<p>The grand event that is to take place in Mamallapuram, between 29th August and 10th July is expected to attract more than 2,000 visitors from 180 countries. However, teams from China and Russia will not be taking part in this edition of the event.</p>

<p>Notably, Mamallapuram, the host town is also the one that witnessed a bilateral summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in October 2019.</p>

India: 500-year-old Lord Shiva idol seized in Chennai city, was to be sold for $3.2 million

<p>Srikanth, 58, and Anuradha, 55, were brutally killed hours after returning from the United States to their home in India's southern city on Saturday, May 7.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their city home was also broken into.&nbsp;Their bodies were discovered&nbsp;by police in their farmhouse outside Chennai.</p>

<p>Following an investigation, it was discovered that the perpetrator was a guy named Krishna, who had worked as a driver for the couple for over ten years.</p>

<p>The couple moved to the United States in November of last year, and except for a brief visit by Srikanth, they were gone until Saturday, May 7.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Krishna had been working for them as a live-in driver, according to the police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the day of their homecoming, Krishna had picked up Anuradha and Srikanth from the airport on the day of their return and driven them to their residence in Chennai's Mylapore.</p>

<p>Photos and videos of the blaze and resultant smoke have been doing the rounds on social media. According to those that work in IT parks overlooking the marsh and dump yard, the blaze began around 1 pm on Wednesday. From the afternoon onwards, distinct clouds of smoke are seen rising from the locality, where the dump yard is situated.</p>

<p aria-hidden="true">According to Jayshree Vencatesan, Managing Trustee, Care Earth, the ongoing fire is the largest in recent decades. However, she adds that fires in the dump yard are recurring phenomenon and are mostly man-made. She points out that these fires are often started by ragpickers and others with access to the dump yard, so as to reduce the volume of the trash and sometimes it is done to burn off the plastic and collect the metal scrap.</p>

<p>"We have a garbage dump in a natural habitat of bird and plant life. This place is a potential candidate for a 'Ramsar site'(Ramsar identifies wetlands of international importance, especially those providing waterfowl habitat). The toxic fumes choking the air in the region will cause havoc in the long term as the residue will remain for a long time. The heat and air pollution generated by this fire will also cause extensive damage" Jayashree added.</p>

<p>In her complaint raised on Twitter tagging the police, the woman, who is supposedly from different ethnicity, alleged that the cop misbehaved with her when was strolling at a beach with her friend at Sea Shell Avenue in southern Chennai city.</p>

<p>The woman claimed that was pulled off by the cop because she was present at the beach beyond the stipulated timings.</p>

<p>"The most disrespectful thing he told is 'Go and roam in North India after 10 o’clock',” the woman in her Twitter post said.</p>

<p>Well into the third wave of the pandemic and resultant lockdowns, well-to-do city-dwellers have learnt to live by themselves and work remotely, while conveniently having food delivered to their doorsteps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent Sunday total lockdown (January 9) was the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu's first shutdown of the year, and it went off without a hitch.</p>

<p>For those that want fancy dishes delivered from a multi-cuisine or exotic restaurant, it’s easily done in a few taps and clicks. But, what if it’s the plain and humble gruel (locally known as Kanji) that you’re looking for? How do you get it amid a total lockdown?&nbsp;</p>

<p>For those that aren’t well aware, gruel isn’t something that is greatly desired as a meal. Owing to its bland nature, it is recommended, especially when people are ill or on some kind of medication. Of course, there are also a few who enjoy the thin porridge and consume it as a favourite.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sadly, many don’t have the luxury and freedom to pick and choose. Gruel is a means of keeping body and soul together.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Sunday, a serpentine queue was seen outside Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Government hospital, which is right opposite the iconic Chennai Central railway station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Men, women, young, aged, locals, and travellers were among those seen waiting for their turn to collect the wholesome and nutritious meal that was being served at a pushcart, operated by the Barter trust.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At noon, nearly 500 people had collected their meals from the cart, in less than an hour. While most came with vessels in hand, those that travelled from afar had none. Even they didn’t return with empty hands or an empty stomach, the volunteers manning the cart had provided them vessels as well.</p>

