China's decision to lock down the city of Wuhan, ground zero for the global COVID-19 pandemic, may have prevented more than 700,000 new cases by delaying the spread of the virus, researchers said Tuesday.

Drastic Chinese control measures in the first 50 days of the epidemic bought other cities across the country valuable time to prepare and install their own restrictions, according to the paper by researchers in China, the United States and the UK, published in the journal Science.

By day 50 of the epidemic -- February 19 -- there were 30,000 confirmed cases in China, said Oxford fellow Christopher Dye, one of the paper's authors.

"Our analysis suggests that without the Wuhan travel ban and the national emergency response there would have been more than 700,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases outside of Wuhan by that date," he was quoted as saying in a press release.

"China's control measures appear to have worked by successfully breaking the chain of transmission -- preventing contact between infectious and susceptible people."

The researchers used a combination of case reports, public health information and mobile phone location tracking to investigate the spread of the virus.

The phone tracking provided a "fascinating" new stream of data, said another of the report's authors, Penn State biology professor Ottar Bjornstad.

The time period they studied encompassed two of China's biggest holidays, the Spring Festival and the Lunar New Year.

The researchers "were able to compare patterns of travel into and out of Wuhan during the outbreak with cell phone data from two previous spring festivals," Bjornstad said.

"The analysis revealed an extraordinary reduction in movement following the travel ban of January 23, 2020. Based on this data, we could also calculate the likely reduction in Wuhan-associated cases in other cities across China."

The Wuhan shutdown delayed the arrival of the virus in other cities, their model showed, giving them time to prepare by banning public gatherings and closing entertainment venues, among other measures.

Nearly half of humanity has now been told to stay home to curb the spread of the virus, and lockdowns are rapidly becoming normalized.

But when Beijing first shut down Wuhan more than two months ago, the decision was seen as a dramatic escalation in the fight against infection.

With the restrictions in the city slowly being lifted and life inching closer to normal, the question for China -- and other countries around the globe -- is what will happen once movement resumes.

"We are acutely aware that resident or imported infections could lead to a resurgence of transmission," said another of the report's authors, Huaiyu Tian, an associate professor of epidemiology at Beijing Normal University.

Did Russia have prior knowledge of coronavirus pandemic?

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic took over the world, researchers have been trying to understand the dynamics of who is at a greater risk of infection, serious illness, and death. One of the studies has revealed in detail how the rate of infection increases in coronavirus patients once they reach middle age.

The analyses found that while the overall death rate for confirmed cases was 1.38 per cent, the rate rose sharply with age – from 0.0016 per cent in the under 10s, to 7.8 per cent in 80s and over.

A dramatic rise was seen among middle-aged groups too, with 4 per cent of people in their 40s needing hospital treatment and more than 8 per cent of patients in their 50s.

One of the estimates, reported in Lancet Infectious Diseases, are based on an analysis of 70,117 laboratory-confirmed and clinically-diagnosed cases in mainland China, combined with 689 positive cases among people evacuated from Wuhan on repatriation flights.

“Our analysis very clearly shows that at aged 50 and over, hospitalisation is much more likely than in those under 50, and a greater proportion of cases are likely to be fatal,” said Professor Azra Ghani, a co-author of the study.

The results have been largely mirrored in the US and China. The most severe cases, and the highest rates of death, are among the elderly in the US. In the earliest cases reported in the US, older Americans represented 31 per cent of the cases, they accounted for 45 per cent of hospitalisations, 53 per cent of ICU admissions, and 80 per cent of deaths.

In Italy, 22 per cent of the population is 65 or older, compared to 17 per cent in the US. While it also raises hopes for a less disastrous health care breakdown, it also puts a question mark on the awareness of the two nations — who are still reeling under the delay they caused in initiating an action against the outbreak.

