Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 32-year-old had also retired in 2021 but reversed his decision earlier this year to play in 2024 T20 World Cup. The pacer, however, called his retirement 'inevitable.'

"After careful consideration, I have taken the difficult decision to retire from international cricket. These decisions are never easy but are inevitable. I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan Cricket to new heights!" wrote Amir on social media platform X.

"Representing my country has been and always will be the greatest honour of my life. I would sincerely like to thank the PCB, my family and friends and, above all, my fans for their continuous love and support," he added.

Amir came on to the international scene as one of the hottest pacers in world cricket after his debut in 2009. The left-arm fast bowler, however, was soon mired in match-fixing controversy and was subsequently banned for five years from international cricket.

He made a return after the ban was completed in 2015 but could never live-up to the hype there was at the time of his debut.

Amir went on to play 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is for Pakistan, taking 119, 81 and 71 wickets, respectively. His one of the memorable spells in international cricket came in 2017 Champions Trophy final when he took 3/16 against arch-rivals India - dismissing Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan as Pakistan lifted their second ICC silverware.

Amir made his last appearance for Pakistan in the T20 World Cup during Men in Green's final game of the group stage against Ireland. He ended the tournament with seven wickets in four matches.

Pakistan's star pacer from Champions Trophy 2017 final win vs India announces retirement

The saga surrounding the Champions Trophy 2025 is over as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved the hybrid mode, meaning India will not travel to Pakistan for the coveted tournament. The decision came on Friday (Dec 13) evening through prominent sources as the tournament is finally set to get a green light. On the other hand, the deal also means Pakistan will not travel to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Champions Trophy to be held in hybrid model

After a series of meetings in Dubai last week, a deal was struck between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ICC, meaning neither India nor Pakistan will play in the backyard of their arch-rivals. As part of the deal, PCB is reported to get an added share in revenue. While the venue and the structure of matches remain in limbo, it is reported that one semifinal and the final will be staged in Dubai alongside India’s matches.

However, if India fail to make the knockout stage of the tournament, the entire knockout stage will be hosted by Pakistan.

How will the format work?

With two groups of four teams each, India’s three group stage matches will be hosted in UAE’s Dubai International Stadium according to early reports. The venue will also serve as host for at least one semifinal and the final if India reach the knockout stage. Teams getting drawn with India will have logistical issues to face as they will have to travel between Pakistan and UAE during the tournament.

Apart from Dubai, three other venues for the tournament include Pakistan’s Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi.

If everything goes according to plan, the Champions Trophy is set to start on scheduled dates of February 19 with the final taking place on March 8 in Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Champions Trophy 2025: ICC approves hybrid model after long saga, India to play in Dubai - Report

India’s Jay Shah is all set to take charge of his first meeting as the chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (Dec 5) as he begins the new term. Shah officially took office on Dec 1 succeeding Greg Barclay and became the latest Indian personality to head the ICC. While his first meeting will be part of officially taking over the office, the suspense surrounding the Champions Trophy could be on the table.

Shah to host first meeting

After Barclay pulled out of the race for the top spot in ICC in September, Shah became the chairperson of the ICC board of directors with office officially beginning on Dec 1. Shah will be joined by the 16 directors of the ICC on Thursday as they aim to start the functioning of his reign. However, the main focus could be the Champions Trophy as the schedule is yet to be confirmed despite less than 90 days remaining for the coveted tournament to start.

As things stand, the tournament is set to go ahead in a hybrid model which has been accepted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, their latest demands have not gone well with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and other members of the ICC. PCB has conveyed that they won’t be traveling to India for any ICC events in the future and will play in a hybrid model against their arch-rivals.

However, according to the report the demand was denied by all the members present which include 12 full member nations, three associate nations and the ICC Chairman.

If the hybrid model is made official, India is likely to play its matches in UAE or Sri Lanka with Pakistan hosting the rest of the tournament. One of the semifinals and the final of the Champions Trophy will also take place in hybrid model to accommodate India, in case they reach the later stages of the tournament.

New ICC Chairperson Jay Shah to hold first meeting as Champions Trophy fate hangs in balance

The commotion regarding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 refuses to die down. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clearly stating that they won't send Team India to Pakistan, the hosts for next year's mega event, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was offered to accept a hybrid model.

PCB has shown willingness to accept the proposal. In a recent ICC meeting, they have urged the governing body to follow the same model when the upcoming ICC events will be held in India. India is set to host the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, and 2026 T20 World Cup (along with Sri Lanka).

