The 9.7-km Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 corridor of the Delhi Metro's Pink Line was inaugurated by Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri here on Monday, which directly connects south and east Delhi on the rapid transit network.

The new segment is part of the 59-km-long Pink Line, which spans from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar. According to a senior official, passenger services on the corridor will commence from 4 pm.

"This is the sixth time a metro corridor has been inaugurated this year, which is truly a great achievement. The work on the Phase-III of the DMRC has been almost completed with nearly 96 km of it being made operational this year," the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) said.

This extension of the Pink Line, part of the Phase-III of the DMRC network, was inaugurated jointly by Puri and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia from Metro Bhawan.

Only a 1.4-km stretch between Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 and Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake stations of the Pink Line remain to be linked.

The Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 corridor has five stations -- Lajpat Nagar, Vinobapuri, Ashram, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Mayur Vihar Ph-I and Mayur Vihar Pocket-1.

Mayur Vihar Ph-I and Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 are elevated stations and the rest are underground, the official said.

This section has one interchange station, Mayur Vihar Ph-1. The facility of interchange of metro trains between line seven and line 3/4 is available through this station.

"South and east Delhi have now been connected directly on the network and commuters can save time by using it, who otherwise had to rely on road transport or a longer route on the Delhi Metro," Puri said.

"The new Mayur Vihar Ph-1 station is an engineering marvel as it has been constructed on a narrow road with only 13 metres of width. The viaduct adjacent to the station passes at a height of 23 metre and goes above the Dwarka&nbsp;Noida Blue Line viaduct as well as a road flyover. The new station has a length of 140 metre and has 11 escalators and six lifts," the DMRC said.

Trains will operate between Majlis Park and Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 at a peak hour frequency of 5 minutes and 12 seconds. During the non-peak hours, the frequency will be five minutes and 45 seconds.

A total 29 trains will be operational on this line, officials said.

The Hazrat Nizamuddin Metro station on the Majlis Park Shiv Vihar Pink Corridor of Delhi Metro's Phase-3 will become one of the metro network's major transit hubs as the station would provide direct connectivity with the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station as well as the Sarai Kale Khan Inter State Bus Terminus.

"The station will have dedicated entry/exit points connecting to the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station and the ISBT at Sarai Kale Khan. One of the entry/exit points will be within a vicinity of 50 metre from the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT. Another entry/exit will be near the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station approximately at a distance of 150 metre," the official said.

With the opening of the new section of the Pink Line, the total operational length of the DMRC has increased to 327 km with 236 stations.

India already has a 515-kilometre functional network of metro tracks in various cities and 15 more will soon have over 660 kilometres of tracks for rapid urban transportation, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday.

Interacting with the members of the Consultative Committee attached to the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry, Puri spoke about new urban transport initiatives in India.

According to a statement released by the housing and urban affairs minister, the state governments and union territories have been advised to prepare and submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in line with the provisions in the Metro Rail Policy 2017.

"Hardeep S Puri, Minister of State (I/C) for Housing and Urban Affairs has stated that more than 664 kms of metro rail projects in 15 cities are presently under various stages of implementation, while more than 515 kms of metro line are already operational in India," the statement said.

He said several new cities are now aspiring to have metro rail systems.

To bring together the technology and service providers, policy makers, officials in urban transport from India and abroad, the 11th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference is planned from November 2-4 at Nagpur, with the theme "Green Mobility" to disseminate up-to-date and best urban transport practices information to the cities, he added.

21-year-old Mayur Patel had a narrow escape while crossing the Delhi metro rail tracks. Patel was crossing the track and was almost at the other end when the train started moving.&nbsp;

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has slammed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) recent move to hike parking charges. Kejriwal noted that the move of increasing parking fare, "will completely kill Delhi Metro".

The chief minister noted that the decision will result in an increase in congestion and pollution on the city's roads.

DMRC has announced an increase in parking fees across different slabs by 50 per cent.

Delhi Metro's statement notified the increase in the parking charges citing "higher charges by civic agencies".&nbsp;

"The Metro parking charges have not been changed for the last five years and the current charges are very much lower than the parking charges being levied by civic agencies for their parking lots," the statement read.&nbsp;

Parking charges for four-wheeler vehicles for six hours have been increased from Rs 20 to Rs 30. For parking up to 12 hours, the charge has been increased from Rs 30 to Rs 50.&nbsp;

For two-wheelers, the charges have been increased to Rs 15 and Rs 25 from Rs 10 and Rs 15 respectively for six and twelve-hour parking.&nbsp;

'Will completely kill Delhi Metro,' Kejriwal says after parking fare hike

The Delhi Metro has posted a steady rise in ridership since October, with nearly 27 lakh commuters taking the rapid transit network daily in February, officials said on Thursday.

The latest figures come after a drop in average ridership last October when its daily average ridership was 24.2 lakh.

&quot;The highest (daily average) ridership achieved in December 2017 was 25.64 lakh while in January 2018, the figure stood at 26.85 lakh. The highest ridership in February has been even higher, at 26.98 lakhs,&quot; the DMRC said in a statement.