<p>"Our snack shop is just a short walk away from the General hospital… We’ve often seen attenders of poor patients and those with severe illness request for gruel at hotels and in shops like ours.. they never used to get it as its not part of the hotel menu… most patients need it as they are intubated and can’t have solid food… In fact, it was to cater to them that we started providing gruel right outside the hospital" K.Rajeev, tells WION.</p>

<p>Operating three snack shops and a small hotel, Rajeev says, it’s divine intervention that he’s been able to keep the service running every single day for nearly seven years, despite various challenges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Owing to the total lockdown on Sunday and anticipating the plight of those arriving from other states via train, the cart supplied breakfast (pongal, vada), lunch (gruel, variety of rice, sweet) and dinner (idiyappam and coconut milk). With the government hospital canteen also closed, the cart had to feed nearly 1,000 people throughout the day. Rajiv shells out nearly Rs.7000 per day to prepare the meals and get them distributed via his volunteers. This cost may go up or down depending on how many people they serve and the dishes they provide. However, he’s hopeful that he can continue the service, with God’s grace, as his primary hotel and snack business gradually expands.</p>

<p>"Among those who approach us are patients undergoing post-operative care, battling cancer, undergoing dialysis, etc… Most can’t even afford to travel back to their homes... How can we let them go hungry?" Rajeev asks, filled with compassion. On about five days a month, the meal expenses are sponsored by good Samaritans, on the occasion of birthdays, death anniversaries etc. On the remaining days, the costs are borne by Rajeev himself. Subramanian, 194 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Chennai on Tuesday, whereas the number is expected to go well past 250 on Wednesday. This comes at a time when the Omicron variant is showing increasing prevalence across Indian cities.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-changed="false" data-paragraphid="35">As per the government health bulletin issued on Tuesday, 43 cases of Omicron have been recorded in Tamil Nadu, of which 16 patients are undergoing treatment and the rest have been discharged from hospitals.</p>

<p data-changed="false" data-paragraphid="36">Referring to the possible emergence of more Omicron cases, the Minister added that 129 samples where S-Gene drop (an indication of an Omicron case) was observed were sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune. However, the final confirmation of Omicron in these samples has yet to be officially ascertained.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zoo officials the Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) near Chennai maintained that “five ostriches died all of a sudden on October 27.</p>

<p>The zoo is home to 32 ostriches, of which five have succumbed to an illness, which is currently unknown, according to officials.</p>

<p>In-house vets and teams from the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University&nbsp;arrived at the zoo to provide treatment to the sick ostriches, even as examination of bacteriology, virology and toxicology samples are also being carried out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It’s been four days since Indian fishermen Rajkiran, Xavier and Suganthiran left from their respective homes in the Kottaipattinam fishing hamlet in Southern state of Tamil Nadu.</p>

<p>The fishing boat they were traveling in sunk near the Delft island (between India and Sri Lanka), owing to what the Sri Lankan Navy calls "a collision" with their Navy craft.</p>

<p>While the respective families of the fishermen and their community continue to wait for the return of Xavier and Suganthiran (who were arrested by the Lankan Navy), the family of Rajkiran would have to wait for a body bag.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the course of the week, the fishing community from Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai districts in Tamil Nadu have been protesting what they call a "deliberate action of colliding and sinking the Indian fishing boat". They allege that the latest incident bears total resemblance to an incident from January this year where a Lankan navy boat had allegedly crashed into an Indian fishing vessel, thus leading to the capture and torture and death of its four crew members.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Their boat capsized because of them (Lankan forces). This was not an unexpected incident like they have bene projecting. Their navy has radars and a collision like this cannot happen. They chased the boat and it ended up like this. Sri Lanka is responsible," complains Prabhakaran, a fisherman who is said to have been traveling on another boat, that was near to the ill-fated one.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The announcement of having retrieved the mortal remains came on Wednesday afternoon. However, as of Friday evening, there seems to be no indication of their impeding return. Fishermen community members were hoping to get back their two men and the mortal remains of the third fisherman&nbsp;by Friday evening — repatriation is usually done by night, so as to prevent law and order&nbsp;issues. However, they feel that their wait would be longer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Representatives of the Indian Traditional Fishermen Federation are aggrieved over what they refer to as the "inaction of the central&nbsp;and the local government". They particularly feel let down by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin, who had strongly voiced concerns of fishermen and made promises to help them, while he was an opposition leader. "Two days after this latest incident, our Chief Minister has written to the central government asking them to work towards securing the release of two fishermen and for retrieving the body of the third fishermen. However, it’s ironical that he sent this letter nearly eight hours after media reported about the body being retrieved from sea. When he was an opposition leader, he would shoot letters instantly," wondered a fishermen community leader who spoke to WION.</p>

