After signing former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis as a marquee player for their Johannesburg franchise in Cricket South Africa (CSA)'s new T20 league, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly looking to rope in the legendary MS Dhoni as a mentor for the team.

The owners of the four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions have bought the Johannesburg team in the CSA T20 league. The T20 tournament which is all set to get underway next year is yet to be officially named by the South African Cricket Board. All six franchises that will take part in the competition are owned by IPL team owners.

Dhoni could return in a mentor's role for the second time, but this time not in India. As per a report in Insidesport, the legendary wicket-keeper batter, who still leads CSK in IPL, can be roped in as a mentor by the team management for their sister franchise in CSA's T20 league. The CSK management is also keen on having Stephen Fleming as head coach of their Johannesburg franchise.

While Dhoni captains CSK in IPL, Fleming is the head coach of the four-time champions. The coach-captain duo have been instrumental in the franchise's success in IPL and have won four trophies together. However, Dhoni will need permission from BCCI to take up the mentor's role for the team in an overseas league.

“You will know the official name by this week. We are currently in talks with Stephen as we can’t think of any better person carrying forward the CSK legacy in a new venture. Dhoni’s involvement will depend on BCCI’s clearance. He won’t be playing but could be in some role if BCCI permits," a CSK official was quoted as saying by Insidesport.

One of the greatest captains of all time, Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but continues to play in the Indian Premier League. The 41-year-old had led CSK to a memorable title triumph in IPL 2021 and gave up captaincy ahead of the start of IPL 2022 this year to hand over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja.

However, he was reappointed as the CSK skipper midway through the season after the team's disastrous start to their campaign. CSK still failed to make it to the playoffs and finished a lowly 7th in what was a disappointing season for the defending champions.

CSK likely to rope in MS Dhoni as mentor, Stephen Fleming as head coach of CSA T20 league franchise - Report

Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam is currently enjoying a purple patch with the willow in international cricket. Babar has been a force to reckon with for Pakistan across all three formats and has been among the most consistent run-getters for the team and despite the team's crammed schedule, remains unfazed by the increased workload.

Babar had a cheeky response to a reporter's query about his workload during Pakistan's pre-departure press conference ahead of their upcoming series against the Netherlands. Pakistan will play a three-match ODI series in the Netherlands followed by the Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE later this year.

During the presser, a reporter queried Babar if he felt some players should focus only on playing two formats considering the amount of cricket being played by Pakistan lately. Babar had a tongue-in-cheek response to the reporter and asked him if he felt the Pakistan skipper has become old.

"Don't you think the players were depressed, the workload was more? So won't it be a good idea if you people play only two formats," the reporter asked Babar.

"It depends on your fitness. I don't think we should limit ourselves to two formats. Do you think I have become old," Babar responded. The journalist was quick to argue that the workload is more compared to what it was before. "The workload is much more," he told the Pakistan skipper.

"I don't think so. If the load is more, then we will improve our fitness levels," Babar gave a firm reply.

Several former cricketers and experts have recently raised questions over the packed schedule of international teams arguing that it has made it difficult for players to play all three formats of the game. However, as far as Pakistan are concerned, they have only played 12 international matches so far in 2022.

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee has heaped praise on Virender Sehwag calling him one of the toughest batters he has bowled to. Lee recently recalled his fierce battles with Sehwag and said the former Indian opener was just too good with the bat. Sehwag was known for his swashbuckling style of batting during his playing days and used to go after the bowlers irrespective of the format.

Sehwag enjoyed some fierce duels with Lee, one of the fastest bowlers of all time. The former Australian pacer used to bowl at over 150 kmph consistently and was a nightmare to face for even the best of batters. Lee is arguably one of the best fast bowlers the game has ever seen and he enjoyed great duels with Indian batters.

The former Australian pacer has always maintained he found the legendary Sachin Tendulkar the toughest to bowl to but he also holds his opening partner Sehwag in the same regard. Lee, who enjoyed some great battles with Sehwag, recalled how the former India opener was a character who just loved playing cricket and had the ability to get people hooked to their seats with his attacking strokeplay.

"The guy that looked a little bit like Sachin Tendulkar when he was batting. And I thought 'here we go again. Another Sachin Tendulkar. If one wasn't enough, we've got another one and he is opening the batting'. We in the Australian team had a ploy for Sehwag and even start the Test match with a third man, trying to suck him in to hit one down there. We tried that in an ODI match one day and he whacked it... he absolutely nailed it out of the ground. I just thought ‘this guy is too good," Lee said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"And he would give you that cheeky little wink. The best thing about Sehwag was that he was a character. He loved playing cricket and those little battle scars against the bowler. He got the ability to make people get hooked on to seats," he added.

Lee explained how Sehwag's unpredictable approach with the bat made him one of the toughest batters to bowl to. The two-time World Cup winner with Australia hailed Sehwag's intent and showered praise on the former India opener for his sensational batting skills.

