UK elderly prisoner escapes from custody after being taken to hospital, manhunt launched

An elderly prisoner has escaped after being taken to hospital in the United Kingdom, with the Met Police launching a manhunt and asking the public for information.
In a release on Friday, Met Police saidGraham Gomm, 63, was taken to Hammersmith Hospital by prison staff on Thursday (July 18)after falling sick.Gomm was being held for burglary.
"Police were alerted at around 01:18hrs on Thursday, 18 July that Gomm had escaped," the Met Police said, adding the 63-year-old was wearing a grey t-shirt and grey tracksuit.
A manhunt is on for the Gommand the forces are examining CCTV footage.
"Officers are carrying out searches, working closely with partners, conducting CCTV enquiries and have visited a number of addresses linked to Gomm," said the Met release.
"If anyone sees Gomm they are asked not to approach him but they should call 999," it added.
BBC reported citing apolice spokesperson that there was concern about the 63-year-old's welfare, as he was undergoing medical treatment before he escaped.

UK's overcrowded prisons
The UK is dealing with a massive overpopulation of inmates in its prisons.
The government recently announced plans to release those who have served 40 per cent of their sentences for specific types of crimes.
Reports last week citing official data said there are 87,505 inmates and only 1,451 prisons or detention facilities.

This includes 83,755 men. England and Wales have the highest per capita prison population in Western Europe, according to reports.
The release of prisoners is likely to happen fromSeptember.