But, having said that, the millennials are not completely invincible. Young people may contract the disease, a not-insignificant percentage of them can get very sick, and a smaller number will die. The rates of severe and deadly cases may not be nearly as high as the older generations, but coronavirus can bring anyone down.

How age and death are related when it comes to Covid-19

Social distancing appears to have been helping slow the spread of coronavirus in the parts of the world, where the guidelines have been seriously implemented.

Since coronavirus is spread mainly through respiratory droplets, especially when people cough or sneeze, maintaining a safe distance is recommended to decrease transmission.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends being more than one metre (three feet) away from the nearest person.

The Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM) looked at the collected health data in the coronavirus hotspot of Washington state, as well as a few other areas, to calculate the impact of the lockdown — imposed to practise social distancing.

In a small area of US alone, public health data, including positive and negative tests and overall mortality, appeared to show that "the epidemic has slowed”. The disease's reproductive number -- the amount of people a single patient will infect on average -- dropped by nearly half, from 2.7 at the end of February to 1.4 by March 18, it calculated.

In addition, according to a new study by experts at Imperial College London released on Monday, interventions across all 11 countries of European Union would have averted 59,000 deaths up to 31 March [95% credible interval 21,000-120,000].

The countries assessed in the report were Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

“It is therefore critical that the current interventions remain in place and trends in cases and deaths are closely monitored in the coming days and weeks to provide reassurance that transmission of SARS-Cov-2 is slowing,” the study added.

The WHO has, however, started using the phrase "physical distancing" instead of "social distancing" as a way to prevent the spread of the virus.

"We're changing to say physical distance and that's on purpose because we want people to still remain connected," WHO epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove said.

After Twitter removed posts by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for spreading misinformation about ways to contain coronavirus, Facebook removed the posts across all its platforms, including Instagram.

As per company rules, the posts peddled fake news and claimed that the anti-malaria prescription drug hydroxychloroquine was an effective treatment for COVID-19

An additional video in which he claimed that social distancing needs to be avoided was also taken down.

Twitter on Sunday removed two tweets by Bolsonaro for not confirming to public health guidelines on coronavirus.

The social networking site while taking down the tweets said that it had recently expanded its global rules on managing content that contradicted public health information from official sources and could put people at greater risk of transmitting COVID-19.

Johnson & Johnson on Monday claimed that it may be able to develop an emergency COVID-19 vaccine as early as the beginning of 2021.

To reach the time-period goal, the company has begun manufacturing already.

Even though J&J has not undertaken major vaccine programmes, it took a front seat in the current pandemic. A “candidate vaccine” along with two backups has been prepared.

Starting September, human trials will kick in. The vaccine is apparently in development “on a not-for-profit basis”.

Could a coronavirus vaccine be ready by the beginning of 2021? A major company claims so!

The country is currently undergoing a 21-days lockdown to prevent the virus from spreading in the country. Forrester, a market research firm has released data which claims that the e-commerce industry in the country will take big hits from the lockdown, almost amounting to US $1 billion.

The growth rate for most companies is expected to dip to a single-digit, with a lot of monetary loss in the process.

This loss will cause a trickle-down effect, causing large losses to not only companies, but to small sellers and enterprises on online portals.

In conversation with Entrackr, Forrester’s senior forecast analyst Satish Meena, claimed that a loss of over one billion dollars is expected for e-commerce platforms.

Factors affecting the business include disruption of chain supplies, limited consumer spending, and lack of items most needed during a crisis.

Non-essential goods account for 70 per cent online sales in the country. These translated into over $32 billion, during the last year.

The previous hopes of a growth over 26 per cent has been muddled by COVID-19, along with the precautionary measures in place globally. Essentially, everything is shut down, stocks are low, and people have lesser demand.

An evangelical pastor in Florida was arrested on Monday for "repeatedly" ignoring confinement orders intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus by holding services with hundreds of people, police said.

Pastor Ronald Howard-Browne, 58, was arrested for unlawful assembly and violating quarantine orders while holding two services on Sunday in the eastern Florida city of Tampa, prison records show.