"You think of the word cruel. You think of the word swashbuckling. Think of the world unpredictable, I think of none other than Virender Sehwag. He played with a smile on his face, with intent... the type of guy that would quite likely want to hit the first ball of a Test match for six... and he has done it," said Lee as he spoke highly about Sehwag.

"He is a guy that is so hard to bowl to because, as I mentioned, the unpredictability. You would bowl that beautiful line and length, thinking, I’ve got him… ball shaping away. And that big smile, Sehwag would go bang, hit you over cover for six," he added.

Sachin and Sehwag once formed the backbone of India's batting and the duo used to dominate the best bowling attacks in the world during their playing days. While Sachin remains the leading run-getter of all time in international cricket, Sehwag finished his career with 8586 runs in 104 Tests and 8273 runs in 251 ODIs.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Faf du Plessis is all set to reunite with the franchise as he has been reportedly roped in by the CSK management as a marquee player for their team in South Africa's new T20 league. Cricket South Africa (CSA) is yet to name the T20 tournament which is set to get underway next year and will have six teams, all owned by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.

While CSK owners have bought the Johannesburg franchise in CSA's new T20 league, Mumbai Indians (MI) have bagged the Cape Town team. The owners of Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants have bought the Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Paarl and Durban franchises respectively.

All six franchises have already made some key signings as Wednesday (August 10) was the last day for the direct acquisition of players. Cricket South Africa had asked all six teams to submit a list of a maximum of five players they have signed with a minimum of one South African part of the list.

The CSA rules also state that a franchise can only have three foreigners as part of their final five with not more than two players from one country, and at least one uncapped player on the list. As per a report in Cricbuzz, all six teams have retained some of the players from their existing teams in the IPL.

As per Cricbuzz, CSK have roped in Du Plessis for their Johannesburg franchise. The former South Africa captain was part of the CSK squad in the IPL from 2011 to 2021 barring just two seasons in 2016 and 2017 when the team was banned from the competition. However, CSK couldn't retain Du Plessis in the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year as he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Apart from Du Plessis, CSK have also signed England all-rounder Moeen Ali for their Johannesburg franchise. Ali will now for a CSK-owned franchise in both the IPL and the South African league. Mumbai Indians, who have acquired the MI Cape Town team for the CSA T20 league, have signed a host of superstars.

The franchise on Thursday (August 11) confirmed they have roped in Rashid Khan, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone for the South African T20 league. As per Cricbuzz, Delhi Capitals have retained their South African pacer Anrich Nortje while Sunrisers Hyderabad, who own the Port Elizabeth team, have retained Aiden Markram.

The T20 league in South Africa is likely to clash with UAE's league - ILT20 next year.

Trent Boult's decision to pull out of New Zealand Cricket's central contract has left the cricket fraternity surprised. The 33-year-old left-arm pacer is one of the vital cogs in New Zealand's fast bowling unit across formats and is one of the best in the world at present. Boult had requested to be released from the central contract to spend more time with his family.

His decision, however, has sparked a debate on players preferring franchise cricket over national duty. While he will continue to represent New Zealand in international cricket, Boult is set to have a significantly reduced role for the Black Caps and is likely to feature in only major tournaments.

With many questioning his decision to snub a central contract, Australian pace great Jason Gillespie has backed the Kiwi quick insisting that the cricket landscape is 'changing'. Gillespie believes a vast majority of players still want to play for their countries but the priorities will shift in the future.

He also extended support to Boult stating that it was nothing wrong with a 33-year-old fast bowler trying to maximise his earning potential and reducing the amount of cricket he plays to spend time with his family.

"Whether we like/agree or not, the cricketing landscape has been changing for a while now. The absolute vast majority of players want to play for their country first and foremost. There will come a time however when priorities shift," Gillespie wrote on Twitter.

"A 33 yr old seamer wanting to maximise his earning potential whilst he has currency AND get to spend more time with his young family? Hard to argue with that imho. We need to explore ways to make sure international cricket stays at the forefront of everyone's thinking going forward," he added.

Explaining his decision, Boult said it was a tough one but he decided to prioritise his family over the game. The eft-arm speedster, however, remains in the reckoning for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year despite not being a centrally contracted player anymore.

Boult has so far played 78 Tests, 93 ODIs and 45 T20Is for New Zealand, picking up 317, 169 and 63 wickets across the three formats, respectively. 33-yr-old seamer wanting to maximise his earning potential: Australia legend on Trent Boult's contract snub

Ross Taylor, one of the greatest batters to have played for New Zealand, has opened up about facing racism in his own team's dressing room in his new book. The former New Zealand batter has made some shocking revelations stating that cricket remains "a pretty white sport in New Zealand" and that he endured racist comments which were usually considered "banter" by those involved.

