World Cup: ICC disappointed over security breach during India vs Sri Lanka match

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bat against Australia in the concluding group match of the 2019 World Cup at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Reigning champions Australia have already qualified for the semi-finals, while South Africa cannot make it through to the last four.

But if Australia win they will be guaranteed to finish top of the 10-team round-robin, regardless of whether India beat Sri Lanka in Leeds in Saturday's earlier match.

Victory would see Australia remain in Manchester for an Old Trafford semi-final against fourth-placed New Zealand on Tuesday and avoid both hosts England and India -- the only team to have defeated them at the tournament so far.

Australia were unchanged from the side that thrashed New Zealand by 86 runs in a group match at Lord's last Saturday.

That meant Steve Smith and David Warner were playing against South Africa for the first time since the batsmen received 12-month bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal during a Test in Cape Town last year.

South Africa were forced into making one change to the side that beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets after veteran opener Hashim Amla was ruled out with a knee injury suffered while taking part in a warm-up game of football on Friday.

Aiden Markram was promoted to open alongside Quinton de Kock, with left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi called into the side.

The match will be the last one-day international for South Africa's JP Duminy and Imran Tahir before they retire from the format.&nbsp;

World Cup: South Africa opt to bat first against Australia

England coach Trevor Bayliss believes his side have "a point to prove" now they are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-beat-new-zealand-by-119-runs-to-reach-world-cup-semis-232875">in the semi-finals of the World Cup</a> after falling short in the last two major international tournaments.

A dramatic last-over defeat by the West Indies saw them finish runners-up in the 2016 World Twenty20 while a year later they lost at home to Pakistan in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy.

England, whose 15-man squad features seven survivors from both of those losses, are now through to their first World Cup semi-final since 1992 and will face either champions Australia or India at Edgbaston a week on Thursday.

The team has effectively been in knockout mode for their last two matches, with wins over India and New Zealand guaranteeing their place in the last four.

"You will have to ask the players but they probably think they have a point to prove," said Bayliss following England's 119-run thrashing of New Zealand.

"We have to be able to produce what we have done in the last two games in the semi-final so the fact these have been more or less quarter-finals should serve us well."

The Australian, a former coach of Sri Lanka, added: "Semi-final and final cricket is a different level again but as long as these guys (go) about their processes right in their mental approach then we give ourselves a good chance.

"All I can ask is we play good cricket because we know if we play good cricket the opposition will have to play extremely well to beat us."

England's shock 20-run loss to Sri Lanka threatened to derail their World Cup campaign and left even the usually laid-back Bayliss concerned.

"We completely went away from how we had been playing the game for the previous four years," he said.

"I thought we tried to just survive and bat for 50 overs and that kept Sri Lanka in the match.

"We were able to have a chat and regroup before two very important games and the way the players have been able to adjust after those losses has been fantastic.

"Everyone spoke, including the younger players in the group, and they were very honest about how they were feeling and what they thought they had to do to crack it."

"These last two matches we have got back to our normal approach," Bayliss said.

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan became the third batsman in the World Cup history to score more than 600 runs after India's Sachin Tendulkar and Australia's Matthew Hayden.&nbsp;

All-rounder Shakib scored his seventh half-century of the tournament, equalling Tendulkar's record of 2003, before slashing wildly at a ball from Shaheen and being caught behind for 64.&nbsp;

Pakistan, backed by thousands of passionate flag-waving fans, started curiously slowly in the London sunshine, crawling to 38-1 after 10 overs.

Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam eventually stepped on the gas, reaching their 150 partnership for the second wicket off 146 balls.

But Babar was out shortly afterwards for an impressive 96 off 98 deliveries.

Babar had batted beautifully, hitting 11 fours as he and Imam laid the foundation for a late-innings flourish.

But in another huge blow for Pakistan, Imam was next to go when he trod on his stumps after scoring exactly 100, to leave them 246-3 in the 42nd over, with Mohammad Hafeez departing in the next over.

A late flourish from Imad Wasim, who scored 43 runs from 26 balls, boosted the score but Pakistan lacked the muscle to take the game away from Bangladesh.&nbsp;

"It feels great when you do something good for the team but we have to win the match, that's the main thing," Imam said.