<p>Regarding this incident, the Sri Lankan Navy has maintained that "the Indian vessel was poaching in Sri Lankan waters, across the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), on Monday." They added that the collision occurred when the Lankan navy craft was chasing away Indian fishing boats. "One of the Indian fishing trawlers, with aggressive manoeuvres, in resistance of chase away, was on an attempt to evade from the scene making it collided with SLN Craft in operation. In the process, it ultimately descended having lost its stability as well as due to the rough sea condition,” read the Lankan Navy statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The issue between fishermen in Tamil Nadu and the Lankan navy has been a long-standing and thorny one. It is often alleged that Indian fishermen deliberately head to Lankan waters — where the quality and quantity of catch is better —&nbsp;and indulge in bottom trawling, an unsustainable fishing practice that affects the ecology and marine life in the long-term.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka maintains that arrests of foreign fishermen are being done to protect the livelihood of their own fishing community. Recently, Lankan fishermen from the northern part of the island country had protested, demanding their government to act against Indian fishermen who were trespassing into their waters. They made attempts to pressure the Indian and Sri Lankan authorities to act against those involved in illegal fishing.</p>

<p>According to India's National Traditional Fishermen Federation, the latest incident involving the Sri Lankan Navy is seen as deliberate retribution for another recent untoward incident, which involved an Indian boat. A few weeks back, a large Indian fishing trawler from Tamil Nadu had collided with and had sunken a smaller Lankan fishing boat. While the Lankan boat was fully damaged and lost, the Lankan fishermen survived and returned to the shore. It is believed that, had the&nbsp;Tamil Nadu government taken some action against the errant Indian boat and offered compensation to the Lankan fishermen, things would have been amicably resolved. Indian fishermen believe that holding talks between them and their Sri Lankan counterparts would help resolve some of the misunderstandings that are based on the recent collision and alleged trespass.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We had set up a team of vets from Tirunelveli and technical experts according to the guidance issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority Guidelines for capture. Cages and tranquillizer darts were also kept ready, and we formed four teams. We spent hours combing the area where the tiger cub was last spotted. Later, a few tea estate workers informed us that the cub had taken refuge in an abandoned building in their premises, following which we tacked the tiger,” Ramasubramanian said.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the mammoth effort of 150 personnel in clearing the bushes and conducting searches amid the heavy rain, the cub was finally captured late on Tuesday night. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Owing to its weak condition and the risks involved in using a tranquillizer, the forest department staff and experts caught the tiger cub in a net and covered its eyes and face (to prevent it from behaving aggressively) and move the cub to a treatment facility in Rottikadai, nearly 10 kilometres from the captured area in Valparai.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Examination by the veterinarians revealed that the cub was injured by porcupine quills and the tiger’s faeces indicated that the big cat had eaten a porcupine. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The forest official said the feline would later be released into the woods after it recovers completely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The decision to release the cub or keep it under captivity is to be taken by the NTCA and the Chief Wildlife Warden of Tamil Nadu, after the cub completes close to a week under observation” Ramasubramanian added. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Asked about the whereabouts of the cub’s mother and siblings, he replied that forest staff are looking into whether the cub was abandoned or got lost. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The Anaimalai tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu is home to about 25 tigers and the region where the cub was captured is home to anywhere between 7-10 tigers. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The ATR spans across parts of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Dindigul districts of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Known as the ‘Detroit of India’, Chennai and its outskirts are home to several automobile manufacturing and allied industries. Major global players such as Ford, Hyundai, Renault-Nissan have had to shut factories temporarily and cut down production by a significant percentage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the first COVID-19 wave (2020), the Central government had enforced a pan-India lockdown. Back then, automobile industries were shut down for months together, following which they resumed as curbs were gradually relaxed. This meant that work happened in a staggered fashion and fewer employees worked at the factories.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the second wave, however, as per orders of the Tamil Nadu government, automobile industries were permitted to work, by categorising them under Continuous Process industries.</p>

