Twitter users have a field day after Indian cricket team suffered a dramatic collapse against New Zealand in the first semi-final of Cricket World Cup 2019 at Manchester's Old Trafford on Wednesday. New Zealand put up a modest target of 240 after opting to bat first in a game that was pushed to the reserve day as it was halted on Tuesday due to rains. Chasing the target, India lost three crucial wickets in the first five overs as key batsmen Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul all depart for one run each. Soon after that, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant also lost their wickets. New Zealand pacemen Trent Boult and Matt Henry displayed a brilliant bowling show. Henry took three wickets and Boult got one wicket. Spinner Mitchell Santner struck twice and dismissed Hardik Pandya and Pant. India are struggling in the match at this moment but Twitter users have flooded the social forums with some hilarious posts. Here are some of them! World Cup: Epic Twitter reactions after India's dramatic collapse in semi-final against New Zealand

Brothers Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor were in Manchester to watch the first semi-final of cricket world cup where India took on New Zealand. While the match got disrupted due to rain, the Kapoor brothers seem to have lived it up and made most of their time there.

The two actors even caught up with legendary cricket Kapil Dev during the match. Sanjay Kapoor shared a photo of the trio on his Instagram and wrote, "With the legend Kapil Dev, I can’t stop grinning #1983worldcup #captain #greatestallrounder #fanmoment(sic)"

World Cup: Old Trafford becomes 'no fly zone' for India vs New Zealand semi-final clash

Australia's World Cup defence suffered a blow on Sunday after batsman Usman Khawaja was ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury ahead of Thursday's semi-final against England.

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis, nursing a side strain, is also doubtful, head coach Justin Langer said.

"Ussie's got a hamstring strain so he'll be out for probably three to four weeks, which is a real shame, but we have to work hard on getting him up for the Ashes now," Langer said.

Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh have been drafted in as cover for the injured duo.

"Not in the final XI yet but Matthew Wade is coming up. He's in great form, he's had a great 12 or so months back home, but he's also just scored two hundreds in one-day cricket so he's in great nick," Langer added. "And Mitch Marsh is going to come on standby for Stoinis."

Batting at number three, Khawaja scored a couple of 80s in his last four innings at the World Cup before retiring hurt in Saturday's loss to South Africa. He did return to bat later in the innings but was clearly in pain.

Langer hoped the left-hander would be fit for the first Ashes test against England at Edgbaston from August 1.

"And Mitch Marsh is going to come on standby for Stoinis." Batting at number three, Khawaja scored a couple of 80s in his last four innings at the World Cup before retiring hurt in Saturday's loss to South Africa. He did return to bat later in the innings but was clearly in pain. Langer hoped the left-hander would be fit for the first Ashes test against England at Edgbaston from August 1. "Conservatively it'll be three or four weeks, and with all the help and the rehab he'll get hopefully he'll be right for the practice game or certainly the first test." Stoinis bowled only three overs at Old Trafford on Saturday. "Marcus is the same, got another strain in his other side actually, so we are working through that at the moment and we'll have to make a decision on him in the next 24 to 48 hours," Langer said.
New Zealand have the capacity to upset Cricket World Cup favourites India in Tuesday's semi-final if they can make an explosive start to the match, according to former captain Daniel Vettori.

After making a fast start to the tournament, the Black Caps lost their last three round-robin games and qualified for the semi-finals in fourth place to set up a clash with the top-ranked Indians in Manchester.

They are heavy underdogs to get to their second successive final but Vettori said anything was possible if New Zealand hit the ground running.

"A three-match losing streak can evaporate pretty quickly with a great 10 overs at the start," Vettori wrote in his International Cricket Council column.

"If New Zealand get off to a great start, with bat or ball, the streak will soon be forgotten."

Vettori said that out-of-form opening batsman Martin Guptill, who has scored just 166 runs in eight innings, was key to that game plan on the batting side.

"He has done it before so many times, and knowing him as I do, I am sure he can turn it around again and very quickly it will become a different story," he added.

"Don't forget he actually started this tournament pretty well with an unbeaten half-century against Sri Lanka, so he doesn't have to look back all that far for proof of what he can still do at this level."

Attacking in the opening 10 overs with the ball was also paramount, he wrote, even if India were the best side at assessing conditions and adjusting their batting accordingly.

"They will have to be aggressive right from the outset and bowl to take wickets. If you take early wickets and can get at that Indian middle-order then you have a chance.