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, it is understood that the PCB has put forward the proposal over the weekend in meetings with the ICC and BCCI in Dubai.

They have urged for an equitable and long-term agreement -- going beyond the Champions Trophy -- with similar provisions for Pakistan to play outside of India during ICC events held there. However, it is unclear whether such provisions are aimed for the next three years or until the end of the current rights cycle, in 2031.

As of now, there has been no response from the BCCI but indications are that the Indian cricket board is not willing to accept adopting a hybrid model for their tournaments, citing no security issues in India.

In either case, the ICC Board will examine the PCB proposal before making a final call for next year's Champions Trophy (also regarded as the mini World Cup). After the final decision is out, both PCB and BCCI will have it ratified by their governments. The next ICC meeting on this matter is tentatively scheduled for Thursday (Dec 5), with a final decision set to be out soon.

Earlier, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had told reporters on Sunday (Dec 1) in Dubai, "We will do whatever's best for cricket. If we adopt any other formula [except hosting the tournament in Pakistan], it will be done on the basis of equality. The most important thing for Pakistan is its respect; everything else is secondary."

"A one-sided arrangement is no longer acceptable. It cannot be the case that we continue to go to India, but they do not visit Pakistan. Whatever happens must be on the basis of equality," he added.

The last edition of the Champions Trophy was held in 2017, in England and Wales, with Pakistan winning the coveted title for the first time.

Champions Trophy 2025: PCB open to hybrid model, urges same for events in India

UAE's ambassador to India Abdulnasser Alshaali has said that his country will be happy to host any India-Pakistan Champions Trophy matches in 2025. Speaking to our correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the ambassador said, "We have always been hosting cricket matches. We are very big on cricket."

The comments come at a time when Pakistan has been creating a deadlock over the Indian proposal of Indo-Pak matches on a neutral venue (hybrid model). Pakistan will be hosting the Champions Trophy next year & India has said that it will not send its cricket team to the neighbouring country over deteriorating security conditions.

The ambassador pointed, "UAE is always going to be open to business and open to sports and matches. We would be happy to host it (Indo-Pakistan Champions Trophy matches)."

UAE has previously hosted cricket matches involving both teams, especially when there's been a need for a neutral venue. For instance, during the 1980s and 1990s, Sharjah in the UAE became famous for hosting cricket tournaments where India and Pakistan frequently played each other. UAE is seen as a neutral venue for Indo-Pakistan matches, as it has significant diaspora from both countries which provides for the large audience. Full interview:

Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India, UAE relationship going forward?

Abdulnasser Alshaali: Much stronger, it will always be stronger. You know, it's always challenging to think of new ways to do things between the two countries, because we have done too much, and we have done so much already, and I think this is always going to be something that would keep us working hard.

Sidhant Sibal: UAE is a country where cricket matches have been played in the past. Now, when it comes to the Champions Trophy, there is a bit of controversy. But what's your view regarding any India, Pakistan match? Any proposals of India, Pakistan match in UAE? How will you see it as?

Abdulnasser Alshaali: We have always been hosting cricket matches. We are very big on cricket, and we're very big on sports generally. And the UAE is always going to be open to business and open to sports and matches. We would be happy to host it.

Sidhant Sibal: So you will be happy to host any India, Pakistan Champions Trophy match in UAE?
Abdulnasser Alshaali: Of course.

Sidhant Sibal: Now talking about India, UAE relationship, something we have been talking about, about the aviation bit, if you can elaborate as to what is the status, given the fact that you are very keen to have more aviation linkages with India.

Abdulnasser Alshaali: So we do have a plan. Just need to sit and discuss it with Indian government officials, aviation industry. I do believe, I truly do believe, that it will create a situation for both countries. We have considered all angles. We have made sure that this is a strong proposal, a very fair proposal. And I do believe that once they have presented this proposal and discussed it with stakeholders, they will see what we are trying to do.

Sidhant Sibal: Are there any high level visits being planned? The EAM was in UAE. Are there any plans for the visit of the UAE foreign minister?

Abdulnasser Alshaali: So there are always plans for high level visits. Next month, we are expecting the deputy prime minister and the foreign minister of UAE, and hopefully also 2025 we will have more high level visits.

Sidhant Sibal: My final question on the India, Middle East, Europe corridor that was launched here in New Delhi, UAE, India linkages, what is the update?

