Lok Sabha Election 2019: Voting in 95 constituencies in 2nd phase today

The Madras High Court on Monday quashed the proceedings of land acquisition for the 8-lane Chennai-Salem Expressway project that was announced in early 2018 by the AIADMK. The court said that the project requires a mega realignment as the proposed route would have an adverse effect on environment.

A special bench of Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Bhavani Subbarayan passed the order allowing a batch of petitions by 35 land owners and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss.

With an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore, this infrastructure project had been a major political issue in the southern state that goes to polls on April 18.

The project had been facing stiff opposition from farmers and environmentalists.

The proposed 8-lane 277-km greenfield expressway was aimed at cutting down travel time between Chennai and Salem by a little over two hours and reducing the distance by around 68 kilometres. As per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), it was meant to pass via five districts, namely Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem.

However, the project faced opposition from various groups on the grounds that the 7500 acres of land, which will be acquired for the project, includes agricultural land, villages, orchards, and reserve forests. Land acquisition and compensation for the same were major roadblocks. The protesters were also of the opinion that this project would not be necessary as there are three highways currently connecting the state's capital city with Salem.

While the AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami was keen on having this project implemented, the opposition party DMK had stood with the protesters and also said that they were against its implementation. Interestingly, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss was among those who had earlier filed a case against the project. But despite their differences, the PMK in February joined hands with the AIAMDK-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu and will be contesting from seven seats.

Speaking to reporters after the verdict this morning, Advocate Kamaraj who represented the farmers said, "This verdict is for the farmers and the public and it would cause a setback for the state government."

Reacting to the verdict, while campaigning in his constituency Dharmapuri, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said, "Though we are in an alliance with the AIADMK, we are against this project and support the cause of the farmers."

With barely two weeks left for the polling day (April 18th) in Tamil Nadu, Election commissioners Ashok Saxena and Sushil Chandra along with Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) Satyabrata Sahoo, met the media and &nbsp;clarified their stance on issues ranging from seizures of unaccounted cash, raids on residences of political leaders and also the controversy over the sudden seizure of to-be-released books on the Rafale scam among others.&nbsp;

The officials said that they have concluded their 3-day review in Tamil Nadu for forthcoming elections. ”During our visit, we met all political parties and all deputy commissioners, collectors, police officials and senior officials of the state Government among others. These include officials of Income Tax, RBI, Excise and taxation department, Narcotics control bureau and the airport director and all others involved in enforcement activities”.

Speaking of the important issues listed by political parties, they mentioned that, people belonging to weaker sections should be provided security to cast vote freely and fairly, CCTV cameras within the booth and outside the polling station, Bye-elections for the vacant assembly seats, provision of adequate minimum facilities such as supply of water, and tents at polling booths to help voters brave the summer.&nbsp;

Regarding the confiscation of to-be-released books on the alleged Rafale Scam, the officials responded saying that, it was brought to our knowledge through the electronic media, we were informed that CEO had not authorized this kind of action by flying squad. The concerned flying squad has been changed and the Book launch took place in the evening. All officials associated with that incident have been removed, we are awaiting a full report.&nbsp;

Responding to questions on the rampant cash seizures across Tamil Nadu and their alleged political links, they said, &nbsp;whenever such seizures are made, the preliminary report is given to EC. The EC doesn't name anyone or any party, but after the report, there is a comprehensive procedure of law enforcement that is to be followed. We are finding that so far cash seizure of Rs.127crore has been reported in TN. This is much more than previous elections. Prosecuting is done after comprehensive enquiry, &nbsp;EC doesn't prosecute. &nbsp;

Enlisting the challenges faced by the EC in conducting the polls across the country they said, Sheer scale and size are a challenge. We have 10.35 lakh polling stations, 12 million people involved in the conduct of elections, Informing people of new technology that is adopted and preventing the use of money and muscle power.

The officers also responded to the reports of the candidate Mohanraj who had declared his cash holding as 1.76 lakh crore and liabilities as 4 Lakh crore world bank loan. They said, “Whenever a candidate files his nomination papers and gives document in the laid down format, the returning officer is responsible and empowered to take a decision. If there is a deficiency in the affidavit or nomination form, the returning officer can inform of deficiency and decision to accept or reject is finally of the returning officer. He/she &nbsp;need not go into veracity, as it involves a long process of adjudication.”

