After winning only by a slender margin in a leadership review, Alberta premier Jason Kenney on Wednesday (May 18) resigned shocking many who expected him to say in power despite his growing unpopularity.

Kenny, the premier of Canada’s most oil-producing province, earned 51.4 per cent of party members' votes. He was elected to power in Alberta in 2019, and then saw his popularity plummet during the pandemic. He had also faced opposition from his own party—United Conservative Party.

The reason being cited for his unpopularity was his approach towards tackling the virus, reported Reuters.

He told his party members in Calgary, “While 51 per cent of the vote passes the constitutional threshold of a majority, it clearly is not adequate support to continue on as leader and that is why tonight, I've informed the president of the party of my intention to step down as leader of the United Conservative Party.”

Kenny requested the leadership review to avert a caucus mutiny after months of harsh criticism of his management of the covid outbreak and his uncompromising leadership style. Canada has decided to ban Huawei, and ZTE 5G equipment as it joins the five eyes intelligence-sharing network. Canada says the gear ban is to protect national security.

Canada to ban Huawei, ZTE 5G equipment as it joins five eyes intelligence-sharing network

Beijing hit out at Canada for banning telecoms giants Huawei and ZTE from Canadian 5G networks on Friday, calling Ottawa's concerns for security risks "groundless" and warning of retribution.

Canada's long-awaited measure on Thursday follows the United States and other key allies, and comes on the heels of a diplomatic row between Ottawa and Beijing over the detention of a senior Huawei executive on a US warrant, which has now been resolved.

The United States has warned of the security implications of giving Chinese tech companies access to telecommunications infrastructure that could be used for state espionage.

Both Huawei and Beijing have rejected the allegations.

"China is firmly opposed to this and will conduct a comprehensive and serious assessment," foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters in response to the 5G block.

"The Canadian side has excluded these Chinese companies from the Canadian market under the pretext of groundless security risks and without any solid evidence."

He added that Beijing would "take all necessary measures" to protect Chinese companies.

"This move runs counter to market economy principles and free trade rules," he said, accusing the Canadian government of "seriously damaging the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies."

Canada had been reviewing the 5G technology and network access for several years, repeatedly delaying a decision that was first expected in 2019.

It remained silent on the telecoms issue after China jailed two Canadians -- diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor -- in what observers believed was in retaliation for the arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wangzhou in Vancouver in December 2018 at the request of the United States.

All three were released in September 2021 after Meng reached a deal with US prosecutors on the fraud charges, ending her extradition fight.

But Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne made the 5G announcement on Thursday, citing the "intention to prohibit the inclusion of Huawei and ZTE products and services in Canada's telecommunication systems."

Champagne said Canadian telecommunications companies "will not be permitted to include in their networks products or services that put our national security at risk."

"Providers who already have this equipment installed will be required to cease its use and remove it," he said.

Hostile actors

Huawei already supplies some Canadian telecommunications firms with 4G equipment.

Most, if not all, had held off using Huawei in their fifth-generation (5G) wirelesss networks that deliver speedier online connections with greater data capacity. Others have looked to other suppliers while Ottawa hemmed and hawed.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino warned Thursday of "many hostile actors who are ready to exploit vulnerabilities" in telecom networks.

The United States, Australia, Britain, New Zealand, Japan and Sweden have already blocked or restricted the use of Huawei technology in their 5G networks.

The US government considers Huawei a potential security threat due to the background of its founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese army engineer who is Meng's father.

The concern escalated as Huawei rose to become the world leader in telecoms networking equipment and one of the top smartphone manufacturers.

Beijing also passed a law in 2017 obliging Chinese companies to assist the government in matters of national security.

The decision could prove to be "a major expense for Canada," Kendra Schaefer, tech policy researcher at consultancy Trivium China, told AFP.

"Not only have local telecom providers already invested... in Huawei equipment, but additionally they are going to go back and have to rip out everything they've already installed," she added.

Tit-for-tat move? Canada looks to ban Russian President Vladimir Putin, others from entering nation

In Canada, self-induced extreme intoxication or drinking too much alcohol to the point that you lose control is a valid defence for violent crimes like homicide and sexual assault.

The Supreme Court of Canada, on Friday, ruled that a 1995 law that prohibits this defence was unconstitutional and in violation of the country's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Because of this defendants can now claim that their heinous actions were involuntary and a result of consuming alcohol or drugs.

This defence will make it so that they can't be held criminally liable for their actions. When a person uses an extreme intoxication or 'non-mental disorder automatism' defence, they claim they are not in their senses or had grossly impaired consciousness due to the drugs or alcohol in their systems.

The issue of this law's constitutionality came to light in connection with three separate cases.

As part of the Friday ruling, the court upheld the acquittal in two of the cases and said a trial can be ordered in the third one.

One of the cases involved a man named David Sullivan, who in December 2013 attempted suicide by consuming a prescription drug that has the side effect of psychosis. In the psychotic state, he then stabbed his mother, thinking she was an alien.

He was convicted of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. An appeal court found the sentence unfair and said that the 1995 law was unconstitutional, acquitting David.

