A US couple who ran a so-called 'green funeral home' in Colorado were told by a court to pay&nbsp;$950 million to victims' families, nearly a year after some 190 decaying corpses were recovered from their facility. 
 
The decision announced by the victims' lawyer on Monday (Aug 5) came after authorities found that Jon and Carie Hallford, owners of&nbsp;Return to Nature funeral home in Penrose, Colorado, had given fake ashes to grieving relatives after taking their loved ones' bodies for 'green burials'.

In October 2023, after reports of foul smell from their green funeral home, 190 bodies or body parts were recovered by investigators in a case that shocked America.

The couple had claimed that their burial services were environment-friendly,&nbsp;without the use of chemicals such as embalming fluids, and used biodegradable caskets to dispose of&nbsp;the bodies.

After the bodies were recovered, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) helped in the laborious process of identifying the bodies through DNA testing. Several could not be identified.

Hallford&nbsp;who is in custody and his wife who is out on bail did not attend the court proceedings.

The criminal charges they faced included corpse abuse, theft, money laundering and forgery. State prosecutors had offered them a plea deal on 190 counts of abuse of a corpse but that is yet to come to fruition.

“I’m never going to get a dime from them, so, I don’t know, it’s a little frustrating,” Page said about the ruling, as quoted by AP news agency.

Christopher Gregor of New Jersey had become notorious as the 'treadmill dad' after security camera footage emerged showing him continuously placing his son Corey Micciolo on the running machine, apparently because he thought he was "fat".

The incident happened at the Atlantic Heights Clubhouse in March 2021. Corey fell sick, was hospitalised, and eventually died on 2 April 2021.

On Friday (Aug&nbsp;2),&nbsp;Ocean County judge Guy P Ryan sentenced Gregor to 20 years in jail for aggravated manslaughter and five years&nbsp;for endangering the welfare of a child for Corey's death. The 31-year-old managed to escape the murder charge. The sentences will run concurrently, said the judge.

The jury had seen the CCTV clips from the clubhouse gym, which became crucial evidence. The footage, which had gone viral, showed how Gregor placed his son repeatedly on the treadmill.

Most of those detained were paid members of the networks, suspected of viewing and trading in illegal pornography, as well as uploading content.

Members paid in cryptocurrency and network tokens to join the porn ring, Lin said, adding that transactions were done in accounts as well as web domains registered overseas.

Chuangyi Sifang was raided after TV host Mickey Huang's indictment in May for allegedly possessing child pornography. Huang was reportedly a paid member of the network since 2014, reported Taipei Times citing the Taichung Prosecutors’ Office.

Police arrested a man surnamed Chang who was reportedly managing Chuangyi Sifang forum. The owner of the forum is thought to be Lao Ma, a Chinese citizen based in China, according to Taiwanese authorities. Currency worth US$30,454 was confiscated in the raid.

As quoted in the report, Wong Wai-kei, who is a senior inspector of the computer forensic lab, said: "In the past, our approach involved a colleague sitting in front of a screen for an hour to watch a one-hour closed-circuit television footage."&nbsp;

Customs and Excise Department in Hong Kong to study AI use to tackle digital crimes

In a scene straight out of a Bollywood flick, a man who was murdered in the western Indian city of Mumbai on Wednesday (Jul 24) had tattoos of the names of&nbsp;22 persons that could have potentially harmed him, on his body. The police arrested three suspects whose names were found inked on the man, identified as 48-year-old Guru Waghmare.&nbsp;

Waghmare was murdered at Soft Touch Spa in central Mumbai's Worli, according to news wire agency PTI. The victim&nbsp;claimed to be a Right to Information (RTI) activist but was a history-sheeter with several cases pending against him.&nbsp;

The spa owner, Santosh Sherekar was one of the arrested accused after his name was found tattooed on Waghmare's body.&nbsp;According to police, Sherekar was fed up with Waghmare's&nbsp;extortion threats and allegedly hired contract killers to murder him.

Sherekar gave the killing contract to&nbsp;Mohammed Feroze Ansari (26) and also paid him Rs 6 lakh ($7,166). The woman, who is married, had gone to Pakistan last year with her two children and reportedly married&nbsp;her Instagram lover.&nbsp;She had initially gone on a one-month visa, and wanted to stay on for another six months, for which she filed an application with the Indian authorities. The application was rejected and at the same time, she came under lens of Indian security agencies.

It emerged that she had made a fake Aadhaar card (the Indian identity document) and&nbsp;a PAN card (used for taxation and identity purposes). She also forged the birth certificate and got a passport under a fake name.

She managed to pass police verification for passport using the forged documents and travelled to Pakistan in October last year, according to police.

