Pope Francis said that he needs to cut down his pace of travel and may even quit as he returned from a six-day trip, calling the decades-long abuse of Indigenous youngsters in Canada "genocide." The 85-year-old pope extended a historic apology to the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people for what he called the "evil" carried out at Catholic-run residential schools during his "penitential pilgrimage" across Canada this week.

The leader of the 1.3 billion Catholics in the world described the treatment of children who were uprooted from their homes and cultures in order to attend state schools as "genocide" in a statement to the media upon his return home. As he explained to reporters the word "I did describe the genocide. And I asked for forgiveness for this process which was genocide&nbsp;".

He stated, "Taking away children, changing the culture, changing the mentality, changing the traditions, changing a race, let's put it that way, a whole culture." Although most Canadians, from western Alberta to Quebec and the far north, applauded Francis's historic apology, many survivors argued that much more needed to be done to promote peace.

The pope visited Canada for the 37th time since his election in 2013, although he acknowledged he would have to slow down because of knee issues that required him to spend a large portion of the trip in a wheelchair. Pope refers to abuse of indigenous people in Canada as 'genocide'

When Pope Francis arrived at Maskwacis, Alberta to mark the first day of “penitential pilgrimage” to Canada, the attention was not on the holy reverend, but on Si Pih Ko, a Cree woman from Manitoba province, who gave a powerful performance with her song.

The moment was poignant, as an indigenous woman was giving an emotional performance in Cree to the tune of Canada’s national anthem.

The Pope is in Canada to apologise to indigenous people for abuse in government schools run by the Roman Catholic church.

The visit comes in the backdrop of a 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission report becoming&nbsp;public which found that these residential schools forcibly separated indigenous children from their parents as part of an effort to convert them to Christianity and assimilate them into the wider Canadian culture.

A total of 150,000 children from Canada’s First Nations tribes were placed in 139 schools run under government contract — most by the Catholic Church — over a 150-year period.

The report said that these schools committed “cultural genocide” and were designed “not to educate” the Indigenous children, “but primarily to break their link to their culture and identity”.&nbsp;

Hence on Monday, when the Pope arrived in Maskwacis, Alberta, she couldn’t control her emotions.

But what ticked her off was the fact that Pope donned a gifted feathered headdress without first removing his skullcap—something she saw as disrespectful.

“He didn’t remove his law before allowing our law to be placed on his head,” she told Reuters by phone from Winnipeg.

The 45-year-old ended her song with a statement on indigenous law, fist raised, before turning her back and walking away as Francis stood and watched.

“It felt good, being able to just sing it and speak it. And he could not destroy it in me,” she was quoted as saying.

She said that she was not at the event to hear the pope’s apology but “to have that opportunity to speak the law to him. No apology will ever make things right.”

She was aware that she would be “speaking the law” to the pope somehow, but added, “I didn’t think it would be right in the centre, hand up like that.”

Cree woman reveals why she ‘spoke the law' to Pope Francis

Pope Francis addressed a serious wound that many survivors wanted him to address during his apology trip to Canada on Thursday by pleading for forgiveness for sexual abuse at Catholic-run schools for indigenous children in Canada. The pope declared that the Church in Canada was on a new path after being "devastated by the evil perpetrated by some of its sons and daughters" during a nighttime vespers service with priests and nuns in the Quebec City cathedral.

As reported by Reuters, the pope said on the penultimate day of his six-day visit to Canada, "I think in particular of the sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable people, scandals that require firm action and an irreversible commitment. Together with you, I would like once more to ask forgiveness of all the victims. The pain and the shame we feel must become an occasion for conversion: never again!"

More than 150,000 indigenous children were taken away from their families and enrolled in schools between 1870 and 1996. It was the first time the pope had publicly addressed the issue of sexual abuse at schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada dubbed the practice "cultural genocide" because it resulted in the starvation or beating of the kids for speaking their native tongues, as well as the sexual assault of many of them.

