The Supreme Court of Western Australia allowed a 62-year-old woman to remove sperm from the dead body of her husband so that it could be used in posthumous fertilisation.

An urgent court application was submitted by the woman after the death of her 61-year-old husband late last year. The dead body of her husband was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, however, the court was informed that the woman was forced to apply for an order after the hospital promptly failed to make a “designated officer” available who could look into the woman's request of removing the sperm from the dead body of her husband and storing it, while the sperm still remained viable.

While hearing the application, the court got to know that the couple - whose names were not published due to legal reasons - had two children, however, both of them tragically died in separate accidents.

After the deaths of their children, the couple had discussed having another child, however, the woman was advised by a fertility expert that she could not conceive because of her age. When the man's sperm were tested, it was found that it remained viable.

The court was also informed that a 20-year-old cousin had volunteered to go through the IVF procedure and become a surrogate for the couple. However, the couple was living in a different country, and the woman thought the couple was required to legally live in the country for a particular period of time before going ahead with the surrogacy.

Couple failed to go for surrogacy

However, the couple missed the opportunity to move because of the pandemic, work commitments and the death of the woman's mother-in-law. While giving a verdict on the application, Judge Fiona Seaward permitted the woman to remove the sperm, however, not use it because that would need a separate court order.

“These orders are limited to permitting the removal of the spermatozoa and do not constitute authorisation for the spermatozoa to be used by the applicant, and do not in any way consider whether the applicant can or could meet any statutory criteria in that regard,” the judge said.

Currently, Western Australia does not permit posthumous fertilisation. The woman for taking the next step and using the sperm needs to apply for the case to get transferred to another jurisdiction which allows the procedure.

Seaward, in her decision, also reprimanded the hospital for not being able to make a “designated officer” available in a timely manner to the woman, which would have stopped the woman from filing a hasty court application.

“It is disappointing that it appears that, once again, an applicant has been required to attend court on an urgent basis and in traumatic circumstances to obtain an order that may, if the designated officer considered all criteria to be met, be granted in a faster and more streamlined manner,” she said.

However, as per the records, the company was dissolved in December 2021 and the couple had to face a financial crisis. Late actor Matthew Perry, who had for years struggled with addiction, had planned to build a foundation for those battling substance abuse.

He had earlier founded Perry House, a men’s sober living facility which operated from the actor's Malibu home. It ran for two years before hitting financial constraints.

During his life, Perry had a long struggle with addiction. He later also opened up about his subsequent journey to sobriety and was a strong advocate of helping others cope with addiction. He revealed in October 2022 that he almost died at 49 due to his increasing drug addiction, and was in a coma for two weeks, fighting for his life. This was followed by a stay in the hospital for five months, as well as a year using a colostomy bag after his colon burst due to opioid overuse.

Meanwhile, sources who were in touch with Perry told TMZ that he had "never been happier" before his death. The Friends star had only just moved into his new house three weeks ago and was enjoying his current phase in life.

Sources also told the news outlet that Perry recently committed to acting in a new movie as well as other projects. He had also been coming up with ideas for scripts, and his life appeared to be optimistic.

Iranian teenager Armita Garawand on Saturday (Oct 28) died a month after she fell into a coma after a disputed incident took place on Tehran's metro, reported the country's local media.

"Armita Garawand, a student in Tehran, died an hour ago after intensive medical treatment and 28 days of hospitalisation in intensive care," stated the Borna news agency, which has been affiliated with the country's youth ministry.

Weeks ago, the teenage girl had suffered injuries in a mysterious incident which took place inside the metro of Tehran while she was not wearing a head scarf.

Doctors claim a sudden drop in Geravand's blood pressure

For days, Geravand was hospitalised in Tehran and slipped into a state of coma. The 16-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in Tehran after she was found unconscious on the metro.

On October 3, the Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw was the first one to report her case, stating that she was critically injured during an incident which took place on the underground train network.

However, the government authorities claimed that Geravand's blood pressure suddenly dropped and denied any "physical or verbal altercations" happened between her and other passengers.