Taylor, who announced his retirement from international cricket in April this year, has been an epitome of grit and unwavering commitment in New Zealand cricket. One of the most dedicated players ever, Taylor was an absolute team man and won several matches for his country with his batting heroics across all three formats.

In his autobiography 'Black & White', the former New Zealand batter, who has Samoan heritage, revealed it felt like he was 'a brown face in a vanilla line-up' in the New Zealand cricket team. Taylor also alleged he was often mistaken as a Maori or an Indian by a few in New Zealand cricket. Maori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand.

"Cricket in New Zealand is a pretty white sport. For much of my career, I've been an anomaly, a brown face in a vanilla line-up. That has its challenges, many of which aren't readily apparent to your team-mates or the cricketing public," Taylor wrote in his book, an extract of which was published by the New Zealand Herald.

"Given that the Polynesian community is dramatically under-represented in the game, it's probably no surprise that people sometimes assume I'm Māori or Indian," he added.

Taylor also revealed how he had to put up with comments of racist nature in the New Zealand dressing room and that they were often slipped under the carpet as 'banter'. The former New Zealand batter said he would hesitate in calling out the individuals for their racist comments in fear that he would be accused of playing the 'race card' over so-called 'harmless banter'.

"In many ways, dressing-room banter is the barometer. A team-mate used to tell me, "You're half a good guy, Ross, but which half is good? You don't know what I'm referring to." I was pretty sure I did. Other players also had to put up with comments that dwelt on their ethnicity," Taylor wrote in his book.

"In all probability, a Pakeha [white New Zealander] listening to those sorts of comments would think, "Oh, that's okay, it's just a bit of banter." But he's hearing it as white person and it's not directed at people like him. So, there's no pushback; no one corrects them. Then the onus falls on the targets.

"You wonder if you should pull them up but worry that you'll create a bigger problem or be accused of playing the race card by inflating harmless banter into racism. It's easier to develop a thick skin and let it slide, but is that the right thing to do?," he added.

India has developed into a superpower in the world of cricket and perhaps its biggest gift to the game was the Indian Premier League. A look at the cash-rich tournament that has captivated cricket fan all around the world.

India@75: IPL – India’s gift to world cricket

After beating India for the first time in a World Cup clash during the 2021 T20 showpiece event last year, Pakistan will face Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue when both sides meet in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The Asian championship will kick off on August 27, in the UAE, and the arch-rivals will meet at the same venue (in Dubai) -- where they last met in October 2021 -- to resume their rivalry.

Ahead of the marquee clash, former Pakistan pacer Tauseef Ahmed has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for not settling the Men in Green line-up and feels Babar Azam & Co. only care about facing India in the mega event in the UAE.

“Ye rona dhona toh bohot puraana hai (this has been going on for long now). You didn't try to settle the team. The same players that were there a few years ago are coming back in some way or the other. When something this crucial coming up, you go back to those players about whom you once said that they should leave cricket. It means you didn't have a back-up plan,” Ahmed told Sports Paktv.

New Zealand pacer Trent Boult's decision to snub New Zealand Cricket (NZC)'s central contract has left many surprised. Boult was released from the central contract list by NZC on Wednesday (August 10) at his own request as the fast bowler has decided to spend more time with his family. Boult's participation in international cricket will now be limited as he is not a centrally-contracted player anymore.

While his decision has sparked rumours of early retirement, Boult will not regularly feature across all three formats for New Zealand. His participation will be reduced to a significant extent as the board will prefer players with central contracts over the left-arm pacer.

The release from the central contract has also put Boult's participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in doubt. The left-arm fast bowler has been one of the vital cogs in the New Zealand pace attack over the years and played an instrumental role in helping his team reach the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

David White, the CEO of New Zealand Cricket is however, hopeful Boult will be part of the Kiwi squad for the showpiece event in Australia later this year. White said Boult is more likely to feature only in global tournaments now and might not take part in bilateral cricket.

"I’d imagine that he will be selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia because he’s been a big part of our plans and preparation for that. He knows he will be playing a significantly less amount of international cricket," White was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz.

"We’ve said to him that, in the future, priority for selection will be given to centrally contracted Black Caps and domestic players. Although, we will, on a case-by-case basis, consider him.

"I think it’s fair to say there’s more likelihood of him participating in global events than bilateral cricket. He’s just found it very demanding with a young family and wife he wants to spend more time with," he added.

Virat Kohli is gearing up for his return in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, which will be held in the UAE from August 27-September 11. Kohli was out of action during Rohit Sharma-led India's white-ball tour of West Indies as the out-of-form batter was given rest and, hence, all eyes are now on his comeback.

