It is also home to the Fort St George, the first British fortress in India.

Chennai's Marina beach is the longest beach in the country. Being a hub of one-third of India's automobile industry, the city also got a nickname "The Detroit of India".

Madras Day: Chennai turns 380 years old

Rains lashed several parts of the city and its neighbourhood on Sunday bringing huge respite to the drought-hit Chennai.

A local resident, Suresh Balaji said, "This rain has brought relief to us. Although it is raining very little. If people follow water harvesting during this time then it will really help us in the future."

Puviyarasan, the Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre told ANI, "Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to receive moderate rainfall for the next 48 hours. Since July both the places have received 16cm of rainfall, usually, it is 18cm."

"There are no special warnings for fishermen in Tamilnadu," he added.&nbsp;

Heavy rainfall is predicted during the next 24 hours at most places over coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka and at a few places over the north interior of the state, the IMD said on Sunday.

"Heavy rain very likely to occur during the next 24 hours at isolated places in Karnataka," the IMD said.

The districts which are expected to receive heavy rainfall are Hassan, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagara, Mysore, Mandya Tumkur and Kolar.

Out of the 22 flood battered districts, the maximum deaths have occurred in Belagavi, where 15 people were killed.

According to data, at least 14 people remain missing.Rescue teams deployed in the state have rescued over seven lakh people till now, the report stated.&nbsp;

Chennai is known as "Detroit of India" since it is the automobile hub of the country. But faced with a severe water crisis, the auto firms are now coming up with newer ways to cut down on water consumption.

Automobile service centres in the city are avoiding the use of water to wash the vehicles. But this doesn't mean that the job is shoddy - vehicles are returned spic and span. What these service centres are using is called the dry wash method.

"For water wash we spend a minimum 50 litres of water per vehicle. On an average, 35 vehicles are water washed resulting in wastage of 1500 liters of water. Whereas in dry wash, we use 700ml of water and 300ml of dry wash liquid. This mixture can be used to clean seven to eight vehicles," said Prabhu Jayaraj, service manager at a Royal Enfield outlet in Chennai.

Even car makers are adopting the new method to service customers’ vehicles. "The water crisis in Chennai needs to be proactively addressed and Nissan is doing its bit by temporarily stopping the water wash facility across our dealerships," said Atul Aggarwal, General Manager, after sales, Nissan India.

"Yes (I am upset). Because I did not receive the postal votes on time", Rajinikanth said.

The bi-annual South Indian Artists Association was held on June 23 as per the orders of the Madras High Court. Nearly 1,604 actors and actresses, including top actors Kamal Hassan and Vijay, cast their votes.

However, Rajinikanth missed out as he was in Mumbai for shooting for his upcoming flick 'Durbar'.

On learning that their 4-year-old daughter was missing, the parents frantically searched in the vicinity of their Thirumullaivoyal residence, near Avadi in Chennai. The mother had left the little girl home-alone for a while as she had to leave her 7-year old son at a nearby tuition class on Thursday evening.&nbsp;

On returning home and not finding their daughter, a complaint was filed in the nearby Thirumullaivoyal Police Station.

Later, a rice sack that was stuffed in a bucket of water was found in their bathroom. The girl was murdered and the body was stuffed into a sack bearing the name of a rice company. Based on the preliminary investigation, the police suspect that she was sexually assaulted before being murdered. The crime had taken place when her father was away at work and her mother and sibling were at the tuition class.&nbsp;

Senior police officials visited the house and examined the crime scene. Forensic experts collected samples from the girl's body and from the house.&nbsp;

On questioning the residents in the area, they claimed to have seen a neighbour, who is also related to the family, to have been near the house when the girl was left alone. The person in question is a 60-year old who is an ex-serviceman.&nbsp;

The police have detained him for questioning. The girl's body is said to have borne blood stains and has been sent for post-mortem at the Government General Hospital; the results are awaited.

Restaurants go traditional way to save water in parched Chennai

"I thank the Kerala Chief Minister, but 2 MLD water will not be sufficient. We are every day supplying 525 MLD water (in Chennai) and if 2 MLD water could be given every day, it will be useful for the people," he said.

"The four lakes that supply water to the city have dried up, the government has drawn up a plan to implement to bring water from Jolarpettai through railway. We'll get daily 10 MLD of water for the supply,"&nbsp;he added.

"Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Sholavaram and Red Hills reservoirs in Chennai have dried up and despite that supplies were being made to the people," he said.

Krishna water from Kandaleru in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh was also not being realised in its full capacity, the Chief Minister said, responding to reporters' queries on the water situation.

They include using disposable plates in the cafeteria, procuring packaged drinking water, closure of non-critical washrooms and toilets, restricted availability of water in wash basins among others.&nbsp;

Some firms are shifting to Air cooled chillers from water cooled chillers, closing down the gym and arena in order to reduce water consumption by the cooling plant.

Speaking to WION, Sowmya, an employee with a firm in Sholinganallur said, “recycled water is being used for flushing toilets and watering the plants, additional equipment has been installed in every tap to restrict the water flow and all restrooms are fitted with these”.&nbsp;

Besides these measures, the company has also been sending weekly awareness emails informing about the current crisis and providing conservation tips, she added.

“Wash basins where we wash our utensils after lunch in the cafeteria have been closed, only the hand wash is open and that too with a restricted flow” Krupa Ranjani an employee working in ELCOT SEZ told WION.

Rahul Pareek who works for a firm in Kandanchavady said, “the new floor that was inaugurated at our premises uses automatic taps. Even on existing taps, the water flow has been decreased to ensure judicious use”.

Though Chennai has endured and overcome the peak summer heat all-though May, there seems to be no let up in the temperature in June with mercury hovering around 41 C. With wells, reservoirs and water sources in the vicinity of the city drying up, options are running out and all that the city can do is to hope for rains.

Companies along Chennai’s IT corridor ratchet up measures to reduce water consumption amid severe shortage

The Tamil Nadu Government has issued an order permitting shops and establishments to remain open for 24 hours, all days of the year. Prior to the passing of this order, only certain establishments such as &nbsp;IT companies, hospitals, pharmacies and factories could stay open all day and all year.&nbsp;

The order comes as a boon to Shopkeepers and traders associations that had been urging the government to permit 24-hour operations.

Ravi, president of Chennai hotel association said that he viewed this development in a positive light for the hoteliers and traders alike.&nbsp;

''For over 20 years we have been fighting to get this permission and a case was also filed in the Madras High Court, as some shopkeepers are asked to shut their shops by the police after 10pm. Henceforth, there will be an increase in our income and we will make necessary arrangements for additional staff, night shift to provide freshly cooked food and refreshments in the wee hours as well,'' Ravi added.

However, this order is for a period of three years and could undergo changes and also has clauses on increasing protection for women workers. The conditions also state that every employee shall be given one day holiday in a week, employees should be provided with restrooms, washroom, safety lockers and other basic amenities.

To enhance women’s safety it is stated that women employees shall not be required to work beyond 8pm on any day in normal circumstances. Provided that the employer after obtaining the written consent of a woman employee shall allow her to work between 8pm and 6am subject to providing adequate protection of her dignity, honour and safety.&nbsp;

It also mentions that, ''Transport arrangements shall be provided to the woman employee who works in shifts. A notice to this effect shall be exhibited at the main entrance of the establishment indicating the availability of transport.''

The announcement was met with equal enthusiasm from the employees working late hours, night-shifts and those that prefer to venture out for a late-night meal.

''It will definitely be very helpful for IT employees, when we get back home very late we can’t go cook and we only look at restaurants. Hereafter, we don’t have to restrict ourselves to the handful that are open,'' said J Sowmya, a techie. Maybe those that work in the wee hours can take a break and step out for a meal. It also feels safer while walking on the roads late in the night, when shops are open and there’s a considerable crowd.&nbsp;

With eateries and restaurants all set to benefit from the increased revenues from longer hours, the government can cheer about better productivity and higher tax revenues, while customers also have a reason to relish as they could grab their favourite meal or urgent groceries at a time of their choosing.

"It is likely to move northwestwards along and off Sri Lanka coast during subsequent 72 hours and reach near north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast on April 30," it added.

On Thursday, the IMD had issued a ‘red alert’ for Tamil Nadu on April 30 and May 1.

Weather experts have predicted that Tamil Nadu coast, including Chennai, and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy rainfall from April 30 for three days. Kerala will also receive rainfall.

"Strong winds are expected in the state from Friday. A yellow alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Malappuram on April 29," the MET office said.

The fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
