The Spanish star came through 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 against his 112th-ranked opponent and will face Canada's Denis Shapovalov for a place in the fourth round. <h2>Alcaraz through to Last 32</h2>

"I'm very happy with my level. The wind meant conditions were really difficult so I had to adjust as much as possible, I was very focused on each shot," said Alcaraz.

The match on Wednesday gave Alcaraz a 22nd win from 24 on clay in 2023, a run which has yielded titles on the surface in Buenos Aires, Madrid and Barcelona.

"Taro was playing great. He is a really tough player and this year he has won matches against great players," said Alcaraz who is top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time.

On Wednesday, he fired 46 winners past New York-born Daniel.

Shapovalov, the 26th seed, saw off Italy's Matteo Arnaldi in four sets to reach the third round in Paris for the first time.

<h2>Wawrinka knocked out</h2>

Thanasi Kokkinakis knocked 38-year-old Stan Wawrinka out of the French Open on Wednesday in a five-set rollercoaster to book a third round place at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015.

Australian world number 108 Kokkinakis came through 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3 in four hours and 38 minutes against the 2015 champion.

"I feel better now that I've won," said the 27-year-old after securing victory on a fifth match point.&nbsp;

"What a match. I know Stan is getting older but in the first set he was playing the best. I was nowhere, just hanging in."

Kokkinakis, who described Wawrinka, a three-time major winner, as a "legend" of the sport, last made the third round in Paris eight years ago when he was just 19.

However, he has been plagued by physical and medical problems with a shoulder injury limiting him to just one singles match from November 2015 until May 2017.

He then missed the entire 2020 season due to mono before undergoing surgery on his sinuses in 2022.

"I've had a pretty crazy story. I came on the scene when I was pretty young, looked like I was set for a big future but I went missing for a few years," he said.

French Open: Alcaraz overcomes wobble to reach last 32; Wawrinka knocked out by Kokkinakis

Novak Djokovic will eye a place in the history books as he chases yet another French Open title with Rafael Nadal not participating in the Paris Grand Slam. An unprecedented 23rd title will be on the agenda for Djokovic which will see him crowned as the most successful men’s singles player ahead of Nadal and Roger Federer. Standing in his way will be world no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, former French Open runners-up Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Casper Ruud for the upcoming two weeks.

<h2>Djokovic eyes place in history book</h2>

Having captured his 22nd Grand Slam at the Australian Open, Djokovic will be prepared to add yet another to his trophy cabinet. A win at this Roland-Garros will also see him close the gap on the all-time most singles titles of Margaret Court with 24. As things stand, the two-time champion is set to face stern competition from US Open champion Alcaraz as he has been knocking on the doors for a while for a big title.

Alcaraz is looked at as the successor to Rafael Nadal, with the latter not participating in the tournament due to a hip issue. Stefanos Tsitsipas is another contender who can put a spanner in the work of Djokovic having come close in the 2021 edition. Tsitsipas recently parted ways with his coach but still has enough in his arsenal to upset the odds. His clay court record also makes good reading having won the Monte Carlo Open in 2022.

Daniil Medvedev is also another contender to lift holy-grail as he comes with fresh memories of winning the Italian Open. Last year he missed the French Open with a hernia surgery and also remains the only man to have defeated Djokovic in a Grand Slam final. He won the 2021 US Open final to deny the Serb an opportunity to win a season Grand Slam.

Other top contenders in the Men’s draw remain, Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, and Andrey Rublev. Rune was runner-up in the recently concluded Italian Open while Rublev pocketed the Monte Carlo and has enough in the bank to go all the way and win the title.

<h2>Iga Swiatek favourite in Women’s draw?</h2>

Iga Swiatek, defending champion will be the favourite to win clinch another title at the French capital but standing in her way will be Australian Open champion and runner-up Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina respectively. The latter also comes with momentum on her side having won the Wimbledon title and the Italian Open.

French Open Preview: Novak Djokovic eyes record 23rd Grand Slam title as Alcaraz, Ruud stand in way

World number one Carlos Alcaraz faces a tough path to a maiden French Open title after being placed in the same half of the draw as 22-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic on Thursday. In the absence of 14-times winner and defending champion Rafael Nadal, who will miss the claycourt major through injury, all eyes are on Djokovic and Alcaraz.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who will play a qualifier in the opening round, could face some treacherous match-ups en route to a potential semi-final against world number three Djokovic with 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas, Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the top quarter of the draw. Djokovic, who starts against Aleksandar Kovacevic, has a seemingly smooth journey to the last four with Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev his main threat.

World number two Daniil Medvedev, who plays a qualifier in the first round, is in the lower part of the draw and could face either last year's runner-up Casper Ruud or Norway's Holger Rune. Sixth seed Rune won the Munich title on clay this season and reached the final in Monte Carlo and Rome, losing to Medvedev in the Italian capital.

"It's going to be an emotional edition of the French Open after (tournament director) Amelie Mauresmo received a call from Rafael Nadal saying he could not take part in the tournament," French federation president Gilles Moretton said.

"It will also be emotional because it marks the 40th anniversary of Yannick Noah's triumph at Roland Garros."

No French man has won the singles' title since 1983 and it would take a miracle to see one of them lift the Musketeers Cup on June 11. In the women's draw, defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek will start against Cristina Bucsa, the world number 67.

She faces a potential quarter-final clash against Coco Gauff, the American she beat in last year's final. Swiatek, who retired in Rome with a thigh injury, has already started practising at Roland Garros this week. Anhelina Kalinina, who reached the final in Rome earlier this month, could stand in Gauff's way in the third round.

French hopes will rest on the shoulders of fifth seed Caroline Garcia, who is on a quarter-final collision course with second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Belarusian Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, beat Swiatek in the final of the Madrid Open last month.

Rome champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan is expected to have a smooth run to the last eight, where she could face Tunisian seventh seed Ons Jabeur.

Tennis: Tough road ahead for Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion Iga Swiatek for French Open title

The Big Three in tennis, such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, have ruled the sport for several years. In recent times, a lot has been said and written about the generational shift waiting to take place with a plethora of young talents -- Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud,&nbsp;Dane Holger Rune, etc. -- looking set to rule the circuit for long.

With Djokovic's quarter-final defeat in the ongoing Italian Open 2023 edition, the Serb feels the 'new generation is here already'. “A new generation is here already,” Djokovic told reporters. “Alcaraz is No. 1 in the world from Monday, obviously he’s playing amazing tennis. I think it’s also good for our sport that we have new faces, new guys coming up," he further opined.

<h2>'I’m personally still trying to hang in there'</h2>

Djokovic asserted, "We’ve been saying this for years that we can expect that moment to come when you have a kind of shift of generations." He further added, "I'm personally still trying to hang in there with all of them. I still have the hunger to keep going. Let’s see how far I’m going to play."

While Federer retired in 2022, Nadal has been out of action due to injury concerns -- also withdrawing from the upcoming French Open 2023 on Thursday (May 18) -- whereas Djokovic has not remained consistent as he was some time back. Thus, there is a far chance that he might be stretched considerably in the forthcoming Roland Garros, commencing on May 22, for the mega title.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Nadal announced his decision to pull out of the French Open due to a hip injury. He will be out for months and also expects 2024 to probably be his last year in professional tennis.

'New generation is here already': Novak Djokovic on young talents after Rome quarter-final exit

Carlos&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;slumped to a third round defeat at the Italian Open by unheralded Hungarian Fabian Marozsan on Monday, just two weeks before he heads into the French Open as top seed.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, who is guaranteed to replace Novak Djokovic as world number one on May 22, had come into the tournament in Rome on the back of wins in Barcelona and Madrid.

But the US Open champion was outplayed by 23-year-old Marozsan, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

Marozsan, who is ranked 135th in the world, won the final six points of the second-set tie-break to give&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;a wake-up call with the French Open starting in less than a fortnight.

