Once considered a bastion of peace in Latin America, Ecuador has been plunged into crisis in the last five years after the unchecked, mushrooming influence of transnational Narco-gangs, who use its ports to ship cocaine to the United States and Europe. The newly elected President, Daniel Noboa, has declared war on these narco-gangs. In a major, morale-boosting success, on the 6th of February, police in Ecuador and Spain carried out a joint operation which led to the seizure of almost 2.4 tonnes of cocaine and the arrest of 30 people. More importantly, the operation led to the dismantling of a drug trafficking organization being led by an Albanian. Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

Britain has the worst cocaine habit in Europe, with rates of consumption much higher than Mexico and Colombia, international data shows the top five cocaine consuming nations. Take a look.

Who are the top 5 cocaine consuming nations?

<p>The United Kingdom is confronting the highest cocaine consumption rates in Europe, surpassing major trafficking countries, as per OECD data. <li><strong>Worst in Europe:</strong> The UK ranks second globally, following only Australia, with 2.7 per cent of adults aged 15 to 64 using cocaine.</li>
<li><strong>Binge-drinking Culture:</strong> Experts link the surge to the UK's pervasive binge-drinking culture, where cocaine is as accessible as ordering a pizza and commonly consumed in pubs, wine bars, and even at football matches.</li>
<li><strong>Gender disparity:</strong> Men in the UK are twice as likely as women to use cocaine, with 3.6 per cent&nbsp;compared to 1.6 per cent.</li>
<li><strong>Global comparison:</strong> UK's consumption rates are four times higher than Colombia (0.6 per cent) and three times higher than Mexico (0.8 per cent).</li>
<li><strong>OECD analysis:</strong> The UK's rates are more than double the average (1.2 per cent) across 38 OECD developed Western nations.</li>

UK outpaces Colombia in alarming cocaine consumption: Data

<p>Switzerland's capital city, Bern, is contemplating a pilot programme that would test the legal sale of drugs&nbsp;for recreational use. This unprecedented initiative is aimed at addressing the country's widespread drug use by providing a regulated and safer alternative.</p>

<p>The proposal has gained support from Bern's parliament, although it requires a change in federal law for implementation.</p>

<p>Advocates are reportedly arguing that the traditional "war on drugs" has failed, and innovative approaches such as legalisation could offer better control over the market and promote safer usage.</p>

<p>"The war on drugs has failed, and we have to look at new ideas," said Eva Chen, a Bern council member from the Alternative Left Party. "Control and legalisation can do better than mere repression."</p>

<p>This move is aligned with a global shift in drug policies, with an increasing number of countries and US states adopting measures such as decriminalisation and the legal recreational use of marijuana.</p>

<p>Several European countries, including Spain, Italy, and Portugal, have already moved away from issuing prison sentences for drug possession charges.</p>

<p>Wastewater studies analysing illicit drug presence reportedly revealed that wealthy Swiss cities, including Zurich, Basel, and Geneva, rank among the top European cities for drug use.</p>

Switzerland's capital city, Bern, is contemplating a pilot programme that would test the legal sale of drugs for recreational use. This unprecedented initiative is aimed at addressing the country's widespread drug use by providing a regulated and safer alternative. The proposal has gained support from Bern's parliament, although it requires a change in federal law for implementation. Advocates are reportedly arguing that the traditional "war on drugs" has failed, and innovative approaches such as legalisation could offer better control over the market and promote safer usage. "The war on drugs has failed, and we have to look at new ideas," said Eva Chen, a Bern council member from the Alternative Left Party. "Control and legalisation can do better than mere repression." This move is aligned with a global shift in drug policies, with an increasing number of countries and US states adopting measures such as decriminalisation and the legal recreational use of marijuana. <p>Scientists in Brazil have developed a new treatment for crack, and cocaine: a vaccine. The drug will work in an innovative way, by depriving users of the "high".&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is called "Calixcoca," and here's everything you need to know about this vaccine for cocaine.</p>

<h2><strong>How Calixcoca works</strong></h2>

<p>The vaccine, as per an AFP report, triggers an immune response, which blocks the high from cocaine and its derivatives and stops it from reaching the brain.</p>

<p>As per the report, the immune response trigger will make a patient's body produce antibodies that bind cocaine molecules to the bloodstream. The enlarged molecules will be rendered too large to pass into the brain's "reward centre" or the mesolimbic system that is stimulated by cocaine to produce dopamine&nbsp;— the pleasure-inducing reward chemical.</p>

<p>Cocaine is set to overtake oil to become Colombia's main export item as the government strengthens the fight against drug trafficking. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg on Thursday (September 14), Colombia's oil exports posted a drop of 30 per cent in the first half and the revenue from cocaine has constantly gone up. This means that cocaine could be the country's number one export item as soon as this year.</p>

<p>“Cocaine export revenues jumped to $18.2 billion in 2022 — not far behind oil exports of $19.1 billion last year,” the report estimated, and pointed out that while the government was destroying laboratories where cocaine was&nbsp;manufactured from coca leaves, but this did not prevent production from expanding.</p>