<p>This meant they were permitted to function even during the total Lockdown when cases were at their peak. Major automakers shut their plants for a few days, but again resumed production, at a considerably lesser rate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Employees Union representatives of various automakers that WION spoke to outlined the impact of working amid the pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Muthukumar, President, Hyundai India Employees Union, nearly 750 persons turned positive in the 2400 strong Hyundai factory near Irungattukottai, leading to 10 deaths. After this explosion of cases, workers had to be sent on leave for a while and then they followed a system of three days work and three days off. The plant which rolls out nearly 1400 cars in a day (3 shifts), now produces about 800 cars in (2 shifts).</p>

<p>For American major Ford, which operates a plant in Maraimalai Nagar, work had already been slightly hit owing to the global silicon chip shortage. About 250 COVID-19 cases and three deaths were reported among 3,000 of its employees. This meant that the plant was fully shut a few times, each for over a week, during the ongoing lockdown. According to a leader of the Chennai Ford Employees Union, their plant which produces about 780 cars per day (across 3 shifts) is now rolling out around one-third of that number, while working only a single shift. He adds that some of their component manufacturers too have been working amid the lockdown, to cater to the carmakers’ needs.</p>

<p>At the Renault-Nissan factory, the collaboration between the French and Japanese carmakers, 700 out of nearly 8000 workers were infected. This resulted in five deaths. After the employees approached the Madras High Court, it was decided to operate the plant at 75% capacity. Moorthy, General Secretary, Renault Nissan India Workers Union said that amid the current lockdown, their plant was making about 600 cars per day, as opposed to the usual 860 units.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Only a small percentage of staff at these factories have been vaccinated in company-organized camps.<br />

The rest are yet to get their shots, owing to prevailing COVID-19 vaccine shortage in Tamil Nadu and also partly owing to vaccine hesitancy.</p>

<p>Factories in Chennai, have been churning out cars meant for the local market and for export. This has been going on at a time when Tamil Nadu is witnessing the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Tamil Nadu which witnessed nearly 7000 daily cases during the peak of the first wave, saw up to 36,000 daily cases in the second wave. Chennai city alone witnessed nearly 7,000 daily cases as per the government figures. Currently, the daily cases are around 25,000, yet they are the highest numbers among all states in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In stark contrast, large automobile factories of these global automakers not operate during the lockdowns in their respective home countries.</p>

<p>They were all shut for months on end. While uncertainty looms over whether Tamil Nadu’s existing lockdown (until June 7th) would be further extended, it is quite clear that the auto plants will continue to roll out vehicles.</p>

<p>However, the workers say that irrespective of the precautions taken, their nature of work does not help in maintaining six feet physical distance. The workers maintain that at least two persons need to be in close proximity during the assembly of a vehicle. They strongly feel that, in the interest of their and their families lives, factories need to be shut until the COVID-19 second wave subsides significantly.</p>

<p>According to the authorities, on May 26, five lions housed in the Animal House 1 of the Safari Park area of the zoo were reported to show loss of appetite (anorexia) and occasional coughing. Following this, an in-house veterinary team along with those from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University(TANUVAS) took immediate action and offered treatment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The big cats'&nbsp;blood samples and nasal swabs were sent to TANUVAS. Rectal swab and fecal samples of the 11 lions were sent to the National Institute of High Security Diseases (NIHSAD) Bhopal, which is among the designated institutes to take up SARS COV-2 testing in captive animals.</p>

They were sent on Friday to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad.</p>

<p>The zoo authorities maintain that they have been following the precautions issues by the Central Zoo Authority, the Central and the State Governments from time to time.</p>

<p>They also stressed that measures to prevent diseases (prophylactic measures) are being undertaken for the different families of animals such as felids (cats), mustelids (mammals of the weasel family), viverrids (small-medium mammals), and primates. These disease preventive steps are said to be taken in consultation with experts from TANUVAS, Veterinarians of Hyderabad Zoo, and Bronx Zoo.&nbsp;</p>
