Javid assertions come after NHS England and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that the pulse oximeters can overestimate the amount of oxygen in the blood.

Britain’s statistics office has found that in the first year of the pandemic, up to March 2021, Black and South Asian people in the UK had higher death rates than their white compatriots, even after factors like occupation and underlying health conditions were taken into account.

But Javid, believes that the issue is not confined to Britain alone, and many similar cases can be discovered in other parts of the world.

"I want to make sure that we do something about it but not just in the UK. This is an international issue so I'm going to work with my counterparts across the world to change this," said Javid.

He said he had already spoken about the issue to his US counterpart, who was as interested in it as he was.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Austria's capital city Vienna to protest against the new restrictions introduced against the deadly coronavirus. The government has imposed a new lockdown and mandated anti-Covid vaccines from next year onwards.

As per police, crowds of nearly 35,000 people gathered in the city whistling, clapping and banging drums. Many were seen waving Austrian and other flags. Protestors were also seen with placards that read “no to vaccination”, “enough is enough” or “down with the fascist dictatorship”.

Meanwhile, the WHO said that it is "very worried" about the new wave of Covid-19 infections in Europe amid a surge in cases.

WHO’s Europe director, Dr Hans Kluge, while speaking to BBC has warned that 500,000 more deaths could be recorded by March.&nbsp;

As per Kluge, various factors have contributed to the growing cases, including winter season, insufficient vaccine coverage and increasing cases of transmissible Delta variant.&nbsp;

Talking about mandating vaccines, he said that this should be seen as "last resort." However, he added that it would be "very timely" to have a "legal and societal debate" about the issue.

"Based on a WHO estimate of 237 million worldwide Covid-19 infections, this global pooled...estimate indicates that around 100 million individuals currently experience or have previously experienced long-term health-related consequences of Covid," the researchers said. They further warned that long Covid can increase pressure on the health care system.&nbsp;

Long Covid can be defined as new or persistent symptoms of the disease after four or more weeks of the infection. Most common symptoms of long Covid that persisted after recovery are fatigue, breathing problems, pain and anxiety or depression and abdominal symptoms.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a study in September showed that 1 in 3 Covid patients had at least one long Covid symptom even after three to six months after recovery.&nbsp;

Nearly 100 million people worldwide have suffered from long Covid: Study

The&nbsp;EU's drug watchdog on Friday backed Merck's anti-Covid&nbsp;pill&nbsp;for emergency use ahead of its formal authorisation and started reviewing Pfizer's antiviral treatment as cases soar across Europe.

The two pills by the US pharma giants represent a potentially groundbreaking step in the fight against coronavirus as studies show they cut the risk of hospitalisation and death in high-risk patients.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said that while the Merck&nbsp;pill&nbsp;was not yet approved, it had "issued advice" so that individual countries in the 27-nation&nbsp;EU&nbsp;could decide whether to use it in case of a surge in infections.

"The medicine, which is currently not authorised in the&nbsp;EU, can be used to treat adults with&nbsp;COVID-19 who do not require supplemental oxygen and who are at increased risk of developing severe&nbsp;COVID-19," the EMA said in a statement.

"EMA issued this advice to support national authorities who may decide on possible early use of the medicine prior to&nbsp;marketing authorisation, for example in emergency use settings, in light of rising rates of infection and deaths due to&nbsp;Covid-19 across the&nbsp;EU."

The Merck&nbsp;pill&nbsp;should not be used by pregnant women or women who are not using contraception and could get pregnant, the EMA said.

"These recommendations are given as laboratory studies in animals have shown that high doses of (the Merck&nbsp;pill) can impact the growth and development of the foetus," it added.

The&nbsp;pill&nbsp;should be given as soon as possible after&nbsp;Covid&nbsp;symptoms start, at the latest within five days. It should then be taken for five days, the EMA said.

The Amsterdam-based watchdog says it hopes to decide on formal approval for the Merck&nbsp;pill, also known as molnupiravir, by the end of the year.

Separately&nbsp;the EMA said it had started a review of Pfizer's&nbsp;pill&nbsp;so that it could give similar advice.

"EMA is reviewing currently available data on the use of Paxlovid, an oral treatment for&nbsp;COVID-19 developed by Pfizer," the EMA said.

A full "rolling review" for formal approval is expected to start next week, but the EMA said it wanted to be able to help national authorities "in the shortest possible timeframe".

Trials show both pills are particularly effective in treating newly-infected high-risk patients when given within days of the onset of the disease.

They are both cheaper and easier to administer than other antivirals which need to be taken intravenously, and also cheaper than vaccines to make, with a simpler supply chain.

Merck's&nbsp;pill&nbsp;decreases the ability of the coronavirus to multiply by increasing the number of mutations in its genetic material (or RNA).

The Pfizer&nbsp;pill&nbsp;uses a different method, belonging to a class of antivirals called "protease inhibitors", which block the action of an enzyme that is critical to viral replication.&nbsp;

It is a combination of a new molecule, PF-07321332, and HIV antiviral ritonavir.

It was then concluded that the vaccine shows the same efficacy rate as those recorded in trials among adults aged 16 to 25.&nbsp;

"After a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence, the department has determined that the benefits of this vaccine for children between five and 11 years of age outweigh the risks," said an official statement from Health Canada. 
It was found that the vaccine is 90 per cent effective at preventing the deadly coronavirus. Also, there were no serious side effects seen.

