A man who has been accused of playing a role in the 1991 killing of his wife was extradited earlier this month from Costa Rica, ending his more than three decades on the run, said the US police, on Monday (Jan 22).&nbsp;

In 2022, the man suspected of his wife’s murder, Jose Lazaro Cruz, 60, was arrested in Costa Rica and brought back to Fairfax County, Virginia, earlier this month, ending the 32-year-old case.

On April 30, 1991, the police responded to a call about the stabbing and found Ana Jurado, 24, dead in the street, said Eli Cory, Fairfax County’s deputy chief of investigation. She is said to have suffered a slashing wound to her neck and bled to death, according to the police.&nbsp;

Lazaro Cruz, who was Jurado’s then-estranged husband was identified as the suspected killer and charged a month later, but he fled.&nbsp;

Jurado was the mother of three at the time of her death. Her three-year-old and seven-month-old daughters lived with her in the US while her four-year-old son lived in El Salvador.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Not a typical cold case’</h2>

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, as per CNN, said this case is not a “traditional cold case” as Lazaro Cruz was identified right away, he was just “on the lam.”

According to the police, Lazaro Cruz, after the murder tried to flee to Canada but was refused entry due to falsified documents. Cory also said that one of the border agents said they noticed what appeared to be a “fresh cut” on his hand at the time.

The suspected murderer then managed to evade authorities and travelled to Houston, Texas, from where he is believed to have been smuggled out of the United States with the help of a smuggler, eventually ending up in El Salvador.&nbsp;

However, at the time, El Salvador did not have any mechanisms or policies in place which would allow Lazaro Cruz’s extradition. It was not until 2000, that the country’s constitution was amended, which allowed extradition of Salvadoran nationals.

In 2022, the US Justice Department said that Lazaro Cruz had been detained by Costa Rican authorities while trying to enter their country from Nicaragua.&nbsp;

According to Cory, Lazaro Cruz remarried and had several children since the 1991 killing and “definitely started a whole new life in El Salvador.”&nbsp;

As of now though, while the official charges against him are being sorted, the alleged murderer is in the Fairfax County Correctional Center awaiting trial.

US: Husband accused of wife’s murder extradited from Costa Rica after evading arrest for 30 years

Ecuadorean prosecutor Cesar Suarez, who focused on pursuing organized trans-national crime in Guayas province, one of the country's most violent areas and the site of an on-air attack on a television station last week, has been killed, the attorney general said on Wednesday.

Suarez, who had been placed in charge of investigating the television station attack, was traveling to a court hearing when he was killed, the council of the judiciary said in a statement condemning the attack.

The killing had the hallmarks of an assassination, police said in a statement, adding that the victim sustained a number of gunshot wounds.

Ecuador has suffered a recent burst of violence, including the gunmen interrupting the broadcast at TC Television in Guayaquil, the hostage-taking of more than 200 prison staff, explosions in several cities and the kidnapping of police officers.

As per video footage of the incident — including bystander video — on March 3, 2020, the officers punched 33-year-old Manuel Ellis and put him in a chokehold from behind. They also shot him with a stun gun and knelt on his back, which cut off Ellis' air supply.

Witness testimonies and the videos showed that Ellis was walking home after getting doughnuts from a 7-Eleven when he passed a police patrol car at a red light. Inside the car were Collins and Burbank.

The two officers claim they saw Ellis try to force open the door of a passing car, and that he became aggressive upon questioning. Collins, as per AP, also testified that Manuel Ellis demonstrated "superhuman strength" and&nbsp;lifted him off the ground and threw him through the air.&nbsp;

However, three witnesses testified that they saw no such thing and that Ellis didn't do anything to provoke the officers.&nbsp;

They said that after a brief conversation, the two white officers knocked down Ellis, even as he&nbsp;held up his hand in surrender. However, Burbank still shot him in the chest with a taser. A doorbell surveillance camera corroborated this.&nbsp;

Soon, many officers appeared for backup. Among them was Rankine, who arrived after Ellis was already handcuffed face-down. The officer knelt on Ellis' upper back.

Video evidence showed the victim addressing the officers as 'sir' and telling them he can't breathe. During his testimony, Rankine called the death a tragedy, but said: "The only response at that point that I could think of is, 'If you can talk to me, you can still breathe'".

The 25-year-old woman came to know that his brother was having an illicit relationship with his sister-in-law. She asked him to end it and threatened that otherwise she would inform others about it.

To stop her, he hatched a plan, police said.

On the day of the incident, the woman went to a nearby forest to collect Siali leaves. Her elder brother was also there with his cows.&nbsp;

He called his four friends to the forest, got them drunk and under the influence of alcohol, they took turns in raping her, police said.

