Rafael Nadal, Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz to play in charity match to raise funds for crisis-hit Ukraine

2022 was an action-packed season for tennis lovers. It started with Novak Djokovic's Covid vaccination row at the Australian Open before Rafael Nadal won the French Open. The likes of Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek also tasted success in women's singles. While the year saw the rise of Carlos Alcaraz -- winning the US Open -- it was also a witness to the retirement of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, etc. After lots that took place in 2022, a new tennis season has already kicked off and the games are coming thick and fast in 2023; with the Tata Open (in Pune) and the Australian Open which will commence on January 16.

Talking about the Tata Open, the reigning US Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are currently plying their trade at the event, being held in Pune. The pair have been a force to reckon with in recent years and will like to remain consistent and go a step ahead in 2023. After a Round of 16 victory in the Tata Open, where Rajeev-Joe went past Sebastian Baez-Luis David Martinez 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), Rajeev had an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo. The American player spoke at length on the emergence of young talents, the retirement of stalwarts and on Novak Djokovic ahead of the Australian Open. Excerpts:

Rajeev a very happy new year to you and considering your Indian roots this must be a memorable experience returning to India to play and that too as the top seed.

Happy New Year to you as well. I've been in India for quite some time, since 2016. Covid had a major role to play in it. Happy to be in Pune. Never been here so it is good.

Tennis saw three high-profile retirements in 2022 with Roger Federer, Serena Williams and before them Ashleigh Barty. with Rafael Nadal one is not sure how much more punishment that battered body can take...Nadal and Djokovic did win three of the four slams last year but has the baton been officially passed?

I don't think it is really past yet. I honestly believe if Novak was playing in Australia, Wimbledon had points and if he was allowed to play US Open, he would have been the No. 1 ranked player to date. He showed his class again in the ATP Tour finals. He played so little last year but still was able to keep such a high ranking. It is getting there (for the young guns) but I don't think Djokovic is ready to give up just yet.

Obviously, when we factor in the 2022 season we have to remember that Djokovic didn't play as much as he would have liked. Let's leave his vaccination beliefs aside and focus only on the phenomenal player that he is. You saw him at the tour finals and do you get the feeling that he is going to carry a lot of hurt into the Australian Open and is the player to beat?

He's the player to beat. I'm guessing he has won 8-9 times there. He is so difficult on that surface and everybody will agree that he is the guy to beat there for sure, even if his ranking is not No 1.

A lot of players will also head into the Aus open thinking hang on, we were the next gen but it's Alcaraz who has seized the initiative...the likes of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev face a defining season don't you think?

I think you have seen this generation of Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic have eaten up a few generations. I don't think Medvedev, Tsitsipas and the likes are done by any stretch but I think they know they have such young talents on their heels and that will make for a super competitive 4-5 years when Djokovic and Nadal did. Don't think it will be like the last few years where only a few guys have dominated. I think it will be very competitive and refreshing in that sense.

Before I close this, what will be a good season for you personally, something you would be happy with coming December this year?

Winning slams always make a great year. We have managed to do that for the last 2-3 years in a row so hopefully, that's a start. Becoming the No. 1 team in the world is something we haven't achieved. We have been No. 2 for quite some time. Those two things are at the top of the list. Everything else will follow through.

Exclusive: Even if Novak Djokovic is not No 1, he's the guy to beat, says Rajeev Ram ahead of Aus Open

World number one Carlos Alcaraz said he is lucky to have Novak Djokovic as a rival on the ATP Tour as it gives him the chance to test himself against one of the sport's greatest players. Djokovic was deported from Australia in the lead-up to the season's first Grand Slam in January for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 and missed several tournaments including the U.S. Open, where Spaniard Alcaraz claimed his maiden major.

With Djokovic granted a visa to travel Down Under next year -- where he will target a 10th Australian Open title -- Alcaraz said he was looking forward to a potential meeting with the 21-times Grand Slam champion.

"Tennis is better having the best players in the world, and for the fans as well it's good to see a tournament with the best players," Alcaraz told reporters at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi. "I want to see Novak play in every tournament. I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best player in the world. I'm a lucky guy to have him on the tour."

Alcaraz enjoyed a superb 2022 which he finished as the year-end number one and said he was nearing full fitness ahead of the new season, having missed the ATP Finals and Davis Cup due to an abdominal injury sustained at the Paris Masters.

"I feel good finally. I had a month to recover... and right now I feel almost 100%. I have been training normally this past week and I'm feeling great," Alcaraz said. "Of course having a target on my back from everyone is going to be a little bit different for me this year and I have to be prepared for that.

"I'm going to try to finish 2023 in the same position as now. It's going to be a long year but I'm going to enjoy it."

