With the addition of fresh cases, the number of active coronavirus cases increased to 65,683, said the Union health ministry on Monday. Meanwhile, the daily positivity rate was registered at 9.16 per cent.

The death toll because of COVID-19 has surged to 5,31,345, with 16 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the data of the ministry which is updated at 8 am IST.

The 65,683 active cases currently comprise 0.15 per cent of the total COVID-19 cases. The health ministry's website stated that officials have recorded the national COVID-19 recovery rate at 98.67 per cent.

The number of patients who recuperated from the virus increased to 4,43,01,865, while the fatality rate of coronavirus cases was recorded at 1.18 per cent.

As per the ministry's website, the government has so far administered 220.66 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines under the nationwide vaccination drive.

On Sunday, the national capital logged 948 fresh COVID-19 infections and two fatalities, recording a positivity rate of 25.69, as per the data shared by the health department.

With the addition of new fatalities due to the virus, the death toll due to coronavirus in the national capital rose to 26,597. The total death tally currently stands at 20,33,372.

On Sunday, Maharashtra recorded 545 fresh coronavirus cases and two deaths, said the health department. After the fresh cases, the COVID-19 tally of the state rose to 81,61,894 and the death toll increased to 1,48,504.

Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan had written to eight states, in the wake of rising coronavirus cases, to increase surveillance measures and develop hospital infrastructure.

In the letter to Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Haryana and Karnataka, Bhushan emphasised that the pandemic will not be over in the near future and hence, controlling the spread of the virus is important.

With a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases, scientists stated that the variant “XBB.1.16” is responsible for an increase in cases. However, they added that vaccination and natural infection have helped people develop hybrid immunity in India.

Hence, the present surge in coronavirus cases due to the variant XBB.1.16 will not overwhelm hospitals and lead to a critical situation as the infection is mild in nature.

However, people have been advised by the government to wear masks, adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour and complete their pending vaccination doses, if any.&nbsp;

The head of China's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Saturday urged the World Health Organization (WHO) to return to a "scientific, fair" position in tracing the origin of COVID-19.&nbsp;Speaking at a news conference, Shen Hongbing, the China CDC head warned the global health body against politicising the source of the COVID-19 virus or becoming a tool of another country. This comes as a&nbsp;team of Chinese researchers published a long-awaited analysis of samples collected more than three years ago from the Huanan seafood and wildlife market, which is often linked to the outbreak of the deadly Covid-19 virus and the resulting pandemic. BBC reports that this is the first peer-reviewed study of the biological evidence gathered from the Huanan market in 2020.

As per the report, the research has revealed that swabs from the market which tested positive for coronavirus also contained genetic material from wild animals. Some scientists claim that this is further evidence that the deadly disease jumped species, from animals and into humans.

By linking the virus to the market's animals, this research could potentially open new lines of inquiry into Covid origins, reports BBC.

Reportedly, the Chinese team had posted online an early version of the study back in February 2022. But they waited till recently to publish full genetic information that was contained in the samples gathered from the market.

On March 1, FBI director Christopher Wray even accused China of "doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate", and revealed that his bureau had been convinced of the lab leak theory "for quite some time now". However, the FBI has not made any of its findings public. Beijing continues to deny suggestions that the COVID-19 virus originated in a scientific facility.

New Covid variant identified in Israel. Here's all you need to know

World Health Organization (WHO) is updating how it tracks and names Covid variants. As per a statement posted on the international health body's website, it will be updating the working definitions for variants of COVID-19, causing SARS-CoV-2. This is being done to "better correspond to the current global variant landscape, to independently evaluate Omicron sublineages in circulation, and classify new variants more clearly when required."

As per the WHO, Omicron is the "most divergent VOC (Variant Of Concern) seen to date."

Even after three years of the pandemic, the coronavirus continues to mutate. As per WHO, "The Omicron viruses have continued to evolve genetically and antigenically with an expanding range of sublineages."

Until now, all Omicron sublineages have been classified as part of the Omicron VOC and "thus did not have the granularity needed to compare new descendent lineages with altered phenotypes to the Omicron parent lineages."

Starting Wednesday (March 15), WHO will classify Omicron sublineages independently as Variant&nbsp;Under Monitoring (VUM), Variant Of Interest (VOI), and Variant Of Concern (VOC).

The health agency will also update the working definition of VOC&nbsp;and VOI, making the former&nbsp;definitions more specific to include major SARS-CoV-2 evolutionary steps that require major public health interventions.

Additionally, going forward, Greek alphabets will be assigned to coronavirus VOCs, while for VOIs they will no longer be used.&nbsp;"With these changes factored in, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, as well as the Omicron parent lineage (B.1.1.529), are considered previously circulating VOCs. WHO has now classified XBB.1.5 as a VOI," said WHO in its statement.&nbsp;

The letter signed by 200 leaders marks the three-year anniversary since the dangerous Covid crisis was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Criticising the "glaring inequity" that served as a huge drawback in the pandemic response, they said, "We ask world leaders to pledge 'never again'."&nbsp;

"There are decades of publicly funded research behind Covid-19 vaccines, treatments and tests," said the letter, adding that, "Governments have poured taxpayer money by the billions into research, development and advance orders, reducing the risks for pharmaceutical companies."

Insisting that these "are the people's vaccines, the people's tests and the people's treatments," it alleges that "instead of rolling out vaccines, tests and treatments based on need, pharmaceutical companies maximised their profits by selling doses first to the richest countries with the deepest pockets".