Abdulnasser Alshaali: Meetings are happening. Discussions are taking place. They're just looking at the moment, at infrastructure that will connect all of those ports and the logistics of it across all the countries of both and to see that they should all be at a similar level of cooperation. The conversation is going on, but we're also, what we have also, have also done recently is that we started talking about the IMEE corridor as part of UFI, the UAE, France, India, trilateral dialog. So that we make sure that we are looking at every single aspect of it, every single angle, making sure that we are covered in terms of connectivity, in terms of even having alternate routes in case there was disruption somewhere in the region. So this is all going, it hasn't stopped for whatever reason, as I'm sure over the coming year or so, you will see some progress.

Happy to host India-Pak Champions Trophy matches: UAE Ambassador Alshaali

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to accept the hybrid model for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 after India's refusal to travel to Pakistan. The development reported by news agency PTI also mentioned some demands by the PCB if the board were to accept the hybrid model for the upcoming ICC event.

"The current situation is that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has said that it will only accept hosting the Champions Trophy on a hybrid model if the board agrees that in future all ICC events will be on same system with Pakistan not going to India to play matches," reported PTI quoting a PCB source.

"Pakistan also wants the ICC board to increase its financial cycle share of revenues from 5.75 percent and Naqvi is insistent on this but he has not sought any additional hosting fees," the report further added as per the source.

"Pakistan has taken only one stance and that is in future, it will also not play in India in any ICC events and the Hybrid model should be applied for all future ICC events that Pakistan and India will play their games at neutral venues," he said.

If accepted, India is likely to play its matches in UAE under the hybrid model including the semi-final and the final, given they qualify.

Both countries do not play bilateral cricket due to political tensions. The two sides have only met in ICC events since 2012.

India had decided not to play in Pakistan during the Asia Cup 2023 last year as well and the tournament was played under a hybrid model with India's games being scheduled in Sri Lanka.

Pakistan, however, travelled to India for the ODI World Cup 2023 immediately after the ODI WC and hoped for India to return the favour.

The Champions Trophy is expected to be played from February 19 to March 9 across three venues in Pakistan: Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore.

Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan ready for hybrid model under conditions - Report

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had an eventful Friday (Nov 29) as they were forced to postpone their meeting without a conclusion with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the hosting rights of Champions Trophy 2025. However, according to the latest reports, PCB is set to accept the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy or risk losing the entire hosting rights of the tournament. ICC has given PCB until Saturday to decide on their latest stance with them mostly likely to agree on the hybrid model.

Champions Trophy in hybrid model?

According to a report by India Today, ICC has given PCB to mull over the hybrid model in the next 24 hours. In case they don’t accept the hybrid model, Pakistan will risk losing the hosting rights and therefore, expected revenue in multiple million dollars. PCB will be reluctant to miss out on hefty revenue and could be tempted to host the Champions Trophy in a hybrid model.

What happened in today’s meeting?

With the meeting scheduled for 4:00 PM IST, the meeting was attended by members of all parties including the PCB and BCCI with few members attending virtually. However, after a request from two PCB directors, the meeting will now take place on Saturday. The meeting lasted less than 60 minutes with a possible solution likely to be out on Saturday.

As things stand, the ICC still has three options to decide on the outcome of hosting the Champions Trophy. The best possible option is hosting the CT 2025 in a hybrid model with India playing its matches outside Pakistan while the rest of the teams play in the Islamic nation.

With less than three months to go before the scheduled start of the tournament, ICC has been sweating to reach an agreement with either PCB or BCCI. The BCCI is firm on not sending its cricket team to Pakistan after the External Affairs Ministry denied permission. On the other hand, PCB is also firm on hosting the tournament entirely in Pakistan and is not agreeing on a hybrid model. While a solution was to be met in Friday’s meeting, a request from PCB directors to host the meeting on Saturday was agreed upon.

"Pakistan believes sports should not be politicised. We are going to host the champions trophy next year in Pakistan. We hope all teams participate. The same position has also been communicated to ICC," a letter from Pakistan's EAM read.

India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal commented on the Champions Trophy venue row on Friday, referring to the BCCI’s statement of not sending the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team to Pakistan due to security concerns.