Alcaraz, who was second seed in Rome but in Paris will be top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time, said he required some sustained training to beef up his French Open preparations with the clay-court major beginning on May 28.

"I'm going to rest a little bit, some&nbsp;days off for me," he said. "I really need some days to reset my mind and be&nbsp;fresh for Roland Garros.

"If I want&nbsp;to go to Paris in good shape, I have to practise, to be&nbsp;better. I've been playing so much that I couldn't practise more than three, four days in a row.

"It's going to be really helpful for me to have days at home&nbsp;practising and getting ready to go to Roland Garros."

He admitted he was outplayed by his Hungarian opponent.

"He&nbsp;surprised me a lot,&nbsp;his level was really, really high. I'm sure he's going to break the top 100 very, very soon."

Marozsan, who next plays Borna Coric for a place in the quarter-finals, had not won a match on the ATP Tour prior to the tournament -- indeed this is the first time he has qualified for the main draw at a tournament on the Tour.&nbsp;

"Everything was perfect today, I was doing my job," the winner said. "I cannot imagine this win, even if it was my dream last night.

"I thought I might win a few games or a set."

Marozsan produced 24 winners in a victory which took an hour and three quarters.&nbsp;

"I had hoped I could do something special," he said. "Now I've just beaten the&nbsp;best in the sport so I'm very happy."

Alcaraz&nbsp;now stands 30-3 for the season.

<h2>Medvedev reaches last 16</h2>

Third seed Daniil Medvedev needed a fightback to defeat Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, with the winner producing his best career effort at the tournament by reaching the last 16.

It will be the first time since 1994 that no Spaniard has made it to the fourth round at the Foro Italico.

"This was my third win on clay from a set down," five-time Masters 1000 champion Medvedev said. "I managed to play better -- I'm definitely happy with my level.

"I'm playing my best tennis on clay -- I've never played so well in Rome and I'm feeling great."

Sixth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (10/8), 6-3.

Three men's matches were left incomplete by evening rain, while two women's ties were delayed.

Women's world number one Iga Swiatek, the reigning Italian and French Open champion, will now face Donna Vekic in their last-16 match on Tuesday.

Fifth seed and 2022 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas led Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 when the rain came, Lorenzo Musetti led 12th seed Frances Tiafoe 5-7, 6-4, 2-1 and Alexander Zverev was 6-4, 3-3 in front of JJ Wolf.

Wimbledon champion and women's seventh seed Elena Rybakina reached the quarter-finals by beating Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-3.

But the US Open champion was outplayed by 23-year-old Marozsan, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/4). Also Read: Barcelona president Joan Laporta says club will 'do everything possible' to bring Lionel Messi to Camp Nou Marozsan, who is ranked 135th in the world, won the final six points of the second-set tie-break to give Alcaraz a wake-up call with the French Open starting in less than a fortnight. Alcaraz, who was second seed in Rome but in Paris will be top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time, said he required some sustained training to beef up his French Open preparations with the clay-court major beginning on May 28. "I'm going to rest a little bit, some days off for me," he said. "I really need some days to reset my mind and be fresh for Roland Garros. "If I want to go to Paris in good shape, I have to practise, to be better. I've been playing so much that I couldn't practise more than three, four days in a row. "It's going to be really helpful for me to have days at home practising and getting ready to go to Roland Garros." He admitted he was outplayed by his Hungarian opponent. "He surprised me a lot, his level was really, really high. I'm sure he's going to break the top 100 very, very soon." Marozsan, who next plays Borna Coric for a place in the quarter-finals, had not won a match on the ATP Tour prior to the tournament -- indeed this is the first time he has qualified for the main draw at a tournament on the Tour. "Everything was perfect today, I was doing my job," the winner said. "I cannot imagine this win, even if it was my dream last night. "I thought I might win a few games or a set." Marozsan produced 24 winners in a victory which took an hour and three quarters. "I had hoped I could do something special," he said. "Now I've just beaten the best in the sport so I'm very happy." Alcaraz now stands 30-3 for the season. Medvedev reaches last 16 Third seed Daniil Medvedev needed a fightback to defeat Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, with the winner producing his best career effort at the tournament by reaching the last 16. It will be the first time since 1994 that no Spaniard has made it to the fourth round at the Foro Italico. "This was my third win on clay from a set down," five-time Masters 1000 champion Medvedev said. "I managed to play better -- I'm definitely happy with my level. "I'm playing my best tennis on clay -- I've never played so well in Rome and I'm feeling great." Sixth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (10/8), 6-3. World no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz crashes out of Rome Masters

Carlos Alcaraz marked his return to the world number one ranking by comfortably seeing off fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his first ever match at the Italian Open on Saturday as the women's draw lost its fourth top 10 player.

In-form Alcaraz ensured top spot just by taking to the court to play his second round match in Rome as he seeks a third straight tournament win.

The 20-year-old, who saw off Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 6-1, will overtake Novak Djokovic at the top of the ATP rankings and is now assured of the top seeding at the French Open later this month.

He came through in a match which started several hours late due to the pelting rain which drenched the Italian capital for much of the early part of Saturday.

"The conditions here weren't easy, the rain, the waiting all day, not knowing if I was going to play or not. It was tough," said Alcaraz.

He added: "For me it doesn't change too much to be number one or number two seed. I just focus on the tournament and on my game."

The Spaniard became the youngest ever world number one thanks to his US Open triumph last September, with Djokovic denied entry to the United States because of his Covid vaccination status.

Alcaraz will begin his 23rd week at world number one on May 22.

The second seed arrived in the Italian capital on a fine run after back-to-back clay court titles in Barcelona and Madrid, and he made short work of Ramos-Vinolas.

He took control of the match in what turned out to be the final game of the first set, breaking Ramos-Vinolas to take the lead in what had been up to that point a hard-fought match.

From there Alcaraz went through the gears, unleashing a wide repertoire of shots which left Ramos-Vinolas bamboozled and set up a third-round clash with either Jiri Lehecka or Fabian Marozsan.

<h2>Osorio stuns Garcia</h2>

Caroline Garcia became the latest big hitter to be dumped out of the women's tournament after the world number four lost 6-4, 6-4 to outsider Camila Osorio.

Qualifier Osorio almost broke down in tears after her shock straight sets victory in a match which started two hours late and was interrupted for more than an hour at the start of the second set.

A career-best win for world number 100 Osorio puts her in the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.

She will face either Beatriz Haddad Maia or Magda Linette in the next round.

"I literally have no words to describe what I'm feeling right now," said Osorio on court.

"I've been struggling a little bit with my injuries and now that I'm back playing and beating the number four in the world I can't believe it.

"I'm just super happy and proud about how I managed to stay calm and finish the match."

Garcia joins world number two Aryna Sabalenka, third-ranked Jessica Pegula and world number seven Ons Jabeur in being dumped out of the tournament.

Andrey Rublev was one of the few lucky ones to escape the early rain, finishing off Alex Molcan 6-3, 6-4.

Italian Open: Carlos Alcaraz marks return to world number one with victory in Rome

Novak Djokovic said on Thursday that Carlos Alcaraz is the man to beat at the Italian Open, but reassured fans that he "feels good" after his recent elbow injury. Top seed Djokovic comes into the clay-court tournament, where he has been champion six times, braced to lose top spot in the world rankings to Alcaraz.

The flamboyant Spaniard, fresh from back-to-back clay titles in Barcelona and Madrid, just needs to play a match in the Italian capital to return to the summit ahead of the French Open which starts later this month.

"He's going to be number one after this tournament and if it happens, it will be deservedly so. He plays very impressive tennis, a great level. He's the player to beat on this surface no doubt," said Djokovic, who starts his title defence against Argentina's Tomas Etcheverry on Friday.

Djokovic won a record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January but missed the American hard-court swing in March due to his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid. The 35-year-old has endured a tough start to the European clay-court season, being eliminated in the last 16 at the Monte Carlo Masters, in the quarter-finals at Banja Luka and then pulling out of Madrid with his elbow problem.