Ahead of his return, Kohli is on the verge of attaining a unique feat under his belt. So far, he has represented India in 99 T20Is and, hence, the Men in Blue's Asia Cup opener, versus Pakistan on August 28, will see him play his 100th game in the format. Thus, he will become only the second cricketer overall to play 100 matches in all forms of the game for his national side. Earlier, Ross Taylor had attained this feat during Kohli-led India's tour of New Zealand in the pre-Covid era in early 2020.

Prior to the Asia Cup campaign, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opined on Kohli's form. The star Indian batter has been woefully out of touch of late and, hence, there is a lot of pressure on him ahead of India's T20 World Cup squad announcement.

In this regard, Chopra told on Star Sports, "Doesn’t matter if he (Kohli) scores a 40 or 70 because everybody has a role to play. There’s synergy in every player; regardless of the position he bats at, you are just going hell for leather. If that’s the mindset, then it’s going to be a lot easier for Kohli."

He added, "It’s the perfect set-up. The kind of cricket India is playing at the moment, the team doesn’t expect Kohli to score 70 or a 100 or finish the game. You just come and play your natural game, that’s more than enough."

So far, Kohli has amassed 3308 runs in 99 T20Is. Will he make a big score in the upcoming clash versus Pakistan? Only time will tell...

Asia Cup: Virat Kohli to become 2nd cricketer to complete unique ton in India's opener vs Pakistan

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar shared an emotional video from his hospital bed after undergoing knee surgery in Melbourne. One of the fastest bowlers to have graced the game, Akhtar was a nightmare to face for the best of batters during his playing days. He was fondly called the 'Rawalpindi Express' for his brutal pace and continues to hold the record for bowling the fastest delivery in international cricket.

But his fast bowling exploits came with a cost as Akhtar constantly faced knee issues throughout his career. The severe problems in his knee also saw him miss several matches for Pakistan throughout his international career. Akhtar has himself admitted in the past he has undergone several surgeries due to his knee issues.

The legendary fast bowler underwent another surgery at a hospital in Melbourne recently. He took to social media to post a video from his hospital bed, urging his fans to pray for his recovery. An emotional Akhtar said he is in immense pain and hopefully will not have to undergo another surgery in his life.

I am in huge pain even after 11 years of my retirement. I could have played for another four to five years. But I was aware that if I did, I would become wheelchair-bound. That’s the reason why I retired from cricket," said Akhtar.

Akhtar made his debut for Pakistan in a Test match against West Indies in 1997 and gradually went on to become a vital cog in their pace attack. Team India's star batter Shikhar Dhawan has opened up on his absence from the T20I squad despite his consistent performances with the bat. Dhawan has not been part of India's T20I squad for quite a while now and played his last T20I for the Men in Blue against Sri Lanka in July last year and has since not been part of the squad.

Dhawan has been one of the most consistent performers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL 2021 with 587 runs and followed it up with another impressive campaign for his new team Punjab Kings this year. He notched up 460 runs in IPL 2022 and was among the top performers with the willow.

However, despite his consistent run in the IPL, Dhawan has failed to impress the selectors, who seem to have closed the door on the veteran batter as far as T20Is are concerned. Dhawan was recently asked about his non-selection in India's T20I squad and said he had no idea why he is not selected.

“I honestly don’t know about it, maybe it could be the reason. I don’t want to go deep about it I have not played T20 for India for a long time now, I don’t know where I see myself. I look to make the most out of every opportunity I am getting. Be it IPL, domestic cricket, or ODI, I just want to do well, and that is the only thing under my control,” Dhawan told the Indian Express.

While he is no more part of India's T20I plans, Dhawan has also been not in the scheme of things of India in Tests. The prolific left-hander played his last Test match in September 2018 and has not managed to make a comeback amid the rise of youngsters like Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul among others.

'I honestly don't know': Shikhar Dhawan on reason behind his absence from India's T20I squad

The Indian team has already begun their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 as they aim to go the distance this time around after enduring a disappointing campaign in the showpiece event last year. India failed to make it to the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE last year. With the World Cup just a few months away, India face a lot of selection headaches.

While the top four in the batting line-up is certain, there remain a lot of options to consider in the middle-order with the likes of Suraykumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja all in the fray. Karthik has been unstoppable as a finisher ever since making his comeback for the Indian team earlier this year and is one of the favourites to make the cut.

The veteran wicket-keeper batter had a sensational campaign for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and has continued his purple patch for the Men in Blue. While many believe he deserves a spot in India's T20 World Cup squad, former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja feels otherwise.

Jadeja believes Karthik should be in the batting line-up if India play both captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the playing XI as he will act like an 'insurance' down the order. However, if the duo aren't not playing together Karthik is not needed. The former India cricketer also said he won't pick Karthik in India's T20 World Cup squad but won't mind having him alongside him in the commentary team.

“Now if you want to play the way I have heard them...aggressive then you have to pick differently. If Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma walks in, you need Dinesh Karthik at all cost. He is your insurance. But if you don't have either of them then Dinesh Karthik has no work here. But yes I would not put Karthik there, he can have a seat beside me. He is very good as a commentator. But there, in the team, I would not pick him," Jadeja said during a discussion on FanCode.