This acquittal has now been upheld.

As per the court, intoxication that does not cause automatism' is not a defence for violent crimes like murder or sexual assault.

While the courts have for years been divided on the issue, women advocacy groups have long supported the 1995 law. According to them, this law is essential for preventing violence against women and children.

In Canada, as per government data, women account for four out of five victims of abuse, or violence at the hands of a partner. Additionally, women are five times more likely to experience sexual assault.

In the psychotic state, he then stabbed his mother, thinking she was an alien. He was convicted of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. An appeal court found the sentence unfair and said that the 1995 law was unconstitutional, acquitting David. This acquittal has now been upheld. While the courts have for years been divided on the issue, women advocacy groups have long supported the 1995 law. According to them, this law is essential for preventing violence against women and children. In Canada, as per government data, women account for four out of five victims of abuse, or violence at the hands of a partner. On Monday, after colliding with a tree, a drone transporting guns into Canada from the United States was intercepted.

Despite the fact that the drone crashed into a nearby tree, police in Canada were able to catch the pilot when the drone crossed the border into the United States carrying nearly a dozen guns.

Locals in the town of Port Lambton, northeast of Detroit, reported seeing an unknown individual manoeuvring a commercial drone around the neighbourhood, prompting officers from the Southern Ontario Provincial Police to respond.

According to Christine Ackwood of CTV News, our next-door neighbour had observed someone enter our yard in the middle of the night using a remote control. "He couldn't figure out what was going on at all."

However, the drone operator lost control of the aircraft, sending it careening into a nearby tree before leaving in a waiting vehicle with his passengers.

A bucket truck was used to recover the drone, which had secured a plastic shopping bag with metal carabiners and electrical tape, according to authorities.

Inside the house, officers discovered 11 handguns, the majority of which were illegal firearms in Canada. According to the police department, a photograph provided by them purports to show that the serial digits of a black pistol have been sanded out.

According to the investigation, the drone flew east from the St. Clair River in Michigan, which marks the Canadian-US border. Police, on the other hand, are still perplexed as to who was in charge of the unlawful drone delivery.

Many of the firearms used in criminal activity in Canada are brought into the country illegally from the United States. Smugglers have employed a variety of methods to avoid detection, including cargo trucks, passenger cars, and airplanes.

Canada announced Thursday a lifting of restrictions on blood donations by gay and bisexual men that dates back to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.

Instead, donors will be screened for high-risk sexual behaviours, regardless of gender or sexuality.

"Under the new screening approach, Canadian Blood Services will introduce a sexual behaviour-based donor-screening questionnaire that will apply to all donors of blood and plasma," the health department said in a statement.

The policy change to be implemented by September marks "a significant milestone toward a more inclusive blood donation system," it said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it "good news for all Canadians," adding at a news conference: "Our blood supply will continue to be safe and we're doing away with a discriminatory blanket ban."

The police in Toronto claimed to have arrested a man suspected of killing 21-year-old Indian student Kartik Vasudev near the Sherbourne subway station last week.

The killer has been identified as 39-year-old Richard Jonathan Edwin, who is charged in another murder case that took place just two days after Vasudev was shot dead

According to police, Edwin’s second victim was Elijah Eleazar Mahepath (35), who was walking westbound on the north side of Dundas Street East near George Street.

Edwin was arrested Sunday evening with a cache of loaded guns at his disposal, police said.

Briefing the reporters on Tuesday, Toronto police chief James Ramer said both the attacks were random killings and completely “unprovoked”.

"Kartik was just outside the Sherbourne subway station last Thursday when he was approached by a stranger...Unprovoked, this man shot Kartik multiple times, killing him," Ramer told reporters.

“Any death is tragic, but these men were completely innocent, and their murders were absolutely random acts of violence," he added.

Police said that Edwin has no prior murder cases against him and was in “lawful” possession of these guns.

Ramer believes that had the suspect not been caught sooner, there could have been a string of random attacks across the city.

"When, I don't know, but he had an arsenal at home. Frankly, I believe this might have just been a first step," Ramer said.

The police have now launched a probe to find out about his background and if he is associated with any organisation.

Vasudev hailed from Ghaziabad city in Uttar Pradesh. He had moved to Canada in January to pursue higher studies, according to his family.

He was shot on Thursday evening at the Glen Road entrance to Sherbourne TTC station in St James Town. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

In western Canada, dozens of sea lions, who had entered an industrial salmon farm, seem to be refusing to leave even after gorging on fish for weeks.

The predators, who seem to have slipped into the farm located near Tofino in British Columbia, are not moving on even after several attempts.

The farm is owned by Cermaq, which has operations in Chile, Norway and Canada.

In late March, these predators evaded netting and electric fences during a “breach event” at the Rant Point farm, the aquaculture giant said.

The efforts carried out by the company to drive the sea lions away have garnered negative response. They seem to have used loud noises to scare them.

The exits are also available to the animals “should they choose to leave”, the company said.

After the first breach, several more sea lions have joined the heist.