The pastor "intentionally and repeatedly disregarded state and local public health orders, which put his congregation and our community in danger," tweeted Hillsborough County sheriff Chad Chronister.

Howard-Browne, a staunch supporter of US President Donald Trump, does not believe the COVID-19 disease is serious and accused the press of "stirring up religious bigotry and hate."

He considers his church, The River at Tampa Bay Church, to be an essential service that must remain open during the pandemic.

Following an arrest warrant, Howard-Browne turned himself in and was released less than an hour later on USD 500 bail.

The United States has blocked imports of what might be the world’s most abundant alternative to N95 respirator masks — KN95 masks — even as hospitals around the country desperately seek them to protect healthcare workers treating Covid-19 patients.

The KN95 masks are designed to filter out at least 95 per cent of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger in size — the same measure used for the scarce N95 mask. Its structure also resembles N95’s — it fits around the nose and the mouth, decreasing the risk of infection.

The only lacunae with KN95 masks, however, are — despite complying with norms — they are Chinese in origin and that they have not been certified by the US government.

In fact, last week, to ease the national shortfall for the protective gear, the FDA issued an emergency authorisation for non-N95 respirators that had been certified by five foreign countries as well as the European Union. It conspicuously left the KN95 masks out of the emergency authorisation.

Without the FDA’s approval, the importers are scared to order these masks. And even the hospitals are refusing to accept them even as free donations — because they fear legal liability.

The N95 masks are usually sold in abundance, but in just two months, the coronavirus pandemic has depleted the world’s supply. This has led to the emergence of a gray market of counterfeit masks putting healthcare workers at serious risk of infection.

As the death toll owing to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rise exponentially, cemeteries in Iraq are now refusing to bury many people.

Many cemetery workers fear that they may contract the respiratory illness from the corpses, and are thereby returning the remains to hospital morgues.

AFP reported a case along these lines recently. Saad Malik, a man in Iraq, lost his father to the coronavirus.

For over a week, Malik struggled to bury his father as cemeteries refused to bury the father.

Owing to the fear embedded into the illness, Iraqi authorities - especially religious, alongside tribes and common people, have been sending the bodies back to morgues, where the bodies are piling up.

Such pile-ups increase the risk of infection, in fact way more than the risk of getting it while burying the corpses. Additionally, basic paraphernalia like masks and gloves can prevent contracting the illness while handling the bodies.

Misinformation stems panic

This is a classic case of panic stemming from misinformation."We couldn't hold a funeral for him and haven't been able to bury his body, even though it's been more than a week since he died," Malik told AFP.

"Can you imagine that across this huge country Iraq, there aren't a few square metres to bury a small number of bodies?", he added.

Iraq, a predominantly Muslim country, has strict dictates about death. The person must be buried within 24 hours of dying, with strict prohibition of cremation.

As of now, Iraq has more than 500 confirmed cases of coronavirus. Additionally, 42 people have died from the virus. The actual numbers are expected to be much higher, as very few people have been tested for the virus.

Local Iraqi bodies refuse to bury victims of COVID-19 as mass-hysteria about potential infection spreads

The United States is currently grappling with the COVID-19 crisis. More than 3,000 people have died in the country due to the pandemic.

The state of California alone witnessed a 100 per cent increase in hospitalisations related to COVID-19, based on the figures provided by Gavin Newsom, the state governor.

Also read: Coronavirus death toll in United States surges past 3,000

Over the last four days, the number of coronavirus patients have doubled, while the number of Intesive Care Unit (ICU) patients have tripled.

Until yesterday, 1,421 people had been hospitalised. Four days “The number of patients requiring intensive care beds rose to 597 from 200”, he said.

“Altogether, 5,763 people have tested positive for the disease in the state”, the governor added.