'I am lucky to have Novak Djokovic as a rival on the ATP Tour', says world number one Carlos Alcaraz

Rafa Nadal was eliminated from the ATP Finals as Casper Ruud beat American Taylor Fritz in their round-robin match in Turin on Tuesday, which also guaranteed that teenager Carlos Alcaraz would end the year as world number one.

Spaniard Nadal needed to win the tournament to take the rankings top spot from compatriot Alcaraz, but straight-set losses to Fritz on Sunday and Felix Auger-Aliassime earlier on Tuesday left him needing Ruud to lose in straight sets to keep his hopes alive.

The Norwegian, however, won the first set 6-3 against Fritz, capitalising on his much improved serve.

Fritz responded to take the second and it was anyone's match in the third-set tiebreak when Ruud let a 5-1 lead slip away and an energized Fritz levelled at 6-6 in their first career meeting.

But Ruud kept his composure and sealed the 6-3 4-6 7-6(6) win on his third match point to reach the semi-finals of the tournament for the second consecutive year.

"It was a close one," Ruud said.

"I guess we were both nervous there at the end but luckily I was able to pull through."

The 19-year-old Alcaraz, who is not competing at the tournament due to an abdominal injury, will be confirmed as the youngest year-end number one since the ATP rankings began in 1973.

With his 6-3 6-4 loss to Canada's Auger-Aliassime, the record 22-times Grand Slam champion Nadal has now lost four successive ATP Tour matches for the first time since 2009.

Auger-Aliassime, now coached by Nadal's uncle and long-time mentor Toni who sat in his box, will face Fritz in his final group match with a chance of making the last four.

"I had one match to get used to the conditions and I felt my game was better today, I was hitting it with precision and consistency," Auger-Aliassime said.

It was a disappointing display by Nadal who looked rusty having played only one tournament since the U.S. Open.

"There are a couple of positive things. I was able to play two tournaments in the past three weeks. That's a positive, something that I was not able to do for a while," Nadal said.

"I don't think I forgot how to play tennis, how to be strong enough mentally. I just need to recover all these positive feelings and all this confidence and all this strong mentality that I need to be at the level that I want to be.

"I don't know if I going to reach that level again. But what I don't have any doubt is that I (am) going to die for it."

Nadal held the upper hand at times in the first set and twice threatened to break the serve of his opponent, who was beaten by Ruud on his tournament debut on Sunday.

Serving at 3-4 Nadal led 40-0 but a couple of double faults and baseline errors allowed Auger-Aliassime to break.

Auger-Aliassime, who has won four titles this season, sealed the first set with a solid hold and moved a break ahead early in the second when Nadal stumbled trying to serve and volley.

Nadal showed the odd flash of brilliance but could make no impression as he slumped to a defeat.

Auger-Aliassime and Fritz, who have both won one of their opening two matches and are playing in the tournament for the first time, will face off on Thursday with the winner advancing to the semis.

Although eliminated, Nadal will still play Ruud in the night match on Thursday.

Rafael Nadal eliminated from ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz to finish year at no. 1

World number one Carlos Alcaraz swatted aside Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets on Thursday, as Novak Djokovic continued his Paris Masters title defence by also reaching the quarter-finals.

Spanish teenager Alcaraz, hoping to win a third Masters title of the year after previous successes in Miami and Madrid, saw off former world number three Dimitrov 6-1, 6-3 in 72 minutes.

Alcaraz will be confirmed as the year-end world number one before the ATP Finals in Turin later this month if he lifts the trophy this weekend in the French capital.

"It was not his day, he didn't play at his best, but I played my game," said the 19-year-old US Open champion.

Alcaraz will take on Holger Rune for a last-four place after the Dane knocked out seventh seed Andrey Rublev with a 6-4, 7-5 win.

The top seed got off to a rapid start at Bercy Arena, taking nine of the first 10 games to seize total control of the match.

Dimitrov managed to break back in the second set, but Alcaraz broke again in the eighth game and comfortably wrapped up victory.

He hit 16 winners and made only six unforced errors in a dominant display, while Dimitrov saw 24 unforced errors fly off his racquet.

Djokovic, seeking a record-extending seventh Bercy title this week, thrashed Russian Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-1.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion, already the winner of a record 38 Masters crowns, will play Lorenzo Musetti for a semi-final berth.

Djokovic stretched his winning run in individual tournaments to 18 matches, dating back to his French Open quarter-final loss to Rafael Nadal in May.

The Wimbledon champion has now won 10 of his 11 meetings with Khachanov -- the only defeat coming in the 2018 Paris Masters final.