Champions Trophy 2025: ICC meeting with PCB, BCCI postponed until Saturday after request from board members

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has backed the stance of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over their stance on hosting the Champions Trophy 2025 in a hybrid model on Thursday (Nov. 28). Afridi took to his X handle to back the PCB as the International Cricket Council (ICC) tries to find a solution to host the tournament after India refused to travel to Pakistan. With the Champions Trophy set to be played between February 19 and March 8, the ICC will need to find a quick solution, or else a postponement could be on the cards.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier in the month informed the ICC that they won’t be travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy while the same was conveyed to the PCB. The BCCI is pushing for a hybrid model that will see India’s matches take place at a neutral venue with one semifinal and final (if India reaches the respective stage) also taking place away from Pakistan.

However, that request has been rejected by the PCB, which is pushing to host the entire tournament in Pakistan.

In the meantime, ICC will have to quickly find a solution if they are to stage the tournament in the given window of February and March. On Friday, ICC will host a joint meeting with PCB and BCCI as it tries to find a solution to host the Champions Trophy.

‘Europe’s best-performing team’ Liverpool aim to pile pain on Manchester City

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has called a board meeting on November 29 to decide on the venue of the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 event. The tournament, originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan, has been in limbo ever since India's refusal to travel to the country.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send India to Pakistan after the Government of India denied the permission given the political tensions and the same was communicated to the ICC about two weeks ago. Pakistan, on the other hand, is steadfast on hosting the tournament entirely in the country and has not accepted the BCCI's demand to host it under a hybrid model – thus the stalemate.

As per cricket news website ESPNCricinfo, the apex body hopes to reach a conclusion on November 29 in the board meeting. The ICC board constitutes representatives from 12 full states, three representatives from associates, an independent director and the CEO and chairman as well.

This would also be the last board meeting under outgoing chief George Barclays who is set to be replaced by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on December 1.

The ICC, because of the stalemate, hasn't even announced the dates or schedule of the tournament.

Champions Trophy 2025 moving out of Pakistan? ICC calls board meeting to decide on final venue

Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar believes that India are coming to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The statement is in contrast with Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) official stance, according to which the board has asked the tournament to be played under hybrid model.

"Pakistan has got a tag that it cannot host big tournaments like World Cup. If this (Champions Trophy) happens it will be a stepping stone for bigger events. I don't think this will happen. Keeping the fingers crossed. Wait till the last moment. I think currently, as of now, India is coming to Pakistan," said Akhtar in a conversation with a local channel as quoted by news outlet NDTV.

Akhtar also said that there will be back channel talks and the hope for a solution shouldn't be lost.

The report also said that the schedule of the tournament would be out soon as well.

'Haven't received any...,' PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi on ICC stance on Champions Trophy schedule

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will halt in seven Pakistan cities for the Champions Trophy tour as reported on Saturday (Nov 16) with Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) dropped. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reluctant to travel to Pakistan, ICC decided to pull the trigger on the trophy tour. The trophy tour will also have a stoppage in India in January 2025 before returning to Pakistan for the final tournament in February.

CT trophy to tour in seven cities

The trophy will now visit Taxila, Khanpur, Abbottabad, Murree, Nathia Gali, and Karachi, following its launch in Islamabad on Friday, an ICC itinerary confirmed. According to the ICC, the prestigious silverware will journey across the eight participating nations during its 70-day global tour, providing unique experiences for fans. Interestingly, despite the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announcing they were to tour PoK, the event was later cancelled as ICC intervened.

Champions Trophy to be held in hybrid model?

As things stand, with less than three months to go for the Champions Trophy to start Pakistan is not yet confident of hosting the entire tournament with the Indian team reluctant to travel. Pakistan’s proposal to host India’s matches including the final has been rejected by the BCCI, leaving ICC with three options.

Like 2008, the Champions Trophy could be postponed until a solution is met as the ICC could explore the idea. On the other hand, India’s reluctance to travel could force them out of the tournament if they are forfeited. However, that option looks unlikely due to India’s brand value in cricket and Jay Shah set to become the chairperson of the board of directors of ICC.

The hybrid model remains the best option and likely option to host the Champions Trophy with India’s matches to take place outside Pakistan while the rest of the seven teams play in the nation.

Champions Trophy: No PoK cities on ICC's trophy tour route, stopover in India in Jan 2025

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been instructed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to abandon plans for a Champions Trophy tour in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The move follows concerns over the region's political sensitivity and international implications. As a result, the planned tour has been officially cancelled, marking a significant setback for the PCB’s ambitions to host the event in the disputed territory.