To tackle this sudden surge in demand, Newsom has reached out to retired doctors and nurses, alongside inducting students. He has set up a website for the same, and has been directing them to clinics and hospitals that are in dire need of expertise.

California will reactivate the medical licences of retired healthcare workers, while giving fresh licences to students.

“If you’re a nursing school student, a medical school student, we need you,” Newsom said. “If you’ve just retired in the last couple of years, we need you.”

California, as part of its “California Health Corps” is inducting more staff into the state medical machinery. Almost 50,000 more hospital beds have been sanctioned.

An additional executive order has been put into action. As per this, assistants can now perform some duties earlier limited to doctors.

Also read: Coronavirus death toll in United States surges past 3,000 Over the last four days, the number of coronavirus patients have doubled, while the number of Intesive Care Unit (ICU) patients have tripled. Almost 50,000 more hospital beds have been sanctioned. An additional executive order has been put into action. As per this, assistants can now perform some duties earlier limited to doctors. In the state of Victoria, “Wayss”, another support service for women, claims that the number of domestic cases had doubled over the last week. They believe this is a peculiar state of affairs. Wayss’ chief executive Liz Thomas, in conversation with ABC said that this surge may be attributed to lack of release elsewhere, which was otherwise accessible to the public.

Amid the coronavirus crisis which has now infected over 700,000 people worldwide, Russia is taking a different approach to deal with the pandemic.

Reports suggest that the country, under President Vladimir Putin’s leadership, is pushing the limits of technology based surveillance to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Just last year, Putin had approved plans for a “Russian internet”, which can be firewalled from the rest of the world.

According to CNN, the Russian government is working rigorously on surveillance techniques to contain the pandemic. However, many analysts believe that this is a push for more state involvement in the civil society.

Moscow has come up with a massive facial-recognition system, which has triggered backlash from observers who viewed it as a means to keep citizens in check. Many have filed lawsuits citing unlawful surveillance.

The Russian government has effectively employed the technology to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

As per official Moscow police data, 200 people who violated quarantine have been caught and fined. This was achieved using a 170,000 facial recognition camera system.

Many media reports indicated that many people had left their homes only for a minute before the camera had identified them.

As the number of coronavirus cases continue to increase in Pakistan, the army has been deployed across the country to enforce the lockdown.

Currently, Pakistan has over 1,571 positive cases of the virus.

Dr Zafar Mirza, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Health, during a press briefing, claimed that the viral outbreak was “under control” in Pakistan.

Cases on the rise

Army deployed

Under the ambit of Article 245, the Pakistan Army has deployed troops across the country.

"Army troops are assisting Federal & Provincial administrations in ensuring enforcement measures for containment of COVID-19 with focus on Public Safety. All points of entries (POE) being manned & monitored, establishment of joint Check Posts and joint patrolling with other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) being carried out effectively," the government statement said.

Additional troops have been sent to the volatile region of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in areas like Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur, Barnala, Muzafarabbad, Bagh, Kel and Rawalakot.

Out of the 1571, 857 people who tested positive for coronavirus were pilgrims who visited from Iran, which has taken a major hit owing to the virus. Additional 191 patients visited from outside the country, and the rest being local transmissions.

As of figures, 8,066 people continue to live in quarantine centres, with 4,365 undergoing mandatory testing. Out of these, 869 have tested positive so far.

Many experts fear that the number of infected patients right now is lower than the reported cases.

However, the numbers are low because of early measures, as claimed by Pakistan’s authorities.

"This could happen only because of the coordination between Pakistan and China's government and as a result of which it was decided not to let Chinese citizens travel before a 14-day period," he said in a statement.

Pakistan had recently received flak for not flying back students from Wuhan. Mirza claimed that this decision “proved right”.

Recently, the Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered reopening national highways to permit the movement of goods.

Chinese relief

Pakistan has roped in help from China during such difficult times. A second plane carrying supplies landed in Pakistan yesterday.

