<p>As per the website, in about 10 per cent of FeCV-infected cats, the virus can mutate, infecting white blood cells and spreading throughout the cat's body. This triggers an intense inflammatory reaction, often in the abdomen, kidney, or brain, leading to the development of FIP.</p>

<p>Once a cat develops clinical FIP, the disease is usually progressive and almost always fatal.</p>

The other option is GS-441524, an antiviral tablet similar to the COVID-19 treatment remdesivir, which is approved for animal use in Britain but not readily available in Cyprus due to its high cost of 3,000 to 7,000 euros (about $3,300-$7,700) per cat.</p>

<p>Talking to AFP, Demetris Epaminondas, vice president of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association said that efforts are underway to obtain government authorisation for molnupiravir, which would cost a more affordable 200 euros per cat.</p>

<p>The Cyprus agriculture ministry said that is exploring various therapeutic preparations available on the European market to address the issue.</p>

<p>However, in the meantime, some desperate pet owners have reportedly resorted to purchasing medicines on the black market, risking legal consequences to save their beloved animals.</p>

<p>Speaking to AFP on the condition on anonymity, one Cypriot said: "We bought our medicines on the black market online, or from Facebook groups. But we keep our suppliers secret so that we can continue to treat our animals."</p>

'Primitive but effective': Washington turns to dogs and cats to help deal with rising rat problem

<p>A&nbsp;children's cat-hunting competition in New Zealand has been called off, following&nbsp;condemnation of the event.&nbsp;An annual hunt's organisers came under fire after adding a new category for kids to hunt feral cats, an chronic issue in New Zealand.&nbsp;Children were warned against killing pets, but they were encouraged&nbsp;to kill as many feral&nbsp;cats as they could in order to win a prize money totalling $155.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Animal protection organisations immediately criticised the event.&nbsp;The New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals expressed relief on Tuesday that the "children's category which involved shooting feral cats" will not take place, as reported by the BBC.</p>

<p>A representative argued that children, along with adults, would not be able to differentiate between "a feral, stray or frightened domesticated cat", according to AFP.</p>

<p>A study has found that cats can not only recognise their master's voice but also can differentiate between speech directed at them and speech directed at other human beings in the household.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So when you call your little munchkin of a fur-ball with a cute tum-tum (in that tone), the cat is actually listening.</p>

<p>The study has been published in the journal Animal Cognition.</p>

<p>In the study,&nbsp;behaviour of 16 cats was studied in experimental conditions. A number of voice recordings were played. Each set of recordings had three parts.</p>

<p>The first part was voice of the owner in a sweet, high-pitched tone. It was found that cats had keen reactions to this. They meowed back, stopped what they were doing and looked at the source of the voice and so on.</p>

<p>The second part was the owner repeating the same words but in a tone he/ she would use when talking normally to another human being. It was found that the cats had less pronounced reaction to this, just as if they knew the owner was not talking to them.</p>

<p>The third part was voice of a stranger repeating the same words. Cats did not have any reaction to this and appeared to ignore it.</p>

<p>This was first experiment to test how cats respond to cat-directed speech and human-directed speech.</p>

<p>So next time you want your cat to pay attention, be nice and call your twiddly-dum in a voice that goes with the 'shweet' words.</p>

<p>Working with a group of veterinarians, the clothing company has added wearable fans to the clothes of pets. Attached to a mesh outfit is a wearable fan that weighs 80 grammes and is operated by a battery.</p>

<p>Reportedly, the device blows air, all around the animal's body and comes in five different sizes. The reception has been fairly decent as well. Since its debut in July, the company has already received more than 100 orders. A single piece costs as much as $74.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Our existence on this planet is inextricably linked to the millions of species that also call it home. Of them, there are many that made their way into our hearts as pets. Our bonding with pets doesn't need an introduction. From celebrities flaunting their pets to people buying pet-specific accessories, from visiting pet cafes to having pet crematoriums, from crying when a dog dies in a movie to watching cat videos on loop, we undeniably are in love. Animal lovers understand that having a pet is not only a responsibility but a privilege. In a world like this, it is a privilege to have a heart that cares for a voiceless creature. If you have one such, you mustn't wait to read these books about humans' glorious bond with their companion animals. While the ones that are made into movies are already celebrated, I tried to mention those which I felt are underrated.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore:</strong><br />
Felix is Huddersfield Station's Senior Pest Controller and Chief Happiness Officer. As the station was yearning for a cat, an employee rescued a pregnant cat which eventually birthed Felix. First mistaken to be a male, Felix won the hearts of all the employees of the station, including those who didn't have an affinity to cats. Workplaces of Tata, Amazon, and Google have made headlines for bringing dogs to the office because, why not?</p>