A study from last year showed that if in 2021, the vaccines had been distributed equitably, lives amounting to "one preventable death every 24 seconds" or that of approximately 1.3 million people could've been saved.&nbsp;

Citing this study, the letter urged leaders and governments to support the ongoing international accord towards a pandemic accord.

As per an AFP report, the open letter was coordinated by the NGO coalition People's Vaccine Alliance.&nbsp;

Signatories consist of both current and former officials like 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner Timor-Leste President Jose Manuel Ramos-Horta, along with several other Nobel laureates, faith leaders, and former United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon. A range of current and former UN agency heads and former leaders of more than 40 countries were also among those who signed the letter.

"This wind-down would align with the Administration's previous commitments to give at least 60 days' notice prior to termination of the PHE," OMB said in an administration policy statement.

PHE's expiration will also end directives, known as Title 42, that expel migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba and Haiti caught crossing the US-Mexico border back to Mexico, OMB said.

As per the announcement, the work would “prevent misleading the public and causing social panic”.

The social media platform is filled with personal stories of citizens who had contracted Covid, their struggle to source healthcare or medication, or their loss of close ones due to the disease.&nbsp;

As per the health officials, the wave of current infections has peaked, however, they further warned that the infections may spread further in the wake of millions of people travelling across the country during the lunar new year.&nbsp;

Independent forecaster Airfinity on Thursday stated that the new modelling has increased estimates of fatalities and infections in China.&nbsp;

China's "Zero-COVID policy" and a severe property market downturn last year hurt domestic economic activity and weighed on global supply chains already disrupted by the pandemic.

While Beijing abruptly lifted all those stringent pandemic restrictions in early December, it led to a surge in infections, which economists say would likely hamper growth in the near term.

But Redmond Wong, Greater China market strategist at Saxo Markets Hong Kong, told Reuters, "I think investors will look through the Q4 GDP prints and focus on 2023".

There are questions about how the alarming mortality toll — officially at 60,000 in the past month or so — will affect broader consumer confidence. Supply chain disruptions caused by workers reporting sick may hinder the recovery and impact nations that depend heavily on Chinese imports.

With real estate prices still declining and expected to do so this year, the health of the massive property market debt-ridden property developers will pose another risk to economic recovery.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin on Tuesday rescinded the COVID-19 mandate bill that, as per the Pentagon, had led to the discharge of over 8,000 military personnel for refusal to comply. Scrapping the mandate, Austin in a memo wrote he was&nbsp;"deeply proud" of the Defense Department's efforts to combat the coronavirus adding that, "we have improved the health of our service members and the readiness of the force, and we have provided life-saving assistance to the American people."

He added that the department, however, would keep encouraging personnel to get vaccinated. Addressing commanders, the memo said they have "the responsibility and authority to preserve the department's compelling interests in mission accomplishment."

“This control on arrival is not a control to prevent citizens entering our territory but a more scientific control which will allow us very precisely to check different variants,” said Braun, as per AFP.&nbsp;

"Much of the mildness we've experienced over the past six to 12 months in many parts of the world has been due to accumulated immunity either through vaccination or infection, not because the virus has changed" in severity, says Ray.

Wenhong added that the wave will last another one or two months after that and that "We must be mentally prepared that infection is inevitable."

Other experts too have warned that China will be hit with "waves" of infection. As per the estimates of one Chinese expert, this winter will see three consecutive waves of infections.

Faced with a huge surge in cases following its easing of stringent zero-Covid restrictions, cities in China have also begun distributing free fever and cold drugs to the public, in order to deal with a spike in demand for the medicines.

China accepts Germany's mRNA COVID vaccines as cases spike, distributes free fever, cold medicines

Just a week back,&nbsp;WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had expressed hope that the COVID-19 emergency might be ending, turns out "the end is (not) in sight". Speaking to BBC, epidemiologist Wu Zunyou has warned that China might experience three waves of Covid infection this winter. As per his estimates, the current spike might continue till mid-January, a second spike can happen around the Lunar New Year celebrations that begin on January 21, and the third wave could happen between late February and mid-March when people return to the office.

Last week the city&nbsp;also scrapped a mandatory Covid mobile application that was required to check in to most venues such as gyms, beauty salons and schools.

Speaking to BBC epidemiologist Wu Zunyou has warned that the nation might undergo three waves of infection this winter. With the neighbouring Chinese territory of Macau offering these mRNA vaccines, people are scrambling to get the jab. As a consequence, no bookings are available until January 21.&nbsp;

As the third anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic approaches, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday said that it hoped that the virus would no longer be a public health emergency next year.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said "we have come a long way", and the death toll from Covid is now a fifth of what it was a year ago. However, he added that even that is too much.

"Last week, less than 10,000 people lost their lives. That's still 10,000 too many and there is still a lot that all countries can do to save lives," he said, adding, "we are hopeful that at some point next year, we will be able to say that Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency."

A meeting of the WHO emergency committee that advises Tedros on whether a virus constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) will discuss the criteria for ending the coronavirus emergency phase.

Hong Kong has announced the lifting of its "amber code" which means that it will no longer require its residents to use its "LeaveHomeSafe" app to enter venues.

Additionally, the much criticised "0+3" regime will also be taken away. Under&nbsp;this&nbsp;travellers were given an amber code on Hong Kong's&nbsp;app, which restricted their movement and they had to undergo a three-day medical surveillance period.