Two days ago, eight medical experts from China landed in Pakistan to assist with containment and relief measures.

In view of the pandemic, the Pakistan government has closed its western borders with Iran and Afghanistan. Additionally, the eastern border with India also continues to remain shut.

According to the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Security, Moeed Yusuf, the move was taken in the wake of increasing COVID-19 cases in the country.

All flights in the country remain suspended until April 4, with exceptions allowed if countries want to repatriate its citizens.

Yesterday, over four people tested positive in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa region, three in the province of Balochistan, and four more in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Additional figure from the Ministry of National Health Services, Punjab now has 571 cases, Sindh has 502, 192 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 141 in Balochistan, 116 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), 43 in Islamabad and six in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. As of now, 14 have died owing to the virus, with 28 recorded recoveries. 11 patients continue to remain in critical condition. Also read: Pakistan says coronavirus outbreak under control as cases rise to 1,526 Army deployed Under the ambit of Article 245, the Pakistan Army has deployed troops across the country. (With inputs from agencies)

President Donald Trump on Sunday abandoned his timetable for life returning to normal in the United States, extending emergency coronavirus restrictions for another month, while Spain suffered its deadliest day.

Trump, who had hoped to shortly re-open much of the US, said the death rate in the country was likely to increase for two weeks and announced "social distancing" guidelines would be in place until at least the end of April.

Hospitals are rapidly filling with patients in Europe and the United States -- now the focal points of a pandemic that began in Asia but has upended the global economy and upset everyday life in unprecedented ways.

Trump said the better that Americans obey the emergency guidelines to stay home "the faster this whole nightmare will end."

"Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won," Trump said, altering his previously upbeat tone.

He said he expected the country to "be well on our way to recovery" by June 1 -- dropping his previous target of mid-April.

''We will defeat this invisible curse, this invisible enemy," he added.

Senior US scientist Anthony Fauci issued a tentative prediction that COVID-19 could claim from 100,000 to 200,000 lives -- a figure Trump described as "horrible."

As of Sunday, more than 3.38 billion people were asked or ordered to follow confinement measures, according to an AFP database, as the virus infects every sphere of life, wiping out millions of jobs, postponing elections and pressing pause on the sporting scene.

Worst-hit Italy, with 10,779 deaths, and Spain, with 6,803 dead, together have accounted for more than half of the world's deaths.

Both countries are clinging to the hope, however, that they are closing in on the peak of the crisis.

Even amidst the coronavirus pandemic, North Korea doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Just today, the country tested “super large” rocket launchers, the BBC reported.

This happened just hours after South Korea had condemned the Northern counterpart for undertaking tests during the outbreak.

In classic North Korea style, mission tests are undertaken during the springtime.

On Sunday itself, two short-range missiles were fired into the sea by North Korea.

Even as the world grapples with coronavirus, North Korea continues to pursue its national goals.

So far, the country has reported no positive cases of COVID-19, but like all things North Korea, no analyst trusts their claims.

The two short-range missiles were fired from the eastern city of Wonsan. As per information released by the South Korean military, the missiles flew for over 410 kms and reached the altitude of 50 kms before plunging into the ocean.

Earlier today, KCNA, North Korea’s state media outlet claimed to have tested “super large” rocket launchers.

"In a situation where the entire world is experiencing difficulties due to Covid-19, this kind of military act by North Korea is very inappropriate and we call for an immediate halt," said South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a statement directly attacked the North administration.

As per Reuters data, the total number of missile tests this month by North Korea now stand at a count of ten.

North Korea has broken its record of most missile tests in a month.

2016 and 2017 also witnessed multiple missile tests, during the peak of their missile programme. The last time North Korea fired these many missiles was in August 2019.

As the rest of the world shuts down its governments and parliaments, North Korea is holding the Supreme People’s Assembly on April 10, which shall witness over 700 leaders of the country in one spot.

If coronavirus protocols were followed, this would be deemed very dangerous!