The remarks follow the pope's historic apology on Monday at Maskwacis, the location of two former schools, in which he branded the Church's involvement in the schools and the forced cultural assimilation they tried a "deplorable evil" and "disastrous error." However, despite provoking strong feelings and being praised as the first step in reconciliation, that apology was also criticised by survivors for falling short of their expectations. One of their complaints was that sexual abuse wasn't mentioned.

Pope's apology not enough for abuses of Indigenous kids, Canadian govt says more needed to be done to atone

Pope Francis making the first visit to Canada by the head of the catholic church in two decades. He has offered an apology to the country's indigenous people. The Pontiff is engaged in what the Vatican calls a pilgrimage of penance over the church's role in the abuse of indigenous children in residential schools.

Gravitas: Pope arrives in Canada on 'pilgrimage of penance'

Pope Francis has taken off for a visit to Canada to apologise to indigenous survivors of abuse at residential schools run mostly by the catholic church. He will address a crowd of 15,000 people there.

Pope in Canada to apologise for abuse of indigenous children

Thousands of Indigenous persons are expected to converge Monday on the small Alberta prairie community of Maskwacis to hear a long-awaited apology from Pope Francis for generations of abuse and cultural suppression at Catholic residential schools across Canada.

Francis is scheduled to arrive in mid-morning at the site of the former Ermineskin Indian Residential School, now largely torn down. He will pause at the sites of the former school and nearby cemetery before speaking in a large open area to school survivors, their relatives and other supporters.

Francis arrived Sunday in Edmonton, where he was greeted by representatives of Canada's three main Indigenous groups—First Nations, Metis, and Inuit—along with political and church dignitaries. The pope spent the rest of the day resting at a seminary in the provincial capital.

The Canadian government has admitted that physical and sexual abuse were rampant in the state-funded Christian schools that operated from the 19th century to the 1970s. Some 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to attend in an effort to isolate them from the influence of their homes, Native languages, and cultures and assimilate them into Canada’s Christian society.

Francis’ six-day trip — which will also include other sites in Alberta, Quebec City and Iqaluit, Nunavut, in the far north — follows meetings he held in the spring at the Vatican with delegations from the First Nations, Metis and Inuit. Those meetings culminated with a historic April 1 apology for the "deplorable" abuses committed by some Catholic missionaries in residential schools.&nbsp;

Thousands of children died from disease, fire and other causes. The discoveries of hundreds of potential burial sites at former schools in the past year has drawn international attention to the legacy of the schools in Canada and their counterparts in the United States.

Francis is now following through on a commitment to make that apology on Canadian soil.

Maskwacis, about an hour south of Edmonton, is the hub of four Cree nations.

Event organisers said they would do everything possible to make sure survivors could attend the event. Many will travel from park-and-ride lots, and organisers acknowledge that many survivors are elderly and will require accessible vehicles, diabetic-friendly snacks, and other amenities.

The Catholics operated a majority of the Canadian schools, while various Protestant denominations operated others in cooperation with the government.

The Prime Minister, who last year voiced an apology for the "incredibly harmful government policy" in organising the residential school system, will also attend the Maskwacis event along with other government officials.

In Maskwacis, the former school where Francis is visiting has been replaced with a school system operated by the four local Cree nations. The curriculum affirms the Indigenous culture that was once suppressed.

Chief Greg Desjarlais of the Frog Lake First Nation in northern Alberta, a school survivor, said after the pope's arrival Sunday that there are "mixed emotions across this country" over his visit.

"I think today of the young people that didn’t make it home and are buried around residential schools," he told a news conference after the airport welcome ceremony. But he expressed optimism that the visit can begin to bring reconciliation.

"I do know when two people have apologized we feel better," he said. "But our people have been through a lot. ... Our people have been traumatized. Some of them didn’t make it home. Now I hope the world will see why our people are so hurt."

On Monday afternoon, Francis is scheduled to visit Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, a Catholic parish in Edmonton oriented toward Indigenous people and culture. The church, whose sanctuary was dedicated last week after being restored from a fire, incorporates Indigenous language and customs in liturgy.

