On Friday, local prosecutor Philippe Astru warned about the risks of taking part in narco tourism. "The act of taking possession of one of these bundles and transporting it is a crime that carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison," Astru told reporters.&nbsp;

The prosecutor also said that the purity of the substance was not known so far, adding, that if it was the usual strength of imported cocaine then it could be "fatal'' if consumed.&nbsp;

Three days back, the French government said that police seized 27 tonnes of cocaine in 2022, a five-fold increase compared with the level 10 years back.&nbsp;

Figures released by the Interior Ministry showed that seizures were up five per cent last year compared to 2021, with over half of the narcotic transiting via the West Indies and France's South American region of Guiana.

However, this is not the first time a major cocaine shipment washed up on the French coast, in 2019 at least 1.6 tonnes of the illicit drug was found all around the French Atlantic coast, while the recent drugs found on Wednesday and Sunday were on the Normandy English Channel coast. Sources familiar with the investigation told AFP that they remain uncertain about where this cocaine came from.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the French government said that they seized 27 tonnes of cocaine in 2022 which, as per interior ministry figures, is up five per cent from last year compared with 2021. Overall, the French authorities seized 157 tonnes of illegal drugs in 2022.

At least more than half of this cocaine comes from the West Indies and France’s South American region of Guiana, said the interior ministry. Over two tonnes of cocaine found in Normandy; France faces record rise in drug seizures

Canadian companies have been given approval by the country’s federal health agency to produce and sell cocaine, seemingly reflecting Health Canada’s bid to improve safety conditions for the country’s drug addicts. This also comes after a radical policy shift to address an opioid overdose crisis which has killed thousands.&nbsp;

In a statement, a Canadian biosciences company, Sunshine Earth Labs, on Thursday (March 2) said that they have been licensed to produce and sell cocaine, a month after a similar licensing arrangement was offered to the British Columbia-based Adastra Labs.

“We will evaluate how the commercialization of this substance fits in with our business model at Adastra in an effort to position ourselves to support the demand for a safe supply of cocaine”, said the chief executive Michael Forbes of the British Columbia-based company. The labs, which until now focused on cannabis extracts, are also allowed to produce and sell hallucinogens, psilocybin and psilocin which are more commonly known as magic mushrooms.&nbsp;

The Sunshine Labs said that they received permission from the federal health agency to “legally possess, produce, sell and distribute coca leaf and cocaine” in November, last year. This was in addition to MDMA (ecstasy), morphine and diacetylmorphine (heroin). “We are incredibly proud of the progress we have made in the last year, said Donovan Edwards, CEO of Sunshine Earth Labs, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “we have been proactively pursuing amendments to our Dealer's License to include MDMA, coca leaf, cocaine, opium, morphine, and diacetylmorphine to position ourselves as a legitimate safer supply partner. We will continue to work on securing global trade relationships to import ethically sourced medical products for safer supply.”

Notably, the move is in line with a criminal code exemption which was granted by the government to the aforementioned Canadian province for a three-year pilot project which aims to destigmatize drug use which they believe stops people from seeking help, reported AFP. It also made British Columbia only the second jurisdiction in North America to decriminalise hard drugs following the United States’ Oregan in 2020.&nbsp;

Out of the more than 30,000 overdose-related deaths recorded across Canada, British Columbia accounted for over 10,000 since 2016 when it declared a public health emergency and was dubbed as the epicentre of the crisis. The number also represented nearly six people dying each day from toxic drug poisoning out of the five million residents of the province.&nbsp;

However, since incumbent President Guillermo Lasso came to power two years ago, Ecuador has ramped up its efforts to stop the flow of illicit drugs in and out of the country.&nbsp;

How does it work?

The country uses a so-called encapsulation method with the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) “out of desperation to make good on destroying the drugs”, the undersecretary for Drug Control at Ecuador’s Interior Ministry, told Reuters. The process includes pulverising seized bricks of cocaine in machines with some other materials at a waste disposal plant and then mixing the fine powder obtained with cement, sand and water to create concrete.&nbsp;

The waste treatment plant which is located at an undisclosed location outside the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito reportedly receives hundreds of blocks of cocaine hydrochloride and coca paste which is the precursor to cocaine, from across the country every week. Subsequently, as per technicians, it is broken down and mixed with glass, expired medicines and even oil waste, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

After this, the powder is mixed with other materials to produce a cement slurry to use in construction. According to the UN drug agency, as this slurry sets it combines with the rest of the materials mixed and forms a stable, hard and impenetrable matrix which prevents cocaine from seeping into the ground or being recovered.&nbsp;

“This procedure is cheaper, takes less time and doesn't affect the environment,”&nbsp;said Ecuador’s Director of Anti-Drug Investigation, Pablo Ramirez, while noting that&nbsp; the encapsulation of a tonne of cocaine takes less than three hours as opposed to incinerating the same amount of the illicit drug which can take at least 12 hours.&nbsp;

However, this cocaine-laced concrete has not been used for construction projects just yet. So far, the Ecuadorian authorities have been using this process to fill 15-metre-deep holes in the undisclosed location of the plant with layers of concrete which would later form a warehouse floor and they have no plans of using the encapsulated cocaine for other projects as of now.&nbsp;

As mentioned earlier, since the country acts as a transit point for drugs sent to the US and Europe, authorities have seized record amounts of the illicit substance over the years. In 2022, while the number of seizures dropped slightly, the quantity of drugs found remained high which led to 27 police warehouses, where the illicit substances are stored before being destroyed, exceeding their maximum capacity.

Mera also told Reuters that the record amounts of drugs also surpassed the number of ovens used to incinerate the drugs which led to Ecuador using some of its excess cocaine to turn into construction material. Notably, the process of encapsulation has helped authorities to free some space at the police drug collection centres.