ICC Forces Cancellation Of Champions Trophy Tour In Pakistan

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is left in limbo as less than three months remain before the Champions Trophy officially starts. Scheduled to be played from February 19 to March 8, seven teams have confirmed participation in the tournament, while India is reluctant to participate if the entire Champions Trophy is held in Pakistan. This leaves the ICC with a major issue to resolve, creating uncertainty over the tournament’s future.

ICC with a decision in hand

Currently, apart from India, all nations have given green signal to play in the Asian subcontinent. However, India is insisting on a hybrid model and has cleared their stance by writing to the ICC of their intent to not travel to Pakistan for the coveted tournament. In this case, the ICC has two major options to settle the issue and clear the air over the Champions Trophy.

Postpone Champions Trophy

The most likely and favourable option for the ICC is to postpone the tournament for a future date until a compromise is reached between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the hosting issues. While India is reluctant to travel to Pakistan, PCB on Tuesday wrote to the ICC that they will not stage the Champions Trophy in a hybrid model and will host all matches in their homeland.

“India must give solid grounds and reasoning for not coming to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. If other teams can come to Pakistan, why can’t India?” the details of the letter included.

“Champions Trophy will be held only in Pakistan, we will not be accepting a hybrid model. Previously, when teams refused to attend matches elsewhere, the match was considered forfeited and points were given to the opponent team as we have seen in the past. Also, when a team has refused to attend matches elsewhere, as per the rule, the next in line team has been considered for the tournament itself,” PCB’s letter further added.

In case the Champions Trophy is postponed, it will be the second time that Pakistan will face such a situation. In 2008 ICC decided to pull the trigger and take away the hosting rights from Pakistan after a period of unrest in the nation due to terrorist activities. South Africa instead hosted the Champions Trophy in 2009 September.

Unlikely option: Exclude India

If ICC decides to go according to their rules and regulations, India’s reluctance to travel could see them either get excluded from the tournament or get their matches fortified. However, ICC is unlikely to take this step considering the brand value of the Indian Cricket Team. Having the Indian team excluded could see them missing out on huge revenue from television rights, digital rights and stadium ticket sales. ICC will not take a hit on its revenue model as India remains a major player in the market.

Also from December 1, BCCI secretary Jay Shah will take office as the new chairperson of the ICC board of directors. This means he won’t favour an ICC tournament without India.

Champions Trophy: What steps can ICC take if India and Pakistan don't reach a compromise over current stand?

Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has called for 'egos to keep aside' for the growth of cricket amid scheduling drama around the ICC Champions Trophy. Afridi's statement comes as India and Pakistan are in a stand off position after the former's refusal to play in Pakistan – the host of Champions Trophy 2025.

"Cricket is at a crucial crossroads, facing perhaps one of its greatest challenges since the late 1970s. Now is the time to put differences aside and let the game unite us. If countries once divided by history can come together in the Olympic spirit, why can’t we do the same for cricket - and for the Champions Trophy?" wrote Afridi on his official X handle.

"As stewards of this game, we owe it to cricket to keep egos in check and focus on its growth and spirit. I hope to see every team in Pakistan for CT25, to experience our warmth and hospitality, and to leave with unforgettable memories that transcend the field," the post further read.

'Have been told...,' PCB on Pakistan's government response on India not coming to Pak for Champions Trophy

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has said that if India don't come to play to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy then the hosts should get the points for the match but no hybrid model should be deployed. The statement comes as India have made it clear that they won't be going to Pakistan and the hosts are not ready go for the hybrid model.

"Do you remember that in the 1996 World Cup Sri Lanka got 2-2 points after West Indies and Australia did not go. Try to put India and Pakistan in different pools, the ICC will refuse. Pakistan and India are always in the same pool because of money. If there is a hybrid model and India don't visit Pakistan, give Pakistan two points. It has happened before too, so try it now," Basit said on his YouTube channel.

Try to ban Pakistan if you have the courage. Everyone will lose their sleep," he added. The drama was always bound to happen as the two countries don't play any bilateral cricket due to political tensions between them. India had also refused to play the Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan and the tournament later was played under hybrid model with India's matches being played in Sri Lanka. Pakistan, however, did travel to India for the ODI World Cup 2023 and expected India to return the favour. The PCB referred India's decision to their government and the Pakistan government has told PCB to avoid any cricket with India. The ICC Champions Trophy is expected to be played from February 19 to March 9.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday (Nov 12) wrote a letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on their stance to host the 2025 Champions Trophy. Exclusively learned by WION, the PCB is reluctant to compromise on their hosting bid and wants to stage the entire Champions Trophy in Pakistan after India refused to travel to the nation. The PCB is also reluctant to compromise on the hybrid model which enables an unofficial co-host to stage India’s matches.