Karthik, however, has been picked in India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 later this month with the selectors indicating that he remains in their plans for the T20 World Cup 2022. While he snubbed Karthik, Jadeja wants fast bowler Mohammed Shami to be in India's squad for the World Cup despite him not being in the scheme of things in T20Is.

“I have added Shami to the team. So for me, I select bowlers first. So Shami is a certainty. Bumrah, Arshdeep and Chahal. These are the four certainties. In batting, four are certainties for me - Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Deepak Hooda. For this bowling attack, you have powerplay, middle overs and death overs sorted," said Jadeja.

Shami has not played a T20I match for India since his last appearance for the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. He is also not part of India's squad for the Asia Cup 2022 and is unlikely to make the cut for the T20 World Cup in Australia this year.

Former South African umpire Rudi Koertzen, along with three other people died in a car accident near Riversdale on Tuesday, a news report revealed. The 73-year-old Koertzen was on his way back home from Cape Town to Despatch in Eastern Cape, after a golf weekend when the tragic incident took place. His son, Rudi Koertzen Jr said that his father died on impact.

"He went on a golf tournament with some of his friends, and they were expected to come back on Monday, but it seems they decided to play another round of golf", Koertzen Jr told South African outlet Algoa FM News.

Koertzen officiated in 331 international matches, a record at the time of his retirement in 2010 - Pakistan`s Aleem Dar has since gone past Koertzen. Along with Dar and West Indies` Steve Bucknor, Koertzen was one of only three umpires to stand in over 100 Tests.

"It is a very big loss foremost for his family and then for South Africa and cricket," Dar was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"I stood in so many games with him. He was not only very good as an umpire but also an excellent colleague, always very cooperative on field and also always willing to help off the field. Because of the way he was, he was also well-respected by players," he added.

Fellow South African umpire, Marais Erasmus, said, "Rudi was such a strong character, physically and mentally. He paved the way for South African umpires to get to the world stage. Made us all believe it`s possible. A true legend. As a young umpire a learnt a lot from him."

Koertzen`s first international series was India`s tour of South Africa in 1992-93 as his first game was the second ODI in Gqeberha (then Port Elizabeth). He went on to become one of the best and most well-respected umpires in the world, and won praise in September 1999 for refusing a bribe to manipulate a match between West Indies and India in Singapore.

However, the 2007 World cup final was a blip in Koertzen`s career. He was the third umpire in that match in Barbados, where the officials came in for criticism - and were penalised by the ICC - following a chaotic finish to the game.

Following his retirement from internationals in 2010, Koertzen published a book, Slow Death: Memoirs of a Cricket Umpire (with Chris Schoeman), in which he forthrightly addressed the 2007 World Cup final and other high-profile "errors" he had made in his career.

The last representative game he stood in was in 2011, an IPL match between Royal Challenger Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru

Sehwag was known for his aggressive and swashbuckling batting style during his playing days and would often go after the bowlers from the word go. Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin slammed the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's cricket team after their defeat against Australia in the gold medal match at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday (August 07). The Indian women's team lost the final against Australia by 9 runs after failing to chase down the target of 162 runs in 20 overs.

India got off to a poor start in the summit clash as they lost both their openers Smriti Mandhana (6) and Shafali Verma (11) cheaply to be reeling at 22/2 inside the first three overs. However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues then joined forces in the middle to help the Women in Blue fight back with a 96-run stand for the second wicket.

While Harmanpreet slammed a brilliant 65 off 43 balls, Rodrigues scored a run-a-ball 33. While it seemed the duo would take India home comfortably, they ended up throwing away their wickets in quick succession as India lost the plot towards the end to eventually fall short in the run chase.

Rubbish batting, no common sense: Mohammad Azharuddin slams India after CWG final defeat against Australia

The Indian women's cricket team once again succumbed to the big stage fright to suffer a nine-run defeat against the mighty Australia in the gold medal match of the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. The 'Women In Blue' lost the battle of nerves and also the last five wickets for 13 runs with some poor strategic moves and even more atrocious shot selections leaving a lot to be desired.

Losing like winning is also a habit and in the end, the self-belief of the Southern Stars prevailed with the opposition taking a lot of pressure on themselves. Beth Mooney (61 off 41) made a stroke-filled half century as Australia managed to reach 161 for eight despite a spirited fielding effort from India.

With 50 needed off the last six overs with eight wickets in hand, and Harmanpreet (65 off 43) in the middle of a special innings, it should have been a straightforward chase for India.

However, India found a way to fluff it as they lost eight wickets for 32 runs to come short in a major final once again. India's inexplicable batting collapse was also reminiscent of their failure in the 2017 ODI World Cup final in England.

