Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday slammed Congress' economic policies, saying that the party ignored India's potential. Addressing a public meeting in Gujarat's Bhavnagar, PM Modi criticised the license-quota raj before 1991 and Congress' focus on imports after opening India's market. Reiterating his call for self-reliance, he said, "India must become Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) and stand strong before the world. India has no shortage of potential, but after independence, Congress ignored all of India's potential." "Therefore, even after 6-7 decades of independence, India has not achieved the success it deserved. There were two major reasons for this. For a long time, the Congress government kept the country entangled in the license-quota raj, isolating it from the world market. And then, when the era of globalisation arrived, the only path to import was taken," the Prime Minister added. He took a dig at Congress over the scams under the UPA government and said that their policies prevented India's true strength from being revealed. "Scams worth thousands, lakhs, and crores were committed. The policies of the Congress governments caused great harm to the country's youth. These policies prevented India's true strength from being revealed," PM Modi said. Further, he said that the nation's "biggest enemy" is dependence on other countries. Prime Minister said, "Today, India is moving forward with the spirit of 'Vishwabandhu'. Duniya mein koi hamara bada dushman nahi hai. Agar hamara koi dushman hai toh woh hai dusre deshon par hamari nirbharta (We have no major enemy in the world. Our biggest enemy is our dependence on other countries). This is our biggest enemy, and together we must defeat this enemy of India, the enemy of dependence. We must always reiterate this." He added that to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the coming generations, India cannot afford to have major foreign dependence. He stated, "The greater the foreign dependence, the greater the country's failure. For global peace, stability, and prosperity, the country with the world's largest population must become Atmanirbhar. If we remain dependent on others, our self-respect will be hurt. We cannot leave the future of 1.4 billion countrymen to others. We cannot leave the resolution for the country's development to the dependence of others. We cannot put the future of the coming generations at stake." "There is only one medicine for a hundred sorrows, and that is a self-reliant India," the Prime Minister added. PM Modi has been reiterating his call for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Earlier, in Assam, he emphasised that India has embarked on the path to becoming "self-reliant" in the energy sector, highlighting the country's dependence on other countries for importing crude oil and gas. "We have been dependent on foreign countries for these things. We import huge quantities of crude oil and gas from foreign countries, and in return, India has to give lakhs of crores of rupees to other countries every year. Our money creates jobs abroad. The income of the people there increases. It was necessary to change this situation. That is why India has embarked on the path of becoming self-reliant for its energy needs," the Prime Minister said. Meanwhile, today, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over Rs 34,200 crore at the 'Samudra se Samriddhi' event in Bhavnagar.Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits for grammar and punctuation. The Congress on Tuesday claimed that "something serious happened between 1 pm and 4.30 pm yesterday", leading to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation from one of India's top constitutional posts. Dhankhar, known for his bold views on matters concerning the nation, resigned on Monday, citing health reasons. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote in a post on X that Dhankhar chaired an important meeting in the Rajya Sabha at 12.30 pm yesterday, which was also attended by BJP leaders JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju. However, in another meeting at 4.30 pm, chaired by Dhankhar, he claimed, the two BJP leaders were conspicuous by their absence. "Yesterday, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar chaired the Business Advisory Committee of the Rajya Sabha at 12:30 PM. It was attended by most members, including the Leader of the House, JP Nadda, and the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju. After some discussion, the BAC decided to meet again at 4:30 PM. At 4:30 PM, the BAC reassembled under the chairmanship of Shri Jagdeep Dhankar. It waited for Shri Nadda and Shri Rijiju to arrive. They never came. Shri Jagdeep Dhankar was not personally informed that the two senior Ministers were not attending. Rightly, he took umbrage and rescheduled the BAC for today at 1 PM," he wrote on X. "So something very serious happened yesterday between 1 PM and 4:30 PM to account for the deliberate absence of Shri Nadda and Shri Rijiju from the second BAC yesterday. Now, in a truly unprecedented move, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar has resigned. He has given health reasons for doing so. Those should be respected. But it is also a fact that there are far deeper reasons for his resignation," he added. Several opposition leaders were shocked by the sudden resignation of Dhankhar. Congress leader Danish Ali questioned whether health concerns were the sole reason behind the resignation. He claimed some BJP leaders had been making remarks against the dignity of the Vice-President. "The reason behind his resignation does not seem to be due to health concerns... Recently, it was heard that some top national leaders of the BJP were not making statements that matched the dignity of his (VP Dhankhar) position... It appears that he had differences with the government regarding the impeachment motion against Justice Yadav and Justice Verma... He has said multiple times that he would never come under anyone's pressure...Mysterious things are happening that are not in the favour of the nation," Ali said. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat also questioned the resignation of Dhankhar, saying in politics, nothing happens "suddenly". "May God grant him a long and healthy life. But nothing in politics is sudden. The screenplay is written well in advance. The Bihar elections are near. That may be one of the angles...A lot of unexpected things happen as per the will of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister...However, all I can say is that his health should be the priority," he added.
Why Dhankhar resigned
Dhankhar said he had resigned from his post "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice." He thanked President Droupadi Murmu for "unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure". He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his cooperation and support. Dhankhar became the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022.