Our aim and our focus is on winning." Watch the entire interview: × MS Dhoni is highly unlikely to feature in the next edition of the 50-over World Cup as the wicketkeeper-batsman turned 38 on Sunday. Kohli sidestepped questions on a possible send-off for the former captain as he praised the veteran's contribution to Indian cricket. "I am certainly not going to write anything down," Kohli said in response to the potential for Dhoni to say farewell. "I am sure everyone, if you ask them about him, they have special things to say. Especially those who started their careers under him. "When a person has done so much for the team, you have to appreciate and acknowledge what he has done for Indian cricket and how he has handled Indian cricket and taken respect for Indian cricket so high all over the world."

World Cup: 'Decision making will be crucial,' says Virat Kohli ahead of semis

Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori praised Indian paceman Jasprit Bumrah ahead of India's semi-final clash of Cricket World Cup 2019 against New Zealand on July 9.

The league stage of the tournament is over and top-ranked India will face fourth-placed New Zealand in the semi-final while defending champion Australia will lock horns with hosts England.

In his column for the International Cricket Council (ICC), Vettori wrote, "Jasprit Bumrah is basically unplayable at this stage, and against England, he was his usual economical self."

"But despite that, England targeted everyone else. They were aggressive against the spinners, against Hardik Pandya and they even got to Mohammed Shami at the death as well."

"I am fairly confident Shami will come back into the side to face New Zealand, he had a very good series down there at the start of the year.

"But New Zealand have got all the ingredients in place to put on a big total. I know they haven't done it yet," he added.

"They will have to be aggressive right from the outset and bowl to take wickets. If you take early wickets and can get at that Indian middle order then you have a chance," said Vettori.

"The key will be Trent Boult, he knows these Indian batsmen extremely well at this point. They have played each other many times in international cricket and the IPL and he, along with Kane and the coaching staff, will have plans in place."

After getting a terrific start in the tournament, New Zealand suffered three back-to-back defeats to Pakistan, Australia and England in the league stage.

However, Vettori believes that the three-match losing streak can evaporate quickly if New Zealand manage to perform well in the first 10 overs.

"They have to stay aggressive, bowl to get wickets and let Trent work his magic at the start, in the middle and at the death where his reverse swing, yorkers and now a knuckle ball as well, mark him out as one of the world's premier white-ball bowlers," he added.

Wishes pour in as Indian cricketer MS Dhoni turns 38

Australia will play England in the World Cup semi-finals after the holders suffered a dramatic 10-run defeat against South Africa at Old Trafford on Saturday.

David Warner marked his first match against South Africa since a 12-month ball-tampering ban with his third hundred of the World Cup, but it was not enough to prevent Australia suffering their second loss of the 10-team group stage.

Defeat on the penultimate ball meant Australia, who had already qualified for the semi-finals, failed to clinch top spot as India leapfrogged them to take pole position after beating Sri Lanka earlier on Saturday.

Had Australia won, they would have faced fourth-placed New Zealand in the first semi-final at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

But instead they will play resurgent hosts England in the second semi-final at Edgbaston on Thursday.

The final is at Lord's a week on Sunday.

Warner (122) and Alex Carey (85) got Australia to within sight of a stiff target of 326 during a fifth-wicket partnership of 108.

But neither could see their side home to victory after South Africa captain Faf du Plessis made 100 and Rassie van der Dussen a career-best 95 in a total of 325-6.

Australia were struggling at 119 for four and Warner could only watch as wickets fell early against a Proteas side whose own semi-final hopes had long since disappeared.

Australia captain Aaron Finch, Warner's opening partner, went for three, when he chipped Imran Tahir to short cover, sparking a typically exuberant celebration from the bowler.

Steve Smith, who like Warner was given a 12-month ban for his part in the ball-tampering scandal during a Test in Cape Town last year, fell lbw for seven to Dwaine Pretorius.

Nail-biting

Warner held firm, going past 600 runs for the tournament, with his latest century coming up in 100 balls when he edged Chris Morris for his 12th four.

He was eventually out when a drive off Dwaine Pretorius was well caught by a diving Morris at mid-on.

Carey, however, launched Tahir for six during his career-best ODI knock before his 69-ball innings ended when he carved Morris to Aiden Markram at deep cover to leave Australia 275-7 in the 46th over.

Usman Khawaja returned after retiring hurt earlier in the innings and helped get the target down to 25 off 12 balls before he was bowled for 18, walking across his stumps, by Kagiso Rabada.

The target eventually became 18 off a nail-biting last over -- bowled by Andile Phehlukwayo -- with one wicket standing.

And with 11 needed off two balls, last man Nathan Lyon holed out to Markram in the deep.