He edged a tight opening set but powered to victory in the second, reeling off five straight games.

Musetti knocks out Ruud

Italian youngster Musetti downed third seed Casper Ruud in three sets to reach his maiden Masters quarter-final.

The 20-year-old, at a career-high ranking of 23rd, came from behind to beat the Norwegian Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Musetti will next face either reigning champion Novak Djokovic or Russian Karen Khachanov.

"He was playing really well and I had to play my best tennis to beat him," said Musetti.

"I am really happy that all the hard work I am doing keeps improving me. I am really proud of this win."

Ruud has struggled since losing the US Open final to Alcaraz -- having also been the French Open runner-up earlier this year -- winning just two of his last six matches.

The 23-year-old took the opening set with a single break in the 10th game but then had no answer as his opponent battled back.

Musetti, who has lifted two ATP titles this year, broke serve three times across the next two sets to continue his rise with his best performance to date at a Masters event.

Felix Auger-Aliassime extended his winning streak to 15 matches as the Canadian ended Gilles Simon's career with a 6-1, 6-3 success.

The eighth seed is still on track for a fourth successive title and will next play Frances Tiafoe after the American's 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) win over Alex de Minaur.

Auger-Aliassime and Rublev both qualified for the ATP Finals on Wednesday to complete the eight-man field.

Former world number six Simon had said he would retire after the tournament and the 37-year-old Frenchman bowed out of the sport after surprise wins over Andy Murray and Taylor Fritz earlier this week.

Alcaraz, Djokovic cruise into Paris quarters

World number one Carlos Alcaraz retired from his Paris Masters quarter-final against Holger Rune on Friday with an abdominal injury, while Felix Auger-Aliassime stretched his winning run to 16 matches.

Alcaraz, the reigning US Open champion, lost the first set and was trailing 3-1 in a second set tie-break when he decided to stop, having received treatment to his left side at the previous changeover.

"It's something wrong on the abdominal," said Alcaraz. "At the end of the set, it was wrong. It was getting wrong and I preferred to retire and take care about it."

The Spanish teenager had been attempting to win a third Masters title of the year after victories in Miami and Madrid.

Alcaraz would have been confirmed as the year-end world number one before the ATP Finals in Turin later this month had he lifted the trophy this weekend in the French capital.

Instead, his participation at the November 13-20 event is now in doubt. Alcaraz had arrived in Paris struggling with a knee injury, an issue he downplayed earlier in the week.

"Right now I have some test on how it's gonna be before Turin, but right now I'm focused to try to get better in the abdominal and trying to be at 100 per cent in Turin," said Alcaraz.

"I cannot stretch. I couldn't serve well. I couldn't hit the forehand well. When I turn the body, I feel it. I feel the abdomen in so many movements."

"It's in a zone that I have problems, I have problems before," he added. "Let's see if it's the same problem as I felt before or not."

Rune will advance to face Auger-Aliassime for a place in Sunday's final. The 19-year-old Dane was beaten by Auger-Aliassime in the final in Basel last weekend.

Auger-Aliassime continued his quest for a fourth title in as many weeks by defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4 to power into the semi-finals earlier in the day.

The 22-year-old Canadian also won in Antwerp and Basel last month. He is trying to achieve a feat no man has accomplished since Ivan Lendl won five tournaments in five weeks in 1981.

Having raced through the opening set against the 21st-ranked Tiafoe, Auger-Aliassime needed six match points to finally see off the American and reach his second Masters semi-final.

The eighth-seeded Auger-Aliassime has enjoyed a breakout season. His 56 wins are third most on the ATP Tour this year, while only Alcaraz has bettered his four singles titles.

"I have felt great not only this week but in the last few weeks," said Auger-Aliassime.

"Sixteen wins in a row is special. I have an opportunity to win again tomorrow. I'll try to seize it, but definitely it's been an amazing period."

Ninth seed Taylor Fritz kept his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals alive when he was among four Americans to record straight sets victories at the Paris Masters on Monday to move into the second round. Fritz, the highest-seeded American in the draw beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5 6-2 on the back of a decent first serve despite trailing by a break in the opening set.

Fritz hit only 11 winners to the Spaniard's 20 but he converted five break points to wrap up the match in 90 minutes to beat Davidovich Fokina for the first time in three meetings. "Really happy, he's a tough person to play against. He's got weapons on both sides, he's extremely quick as well, so there's nowhere you can really play with a lot of safety," Fritz said. "He makes a lot of crazy shots and he's beaten me the past two times."

Fritz needs to reach the final to have any chance of sealing a place in the ATP Finals in Turin ahead of Andrey Rublev or Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has won his last three tournaments. "Turin is still in the picture, obviously, but there's not much else I really could have done. I won Tokyo," he added.