Why Dhankhar resigned Dhankhar said he had resigned from his post "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice." He thanked President Droupadi Murmu for "unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure". He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his cooperation and support. Dhankhar became the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022.

Operation Sindoor: Kharge demands special parliament session, asks PM Modi to refrain from ‘self-praise’

The Congress party on Thursday (May 29) once again claimed that the UPA government under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh conducted as many as six surgical strikes. Congress released a list that included names and dates of the surgical strikes. This came in response to the grand old party's assertion that it has never used military operations for political gains. It also came after Congress leader Shashi Tharoor - who is leading an Indian delegation on Operation Sindoor - while speaking in Panama, reportedly said that "for the first time" India breached the LoC between India and Pakistan to conduct a surgical strike on a terror base.

आपकी जानकारी के लिए 👇 pic.twitter.com/YePrHkAWGK— Congress (@INCIndia) May 29, 2025

However, Tharoor hit back at “zealots” within his party after facing criticism over his reported remarks. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also questioned External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar several times post Operation Sindoor and claimed that India's foreign policy has "collapsed." India conducted Operation Sindoor hitting terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing 100 terrorists. India's action was in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 in which 26 people were killed. Prime Minister Modi in his speeches has praised the Armed forces for Operation Sindoor and reiterated that the Operation is the "new normal". He has also said that India will hit Pakistan and not differentiate between terrorists and those who shield them. The Prime Minister also took a veiled dig at the opposition, saying that the armed forces recorded Operation Sindoor on camera so that “no one at home asks for proof.” His remarks alluded to the Opposition's doubts about surgical strikes in 2016 and the Balakot airstrikes in 2019.
Congress mentioned UPA-era air strikes in 2019
Earlier in 2019, the Congress party had questioned the Balakot air strike when the BJP government said that it was conducted to avenge the deaths of 40 CRPF personnel in the Pulwama terror attack. The Congress then held a press conference listing the strikes under the UPA government. The UPA government carried out six surgical strikes - Bhattal sector in Poonch (June 19, 2008); Sharda sector, across Neelam River Valley, in Kel (August 30-September 1, 2011); Sawan Patra checkpost (January 6, 2013); Nazapir sector (July 27-28, 2013); Neelam Valley (August 6, 2013); and one on December 23, 2013, Congress spokesperson Rajeev Shukla had said. Shukla had also listed two surgical strikes carried out under the previous BJP-led NDA government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. These were Nadala Enclave, across the Neelam River (January 21, 2000) and Baroh sector in Poonch (September 18, 2003), Shukla said. The Congress said that both Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee never talked about the strikes.

India: Opposition demands special Parliament session, wants reason behind India-Pak ceasefire

As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, the whole nation has united to back the retaliatory strikes against Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. From Parliament to the streets, everyone came together to back the Centre's actions against Pakistan for sponsoring terrorist attacks in India.
The key opposition party, Congress, has shown full support and expressed solidarity towards the Indian government and armed forces during its retaliatory attacks against Pakistan. This support was not seen during the 2016 surgical strikes and 2019 Balakot airstrikes.
Moreover, hundreds of youths gathered together in Chandigarh after authorities called for civil defence volunteers, chanting, "Ready to give my life for India."