She stayed in Pakistan for nearly two months and returned.&nbsp;

The mother of two girls had gone to live in Thane with her mother, after suffering abuse from her husband. Khan told police she faked her identity as she was afraid of her husband's wrath.&nbsp;

The woman told police that she became friends with the Pakistani man over Instagram. The friendship progressed into love, and they decided to marry. For that, she&nbsp;visited the Pakistani man in Abbottabad city near Pakistani capital Islamabad.

An elderly prisoner has escaped after being taken to hospital in the United Kingdom, with the Met Police launching a manhunt and asking the public for information.

In a release on Friday, Met Police said&nbsp;Graham Gomm, 63, was taken to Hammersmith Hospital by prison staff on Thursday (July 18)&nbsp;after falling sick.&nbsp;Gomm was being held for burglary.

"Police were alerted at around 01:18hrs on Thursday, 18 July that Gomm had escaped," the Met Police said, adding the 63-year-old was wearing a grey t-shirt and grey tracksuit.

A manhunt is on for the Gomm&nbsp;and the forces are examining CCTV footage.

"Officers are carrying out searches, working closely with partners, conducting CCTV enquiries and have visited a number of addresses linked to Gomm," said the Met release. 
 
"If anyone sees Gomm they are asked not to approach him but they should call 999," it added. 
 
BBC reported citing a&nbsp;police spokesperson that there was concern about the 63-year-old's welfare, as he was undergoing medical treatment before he escaped.

A 23-year-old tribal woman allegedly killed her 4-year-old daughter and then committed suicide following a fight with her husband in India's Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Tuesday.

Queiroz, accused of driving the car used in the crime, and Lessa, suspected of firing the gun, made plea bargain agreements with authorities, with Lessa providing information on who gave the order to kill Franco.

Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said Lessa gave investigators important new information last week that would allow them to solve the case "soon."

Franco, 38, was a black, openly gay and progressive council member born in a poor Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood. Investigators believe her killing to be a political assassination carried out by paid hit men.

Gunmen in Nigeria have kidnapped at least 87 people, including women and children in Kaduna state, residents and police said on Monday, in a fresh attack after an armed gang seized&nbsp;286 students&nbsp;and staff from a school earlier this month.

Kidnappings by criminal gangs demanding ransom payments have become an almost daily occurrence in Nigeria, especially in the north, with authorities seemingly powerless to stop them.

Kaduna police spokesperson Mansur Hassan confirmed the incident in Kajuru Station village on Sunday night but could not give a figure of those missing. He said security agents had been deployed to try to rescue the villagers.

Tanko Wada Sarkin, a village head, said 87 people were taken.

"We have so far recorded the return of five people back home who fled through the bushes. This attack makes it five times that these bandits are attacking this community," he told Reuters by phone.

Residents said armed men dressed in army uniform arrived in the village undetected because they had parked their motorbikes away from the village.

Aruwa Ya'u, another resident, said he was captured but later released by the gunmen because he struggled to walk due to poor health. He was receiving treatment at a local government clinic, he said.

Gunmen are known to force-march their victims deep into the bush, keeping them for up to months while awaiting ransom payments.

"We were outside our homes chatting around 10:30 p.m. (2130 GMT) and suddenly bandits appeared, beating and shooting," said Haruna Atiku. His wife and two daughters were among those missing.

The village is about 10 km (6 miles) from Buda community, where&nbsp;gunmen seized 61 people&nbsp;on March 12.

During the brief hearing, the Scotsburn man was present in the court following his arrest on Wednesday morning, wearing an orange hi-vis shirt. His lawyer claimed that his client was at risk of self-harm.

<h2>About the case</h2>

Murphy, 51, was last seen when she left her house to go on a run on February 4 at around 7:00 am (local time). However, when she failed to show up for a brunch until afternoon the police launched a massive search operation.&nbsp;

The Victoria police chief commissioner, Shane Patton, said that they will allege that Murphy’s murder was a “deliberate act” and occurred on the day she disappeared near Mount Clear.&nbsp;

“I’m not going to go into the details, motive or any of those further details in regards to what has or hasn’t happened when she has (allegedly) been killed. I will simply say he has been charged with murder, which by its definition means it was an intentional act,” Patton told reporters.&nbsp;

He also said that the accused had not yet disclosed the location of the victim’s body and called on the public to come forward with any information which may help police locate it.

Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz remanded the accused in custody, who will reappear for a hearing on August 8.&nbsp;

The Victoria police chief thanked dozens of officers from multiple law enforcement agencies involved in the search but said that their work is “far from over”. Patton said that they will continue their investigation.&nbsp;

“I know that Samantha’s disappearance has had a profound impact on the Ballarat community,” Patton noted.&nbsp;

The 51-year-old, mother of three, was last seen on security cameras in her driveway. Murphy who was carrying her watch, phone, and headphones is yet to be found. However, the police previously warned that it is unlikely that she was still alive.

Samantha’s husband, Mick said he felt “relief” after hearing a man had been charged, reported the local media.&nbsp;

Murphy played an active role in the Ballarat community and her friends and family have closely followed her case with many volunteering to join the search.&nbsp;

This comes as the Jharkhand police&nbsp;on Monday, handed over $12 thousand&nbsp;(₹10 lakhs) in compensation to the couple.

"We did a fast investigation and from the side of district administration, we are providing all the help to them (rape survivor and husband). Under the victim compensation scheme, we have given them Rs 10 lakh. We will try for a speedy trial and conviction of the accused," said Anjaneyulu Dodde, Deputy Commissioner.

<h2>Court seeks police report</h2>

As per media reports, a Division Bench of the court, led by Acting Chief Justice S Chandrashekhar sought a report from Jharkhand's Chief Secretary and Director-General of Police (DGP), as well as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Dumka district.

"As we read from the newspaper reports, 'X' is a Spanish-speaking person, but it is not known whether there is the facility of a translator with the help of whom her statement was recorded," said the bench.

"Furthermore, in view of the amendments made in the Code of Criminal Procedure and emphasis on scientific investigation in cases of offences relating to rape, there is an urgent need to seek a report from the Superintendent of Police at Dumka as to the progress of the investigation so far conducted in the matter," the bench added.

The court took note of a First Information Report (FIR) filed against seven individuals in connection with a gang rape, with several arrests already made by the police.&nbsp;

It also noted that the Jharkhand Legal Services Authority has initiated efforts to provide legal and other assistance to the victim.

Referring to a previous suo motu petition, WP(C) No. 3283 of 2023, in which the High Court had highlighted widespread incidents of crimes against women and awaited a response from the Police Department, the court said: "Therefore, this Court takes suo motu cognisance of the aforementioned incident of gang rape and directs the Registry to institute a suo motu writ petition".

“We believe we have located two bodies,” the NSW police commissioner, Karen Webb, told reporters. She added, “The families have been notified. We are very confident we have located Luke and Jesse.”

The bodies were found in surfboard bags under a fence at a property in rural Bungonia and attempts had been made to cover them with “rocks and debris,” said Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty.&nbsp;

<h2>About the case</h2>

Doherty said that the police would allege in court that there was “some type of relationship at some stage” between the NSW officer and the TV presenter. The relationship, according to the police, “did not end well”.&nbsp;

The police believe that the pair was&nbsp;killed on February 19 in Baird’s inner-city home in Paddington and that the two “surf bags” had been used to transport the deceased couple in a white van to the rural property where the bodies were found.&nbsp;

So far, the investigators also found a bullet matching Lamarre’s work-issued gun, a “significant” amount of blood, and upturned furniture in Baird’s home where they believe the murder took place.&nbsp;

Lamarre made “partial admissions” about the alleged murders to an acquaintance who is said to have accompanied him to a separate property in Bungonia – not where the bodies were found.

The NSW officer had left his female acquaintance after breaking the lock on the property and returned around 30 minutes later.&nbsp;

The police believe that the acquaintance whose identity was immediately clear was an “innocent agent” and said that she was fully cooperating with the officers.&nbsp;

Calling Konther "a sexual carnivore", as per The Mercury News, the judge at the sentencing said: "This is like a cat, a lion, a cheetah looking for prey."

"Vultures don’t do this to their young, rats don't do this."

<h2>How the conviction happened</h2>

Despite sharing identical DNA, covertly recorded conversations between the twin brothers after their arrests exposed incriminating statements by Kevin Konther.&nbsp;

While the twin brother has not faced charges, recorded discussions show that he was shocked by the allegations levied against Kevin.&nbsp;

"Identical twins share the same DNA, but conversations covertly recorded between the two brothers following their arrests revealed multiple incriminating statements made by Kevin Konther, including admissions that he carried out the crimes," said the DA's office when Konther was initially convicted in February.

As per NBC News, the conviction in February stemmed from a jury finding Konther guilty of two counts of forcible rape, coupled with additional charges related to the molestation of a third victim—the 12-year-old daughter of a former girlfriend, as outlined by the prosecutor's office.