"Felix has played really, really well, so he deserves it, but I am going to try to steal his spot this week for sure." Fellow American John Isner can remove one hurdle in the form of Rublev after he booked a place in the second round against the Russian with a 6-4 7-6(3) win over Germany's Oscar Otte. The towering 37-year-old Isner, who finished runner-up to Andy Murray in 2016, fired 19 aces in the contest to wrap things up in 82 minutes.

French wildcard Gilles Simon battled back from a set down to beat Britain's Andy Murray 4-6 7-5 6-3. Frances Tiafoe also moved into the second round without conceding a break point with a 6-4 6-4 win over Lorenzo Sonego while fellow American Maxime Cressy ousted Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-3.

In a mixed day for the Italians, Lorenzo Musetti beat Marin Cilic in straight sets to advance but 11th seed Jannik Sinner was knocked out by Swiss qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler who is ranked 49 places below him. Defending champion Novak Djokovic, world number one Carlos Alcaraz, Rafa Nadal and Daniil Medvedev are among the main seeds who received a bye into the second round.

Carlos Alcaraz sends Roger Federer a heartfelt message, admits he still wants to play against his 'idol'

Carlos Alcaraz recently proved his mettle by laying claim to the US Open title by overcoming the challenge presented by Casper Ruud in his first major final at the Flushing Meadows.

However, it seems like he has joined some of the greatest players of our time in making his way to the golf greens, switching out his racquet with a golf club to work on his swing during his downtime. A short clip from his session on the greens was shared by the official Twitter handle of the PGA Tour.

Most notably, it is his compatriot Rafael Nadal, who tends to participate in some casual golf. While the extent of Alcaraz's abilities with a golf club is still revealing itself, keeping his swing in mind, it seems like he will catch up with Nadal sooner rather than later.

Alcaraz is hot on the heels of the greatest achievement of his career. Having stormed into the final stage of the US Open, the teenage sensation laid claim to the coveted title by outclassing Ruud with the scoreboards reading 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.

"It is something I have tried to achieve. All the hard work I have done. I am just 19 years old so the top decisions are with my team and my parents. It is really special for me,” said Alcaraz in the aftermath of the action.

Rafael Nadal shares heartfelt tweet for US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, lauds academy product Casper Ruud

It was a night to remember for 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz as he defeated Casper Ruud in the final to claim his maiden US Open title on Sunday. The youngster from Spain maintained his calm at his first ever Grand Slam final and as a result of the victory, became the youngest World No 1 in history.

It has been a mercurial rise to fame for Alvarez who has proven his mettle – both through skill and determination. With a total of 23 hours and 40 minutes on court, he broke the conventional stigma surrounding younger players and their inability to finish the match when taken to five sets.

Since the age of 17, Alcaraz was considered a special talent by a number of people in Spain, and he even earned top praise from Tony Nadal. He went on to compare Alcaraz to Rafael Nadal when it comes to the path of their careers and also the intensity both players show on the court.

"Carlos' intensity and speed is something you rarely see. His game follows the same path as Rafa; he never gives up until the last ball and has that characteristic intensity," Toni Nadal told AFP.

However, the journey was not without its fair share of ups and downs. Alcaraz started his training at the at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia where his father was the tennis academy director and later, joined Juan Carlos Ferrero's Equelite JC Ferrero Sport Academy at the age of 16.

The new training regime worked wonders for the youngster as he became the youngest participant in the 2018 Australian Open and even made it to the second round. The connection with Nadal also continued in an odd way as he broke the veteran’s record for being the youngest match winner at the Madrid Open that year. In 2021, he also became the youngest to break into the ATP top 100.

The magical run continued as he defeated world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a fifth-set tiebreak at last year’s US Open. He even became one of the youngest players to reach the quarterfinal stage of the competition, but a leg injury ended his campaign with a loss against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The injury, however, was not able to keep him out for long as he continued to make significant gains as he defeated Tsitsipas once again at the Barcelona Open and went on to claim his first Masters 1000 title by defeating Casper Ruud. The victory earned him a lot of praise – even from Rafael Nadal.

Finally, a day after his 19th birthday, he registered a famous win over Nadal at the Madrid Open as he became the first teenager to beat him on clay. In the very next match, he went up against Novak Djokovic and although there were some hiccups, he prevailed with a sensational victory.

The first three Grand Slams saw Alcaraz make the third or fourth rounds but failing to capitalise on the gains. However, it all changed at the US Open. With no Djokovic and Nadal struggling with his fitness, the field was wide open and Alcaraz seemed like the dark horse with his gritty gameplay.