PCB reluctant to compromise

According to WION’s Anas Mallick, PCB has given certain grounds for their non-compromise stance which also includes the exclusion of India from the Champions Trophy if they don’t travel to Pakistan for the tournament.

Currently, the ICC is in limbo considering neither India nor Pakistan is ready to take a step back from their demands. This could result in the postponement of the Champions Trophy 2025 until a solution is found. Pakistan's refusal to play in a hybrid model comes after they saw the majority of their Asia Cup 2023 matches moved to Sri Lanka despite them being the official host. The hybrid model also saw Sri Lanka host the Asia Cup final.

The Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9 with eight teams participating while India’s participation still remains in limbo.

CT 2025: PCB pens letter to ICC after India refuses to travel, says 'we will not be accepting a hybrid model'

The Champions Trophy 2025 is in limbo after India refused to travel to Pakistan with less than three months to go for the coveted International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. As things stand, neither Pakistan nor India are on the same page which could result in the postponement of the tournament. The Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9 with eight teams participating while India’s participation still remains in limbo.

Champions Trophy to be postponed?

Currently, neither Pakistan nor India are taking a step back from their current stance, meaning no compromise is yet to be reached on the tournament's location. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is determined to play the entire tournament in its own backyard providing India flexibility of Lahore as their venue (geographically closer to India). However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reluctant to travel to Pakistan but has kept doors open for a hybrid model.

However, it is the ICC that is in limbo now considering neither is ready to take a step back from their demands. This could result in the postponement of the Champions Trophy 2025 until a solution is found. Pakistan has also refused to play in a hybrid model having seen the majority of the 2023 Asia Cup matches move outside the nation despite being the official host.

Not the first time Champions Trophy could be postponed

In 2008, owing to terrorist attacks in Pakistan and a state of unrest, the ICC decided to pull the trigger on the hosts and postpone the Champions Trophy. The tournament was postponed to 2009 and was hosted by South Africa where Australia defended their crown. If a solution is not found the ICC will be left with two options- either to postpone the Champions Trophy 2025 or replace India with the next best unqualified ODI team.

Considering India’s commercial value in cricket in terms of TV and digital market, the latter option is highly unlikely. Also with Jay Shah assuming office as the Chairman of the Board of the ICC, the decision will mostly likely favour India.

Champions Trophy 2025 in limbo after India refuses to travel to Pakistan

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has urged the Rohit Sharma-led team management to consider picking Varun Chakravarthy for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy.

Chakravarthy has been in roaring form since his comeback in the national side and picked up a brilliant 5 for 17 in India's narrow three-wicket loss to South Africa in the second T20I, of the four-match series, on Sunday (Nov 10), in Gqeberha. Following Chakravarthy's heroics, DK shared a post on X and urged India to pick the in-form spinner for next year's ICC event.

"If India don't pick VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY for the Champions Trophy, then they are making a grave error. Outstanding Bowler he is turning out to be," Dinesh Karthik wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Chakravarthy became the fifth Indian bowler to pick a five-fer in T20Is following the Gqeberha tie, where India failed to defend 124-6. Despite his heroics, Suryakumar Yadav-led Men in Blue failed to defend a below-par score as Tristan Stubbs' 47 and Gerald Coetzee's 9-ball 19* propelled Proteas to a series-levelling win. Since Chakravarthy's international comeback, during the home T20Is versus Bangladesh in Oct, he has had a dream run. He has claimed 13 wickets in five games so far, at an average of 8.84 and an economy of 5.75. Given the Champions Trophy is nearing, it will be interesting to see if India springs in a surprise and includes him in the squad.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cancelled an event related to the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan due to 'scheduling issues.' This comes after reports of India deciding not to travel to Pakistan for the tournament and PCB's chief Mohsin Naqvi's statement saying 'not ready to accept hybrid model.'

The cancelled event, where ICC was expected to flag off the tournament officially, has now been put on hold until the situation sorts out, read a report on cricket news website Cricbuzz.

"The schedule is not confirmed, we are still in discussions with the host and participating nations on the Champions Trophy schedule. Once confirmed we will announce through our normal channels," said the report citing an official as a source in the know of things.

The PCB, however, has downplayed the controversy and a source in the same report hinted that the cancellation could have been due to the soaring pollution levels in Lahore.