Imam admitted Pakistan took a realistic approach to the match, and were not aiming for 400.

"We have to be realistic and assess the conditions," he said. "They are a good side and they were bowling tight lines -- it was our plan to look for 300 or 320."

Mustafizur Rahman took five wickets for Bangladesh, including a superb caught and bowled to dismiss Shadab Khan.

Bangladesh lost Soumya Sarkar for 22 early in their reply and Tamim Iqbal was the next to go, leaving them 48-2 in the 11th over.

Pakistan were shot out for a paltry 105 in their first match, with the West Indies winning in just 13.4 overs, meaning they took a huge hit on run rate.

They won just one of their first five matches, coming back strongly to beat South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan to sit fifth in the 10-team table, but in the end left themselves too much to do.

New Zealand qualify for World Cup semis as Pakistan fail in 'miracle bid'

Dinesh Karthik insists India won't take it easy in their last World Cup group match against Sri Lanka on Saturday because the title contenders want to go into the semi-finals on a high.

Virat Kohli's side have won six of their eight group games after beating Bangladesh in their previous outing to seal a semi-final berth.

Rather than rest on their laurels, India batsman Karthik, who made his World Cup debut against Bangladesh, is adamant the team plan to fine-tune their game at Headingley this weekend.

"For all the four teams that qualify, it's going to be a massive game (the semi-finals). So that's in the back of the mind," Karthik told reporters on Friday.

"But having said that, I think we're professional enough to go out there against Sri Lanka and play a very clinical game.

"There is scope for improvement in all aspects of our game. We've been playing a good tournament until now, but I'm sure personally each player would have some box to tick."

Defending champions Australia, two-time winners India and England and New Zealand have booked their semi-final places ahead of Saturday's last group games.

India, who are second in a table currently topped by Australia, need to beat Sri Lanka to leapfrog Aaron Finch's side.

They also need help from eliminated South Africa, who would have to beat Australia later on Saturday at Old Trafford for India to end in top spot.

Karthik insisted India, who will take on either New Zealand at Old Trafford on Tuesday or England two days later, have no preference for their semi-final opponent.

'Any team can stand up'

"It's hard for me to say, obviously, which team will be a threat. But on any given day any team can stand up. And that's the beauty of a tournament like a World Cup," Karthik said.

"We're really looking forward to it as a team. At the same time, I think we have a game to play in Leeds. We'll do the best we can tomorrow."

India's middle order has faced flak for going slow in the final half of the innings in recent matches, with Karthik included in the line-up in place of underfire Kedar Jadhav for the Bangladesh game.

Karthik, a wicketkeeper-batsman who bats at number seven, said adapting to conditions is key on English wickets.

"Obviously, it depends first thing on the conditions. And also it depends a little bit on how many batsmen you have behind you," he said.

"When I go in at No. 7, I need to judge this -- assess the situation of the game and then play accordingly."

Teams have rarely been able to chase down scores of over 250 in this World Cup, but Karthik insists India are equipped to handle any possibility that comes their way.

"I think we as a team believe that we're good chasers, because that's what we do day in, day out," he said.

"And we're a team that actually has the ability to handle pressure very well. We'd back ourselves to chase and get the totals that we believe we can achieve."

We've been playing a good tournament until now, but I'm sure personally each player would have some box to tick." Defending champions Australia, two-time winners India and England and New Zealand have booked their semi-final places ahead of Saturday's last group games. 'Any team can stand up' "It's hard for me to say, obviously, which team will be a threat. But on any given day any team can stand up. And that's the beauty of a tournament like a World Cup," Karthik said. "We're really looking forward to it as a team. At the same time, I think we have a game to play in Leeds. We'll do the best we can tomorrow." India's middle order has faced flak for going slow in the final half of the innings in recent matches, with Karthik included in the line-up in place of underfire Kedar Jadhav for the Bangladesh game. Karthik, a wicketkeeper-batsman who bats at number seven, said adapting to conditions is key on English wickets. "Obviously, it depends first thing on the conditions. And also it depends a little bit on how many batsmen you have behind you," he said. "When I go in at No. 7, I need to judge this -- assess the situation of the game and then play accordingly." Teams have rarely been able to chase down scores of over 250 in this World Cup, but Karthik insists India are equipped to handle any possibility that comes their way. "I think we as a team believe that we're good chasers, because that's what we do day in, day out," he said. "And we're a team that actually has the ability to handle pressure very well. We'd back ourselves to chase and get the totals that we believe we can achieve."