With wins over Sebastian Baez, Federico Coria and Jenson Brooksby, he cruised into the fourth round. The next two matches against Marin Cilic and Janik Sinner both went to the fifth set, but there was no stopping the young sensation. While most experts felt that he may burn out due to the marathon matches, Alcaraz proved his talent once again as he dominated proceedings against Ruud.

Despite losing a set, he hardly looked uncomfortable against his Norwegian opponent and with the No 1 crown already on his head, it will be interesting to see the heights that await him in the future.

Carlos Alcaraz: The newly crowned world No 1 who took US Open by storm

When Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer eventually loosen their stranglehold on the Grand Slams, pundits may view Carlos Alcaraz's U.S. Open victory on Sunday as heralding the changing of the guard in men's tennis.

Having earned his reputation as one of the fiercest competitors among a hungry group of young challengers to the 'Big Three', Alcaraz's win over Casper Ruud not only brought the 19-year-old Spaniard a first major title but also saw him become the youngest world number one in ATP history.

His two-week journey in New York saw him collide with a host of other rising stars, offering the promise of exciting rivalries for fans to enjoy for many years to come.

He battled 21-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner in a thrilling five-set quarter-final that did not finish until nearly 3 a.m. before surviving another five-setter against 24-year-old American Frances Tiafoe, who became the first Black American man to make the semis of the tournament since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

On Sunday "Carlitos" avoided another punishing five-set match but still had to be at his athletic best to score a 6-4 2-6 7-6(1) 6-3 victory over 23-year-old Norwegian Ruud, who rises to number two in the world behind Alcaraz.

The Spaniard's coach, former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero, said there is no shortage of talent on the men's Tour but he came away from Alcaraz's quarter-final match against Sinner thinking the pair could dominate for the next decade.

"The other day I said that maybe Sinner and Carlos could dominate the Tour for maybe the next 10 years, from what I saw, the level that I saw the other day," he said.

"Of course, there's another players like (Alexander) Zverev, (Dominic) Thiem, Casper, (Stefanos) Tsitsipas, they going to be there, they going to have opportunities to win Grand Slams for sure."

Also making headlines at Flushing Meadows was fiery 27-year-old Australian Nick Kyrgios, who had reached the Wimbledon final and knocked then world number one Daniil Medvedev out in the fourth round in New York.

But while the rising stars command more and more of the spotlight and help attract a younger and more diverse fan base to the sport, it would be premature to say the landscape has shifted.

Nadal won the first two Grand Slams of the year at Melbourne Park and Roland Garros.

Three-time U.S. Open champion Djokovic, who was not able to travel to New York having chosen not to be vaccinated against COVID-19, won Wimbledon.

The 'Big Three' had won 20 of the last 23 majors coming into Sunday's final and finished top of the world rankings in 17 of the last 18 years.

And while the 41-year-old Federer's future in the sport remains uncertain, Nadal, 36, is 38-5 this year and Djokovic will be hungry to match or surpass the Spaniard's record 22 Grand Slam titles when the new season begins next year.

For ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe, however, the tide is starting to turn.

"It's remarkable to watch Alcaraz play this game, how he's elevated the tempo of this game along with Sinner and Tiafoe and other young guys," he said on Sunday.

"To me it really is the start, it's not the finish, but it's the start of the real changing of the guard in men's tennis."

Three-time U.S. Open champion Djokovic, who was not able to travel to New York having chosen not to be vaccinated against COVID-19, won Wimbledon. Also Read: Carlos Alcaraz defeats Casper Ruud to win US Open, ascends to world number one The 'Big Three' had won 20 of the last 23 majors coming into Sunday's final and finished top of the world rankings in 17 of the last 18 years.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Casper Ruud, US Open 2022 final: Head-to-head record and key stats

Carlos Alcaraz insists he is "not afraid" as he targets the US Open title and a slice of history as the youngest men's world number one on Sunday. The 19-year-old Spaniard tackles Casper Ruud in a winner-takes-all final with both men chasing a maiden Slam crown and the top ranking.

"I'm not afraid of the moment," said Alcaraz, the youngest finalist at a Slam since compatriot Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005.

In a tournament which saw Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer fail to make the start, and four-time winner Nadal falling at the last-16 hurdle, Alcaraz has flourished in his status as champion-in-waiting.

His mesmerising shot-making and flamboyance have seen him overcome three successive five-setters to make the final. He spent more than 13 hours on court in those three marathons.

Against Jannik Sinner, in a five-hour 15-minute quarter-final which ended at 2:50 a.m. on Thursday morning, he saved a match point. He then required four match points to finish off Frances Tiafoe in Friday's semi-final, which was the fourth longest match of the tournament.