<p dir="ltr">The book describes Felix's growth, her skills, naughtiness, tricks, achievements, and most importantly, her relationship with the staff and commuters of the station. It is when a regular commuter creates a Facebook page that Felix rose to fame.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The author writes about Felix with immense empathy and vivid descriptions, as though she is writing about one of us. The second reason I love this book is the way it is narrated, with the right amount of wit, emotion, and seriousness. The first reason is apparently the cover.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Wild and Wilful by Neha Sinha</strong><br />
This is undoubtedly my favourite Indian book about animals so far. Neha Sinha, a wildlife conservationist talks about select rare Indian species of animals in detail, her work with them, and the bias she faced as a woman close to wildlife. Neha and her fellow women are met with judging looks when they work with wild animals, more so in villages.</p>

<p dir="ltr">While giving the scientific information, Neha also adds a humane angle to the whole human-animal conflict. She talks about animals with empathy and kindness. The book covers various aspects ranging from laws and policies on paper to the ground reality that tribal and rural people have to face. It constantly reiterates that wild animals are living things that have feelings. Neha also talks to fellow conservationists and researchers to bring out the facts and curb the myths about so-called cruel animals.<br />
We need more people to read, write and be like her to save animals because it is already too late.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa</strong><br />
It is only a coincidence that I read this book during a long travel.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Found under Satoru's car, Nana didn't take much time to get into his house. Having lost his fond cat Hachi as a kid Satoru dotes over Nana. However, circumstances compel Satoru to give Nana up for adoption. Thus begins their long journey from one city to another, from van to train, requesting quite a few of his friends to adopt Nana. At each stage, we meet Satoru's friends and the various instances that shaped his life. None of the adoptions worked. During the journey, Nana experiences new places, new friends and of course, some troubles. He is smart enough to know what is going on and stubborn enough to not leave Satoru's side ever. What persuades Satoru to give up the apple of his eye and how their journey culminates is for you to read.</p>

<p dir="ltr">As we see shelters overflowing with recklessly abandoned pets, it is heartwarming to read about someone take this commitment. This story depicts how our pets are going to be with us and they should be, no matter what. Reading Nana's point of view felt like communicating with animals, which we normally can't do. That is what makes the story extremely personal. Through Nana, the author presents the thoughts of our pets - about us, about other animals, about life and the world in general. They think much more than they show. They understand what we don't tell.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Nana talks to us, questions us, makes us laugh, cry, wonder and think. If it had such profound impact on me, a dog person who never had a cat, I can only imagine how touching it will leave cat owners.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>A dog's life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann. M Martin</strong><br />
For someone who fosters the dogs of her street, this book is a gift. In my opinion, it is the best description of the life of a stray.<br />
The story, as the name suggests, is the autobiography of a puppy born as a nobody. The author takes us through the stormy life that leads her way home. However, there are bleak chances of strays finding loving homes, in real life.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Our protagonist is named Squirrel. Squirrel and Bone are born in an abandoned toolshed. Before they could learn the essential survival skills, they lost their mother. Squirrel is later seperated from Bone too. Thereon, she fights everyday for her survival.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. Every dog we see on the road is as helpless and disadvantaged as Squirrel. In multiple incidents, the author shows how humans let down the man's best friend. It is a must-read for people working with dog shelters or in an individual capacity.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Laika's Window by Kurt Caswell</strong><br />
Once an anonymous mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika is now immortalised. To say that she sacrificed her life would be an understatement. It is a joy that sending animals to space is banned now. What happened to Laika is unfair, to say the least.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The author, through poetic and empathetic descriptions, writes what Laika might have gone through during the grueling process. Did she know that she was being sent on a one-way mission? Did she understand why she was being subjected to unbearable torture? When she looked out of the window of her spacecraft, what did she see?</p>

<p dir="ltr">This book depicts how an innocent little girl lost in the space war between two countries and suffered in the name of science. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I appreciate that the author concerned enough about Laika to present the whole event from her point of view. Reading this is sure to leave one in thought, for we have known Laika merely as a dog that died in space; never as a living thing that suffered till the very end.</p>