"I never in my life thought I would see a pope here at Sacred Heart Church," said Fernie Marty, who holds the title of church elder. "And now we get that opportunity."

When Francis visits, the church will display the clothing, bread and other supplies it regularly provides to the needy, including many of Edmonton’s estimated urban Indigenous population of 75,000.

The visit will be an "encounter" that will help "for people to know what we are, who we are," said its pastor, the Rev. Jesu Susai.

Pope set for historic apology for school abuses in Canada

Pope takes off for visit to Canada to address a crowd of 15,000 people

Sunday marks the start of Pope Francis' historic six-day trip to Canada, where he will meet with Indigenous victims of abuse at Catholic Church-run residential schools and be expected to beg their pardon. The pontiff's description of it as a "penitential pilgrimage" is considered a crucial first step in confronting the widespread problem of clerical sexual abuse of children and years of cover-up. Indigenous communities in Canada have been waiting for it for a while. After arriving in Edmonton, Alberta's western province, Pope Francis will continue on to Quebec City and then Iqaluit, Canada's most northerly city. This will be the pope's 37th worldwide trip since assuming the role of pope.

He intends to restate his apologies, which he gave to Canadian delegates visiting the Vatican in April and which he then stated would "contribute to the journey of healing and reconciliation already undertaken," in the hope that it will be received positively. In unmarked graves near public schools run by the Catholic Church, hundreds of Indigenous children's corpses were found last year, forcing Canada to face its failed programme of forced assimilation. The Church's involvement in what a national truth and reconciliation committee has referred to as "cultural genocide" has also come under the spotlight.

From the late 1800s through the 1990s, about 150,000 First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children were enrolled in 139 residential schools, where they were separated from their family, language, and culture for months or years at a time. By headmasters and teachers, many people suffered from physical and sexual abuse. It's estimated that thousands of people perished from illness, hunger, or neglect. Since May 2021, more than 1,300 unmarked graves have been found near the locations of the defunct schools.

Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine got go-ahead for use among children aged six months to five years in Canada on Thursday (July 14). This has made 1.7 million children in Canada. Canada has total population of 38 million.

After a hiatus of 18 months, Canada has opened its scheme for permanent residency called 'Express Entry Scheme'. In simple terms, this scheme is an application management system used to select and zero in on candidates best suited to live and work in the North American country. Three separate programs concurrently run under this scheme viz. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Draws for FSWP and FSTP were put on hold in December 2020 while CEC was halted later in September 2021. How to apply? Before packing your bags for Canada to brave the frigid-cold temperatures, one must conduct a proper assessment and understand which scheme fits their eligibility criteria. The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank prospective candidates based on parameters such as age, education, language skills and work experience. While it is not necessary to have a job offer in hand to be eligible for the aforementioned schemes, it does help in gathering the minimum marks for CRS. Once you have figured out your CRS score and the scheme you want to apply to, create a profile and simply fill it out. If the marks are good enough and the documentation water-tight, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Read More: Canada to become world's first country to put health warnings on individual cigarettes Afterwards, fill out the form and upload the documents. Mind you, all of the documentation and submission of the application should be done within two months or to be specific, 60 days. After the Canadian telecoms operator suffered a major outage that paralyzed the country's banking and emergency services last week, Rogers Communications Inc will be crediting customers with the equivalent of five days service, it said on Tuesday. Rogers has come under pressure from Canadian government, customers and politicians over last Friday's unprecedented glitch that lasted 19 hours. On Tuesday, the telecoms regulator ordered Rogers to respond within ten days to its questions about the network outage that impacted millions of Canadians. "We know that we need to earn back their trust, and as a first step, we will be crediting our customers with the equivalent of five days service," Rogers said in a statement late on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.