India won't relax in group finale as World Cup semis loom: Dinesh Karthik

Hosts England qualified for the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-41-england-vs-new-zealand-232709">beating New Zealand by 119 runs</a> in their last group match at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.

It is the first time England have reached this stage since 1992, when they made the last of their three losing appearances in the final.&nbsp;

England, yet to win the World Cup, were set for a huge score at 194-1 off 30 overs before managing just 111 in the last 20 against a New Zealand attack missing injured fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.

But, with Jonny Bairstow making 106, a total of 305-8 proved more than enough at Chester-le-Street.

New Zealand could only manage 186 in reply as they suffered a third successive defeat of the tournament following losses to Pakistan and champions Australia -- the team that beat them in the 2015 final.

One consolation for the Black Caps is that they should still join Australia, India and England in the last four as it will take a colossal change in net run-rate for Pakistan to overtake them even if Sarfaraz Ahmed's side beat Bangladesh at Lord's on Friday.

"I am really pleased," said man-of-the-match Bairstow. "We knew these two games were must-win to give ourselves the best opportunity of reaching the semi-final.&nbsp;

"We knew the performances in the last couple of games weren't up to scratch. To play the way we have and hopefully keep it going into the semis is pleasing."

England are now guaranteed to finish third in the standings and so will play in the second semi-final at Edgbaston on July 11.

As things stand, they are in line to face India, currently second, but it is still possible for Virat Kohli's men to leapfrog Australia at the top of the standings.

If England do play India it will be a repeat of Sunday's match at the Birmingham ground when, following back-to-back defeats by Sri Lanka and Australia, they inflicted a first reverse upon Kohli's side.The opening semi-final between the first and fourth-placed sides is scheduled for Old Trafford next Tuesday.&nbsp;

New Zealand stumble

New Zealand, who would have reached the semi-finals had they won this match, saw their chase start badly when Henry Nicholls was lbw for a golden duck to Chris Woakes and decided against a review that would have reprieved him.

Martin Guptill, the leading run-scorer at the 2015 World Cup, then fell cheaply but worse followed for New Zealand when senior batsmen Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were dismissed by contrasting run-outs.

Black Caps skipper Williamson, who came into this match with a tournament average of 113.50, fell for 27 in unlucky fashion when fast bowler Mark Wood got his fingertips to a Taylor drive and deflected the ball onto the non-striker's stumps with Williamson out of his ground.

Taylor was far more responsible for his own exit when, deciding to go for a risky second run on 28, he failed to beat Adil Rashid's throw from fine leg to Buttler.

After a brief stoppage when a streaker ran onto the field, the Black Caps lost Tom Latham, caught behind for 57, to leave them all but beaten at 164-7.

Earlier, Bairstow and Jason Roy (60) got England off to a flyer with an opening partnership of 123 -- their third century stand in a row.&nbsp;

Bairstow reached his ninth one-day international hundred off 95 balls, including 14 fours and a six.

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl yorkers at will has been a key factor in his team's progress to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals and the right-arm pacer attributes it to the long hours he spent honing the skill.

Bumrah sealed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-india-beat-bangladesh-by-28-runs-to-make-semis-232562">India's 28-run victory against Bangladesh</a> on Tuesday with two trademark yorkers to claim the last two wickets in successive deliveries and finish with figures of 4-55.

The right-arm quick's accuracy and death-overs mastery make him a limited overs asset and the 25-year-old attributed his skill to his work in the nets.

"Whenever I practise in the nets, I practise each and every situation - be it with the new ball, be it with the old ball, or death bowling at the death," the bowler with an unusual action told reporters.

"I tick all the boxes in the nets. In the match, it's all about execution and keeping a clear head.&nbsp;

"All of that preparation helps me in the matches. If the work ethic is good, then execution becomes much easier."

Bumrah has used the yorker delivery to good effect in the tournament to claim 14 wickets from seven matches with an impressive economy rate of 4.6.