However, Djokovic said that he had overcome the physical problems which have blighted this part of his season.

"It's all good. There are always some things here and there that bother you at this level," he added. "It's normal. When you're not 20-25 anymore you experience that a bit more than what used to be the case.

"I feel good... Historically throughout my career Rome has been a very nice tournament for me, I had success in it many times, got to finals.

"It's my most successful clay court event. Coming into the French Open it can be a great springboard for what's coming up in Paris where I want to be at my best."

While Djokovic plots a seventh title in Rome, women's world number two Aryna Sabalenka's hopes of a maiden crown in the Italian capital were crushed. The Australian Open champion, fresh from a clay court title in Madrid last weekend, lost 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to US world number 134 Sofia Kenin.

Kenin's victory was her first against a top-10 rival since shocking world number one Ashleigh Barty on her way to her surprise Australian Open title three years ago.

Sabalenka had not been defeated before the quarter-finals of any event this year and came into Rome as the match-win leader in 2023 with 29 match wins.

"Obviously super happy, I played really well," former world number four Kenin said. "Of course she's had some great results, great year, so of course going into the match there's not much pressure on my side."

Italian Open: 'Carlos Alcaraz is the man to beat...,' says top-seed Novak Djokovic

The Madrid Open concluded on May 07 (Sunday) with&nbsp;Carlos Alcaraz and&nbsp;Aryna Sabalenka winning the singles title (in men&nbsp;and women&nbsp;category, respectively). On the other hand, Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia won the women's doubles whereas&nbsp;Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev clinched the title in the men's category. However, the event made heads turn for quite a lot of wrong reasons.

The tournament has been thrashed left, right, and centre for its unsavoury treatment of&nbsp;female players. From silencing the women&nbsp;finalists, and 'sexist' ball girl&nbsp;outfits to contrasting birthday cakes presented to Alcaraz and Sabalenka, many strange decisions taken by the organisers left tennis fans fuming.&nbsp;

Silencing women finalists

American duo Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff conceded the women's doubles final to Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia, losing&nbsp;1-6, 4-6. To the surprise of many,&nbsp;none of the players were allowed to address the audience. However, the same was not the case for the men's doubles finalists.

"What happened in Madrid, it was really disappointing ... I had a feeling something was going to happen," Pegula told reporters, on Tuesday (May 9), prior to the commencement of the ongoing&nbsp;Italian Open.

"Did I think we were not going to be able to speak? No. I've never heard of that ... in my life. I don't know what century everyone was living in when they made that decision," the world number three Pegula added.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport quoted organisers as saying of the decision: "The tournament will not comment on the matter."

The 19-year-old Gauff highlighted, "I have a lot of finals, so it's not about that," she told reporters. "It's more about the principle behind it, so this can't happen again for future girls, take the opportunity away from them."

Sexist ballgirl outfits

Moreover, the organisers were severely criticised&nbsp;for dressing the ball girls on the main court in crop tops and short skirts. After the backlash, the skirts were swapped for long shorts ahead of the men's singles final, on&nbsp;Sunday, however,&nbsp;the crop tops remained as is.

Pilar Calvo, spokesperson for The Association for Women in Professional Sports, told Spanish outlet Público, “It’s a feminized way of treating girls versus guys who don’t dress like that. In the end, it is a form of sexist violence that is so widespread because people don’t even notice it."

Cake gate

Not only this, birthday cakes presented to Alcaraz and Sabalenka also drew criticism on social media platforms. A&nbsp;fan posted two photos on Twitter indicating the difference in size of the birthday cakes given to Alcaraz and Sabalenka. The two&nbsp;share a birthday on May 5.

Tournament director Feliciano López also joined in and said in defence, "I’m surprised by this reaction after this gesture! 1. Carlos had just won his match to reach the final. 2. He was playing on centre court. 3. The tournament is played in Spain."

While the Madrid Open has ended, the tournament has concluded with more questions than answers with regard to the treatment meted out to male and female players in world sports.

Madrid Open sexism row: From silencing women finalists, cake gate to controversial ball girl outfits

Carlos&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;celebrated "being almost at the door" of becoming the top ranked tennis player in the world again after defending his Madrid Open title on Sunday.

The Spaniard earned his 10th career title with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Struff and can reclaim the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic simply by playing a single match at the Rome Masters next week, before the French Open.

Currently ranked second,&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;spent 20 weeks in the top spot after his US Open triumph in September, becoming the youngest player to reach world number one.

Djokovic's Australian Open triumph saw him depose&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;but the 20-year-old confirmed he would play next week in the Italian capital.

"These are very nice achievements, winning my fourth Masters 1000, defending my title here and being almost at the door of recovering the number one spot,"&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;told a news conference.

"These are very big things I'm doing, and I'm very proud of the work and of these accomplishments. I am ambitious and we'll try and go for Rome."

Alcaraz&nbsp;continued his Roland Garros build-up by adding the Madrid trophy to victories in Barcelona, Buenos Aires and Indian Wells this year, although he was below his best against lucky loser Struff, the world number 65.

The triumph and his impending return to the top of the rankings reiterated his bright future at the game's summit.

Alcaraz&nbsp;said his only worry for his future in tennis is injury, rather than any mental aspects.

"You have to try to take care of yourself as much as possible," said&nbsp;Alcaraz.

"The mental issue, of getting tired of winning, travelling or playing tennis, doesn't worry me because I know it's not going to happen.

"What may worry me in the future is the issue of injuries, which is what we are going to try to take care of together with my team."

<h2>Title defence</h2>

Alcaraz&nbsp;was given a tricky time by his German opponent but eventually became the youngest player since Rafael Nadal in 2006 to defend an ATP Masters 1000 title.&nbsp;

Despite being 13 years&nbsp;Alcaraz's senior, Struff showed nerves in the first game and conceded a break in only his second tour-level final.

Struff soon found his range and broke to love for 2-2 as he showed&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;he would be no pushover, despite the strong home support and their disparity in ranking, and then won a third consecutive game.&nbsp;

However&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;broke again for a 4-3 lead and survived a triple break point to win the first set.

Struff's power game created plenty of problems of&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;-- hitting 14 winners in the first set to the Spaniard's seven.&nbsp;

"I knew bombs would come my way, Jan is very aggressive," said&nbsp;Alcaraz.

Struff roared into a 3-0 lead in the second set and produced a remarkable hold in the 15-minute fifth game for 4-1, saving five break points as&nbsp;Alcaraz's hitting deserted him.

The 33-year-old served it out as&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;dropped only his second set of the tournament and first in a Masters 1000 final.

However the top seed broke for a 3-1 lead in the third set and it proved decisive,&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;eventually clinching victory when his opponent sent a backhand long.

"Of course I wanted to go all the way to win today, but I would definitely say if someone told me two weeks ago you're gonna play the finals, I would take it," said Struff who had initially lost in qualifying last weekend before being awarded a 'lucky loser' slot in the main draw following injury pull-outs.

On Saturday, world number two Aryna Sabalenka beat top-ranked Iga Swiatek to win the women's title in the Spanish capital.

Alcaraz said his only worry for his future in tennis is injury, rather than any mental aspects. "You have to try to take care of yourself as much as possible," said Alcaraz. "The mental issue, of getting tired of winning, travelling or playing tennis, doesn't worry me because I know it's not going to happen. "What may worry me in the future is the issue of injuries, which is what we are going to try to take care of together with my team." Title defence Alcaraz was given a tricky time by his German opponent but eventually became the youngest player since Rafael Nadal in 2006 to defend an ATP Masters 1000 title. Despite being 13 years Alcaraz's senior, Struff showed nerves in the first game and conceded a break in only his second tour-level final. Struff soon found his range and broke to love for 2-2 as he showed Alcaraz he would be no pushover, despite the strong home support and their disparity in ranking, and then won a third consecutive game. However Alcaraz broke again for a 4-3 lead and survived a triple break point to win the first set. Struff's power game created plenty of problems of Alcaraz -- hitting 14 winners in the first set to the Spaniard's seven. "I knew bombs would come my way, Jan is very aggressive," said Alcaraz. Struff roared into a 3-0 lead in the second set and produced a remarkable hold in the 15-minute fifth game for 4-1, saving five break points as Alcaraz's hitting deserted him. The 33-year-old served it out as Alcaraz dropped only his second set of the tournament and first in a Masters 1000 final. However the top seed broke for a 3-1 lead in the third set and it proved decisive, Alcaraz eventually clinching victory when his opponent sent a backhand long. Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz on the verge of becoming world no. 1 after defending Madrid Open title

Carlos Alcaraz celebrated "being almost at the door" of becoming the top ranked tennis player in the world again after defending his Madrid Open title on Sunday.

