UK recorded the highest daily death toll of 381, an increase of twenty-nine per cent as the coronavirus continued to ravage to the country. A 13-year-old boy was among the casualty who died at King's College Hospital in London.

Meanwhile, songwriter-singer Adam Schlesinger has been hospitalised in New York after he contracted the viral infection.

Shorr took to Twitter on Monday to announce that she had tested positive. "Despite being quarantined (except for a handful of trips for groceries) for three weeks, I managed to contract COVID 19. I`m feeling significantly better, but it`s proof how dangerous and contagious this is. It`s endlessly frustrating to see people not taking this seriously," she tweeted.

"The first few days were absolutely miserable. I`ve never felt like that before. My entire body was in pain, and my fever was like riding a wave. I completely lost my sense of taste and smell," another tweet from the 25-year-old singer said.

Prominent Muslim body Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Wednesday slammed the "communalisation" of the sharp rise in coronavirus cases and linking them to a Tablighi Jamaat gathering in Delhi's Nizamuddin area and asserted that this would harm the united fight against the pandemic.

Jamiat president Maulana Arshad Madani hit out at the "negative propaganda" in the media on the Jamaat Markaz (headquarters), saying it is deeply condemnable to give this fight a religious colour.

Madani said in a statement that with the sudden announcement of the lockdown on March 24, millions of people were "trapped" across the country and were trying to return to their homes.

"So in those situations, if some people get locked up in the markaz, we think that there is no such thing as breaking the law," the Jamiat chief said.

Announcing the lockdown, the prime minister had said one must stay wherever he is, and not come out, Madani said.

"There are reports that the markaz had informed, in writing, the concerned authorities and agencies, and even permission was sought for people to send them to their homes, so the markaz cannot be blamed in this regard," Madani said.

"In this situation, the media of the country is making a dangerous conspiracy to mislead the people by presenting only one side of the picture," he said.

The sectarian mindset and communalisation of the cases is a bigger threat than the virus, the maulana said.

The central and state governments should not only take notice of it but condemn the propaganda against Muslims, he said.

"Such propaganda would damage communal harmony in the country, as the people unitedly are fighting a strong war against the epidemic," he said.

Madani also said that during and after the Tablighi Jamaat programme, a larger number of religious and non-religious events took place in every corner of the country under the patronage of politicians.

"Therefore, if an FIR can be filed against Nizamuddin's office, then there should be an FIR against the central and state government officials who could not manage properly millions of workers gathered at Anand Vihar railway station and other places after the lockdown order," he said.

India registered 386 new cases of COVID-19 in last 24 hours, taking the tally to 1,637 in the country, the government said on Wednesday, and linked the sharp increase in number of cases to the Tablighi meet since early March at Nizamuddin which has become the new epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country --from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu.

Communalisation of Nizamuddin gathering will harm united fight against COVID-19: Jamiat chief

New Zealand on Wednesday reported 61 new cases of the coronavirus, but said it was too early to assess if the lower number of cases this week meant the nationwide lockdown measures were working.

The country was placed into a complete lockdown last Thursday, and a national emergency was declared, to beat the local transmission of COVID-19.

Offices and schools were shut and all non-essential services, bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms, cinemas, pools, museums, libraries and playgrounds were closed.

The government on Wednesday said there were 61 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours taking the total to 708.

The number of new COVID-19 cases was as high as 85 last week, but has stayed lower this week. More than half of the cases was related to overseas travel and community transmission cases were about 1%.

"While on the face of it that might seem a heartening number relative to some of the other figures we have had now, I want to emphasize it`s too early to assess if our measures are successfully slowing COVID-19," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a news conference.

Among all the confirmed cases, 82 people have recovered, and so far only one death has been recorded.

New Zealand, with about 5 million people, has fewer infections than many other countries, like neighbouring Australia, where the number of cases now exceeds 4,500 with 20 deaths.

Ardern has said she wants to see more testing as it was needed to stamp out the virus and guard against community transmission.