As the woman fought back, they strangulated her, and then attacked her with an axe, killing her on the spot, said Lalit Mohan Sagar, the inspector-in-charge of Chakapad police station.

The brother also lodged a missing person's complaint with the police on November 6, he said.

The woman's decomposed body was found in the forest on November 7, and in the post-mortem examination, it was found that she was raped by multiple people before being killed, he added.

Michael in the report released on Tuesday (Nov 28) said, "The offences that Fuller committed were truly shocking and he will never be released from prison."

He chalked up Fuller's barbarities to "failures of management, of governance, of regulation, failure to follow standard policies and procedures, together with a persistent lack of curiosity."

As per the report, there was "little regard" given to who was accessing the mortuary. It said that Fuller, who worked as the maintenance supervisor at hospitals, visited the mortuaries around 444 times in a year, yet it went "unnoticed and unchecked".

Talking to reporters, he also said&nbsp;senior bosses were allegedly "aware of problems in the running of the mortuary from as early as 2008".

<h2>How can such crimes be prevented?</h2>

The inquiry, as per BBC, has made 17 recommendations to prevent "similar atrocities". These include the installation of CCTV cameras in mortuaries and post-mortem rooms. Making it compulsory for maintenance staff to carry out tasks in these areas in pairs was also recommended.

Furthermore, it recommended that the "practice of leaving deceased people out of mortuary fridges overnight" or while maintenance is carried out should be put to an end.

Another inquiry to review how the deceased are cared for around the UK was launched in July and its findings are expected to be released in 2024.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar confirmed that the suspect, who as per the Irish Times, had sustained wounds believed to be self-inflicted, was detained. The media report also said that a man tried to attack a number of young people when people intervened.&nbsp;

Since then, the country's murder rate has tripled to 25 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Even so, experts said the latest wave of violence was particularly shocking.

"Guerrero has long seen one of Mexico's most complicated armed conflicts, but the current, pre-electoral levels of violence are extraordinary," Falko Ernst, an analyst at International Crisis Group, wrote on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Since taking office in 2018, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has championed "hugs not bullets" strategy to tackle violent crime at its roots by fighting poverty and inequality with social programs, rather than with the army.

Balesh Kumar, who had been leading a life under a new identity as Aman Singh and working as a property dealer in west Delhi's Najafgarh area, was taken into custody on September 28.

After his retirement from the Indian Navy as a steward in 1996,&nbsp;Kumar entered the transport business. Originally hailing from Haryana's Panipat, he had limited formal education, having completed studies up to Class 8.

He managed to hide&nbsp;his existence for years, living with his family under the guise of Aman Singh and working as a property dealer.

On April 18, 2004, in an inebriated state, Balesh Kumar allegedly murdered his brother-in-law, Rajesh, at Transport Nagar in Samaypur Badli.

His brother, Sunder Lal, was also purportedly involved in the crime and was subsequently arrested. However, Kumar managed to evade capture by fleeing to the northern state of Rajasthan in his truck, accompanied by two labourers.

In Rajasthan, he resorted to an unthinkable act, setting his own truck ablaze with the two labourers inside, resulting in their tragic deaths. During the investigation by the Rajasthan police, one of the deceased was identified as&nbsp;Kumar, while the other remained unidentified. Kumar confessed that he orchestrated this horrifying act to ensure his wife could claim insurance and pension benefits. This revelation adds a sinister dimension to his carefully constructed ruse.

The remainder of the sale price was received through two separate cheques.

The criminals, posing as ED officers, descended upon Sundar's residence, accusing him of harbouring illicit funds.

In this swift fake operation, they confiscated the entire cash stash, making away with the significant sum. Not content with this theft, the culprits also seized the mobile phones belonging to both Sundar and his mother.

As the investigation unfolded, the arrested suspect, identified as Amit, provided a crucial lead.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert on Sunday morning, prompting an exhaustive search as they suspected her disappearance might be an abduction case. According to the alert, she was a 1.37 metres tall white girl with brown hair and green eyes. Charlotte's family had pleaded with the public to find their daughter and asked to provide any tips to the police. According to Hochul, the authorities took Charlotte to a local hospital. However, she appeared unharmed and reunited with her family. The case is currently an active investigation, and Ross is still under interrogation. McDonald pleaded guilty to charges of criminal mistreatment, ID theft, and tampering with a witness after changing her original not-guilty plea entered on November 19, 2021.&nbsp;

According to court filings presented at the&nbsp;Multnomah County Detention Center,&nbsp;McDonald will be released on October 6 after serving her 30-day sentence.