If you have one such, you mustn't wait to read these books about humans' glorious bond with their companion animals. While the ones that are made into movies are already celebrated, I tried to mention those which I felt are underrated. Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore: Felix is Huddersfield Station's Senior Pest Controller and Chief Happiness Officer. As the station was yearning for a cat, an employee rescued a pregnant cat which eventually birthed Felix. First mistaken to be a male, Felix won the hearts of all the employees of the station, including those who didn't have an affinity to cats. Workplaces of Tata, Amazon, and Google have made headlines for bringing dogs to the office because, why not? The book describes Felix's growth, her skills, naughtiness, tricks, achievements, and most importantly, her relationship with the staff and commuters of the station. It is when a regular commuter creates a Facebook page that Felix rose to fame. The author writes about Felix with immense empathy and vivid descriptions, as though she is writing about one of us. The second reason I love this book is the way it is narrated, with the right amount of wit, emotion, and seriousness. The first reason is apparently the cover. Wild and Wilful by Neha Sinha This is undoubtedly my favourite Indian book about animals so far. Neha Sinha, a wildlife conservationist talks about select rare Indian species of animals in detail, her work with them, and the bias she faced as a woman close to wildlife. Neha and her fellow women are met with judging looks when they work with wild animals, more so in villages. While giving the scientific information, Neha also adds a humane angle to the whole human-animal conflict. She talks about animals with empathy and kindness. The book covers various aspects ranging from laws and policies on paper to the ground reality that tribal and rural people have to face. It constantly reiterates that wild animals are living things that have feelings. Neha also talks to fellow conservationists and researchers to bring out the facts and curb the myths about so-called cruel animals. We need more people to read, write and be like her to save animals because it is already too late. The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa It is only a coincidence that I read this book during a long travel. Found under Satoru's car, Nana didn't take much time to get into his house. Having lost his fond cat Hachi as a kid Satoru dotes over Nana. However, circumstances compel Satoru to give Nana up for adoption. Thus begins their long journey from one city to another, from van to train, requesting quite a few of his friends to adopt Nana. At each stage, we meet Satoru's friends and the various instances that shaped his life. None of the adoptions worked. During the journey, Nana experiences new places, new friends and of course, some troubles. He is smart enough to know what is going on and stubborn enough to not leave Satoru's side ever. What persuades Satoru to give up the apple of his eye and how their journey culminates is for you to read. As we see shelters overflowing with recklessly abandoned pets, it is heartwarming to read about someone take this commitment. This story depicts how our pets are going to be with us and they should be, no matter what. Reading Nana's point of view felt like communicating with animals, which we normally can't do. That is what makes the story extremely personal. Through Nana, the author presents the thoughts of our pets - about us, about other animals, about life and the world in general. They think much more than they show. They understand what we don't tell. Nana talks to us, questions us, makes us laugh, cry, wonder and think. If it had such profound impact on me, a dog person who never had a cat, I can only imagine how touching it will leave cat owners. A dog's life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann. M Martin For someone who fosters the dogs of her street, this book is a gift. In my opinion, it is the best description of the life of a stray. The story, as the name suggests, is the autobiography of a puppy born as a nobody. The author takes us through the stormy life that leads her way home. However, there are bleak chances of strays finding loving homes, in real life. Our protagonist is named Squirrel. Squirrel and Bone are born in an abandoned toolshed. Before they could learn the essential survival skills, they lost their mother. Squirrel is later seperated from Bone too. Thereon, she fights everyday for her survival. Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. Every dog we see on the road is as helpless and disadvantaged as Squirrel. In multiple incidents, the author shows how humans let down the man's best friend. It is a must-read for people working with dog shelters or in an individual capacity. Laika's Window by Kurt Caswell Once an anonymous mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika is now immortalised. To say that she sacrificed her life would be an understatement. It is a joy that sending animals to space is banned now. What happened to Laika is unfair, to say the least. The author, through poetic and empathetic descriptions, writes what Laika might have gone through during the grueling process. Did she know that she was being sent on a one-way mission? Did she understand why she was being subjected to unbearable torture? When she looked out of the window of her spacecraft, what did she see? This book depicts how an innocent little girl lost in the space war between two countries and suffered in the name of science. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I appreciate that the author concerned enough about Laika to present the whole event from her point of view. Reading this is sure to leave one in thought, for we have known Laika merely as a dog that died in space; never as a living thing that suffered till the very end. <p>The recording would either play the cat's actual name (congruent condition) or some other cat's name (incongruent condition)</p>

<p>It was seen that cat responded differently in these both cases. It was also seen that incongruent conditions (when name of the cat didn't match that played in the recording) resulted in cats (looking at photo) stare for a longer time, as if puzzled due to mismatched information.<br />