"If virus is in the community in this way... then worst thing we can do is to relax and be complacent, and allow the silent spread," Ardern added.

QUANTUM SHOCK

Finance Minister Grant Robertson told a parliamentary committee earlier in the day that he expected a quantum economic shock from COVID-19 that would be greater than the global financial crisis.

He said the treasury department was expecting unemployment rates to likely be worse than that of the global financial crisis where it peaked at 6.7%. The treasury said initial projections show unemployment could increase from between 5% to well into double digits, while GDP reductions could be anywhere between 10-17%.

Banks have forecasted unemployment rates to increase by up to 30%, Robertson told the committee.

He said the government will still be going ahead with the May release of its annual budget, but its focus would be different.

Italy mourns coronavirus victims as death toll rises above 12,000

The United States recorded 865 new deaths in just 24 hours due the coronavirus epidemic with the number of confirmed cases surging to 188,547, according to Johns Hopkins coronavirus resource centre.

US records highest death toll due to coronavirus

The epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak has swiftly shifted to Italy, with 77,635 confirmed cases and over 12,000 deaths. While the government has been into a decisive action over the increasing number of cases, the Indian High Commission in Rome and the Indian community have played a important role as well in helping people out.

Indian envoy to Italy Reenat Sandhu, while speaking exclusively to Wion's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal said the Indian mission was ensuring "well-being and safety" of the Indian community and the Indian diplomats were putting "in our best despite the limitations."

Excerpts from the interview:

Sidhant Sibal: What is the situation in Italy?

Reenat Sandhu: Italy has taken a number of strong measures in quick succession to contain the virus. Starting with 11 municipalities and 50,000 people in quarantine on February 23, the coverage of the measures has been extended -- first to the Lombardy region and 14 provinces in north Italy on March 8, and then to a lockdown of the entire country on March 10. Through all these measures, the effort has been to restrict movement of people and stop community transmission. Since March 11, all non-essential commercial activities have also been suspended, keeping essential services like food stores and pharmacies open. Production activities in sectors considered essential like banking, postal and financial services, logistics and transport, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, and energy and agro-industry continue to be operational.

As far as the numbers are concerned, while the total number of positive cases continues to be big, we are seeing an encouraging downward trend in the new cases reported over last couple of days. We are seeing a plateau and we hope that, as projected by the scientific community, Italy’s figures will soon reach a peak and be able to turn the curve.

Sidhant Sibal: How are you helping the Indians in Italy? Are you roping in the help of Indian community?

Reenat Sandhu: This has been our number one priority. Right from the start of this crisis in Italy, the embassy has been in close touch with various groups of Indian community to ensure their well-being and safety.

Several innovative strategies have been adopted to address concerns of specific groups. This includes data gathering for targetted messaging and taking the help of the local community support groups in various parts of Italy to assist Indian nationals in distress. A few local Indian NGOs have been helping, along with the local Gurudwaras which are providing free food in many areas. Some Indian restaurants have stepped forward to support stranded Indians. On certain occasions, we have also extended assistance in the form of providing accommodation and food to students who did not have the means. We have been using social media quite effectively for messaging and four helpline numbers are operational 24X7 to support the community.

The Italian government has ensured that essential supplies and services like food stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, public transport, banks and local police headquarters remain are open. Their only advise is that people should go out for essential work only, like buying groceries and maintain a safe distance of at least one meter from others. There are several support measures in the form of a helpline number of the Italian Health Service for those who have any health concerns. We have been regularly advising Indian nationals about these facilities which are available.

Sidhant Sibal: How the coordination efforts with various agencies have been?

Reenat Sandhu: During this entire period, we have worked closely with the Italian government authorities, including the Foreign Ministry and health officials, who have extended full cooperation and support. Thanks to them, we could undertake the task of medical testing of over 300 students by a team of Indian doctors despite a lockdown of the city, and ultimately facilitate their return. We have also relied heavily on, and received full support from, the Government of India especially the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Health. We are grateful to everyone for their encouragement and support, which has helped our entire team at the Embassy to remain motivated and enthusiastic and to put in our best despite the limitations.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said the COVID-19 pandemic is the most challenging crisis since the Second World War as it represents a threat to everybody.