Sharing an 96-run stand after the fall of openers, Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues (33 off 33) were controlling the chase but the latter's dismissal triggered the collapse. The batters manufactured ways to get dismissed with innings including three run outs. India were eventually bowled out for 152 with three balls left.

The shots that Harmanpreet and Jemimah played were also questionable but they could not be solely blamed for the abject surrender. It was between 14.3 overs and 15.5 overs, a space of nine deliveries that India lost the game with Jemimah being bowled by Megan Schutt and Harmanpreet playing a suicidal lap-scoop off Ashleigh Gardner which was brilliantly pouched by an alert Alyssa Healy.

Deepti Sharma going for a non-existent second run and Concussion sub Yastika Bhatia being sent after Radha Yadav were questionable decisions taken by coach Ramesh Powar and skipper Harman.

A silver medal finish was still a creditable one for India who beat England in the semi-finals on Saturday. It can also be said the women's cricket debut at the Commonwealth Games was largely a success. A packed house at Edgbaston witnessed the first-ever final in CWG.

Earlier, Australia opted to bat on a bright and sunny afternoon. Renuka Singh, the stand-out pacer for India in this tournament, once again provided an early breakthrough by trapping the dangerous Alyssa Healy leg before with a delivery that moved in a shade.

The Indians went for the DRS in the last second and it was successful. Mooney (61 off 41)and skipper Meg Lanning (36 off 26) then stitched a 78-run stand and once again it seemed Australia would bat India out of the game like they had done in the T20 World Cup final couple of years ago.

Lanning made her intent clear as she dispatched a length ball off Renuka over mid off for the first six of the match.
The Indian fielders who are often criticised had a fine day in the middle. It started with a close run out of Lanning and included two fine catches from Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav.

Deepti plucked one off the right hand to get rid of a well set Mooney while Radha took a low diving catch at backward point to dismiss Tahlia McGrath, who played the game despite testing positive for COVID-19.

Australia looked set for a 180 plus total but India fought back in the last five overs taking five wickets for 35 runs.
Renuka ended with tidy figures of 2 for 25 in four overs while fellow pacer Meghna Singh was under bowled as India used seven bowling options.

Sneh Rana (2/38) was the most expensive bowler who bowled their full quota but took two crucial wickets of Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner.

The women's cricket final between India and Australia at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday was marred with controversy after Tahlia McGrath was allowed to play for the Aussies despite testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of the game. McGrath returned a positive test and had mild symptoms but was allowed to take the field in the gold medal match after the approval of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Due to the conundrum over her participation, the toss between India and Australia was delayed for 12 minutes at Edgbaston. Had the tournament been in Australia, McGrath wouldn't have featured but she was allowed to play the game as the rules regarding COVID-19 at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham are relaxing.

Nonetheless, questions were raised as McGrath was spotted sitting with a mask on in the dugout during Australia's innings at Edgbaston. She was seen isolated from the rest of the squad. However, McGrath took the mask off later when she came out to bat and later while fielding for her team.

"We were all happy to play, she was happy to play. She feels absolutely fine so I think the positive result was a bit of a shock to her, but that’s Covid isn’t it, we’re all going to live through it," Schutt was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

McGrath scored 2 runs and bowled two overs conceding 24 runs during India's innings. She also took the catch of Indian opener Shafali Verma and was spotted asking her teammates to stay away when they ran towards her to celebrate the dismissal.

Hardik Pandya reveals why captain Rohit Sharma is not playing in 5th T20I against West Indies

Team India have witnessed several captaincy changes already this year with as many as seven captains leading the team across formats so far in 2022. While Rohit Sharma is India's permanent captain across all three formats, there have been multiple captaincy changes this year due to COVID-19, injuries and giving rest to players.

The Indian team started 2022 with KL Rahul captaining the side in the first Test match of the year against South Africa before Virat Kohli came back to lead the team in the next game. Kohli then quit all three formats as captain allowing Rohit to take over as India's all-format captain. However, Rohit missed India's ODI series against South Africa due to an injury and Rahul again lead the team.

Rohit then made a comeback from injury and led India against West Indies and Sri Lanka at home. Following the conclusion of IPL 2022, Rohit was rested from the five-match T20I series against South Africa at home where Rahul was supposed to lead the side again. However, Rishabh Pant took the captaincy baton due to an injury to Rahul.

India then headed to Ireland for a T20I without a number of senior players, who were busy preparing for the one-off Test against England at the same time. Hardik Pandya led India against Ireland becoming the 5th captain to lead the Indian team in 2022.

Jasprit Bumrah then was asked to captain India in absence of a COVID-positive Rohit in the one-off Test against England before Shikhar Dhawan led the team in the recently-concluded ODI series against West Indies in the absence of the Hitman.

When asked about the multiple captaincy changes for India so far in 2022, skipper Rohit Sharma said it is important to have leadership in the squad. Rohit said it was a positive sign that India have so many players who can be relied upon for the captaincy position.

