What is different about it?

B.1.1.529 has shown 50 mutations. 30 of these mutations are on the spike protein alone. Most of COVID-19 vaccines in use target the spike protein. The virus uses spike protein to gain access to our body cells. More mutations of the spike protein means better ability for the virus to break vaccine protection.

Can the new Covid variant be deadlier?

Researchers are currently trying to determine exact answer of this. WHO is also analysing information to decide whether it can be called a 'variant of concern'

However, large number of mutations, exceeding those seen in previous variants, have been observed in B.1.1.529. And considering it was&nbsp;mutations that created obstacles in our path to find vaccine for the original variant, it can be said that the new one has everyone take&nbsp; notice.

Where was it found?

The new variant was detected in South Africa. As per Francois Balloux, Director of the London-based UCL Genetics Institute who has been quoted in media reports,&nbsp;the first infection may have come from a patient who possibly was an untreated AIDS patient.

How many cases have been detected so far?

South Africa has confirmed about 100 specimens as B.1.1.529.

South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported a rise in new Covid&nbsp;infections. Although the NICD didn't attribute latest resurgence to new variant, it is being believed in the local scientific community that the new variant is the cause.

South Africa on Friday termed the UK's travel ban from six southern African countries “rushed”, even as several countries, including the 27-member EU, announced similar restrictions.

Britain joined the EU, Israel and other countries to temporarily ban flights from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Eswatini after a new Covid variant the B.1.1.529 was detected in these countries.

Even though only 60 cases have been reported, scientists are concerned by its high number of mutations which could help it evade the body's immune response and make it more transmissible.

New Covid variant: Israel imposes travel ban on passengers from most of Africa

Six COVID-19&nbsp;cases were reported from three cities in China in a day, triggering fresh concerns of another coronavirus outbreak.

The new cases have caused alarm as China’s strict zero-Covid policy had so far kept the highly-mutating virus at bay for a brief period of time.

In Shanghai, three women tested positive on Thursday morning, according to the local government.

The three of them travelled together to the neighbouring Suzhou city last weekend, where they dined with two men from Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, the South China Morning Post&nbsp;reported.

The two men, who were classified as close contacts, also tested positive on Thursday evening.

With the emergence of new coronavirus variant on mind, Indian government has issued an advisory to all states to rigorously test and screen international travellers from South Africa and other "at risk" countries. &nbsp;&nbsp;

China's emissions fell dramatically in early 2020 due to sweeping quarantines aimed at curbing the coronavirus, then rebounded to higher than 2019 monthly levels as cities and factories reopened.

The decline was caused by a construction slump after Beijing cracked down on speculation and debt in the real estate sector,&nbsp;as well as high coal prices that resulted in power rationing across the country, Myllyvirta said.

"The drop in emissions could mark a turning point and an early peak in&nbsp;China’s emissions total, years ahead of its target to peak before 2030," Myllyvirta said in his report.

But he warned that "if the Chinese government injects further construction stimulus to boost its economy, emissions could rebound once again, before peaking later this decade."

While the coal crisis was "caused by ballooning coal consumption and price control policies," the perception within the country that the transition to cleaner energy was to blame could make Beijing hesitant to strengthen climate targets until the coal crisis is fully resolved, Myllyvirta added.

He further suggested that it may have evolved during chronic infection in a person with a weakened immune system. The person could possibly be an untreated HIV/Aids patient.

Currently, there are no cases of the B.1.1.529 variant in the UK. However, the officials at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said that they were monitoring the variant.&nbsp;

Ivermectin is a generic drug that has been used for decades to treat river blindness, scabies and even head lice. Veterinarians also use it, in different formulations and dosages, to treat animals for parasites like worms.

After the pandemic began, some countries started prescribing the medicine to treat Covid. Among them was former US president Donald Trump and his Brazilian counterpart Jair Bolsonaro.

However, several scientists later undertook research to find whether ivermectin treats Covid. It was later found to be false.

United States Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) also recommend not using ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19 saying that there is no evidence the drug protects or cures patients.

New Zealand will be reopening its border to the fully vaccinated foreigners from next year, the country’s Covid response minister Chris Hipkins has said.