His unique release point and accuracy render him nearly unplayable at times and difficult to score off otherwise.

NET PRACTICE

Bumrah, who likes to simulate match situations in the nets, said he did not consider himself a master of the delivery.

"I do it again and again and again in the nets. The more you do it, you get decent at it.

"You can't master it but you still try to get better at it. It's all about repetition. It's like the length ball - you have to do it again and again (in the nets) and try and replicate it in the game."

Another aspect of his bowling is to control his aggression according to the requirement of the team, he said.

"I try to keep things simple. Reading and analysing the wicket as soon as possible is important. Sometimes you run after wickets, but I focus on team goals -- what the team wants me to do right now.&nbsp;

"Not chasing success, I want to focus on my process. If I do that, eventually everything gets sorted out."

Qualifying for the semi-finals with a match to spare affords India the luxury of resting their strike bowler for Saturday's group clash with Sri Lanka but Bumrah does not want to put his feet up.

"This is my first World Cup so I'd like to play as many games as possible... The more matches you play, the more you enjoy."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-40-india-vs-bangladesh-232302">India beat Bangladesh by 28 runs</a> on Tuesday to qualify for the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup and eliminate their neighbours in the process.

Rohit Sharma smashed his fourth century of this year's tournament and featured in a massive 180-run opening partnership with KL Rahul to help India to a commanding 314-9.

Shakib Al Hasan struck a defiant 66 but the lack of partnerships hurt Bangladesh, who were all out for 286 in 48 overs with Bumrah (4-55) sealing the victory by claiming two wickets with the final two deliveries.

India are now second with 13 points, one behind leaders Australia, while Bangladesh are seventh with seven points.

"Bangladesh played some really good cricket and deserve credit for the fight they put up," said India captain Virat Kohli. "We had to work hard for the win and we're happy to see a Q (qualified) in front of our name now."

Earlier, Rohit combined with Rahul (77) for the highest opening partnership at this year's tournament to give India a strong foundation after they elected to bat.

Things could have been vastly different though had Tamim Iqbal not spilled Rohit, then on nine, at midwicket off Mustafizur Rahman who went on to return 5-59.

Rohit capitalised on the reprieve to smash a 92-ball 104, equalling Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara's record of four hundreds in a single World Cup, which earned him the man-of-the-match.

The opener clobbered five of the seven sixes in the Indian innings, besides seven fours, and overtook Australian David Warner as the leading scorer at this tournament.

Soumya Sarkar ended the ominous-looking partnership in the 30th over when Rohit mistimed his drive.

Rahul joined him in the pavilion after bringing up his second half-century of this tournament.

Kohli made 26, his first sub-50 score in his last six innings, and India's middle order again struggled to get going.

Rishabh Pant, who made 48 off 41 balls, scored freely but India could not really capitalise on the fine start.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni made 35 but once again failed to launch a late assault which could have taken India past the 350-mark which had looked well within their reach at one stage.

India played two wicketkeepers -- Pant and Dinesh Karthik -- as specialist batsmen to beef up their misfiring middle order but the woes persisted.

A strong start was imperative to chase down a 300-plus target and Bangladesh were understandably cautious as they embarked on trying to repeat their upset victory against India at the 2007 World Cup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, returning from a hamstring injury, and Bumrah kept it tight up front but Mohammed Shami drew the first blood for India by dismissing Tamim for 22.

Fellow opener Soumya Sarkar could not convert the start he got into a big innings either, hitting Hardik Pandya straight to Kohli at short extra cover to depart for 33.

Shakib brought up his sixth 50-plus score at the tournament but wickets kept tumbling at the other end.

Mohammad Saifuddin (51 not out) and Sabbir Rahman (36) forged the only 50-plus partnership in the Bangladesh innings but they never really threatened to pull off a difficult chase.

"It was a good effort - Mustafizur bowled well - but if one of the batsmen could have got to 80 or 90 it might have been different," Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said.

"We were asking too much in the end. A bit of luck didn't go our way either."