Rogers, which has about 10 million wireless subscribers and 2.25 million retail internet subscribers, would have to credit between C$65 million to C$75 million to customers in the third quarter due to the outage, Scotiabank estimated in a note on Monday. The company reported a net income of C$1.56 billion in 2021. The glitch, which also disrupted flights, has cast doubt over Rogers' C$20 billion ($15.4 billion) takeover of Shaw Communications. That deal has been blocked by the antitrust agency saying it would lessen competition in the country, where customers pay among the highest telecom bills in the world.

Rogers needs to provide a detailed account as to "why" and "how" the outage happened, and what measures the company is putting in place to prevent future outages, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said in a statement. The CRTC has asked Rogers more than 50 pointed questions relating to the outage and the company has until July 22 to provide its responses, after which the CRTC will decide what additional measures need to be taken. Rogers to compensate for massive outage that impacted millions of Canadians

Canada's biggest telecom operator Rogers faces outrage. Network outage draws customer criticism. Emergency lines also took a hit due to the outage.

Canada: Network outage draws customer criticism as Rogers telecom faces network failure

Rogers&nbsp;Telecommunications said its&nbsp;network&nbsp;was beginning to recover late on Friday&nbsp;after&nbsp;a 19-hour service&nbsp;outage&nbsp;at one of Canada's biggest telecom operators shut banking, transport, and government access for&nbsp;millions, drawing outrage from customers and adding to criticism over its industry dominance.

Nearly every facet of life has been disrupted, with the&nbsp;outage&nbsp;affecting internet access, cell phone, and landline phone connections. Some callers could not reach emergency services via 911 calls, police across Canada said.

Canadians&nbsp;crowded into cafes and public libraries that still had internet access and hovered outside hotels to catch a signal. Canada's border services agency said the&nbsp;outage&nbsp;affected its mobile app for incoming travelers. Retailers&nbsp;cashless pay systems went down and&nbsp;banks reported issues with ATM services.

Rogers said in a statement&nbsp;that "our wireless services are starting to recover&nbsp;and workers are trying to get people back online as quickly as possible".

In a separate statement,&nbsp;Rogers&nbsp;President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Staffieri apologized for the&nbsp;outage, saying,&nbsp;"Today we let you down. We can and will do better".

He added that the company doesn't have a timeline on when the&nbsp;networks will be fully restored, "but we will continue to share information with our customers as we restore full services".

He said a credit would be applied to affected customers.

A spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Friday evening that the&nbsp;outage&nbsp;was not the result of a cyber attack.

Rogers' shares closed down 73 cents at C$61.54 ($47.53)&nbsp;on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The disruption also made transport and flight bookings more difficult at the height of the summer travel season.

So far, Transport Canada has not received reports of direct safety or security impacts to any flights, marine, or rail services as part of this&nbsp;outage, according to spokesperson Sau Liu.

The interruption was&nbsp;Rogers&nbsp;second in 15 months. It began around 4:30 am&nbsp;ET (0830 GMT) and knocked out a quarter of Canada's observable internet connectivity, said the NetBlocks monitoring group.

With about 10 million wireless subscribers and 2.25 million retail internet subscribers,&nbsp;Rogers&nbsp;is the top provider in Ontario, Canada's most populous province and home to its biggest city, Toronto.&nbsp;Rogers, BCE Inc, and Telus Corp control 90% of the market share in Canada.

Canadian Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne in a tweet called the situation "unacceptable" and said he was in communication with telecom CEOs, including those from&nbsp;Rogers, Bell, and Telus, to find a solution.

Canadian financial institutions and banks, including Toronto-Dominion Bank and Bank Of Montreal, said the&nbsp;outage&nbsp;disrupted services. Royal Bank of Canada said its ATMs and online banking services were affected.

A spokesperson for Vancouver International airport, among Canada's busiest, said travelers could not pay for parking, use terminal ATMs, or purchase items at airport retailers.

Air Canada, the country's largest airline, said its call center had been affected. Airlines in Canada, like those in Europe and the United States, have been experiencing high call volume amid flight cancellations and delays due to pandemic staffing shortages.