The Spaniard earned his 10th career title with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Struff and can reclaim the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic simply by playing a single match at the Rome Masters next week, before the French Open.

Currently ranked second, Alcaraz spent 20 weeks in the top spot after his US Open triumph in September, becoming the youngest player to reach world number one.

Djokovic's Australian Open triumph saw him depose Alcaraz but the 20-year-old confirmed he would play next week in the Italian capital.

"These are very nice achievements, winning my fourth Masters 1000, defending my title here and being almost at the door of recovering the number one spot," Alcaraz told a news conference.

"These are very big things I'm doing, and I'm very proud of the work and of these accomplishments. I am ambitious and we'll try and go for Rome."

Madrid Open: Carlos Alcaraz edges closer to World No 1 spot after hard-fought final win against Jan Struff

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz celebrated his 20th birthday by storming into the Madrid Open final with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Borna Coric on Friday to stay on track for his fourth title of the season. In Sunday's title clash, the top-seeded Spaniard will face off against lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff, who battled from a set down to beat qualifier Aslan Karatsev 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

"It means a lot to me, playing a final again here in Madrid. It's such a special place for me. I have great memories since I came here to play Under-12s," Alcaraz said. "Last year it was amazing. I'll enjoy the final and try to make all of Spain happy. I don't think about the pressure here. I just think about playing great matches and getting good results. I enjoy every single second here."

Alcaraz has enjoyed a spectacular start to his career, becoming the youngest man to top the world rankings after his U.S. Open win last September and has already claimed three Masters 1000 titles as a teenager.

He took a big step towards another Masters crown and stamped his credentials as one of the favourites for this month's French Open on a warm afternoon at the Manolo Santana Stadium with six-times Roland Garros champion Bjorn Borg watching on.

World number two Alcaraz heaped the pressure on Coric in their first career meeting and faced stiff resistance from the Croatian 17th seed before drawing first blood with a searing forehand in the fifth game of a physical opening set.

After wrapping up the first set, Alcaraz grabbed an early break and despite a wobble on his own serve, raced to a 4-2 lead in the next as he dictated terms against a fading Coric. He swiftly closed out his 28th win in 30 matches this year and celebrated by cutting a massive cake on court.

FAIRYTALE RUN

Struff lost to Russia's Karatsev 10 days ago in the final round of qualifying but was added to the main draw after a late withdrawal. He has since enjoyed a fine run, ousting world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-final.

The German was made to work hard for the win by Karatsev - who struggled with a leg issue late in their semi-final - and will now bid for a first ATP title in his second final.

"It's amazing... I've played one final before in Munich (in 2021) with no crowd because of COVID," Struff said. "Now, here an amazing crowd and I think on Sunday maybe not all will be rooting for me but it's fine. I'm happy to reach the final and happy to win."

In Saturday's women's final, world number one Iga Swiatek faces Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Madrid Open: Wonder boy Carlos Alcaraz reaches final, to face Jan-Lennard Struff in Sunday's summit clash

Defending champion and world number two Carlos Alcaraz defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday to reach the Madrid Open semi-finals.

The top seed, who turns 20 on Friday, fought his way back from 4-1 and 5-2 down in the second set to triumph in one hour 52 minutes.

"It was decided by small details and I am very, very happy to be able to get through this round."

The Russian, who knocked out compatriot Andrey Rublev this week and also reached the Australian Open semi-finals, showed no fear in the first set despite his opponent's form.

Eventually Alcaraz found a decisive break to take a 4-3 lead with a strong forehand which Khachanov could not return successfully.

The Spaniard consolidated and served it out.

Alcaraz's perseverence paid off as he broke with a volley to get back on serve at 4-5.

The US Open champion consolidated his break and then earned another when Khachanov hit the net with an attempted forehand winner.

Madrid Open: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz defeats Karen Khachanov to reach semis

Carlos Alcaraz expects Rafa Nadal to perform at a "spectacular level" at the French Open if the 14-times champion can overcome his injury issues ahead of the year's second Grand Slam. Nadal skipped the ongoing Madrid Open after a setback in his recovery from a hip injury sustained at the Australian Open in January. The 22-times major champion also missed tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Alcaraz has emerged as favourite for Roland Garros after victories on clay at Buenos Aires and Barcelona but the world number two said Nadal cannot be written off and hopes his fellow Spaniard will return next week in Rome. "Hopefully he will be in Rome and then at Roland Garros, where he will be a rival to beat," Alcaraz told reporters after beating Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-2 on Tuesday to reach the Madrid quarter-finals.

"Although he hasn't played since Australia, a man who has won a tournament 14 times will always be difficult to beat in that tournament, even if he comes without match rhythm. "It'll also be difficult for him,&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;requires that competitive rhythm, but Rafa is Rafa, even if he arrives without many matches, he'll surely show a spectacular level."

Alcaraz, who turns 20 on Friday, said reports of Nadal's return were encouraging as he hoped to continue learning from the 36-year-old. "I say this as a player and as a&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;lover," Alcaraz said. "It's been a pity all these months where we haven't been able to see him in tournaments."

World number two Carlos Alcaraz says Rafael Nadal still the man to beat at Roland Garros

World number two and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday set up a Madrid Open last 16 duel with Alexander Zverev, the German rival who handed him a heartbreaking, reality-check defeat at Roland Garros last year.

Alcaraz defeated Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-2, 7-5 in the Madrid third round as he continues his bid to win a 10th tour title before his 20th birthday.

The Spanish crowd-pleaser was briefly troubled when 31-year-old Dimitrov broke for a 4-2 lead in the second set.

However, that merely delayed the inevitable as Alcaraz wrapped up victory in 90 minutes, making just four unforced errors. It was his 25th win of 2023 against just two losses and a 15th victory on clay.

The 19-year-old swept past Zverev in the Madrid final in 2022 for the loss of just four games.

However, just weeks later, the German claimed a four-set victory in the French Open quarter-finals. That was Zverev's third win in the pair's four meetings.

"I really want to play that match. We played a few times, head-to-head he is up," said Alcaraz.

"I really want to show my great level here in front of my home crowd. I have great memories from last year in the final but obviously I have to be really focussed in that match.&nbsp;

He added: "I know that Sascha is a really good player, a really aggressive one with good serves. I have to show all my skills."

Two-time Madrid champion Zverev needed just 56 minutes earlier Sunday to dispose of France's Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 on the back of six breaks of serve and 26 winners.

"With Carlos it will be a match-up people will look forward to," said 16th-ranked Zverev.

"We played in the final here last year, played a massive match at Roland Garros before I got injured (in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal)."

Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina toppled world number seven Holger Rune 7-6 (7/1), 5-7, 7-6 (7/5).

Rune, who turned 20 on Saturday, had saved a match point in the previous round against Alexander Bublik.

But it was Davidovich Fokina who came through the tight encounter to line up a clash with Borna Coric for a place in the last eight.

World number one Iga Swiatek claimed she had endured a "tricky" afternoon despite easing to a straight-sets win over American left-hander Bernarda Pera to reach the last 16 of the women's tournament in the Spanish capital.

Swiatek, warming up for the defence of her French Open title, claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win for a sixth consecutive victory on clay this season.

