<p>CSIS described the method used by PRCIS to recruit Canadians. In its Twitter thread, CSIS said that Chinese agents zero in on people searching for jobs in strategic sectors. They then contact them on LinkedIn. The agents pose as HR managers or recruiters.</p>

<p>The conversation soon moves to other platforms like WeChat or WhatsApp. Job seekers are asked to write reports containing sensitive information for their 'clients' or 'consultants'.</p>

<p>CSIS said that these clients and consultants are often Chinese intelligence officers.</p>

<p>Those who are recruited for spying are paid for the reports they write for the Chinese agents.</p>

<p>“Intelligence officers may or may not reveal their true affiliation in order to preserve targets’ plausible deniability,” the agency said.</p>

<p>The warning from the Canadian intelligence has come just one week after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada's national police force, said that there were "100 plus" ongoing investigations into suspicions of foreign interference. The police chief, however, stopped short of saying how many were connected to China.</p>

<p>The leaked intelligence reports on how, allegedly, China attempted to influence Canadian elections have rocked the country. The allegations say that Chinese intervention was in favour of the ruling Liberal Party. Reports of now-closed Chinese 'police stations' in Canada have raised questions as well.</p>

Canada's wildfires: US to face air quality concerns throughout summer?

<p>The Canadian enforcement authorities have denied any “hate crime” involved in the display of tableau celebrating the assassination of India’s former prime minister&nbsp;Indira Gandhi at a parade in Canada’s Brampton city.</p>

<p>“Police have looked at the video and it’s their determination it does not constitute a hate crime,” Brampton mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement on Saturday.</p>

<p>The mayor further said that Canadians are “guaranteed freedom of thought, belief and expression” under Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.</p>

<p>“Any decision to change Section 2 would be at the federal level. Police enforce laws. They don’t write them,” the statement added.</p>

<p>So far, there has been no official reaction from Canada’s federal government, except the one issued by Canada’s High Commissioner to India Cameron McKay on June 5 condemning the incident.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities,” he had tweeted.</p>

<h2><strong>What really happened?</strong></h2>

<p>The incident came to light after a video went viral on Twitter, in which a user wrote, "A float depicting the murder of the late Indian PM by her Sikh bodyguards being part of about a 5 KM long parade in the city of Brampton on June 4th. Jody Thomas may reflect on it!"</p>

<p>The video purportedly showed Gandhi in a blood-stained white saree while turban-clad men point guns at her. A poster on the tableau read: “Revenge for attack on Shri Darbar Sahib”.</p>

<p>However, opposition parties accused that he was too close to Trudeau. They demanded an independent public inquiry instead.</p>

<p>"When I undertook the task of independent special rapporteur on foreign interference, my objective was to help build trust in our democratic institutions," Johnston said in his resignation letter.</p>

<p>"I have concluded that given the highly partisan atmosphere around my appointment and work, my leadership has had the opposite effect."</p>

<h2><strong>The alleged Chinese interference</strong></h2>

<p>The minority government led by Trudeau had faced pressure to explain the alleged Chinese interference in Canada's elections. The claims were first reported by the local media. These reports cited leaked intellilgence documents and unnamed sources who said that China sought to influence or subvert the elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reported accusations included secret campaign donations and Chinese operatives working for Canadian candidates or lawmakers in an attempt to influence policy.</p>

<p>Following Johnston's appointment, three opposition legislators said Canada's spy agency told them they had been the target of Chinese interference.</p>

<p>Recently, it had emerged that China had sought to intimidate a Canadian lawmaker and his relatives in Hong Kong because of his criticism of China.</p>

<p>Last month, Ottawa expelled a Chinese diplomat implicated in the scheme.</p>

<h2><strong>China denies</strong></h2>

<p>China had called the accusations 'groundless' and had reacted by expelling a Canadian diplomat. It had warned Canada that aligning with USA's policy on China risked its relation with its second-largest trading partner.</p>

<p>In his preliminary findings, Johnston noted common foreign interference techniques included cyberattacks, online influence campaigns, disinformation and "the exploitation of human relationships."</p>

<p>Johnston said his resignation would be effective no later than the end of June.</p>

<p>China-Canada relations turned icy in late 2018 when Canadian police detained a Chinese telecommunications executive. Shortly afterwards, Beijing arrested two Canadians on spying charges.</p>

<p>All three were freed in 2021.</p>

<p>The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Thursday (June 8)said it was&nbsp; delaying flights to New York City-area and Philadelphia airports owing to decreased visibility due to smoke drifting from Canada wildfires. The agency said that flights into New York City's LaGuardia Airport were being delayed with an average of 54 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Flights at nearby Newark Liberty Airport were also getting delayed due to visibility issues. The FAA has warned that it may also need to decide to delay traffic into Washington and Charlotte, North Carolina. Earlier, the FAA had temporarily halted flights to LaGuardia and Philadelphia from the US northeast, Ohio and Mid-Atlantic.</p>

<p>Wildfires are common in Canada each year but this time the situation is being described as 'unprecedented'. There are wildfires in almost every Canadian province.</p>

<p>"The distribution of fires from coast to coast this year is unusual," said Michael Norton, an official with Canada's Natural Resources ministry as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At this time of year, fires usually occur only on one side of the country at a time, most often in the West."</p>

<p>Millions of hectares of land have been scorched due to the wildfires till now and major Canadian cities are threatened leading to evacuation of thousands of residents.</p>

<p>To tackle wildfires this time, military's firefighting capabilities are being expanded. They have an uphill battle ahead of them.</p>

<p>"When a big fire is burning, it is impossible for the firefighters to make a direct attack," explains Marc-Andre Parisien, a specialist in fire risk management. He was quoted by AFP.</p>

<p>And then "sending water bombers to douse flames 30 metres high is like spitting on a campfire, it is ineffective," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One solution is to use controlled burns to halt advancing blazes, but with big fires, "only a big rain" will extinguish them.</p>