Pop star the Weeknd on Friday evening announced that his tour stop at the&nbsp;Rogers&nbsp;Centre stadium had been postponed due to service&nbsp;outages affecting venue operations.

"I'm crushed &amp; heartbroken. Been at the venue all day but it's out of our hands because of the&nbsp;Rogers&nbsp;outage", the singer wrote in a tweet.

<h2>COMPETITION</h2>

Critics said the&nbsp;outage&nbsp;demonstrated a need for more competition in telecom.

Earlier this year, Canada's competition bureau blocked&nbsp;Rogers' attempt to take over rival Shaw Communications in a C$20 billion deal, saying it would hamper competition in a country where telecom rates are some of the world's highest. The merger still awaits a final verdict.

"Today's&nbsp;outage&nbsp;illustrates the need for more independent competition that will drive more&nbsp;network&nbsp;investment so&nbsp;outages are far less likely", said Anthony Lacavera, managing director of Globalive, an investment firm that had bid for a wireless provider involved in the&nbsp;Rogers/Shaw deal.

On Friday, some government agencies canceled services&nbsp;after&nbsp;losing internet access, including Canada's passport offices and the telecoms regulator. The Canada Revenue Agency, the country's tax collection body, lost telephone service.

<h2>"CASH WILL BE KING"</h2>

Shops and restaurants in Toronto put "Cash Only" signs on their doors. Residents crowded into and around a nearby Starbucks coffee shop offering free Wi-Fi on an unaffected&nbsp;network.

"There are tons of people here with their laptops just working away ferociously, the same as they would at home because they've got no service at home", said Starbucks customer Ken Rosenstein.

In downtown Ottawa, Canada's capital, cafes including Tim Hortons were not accepting debit and credit cards and were turning away customers who did not have cash.

Michelle Wasylyshen, the spokeswoman for the Retail Council of Canada, said&nbsp;outages would vary from one retailer to the next and that&nbsp;"cash will most certainly be king at many stores today".

While the disruptions were widespread, several companies and transport points said their services were unaffected. The Port of Montreal reported no disruptions. The Calgary Airport Authority said it had "no&nbsp;major&nbsp;operational impacts".

In Canada, experts are calling out the use of powerful spyware to surveil citizens by the national police force. The Guardian reported that experts have warned the country is "asleep at the wheel" when it comes to the use&nbsp;of technology by police and other authorities. In the last week of June, for the first time, Canada's national police force described how it uses spyware to infiltrate mobile devices and collect data. Canada to deliver armored vehicles to Ukraine as Russia intensifies attack

An indicative study published in Canada has said that South Asian communities may have suffered more than others during the peak of COVID pandemic. The study, COVID CommUNITY – South Asian, has been published in Canadian Medical Association Journal Open.

The study said that South Asian communities in Greater Toronto area “suffered disproportionately from Covid-19 in the first year of the pandemic.” This is in accordance with&nbsp;Covid-19 Immunity Task Force (CITF). The CITF was established by the Canadian government in 2020.

The study has been carried out by researchers from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. The researchers found that Regional Municipality of Peel had emerged as hotspot before vaccines were rolled out in 2021. Peel accounts for 10 per cent of the population of Ontario but it accounted for about 23 per cent of COVID cases in the area. Peel has a large South Asian Canadian community. City of Brampton was a hotspot. Peel and Brampton have largest concentration on Indo-Canadians in Canada

“One third of participants in this study were essential workers through the pandemic, and 20% lived in multi-generational households. These factors, along with lower socioeconomic status, are the primary determinants of the higher seropositivity rates in Peel’s South Asian community, instead of any innately biological cause,” said Sonia Anand, professor of medicine and epidemiology at McMaster’s Department of Medicine as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Dr Catherine Hankins, Co-Chair of the CITF said, “Understanding the factors that rendered any community or region a hotspot for Covid-19 will not only help us manage future pandemics. An indicative study published in Canada has said that South Asian communities may have suffered more than others during the peak of COVID pandemic. The study, COVID CommUNITY – South Asian, has been published in Canadian Medical Association Journal Open. The study said that South Asian communities in Greater Toronto area “suffered disproportionately from Covid-19 in the first year of the pandemic.” This is in accordance with Covid-19 Immunity Task Force (CITF). Peel and Brampton have largest concentration on Indo-Canadians in Canada “One third of participants in this study were essential workers through the pandemic, and 20% lived in multi-generational households. The insights can also inform Canada’s ongoing efforts to achieve more equitable health outcomes on a population-wide basis.” You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Canada: South Asian communities may have suffered most during pandemic, says study