<h2>'Tricky'</h2>

"I wouldn't say it was easy. Every match is tricky here," Swiatek said after her 75-minute outing.

"I'm happy that I'm getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy... but I'm pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused."

Swiatek next faces 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova who came from a set down to see off Zheng Qinwen of China.

Also progressing to the fourth round was world number three Jessica Pegula, who clinched a gruelling 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) victory over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.

Pegula, 29, made the final in Madrid in 2022 where she lost to Ons Jabeur. She will now tackle Italy's Martina Trevisan on Monday for a quarter-final spot.

"With Carlos it will be a match-up people will look forward to," said 16th-ranked Zverev. "We played in the final here last year, played a massive match at Roland Garros before I got injured (in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal)." Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina toppled world number seven Holger Rune 7-6 (7/1), 5-7, 7-6 (7/5). 'Tricky' "I wouldn't say it was easy. Every match is tricky here," Swiatek said after her 75-minute outing. "I'm happy that I'm getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy... but I'm pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused." Swiatek next faces 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova who came from a set down to see off Zheng Qinwen of China. Tennis: Alcaraz beats Dimitrov to set up last 16 duel with Alexander Zverev at Madrid Open

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz survived a major scare before beating Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets to reach the Madrid Open third round on Friday but admitted he "didn't know what to do" at key parts of the match. World number two and US Open champion Alcaraz fought back to see off the 41st-ranked Finn, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

"It was really tough. I would say I was about to lose," said Alcaraz who famously defeated Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in Madrid last year. "It was complicated. There were moments that I didn't know what to do."

Alcaraz, fresh from defending his Barcelona title last weekend, will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the last 16. The 19-year-old Alcaraz hit 10 aces in his 36 winners but was forced to save nine of 11 break points in the 2hr 16min clash. Five of those came when he was 3-2 down in the second set.

"It was just one point," added Alcaraz. "One of the break points he had at 2-3 in the second set was like a match point for him. &nbsp;"I was really happy I was able to save that game and come back a bit. It was really tough. Emil played unbelievably, but I am really, really happy to get through that."

In an indication of his frustration, Alcaraz speared his racquet into the court as he was staring down the barrel in the sixth game of the second set.

- Swiatek in control -

"I don't support that type of thing, the racquet came out and I regret it," he admitted. In sharp contrast, women's world number one Iga Swiatek cantered to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Austrian lucky loser Julia Grabher.

Swiatek didn't play Madrid last year but that didn't dent her clay court form as she went on to capture a second French Open later in the season. After winning the Stuttgart title last weekend, the Pole is riding a five-match winning streak on the surface.

Swiatek will next face American left-hander Bernarda Pera who was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Germany's Tatjana Maria.

Pera is in the third round for the first time in five years.

World number seven Holger Rune saved a match point to defeat Alexander Bublik 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (11/9).

Last weekend's Munich champion and Monte Carlo Masters runner-up Rune saved the match point at 7/8 in the final set tie-break.

Matteo Arnaldi gained his first victory over a top-10 player as he upset third-seeded Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-4.

Arnaldi, a 22-year-old Italian ranked 105, who saved a match point against Benoit Paire in the first round, hit 35 winners on his way to a more comfortable victory over Ruud, who reached two Grand Slam finals last year.

"The ball bounces so high and I didn't like it at first. I struggled a bit," said Arnaldi.

Madrid Open 2023: Carlos Alcaraz survives scare to beat Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets, enters third round

Carlos Alcaraz insisted Sunday that he is not Rafael Nadal's "replacement" as the teenager comfortably defended his Barcelona title, bolstering his bid to succeed his compatriot as French Open champion.

The 19-year-old brushed aside Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 to add the Barcelona trophy to wins in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells in 2023. He now has nine career titles.

With 14-time French Open champion Nadal sidelined since January with a hip injury and world number one and two-time Roland Garros winner Novak Djokovic struggling with an elbow problem, Alcaraz reinforced his credentials as a major contender to add the clay-court Grand Slam title to the US Open he captured last year.

However, he was quick to dampen speculation that he is the French Open champion-in-waiting, just five weeks out from the second major of the year in Paris.

"I don't want to be anyone's replacement," said world number two Alcaraz when confronted with his status as heir apparent to Nadal who turns 37 in June.

Nadal hasn't played since his second round exit at the Australian Open and has missed Masters events at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo as well as sitting out Barcelona for a second successive year.

"In the two years that Rafa hasn't been here, I've been lucky or, let's say, I've won the title," said Alcaraz who defended his Barcelona title without dropping a set.&nbsp;

His win on Sunday was his fourth in four meetings against fifth-ranked Tsitsipas.

<h2>'Build our history'</h2>

"I've always wanted to play against the best, it's a shame that we haven't been able to enjoy Rafa these last two years," added Alcaraz.

"Let's hope he continues to play for a long time and that we can enjoy his tennis, but obviously we are not here to take over from anyone, but to build our own history."

Alcaraz's caution is justified. Despite Nadal's continuing injury woes, he boasts a stunning win-loss record at the French Open of 112 wins against just three losses since his title-winning 2005 debut.

Two of those defeats came against Djokovic who shares the men's record of 22 majors with Nadal.

Djokovic reached that mark with a 10th Australian Open victory in January.

Despite concerns over his elbow, he knows that traditionally he improves as the clay season progresses -- his record shows two Monte Carlo titles, three at Madrid and six in Rome, the last significant event before Roland Garros.

Djokovic has successfully bounced back from elbow worries in the past -- in February 2018, he needed surgery on the injury but still won Wimbledon and the US Open later that year.

Both Nadal and Djokovic are sitting out the Madrid Masters where Alcaraz is the defending champion.

"Roland Garros is a clear short-term objective," added Alcaraz.

"It's a tournament I really want to win, but now we are focused on Madrid and then Rome. Winning the tournament here in Barcelona gives me extra confidence for what's to come."

Holger Rune, like Alcaraz also just 19, defended his Munich title on Sunday but unlike the Spaniard, had to battle back from the brink of defeat.

Plagued by a shoulder injury, which needed a medical time-out, the Dane came back from 5-2 down in the third set and saved four match points to see off Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7/3) in a rematch of last year's final.

<h2>'Push hard'</h2>

"It is the last match and the last push, so you try to find a way," said Rune who heads to Madrid having never previously played in the tournament.

Also heading to Madrid with confidence is women's world number one Iga Swiatek, the reigning US and French Open champion.

On Sunday, she defeated Australian Open champion and second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4 to claim a second successive Stuttgart title.

"I wanted to win really, really hard, but I knew that I can't really focus on that and just I have to keep doing my job as I did in previous matches," said the Pole.

"I'm pretty happy that I could kind of have a good mentality and just focus on what I want to do tennis-wise."

Tennis: Alcaraz defeats Tsitsipas to win Barcelona title, says he's 'not Nadal's replacement'

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz swept past Dan Evans 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday to set up a Barcelona Open final clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.&nbsp;

The Greek second seed earlier defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to reach the final for the third time.&nbsp;

World number two Alcaraz beat Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals at Barcelona last year in three sets in what was the Spaniard's third win in three meetings against the Greek.

Alcaraz missed the Monte Carlo Masters last week because of hand and back problems and has not been at his most consistent on his way to the final.

An easy win over Nuno Borges was followed by trickier triumphs against Spanish compatriots Roberto Bautista Agut and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Chasing down his third title of the season after triumphs at Buenos Aires and Indian Wells, home favourite Alcaraz started impressively.

The 19-year-old top seed won the first game without dropping a point, sealing it with an ace, ominously for Evans, who was pulled all over the court.

Alcaraz broke for a 3-1 lead and the 2022 US Open champion showed little mercy from then on, winning six consecutive games before Evans broke for the first time, to trail 4-1 in the second set.

Alcaraz clinched victory after an hour and 20 minutes with another pinpoint winner past Evans.