Indian middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu has announced retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday. Rayudu has written to&nbsp;The Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI).&nbsp;

The decision came after he was snubbed for the Cricket World Cup 2019, which is underway in England and Wales.&nbsp;

He was not named in India's 15 member squad as all-rounder Vijay Shankar got the opportunity to play for Team India.&nbsp;

India made two replacements during the tournament as Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar were ruled out due to injury but still, Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal's names were preferred over Rayudu.

Defending champions United States reached the women's World Cup final for the fifth time after an incident-packed 2-1 win over England, who missed a late penalty, on Tuesday.

In a tournament that has earned unprecedented attention, the much-anticipated game certainly delivered with an abundance of excitement and relentless effort, topped by moments of wonderful skill.

It was business as usual for the three-times World Cup winners but for England there was agony as skipper Steph Houghton missed an 84th-minute penalty that could have pushed the game into extra time.

After a powerful start from the Americans, Christen Press, replacing the absent Megan Rapinoe, opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a fine header but the Lionesses fought back, levelling nine minutes later with Ellen White's sixth goal of the tournament.

The US&nbsp;restored their advantage in the 31st minute through Alex Morgan's header from Lindsey Horan's perfectly floated ball -- a goal which Morgan, on her 30th birthday, celebrated with a mocking 'sip of tea' gesture.

England thought they had levelled in the 69th minute, through another excellent White finish, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR video review.

VAR did provide England with a lifeline though, a penalty awarded for a foul on White, but Houghton's soft spot kick was saved by Alyssa Naeher.

England had defender Millie Bright sent off for a second booking three minutes from the end.

The drama on a remarkable night began before the game when the team-sheets showed that Rapinoe, who had scored four goals in the last two games, had been left on the bench, most likely with an injury although the absence was not explained by US&nbsp;team officials.

There was an unwelcome surprise for England too with goalkeeper Karen Bardsley missing out with a hamstring injury and Carly Telford drafted in.

As so often, the Americans were fast out of the traps and launched a wave of early attacks and high pressing which England's defence struggled to cope with.

Telford was called into early action to parry a fierce shot from Rose Lavelle after the midfielder had slipped the ball through the legs of Bright and, luckily for the Lionesses, Morgan blasted the loose ball over the bar.

The early lead the defending champions had threatened came in the 10th minute when Kelley O'Hara whipped in a cross from the right and Press lost her marker Lucy Bronze and headed firmly past Telford.

With the US&nbsp;fully exploiting the space they were given in midfield, England were in danger of letting the game slip out of their control but against the run of play they levelled in superb style.

Keira Walsh's sweeping cross-field pass found Beth Mead on the left and her ball inside was met first time by White, who lifted a side-foot shot in off the far post.

The Lionesses were back in the game but they soon needed Telford again to keep out a fierce snap-shot from the excellent Lavelle.

But the quality of the Americans in the final third was displayed in perfect fashion when Press collected a ball from deep on the left flank and fed Horan, whose delightful lofted pass was met by Morgan with a pinpoint header that flashed past Telford.

Walsh forced Naeher into a full-stretch save with a powerful strike from 20 metres out but England needed the tactical adjustments that coach Phil Neville made at the break.

The improved approach looked to have paid dividends when Jill Scott's defence-splitting through ball was slotted home by White but to the agony of the Lionesses the VAR signal was made and the review showed the England striker offside by the tightest of margins.

The next time the signal was made for review, it was after White went down in the area under challenge from Becky Sauerbrunn and after some delay the Brazilian referee pointed to the spot.

But Houghton, so dependable in so many ways for England, let the nerves get to her and a soft kick was easily saved by Naeher.

It was the killer blow for England and a major let-off for the Americans. When Bright was dismissed any chance of a late upset went with her.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma broke MS Dhoni's record of hitting most One-Day International sixes by an Indian player&nbsp;in Tuesday's league match of Cricket World Cup 2019 against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

Rohit hit five giant sixes in his 104-run knock at Edgbaston and took his tally to 230 to set the record of hitting most ODI sixes by an Indian batsman in ODI format.&nbsp;

Rohit also became the first Indian batsman to hit four centuries in World Cup tournament.&nbsp;

Overall, he is the second player to hit four tons in a World Cup edition as previously, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara had achieved this feat in the World Cup 2015.&nbsp;

In the match against Bangladesh, India opted to bat first post winning the toss. Sharma survived an early scare to take control against the bowlers.