"To date, Health Canada has not identified any new safety issues for 5-11 year olds compared to the known safety profile in adolescents and young adults. Safety data will be continually monitored," Health Canada wrote on Twitter.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Canada had authorised the same vaccine for children aged 12 years and up.

As per data by Health Canada, nearly 75 per cent of all Canadians are fully vaccinated, including 84 per cent of those 12 and older.

Not just Canada but countries like Israel and the US have also authorised Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine for children.&nbsp; 
China, the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia and Colombia have also started vaccinating children under 12. However, they are using Chinese vaccines.

Meanwhile, the pharma giant has struck a deal to sell 10 million Covid-19 treatment courses to the US government for USD 5.3 billion. It said that approval of the agreement was pending from regulators.&nbsp;

Pfizer will start delivering the treatments to the US government later this year and continue through the end of 2022.

The couple’s modus operandi involved using fake and stolen identities to get their hands on the funds. The scam saw the suspects steal dozens of identities and produce fake ones, which they used to submit claims.

The whereabouts of Richard Ayvazyan and Marietta Terabelian remain unknown. The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to their arrest.

The couple’s three children— aged 13, 15 and 16—are under the care of their grandmothers and a court-appointed guardian.

"The rules that we have introduced match what our customers feel and that's a good thing. So we aren't having to face disappointed faces at the door of people who aren't being allowed in, that hasn't hardly happened with any of our regulars since we have the new rule," she added.

Similar rules have been put in place in Austrian hotspots where police have also reported a general acceptance of the rule.

A portal is being made to enable people to claim damages. At least 10,000 people have registered interest to make a claim.

Fully vaccinated foreign travellers from 99 countries, who have a mutual recognition pact of vaccine certificates with India, have been permitted to enter without undergoing quarantine, according to revised guidelines issued by the Indian government.

However, they would be required to follow certain mandatory procedures before arriving in India.

Before their scheduled arrival, travellers from these listed countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands and Russia, are required submit a self-declaration form on the Air Suvidha portal (newdelhiairport.in).

The passengers also have to upload a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR report, 72 hours prior to their journey, according to the revised Guidelines for International Arrivals released by the Union health ministry on November 11.

Each passenger shall also submit a declaration with respect to the authenticity of the report and will be liable for criminal prosecution, if found otherwise.

India shares an agreement with some of the 99 nations on ‘mutual recognition of COVID-19 vaccination certificates’ of nationally recognised or the WHO recognised vaccines.

Some of the countries, which features in ‘Category A’ list, do not have a mutual recognition of Covid-19 vaccine agreement with India, but they permit quarantine-free entry in their land to fully vaccinated Indian nationals, the guidelines read.

Some of the countries currently considered to be "at risk" by India, which means the travellers from where would need to follow additional measures on arrival including testing, are the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Singapore.

The zoo described the development as “truly heartbreaking”.&nbsp;

“Ranney, Everest and Makalu were beloved by our entire community inside and outside of the zoo. This loss is truly heartbreaking, and we are all grieving together,” the statement said. &nbsp;

The zoo had started treating the leopards and two Sumatran tigers for the virus last month. The tigers, Axl and Kumar, have made a recovery, the zoo said.&nbsp;

The holidays are around the corner and the COVID-19 cases in US are refusing to die down. Fearful of contracting coronavirus infection, a majority of families in America are now banning their unvaccinated relatives from holiday gatherings this year.

A poll was conducted on November 2 by OnePoll agency to examine how the COVID-19 vaccine has impacted people’s relationships with their loved ones ahead of the holidays this year. Around 2,000 US residents were surveyed, of them 65 per cent are vaccinated.

The results revealed that 63 per cent of the respondents don’t feel comfortable inviting unvaccinated family members to their parties. Six in 10 people have cut off ties with unvaccinated family members.

Half the poll (53 per cent) feel that the politicisation of the vaccine has completely divided their families.

All the infected animals had mild symptoms, although some had a cough and nasal discharge as well, the zoo said. Most of the infected cats showed no signs of illness, but a few had a decreased appetite and were less active for short periods of time.&nbsp;

“As in humans, we would expect that full protection against this virus would not be developed until a few weeks after the second injection in a series,” news agency AP quoted Dr Sathya Chinnadurai, the zoo’s director of animal health, as saying.

Speaking in a broadcast clip, Boris Johnson said, “I’m seeing the storm clouds gathering over parts of the European continent. And I’ve got to be absolutely frank with people: we’ve been here before. We remember what happens when the wave starts rolling in,” he said.

Norway, for example, has already given third dose to those aged 65 and above, while it is planning to offer the booster shot to everyone aged 18 and older.

Italy said that from December 1, it will also offer the third dose to people over 40.

The unvaccinated will not be able to leave the house except for reasons such as

buying essential supplies, exercise or seeking medical care.

"The aim is clear: we want on Sunday to give the green light for a nationwide lockdown for the unvaccinated," Schallenberg told a press conference.

He said lockdowns across the country would be enforced with "random" spot checks.

The measure will have to be signed off by parliament and a meeting of the heads of regional governments over the weekend before it can be rolled out across the country.

Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein announced on Friday he would order compulsory vaccination for health workers but did not specify when this would enter into force.

Mueckstein said that availability in intensive care units in the hardest-hit areas was becoming "ever scarcer". 
Schallenberg said the government had been reluctant to consider the latest measure but justified it by saying: "The majority of the population, who have done the right thing, who have protected themselves -- now we have to protect them too."

"I don't accept that the solidarity of the protected majority with the unprotected minority should go as far as a lockdown," he said.

He called again on those who have not yet been vaccinated to get the jab.