Tsitsipas lost on both occasions he reached the Barcelona final against Rafael Nadal in 2018 and 2021.

"We had to cover lots of metres on the court and he had some incredible defensive shots that I really didn't expect at all, it was such a mental challenge," said Tsitsipas.

"I had to go out there and fight it all through (with) the determination of a lion, and just (went) out there to do the best I can."

Musetti twice went a break up in an entertaining first set, but Tsitsipas, runner-up at the Australian Open in January, battled back immediately both times.

The Italian saved match point in the second set at 5-4 down to force a decisive third set, but was outplayed by his opponent, who showed more focus than earlier on.&nbsp;

Tsitsipas survived a break point in the first game of the third set and then broke himself for 2-0, applying pressure on Musetti's serve.

Musetti did not have to play his quarter-final clash after Jannik Sinner withdrew through illness, but Tsitsipas was the stronger in the third set.

Tsitsipas wrapped up the win after two hours and 28 minutes, seeing out his final two service games without dropping a point.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic displaces Carlos Alcaraz to reclaim top spot in ATP rankings

Italy's Jannik Sinner turned on the style to end Carlos Alcaraz's hopes of the "Sunshine Double" and his reign as world number one, triumphing 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-2 in their Miami Open semi-final on Friday. Sinner will meet Russian Daniil Medvedev in Sunday's final while Alcaraz will lose his number one ranking to Novak Djokovic. Medvedev reached his fifth straight ATP Tour final with a 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-3 win over fellow Russian Karen Khachanov.

The disappointment for the 19-year-old Alcaraz, the defending champion in Miami and coming off a title at Indian Wells, will be tinged with frustration after he struggled in the third set with leg cramps.

It had been an enthralling and entertaining power-hitting performance from both men in the first set, with an incredible 25-shot exchange in the seventh game, bring the crowd to their feet. The intense, high quality set was eventually won by the Spaniard after a tie-break, but an inspired Sinner fought back in the second. Sinner broke in the first game and although Alcaraz broke back to make it 2-2, the 21-year-old Italian sensed his moment was arriving and showed confidence in his powerful groundstrokes.

- Worried and confused -

The world number one was moving with difficulty and was broken on his first serve in the deciding set. Looking in discomfort, he crouched down on his baseline in between points and shot some worried and confused looks to his team in the stands. Sinner chose some more conservative strokes and although Alcaraz appeared to recover a little, the Italian ran out the winner in three hours. &nbsp;

Alcaraz said his problems had appeared during a bathroom break after the second set.

Sinner also said that he had suffered some cramping during the second set but recovered quickly.

"I knew that I had to go on and wait for the right moment," he said. "I feel ready to compete and I am happy to be in the final," he added.

Medvedev enters final

The 27-year-old Medvedev, playing against his boyhood friend, survived a second-set comeback but his trademark precision stroke play saw him through against the big-serving Khachanov in a high quality encounter. The contest saw a series of long rallies as Medvedev fended off Khachanov's thumping shots from the baseline and then pinned his opponent back on his service game.

Medvedev hit 13 aces and saved four of six break points as the match turned decisively in his favor when he broke Khachanov in the fourth game of the third set.

Medvedev won 82% (14 of 17) of his first-serve points in the final set and was relieved to have beaten a player who knows his game so well.

"In my opinion, it was a top match," Medvedev said. "In the first set when we lost our serves, it was just a good game from the returner. In the second set, I had one bad game and he won the set. I had one break point, I could have done better. He had a break point in the first game of the third set, I managed to play well. Miami Open: Jannik Sinner ends Carlos Alcaraz's dream run, sets up final date with Russian Daniil Medvedev

World number one Carlos Alcaraz and in-form Russian Daniil Medvedev booked their places in the Miami Open semi-finals with convincing victories over American opponents at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday. Alcaraz crushed ninth-seed Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-2, while Medvedev ended qualifier Christopher Eubanks' impressive run with a 6-3, 7-5 victory in their quarter-final.

Alcaraz needed just 78 minutes to dismiss Fritz with the Spaniard yet again dominating with his big serve and attacking the American from the outset. The powerful Alcaraz set the tone by breaking Fritz's first service game and he did the same again at the start of the second set, winning the game to love. The 19-year-old broke again to go 5-2 up and wrapped up the win without losing a point in the final game.

He will be up against Italian tenth-seed Jannik Sinner next as he seeks to complete the 'Sunshine Double' following his triumph over Medvedev at Indian Wells.

The 26-year-old Eubanks was playing in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final after upsetting Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Gregoire Barrere and Croatia's 17th-ranked Borna Coric. The 6-foot-7 (2.01m), big-serving Eubanks showed no signs of nerves, holding his first two serves, but he was unable to take advantage of five break-points in a thrilling fourth game.

A half hour rain-break appeared to disrupt Eubanks' momentum, however, and he was broken on his first service game after the resumption of play, going long and allowing Medvedev to take a 4-3 lead. The Russian, who after the break noticeably stepped further into the second serve, broke again to take the first set, but Eubanks was not about to roll over against the world number five.

In the sixth game of the second set, Medvedev won a great rally at the net to go 4-2 up but Eubanks again showed his character to break back and keep his hopes alive.

Elena Rybakina cruises into Miami Open final

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina reached the final of the Miami Open by beating American world number three Jessica Pegula 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday. Kazakhstan’s Rybakina is on course to claim the 'Sunshine Double' after winning in Indian Wells earlier this month.

The 23-year-old, ranked seventh in the world, will face the winner of Friday's semi-final between Petra Kvitova and Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

In a rain-disrupted match, neither player was able to settle into their serve with 11 breaks in total throughout the two sets. Pegula had been 4-2 up in the second set but after she was broken again, the contest turned decisively in Rybakina's direction when the American, on her serve, found the net on a return to go 5-4 down to the Moscow-born Rybakina.

Rybakina then held her serve with ease to secure back-to-back WTA 1000 finals and she said the unwelcome prospect of a third set had pushed her to take a more positive approach.

"I think that I started being a bit more aggressive because I knew that if it's going to go to the third set, it's going to be much more difficult, so I maybe risked a bit more in the end of the second set," she said, noting how tough it has been to go all the way in back-to-back tournaments.

"It's really difficult because of different conditions and these two weeks by the matches, you will see that it's been much more difficult for me here than in Indian Wells, but for the&nbsp; sunshine double, I am going to give it my best and hopefully I can make it," she added.

"I feel at home here. It is easy to play here in Miami with all the energy I receive every day."

"I couldn't play aggressively in my first two matches because my opponents were hitting every ball as hard as they could. (Rune) still crushes the ball but it was nice to feel I had some more time," Fritz said.&nbsp;

"The first two rounds, it was impossible to play my game, I just had to make balls. Today when I got the chance to be aggressive I was and I just wanted to serve well and try not to give him many free points."

Italian Jannick Sinner&nbsp;also advanced to the last eight without dropping a set and he was in firm control from the outset against Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev, winning&nbsp;6-2, 6-4.

Miami Open: Carlos Alcaraz enters quarter-finals, Tsitsipas crashes out

World number one Carlos Alcaraz moved into the last 16 of the Miami Open after beating Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 6-0, 7-6 (7/5) on Sunday as he remains on track for tennis' "Sunshine Double."

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who beat Daniil Medvedev to win the title in Indian Wells last week, looked in top condition as he outclassed Lajovic in the first set to keep his Miami title defence on track.

But the Serb was able to provide some tension towards the end of the second set, breaking to make it 5-5 with Alcaraz paying the price for a sloppy return.

Alcaraz was 6-2 up in the tie-break, but Lajovic won the next three points before the Spaniard's big back-hand winner settled the 91-minute contest.

"Everything was under control or I thought it was but, you know, in the match it's never easy," Alcaraz said.

"The nerves came out. I made a few mistakes that I hadn't done during the whole match. So it was tough to win the match. But I'm really happy with the level that I'm playing and it was a good match," he added.