"I think it's very important to have that leadership, but obviously, you know, we play the IPL and it's a 10-team tournament. So, there will be 10 captains who, at some stage, will be a part of the Indian team as well," Rohit said on Star Sports' show "Follow The Blues".

"You know, I think it's fantastic because, honestly, my job is much less as these guys understand everything pretty well. So, it's just about if someone's having a thought, how am I going to back up that thought. For me, as captain, that is my role and that is what I'm trying to do," he added.

Dhawan will lead India once again on their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe later this month as a number of senior players have been rested for the series. Rohit will then be back to captain India at the Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE.

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India enter CWG 2022 final after beating England by 4 runs in a thriller

Virat Kohli has been going through one of the worst lean patches in his international career so far as he has struggled to score runs consistently across formats for team India. The former India captain has not scored a century since November 2019 and has endured a woeful run with the bat recently.

Kohli was part of India's Test and limited-overs squad during the recently-concluded tour of England where he flopped massively and failed to get going. The lack of runs from his bat also led to several former cricketers and experts questioning the senior batter's place in India's T20I squad ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year.

While he has been criticised by many for his poor form with calls to drop him from T20Is, Kohli still retains the confidence of captain Rohit Sharma and the Indian team management. The senior batter will be backed by the team management despite his current poor form.

In the wake of Kohli's disastrous run for the Indian team, former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez shared his views on India's decision to rest Kohli from the ongoing T20I series against West Indies. While Hafeez insisted Kohli has lost his impact over the last couple of years, the decision to rest him is a good one from the Indian team.

"I think Virat Kohli is an impact player. In the past 2-3 years, we saw that the impact wasn't there. Even when he scored a half-century against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup last year, that was, to me, impactless. Until you can't bring an impact, there's no point in you playing," Hafeez was quoted as saying by Pakistan daily Dawn.

"Every player requires a break. The Indian board made a good decision. This break will help him get back to becoming an impact player. He had lost his impact," he added.

'He has lost his impact': Former Pakistani all-rounder makes bold comment on Virat Kohli's poor form

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the 'old powers' of cricket, Australia and England, over their criticism of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar lashed out at those accusing the IPL for being the disruptor of the cricketing calendar and said the likes of England and Australia should mind their own business and not interfere in India's cricketing matters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been targeted by many of late over the potential clash of the schedules of the UAE and the South Africa T20 leagues with Australia's Big Bash League and England's The Hundred. BCCI is at the centre of criticism as several IPL owners have bought teams in both the UAE and the South African T20 leagues.

Three teams that will be part of the UAE's ILT20 league have been bought by the owners of IPL franchises, while all six teams that will participate in the South Africa T20 league have also been purchased by IPL team owners. With IPL's influence growing globally, the league has been blamed for disrupting the cricket calendar.

Gavaskar has slammed those criticising the Indian Premier League and said the likes of Australia and England should look after their own cricketing interests and not interfere in India's matters as both have Big Bash and The Hundred have their own separate windows in the annual cricket calendar.

"So, by all means, look after your cricket interests but hey please don’t interfere in ours and tell us what to do. We will look after our interests and do it better than what you tell us to do," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar slamming Australia and England.

Gavaskar suggested both England and Australia cricket boards are unhappy that the clash of schedules of the various T20 leagues will see some top players from around the globe opting to play in UAE and South Africa instead of heading to the Big Bash or The Hundred.

"It’s been amusing to read that the Indian Premier League is once again seen as a disruptor of the cricketing calendar of other international teams. The moment the news about the South African T20 league and the UAE T20 league came out, the ‘old powers’ started squirming and got their apologists to have a go at the IPL," Gavaskar wrote in his column.

"The IPL has got a 75-day window in the international calendar and that’s simply because, thankfully, there are some administrators who can read the tea leaves and know it’s better to let their players play in the cricket world’s richest league than hold them back with some international commitments. The England & Wales Cricket Board has created a window for its showpiece event The Hundred when the England team don’t play any international matches."

"The Australians, too, have scheduled their Big Bash when their contracted players will be available to play. But it’s worrying them that the UAE and the South African T20 leagues are scheduled around the same time and there’s the danger of some of their players opting to play there instead of the Big Bash," he added.

Gavaskar called out the hypocrisy of some of the former England and Australia players, who want Indian players should be allowed to take part in overseas like Big Bash and The Hundred to ensure the popularity of their leagues grow but the BCCI cannot protect IPL's identity by not allowing their players to play in overseas leagues.

"Some overseas former players have said that the Indian players should be allowed to play the Big Bash or the Hundred. Basically, they want their leagues to have more sponsorship etc. They are concerned about their cricket, which is totally understandable," Gavaskar wrote.