"It was only a trophy tour flag off and tournament/branding launch," said an official in a Cricbuzz report. "That (the event) is still in the works -- though may be rescheduled because Lahore outdoor activities are difficult right now," the source further added.

The scheduling conflict was expected as both India and Pakistan do not play bilateral cricket due to political tensions. Last year, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the regional Asia Cup as well but Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup which followed soon after.

A report in the Indian media has stated that India is not going to travel to Pakistan and instead seeking Dubai, UAE as the option to play their matches.

Naqvi, however, has said that there's been no official communication from the Board for Control for Cricket India (BCCI) regarding India not coming to play the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The PCB chief also warned India of consequences in future if India do not travel to Pakistan for the ICC tournament.

"If we get a letter from India, I'll have to go to my government and have to abide by their decisions. Pakistan has shown great gestures to India in the past, and we'd like to say clearly India shouldn't expect such friendly gestures from us every time [if they refuse to come]. 'If they don't come...,' PCB chief on reports of India not coming to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has submitted its first draft of the proposed schedule for the 2025 Champions Trophy to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (Nov 7). Pakistan, set to host the Champions Trophy has proposed several venues including Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The stadium has also been proposed to host India’s group-stage matches and the final of the Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy is set to take place from Feb 19 to Mar 9 with India’s participation yet to be confirmed.

PCB proposes Lahore for India’s matches

According to WION’s Anas Mallick, PCB on Thursday submitted the draft schedule that includes staging all of India’s matches in Lahore. Situated in the Punjab province, Lahore is geographically the closest city to India with an international cricket stadium, providing flexibility to the Indian team to travel back to their homeland within a few minutes, in case Rohit Sharma’s men disagree on staying in Pakistan.

Lahore has also been proposed to host the final of the Champions Trophy further helping the Indian team to stay in proximity to their homeland in case they reach the final.

The Indian cricket team has not travelled to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup as diplomatic relations between the nations hit low after the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

The PCB is determined to host the entire Champions Trophy in Pakistan thereby avoiding a hybrid model which was in use when Pakistan was the host of the 2023 Asia Cup. The model allowed India to play its matches in Sri Lanka while other nations played in Pakistan.

The proposal further adds the curtain-raiser clash will be hosted in Karachi between hosts Pakistan and Australia. India will kick start their campaign against Bangladesh in Lahore on 20th February while playing New Zealand on 23rd February. The high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan will take place on March 1 in Lahore.

Considering India’s chances of reaching the final, the showpiece contest could take place on March 9 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. India’s clash against New Zealand could be moved to Rawalpindi if broadcasters request, added a PCB source while speaking to WION.

Champions Trophy: PCB submits proposed schedule to ICC; Lahore to stage India's group matches including final

England Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Richard Gould and chairman Richard Thompson say that the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy without India will not be in cricket's interest. The statement comes as India are yet to answer on their participation in the ICC event which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in February-March next year.

"It would not be in cricket's interests for India not to be playing in the Champions Trophy," Thompson said as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

"It's interesting, with Jay Shah - the former secretary of the BCCI and now chair of the ICC - [who] is going to have a big role to play in that. There's geopolitics, and then there's cricketing geopolitics. I think they'll find a way. They have to find a way," he added.

India and Pakistan do not play bilateral cricket due to political tensions between the governments of two countries. Last year, India refused to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup and the tournament was eventually scheduled in the hybrid model with Sri Lanka hosting all of India's matches including the final.

Pakistan, however, did travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup later in the year and is expecting India to travel for the Champions Trophy next year.

"If you play the Champions Trophy without India, or Pakistan, the broadcast rights aren't there, and we need to protect them," Gould said.

"They [Pakistan] are the host nation. We've seen the developments going on, and we're all waiting to understand whether India are going to travel. That's the key. We think there are some discussions and relationships where they need to be. I know Pakistan are expecting India to travel. There are lots of different alternatives and contingencies available if that doesn't happen," he added.

As of now, Pakistan has marked Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore as the venues of the tournament with all of India's matches being played in Lahore.

'They'll find a way,' says ECB chair on India travelling to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has refuted the reports claiming a change in the venue of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in case India qualifies for the title match. Pakistan are scheduled to host the ICC tournament in February-March next year with India's participation under clouds given the political tensions between the neighbouring countries.

“Despite the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, the PCB remains steadfast in its stance to ensure a successful and uninterrupted tournament,” clarified the PCB in a statement as reported by Pakistan's local DunyaNews.