Sharma, who was dropped on nine by Tamim Iqbal at deep mid-wicket, reached his second successive ton with a single off Shakib Al Hasan, celebrating by flipping his bat in the air.

But he was caught at extra cover by Liton Das off the bowling of Soumya Sarkar for 104, ending a 180-run opening stand -- the best for the first wicket in this World Cup -- with KL Rahul.&nbsp;

India vs Bangladesh: 15 years after ODI debut, Dinesh Karthik named in World Cup Playing XI

Australia paceman Pat Cummins has fired a warning at the nation's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">Cricket World Cup</a> rivals, saying the champions may have "clicked" but are yet to put in a complete performance at the global showpiece.

Aaron Finch's Australia booked their place in the semi-finals early with a comprehensive win over England and carried on the form with another convincing victory over New Zealand at Lord's on Saturday.

A relaxed Australia will head into their final round-robin match against already-eliminated South Africa in Manchester on Saturday with the benefit of a week's rest before bigger tests await.

"I think just everything's clicked, the batting, the bowling, our game plan is the way we've wanted to play," Cummins told reporters.

"Even just everyone being comfortable in their roles and comfortable around each other. I think it takes time but everyone's in a really good place.

"The thing we have spoken about, we have managed to scrape home wins without really putting through a complete performance," Cummins added.

"With each game, we have got a little bit better."

Led by pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, Australia's quicks have bowled superbly throughout the tournament but have gone up a level in recent matches, skittling England's vaunted batting lineup for 221 before routing New Zealand for 157.

Jason Behrendorff's promotion to open the bowling with Starc, with Cummins switched to first change bowler, has been key to the improvement.

Cummins has only nabbed one wicket from the last two matches but has proved highly effective at keeping the batsmen pinned down during the middle overs.

He captured veteran Ross Taylor's wicket and conceded a miserly 14 runs from his six overs' work against New Zealand.

"I think it's a massive change," he said of the shift from new ball to first change bowler. "I think it's a lot different to say red ball cricket where the ball kind of stays hard and there might be some swing on offer.

"I think it's kind of outside of those first eight to 10 overs, there is no swing, the ball is not as hard, normally the batters are set.

"Jason and Starcy have been brilliant up front. My role is to just try and hold them a little bit and hopefully they take a risk. It (feels) like I have done that job pretty well."

The match against South Africa will be a dead rubber but also the first that opener David Warner and former skipper Steve Smith have had against Faf du Plessis's side since they were suspended for ball-tampering during the Cape Town test in March, 2018.

Warner and Smith, whose one-year ban expired at the end of March, have been jeered at stadiums throughout the tournament but have not let it affect them, with the former leading the tournament's runs list with 516 and the latter chipping in 287.

Cummins did not feel the ball-tampering history would add much significance to the Proteas game.

"I know Dave and Smithy have played quite a bit with (South Africa's players) in IPL and played heaps of times before so I wouldn't have thought so," he said.

Australia paceman Pat Cummins has fired a warning at the nation's Cricket World Cup rivals, saying the champions may have "clicked" but are yet to put in a complete performance at the global showpiece.

Australia paceman Pat Cummins has fired a warning at the nation's Cricket World Cup rivals, saying the champions may have "clicked" but are yet to put in a complete performance at the global showpiece. "With each game, we have got a little bit better." Led by pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, Australia's quicks have bowled superbly throughout the tournament but have gone up a level in recent matches, skittling England's vaunted batting lineup for 221 before routing New Zealand for 157. It (feels) like I have done that job pretty well." The match against South Africa will be a dead rubber but also the first that opener David Warner and former skipper Steve Smith have had against Faf du Plessis's side since they were suspended for ball-tampering during the Cape Town test in March, 2018.