“The pandemic represents a threat to everybody in the world and it has an economic impact that will bring a recession that probably has no parallel in the recent past," Guterres said on Tuesday at the virtual press launch of the UN report "Shared responsibility, global solidarity: Responding to the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19,” Xinhua news agency quoted Guterres as saying.

He added, “The combination of the two facts and the risk that it contributes to enhanced instability, enhanced unrest, and enhanced conflict are things that make us believe that this is, indeed, the most challenging crisis we have faced since the Second World War and the one that needs a stronger and more effective response that is only possible in solidarity if everybody comes together and if we forget political games and understand that it is humankind that is at stake.”

But when the coronavirus infection hit Greece, he and his partner Dimitrios Moustakas realized they needed to apply their technology elsewhere in order to find a swift solution to shortages in the medical sector. They are now producing plastic face and eye shields using 3d printing techniques for Greece's doctors and hospital staff.

Bangladesh, the second-largest apparel producer after China, is set to lose roughly $6 billion in export revenue this financial year amid cancellations from some of the world's largest brands and retailers, two major industry bodies said on Tuesday.

The two groups, which represent the vast majority of the readymade garment and knitwear manufacturers in the country, said cancellations were increasing daily amid coronavirus-driven lockdowns globally, and these risked jeopardizing millions of jobs in the poor South Asian nation.

Low wages have helped Bangladesh build its garment industry, with some 4,000 factories employing 4 million workers.

Garment exports accounted for $34.1 billion or 84 per cent of the country's overall exports in the fiscal year through June 2019.

"We've lost more than $3 billion due to the crisis. All our orders until July have been cancelled or suspended," Mohammad Hatem, vice president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), said.

"Suspended orders will eventually get cancelled. All these orders were placed for summer and it takes three months to get these delivered. If they are not taking supplies now they will not take it when the summer is over," said Hatem. "...Many factories will be closed if this persists."

One industry source, who asked not to be identified, said Gap, Zara and Primark were among the brands that had cancelled orders. Gap and Zara did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment. Primark confirmed the step.

All Primark stores were closed and the brand had been losing sales of $807.82 million a month, it said in a statement.

"We have large quantities of existing stock in our stores, our depots and in transit that is paid for", the statement said. "If we had not taken this action, we would be taking delivery of stock that we simply could not sell".

Readymade garment makers face a similar hit, warned Rubana Huq, the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Huq said some 1,048 factories that were part of BGMEA had reported that orders for over 900 million garments worth $2.9 billion had already been cancelled or were being held up.

H&M said that while it had earlier paused placing new orders, it had not cancelled any orders already placed. It would pay as agreed for goods ordered, it said in an email.

"The substantial drop in global demand has a significant impact on our order placement at suppliers," it however cautioned. "We are placing orders based on current forecasts and will continue to evaluate the situation on a daily basis."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently unveiled a $588 million package for the country's crucial export sector, asking companies to put the money towards paying workers.

"This is not enough. The government should come up with more stimulus to save the country's biggest export sector," said Rezwan Selim, a director of BGMEA.

Siddiqur Rahman, a top exporter who supplies H&M and Walmart among others, said the situation was dire.

"We're facing an unprecedented time," he said. "No one knows how long this is going to take. We're trying hard not to shut down our factories. But how long can we hold out?"

Chinese health authorities have begun reporting on asymptomatic cases of coronavirus as part of an effort to assure people they are not spreading the virus without knowing they are infected with it. It revealed the presence of 1,541 asymptomatic cases carrying the deadly novel coronavirus, raising concerns of a second wave of infections amid the relaxation of stringent measures in the country initiated to contain the deadly disease.