"There is absolutely no truth to the reports suggesting that the Champions Trophy final could be moved outside Pakistan. We are working diligently to ensure that all preparations for the tournament are on track, and we are confident that Pakistan will be able to host a memorable event," it further added in response to a report published in the Telegraph UK.

The report had suggested that the final could be moved to Dubai, UAE from Lahore if India qualifies and the relocation of the semi-final was also under consideration.

India and Pakistan do not play bilateral cricket given the animosity between the two nations and only face each other in the ICC tournaments.

Last year, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the regional Asia Cup and eventually, its matches were held in Sri Lanka. Pakistan, however, had travelled to India soon after for the ODI World Cup 2023.

As per the draft schedule, the PCB has earmarked Lahore as the venue for all of India's matches including the final and semi-final, should India qualify.

Recently, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi also expressed confidence in India travelling to Pakistan for the tournament.

'We are confident...,' PCB on reports claiming change in venue for Champions Trophy final if India qualify

Former England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan feels the Jos Buttler-led side would require the services of Test skipper Ben Stokes and red-ball specialist Joe Root for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy (CT). The mega event is set to be held in Pakistan early next year. Morgan, who will be seen in action in the International Masters League in India in Nov-Dec, feels Stokes and Root's availability will bolster England's chances to win their maiden CT title. Root hasn't been part of the ODI setup for long, having played his last game in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Stokes, on the other hand, came back from ODI retirement for last year's WC and his 50-over future remains unclear since.

Recently, Stokes stated that he hasn't received a call from England head coach Brendon McCullum about his ODI future. Morgan feels both Root and Stokes should get a call-up for CT 2025.

"Ben Stokes has already said that he hasn't had the call yet from Baz as to whether he will play or not," Morgan said at the launch of the International Masters League in Mumbai on Tuesday. He further opined, "If that call comes, obviously he would love to play. In my eyes, they've got to come into a major world tournament and look to win it, and that means trying to find the best team - and for me, Stokes and Root are in that best team."

Morgan also lauded the Harry Brook-led England side for the fight shown in the recent home ODIs versus Australia, which they lost 3-2. He stated, "At the moment, I'm happy to back the younger players. In the recent series against Australia, they found a template. Australia, you have to commend how good they are at the moment in all formats of the game. But when you put them up against a side that, at stages, didn't have [Jofra] Archer, no Wood, Stokes and Root as well, no Buttler, that's half your England team."

"The run chase at Durham (England were chasing 305 in the third-ODI), when Harry Brook scored that magnificent hundred and then just went on to find his feet as captain and the template that they found in that game, I thought, is one that really suits the players that they've selected. I would encourage them to continue with that template and look ahead to the Champions Trophy," Morgan added.

At present, both Stokes and Root are part of England's Test squad for the ongoing three-match series versus Pakistan, in Pakistan.

'Don't see them...,' PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi on India traveling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has predicted a debacle for Babar Azam-led Men in Green in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. The upcoming ICC event will be held in Pakistan early next year, with the hosts placed in Group A along with arch-rivals India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, whereas the other group comprises South Africa, Australia, England, and Afghanistan. Basit feels it will be a 'huge achievement' for the hosts and defending champions to reach the semifinals. He has also predicted sacking of white-ball coach Gary Kirsten soon after the mega event.

Basit said on his YouTube channel, "Congratulations to Gary Kirsten. He will be at the helm of the team till the Champions Trophy. However, he will be fired after the Champions Trophy. I am saying this now that it will be tata, bye bye for him. It will be a big achievement for Pakistan to make it to the top four. They have also stepped into the politics of Pakistani cricket. They won't be successful."

Kirsten kicked off his two-year stint as Pakistan's white-ball coach in May 2024 with Pakistan's four-match T20I series loss to England, in England and Wales. It was a dress rehearsal for the 20-nation T20 World Cup, held in West Indies and the USA. In the showpiece event, Babar & Co. lost to USA and India before wins over Canada and Ireland. However, it was too late for them as they bowed out in the group stage, not even making it to the Super 8s.

Pakistan, i.e. the fourth-ranked ICC ODI side, have a herculean task in the upcoming Champions Trophy at home. They have fared poorly in recent ICC events, including the 2023 ODI World Cup, and have also lost many bilateral series across formats in the past one year.

Currently, Pakistan are gearing up for the home Test series versus England, starting Oct 7. They suffered a whitewash in a two-match Test series at home versus Bangladesh last month.