<p>Not everybody was okay with this horrendous act and soon a member of local animal welfare group rushed to the spot to investigate the matter. According to reports, the owner of the restaurant assured the cats were looked after by him and are fine.</p>

<p>It was the viral video that helped the police in identifying and arresting the abuser. If charged, he is likely to face up to 10 years of imprisonment. Reports also suggest that there could be a fine of £42,000.</p>

<p>It’s Greece’s Citizens Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos who took to his social media to announce the arrest of the man. In his post the minister wrote, “The Greek Police arrested a person who kicked and threw a kitten into the sea. Violence against animals is unacceptable.”</p>

<p>He further added, “The government has passed a strict law to protect animals from abuse which is now in place, but in any case it is a matter of humanity and culture. I am deeply saddened by those who mistreat animals and those who tolerate it. I heartily congratulate those who raised the issue. The reason now belongs to Greek justice.”</p>

<p>During the pandemic, these lab-grown proteins had garnered headlines for preventing severe illness in high-risk people with Covid.</p>

<p>Wear and tear of the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones leads to osteoarthritis. When the bones in a joint rub against each other, they cause pain and lessen movement, and occasionally cause bone spurs.</p>

<p>60 per cent of cats aged six and older and 90 per cent of cats older than 12 years are thought to suffer from this condition.</p>

<p>"Advancements in modern veterinary medicine have been instrumental in extending the lives of many animals, including cats," said Steven Solomon, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, in a statement.</p>

<p>"But with longer lives come chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritis," he added.</p>

<p>Due to the fact that cats cannot directly express their symptoms, researchers asked their owners about their animals' ability to jump onto furniture, use their litter box, or groom themselves, and compared their abilities with before they developed osteoarthritis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The owners were then asked to assess their cats' responses after receiving treatment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's a cat — and the location isn't a remote rainforest, but the capital of the United States.</p>

<p>The photo is part of the DC Cat Count, a first of its kind, three-year effort by animal welfare advocates, conservationists and scientists to enumerate every Felis catus in Washington.</p>

<p>The team behind the study says it provides an accurate estimate of the size of the city's indoor, outdoor and shelter population.</p>

<p>It found there are about 200,000 cats in the District of Columbia, with about half of them living indoors only, said Tyler Flockhart, a conservation biologist and science lead on the DC Cat Count.</p>

<p>The other half is a group that includes owned cats with limited or unlimited access outdoors, stray cats, and roughly 3,000 to 4,000 feral cats who avoid interactions with humans, Flockhart said.</p>

<p>"I don't think that you can find another wild mammal — another wild carnivore — that occurs at that density anywhere in the world," he said, of cats and urban environments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think that this is really sort of an interesting idea that we can have so many cats in such a small location."</p>

<p><strong>Consensus for a cat census&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>The study brought together groups that are often at odds over the impact that outdoor cats have on wildlife and landscape.</p>

<p>While conservationists worry that outdoor cats can decimate bird populations, animal advocates seek to ensure the welfare and safety of cats seeking to survive outside.</p>

<p>"What was really groundbreaking with the DC Cat Count was these organizations coming together," said Stephanie Shain, the chief operating officer of the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA), which took part in the study.</p>

<p>They were driven by a common purpose "to really focus not on who is right or who has been right, but really focus on getting it right — &nbsp;finding out the information, analyzing the data," she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shain said HRA recommends that cat owners keep their feline friends indoors only in order to keep them safe and avoid damaging wildlife.</p>

<p>"I was pleased to see how many people actually follow that advice," she said.</p>

<p>To count all the cats who call the seat of American power home, researchers surveyed more than 2,600 residents, analyzed animal shelter records, walked along specific routes in search of cats and set up wildlife cameras in more than 1,500 spots.</p>

<p>"This is probably the most thorough analysis of cats of any city in the world," Flockhart said.</p>

<p>He and other researchers continue to analyse the data collected since 2018 and the research has already led to several peer-reviewed scientific papers.</p>

<p>The DC Cat Count team also made an extensive toolkit available online with protocols and guidelines for organisations wishing to carry out their own cat census. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides cats, the camera traps also snapped pictures of numerous animals including squirrels, raccoons, foxes, deer — and even a bobcat.</p>

<p>"There's a huge diversity of wildlife in our cities," Flockhart said.</p>

<p>"We tend to think of it as humans-only, and it could be anything but the case. There are all types of wildlife, from rodents all the way up to large predators."</p>