For the unversed, the first cases of coronavirus were observed in the wet city of Wuhan. The virus then spread far and wide and made Europe, primarily Italy, its epicentre, while China managed to bring its outbreak under control and has since been easing travel restrictions in virus hot spots. China has had more than 81,000 cases of the coronavirus and 3,305 deaths.

But there are concerns that the end of lockdowns will see thousands of infectious people move back into daily life without knowing they carry the virus, because they have no symptoms and so have not been tested.

There is, however, debate among experts about how infectious asymptomatic cases are but the commission has said all cases would be centrally quarantined for 14 days. Up to now, the number of known asymptomatic cases has been classified, and it is not included in the official data.

The government, in order to allay people's fears, ordered health authorities to turn their attention to finding asymptomatic cases and releasing their data on them.

A total of 1,541 asymptomatic patients infected with COVID-19 have been put under medical observation in China by the end of Monday, including 205 imported cases, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the NHC in a statement.

Besides the asymptomatic cases, there are reports of 35 new imported cases.

To this end, sports bodies have been banned from organising events that will draw large crowds until further notice.

In addition, numerous events have been cancelled or postponed in China since the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan in January.

The World Indoor Athletic Championships, which were due to be held in Nanjing in March, have been postponed until next year while national leagues, such as the country`s football and basketball competitions, have yet to commence their season or are currently suspended.

Meanwhile, China on Tuesday reported 36 new cases of coronavirus -- down from 48 a day earlier. Then on Wednesday, the country reported a fall in the new cases, with almost all cases imported from overseas.

All but one of the cases were imported, bringing the total number of imported cases to 806.

Another 130 asymptomatic cases were reported, with a total of 1,367 such cases under observation as of March 31.

There was one reported new case of a local infection, in Guangdong province.

China fears second wave of coronavirus infections, reports on asymptomatic cases

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week imposed a pan-India 21-day lockdown in view of the spike in coronavirus cases. While the move has been touted as a very intelligent and proactive measure on India's part, it's ill-effects are also nagging the Indian government.

One of them is a severe shortage of labour -- which stands to hobble harvesting of winter crops in the world's second largest producer of staple foodgrains such as wheat.

India has forecast wheat output at a record 106.21 million tonnes this year, and farmers are likely to produce 7.8 million tonnes of rapeseed. But this stands questionable in the face of shortage of manpower.

The farms in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh rely on labourers from eastern India, but most of them returned home to their villages after the lockdown began on March 24, fearing the virus and facing wage disruptions.

Thousands of farmers are now worried about the unprecedented labour shortage that will make it tougher to get mechanical harvesters to fields or even pluck by hand crops expected to mature in mid-April.

Late harvests mean lower yields, reduced returns, and a smaller window to plant next season's crops, besides leaving crops vulnerable to rain and hailstorms.

Even if farmers somehow manage to bring in the harvest, they next face the struggle of taking produce to market, with few trucks available to carry large volumes.

The labour shortage would also severely cripple wholesale markets and even bring them to a grinding halt. Besides farmers of wheat and rapeseed, vegetable and horticulture growers will also struggle to sell their produce.

India's coronavirus tally now stands 1,251 infections with 32 deaths from the virus, which has caused nearly 800,000 cases worldwide, with more than 38,800 deaths.

Tesla has planned to supply FDA-approved ventilators free of cost to hospitals within regions where the electric car maker delivers.

In addition to this, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also announced that he and his companies have access to additional FDA-approved ventilators.

The need for additional ventilators has taken centre stage in the ongoing fight against the spread of coronavirus and the ventilator has become a critical first line of defense for patients infected by the virus.

Also, the Unites States has stopped importing N95 respirators from China.

"We have extra FDA-approved ventilators. Will ship to hospitals worldwide within Tesla delivery regions. Device and shipping cost are free. Only requirement is that the vents are needed immediately for patients, not stored in a warehouse. Please or @Tesla know," Musk tweeted on Tuesday.