Mobile applications such as cVigil and Suvidha are also being used for the effective interface between the ECI and voters, candidates. While the Suvidha application facilitates single window clearance from rally and vehicles, cVigil&nbsp;enables all to take pictures or videos of illegal activity or model code violation and it goes straight to control room and a response can be expected within 100 minutes.

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/ttv-dinakaran-floats-new-party-ammk-with-cooker-as-party-symbol-35895">TTV Dhinakaran</a> released his party’s second list of nine candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The leader also released a list of candidates for the 18 vacant seats in Tamil Nadu’s Assembly.&nbsp;

Considering today’s list and the first list released by the party, it has totally fielded 38 candidates to the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, 17 candidates for the 18 vacant Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

One Lok Sabha constituency, central Chennai, would be allocated to their ally the Social Democratic Party of India.

TTV Dhinakaran is no stranger in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as he had earlier represented the state as a Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP while being associated with the AIADMK.&nbsp;

He is also the nephew of &nbsp;V K Sasikala, who was the aide and confidant of former chief minister Jayalalithaa. After being expelled from the AIADMK, post the demise of Jayalalithaa and the jailing of his aunt V K Sasikala, he floated his outfit the AMMK (which was not registered with the ECI) and vowed to fight against the AIADMK.

It was in late 2017 that he shot to prominence after winning the prized R K Nagar Assembly constituency, which fell vacant after Jayalalithaa’s demise in late 2016. Contesting as an independent, TTV was able to defeat the candidates of both Dravidian majors, the DMK and AIADMK by a huge margin.&nbsp;

He proved to be a major challenge for the AIADMK when 18 of the party’s MLAs withdrew support to chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in September 2017. However, the Assembly Speaker disqualified these dissident MLAs under the anti-defection law.&nbsp;

A long court battle ensued regarding the validity of the disqualification until it was finally upheld in October 2018. This was seen as a setback to the TTV Dhinakaran because if the MLAs had been reinstated to the house, they would have proved detrimental to the strength of the EPS-OPS led-AIADMK.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION after the disqualification, Dhinakaran said that it was not a setback but just an experience.&nbsp;

TTV’s party gains significance in the upcoming polls as they would be contesting sans a major alliance, but in the constituencies of the 18 disqualified MLAs, they could pose a serious challenge for the bigger parties.&nbsp;

TTV also has a major support base in the Thevar community, which is a dominant caste, that is spread across South Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

Given that TTV lays claim to the legacy of the AIADMK, the party could cut a chunk of the AIADMK votes, which could in-turn become beneficial to the DMK.&nbsp;

However, TTV also faces a major setback as his party does not have a common symbol and their representatives would have to contest of different symbols, as independents.&nbsp;

The 11th year celebration at Chennai’s KM Music Conservatory, run by Oscar winner AR Rahman, couldn’t have gotten better, as one of institute’s student 12-year-old pianist, Lydian Nadhaswaram brought home glory by winning the inaugural edition of the CBS ‘World’s Best Show’.&nbsp;

Lydian has been training at the Conservatory in Chennai for the last five years under a scholarship programme. It was here that he mastered the Russian Piano style under the tutelage of Dr Surojeet Chatterjee.&nbsp;

Lydian is a familiar name across the music circles in Chennai, but he shot to fame and became a YouTube sensation after appearing in the Ellen DeGeneres show.&nbsp;

His latest feat at the World’s Best Show involved competing with solo and group artists from over 190 countries, who were much more senior in terms of their age and experience.&nbsp;

But the ‘Little Maestro’ ended up winning hearts and eventually the coveted trophy along with a million dollars, thanks to his unparalleled ability. &nbsp;His six performances included playing two pianos simultaneously, playing the piano blindfolded, playing the piano at breathtaking speeds of 325 beats per minute.