&quot;It has also been noticed that metro ridership, after a drop in October 2017, is registering a steady increase. In January 2018, the overall ridership of Delhi Metro was 69,000 more than the preceding month, indicating an upward trend.

Continuing the upward trend, the average monthly ridership increased by 80,000 passengers in February,&quot; the DMRC said in the statement.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that ridership has seen an upward trend between the opening of a corridor of the Magenta Line in December and a section of the Pink Line in March. The total number of interchange stations has now grown to 16 while the operational span of the network has now expanded to 252 km.

A senior official said that it was a record that five new stations had been added to the network in a span of a little over two months.

&quot;This is for the first time that a record five new interchange stations have been added to the network in a period of just a little over two months,&quot; he said.

The official said the five new interchange stations -- Azadpur, Netaji Subash Place and Rajouri Garden on the Pink Line; and Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir on the Magenta Line -- will enable commuters to have access to a number of alternate and shorter routes from one point to another across Delhi-NCR.

The 21.56 km-long Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of the Pink Line was opened to public yesterday. The 12.94 km-long Kalkaji Mandir-Botanical Garden corridor of the Magenta Line was opened on December 25.

The 11 old interchange stations are -- Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Sikanderur, Yamuna Bank, Kirti Nagar, Dwarka Sec-21, New Delhi, Ashok Park Main, Inderlok and Mandi House.

These new sections and interchange stations of metro&#39;s phase three will not only help in addition of new passengers but will also help realign and decongest some of the existing stations once the entire phase three becomes operational, the official said.

The DMRC said that the average daily ridership of the Kalkaji Mandir-Botanical Garden section was about 45,000 in January.

In February about 49,000 passengers travelled by Magenta line everyday which indicates that in the rest of the corridors, there was an increase of over 30,000 every day, the DMRC said.

The over 20 km-long Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of Delhi Metro&#39;s Pink Line is all set to be thrown open to the public on Wednesday evening, with an end-to-end travel time of 34 minutes.

The new corridor, will also for the first time, connect the north and south campuses of the Delhi University, on the metro network, which can be commuted in 40 minutes.

With the opening of the 21.56 km-long section, the Delhi Metro&#39;s operational network will expand to nearly 252 km, a senior DMRC official said.

The new corridor is slated to be formally flagged off by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday at 4:00 pm from the Metro Bhawan here.

Passenger services on the stretch will begin from 6 pm onwards on the same day from both Majlis Park and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus stations simultaneously, the official said, adding that &quot;the end-to-end travel time on this section of the Pink Line would be 34 minutes&quot;.

It would prove a big boon for commuters, especially students, who till now had to travel either by road from the North Campus or take the Airport Line metro till Dhaula Kuan and commute again on road.

The North Campus area of Delhi University already has a metro station -- Vishwavidyalaya, which falls on the Yellow Line that connects Samaypur Badli to Huda City Centre in Gurgaon.

&quot;The ticket from Vishwavidyalaya station to Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus station will cost Rs 50. And, from Majlis Park station to South Campus station, it will cost Rs 40. On Sundays and national holidays anyway, the fare is less than the regular cost,&quot; the senior official said.

Azadpur Station (with Yellow Line) is one of the three interchange stations on the Pink Line stretch that opens on March 14, the other two being, Netaji Subhash Place (with Red Line) and Rajouri Garden (Blue Line).

The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), which inspected the stretch from February 26-28, has given the clearance for the project.

This section, which has 12 stations, is part of the 59 km-long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line Line 7) of Delhi Metro&#39;s Phase 3. All the stations have platform-screen doors.

The stations are -- Majlis Park, Azadpur, Shalimar Bagh, Netaji Subhash Place, Shakurpur, Punjabi Bagh West, ESI Hospital, Rajouri Garden, Mayapuri, Naraina Vihar, Delhi Cantt and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus.

Out of the 12 stations, eight are elevated and the rest underground. As with the recently-opened Magenta Line, broad-sized coaches from the new rolling stock will ply on the standard gauge Pink line.

Metro&#39;s new generation trains, which can run without drivers, will also run on this section where an advanced Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology that will facilitate the movement of trains with a frequency of 90 to 100 seconds will also be pressed into service.

However, for an initial period of two-three years, the trains will have drivers.

&quot;For the first time travelators have been installed at the foot over bridges to facilitate interchange at Rajouri Garden and South Campus stations,&quot; the official said.

As the festival of colours, Holi, draws closer, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has issued guidelines for Metro rail service operation on the day of the festival. Metro services will not be available on March 2 until 2.30pm.

Passengers will be able to commute via metro after 2.30 pm on the same the day. However, the metro feeder bus services are not likely to operate that day.

The Airport Express line is also expected to get into normal operations on March 2 post 2.30 pm.&nbsp;

The new Metro line will provide major relief to Delhiites as it will provide an additional and more direct connectivity to the commuters travelling from Noida to south Delhi as they will be able to off at Kalkaji Mandir station instead of changing trains at Rajiv Chowk. The section has nine stations in which Kalkaji Mandir is an underground and the others are on the elevated platform.