It was Alcaraz's 50th win of 2022. Such performances have convinced Alcaraz that the stars have aligned for him to capture his first Slam title.

"I've prepared myself mentally and physically to be fighting for the big things on Sunday," said Alcaraz, the youngest finalist in New York since Pete Sampras in 1990.

"I always dreamed of being number one."

Alcaraz has a 2-0 winning record over Ruud, who will be playing in his second Slam final after finishing runner-up to Nadal at the French Open in June. One of those wins came on hard courts at the Miami final in March. It was one of Alcaraz's four titles in 2022.

In both previous meetings, Alcaraz has won in straight sets.

"I am just going for it and I'll enjoy the moment," said Alcaraz, whose coach Juan Carlos Ferrero ascended to the number one spot when he made the 2003 final in New York.

Ruud, meanwhile, won't be afraid of slugging it out for five sets on Sunday -- his four-hour 23-minute third-round win over Tommy Paul was the tournament's third longest.

The 23-year-old will become number one on Sunday if he becomes the first Norwegian man to win a Grand Slam title. However, with eight of his nine career titles coming on clay, Ruud has been dismissed as a one-surface specialist.

His three titles in 2022, in Buenos Aires, Geneva and Gstaad, were all on clay. Before this year, he had never got past the third round in New York in four visits but making the final in Miami helped convince him that he can be a force on faster courts.

"Reaching that final I think did something with my self-belief but also respect from other players," said Ruud, the current world number seven.

"Whenever they look at my results, they'll see, Okay, he made the final of an ATP 1000 on hard court.

"This guy knows to play more than clay. If you can have small percentages of fear or respect in your opponent's head, it will of course help."

Ruud's run to the final has been helped by seeing top seed and defending champion Daniil Medvedev fall in the last-16 and fifth-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas exit in the first round.

Both were in Ruud's half of the draw.

Ruud believes the key to victory on Sunday will be to push Alcaraz as far back as possible.

"If he steps in, he can do anything with the ball. He can rip a winner. He also has great touch with the dropshot," said Ruud.

"But if you play with good depth and good length, it's tougher to hit dropshots. That will be something that I will try to focus on."

Having won just six games in his French Open final mauling at the hands of Nadal, the Norwegian is happy to be facing a different Spaniard.

"I'm happy that it's not Rafa on clay," he said.

I can see No. 1 in the world, but it's so far away: Carlos Alcaraz raring to give his all in US Open final

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz ended Frances Tiafoe's dream run at the U.S. Open with a 6-7(6) 6-3 6-1 6-7(5) 6-3 win to reach his first major final, where he will face Casper Ruud with the world number one ranking on the line.

Despite playing into the early morning hours in his previous two five-set matches, the 19-year-old showed no signs of fatigue on Friday, racing around the court to win the hard-fought battle.

"We are in a semi-final at a Grand Slam and we have to give everything we have inside, we have to fight until the last ball," Alcaraz said in an on-court interview.

"It doesn't matter if we are fighting for five hours, six hours. You have to give everything on court. Frances gave everything on court. This is amazing."

If he can beat Ruud, Alcaraz would become the youngest man to be crowned world number one, breaking the mark set by Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who was 20 when he became the world's top ranked player in 2001.

The win ends Big Foe's run at the tournament, where his unlikely success and uniquely American life story captivated fans and brought out luminaries including former first lady Michelle Obama to Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night.

No American man has hoisted a Grand Slam trophy since Andy Roddick won the U.S. Open in 2003, and Tiafoe was the first Black American man to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows since the late Hall of Famer Ashe did so in 1972.

"This one really, really hurts," Tiafoe said in an on-court interview.

"Too good from Carlos. You're going to win a lot of Grand Slams, you're a hell of a player, a hell of a person. I'm happy I got to share the court on such a big stage with you.

"I am going to come back and I will win this thing one day. I'm sorry guys."

Tiafoe, whose parents fled civil war in Sierra Leone and who was exposed to the sport when his father worked as a caretaker at a tennis center in Maryland, had the sold-out crowd in his corner, especially after he saved a match point in the fourth set.

But there was still plenty of love for Alcaraz, who has electrified the tennis world with his acrobatic shotmaking and youthful vigor.

Alcaraz got off to a sluggish start, double faulting twice in the first set tie-breaker including one on set point to hand Tiafoe a 1-0 lead.

He raised his level to win the second set, breezed through the one-sided third and took Tiafoe to the brink in the fourth before the American produced an incredible fight back, winning his eighth tiebreaker of the tournament to set up a decider.