Lydian’s association with music begins right from his very name. His musician father Varshan Sathish derived his first name from the Lydian Mode which is a seven-tone musical scale and the latter half from the Nadhaswaram, which is a traditional, auspicious South Indian wind-musical instrument.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION, Lydian’s father Sathish said, “Lydian started playing the drums as a two-year-old and since then there has been no looking back.”&nbsp;

Save for his brief stint at UKG, Lydian does not have a formal education, as his father did not believe in the concept of making little children wake up early and leave for classes. Instead, he believed in nurturing their natural talent. Lydian’s sister too is a flautist and vocalist. His father plans to home-school Lydian under the National Institute of Open Schooling, after he turns 15.&nbsp;

Speaking at the anniversary event, Lydian reminisced the time of his enrollment at KM Music Conservatory as an 8-year-old, with the aim of learning to play tabla. But eventually, he also ended up getting better at playing the drums, piano and bass guitar.&nbsp;

I joined KM for tabla. Responding to questions about his performance at the global stage, he said, ''I wasn't nervous at all and I was happy to be there and perform. It was a great experience to compete with performers who held several Guinness World records. I also had the opportunities to meet and interact with several talented people and veteran International judges.''

Hailing the achievement, Principal and Founder of KM Music Conservatory AR Rahman said, “Lydian success is India's success and he should become a Music Ambassador for India. This achievement brings the special cultural, artistic value of people of Chennai to the whole world.''

Recalling his first meeting with Lydian, he said, ''I met him several years ago at a music release function where I was the Chief Guest and he was playing the drums there, he came across as a phenomenal musician.'' Rahman also emphasized that Lydian is only at the start of his journey and that he should perform on global stages.&nbsp;

At a time when praises are being heaped on his son, Sathish speaks on what went into the making of such talent. ''Lydian practices for over six hours a day in order to master his abilities, develop new ones. Not having a TV at home ensures he remains focused on his goals.'' A major part of support and encouragement in this journey came from Michael Novogratz, a well-wisher from New York who had gifted Lydian a Steinway and Sons Piano, which is considered as the world’s best piano and costs over a crore, he added.

A few months before he turns 13, Lydian has a World’s Best trophy that he can call his and is also to be certified the Youngest Steinway Piano Player. But Lydian remains focused on his ambition of being an independent musician and a composer for animation films. &nbsp;

With an aim to spread the awareness about self-examination and early detection of breast cancer, the team took over the mammoth task of braiding and attaching 450 meters of pink-coloured synthetic hair to an individual’s natural hair.&nbsp;

The feat was attempted using pink synthetic hair in order to the spread awareness about breast cancer and underline the importance of early detection to cure the debilitating disease at an early stage.&nbsp;

Before the record was attempted, a workshop was conducted with the support of medical professionals who explained the process of self-examination to over 500 women.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION, Menaka Ramkumar - an event organizer and the CEO of Da Extentionzz - said, “By training the beauticians in self-examination we would be able to spread the knowledge to the larger community via those women who visit these beauticians.” She also said that pink synthetic hair was used as opposed to natural human hair which is used to make wigs and is much more expensive.”

The record attempt did not have a specified deadline or time limit, however, the task had to be completed in a single session. 3 Hours and 11 minutes was the time taken by the team of qualified beauticians and hairdressers to complete the hair extension job. The team conducted multiple rehearsals prior to the attempt in order to perfect the process.&nbsp;

Mahalakshmi Kamalakkanan, an event organizer and proprietor of a beauty salon said, “Cancer patients lose their confidence after hair-loss during chemotherapy and I understood this when my senior staff Tamil Selvi was battling cancer. Hence, it is also important to spread the word about synthetic wigs”. Instead of battling cancer at an advanced stage, women must be proactive and aware of self-examination, she added.

Cyclonic storm 'Gaja' makes landfall in Tamil Nadu; over 75,000 people evacuated

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has initiated a series of preemptive and proactive measures to prevent loss of lives of fishermen as cyclone 'Gaja' intensified into a severe cyclonic storm Thursday, the Defence Ministry said. Around eight ICG ships and two Dornier aircraft were pressed into action since November 9 for issuance of advisories and warnings in local languages to fishermen at sea for their safe return to ports, it said.&nbsp;

The Coast Guard Remote Operating Stations have also requested fisheries authorities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to account for all fishing boats.&nbsp;

"The ICG conducted series of community interaction programmes in Kanyakumari, Mandapam, Rameswaram, Cuddalore, Chennai, Nellore, Nizampatnam, Uppada and Vishakhapatnam to sensitise fishermen and coastal population for taking safety measures for the impending cyclone," the statement said.