"But when Indian cricket looks to protect its cricket by ensuring that their players stay fresh for their matches and thus restricting them from playing overseas, that is not acceptable to the guys from the ‘old powers’," the former India captain added.

IPL is currently the biggest and the most expensive T20 league in the world. It is arguably the best domestic cricket tournament in the world attracting top talent from across the globe. Also Read: Mohammed Shami not part of Team India's T20I plans, confirms BCCI selection committee member Gavaskar suggested both England and Australia cricket boards are unhappy that the clash of schedules of the various T20 leagues will see some top players from around the globe opting to play in UAE and South Africa instead of heading to the Big Bash or The Hundred. The England & Wales Cricket Board has created a window for its showpiece event The Hundred when the England team don’t play any international matches." "The Australians, too, have scheduled their Big Bash when their contracted players will be available to play. But it’s worrying them that the UAE and the South African T20 leagues are scheduled around the same time and there’s the danger of some of their players opting to play there instead of the Big Bash," he added. Also Read: 'Saw the same with Gavaskar-Kapil, Ganguly-Sachin' - BCCI treasurer shares take on Kohli vs Rohit debate Gavaskar called out the hypocrisy of some of the former England and Australia players, who want Indian players should be allowed to take part in overseas like Big Bash and The Hundred to ensure the popularity of their leagues grow but the BCCI cannot protect IPL's identity by not allowing their players to play in overseas leagues. The cash-rich league also is the strongest financially and offers players the highest salary among the top T20 leagues in the world.

Cricket's much-anticipated inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics received a shot in the arm as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shortlisted it for a review along with eight other sporting disciplines.
Cricket has only featured once at the 1900 Paris Olympic Games, with Great Britain and hosts France as only participants.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, The development comes a day after the International Cricket Committee (ICC) was formally invited by both the LA28 and IOC to submit presentation in order to make their case considered. However, a final decision is expected to be announced ahead of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai sometime in mid-2023.

The other eight sports in consideration for the showpiece event are baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kick-boxing, squash, and motorsport. In February this year, the IOC said that a total of 28 sporting events will be part of the Los Angeles Games and also added that the 'potential new sports' will be considered with a focus on youth.

As per IOC diktat, a sport should clear some set of criteria in order to be considered for inclusion.
This includes priorities to cost and complexity reduction, engaging the best athletes and sports with safety and health first, global appeal, host country interest, gender equality, youth relevance, upholding integrity and fairness to support clean sports, and long-term sustainability. Cricket is currently being featured in the ongoing Commonwealth Games with the women's T20 format being played among eight nations, albeit only the women's teams are participating in it.

However, for a sporting event to be featured at the Olympic Games, it must be for both men and women.
ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said he was pleased the way the cricket was viewed during the Birmingham Games and the sport has been a "star attraction" at the showpiece event. "We've seen from the Commonwealth Games how much the world's best players have enjoyed playing in front of big crowds and what I'm sure will be large TV audiences," Allardice told the website.

KL Rahul's recent fitness issues have seen him miss a number of matches for India ahead of the T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be played in Australia later this year. While he has not played for India since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 earlier this year, Rahul's fitness issues can now reportedly see him miss out on vice-captaincy at the T20 World Cup 2022.

As per a report in Insidesport, Hardik Pandya is all set to pip Rahul to be named India's vice-captain for T20 World Cup in Australia this year. Hardik has been enjoying excellent form with the bat and ball ever since making his comeback for the Indian team post IPL 2022 and the all-rounder has become a vital cog in the limited-overs setup once again.

The report claims that Hardik will be named India's vice-captain when the selectors announce the squad for T20 World Cup 2022. He will serve as deputy to captain Rohit Sharma in the showpiece event. Hardik is already part of India's leadership group and had led the team on their tour of Ireland recently.

He showcased terrific leadership skills in IPL 2022 where he led Gujarat Titans to their maiden title in their debut season before making his comeback for Team India in the South Africa series at home. Hardik was then named India's captain for the Ireland tour where he led the team in the absence of senior players. He is currently India's vice-captain in their ongoing T20I series against West Indies.

“Hardik is a world-class player and it’s great to have him back in the team at full fitness. Whether he will be named vice-captain is up to the selectors. But he is already a leader in the group. As an all-rounder, he understands both situations. He has outstanding leadership skills and we saw that in the IPL. He will surely do well,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Insidesport.

Rahul currently remains India's designated vice-captain in white-ball cricket but his fitness issues and recent absence from one series after another might see Hardik pip him as far as T20Is are concerned. As per the report, Rahul is expected to remain India's vice-captain in ODIs and Tests.

While it remains to be seen if Hardik will officially be announced as India's vice-captain for the T20 World Cup 2022, a clear picture will be projected when the selectors announce India's squad for the Asia Cup 2022 later this month. Both Rahul and Hardik are likely to be part of India's squad for the tournament.