But there would be no escape from Alcaraz, who broke to open the fifth set and never looked back, sealing the win when Tiafoe's shot hit the net on match point.

It was the 50th match win for Alcaraz, the most of any player on the ATP Tour this year.

Alcaraz, seeded third, will look to claim what could be the first of many Grand Slam trophies when he faces French Open finalist Ruud, who produced a confident four-set win over Karen Khachanov earlier on Friday.

Alcaraz beat Ruud in straight sets in the Miami Open final in April.

"It's amazing to be able to fight for big things. First time in a final of a Grand Slam. I can see the number one in the world and at the same time it is so far away," Alcaraz said.

Also Read: Casper Ruud reaches US Open final with confident win over Karen Khachanov No American man has hoisted a Grand Slam trophy since Andy Roddick won the U.S. I'm sorry guys." Tiafoe, whose parents fled civil war in Sierra Leone and who was exposed to the sport when his father worked as a caretaker at a tennis center in Maryland, had the sold-out crowd in his corner, especially after he saved a match point in the fourth set. Alcaraz beat Ruud in straight sets in the Miami Open final in April. "It's amazing to be able to fight for big things. First time in a final of a Grand Slam. I can see the number one in the world and at the same time it is so far away," Alcaraz said. "I have one more to go against a player who plays unbelievable. He deserves to play in the final. He played the final of a Grand Slam in Roland Garros and this is my first time. "I'm going to give everything I have."

World number one Daniil Medvedev bowed out of the US Open 2022 edition, losing to Australia's Nick Krygios in the fourth round at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. In a pulsating battle, Medvedev went down to the Wimbledon 2022 runners-up as he lost 6-7 (11), 6-3, 3-6, 2-6. Given the Russian was the defending champion, his exit has surely made heads turn as the ongoing edition will now surely see a new winner in men's singles.

Well, Medvedev's exit not only means the men's singles category will see a new champion this time around at the US Open, but the Russian will also lose his top spot in the ATP rankings. Thus, a new world number one is also on the cards following the 26-year-old's early exit. Spain's Rafael Nadal is a favourite to reclaim the top spot as he remains in the race to bag the top prize in the last Grand Slam of the year. As per the ATP website, young guns Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud can also be crowned the No. 1 spot if they go the distance and clinch the title.

Rafael Nadal, Ruud or Alcaraz? Who will take the No. 1 spot after Daniil Medvedev's US Open exit

Teenager Carlos Alcaraz fended off a late push from veteran Argentine Federico Coria to emerge with a 6-2 6-1 7-5 win on Thursday to reach the U.S. Open third round where he will face American Jenson Brooksby.

The young Spaniard used his all-court speed and punishing forehand to win the final 10 points of the first set and broke Coria's serve to open the second to cruise to a 2-0 sets lead.

Coria refused to go down without a fight and pushed Alcaraz in a marathon game at 4-4 in the third set.

But the third seed, who saved 14 of the 15 break points he faced in the match, rifled two unreturnable serves to get out of trouble and sealed the win with a two-handed backhand for his 46th victory of the year.

"It's been a great year for me but it's not the end of the year," Alcaraz said.

Next up Alcaraz is a meeting with Brooksby who beat Cincinnati Open champion and 25th seed Borna Coric 6-4 7-6(10) 6-1 earlier in the day.

The Californian saved seven set points in the tense second set to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows for the second consecutive year. Last year, he took the first set off Novak Djokovic before falling to the tournament's finalist.

"I was proud of my mental resolve to be able to save a lot of set points like that in a row and just stay in the present," Brooksby told reporters.

"I was able to focus on what I have been working on, and to see that come through today is a great feeling."

Brooksby's emphatic shouts of "Come on!" got under Coric's skin leading the Croatian to tell the chair umpire that while he respected the 21-year-old's fight, "It's a bit too much, it's every point".

"I am very happy to be the player with the most victories but I have to look forward and go for it." Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz tames Federico Coria to reach US Open third round

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev started his Western & Southern Open campaign on a winning note as he defeated Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands on Tuesday. The World No. 1 faced a tough test against the Dutch. He made a fast start behind an instant break but had to survive the second set to secure a 6-4, 7-5 victory and advance to the third round in Cincinnati. The second set of the match was hard fought, Medvedev built a lead of a set and a break but immediately surrendered his advantage as van de Zandschulp levelled at 3-3 in the second.

The top seed survived thanks to an error from his opponent, then broke for the third time in the match as van de Zandschulp double-faulted three times on serve at 5-all."The second set was not that clean," ATP.com quoted Medvedev as saying. "The first set was great. Everything was working. I had three games where I had break points but managed to break in the first game, which was enough," said Medvedev, who surrendered a break advantage and saved a set point on serve in the set.