Musk also said the company's Gigafactory facility in New York would soon reopen to begin producing ventilators that are in short supply due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Musk had offered 1,255 ventilators for free to help fight COVID-19 pandemic. He has also donated 50,000 N95 surgical masks and various protective items to a hospital in the US.

Musk had offered 1,255 ventilators for free to help fight COVID-19 pandemic. He has also donated 50,000 N95 surgical masks and various protective items to a hospital in the US.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, in his recent address to his nation, praised China — the country which has been held responsible by world over for unleashing coronavirus on the planet. Khan said China tackled the deadly virus well by ‘locking down 2 crore people’.

In the same address, Imran Khan audaciously berated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for imposing a 21-day pan-India lockdown in order to stem the growth the virus. He said PM Modi “apologised for announcing lockdown without any preparations.”

The Prime Minister’s Office also put this out on Twitter. “We can see the consequences of India's hasty decision of imposing a complete lockdown. Their government had to apologise for their unplanned decision .We must learn and fight this pandemic with wisdom and not in haste,” Pakistan PMO wrote the micro-blogging site.

Pak PM Imran Khan says they will use 'wisdom' to beat coronavirus, taunts PM Modi for lockdown

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg yesterday announced a $100 million support package for journalists who are suffering owing to the coronavirus induced lockdowns.

Zuckerberg has pledged help to local news outlets, and has promised an additional $25 million through the Facebook Journalism Project. Furthermore, $75 million have been sanctioned to assist journalists in marketing during the pandemic.

“As part of our efforts to support the news ecosystem and make sure everyone has access to accurate and timely information, we’re investing $100 million in new funds to support journalists, especially focused on local news,” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.

“Right now journalists are working under very difficult conditions to keep their communities informed and many news organizations are struggling due to the economic impact of the outbreak,” Zuckerberg added.

“Local news is especially hard hit, so we’re committing $25 million for emergency grant funding through the Facebook Journalism Project and another $75 million in marketing spend to support journalists and news organizations covering the crisis”, he added.

“This new emergency program is in addition to the $300 million we’ve committed to supporting news and local news in particular, over the next few years. We’re hoping this will support many journalists through this period so they can continue doing their critical work of keeping all of us informed,” Zuckerberg further said.

Besides helping journalists, Facebook has initiated other projects to assist the war against coronavirus. These include a $100 million programme which includes cash grants and advertising credits to assist small businesses that are suffering.

Additionally, within its operations, the company has given a $1000 bonus to 45,000 employees to provide assistance during the pandemic.

The aim of the programme is to assist journalists in carrying out their jobs during a precarious situation, as echoed by Campbell Brown, the Vice President of Facebook Global News Partnerships.

“We’re building on this work and will direct a portion of these funds to publishers most in need in the hardest hit countries. The first round of these grants went to 50 local newsrooms in the US and Canada,” Brown wrote.

“If people needed more proof that local journalism is a vital public service, they’re getting it now. And while almost all businesses are facing adverse financial effects from this crisis, we recognise we’re in a more privileged position than most and we want to help,” Brown wrote.

Given the nature of COVID-19, healthcare workers, emergency responders, and journalists come in direct contact with people carrying the disease. This poses a health risk, so it makes sense why Facebook would help out the media fraternity. It also echoes the company's newly found interest in news curation.

Facebook pledges $100 million to support news outlets suffering due to COVID-19 pandemic

The United Nations Trade and Development body (UNCTAD) announced that developing countries which garner most of their money through exports are not set to face losses between $2 to $3 billion as the COVID-19 pandemic limits investment from countries over the next two years.

In light of this, the UNCTAD yesterday claimed that such countries will require a $2.5 trillion package to avert catastrophic socio-economic impact.

Even before the pandemic’s fury reached developing countries, an economic slowdown had been emerging since the last quarter of 2019, right before the first case was discovered in China, suggested Richard Kozul-Wright, the director of globalisation and development strategies at the UNCTAD.