The&nbsp;International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed&nbsp;Mayank Agarwal's name as&nbsp;a replacement&nbsp;for all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who has been ruled out due to injury.&nbsp;

Twitterati not pleased on Mayank Agarwal's choice over Ambati Rayudu as Vijay Shankar's replacement

India will persist with Rishabh Pant at number four in the batting order to avail the left-right advantage in the middle overs, assistant coach Sanjay Bangar said ahead of Tuesday's Cricket World Cup group match against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

The twice champions were left without a left-hander in the top half of their batting order after a fractured finger ended opened Shikhar Dhawan's World Cup.&nbsp;

Pant was flown in as Dhawan's replacement and the 21-year-old finally made his debut in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-england-end-indias-unbeaten-run-to-revive-semis-hopes-231858">Sunday's loss to England</a>, scoring 32 after some nervous running between the wickets early in his knock.&nbsp;

"I felt he had a decent innings," Bangar told reporters at Edgbaston. "He got 32 and played a couple of god shots, got a partnership going (with Hardik Pandya), so we're going to persist with him."&nbsp;

All-rounder Vijay Shankar, who was originally picked in the squad to bat at number four, has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing World Cup with a toe injury, the team said on Monday.&nbsp;

"The team management was feeling the absence of a left-hander since Shikhar got injured," Bangar said, explaining the decision to send Pant ahead of Pandya on Sunday.&nbsp;

"It was a ploy to use a right-left combination in the middle overs to upset the bowling plans. I feel because of that Adil Rashid could not bowl the number of overs he'd have usually bowled."

Known for his six-hitting prowess, Pant hit a century in an Oval test last year and also smashed an unbeaten 159 against Australia in Sydney in January.

Sunday's match was only his sixth one-day international but Bangar said the time Pant spent with the World Cup squad has prepared him for the challenges ahead.

"He's spent close to two weeks with us now. He has done well at the international level, especially in the test format. The one-day format is slightly newer to him," said Bangar, who played 12 tests and 15 ODIs for India.

"We're trying to help him with the various mindsets and the roles that come with the middle order job, and the importance of the right-left combination... so straightaway he can put the pressure back on the spinners.

"It can help the team in a big way. On those lines, we've been communicating with him."

India, second in the table with 11 points, need a victory in their final two group matches to qualify for the semi-finals.

World Cup: Former Pakistani cricketer Waqar Younis targets 'sportsmanship' in India vs England match

India's winning streak in the Cricket World Cup 2019 came to an end after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-england-end-indias-unbeaten-run-to-revive-semis-hopes-231858">England defeated the Virat Kohli-led side by 31 runs</a> in Sunday's group match&nbsp;at Edgbaston.&nbsp;

Despite Rohit Sharma's century and Virat Kohli's 66, India failed to chase down the 338-run target.&nbsp;

Debutant Rishabh Pant, who looked nervous in the start, came in to bat at number fourth spot in the absence of Vijay Shankar and scored 32 runs off 29 balls.&nbsp;

During the post-match interview, Rohit was asked, whether he was surprised to see Pant ahead of the in-form Hardik Pandya.&nbsp;

Rohit's gave a hilarious reply, saying, "Not really (surprised) because you all wanted Rishabh Pant to play right? Right from the time we left India, you all kept on asking where is Rishabh Pant. There he is at No.4."

India received another major blow as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/major-takeaways-from-indias-historic-world-cup-win-over-pakistan-in-manchester-227794#vijay-shankar-joins-elite-list-227793">all-rounder Vijay Shankar</a> has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup 2019 owing&nbsp;to a toe injury.&nbsp;

Shankar had suffered the injury when Jasprit Bumrah's ball hit him during a net session. It&nbsp;had not looked very serious but it looks to have been aggravated.

India have requested governing body International Cricket Council to approve Mayank Agarwal as Shankar's replacement.

"Vijay Shankar sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe, which will require a minimum of three weeks to heal," the team said in a statement.

"The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup.

"The Indian team management has requested the ICC to consider Mayank Agarwal as his replacement."