The heinous acts date back to 1995 when Konther, wielding a knife, forcibly raped a 9-year-old girl as she walked home in Lake Forest, situated southeast of Irvine in Orange County. In a horrifying incident out of the US state of Georgia, a 25-year-old Indian student identified as Vivek Saini was mercilessly beaten to death with a hammer by a homeless man whom he had reportedly been feeding and sheltering, according to local media reports citing the police.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the incident?</h2>

The attack, which took place in the United States city of Lithonia, was caught on camera where the assailant later identified as 53-year-old Julian Faulkner was seen beating Saini to death with a hammer.&nbsp;

Prior to the attack, employees at the Chevron Food Mart told police that for nearly two days, they had been allowing a homeless man to come in and out of their store.&nbsp;

One of the employees, who wished to be unidentified, told WSB-TV that Faulkner would ask for coke and chips and they would give him “everything including the water".

They added, “He asked if I could get a blanket. I said we don’t have blankets so I gave him a jacket. He was walking in and out asking him for cigarettes, water and everything.”&nbsp;

The employee also told the media outlet that the 53-year-old would sit in the store “all the time” and they never asked him to leave since it was so cold. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

However, after a couple of days, Saini, who reportedly worked part-time at the store as a clerk, on Tuesday (Jan 16), just after midnight, asked Faulkner to leave, or he would call the police. As the Indian student was preparing to leave, police said he was attacked by the 53-year-old.&nbsp;

“He hit him from the back then he kept on hitting for almost 50 times on the face on the head,” the employee told the news channel. The police found Faulkner standing over Saini’s lifeless body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Can’t even describe what I’m feeling. We were always trying to be helpful and we never expected this sort of thing would happen,” the employee told WSB-TV.

So far, the investigators have found that Faulkner reportedly beat the victim with a hammer, causing his death. Another store clerk who witnessed the attack helped the investigators by providing them with the camera footage.&nbsp;

Faulkner was arrested on the spot and remains in DeKalb County Jail. He has since been charged with felony murder and interference with government property.

Amid the ongoing investigation, it was also revealed that the officers who arrested the 53-year-old also found two knives and another hammer on him.

After the incident&nbsp;made headlines across India, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta, released a statement condemning the attack in the "strongest terms" and said it is in touch with the victim's family.&nbsp;

"We are deeply anguished by the terrifying, brutal, &amp; heinous incident that led to the death of (Indian)&nbsp;National/student Mr Vivek Saini &amp; condemns attack in the strongest terms. It is understood that the US authorities have arrested the accused &amp; are investigating the case," said the Indian&nbsp;consulate in Atlanta, in a post on X.&nbsp;

It added, "The Consulate got in touch with the family of Mr Saini immediately after the incident, provided all consular assistance in sending the mortal remains back to India, and remains in touch with the family."

The death sentence was given by Mavelikkara Additional District Judge VG Sreedevi to 15 people who were found guilty of the murder of 45-year-old BJP Other Backward Class (OBC) wing leader, Ranjith Sreenivasan.&nbsp;

All 15 are associated with the now-banned PFI.&nbsp;

Sreenivasan was said to have been brutally attacked and killed in his home in Kerala’s Alappuzha district in December 2021. The sentence comes after the prosecution&nbsp;sought a maximum sentence for the convicts, saying that they were a “trained killer squad”.&nbsp;

The sentence on Tuesday (Jan 30) came 10 days after the court found eight out of the 15 people accused in the case directly involved in the murder, while others were said to be guilty of criminal conspiracy.&nbsp;

The 15 convicted are Naisam, Ajmal, Anoop, Mohammed Aslam, Abdul Kalam alias Salam, Saffaruddin, Manshad, Jaseeb Raja, Navas, Sameer, Nazir, Abdul Kalam, Zakir Hussain, Shaji and Shernas Ashraf.

<h2>Local BJP leader’s ‘brutal’ murder</h2>

Sreenivasan was reportedly hacked to death in front of his wife, mother and minor daughter on December 19, 2021. In line with the cruel manner in which the victim was killed, the prosecution argued that it brings the case within the scope of the “rarest of the rarest” of crimes.

On January 20, the Kerala court found all 15 accused in the case guilty, with eight directly involved and four others, who showed up with deadly weapons at the scene of the crime, guilty of murder.&nbsp;

It was also their job to prevent the victim from leaving the house or letting anyone who heard the screams enter. Additionally, the court also found three others who hatched the conspiracy to kill Sreenivasan&nbsp;guilty of murder.&nbsp;

The fatal attack on Sreenivasan is regarded as an act of retaliation that took place hours after the PFI’s political wing, Social Democratic Party of India’s (SDPI) leader KS Shan was killed by a gang on December 18, 2021.&nbsp;

The trial for the Shan murder case will commence on February 2.&nbsp;
