“This was a significant amount of cocaine and its seizure will be a sizeable blow to the organised crime group which attempted to smuggle it into the UK,” said senior investigating officer Alan French.&nbsp;

They analysed the brain's reward pathway, and tried to answer why these substances can takeover our natural desires for essential needs such as food and water.

Lead researcher Jeffrey Friedman said, "We've known for decades that natural rewards, like food, and drugs can activate the same brain region. But what we've just learned is that they impact neural activity in strikingly different ways."&nbsp;

"One of the big takeaways here is that addictive drugs have pathologic effects on these neural pathways, that's distinct from, say, the physiologic response to eating a meal when you are hungry or drinking a glass of water when you are thirsty," he added.

<h2>How did they perform this study?</h2>

Using mouse models, the research team employed a comprehensive approach to study the impact of cocaine and morphine on the brain's reward circuits. By mapping brain activity, imaging neurons, and analysing genetic activity, they tried to understand how these drugs influence neural pathways.

The study reveals the crucial role of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in both typical brain functions and drug rewards. Neurons projecting to the NAc from the orbitofrontal cortex are implicated in reducing natural reward responses when activated by drug use.

"The NAc is a key node where the underlying dopaminoceptive neurons direct and refine animals' behaviours towards their goals," neuroscientist Bowen Tan told Science Alert. "What we hadn't been able to understand is how repeated exposure to drugs corrupts these neurons, resulting in escalated drug-seeking behaviors and a shift away from healthy goals," he added.

The recently found package is among several others that have been discovered around Sydney sporadically since three days before Christmas last year.&nbsp;

“As inquiries continue, the public are reminded to report any suspicious package to authorities,” said the New South Wales (NSW) police, in a statement on Tuesday (Apr 2).&nbsp;

<h2>Months-long mystery</h2>

Since the first discovery in December, packages containing more than 250 kilogrammes of cocaine have been found along the coast of the Australian state.&nbsp;

On December 22, 2023, a package of illicit drugs was found in the Central Coast region, around 90 kg,&nbsp;north of Sydney&nbsp;three days before Christmas.&nbsp;

Similar packages have also been discovered in Western Australia and Victoria after being washed ashore. Meanwhile, several beaches in NSW have reported such packages since December.&nbsp;

Two larger containers that had up to 39 kg&nbsp;of cocaine were found at northern beaches and at Ocean Baths a day after Christmas, on Boxing Day.&nbsp;

Around New Year’s another 39 kg&nbsp;worth of cocaine was found in North Bondi after a lifeguard had spotted the floating consignment.&nbsp;

The police believe the packages have arrived on cargo ships from South America and that these consignments may be thrown into the ocean to be picked up elsewhere.&nbsp;

Some of the bricks found were said to be covered in barnacles, and following their analysis, detectives indicated that the packages were in the water no more than six weeks before being discovered.

In the car, police allege they found a 60cm crowbar, gloves, a meat cleaver, a bladed knife, a box cutter, flashing light bars and zip ties – items they say were consistent with a kidnapping attempt.

Australian police accidentally discover 700kg of cocaine while foiling kidnapping plot

Canadian authorities are on the lookout for a 60-year-old Sikh truck driver who fled to India after he was convicted of smuggling nearly 80 kg of cocaine into Canada from the United States, reported the local media.

Raj Kumar Mehmi was sentenced to 15-year-imprisonment in absentia by a provincial court in British Columbia earlier in November this year after he was arrested in the year 2017 for smuggling a controlled substance, the CBC reported on Wednesday (Dec 13).

However, on Oct 11, just a month before he could be sentenced, he boarded a flight to New Delhi from Vancouver,&nbsp;reported the&nbsp;Vancouver Sun.

Arash Seyed, a spokesman with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) federal serious and organised crime division said that a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Mehmi.

"If you locate this suspect or have information regarding his whereabouts, please do not approach him and contact your local police agency," Seyed said announcing the warrant in Surrey on Wednesday, as per CBC.

A red notice has also been issued in his name which asks member countries to help locate, arrest and extradite Mehmi to face criminal charges in Canada.

Mehmi, in a separate release, was described as 185cm in height (just over six feet tall) and weighing 91 kilogrammes.

As per a United Nations report this week, cocaine output surged to a record 1,738 tonnes last year, while the amount of land planted with coca, the raw material for making the drug, rose 13% to a record 230,000 hectares (570,000 acres) in 2022 from the previous year. Colombia proposes Latin American alliance to combat drug trafficking A week back, Colombian President Petro proposed a Latin American alliance to bring a unified voice to the fight against drug trafficking. "It is time to rebuild hope and not repeat the bloody and ferocious wars, the ill-named 'war on drugs', viewing drugs as a military problem and not as a health problem for society," Petro said during the Latin America and Caribbean Conference on Drugs on September 9. He also pushed for the reconsideration of an anti-drug strategy and urged for the need for a unified voice "that defends our society, our future and our history and stops repeating a failed discourse."
