that he was "hearing voices in my head".

Khan, a Manchester Metropolitan University student, suffered face and neck injuries and was left with damage to her left eye.

She will carry lifelong scars and has suffered from severe depression and anxiety as a result of the attack, the court heard, the BBC reported.

Mukhtar, 37, who had to be placed in an induced coma, has permanent scarring to his head, neck and body and has lost hearing in one of his ears.

In his victim statement, he told the court he suffers from depression and has tried to take his own life.

"I get flashbacks and am really worried to leave my house, constantly looking over my right shoulder fearing attacks," he added.

"I am mentally and physically scarred for life. I can't even have a relationship," he said.

Helen Taylor, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said it was an "appalling attack that left the victims with physical and psychological scars".

"This case serves as a warning of the harm acid can cause and that those who use it as a weapon can face significant prison sentences," she added.

Man jailed for 16 years for acid attack on Pak duo in UK

A 36-year-old news anchor working with a local Telugu news channel allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of a residential apartment complex, over a "family dispute," police said today.

The incident occurred late last night and the deceased has been identified as V Radhika Reddy, who was under "depression due to some family dispute" with her husband and was now staying at her parents' house, they said.

"After her duty, she came to the house and at around 10:40 pm yesterday she went to the top floor of the building and jumped. 
She suffered multiple injuries and died on the spot," Kukatapally Police Station Inspector V Prasanna Kumar told.

A suicide note purportedly written by her was found in her bag, which stated that she was under "depression" and that no one was responsible for her death and that the brain was her enemy, he said.

She was married around 12 years ago and had two children, but apparently due to some family dispute with her husband she was not staying with him, the police said adding based on preliminary investigation it was found that due to some family issues she was under depression and it was one of the reasons for her to resort to the extreme step.

Police ruled out any foul play behind the incident.

A case was registered and the woman's body was shifted to a state-run hospital and a post-mortem will be conducted today, they said.

Dwayne Johnson known as 'The Rock' has, for the first time, opened up about his struggle with depression as he revealed he had his first brush with the condition when he was a teenager. 
 
"Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn't want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly," Johnson told The Express. 
 
The 45-year-old professional wrestler-turned-actor said he was broken when he saw his mother, Ata, try to commit suicide in front of him, months after they were evicted from their apartment. Dwayne was 15 back then.&nbsp; 
 
"She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic. Big rigs and cars were swerving out of the way. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road. 
 
"What's crazy about that suicide attempt is that to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn't," he said. 
 
Johnson said, years later, his dream of becoming a professional football player turned to dust after he suffered numerous injuries. He signed with the Canadian Football League but was let go within a year. 
Some time after, the actor's girlfriend left him too. 
 
"That was my absolute worst time," he added. 
 
The Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle&nbsp;star said had he not got in touch with his core strength, he believes, he could have become suicidal like his mother.

The eldest son of late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, committed suicide on Thursday aged 68 after being treated for months for depression, Cuban state-run media reported.

Through his mother, Castro Diaz-Balart was the cousin of some of Castro&#39;s most bitter enemies in the Cuban American exile community, U.S. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and former U.S. congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

He was also the subject of a dramatic custody dispute between the two families as a child.

Cuba scholars say his mother took him with her to the United States when he was aged five after announcing she wanted a divorce from Castro, while he was imprisoned for an attack on the Moncada military barracks in Santiago.

Castro was able to bring Fidelito back to Cuba after the 1959 revolution.

A multilingual nuclear physicist who studied in the former Soviet Union, Castro Diaz-Balart was head of Cuba&#39;s national nuclear programme from 1980 to 1992, and spearheaded the development of a nuclear plant on the Caribbean&#39;s largest island until his father fired him.

Cuba halted its plant plans that same year because of a lack of funding after the collapse of Cuba&#39;s trade and aid ties with the ex-Soviet bloc and he largely disappeared from public view appearing at the occasional scientific conference or diplomatic event.