About 13.6 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine will be thrown away by Canada because it couldn’t find any takers for it either at home or abroad, as reported by AP. Canada signed a contract with AstraZeneca in 2020 to get 20 million doses of its vaccine, and 2.3 million Canadians received at least one dose of it, mostly between March and June 2021.

Following concerns in the spring of 2021 about rare but potentially fatal blood clots from AstraZeneca, Canada focused on using its ample supplies of the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. In July 2021, Canada promised to donate the rest of its procured supply, about 17.7 million doses. But in a statement Tuesday, Health Canada said that despite efforts to meet that pledge, 13.6 million doses have expired and will have to be thrown out.

As reported by AP, &nbsp;the statement said, "Due to limited demand for the vaccine and recipient country challenges with distribution and absorption, they were not accepted.″ In all, Canada donated 8.9 million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine — 4.8 million doses from its main supply and 4.1 million doses that it bought from the COVAX vaccine-sharing program.

About 85% of Canadians are considered fully vaccinated, compared with 61% of the world’s population, and just 16% of people living in the world’s poorest countries.

The British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, which has already produced a widely used coronavirus vaccine, recently carried out a phase-three trial for a treatment for people at risk of death from coronavirus, mostly on participants "at high risk of progression to severe Covid-19.

"Despite the success of vaccines, many individuals such as older adults, individuals with co-morbidities and those who are immunocompromised, remain at risk for poor outcomes from severe Covid-19," said trial lead Hugh Montgomery, professor of intensive care medicine at University College London.

Two suspects killed, 6 Policemen injured in shootout during bank robbery in western Canada

Two suspected bank robbers were killed in a shootout with police in western Canada on Tuesday (June 28). The encounter left six police officers injured. Local authorities said that a possible third suspect was still missing.

"This remains an ongoing police incident with the heavy police presence in the area," said Saanich police chief Dean Duthie at a press conference.

The armed suspects entered the bank around 1800 GMT. The bank is located in the city of Saanich which has a population of about 114,000 outside the British Columbia capital of Victoria, police said in a statement.

"Multiple officers responded to the scene and encountered the armed suspects who fired at police. Two suspects were shot by police and died at the scene," the statement said, adding that no bank employees or members of the public were physically injured.&nbsp;

"It's hard because we have members in the hospital right now suffering from serious injuries," Duthie said.

Three of the six police officers were undergoing a surgery as of late Tuesday. Other three police officers may be released from the hospital.

Earlier in the day, an evacuation order was issued for the buildings surrounding the bank because of a suspected explosive device found in the suspects' vehicle.

The day's events will "shake a lot of people," said Duthie, adding that federal police had been called to assist.

Canadian inflation jumped to 7.7 percent in May, marking the largest annual increase in prices for goods and services in almost four decades, the government statistical agency said Wednesday.

The figure topped even the most bullish forecasts, following a 6.8 percent rise in prices the previous month.&nbsp;

The price increases, Statistics Canada said in a statement, were "broad-based, pinching the pocketbooks of Canadians and in some cases&nbsp;affecting their ability to meet day-to-day expenses."

Desjardins analyst Royce Mendes reacted by saying the agency "really should add a warning label to these scorching hot inflation prints."

"We had expected stronger price increases than the consensus, but this is very surprising," he said in a research note, warning that a "jumbo-sized" interest rate hike by the Bank of Canada is now likely coming.