Originally picked to play at the number four batting spot, Shankar has managed scores of 15 not out, 29 and 14 in his three matches in the tournament.&nbsp;

In India's group match against England on Sunday, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant had replaced Shankar and made his World Cup debut.&nbsp;

Pant flew in to join the squad two weeks ago as a replacement for India's first choice opener Shikhar Dhawan after he fractured his hand.&nbsp;

"Vijay Shankar has a toe niggle, Rishabh Pant is in. He brings in a lot of fearlessness. Once he gets to 20, then he's unstoppable," Kohli had said.&nbsp;

In India's group match against Pakistan, Vijay Shankar had impressed with his bowling talent when on his first ball, he had opener Imam-ul-Haq lbw for seven.&nbsp;

World Cup: India's Vijay Shankar ruled out of tournament due to toe injury

Former Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar said that for the first time since Indo-Pak Partition, his country supported India in Sunday's World Cup group match against England at Edgbaston.&nbsp;

Eoin Morgan-led England reignited their World Cup campaign after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-england-end-indias-unbeaten-run-to-revive-semis-hopes-231858">defeating India 31 runs</a> and they toppled Pakistan to regain their fourth position in the points table.&nbsp;

The result of the match had the potential of changing other teams' fortune in the World Cup as Bangladesh and Pakistan are also bidding to enter the semi-finals.&nbsp;

"India had five wickets in hands, so I thought they will take chances but they did not. I think India played very slow there. Anyways, it was our desire as Pakistanis and we were supporting India for the first time since partition, but India were unable to win and whosoever had performed from the Indian side, he would have become our hero as well," Akhtar said in a YouTube video.&nbsp;

Indian skipper Virat Kohli too expressed his thoughts on the support Team India is getting from Pakistan during the&nbsp;England clash. &nbsp;

Kohli said, "To be honest I haven't seen what's been happening outside. But I do believe the Pakistani fans will be supporting us, which is a rare thing (smiles)."&nbsp;

Opting to bat first, England posted a commanding total of 337 which they defended easily to secure a much-needed victory.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma (102) scored a brilliant century and Kohli scored 66 which was not enough for the Indian side to chase the target.

India's middle order yet again came under immense criticism following their defeat. MS Dhoni was again criticised for his slow-paced inning as he scored 42 runs off 31 deliveries.&nbsp;

Although his strike rate was above hundred, it was not enough to help India chase the mammoth target set by the hosts.&nbsp;

Akhtar also opined that India's middle order is a concern for the team.

"Now India will have to think about their middle order as they are getting exposed again and again. They are unable to score there and it will be a worrying point for India in the coming days," he said.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/new-zealands-trent-boult-takes-world-cup-hat-trick-against-australia-231583">Trent Boult became the first New Zealand bowler to claim a hat-trick</a> in the World Cup but it could not stop champions Australia still cruising to an 86-run victory in Saturday's rematch of the 2015 final between the trans-Tasman rivals at Lord's.

Boult dismissed Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff in successive deliveries but Australia, who had been reeling at 92-5 in the 22nd over, managed to post a competitive 243-9 after electing to bat.

It turned out that each of Boult's three hat-trick victims played significant part in Australia's victory.

Khawaja (88), who was dropped at slip before he could open his account, and Alex Carey (71) had combined to arrest their slide before Bolt (4-51) wrecked their lower order.

Behrendorff then dealt early blows before Starc spearheaded New Zealand's rout, claiming 5-26 as the Kiwis were shot out for 157 in the 44th over with not one of their players managing a half-century.

Australia, who had already secured a place in the semi-finals, remain on top with 14 points from eight matches, three points ahead of India who have played six.

New Zealand remain third with 11 points from eight matches.

Earlier, Aaron Finch's decision to bat first appeared to backfire as Boult dismissed the in-form Australia captain in the fifth over.

The champions lost four more wickets before reaching 100 but it could easily have been worse if Martin Guptill had not spilled Khawaja in the slips when the batsman was yet to open his account.

Carey and Khawaja then rebuilt the Australian innings with a sixth-wicket stand of 107, which Kane Williamson broke when he had Carey caught at cover.

Boult claimed the tournament's second hat-trick, after India's Mohammed Shami achieved the feat against Afghanistan, but Australia put enough on board for their bowlers.

The Australians bowled with lot of purpose and Behrendorff denied New Zealand a strong start, dismissing both the openers, Henry Nicholls and Guptill, cheaply.

Key batsman Williamson and Ross Taylor (30) tried to steady the innings but the wheels came off their innings after the Kiwi captain's attempt to play his trademark dab shot resulted in his dismissal for 40.

Starc then mowed down the New Zealand lower order to consolidate his position as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 24 victims.