Alcaraz will face Tommy Paul in the last 16 and the American goes into that game on the back of a 12-match winning streak against Spanish players including wins over Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal last year.

"I lost the first and only match that I played against Tommy. I know that he's a really talented and really tough player, so I have to play at my best and let's see what's going to happen," said Alcaraz.

With Nadal injured and Novak Djokovic barred from entering the US due to his refusal to take a COVID vaccine, Alcaraz is the face of this tournament and the crowd was noticeably bigger on the Hard Rock Stadium court for his game.

In the front row of the crowd was Miami Heat NBA star Jimmy Butler who embraced Alcaraz after the match.

Alcaraz said that dealing with his magnified profile is something he has yet to get fully used to.

"I feel great seeing celebrities watching my matches. It's unbelievable. I feel a little bit nervous when I see a person like Jimmy and the celebrities when I was playing in the US Open," he said.

"In a certain way, I can't believe that these people enjoy watching my matches. For me, it's crazy," he said.

<h2>Straight sets for Fritz</h2>

American Taylor Fritz&nbsp;rolled into the fourth round for the third consecutive year after clinching a 6-4, 6-4 win against Canada's&nbsp;Denis Shapovalov.

In a hard-hitting encounter, with both players blasting from the baseline, Fritz did not face a break point during the 81-minute encounter.

"I felt like I just protected my serve well. I didn't give him a lot of free points, served well, so I didn't face any break points," said Fritz.

"I was just able to capitalize on the one break that I got in both sets. That really, that was the difference," he said.

Fritz has already won one tournament in Florida this year, taking the title last month at Delray Beach.

In the fourth round, the American will be up against 19-year-old Holger Rune in who beat Argentine Daniel Schwartzman 6-4, 6-2.

As always at Miami, there is a large contingent of Argentine tennis fans and they were vocal in their support for Schwartzman.

But Dane Rune converted all four break points he earned in the hot afternoon sun.

“My focus was really to step in every time I could and play my game. I think there were a few rallies where I didn’t, but 95 per cent of the match was played on my terms, which was what I wanted," he said.

Fourth-seed Daniil Medvedev moved into the fourth round after his scheduled third round opponent Alex Molcan of Slovakia withdraw from Monday's clash with a right hip injury.

Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz moves into last 16 at Miami Open

World number one Carlos Alcaraz made an emphatic start to his Miami Open title defence, defeating Argentina's Facundo Bagnis 6-0, 6-2 on Friday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, the youngest ever player to top the rankings, is looking to complete the "Sunshine Double" after beating Daniil Medvedev in last week's Indian Wells final.

Alcaraz made a blistering start winning the first 11 points of the match, with the 33-year-old Bagnis having no answer at all to the teenager's powerful serve.

There was a loud cheer from the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium when Bagnis, who has never beaten a top 20 ranked player, held serve in the second set and then broke Alcaraz to make it 2-2.

But that was a brief moment of respite for Bagnis rather than any shift in momentum and Alcaraz had no further problems as he blasted his way to victory in just 65 minutes.

"To start a new tournament is never easy, different conditions. I have to be ready to get used to these new conditions, but I was really focused on the match from the beginning, and I’m happy with the way that I played," said the Spaniard.

Alcaraz needs to win here to maintain his top spot in the rankings, will face either Serbian Dusan Lajovic or American Maxime Cressy in the third round.

After his win in Miami last year, Alcaraz boldly predicted he was ready to win a Grand Slam and he returns now having achieved that goal and, he concedes, as a different man.

"I grew up a lot since last year. It has been a great year for me as a player, as a person as well. I learned a lot of things, not only on court, also off the court, as well," he said.

His whirlwind year caught up with him physically - he had to miss January's Australian Open with a leg injury - &nbsp;and the Spaniard says he is now more careful about his physical condition.

"I have to take care about myself a little bit more off the court, taking care about going early to bed, to rest better, eat well, take care of myself off the court. That's the most important thing for me," he said.

<h2>Fritz advances</h2>

It was also a straightforward start to the tournament for America's top ranked player, world number 10 Taylor Fritz who saw off 21-year-old Californian Emilio Nava 6-4, 6-1.

Nava's ultra-attacking style had earned him an upset win over John Isner in the previous round and he hit some spectacular winners early against Fritz.

But Fritz kept his calm and with the first set under his belt, picked off Nava with ease in the second.

Fritz felt Nava, a promising talent, had made a common mistake of young arrivals on the tour.

"I think that he should just play his game more. In these type of matches I feel like he maybe felt like he had to play much higher than his capacity in this match," he said.

"Just the way he was just kind of going for winners off everything in the first set. It was working, but it's tough to sustain. That's something that I did as well when I was a kid," he added.

Germany's Alexander Zverev's postive return to the tour after his ankle ligament injury, which saw him reach the last 16 at Indian Wells, was cut short by a straight sets 6-0, 6-4, loss to Japanese wildcard Taro Daniel.

The 13th seed Zverev, who has type one diabetes, had to take an insulin shot during the match as New York-born Daniel picked up another impressive win after his victory over Matteo Berrettini at Indian Wells and win over world number four Casper Ruud at the Mexican Open.

Ruud defeated Belarus's Ilya Ivashka 6-2, 6-3, while Italy's Jannik Sinner also progressed to the third round with a &nbsp;6-4, 6-2 victory against Laslo Djere.

After reaching the final in his Miami debut in 2021 and reaching the quarter-finals last year, the 21-year-old Italian will be looking to go deep again.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz made an emphatic start to his Miami Open title defence, defeating Argentina's Facundo Bagnis 6-0, 6-2 on Friday. Also Read: WPL 2023: Mumbai Indians' Issy Wong takes maiden hat-trick of league against UP Warriroz - WATCH But that was a brief moment of respite for Bagnis rather than any shift in momentum and Alcaraz had no further problems as he blasted his way to victory in just 65 minutes. Tennis: Defending champ Carlos Alcaraz into third round of Miami Open

Spain's Carlos&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;swept past Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 and secure his return to number one in the world.

US Open champion&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;ended Medvedev's 19-match winning streak, denying him a fourth title in as many tournaments to ensure he will supplant Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic atop the rankings.

"It feels amazing to lift the trophy here, to recover the No. 1,"&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;said. "I would say this has been the perfect tournament."

Serbia's Djokovic, barred from entering the United States because he hasn't been vaccinated against Covid-19, sat out Indian Wells and will miss the Miami Open starting this week, where&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;is the defending champion.

Alcaraz, 19, who became the youngest world number one ever after his triumph at Flushing Meadows last year, claimed his third Masters 1000 title and joined compatriot Rafael Nadal as the only players to win at least three as a teenager. Nadal won six before turning 20.

He was unstoppable on Stadium Court, breaking through what he'd called the "wall" of Medvedev's formidable defenses.

Medvedev, coming off titles in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai, could find no answer as&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;fired winners from all over the court, defying the windy conditions.

"Daniil obviously didn't play at his best level, but I'm very happy for my performance and how I played this tournament."

He said the big change in him since a semi-final defeat to Nadal last year at Indian Wells was his comfort level on the game's biggest stages.

"I think my tennis didn't improve so much since last year. What I improve a lot is to not take the pressure, just to play relaxed. That, for me, is the most important thing.

"That's why I show a great level, because I feel like I have no pressure. I enjoy."

Medvedev certainly wasn't able to ratchet up the pressure on him.

A stinging backhand winner gave&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;an early break in the opening set as he raced to a 3-0 lead.

He gave himself a set point with a sharply angled forehand volley and sealed it with an unreturnable serve, then won the first 10 points of the second set on the way to a 4-0 lead.

He didn't face a break point as he polished it off in one hour and 11 minutes, a diving volley winner giving him match point that he converted with another service winner.

<h2>Not easy</h2>

"I expected a tougher match," he said. "Against him is always a tactic match, and I did perfect today. That's why it looks easy -- but it wasn't."