According to plant technicians, so far, nearly 350 tonnes of cocaine and its precursor coca paste seized between last year and the year before has been turned into construction material. While some 83 tonnes of cocaine is still waiting to be encapsulated, said Ramirez.&nbsp;

He later excreted the capsules containing cocaine and is being charged for bringing a marketable amount of cocaine.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for Liz Truss has clarified that the claims were "categorically untrue".

“If there were evidence that this alleged activity had occurred during her use of Chevening, Ms Truss would have expected to have been informed and for the relevant authorities to have properly investigated the matter," a spokesperson for Liz Truss said in an official statement.&nbsp;

A staff member told The Guardian that they had tested the powder using a swab that changes colour when it comes into contact with cocaine.

A worldwide operation against a Serbian drug network on Saturday resulted in the arrest of nine individuals, as Belgian officials seized almost 115 kilogrammes of cocaine, according to the prosecution.&nbsp;

The raid took place in a warehouse in the city of Arlon in Belgium's southeast, where the suspects were discovered trying to conceal cocaine for export under concrete slabs, according to a statement from Belgian prosecutors.&nbsp;

According to the statement, five of the prisoners were taken into custody in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, one in Luxembourg, and another in Serbia.

Nine arrested in international operation against Serbian drug network

Colombia, the world's leading&nbsp;cocaine&nbsp;producer, broke its own record for coca leaf cultivation in 2021, a UN body said Thursday, as the government highlighted the "failure" of the US-led war on drugs.

There was "an increase of 43 per cent in the area planted with coca... from 143,000 hectares in 2020 to 204,000 ha in 2021," the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said in a statement.

This was the highest figure since the UNODC started monitoring&nbsp;Colombia's&nbsp;cocaine&nbsp; production 21 years ago.

The increase in coca cultivation went hand-in-hand with a rise in&nbsp;cocaine&nbsp;production from 1,010 tonnes in 2020 to 1,400 tonnes last year, destined mainly for the United States and Europe.

"This continued an upward trend that has been consolidating since 2014," said the UNODC.

At the presentation of the report in Bogota, Justice Minister Nestor Osuna said the numbers were clear evidence "of the failure of the war on drugs."

He said the government was working on a new drug policy, which for now would not include legalizing&nbsp;cocaine.

But he expressed the hope that "one day" the&nbsp;cocaine&nbsp;trade will be regulated at a global level.

As part of a new approach, Colombia's leftist President Gustavo Petro has mooted an amnesty for drug traffickers willing to give themselves up and abandon the trade.

He has also proposed purchasing arable land to redistribute to small farmers to make a living from legal crops, free from the violent yoke of the drug gangs they rely on to make a living.

Holistic approach

Petro considers small-scale coca growers the victims of a state that for years poisoned their land with pesticides to eradicate the illegal plantations.

Thousands of coca growers and pickers are behind bars on trafficking charges in Colombia.

Petro's predecessor, Ivan Duque, had been a key ally of the drug war led by the United States -- the world's leading&nbsp;cocaine&nbsp;consumer.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Petro in Colombia, saying afterwards they shared "extensive common ground," despite the new president's change of tack.

"We strongly support the holistic approach the Petro administration is taking," Blinken said after the meeting.

"On both the enforcement side but also on the comprehensive approach to the problem... I think that we're largely in sync," he added.

The UNODC said coca cultivation "continues to threaten the cultural potential of the country and its biodiversity," contributing to deforestation.

Half of the plantations are in special management areas, it said, and a high percentage on the lands of black communities and in forest reserve areas.

A record 1.8 tonnes of cocaine was seized from a warehouse in Lagos by Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. According to the agency’s spokesperson, the street value of these drugs is an estimated $278.5 million. Additionally, they have also arrested 5 people in connection with the raid. These drugs were reportedly headed to customers in Europe and Asia.&nbsp;

The drugs were found, on Sunday, in a residential estate's warehouse, said the authorities. According to reports, West Africa is a major transit hub for cocaine made in Latin American countries and sold in Europe.&nbsp;

This agency, on Monday, indicated that the drug raid came after years of investigation and the people arrested are the members of an international drug syndicate that they have been tracking since 2018 in coordination with the US Drug Enforcement Administration. They have also described it as one of the largest drug busts in the country ever.&nbsp;Reportedly, among those arrested were four Nigerians and one Jamaican citizen.&nbsp;

Peruvian authorities made a major drug bust when they seized 1 tonne of cocaine on Tuesday (Juen 21). The drug bust was made &nbsp;at the Valle de los Ríos Apurímac, Ene y Mantaro. There have been three operations by the Peruvian police in which drugs in huge quantities were seized. The total drug haul weighs 1448 kg (3192 lbs).

These drug busts took place in three different regions - Junin, Ucayali and Ayacucho. During one raid, armed agents opened fire at a drug lab andseizes cocaine, two vehicles and two suspects.

Battle with drug cartels is an ongoing problem for authorities in South America. The drug cartels are well armed and even have political support due the money and muscle they have to often bribe or intimidate local politicians. The drugs are smuggled to major illegal markets in countries like US and more.

On Tuesday (June 21), a drug trafficker known as the "Pablo Escobar of Brazil," was arrested in Hungary. He was on the run for more than a year.

Sergio Roberto de Carvalho, known simply as "Mayor Carvalho," was arrested in cooperation with Interpol and Hungarian police, Brazil's Federal Police said in a statement, describing him as "one of the biggest international traffickers today."

According to Brazilian media, Carvalho is a former policeman who has long lived in Europe under a false identity.