Veteran Tamil journalist and publisher Nakkeeran Gopal was on Tuesday detained by Chennai police at the airport over a complaint filed by Governor Banwarilal Purohit's office over his publication's reportage on the Nirmala Devi case.

Chief Editor of a Tamil bi-weekly magazine 'Nakkeeran,'&nbsp;Gopal was detained around 8.15 am from the Chennai airport.

He was reportedly travelling to Pune to attend an event. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko, who reached outside the Chintadripet police station where Gopal has been detained, said, "I sought permission to meet him but police are not allowing me. This arrest shows the threatening attitude of the authorities towards independent journalists. Is there Governor's rule in the state? I blame the state government."

Devi, a college professor, was arrested earlier this year for allegedly asking her students to extend sexual favours to university officials in exchange for financial and academic rewards.

Employees said the companies had employed a large number of contract workers to get around rigid Indian labour laws that make it difficult to hire and fire full-time staff and have refused to bring them on company payrolls even after years of contract work.

The unrest is the latest to hit the state of Tamil Nadu, dubbed the Detroit of South Asia because big automakers such as BMW, Daimler, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan and Renault have factories in the state.

"Our main demands concern low wages, contract employees not being made permanent and workers being denied basic respect," said S Kannan, Kanchipuram district president at the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, one of the leaders involved in organising the strike at Yamaha.

Kannan said that talks to resolve the strike had made no progress.

A spokesman at Yamaha, which sells in India as well as overseas, said that production is running below capacity.

Yamaha has a 4 per cent share of India's two-wheeler market. It sold about 793,000 motorcycles in the past financial year and exported about 252,000.

Wages are low in India, making it an attractive manufacturing and export hub for companies, but workers feeling the effects of rising inflation have been agitating in recent years for higher pay.

"The issue is not widespread. It is in pockets, but it is a cause of concern, especially since it is an industrial belt," said an executive at a global automaker.

In May protests turned violent at metals conglomerate Vedanta's copper smelter about 400 miles from Chennai over alleged environmental violations that the company said underlined the risks global businesses face in India.

The government has tried to overhaul labour laws, hoping to create millions of new jobs and boost economic growth by making it easier to hire and fire, but has faced resistance.

Workers at Eicher Motors, which owns the Royal Enfield motorcycle company, are protesting one such scheme, the National Employability Enhancement Mission (NEEM), said R Sampath, vice-president of the Royal Enfield Employees Union.

"The scheme stops contract workers from becoming permanent employees, allows management to keep wages low and fire people with one-month's notice," said Sampath, adding that contract workers do not receive other employee benefits.

Royal Enfield, which has about a 4 per cent share of the two-wheeler market and sold more than 800,000 motorcycles in India over the past financial year, is "hopeful of arriving at a mutually beneficial solution", it said in a statement.&nbsp;

"We have forums that address matters related to the wellbeing of workmen and are working to understand the issue that compelled a few workmen to refrain from reporting for work today," the company said.

The farmhouse spread across seven acres reportedly took three years to build.&nbsp;

Shane Watson's ton helps Chennai lift 3rd IPL title, Twitter goes wild

Hyderabad scored a decent 178 for six against Chennai in the Indian Premier League final at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.&nbsp;

Skipper Kane Williamson left behind his poor form and played a captain's knock to settle the team.&nbsp;

Unlike other games, Kane took few balls to settle and then went for big shots. He made 47 runs in 36 balls which included five fours and two sixes.&nbsp;

He fell just three runs short to reach his 9th IPL half-century and gave away his wicket to Karn Sharma.&nbsp;

Later it was Yusuf Pathan and Carlos Brathwaite's cameos which helped Hyderabad cross the 150 runs mark. Pathan remained unbeaten and made 45 runs in just 25 balls. His inning included four boundaries and two sixes.

Brathwaite, on the other hand, smashed three sixes to reach 21 runs in 11 balls.&nbsp;

However, he gave away his wicket on the last ball of Hyderabad's innings while trying to hit another six for the team.&nbsp;

Opener Shikhar Dhawan too contributed 26 runs.

For Chennai, apart from Deepak Chahar, every other bowler took one wicket apiece. While it was Bravo who turned out to be the costliest today, as he gave 46 runs in his four overs.&nbsp;

Earlier, MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to field bowl against Hyderabad in the final of the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, at the Wankhede stadium.