Alcaraz&nbsp;has returned to number one despite a late start to the year. Injury forced him to miss the Australian Open, where Djokovic claimed a record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam title.

Since launching his season in February&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;has won a title in Buenos Aires and reached the final in Rio de Janeiro.

But to stay at the top he'll have to successfully defend his Miami title over the course of the next two weeks.

Medvedev, a former world number one and US Open winner himself, was disappointed that he didn't play his best, but pleased to get past the fourth round at Indian Wells for the first time, despite twisting his ankle in a win over Alexander Zverev and cutting his thumb in another tumble against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

"Why didn't I play my best? I don't know. Maybe it was his ball. Maybe it was the wind, was pretty windy today, and for him it was easier to go through this wind, and that's normal.

"But the week was amazing," added Medvedev never a fan of the slow hard courts of Indian Wells.

"I had a pretty toxic relationship with the courts here," he said during the trophy ceremony as he reeled off a long list of those to thank.

"I would like to thank this court. I was giving a hard time to it, so it gave me a hard time also, rolled my ankle, but it gave me the chance to finish the tournament so thanks a lot to this court."

Carlos Alcaraz beats Daniil Medvedev to win Indian Wells trophy, displaces Djokovic to reclaim no. 1 ranking

Top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek raced into the third round of the Indian Wells WTA and ATP Masters 1000 without wasting a minute on Saturday. Spain's second-ranked Alcaraz, the US Open champion who can return to number one in the world with a third Masters 1000 crown, needed just one hour and 16 minutes to get past Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3, 6-3.

Women's number one Swiatek, winner of the French and US opens last year, was even more ruthlessly efficient in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over American Claire Liu.

Alcaraz lost just one point on his serve in the first set and did not face a break point in the match as he lined up a meeting with Tallon Griekspoor, a 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4) winner over Argentina's Guido Pella.

"Well, I surprised myself today with my serve," the effervescent 19-year-old said. "I serve really well in the first set and in the second set as well."

Early breaks in each set were too much for Kokkinakis to overcome in the face of Alcaraz's speed and power.

"All that I'm looking for in every match is to enjoy and to play relaxed," Alcaraz said. "I think that's the most important part of my game, to stay relaxed and go for it and not to think about the mistakes, the points, the rounds. Just live the moment, play the match, and go for it," he added.

Alcaraz was able to do just that as there was no sign of the right hamstring injury that forced him out of the ATP tournament in Acapulco prior to Indian Wells.

He had missed the Australian Open with similar trouble, but returned to win in Buenos Aires last month before falling in the final at Rio de Janeiro -- where he was hindered by the injury.

"It seems today that I move really well," Alcaraz said. "I think I'm ready and totally recovered from the injury."

Tennis: Novak Djokovic extends record stay as world no.1, Carlos Alcaraz remains in pursuit

After his triumph in the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic won his 22 Grand Slam title, levelling with Rafael Nadal. The two long-time rivals will lock horns once again during the forthcoming French Open as it will be a fight between the experienced duo to move a step ahead of the other.

Prior to the French Open, Djokovic hailed young sensation Carlos Alcaraz -- who is one spot below the Serbian in the ATP rankings (i.e. at No. 2 spot) -- but says he doesn't consider him as a rival. The world number one stated that Nadal will 'remain the biggest rival I ever had in my career'.

"Alcaraz is playing at a great level. I cannot call him my main rival. My main rival is still Nadal, you know, even though Alcaraz is obviously number 2 [in the world rankings]. He was number 1, he has won a Slam,” said Djokovic.

He further asserted, "Nadal has been the biggest rival, and he probably will remain the biggest rival I ever had in my career."

'Alcaraz&nbsp;is arguably the next biggest thing in our sport'

Djokovic went on to laud the the 19-year-old Alcaraz. The Spaniard has made heads turn in his short career so far, winning the US Open 2022 along with reaching the quarters in French Open and fourth-round in Wimbledon last year. Hence, the Serbian said,&nbsp;"It's amazing that he is able to find the top level right away. That is actually a characteristic of a mature player. He doesn't have so much experience, but he is showing maturity very early on, and with the way he handles himself on and off the court."

Nonetheless, the No. 1 ranked player still believes someone like Alcaraz&nbsp;cannot be termed as his rival as he is doing great things but since the last year and a half only. "He is a great guy and has a very good team of people around him. He deserves all his success and he is, I think, bringing some new, fresh energy into tennis, you know. He is a very dynamic player and personality and is very liked all around the world. So he deserves everything. He is arguably the next biggest thing in our sport or he is already there. 'Alcaraz is arguably the next biggest thing in our sport' Djokovic went on to laud the the 19-year-old Alcaraz. The Spaniard has made heads turn in his short career so far, winning the US Open 2022 along with reaching the quarters in French Open and fourth-round in Wimbledon last year. Hence, the Serbian said, "It's amazing that he is able to find the top level right away. That is actually a characteristic of a mature player. He doesn't have so much experience, but he is showing maturity very early on, and with the way he handles himself on and off the court." Nonetheless, the No. 1 ranked player still believes someone like Alcaraz cannot be termed as his rival as he is doing great things but since the last year and a half only. "He is a great guy and has a very good team of people around him. He deserves all his success and he is, I think, bringing some new, fresh energy into tennis, you know. Tennis: Novak Djokovic equals Steffi Graf's record for most weeks as top-ranked player

Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a dream return to action after more than three months out due to abdominal and hamstring injuries as the world number two claimed the Argentina Open title on Sunday by beating Cameron Norrie 6-3 7-5 in the final. The top seed won the U.S. Open in September and became the youngest player to top the world rankings at 19 years old, but suffered an abdominal issue at the Paris Masters in November before pulling out of the Australian Open with a leg injury.

Having been leapfrogged by Melbourne winner Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz began his quest to regain the top spot with his debut appearance at Buenos Aires where he lost only one set in his four matches.

"It's been a great week for me, a dream week after a long time with no competition. Coming to Buenos Aires and showing the level I showed is amazing and really special. It has been an emotional week too," Alcaraz said.

The Spaniard's seventh ATP title and first since Flushing Meadows last year was never in doubt despite a minor blip in the second set against Norrie where he dropped his serve.

"I had the chance to win the match at 5-3 and he broke my serve easily," Alcaraz said. "But I knew I had to be calm and try to wait for my moment and it came at 6-5. It was a great match."

Alcaraz, who moved to within 590 points of Djokovic in the rankings, said he was happy with his level.

"I felt very comfortable playing the final," Alcaraz said. "I knew it was going to be really difficult. I started really focused on what I had to do at the beginning, my game, my level. This is the level that I have to play in finals."

Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Australian Open 2023 without stepping foot on the court. The 27-year-old announced his decision on the eve of his opening match and said he was 'devastated' to have missed out on his home grand slam. “It’s just bad timing. That’s life, you know. Injuries are part of sport...I’m not doubting that I’ll be back to my full strength. Devastated obviously," said Kyrgios in a hastily arranged press conference. "It’s my home tournament and going into this event as one of the favourites, it’s brutal.” The Australian had been struggling with an ankle issue, leading into the event. Kyrgios' physio Will Maher informed the media that a cyst had formed as a result of a small tear in his lateral meniscus. The divisive Australian participated in a charity match alongside Novak Djokovic last Friday. Maher said the match was used to see if Kyrgios could compete at the Grand Slam. However, he “didn’t pull up great” from Friday’s match. The defending champion in the doubles is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove the cyst. The rehabilitation process may take five-six weeks and Kyrgios might only be available for Indian Wells which starts in March. After years of underachieving, Kyrgios had a terrific run of form in the second half of 2022, winning the title in Washington and reaching his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon and the US Open quarter-finals. In the Australian Open 2022, Kyrgios partnered up with his countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis and went the distance by winning the title at Melbourne Park. Kyrgios has become the latest high-profile name to have withdrawn from the Australian Open. Previously, it was Japanese Naomi Osaka who withdrew from the tournament due to her pregnancy.