<h2><strong>Govt changes approach towards drug trafficking</strong></h2>

<p>President Gustavo Petro's government has changed Colombia's approach towards drug trafficking, seeking to hit drug lords who benefit more from the sale of narcotics overseas rather than targeting coca leaf producers, who are the weakest link in the production chain. President Petro has been seeking talks with the nation’s main drug-trafficking groups, hoping to end the 60-year-long conflict through peace accords.</p>

<p>The report said that the new approach toward drugs is facilitating illegal groups to increase cocaine production. As per a United Nations report this week, cocaine output surged to a record 1,738 tonnes last year, while the amount of land planted with coca, the raw material for making the drug, rose 13% to a record 230,000 hectares (570,000 acres) in 2022 from the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A week back, <strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/colombian-president-petro-proposes-latin-american-alliance-to-combat-drug-trafficking-634384">Colombian President Petro</a></strong> proposed a Latin American alliance to bring a unified voice to the fight against drug trafficking. "It is time to rebuild hope and not repeat the bloody and ferocious wars, the ill-named 'war on drugs', viewing drugs as a military problem and not as a health problem for society," Petro said during the Latin America and Caribbean Conference on Drugs on September 9.</p>

<p>He also pushed for the reconsideration of an anti-drug strategy and urged for the need for a unified voice "that defends our society, our future and our history and stops repeating a failed discourse."</p>

Cocaine is set to overtake oil to become Colombia's main export item as the government strengthens the fight against drug trafficking. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg on Thursday (September 14), Colombia's oil exports posted a drop of 30 per cent in the first half and the revenue from cocaine has constantly gone up. This means that cocaine could be the country's number one export item as soon as this year. “Cocaine export revenues jumped to $18.2 billion in 2022 — not far behind oil exports of $19.1 billion last year,” the report estimated, and pointed out that while the government was destroying laboratories where cocaine was manufactured from coca leaves, but this did not prevent production from expanding. Govt changes approach towards drug trafficking President Gustavo Petro's government has changed Colombia's approach towards drug trafficking, seeking to hit drug lords who benefit more from the sale of narcotics overseas rather than targeting coca leaf producers, who are the weakest link in the production chain. President Petro has been seeking talks with the nation’s main drug-trafficking groups, hoping to end the 60-year-long conflict through peace accords. The report said that the new approach toward drugs is facilitating illegal groups to increase cocaine production. As per a United Nations report this week, cocaine output surged to a record 1,738 tonnes last year, while the amount of land planted with coca, the raw material for making the drug, rose 13% to a record 230,000 hectares (570,000 acres) in 2022 from the previous year. Colombia proposes Latin American alliance to combat drug trafficking A week back, Colombian President Petro proposed a Latin American alliance to bring a unified voice to the fight against drug trafficking. "It is time to rebuild hope and not repeat the bloody and ferocious wars, the ill-named 'war on drugs', viewing drugs as a military problem and not as a health problem for society," Petro said during the Latin America and Caribbean Conference on Drugs on September 9. He also pushed for the reconsideration of an anti-drug strategy and urged for the need for a unified voice "that defends our society, our future and our history and stops repeating a failed discourse." Numerous sharks off the coast of Florida may have developed cocaine addictions, according to a research. These aquatic creatures have been munching on copious amounts of drugs poured into the water. Drug traffickers have been smuggling cocaine from South America to Central America along the Florida coast for years.

<p>These bales of narcotics—which are often dumped at sea as it helps smugglers avoid law enforcement—find their way to the shore aided by tides and currents.</p>

<p>In June, the US Coast Guard seized over 14,100 pounds (6,400kg) of cocaine in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean,&nbsp;with an estimated value of $186 million.</p>

<h2><strong>Discovery's&nbsp;documentary on cocaine sharks</strong></h2>

<p>As so much cocaine was entering the waters, US marine biologist Tom Hird, who is also called ‘The Blowfish’, wanted to see whether sharks off the coast of Florida were ingesting the narcotics.</p>

<p>To find out, he made a documentary for Discovery's Shark Week called Cocaine Sharks. University of Florida environmental scientist&nbsp;Tracy Fanara&nbsp;also took part in the study, reported LiveScience.</p>

<p>For their experiment, they went to the Florida Keys archipelago to investigate reports that sharks are “high” on drugs.</p>

<p>"We have no idea what [cocaine] could do to the shark," Hird told Live Science, adding that of the limited research that's been done, different fish appear to react in different ways to the same chemical.</p>

Joe Biden and his family members appear to be in a 'political soup' after cocaine was discovered in the West Wing of the White House on Sunday while the US president was away. The rivals of Biden from the Republican Party, former US president Donald Trump and 2024 presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, launched scathing attacks on the president in the wake of the shocking discovery of cocaine. “Does anybody really believe that the COCAINE found in the West Wing of the White House, very close to the Oval Office, is for the use of anyone other than Hunter & Joe Biden,” posted former President Donald Trump on Truth Social. “But watch, the Fake News Media will soon start saying that the amount found was ‘very small,’ & it wasn’t really COCAINE, but rather common ground up Aspirin, & the story will vanish,” Trump added, in his angry tirade on the matter. × Biden administration blowing it on a lot of fronts: DeSantis Florida's current governor and Republican presidential hopeful DeSantis took a dig at the administration of Biden. So that’s not something that we see. We do have to occasionally get slime out of the carpet and get marker off the wallpaper,” he stated.