Earlier, Mitchell Starc equalled Australia legend Glenn McGrath's World Cup tournament record of 26 wickets, set at the 2007 event in the Caribbean, with a return of 2-59.

Markram (33), opening after South Africa veteran Hashim Amla was ruled out with a knee injury playing football in a warm-up on Friday, and Quinton de Kock (52) set the tone in front of a sun-drenched crowd in a first-wicket stand of 79.

Du Plessis, who drove fast bowler Pat Cummins for a superb six, completed the first hundred by a South African at this World Cup in 93 balls.

But he was out to the next ball he faced, slicing Jason Behrendorff to third man.

Van der Dussen fell short of his maiden ODI hundred when, trying to hit the last ball of the innings for six, he holed out off Cummins.

Cricket World Cup: It's India vs New Zealand and Australia vs England in semis

Rohit Sharma became the first player to make five centuries in a single World Cup match and his opening partner KL Rahul also struck a fluent century as India crushed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in their final group match at Headingley on Saturday.

India had already qualified for the last four and will finish top of the standings if Australia lose to South Africa in their last group match.

Sri Lanka, who failed to reach the semi-finals, slumped to 55-4 in the 12th over before Angelo Mathews smashed his first century in nearly two years to help them to a respectable 264-7.

Rohit and Rahul made a mincemeat of the Sri Lankan attack to add 189 runs, the highest opening stand at this World Cup, which effectively settled the match.

Captain Virat Kohli made 34 not out as India romped home with 39 balls to spare for their seventh win in nine matches.

"We wanted to play good cricket but we didn't expect this kind of scoreline heading into the semis," Kohli said, referring to India's 7-1 win-loss record in the group stage.

If India top the standings they will play New Zealand in the semi-finals and if they finish second they will face hosts England.

"For us the opposition never matters...if we don't play well anyone can beat us," Kohli said. "If we play well we can beat anyone. The focus has to be within."

Sri Lanka pace spearhead Lasith Malinga completed figures of 1-82 in his final World Cup match.

Earlier, Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat in a rematch of the 2011 final between the neighbours.

Jasprit Bumrah rocked the islanders early with a two-wicket burst and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was busy behind the stumps as Sri Lanka lost their top four batsmen soon after crossing the 50-mark.

The focus has to be within." Sri Lanka pace spearhead Lasith Malinga completed figures of 1-82 in his final World Cup match. Both Karunaratne and Kusal Perera fell caught behind off Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja did not have to wait for success in his first match at this year's World Cup. The left-arm spinner lured Kusal Mendis out of the crease for Dhoni, who was involved in each of the first four dismissals, to effect a simple stumping.
Australia captain Aaron Finch says it will be up to Glenn Maxwell whether he plays in Saturday's Cricket World Cup clash with South Africa after the all-rounder was struck on the forearm during a horror net session for the side.

Shaun Marsh was put out of the tournament on Thursday by a short delivery from teammate Pat Cummins which hit him on the wrist, and shortly afterwards Maxwell was sent to hospital by a blow from seamer Mitchell Starc.

"He (Maxwell) seems pretty good. He said he's been able to hold the bat no problem, it will just be a case of how he feels," Finch told reporters.

"At the end of the day, I think we will leave that call up to him, if he feels confident enough to get out there and do the job.

"All in all, he's a lot better than Shaun, obviously."

Finch says the team have rallied around to support Marsh, who has been replaced in the squad by batsman Peter Handscomb.

He was unfortunate to miss out on the World Cup after hitting a purple patch of form in the lead-up to the tournament.

"Shaun was obviously very disappointed. He is still in surgery at the moment, so we just wish him a speedy recovery. I think it hit the boys pretty hard," Finch said.

If Maxwell is not fit to face South Africa, Handscomb is likely to be drafted straight into the team.

"He will be 100 per cent ready to go," Finch said. "He was really stiff to miss out in the first place on the World Cup squad and every opportunity he's had recently with bat in hand, in the field, he's nailed."

Victory for Australia would mean they topped the table and set up a semi-final against New Zealand, avoiding two of the pre-tournament favourites in India and England.

It is a stunning reversal in fortunes for a side who had lost 20 of their previous 24 one-day international matches up to March this year.

"I think what's changed for us is our ability to win the key moments in games," Finch said. "The ability for somebody under any circumstances to put their hand up and play a key role to help win a game for Australia.

"That's not saying that wasn't happening. It was probably just guys would get the team into a position to win a game and then we wouldn't grab that key opportunity.

"So I think for me it's been about having a bit more experience around the group and guys who have been in World Cups, in tight series, in high-pressure environments, where they have got the job done before."