The company looks to finish harvesting the fish by the third week of April, if anything is left by these predators.

After over two decades, Kyrgyzstan has taken full control of Kumtor Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in Central Asia.

The goldmine was at the heart of the battle between the Kyrgyzstan government and Canadian mining company Centerra Gold. The mine is the 2nd highest in the world, behind Peru's Yanacocha mines.

President Sadyr Japarov, in an address to the nation earlier this month, said, "We have just signed an agreement with Centerra to resolve this dispute...Kumtor is now owned completely by Kyrgyzstan.”

The mine will now come under the direct control of Kyrgystan’s state-owned Kyrgyzaltyn after an out off-court settlement with Centerra.

Now, with full control of the mine, the Central Asian Country is expected to get $53 million even as the Canadian company ends all litigation against Kyrgyzaltyn in the United States, Sweden and Canada.

The mine is valued at US $3 billion. Over the next 10 years, according to Kyrgyz estimates, the mines can produce 160-200 tons of gold worth nearly at least US$5 billion dollars.

Highlighting the significance of the development, President Sadyr explained, "It is no exaggeration to say that today is a true turning point in the history of our country. Today, our people have taken responsibility for their fate into their own hands".

He added, "Our national assets are now exactly where they should be – in our own hands. This proves that we are on the path of sustainable development and growth."

Notably, the Kyrgyz foreign ministry had invited foreign envoys to visit the mines last year. These included envoys of India, UK, representatives from the embassies of Azerbaijan and delegates from the United Nations Resident Coordinator, UN FAO, UNDP.

The visit took place a month after Kyrgyzstan had taken over the mine from Canada's Centerra.

The Kumtor gold deposit is located at the Tien Shan Metallogenic Belt, also known as the Asian Gold belt that stretches from Uzbekistan to China's Xinjiang.

Infamous ‘maple syrup heist’ thief has a new challenge now. Richard Vallières, who was the mastermind behind the crime, has to pay victims C$9m (US$7m) or serve six more years in jail.

Wondering what it is all about? Well, a man in Canada stole the maple syrup reserve in Quebec province and then sold the illicit product.

Vallières could not succeed for long as the police got the tip, and he and his accomplices landed in jail. His plan to make millions of dollars went awry.

In 2011, a group of thieves stole syrup from thousands of white metal barrels in warehouses rented by the Federation of Maple Syrup Producers.

The thieves knew barrels were inspected only once a year in the strategic reserve. So, they replaced the syrup with water and transported it to the province of New Brunswick. Syrup was packaged and sold to different buyers.

In 2012, an inspector noticed that some barrels were empty while others were lighter than usual. On investigation, the Federation realised that 9,571 barrels, worth nearly C$18m, were stolen.

In police raids, 16 people were held, and Vallières was identified as the group’s leader.

He was found guilty of fraud, trafficking and theft and sentenced to eight years in prison. The criminal was also fined C$9.4m, the value of the syrup sold.

Vallières was given 10 years to pay the amount or face a six-year prison term.

In an appeal, the amount was reduced to only C$1 million as Vallières claimed the amount had been the profit on his theft. But on Thursday, Canada’s top court restored the original fine.

Pope Francis apologised Friday for abuse committed at church-run residential schools in Canada, telling Indigenous delegations at the Vatican it caused him "pain and shame".

"I ask for God's forgiveness for the deplorable conduct of these members of the Catholic Church," he said, following meetings this week with survivors from the First Nations, Metis and Inuit aboriginal groups.

After hearing "stories of suffering, deprivation, discriminatory treatment and various forms of abuse," Francis said he joined the Canadian bishops "in asking you for forgiveness".

The pontiff, 85, said he hoped to travel to Canada for the country's St Anne's Feast Day on July 26.

"This year, I hope to be with you on those days," he said.

Francis heard first-hand this week of centuries of abuse committed at the schools and the delegations had pressed him for an apology for a scandal that rocked the Catholic Church.

Some 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children were enrolled from the late 1800s to the 1990s in 139 residential schools across Canada, as part of a government policy of forced assimilation.

They spent months or years isolated from their families, language and culture, and many were physically and sexually abused by headmasters and teachers.

Battling Costa Rica edged 10-man Canada 1-0 on Thursday to deny the North Americans their first chance to clinch a spot in the 2022 World Cup finals.

Canada arrived in San Jose unbeaten in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying and looking to secure a berth in their first World Cup finals since 1986.

In little more than a half-hour, though, they found themselves down 10 men and things went from bad to worse when Celso Borges netted a first-half stoppage-time header that proved the only goal of the game.

Despite the loss, Canada sit top of the group standings on 25 points, three points clear of Mexico and the United States who battled to 0-0 draw at Azteca Stadium. With the win, Costa Rica moved into fourth on 19 points, still in the hunt for automatic qualification.

Despite their group rivals gaining ground, Herdman was confident Canada would advance.

"We'll get to Qatar."

They'll hope for a better start than in San Jose, where they were reduced to 10 men in the 34th minute when Mark-Anthony Kaye picked up a second yellow card.