A break down

Now first, let's break down how the opposition expressed solidarity this time, but not during the 2016 and 2019 air strikes.
After the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people on April 22, the opposition stressed that it was time "for demonstrating our collective will as a nation to teach Pakistan a lesson and curb terrorism decisively”.
Later on Wednesday, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) declared “full support” to the armed forces, saying it was “time to be united”.
They also decided to halt all planned party programmes, and said, "standing in complete solidarity with our armed forces during this critical hour."
Not just that, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also praised the Indian Armed Forces and lauded their courage and determination.
“We are proud of our armed forces, which gave a befitting reply by taking bold and decisive action against terror bases in Pakistan and PoK. We salute the courage, determination, and patriotism of our brave soldiers,” Kharge said.

2019 Balakot airstrikes

Now cut to 2019 Balakot airstrikes, a day after the strikes, 21 Opposition parties in a joint statement said that they were anguished” over the “blatant politicisation” of the sacrifices of armed forces (40 security personnel were killed in the terror attack) by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Moreover, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh also demanded Modi government to give "evidence" of the damage it claimed to have caused to Pakistan during its air strikes in Balakot.

2016 URI strike

Now going back even further, during the 2016 URI strike, Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of "playing politics over the blood of jawans”.
However, after he got backlashed for his statement, he posted on X (then Twitter), "I fully support surgical strikes and I have said so unequivocally. But I will not support using the Indian Army in political posters and propaganda all across the country.”
Not just Modi government, but Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also condemned Gandhi's statement, as the AAP convenor said, "I strongly condemn what Rahul Gandhi said about our jawans."
Later, Amit Shah said, “Some parties tried to question the surgical strikes, some even raised doubts. I condemn all those who have insulted our Indian Armed Forces.”

Assisting. Killing. Inciting...': What does PAKISTAN stand for? Indian politician explains letter by letter

Youth gather on Chandigarh streets for civil defence volunteering

Amid soaring tensions between India and Pakistan, the administration of Chandigarh invited youth citizens, above 18 years, to become 'civil defence volunteers' to assist during emergency preparedness.
Following this, hundreds of youths gathered to show solidarity with Indian armed forces and fight against Pakistan terror.
One of the locals said that they wanted to do something for the Indian Army as they were doing so much for us.
Speaking to ANI, another resident, Karan Chopra, said, "I am ready to give my life for India. We have filed the form; we are ready to do whatever is expected from us..."
As India and Pakistan battle in escalating tensions, the whole nation has come united with the Indian government as Indian Armed Forces retaliate against Pakistan's attacks and foil its attacks across several regions in India.

BJP worker dies by suicide in Bengaluru, blames Congress leaders in death note

Hours after the Parliament passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, two petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the bill. The Waqf bill makes several changes to the 1995 Act governing Waqfs.
The first petition was filed by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, contending that the law violates Constitutional rights guaranteed under Articles 14 (right to equality), 25 (freedom to practice religion), 26 (freedom to manage religious affairs), 29 (minority rights) and 300A (right to property). All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Asaduddin Owaisi has filed the second petition, terming the proposed law a "brazen violation" of the fundamental rights of Muslims and the Muslim community.

What does the petitioner say in his petition against Waqf Bill?

In the petition, Jawed claims that the Act discriminates against the Muslim community by imposing restrictions. The petitioner argues that the Amendment allows state interference in the administration of waqfs. It shifts key administrative functions, such as the power to determine the nature of Waqf properties, from the Waqf Board to the District Collector. This transfer of control from religious institutions to government officials dilutes the autonomy of Waqf management and contravenes Article 26(d) of the Constitution, the plea states. The petitioner also took objection to the provisions allowing the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Central Waqf Council and the State Waqf Board. The petitioner also questions the condition in the Bill that one should be a practitioner of Islam for at least five years to create a Waqf, saying that such a limitation "infringes upon the fundamental right to profess and practice religion under Article 25."

What is Waqf Amendment Bill?

The bill seeks to manage waqf properties better, empower stakeholders involved, and make it possible to do an efficient survey of the properties. As per the bill, only lawful property owners can create waqf. In the case of 'waqf alal aulad', wherein the ancestral property is given as waqf, the inheritance rights of heirs, including females, should not be affected, as per the provisions of the bill.
It also makes it mandatory to register waqf properties online, for which a portal will be created. The current time given for registration is six months, but extensions can be taken by approaching the Waqf Tribunals. Another key area addressed by the bill is the wrongful declaration of properties as waqf, including government property. In such disputes, a state government officer will conduct an inquiry. The inspection of Waqf records will now come under section 75 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, the replacement of the erstwhile Evidence Act.