“The health crisis is still to come in many developing countries,” he told UN News.

“Now, if that crisis comes as these countries have been significantly weakened by the economic shockwaves from the crisis. And that is a…very vicious combination of an economic crisis and a health crisis. So we’ve got to find ways of strengthening the healthcare system and services in developing countries and building up resilience on that front very quickly”, Wright added.

Affluent countries with large-scale industries recently announced a $5 trillion global rescue package to protect the economies from crashing in the light of the pandemic which has shut down societies all over the world.

This may be able to help soften the blow “physically, economically and psychologically” - said Kozul-Wright.

Among G20 countries, a demand worth $1-2 trillion is expected to surface. This, in turn, will boost the manufacturing industry globally by two per cent.

China and India to manage?

“Even so, the world economy will go into recession this year with a predicted loss of global income in the trillions of dollars - this will spell serious trouble for developing countries, with the likely exception of China and the possible exception of India”, Kozul-Wright warned.

As witnessed by the mass exodus of migrant labourers triggered in India due to a lockdown, most developing countries have such workers in the informal sector forming the backbone of emerging economies.

UN suggests plan

The UNCTAD suggests a four-point recovery plan to avoid “a looming financial tsunami”. For this, an initial $1 trillion investment has been called for.

Additionally, the aid required right now would need an extra push, way more than the allocated amount during the 2009 financial crisis.

How much aid do developing countries need to ride out the COVID-19 wave?

As the coronavirus pandemic rips through communities and disrupts the flow of supplies across the world, many people have been left in the lurch.

With strictly enforced lockdowns in place around the world, people who may be positive but asymptomatic have no way to know if they’re carrying the virus. Most countries are limiting their testing to symptomatic patients to fast-track critical cases, and have advised minor cases to stay at home.

Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) has come up with an interesting approach to tackle this testing and diagnosis issue.

According to health services, a smartphone application to help trace potential contact will be unveiled in the next ten days.

Fuelled by Bluetooth technology, the app will detect and notify when devices come in close contact with each other.

It doesn’t sound like much. But… if a person tests positive for COVID-19, then based on the data log, people who have come in contact with the patient may be traced and quarantined.

Reported first by Business Post, the application has been described as “a cross-government effort in relation to a very important piece of technology” in countering the pandemic.

Speaking at a HSE media briefing today, HSE head of communications Paul Connors said the app is “a cross-government effort in relation to a very important piece of technology” in fighting the pandemic.

Additionally, the application has a feedback mechanism to track the general state of the potential infected people. “That [information] will be fed back in for epidemiological assessment as we go on”, he added.

Even though this app could help trace and tackle cases more effectively, the risks embedded into any application still linger. To deal with this, the app must be compliant with privacy and data protection laws as per global standards.

This is contingent on where the data is stored, the exact nature of information being stored, and whether the users remain anonymous. Another pertinent question that pops up is: who will have access to this data?

Ireland to roll out application that can track potential coronavirus cases

COVID-19 has struck the entire world, especially Europe, with a stunning ferocity. Almost every country the pandemic has hit is under a partial or full lockdown, impacting not only their economy but that of the world’s too.

Experts have predicted the world economy would go into recession this year with a predicted loss of trillions of dollars of global income, spelling serious trouble for developing countries. The likely exception may be India and China, according to a latest UN trade report.

With two-thirds of the world's population living in developing countries facing unprecedented economic damage from the COVID-19 crisis, the UN is calling for a USD 2.5 trillion rescue package for these nations.

According to the new analysis from United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN trade and development body titled 'The COVID-19 Shock to Developing Countries: Towards a 'whatever it takes' programme for the two-thirds of the world's population being left behind', commodity-rich exporting countries will face a USD 2 trillion to USD 3 trillion drop in investments from overseas in the next two years.

The UNCTAD said that in recent days, advanced economies and China have put together massive government packages which, according to the Group of 20 leading economies (G20), will extend a USD 5 trillion lifeline to their economies.