The rights groups, meanwhile, claimed that the teenage girl was critically wounded after members of Iran's morality police allegedly assaulted her.

Declared dead by the doctors, a newborn baby was found alive minutes before the cremation in Silchar, Assam. On Wednesday, doctors at a private hospital in Assam declared a newborn baby dead. However, a few minutes before the cremation, the parents found that the child was alive, PTI reported. When Ratan Das, 29, took his six-month pregnant wife to a private hospital on Tuesday evening, the doctors told them that her pregnancy had some challenges and they could save either the baby or the mother. Das said, "We allowed them to perform the delivery. They told me my wife had given birth to a stillborn child." The doctors handed them the body of their child and a death certificate. However, the child cried as Das and his wife reached the Silchar crematorium and opened the packet containing the body for cremation. "We rushed back to the hospital, and the baby is now under treatment," Das added. After the incident, a group from Silchar's Malinibil area gathered in front of the hospital and staged a protest. A resident of Silchar, Sujit Das Choudhary, said the hospital authorities treated the newborn baby like garbage by keeping him in a packet for over eight hours without examining if he was alive. Das's family has lodged a first information report (FIR) against the hospital and the doctor. The Assam police have not given any official statement about the incident. The incident occurred in July 2023. However, as the family was preparing for the last rites of the baby girl, a relative pointed out that the child was breathing. A similar incident occurred in Jammu and Kashmir's Banihal, where the parents found that their newborn baby, declared dead by the doctors, was alive after they dug her out of the grave. Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a veteran apartheid-era South African politician and Zulu prince, died at 95, the country's president announced on Saturday. He stated, "I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Prince of KwaPhindangene, Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation, and the Founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party." The Zulu chief was a controversial figure who had a seat in South Africa's National Assembly. He had a long political career, during which he led a movement that underwent deadly clashes with the African National Congress. Here's everything you need to know about Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Mangosuthu Buthelezi education & early political career Mangosuthu Buthelezi was born on 27 August,1928 in Mahlabatini, South Africa. He came from a line of Zulu chiefs. Buthelezi attended the South African Native College and was a member of ANC's Youth League. He completed his degree from the University of Natal. He started his career at South Africa's Department of Native Affairs in 1951. In 1953, he assumed his role as the hereditary chief of the Bulthelezi clan of Zulus. However, the South African government did not recognise his chieftainship until 1957. In 1970, he became the chief executive officer of the newly formed Zulu Territorial Authority. Two years later, he became the chief executive councillor of the KwaZulu Legislative Assembly. In 1976, he became the chief minister of the KwaZulu Bantustan, a collection of 11 scattered Zulu exclaves located within the Natal province. In 1975, the former ANC member founded Inkatha, a movement he converted to the Inkatha Freedom Party in 1990, an outfit based on an ideology of Zulu nationalism. However, he had a pro-capitalist stance, contrary to the socialist ideals embraced by other black liberation groups. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Inkatha had a strong following in KwaZulu-Natal and Transvaal Provinces. However, the violent clashes between Inkatha and the ANC during this period are considered one of the deadliest in South African history and hurt Buthelezi's political career. Later, ANC leader Nelson Mandela appointed him Minister of Home Affairs in a coalition government. Even when Mandela left office, he retained his seat in the National Assembly. At least 27 people have died because of the extratropical cyclone in several cities in southern Brazil. More than 1,600 people have become homeless, authorities said on Wednesday. Since Monday night, the storm has struck more than 60 cities. Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite said the death toll was the state's highest due to a climate event. Leite mentioned 15 deaths occurred in the same house in Mucum, a city of 50,000 residents. He said one of those killed was a woman who was swept away by heavy torrents during a rescue attempt. "The wire broke, and she and a rescuer fell. Unfortunately, the woman did not survive and the rescuer is seriously injured," he stated. The search and rescue teams worked more in regions around the Taquari Valley, located 150 kilometres northwest of the state capital, Porto Alegre, which recorded the most victims and damage due to the flood and storm. More heavy rains will batter the state's central-south region, sparing the worst-hit areas, CNBC reported. The authorities continued flooding warnings for the Jacui Cai and Taquari rivers. Some videos showed people on the top of their houses, pleading for help as rivers overflowed their banks and wide avenues turned into fast-moving streams. According to reports, while many victims died of electrical shock, some were trapped in their vehicles. Mucum City Hall advised the citizens to store supplies for the next 72 hours. Leite described the cyclone as "an absolutely out of the ordinary event." The flooding also hit Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria on Tuesday, killing at least seven people, AP reported. However, it is not the first time an extratropical storm has hit Rio Grande do Sul. In June, a cyclone killed at least 16 people and caused damage in 40 cities, among which many were around Porto Alegre. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Steve Harwell, a founding member and former leader of the US rock band Smash Mouth, known for its hit songs "All Star" and "Walkin' on the Sun," died Monday at age 56, his agent said.