"The second set was going not that bad. He was not serving especially well today, doing a lot of double faults. So I tried to keep pressure and use my chances. Actually, in return, I feel like I did a good job. Two breaks on these fast courts are enough to win and I should have done a little bit better on my serve. But the first match is tricky and I`m happy that I managed to go through, and hopefully I will raise my level in the next matches," he added.

Cincinnati Masters: Daniil Medvedev downs Van de Zandschulp to enter R3; Carlos Alcaraz defeats McDonald

The nineteen-year-old Carlos Alcaraz on Monday created history when he climbed to the No. 5 spot in the ATP Rankings, becoming the second-youngest player in the 21st century to reach the top five. Spaniard is the youngest man to achieve this feat since his outstanding compatriot Rafael Nadal first rose into the top five in 2005 while still 18. Alcaraz had a chance to break into World No. 4 but had to settle for No. 5 after losing in the Hamburg European Open final against Lorenzo Musetti.

While Daniil Medvedev remained the world number one, 2022 Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic settled on the seventh position after the grass-court Grand Slam tournament was stripped of ranking points for banning Russian and Belarusian players."It means a lot. The hard work that I put in every day for reaching my dreams, [No.] 1, and little by little I`m reaching my dream. Top five for me is pretty amazing and I will keep going to be [No.] 1," ATP.com quoted Alcaraz as saying.

ATP Rankings: Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz becomes youngest player since Rafael Nadal to storm into top 5

Carlos Alcaraz stayed on course for a potential quarter-final showdown with six-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic after taking care of tricky German opponent Oscar Otte with a no-nonsense 6-3 6-1 6-2 third-round win on Friday.

Otte had stretched twice champion Andy Murray to five sets in a late-night second-round blockbuster 12 months ago but any hopes of a repeat were quickly extinguished by the fifth seed who seems to have found his comfort zone on grass.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who had won only one match on grass before this year`s championships, appears to have found his feet on the lush surface as he saved the only break point he faced on Friday while capturing his opponent`s serve six times.

He wrapped up the contest when Otte misfired the ball into the sky and will next face Italian 10th seed Jannik Sinner. If he wins that match and Djokovic beats Dutch wildcard Tim van Rijthoven, the pair will meet in the last eight next week.

Wimbledon 2022: Carlos Alcaraz moves into 4th round with comfortable win over Oscar Otte

It might not have been the workout Carlos Alcaraz was hoping for as he nursed a sore elbow but the Spaniard showed why he is considered the next big thing as he toppled Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6 7-5 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 in the Wimbledon first round.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed an incredible season on clay and hardcourts -- winning titles in Rio, Miami, Barcelona and Madrid -- and on Monday he proved he has the skills and mental belief to succeed on the sport`s slickest surface.

Despite still being a grasscourt novice, fifth seed Alcaraz did not let German Struff`s 218kph hurtling serves or the disappointment of losing two of the opening three sets faze him.

Facing an opponent he described as "big serve, big shots", Alcaraz kept his nerve to fire down 30 aces and produced an assortment of breathtaking passing shots to secure only his second ever win on grass.

"I feel pretty good, playing here is amazing," the beaming teenager, whose debut appearance at Wimbledon ended in the second round 12 months ago, told the crowd.

"I didn`t expect to move as well as I did today. I don`t know how I did this (hit 30 aces) as this is probably my best match serving.

"This means I like to play on grass and I don`t want to leave the court."

In their only previous meeting, Struff beat Alcaraz in straight sets in the third round at last year`s Roland Garros. But since that showdown, their careers have headed in opposite directions.

While Alcaraz shot up 90 spots in the rankings to break into the top 10, Struff`s fortunes have nosedived and this month he dropped outside the top 100 for the first time in five years.

But during Monday`s opening exchanges, few would have guessed that Struff only classified as the 155th best player in the world.

With the balls flying off the lush green surface of Court One, Alcaraz was left rolling his eyes time and again as he kept coming off second best in the fast-paced exchanges with the 32-year-old German.

But what the grasscourt novice lacked in experience, he more than made up for with his determination to succeed.
"Here everything (is) going faster. I don`t go fast to the net," said the youngest player in the men`s draw who will next meet Dutch journeyman Tallon Griekspoor.

"I would say my level on grass has to improve a little bit. I`m not experienced player on grass. For me ... (it) is more difficult to move on grass than the other surfaces."

Being forced to skip the Wimbledon warm-up tournaments with an elbow injury did not help the Spaniard`s cause, but the way he hung in for four hours and 11 minutes to keep alive his Wimbledon dreams proved a point to him -- and his rivals.