"Even so, the world economy will go into recession this year with a predicted loss of global income in trillions of dollars. This will spell serious trouble for developing countries, with the likely exception of China and the possible exception of India," the UNCTAD said.

The report, however, did not give a detailed explanation as to why and how India and China will be the exceptions as the world faces a recession and loss in global income that will impact developing countries.

Meanwhile, the World Bank has warned that the coronavirus pandemic's economic fallout could cause China's growth to come to a virtual standstill and drive 11 million more people in East Asia into poverty.

Even in the best-case scenario, the region will see a sharp slowdown, with China's growth slowing to 2.3 per cent from 6.1 per cent in 2019, according to a World Bank report on the pandemic's impact on the region.

Under a worse-case scenario, the region could suffer its sharpest downturn since a devastating currency crisis more than two decades ago. The bank's report projects that growth in the region would slow to 2.1 per cent this year from 5.8 per cent in 2019 under a "baseline" forecast in which economic recovery takes hold this summer.

More than 11 million people could fall into poverty in the region under the worse-case scenario, the bank estimates. That's in stark contrast to its earlier forecast that growth would be sufficient this year to lift 35 million people out of poverty.

The World Bank has pledged to provide USD 14 billion in financial support through a fast-track package to strengthen the response of developing countries to the virus and expects to deploy up to USD 160 billion over the next 15 months to protect the poor and vulnerable.

The IMF has said it will commit if needed its full USD 1 trillion in lending resources to support nations hit by the virus.

Talking of India, its shares edged up on Tuesday, tracking broader Asian peers, as unexpected upbeat factory data from China provided hope of a rebound in activity despite a spike in coronavirus cases back home.

The broader NSE Nifty 50 index was up 2.22% at 84,65.20, as of 0345 GMT, and the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex rose 2.11% to 29,040.39.

MSCI`s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 1.1% after China`s official manufacturing purchasing managers` index (PMI) bounced to 52.0 in March, up from a record-low 35.7 in February.

India reported 1,251 confirmed coronavirus cases by Monday evening, up 227 from the previous day, its steepest single-day rise.

The government, however, said it had no plans to extend the 21-day lockdown that began last week.

According to global reports, the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has soared past 35,000 while the number of confirmed cases topped 7,50,000 globally.

Can India and China become possible exceptions in face of global recession stemming out of coronavirus lockdown?

Australia reported a considerable fall in the rate of novel coronavirus infection on Tuesday. There were about 4,400 coronavirus cases in Australia — with the rate of growth in new infections slowing from 25-30 per cent a week ago to an average of 9 per cent over the past three days.

Of those, Health Minister Greg Hunt said, 50 people were in intensive care and 20 were on ventilators, Hunt said. The death toll stood at 19.

The death rate for Australian cases was below 1 per cent, significantly under the 10 per cent being reported by some other countries and suggesting "early promising signs of the curve flattening.”

Still, Hunt stressed, it was too early for Australians to breathe a sigh of relief and the new social distancing measures were crucial. He also urged people not to become complacent and stressed the need for further strict social distancing policies.

State officials had earlier warned that the slowing infection rate might have have more to do with fluctuations in testing numbers, given there was less access to doctors over the weekend.

Public health orders enacted on Tuesday vary from state to state but generally include penalties of some kind for people flouting rules.

The death toll in New South Wales, the country’s most populous state, stands at 19. The punishment for breaking the lockdown rules is fine of up to A$11,000 ($6,779) in NSW and the potential of a six-month prison term for anybody found breaching the rules.

In Western Australia state, people who ignore self-isolating orders could be fitted with an electronic tracking device.

Meanwhile, Australia's financial and jobs markets have been deeply impacted by COVID-19, prompting the government to unveil several stimulus packages. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a tweet on Tuesday that 113,000 businesses had registered interest in a new A$130 billion ($80 billion) six-month wage subsidy.

Economists have hence predicted the country’s first recession in almost three decades due to the coronavirus stimulus packages.