Harwell, who left the group in 2021 for health reasons and had been in hospice care in recent days, died at his home in Boise, Idaho "surrounded by family and friends," Smash Mouth manager Robert Hayes told Rolling Stone magazine.

Hayes said the cause of death was liver failure.

Harwell was a singer who founded Smash Mouth in California in 1994 along with Kevin Coleman on drums, Greg Camp on guitar, and Paul De Lisle playing bass.

The group is still active and its style is described as a mix of pop, rock, ska and punk.

Smash Mouth shot to worldwide fame in 1997 with its album "Fush Yu Mang" and the hit song "Walkin' on the Sun."

"'Walkin' on the Sun' changed music," Harwell told Rolling Stone in 2019. "It changed the way people listen to music."

"It was so different and it was so unusual, and it was so special," he said. "It just had that sound that we created. Ask anybody that's tried to copy us, you can't. You just can't."

Two years later came the hit "All Star" on the album "Astro Lounge," a tune that was nominated for a Grammy and features on the soundtrack of the first "Shrek" movie -- about a loveable green ogre voiced by Mike Myers.

More than 25 cover versions of "All Star" have been done over the years, a sign of its popularity, and it has been streamed on Spotify nearly a billion times.

In a statement Hayes paid tribute to Harwell, saying "Steve's iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices from his generation."

With Harwell as lead singer Smash Mouth sold 10 million records around the world, Hayes said.

Since the 2010s, Harwell suffered several health scares either in concert or while rehearsing and cited heart trouble when he left the group.

"Steve lived a 100 per cent full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out," Hayes said.

Lil Tay, whose real name is Claire Hope, has died, according to a post on her verified Instagram account. However, the internet personality's father and former manager couldn't confirm whether the young rapper was dead. The Instagram statement, posted on Wednesday, said her death was sudden, tragic and entirely unexpected. The post also mentioned that her brother, Jason Tian is also dead. Furthermore, the statement said both cases are under probe. "It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of our beloved Claire's sudden and tragic passing. This outcome was entirely unexpected and has left us all in shock. Her brother's passing adds an even more unimaginable depth to our grief," the Instagram statement read. "During this time of immense sorrow, we kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this overwhelming loss, as the circumstances surrounding Claire and her brother's passing are still under investigation," it further stated. Lil Tay's father, Christopher Hope, told Insider he could not comment on the Instagram post and refused to respond whether his daughter was still alive. He also declined to verify if someone else posted the news about Lil Tay's death on her Instagram. ALSO READ | Teen influencer Lil Tay's 'unexpected' death shocks netizens, her brother's demise adds to the mystery Lil Tay's former manager, Harry Tsang, could not confirm or deny the news of her death. "Given the complexities of the current circumstances, I am at a point where I cannot definitively confirm or dismiss the legitimacy of the statement issued by the family," Tsang told Insider. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the county medical examiner had no details on a probe into the demise of anyone named Claire Hope. Even the Vancouver Police Department had no reports of her death and was not probing any such case. Despite the confusion, the word spread swiftly on the internet. Lil Tay came into the limelight in 2017 for her bold onscreen persona on social media. She used to post pictures with mansions, cars and bundles of cash. She disappeared from the internet after a video leaked with a voice behind the camera feeding her lines. After the video leak incident, a battle reportedly transpired for her career's future, with her manager, father, and promoter on one side, and her mother, Angela Tian and brother on the other. After years of inactivity, Lil Tay's Instagram account resurfaced in 2021 with messages purportedly from her brother accusing their father of physical and emotional abuse and taking all of Tay's money. Hope responded to the charges with a stop-and-desist letter to Instagram. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

He was famous for climbing several towering structures around the world. On Saturday, cops visited a Tsim Sha Tsui hostel where Remi Lucidi, 30, checked in on July 17, reported South China Morning Post. A social media post from October 2022 showed him climbing France's tallest chimney and walking around the edge of the 300-metre-high structure without any safety gear. The hostel owner, Gurjit Kaur, told the Post that Lucidi was "humble and friendly." She said, "He was healthy and fit. I feel sad." Police collected his belongings from his room, including his laptop and passport. A night shift worker said he spoke to Lucidi several times. He said he wanted to hike a lot when he was here." 'Enigma' Daredevil Remi Lucidi Remi Lucidi was born in Montpellier City, but he spent his time in Hong Kong, the Daily Mail reported. His first post was a video compilation of the French daredevil climbing various things like cranes, bridges, and a Ferris wheel. Remi Lucidi's Tragic Death Lucidi, who used the name Remi Enigma on his social media pages, ventured onto the residential block in Hong Kong and got trapped on a penthouse window on the 68th floor of Tregunter Tower at about 07:30 pm on Thursday. They found his sports camera, containing videos of his extreme adventures. According to the police, Lucidi arrived at Tregunter Tower around 6 pm on Thursday and told the security guard he was visiting a friend on the 40th floor. Before the guard found out the resident did not know Lucidi, he entered the lift. CCTV footage showed Lucidi getting out on the 49th floor and taking the stairs to the top floor. His latest Instagram picture, posted five days ago with the caption "Hong Kong", showed Times Square in Causeway Bay. Several social media users left "rest in peace" comments on the post. At least 19 dead as passenger boat capsizes by strong winds near Manila

At least five people lost their lives and many others were feared trapped after a mountain village was hit by a landslide in India's western state of Maharashtra after the region was soaked by incessant rain, said the state officials on Thursday (July 20).

The landslide took place in the middle of the night in Irshalwadi, a small mountain village around 60 km from Mumbai, stated media reports citing officials.

"A total of 48 families lived there. Around 75 people have been evacuated and five people have died so far," said Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Twitter.

According to initial reports, around 100 people have been trapped under the debris and efforts are being made by the rescue workers to find survivors in heavy rain as relatives of the victims wait at the base of the mountain for news of their safety.

"The problem here is that at some places the rubble is almost 20 to 30 feet deep and it has to be manually removed," said an unidentified rescue official, while speaking to ABP Majha channel.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Industries Minister Uday Samant said that search operations are going on and 75 people have been rescued so far.

“The incident occurred at 10:30 in the night at a place adjoining Irsalgad in Raigad district. It is a very remote inaccessible area which is hampering rescue attempts. As of now 4 people have died and 25 people have been rescued. More people are feared to be trapped and NDRF and district administration is making attempts to rescue people,” said Minister Samant.

The NDRF informed that the landslide has buried more than 15-20 houses under the debris.

“Of the total 40 houses in the village, 17 have been affected. We have deployed four teams to conduct the rescue operations. The debris at some of the places is 10 to 29 feet deep. It is difficult to bring heavy machinery to this place. It is a 2.8 km trek to reach the spot and we have to remove the debris manually which is likely to take a lot of time. While we are facing difficulties, we will continue our operations till we retrieve the last person,” said SB Singh, Commandant of the fifth battalion of the NDRF, speaking to The Indian Express.

Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was present at the site, while speaking to the reporters said that the officials were not able to figure the exact number of people trapped.
