Addressing the nation, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Hurricane Fiona is very powerful and dangerous. "We are seeing devastating images come out. Prince Edward Island (PEI) has experienced storm damage like they have never seen," Justin Trudeau said.

The US National Hurricane Center said on Saturday that Storm Fiona made landfall in eastern Canada's Nova Scotia.

With maximum sustained winds of 90 miles (144 kilometres) per hour and heavy rainfall, the NHC said the storm would affect many parts of eastern Canada.

When the storm was about 160 miles (255 km) northeast of Halifax, it weakened somewhat as it travelled north. As a result of the storm, at least 400,000 households lost electricity in Nova Scotia.

Killing at least eight people and knocking out power for virtually all of Puerto Rico's 3.3 million people during a sweltering heat wave, the storm-battered Caribbean islands earlier in the week.

India asks its nationals in Canada to 'remain vigilant' over sharp increase in hate crime incidents

Canada on Thursday launched a long-awaited review of its cannabis regulations, four years after becoming the first major economy to legalize its recreational use.

An expert panel led by Morris Rosenberg, a former deputy minister of justice, is to measure the impact of legalization on youth, Indigenous peoples and others, as well as the economy and an illicit market that the new regime was meant to displace.

The panel is also to examine regulatory burdens on the industry and determine if a separate framework for medical marijuana -- which has been legal since 2001 -- needed to be maintained in order to provide access to patients.

The mandated review, coming one year late due to the pandemic, is expected to take 18 months.

The industry has complained about what it calls exceptionally high taxes on cannabis, a glut of stores -- both licensed and unlicensed -- and restrictions on advertising and marketing that have made it harder to compete with the black market.

At a news conference, Canada's health minister Jean-Yves Duclos said preliminary data this year showed 69 per cent of the cannabis market has moved from illicit sources to legal, regulated suppliers.

The review, he said, will help the government "strengthen the (cannabis) act so that it meets the needs of all Canadians while continuing to displace the illicit market."

Addictions minister Carolyn Bennett said, "We knew that young people are at increased risk of experiencing harms from cannabis, such as mental health problems including dependence and disorders related to anxiety and depression."

Public awareness campaigns, she said, have made "young people more aware of the harms of consuming cannabis," but their level of consumption has not fallen since legalization, as hoped.

Rather, it has remained relatively stable, she said.

According to government data, 25 per cent of the population, or 9.5 million Canadians, used cannabis in 2021, down slightly from the previous year.

They spent an average of Can$69 (US$51) on pot per month.

During these dwindling days of summer, black bears and park rangers are in a fight over Canada's mountain fruit trees.

Black bears are drawn to fruit trees, so townsite residents have been warned to remove the trees. This has become the main focus of park staff including removing cherry trees as well as fruit bushes, which can lure bears in search of food ahead of winter.

Parks Canada in a statement said, "The continuous presence of bears in the Jasper townsite, often in residential yards just metres from people, is an unacceptable safety risk for visitors and residents." In addition, "Bears living in constant proximity to people and residences have an increased likelihood of gaining access to human food or garbage, and of accidental aggressive physical encounters."

Till now, at least 10 bears have been discovered in the region. The most recent one was of a black bear and her two cubs.

The bears are reluctant to leave as the fruit trees offer a high food reward for them, especially, when they are preparing for hibernation.

Till now, at least 20 fruit trees have been removed from the region. This isn't a new problem as with converting wildland for urban uses, the mammals are pushed towards human habitation.

The Guardian reported the municipality saying in its statement, "Removing the trees is a necessary measure from wildlife conservation and public safety perspectives."

The neighbouring Banff also struggled with the same problem, to reduce human-bear interactions and the municipality earlier by law banned fruit trees. But this plan was halted as it was difficult to remove existing plants, so it swapped fruit-bearing trees for native flora.

Last week the shooting rampage that took place in Canada’s Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario killed two people including a police officer, while at least three others were injured. Among those injured was a 28-year-old Indian student who has recently succumbed to the injuries sustained during last Monday’s shooting, said the police department.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) said Satwinder Singh, who was injured in the shooting last Monday in Milton, died at the Hamilton General Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. “Singh was an international student from India who was working part-time at MK Auto Repairs at the time of the shooting,” read the statement.

The HRPS went to express their condolences to the family and friends of the victims and the communities impacted by the “horrible tragedy”. The two others who died during the shooting rampage were Toronto Police Constable Andrew Hong, 48, and Shakeel Ashraf, 38, a mechanic who owned MK Auto Repairs. The gunman later identified as Sean Petrie was later shot dead by the police.

According to local media reports, Singh’s father was surrounded by friends and family when he gave the staff at the Hamilton General Hospital permission to pull his son off life support on September 17. “The father, who had not seen his son since before the pandemic, had just arrived earlier from Dubai, where he works as a truck driver,” said Sarabjot Kaur, a cousin who grew up with Singh to the Toronto Star newspaper.

Singh’s online GoFundMe page said that the former international student had been declared brain dead and was on life support. He was reportedly described as a “loving son, brother and grandson who will be missed daily.”

Singh had finished his MBA in marketing from India and was a student at Conestoga College who was working part-time at the MK Collision Centre in Milton. As of Sunday afternoon, Singh’s GoFundMe page has raised more than 35,000 dollars which would help his family to return his body to India.

Investigators believe the attack was “unprovoked” and the suspect was on the lookout for an officer, the local media reported. The shooting happened on September 12, following the gunman killing a Toronto police Const. Hong, inside a Tim Hortons, after which he went across the street carjacked another victim and continued to Milton where he shot three more people at the MK Auto Repairs.

ALSO READ: Two people, including police officer, shot dead in Canada According to local media reports, Singh’s father was surrounded by friends and family when he gave the staff at the Hamilton General Hospital permission to pull his son off life support on September 17. He was reportedly described as a “loving son, brother and grandson who will be missed daily.” Singh had finished his MBA in marketing from India and was a student at Conestoga College who was working part-time at the MK Collision Centre in Milton. (With inputs from agencies)

Canada: Indian student shot last week succumbs to injuries

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared Monday, the day of Queen Elizabeth's funeral, a federal holiday to mourn the monarch's death.

"On September 19, Canadians from across the country will pay their respects to Canada's longest-reigning sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," Trudeau said in a statement on Tuesday. "For most Canadians, she was the only monarch we ever knew and many of us felt a deep affection and appreciation for her dedication to Canada."

Monday will be a holiday for all federal government employees. Other employers, including provincial and territorial governments, are not required to follow suit.

The premiers of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador issued statements declaring Monday a one-time holiday.

Canadian police has now found one of the suspects of the mass stabbing dead, the other suspect who is his brother is still on the run. the police had issued an arrest warrant against them after their stabbing spree.

Canada: 10 killed, 18 injured in multiple stabbing incidents; one suspect dead, other on the run

Police announced on Monday that one suspect has been found dead and that his injuries were not self-inflicted in connection with the stabbing killings of ten persons in the Canadian state of Saskatchewan. They are still looking for a second suspect.

Damien Sanderson, 31, was found deceased, and according to Regina Police Chief Evan Bray, they think Myles Sanderson, 30, is hurt and on the run.

They suspect Myles is in Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan, even though Damien's body was discovered close to the stabbing locations.

“His body was located outdoors in a heavily grassed area in proximity to a house that was being examined. We can confirm he has visible injuries. These injuries are not believed to be self-inflicted at this point,” said RCMP Commanding Officer Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, as reported by AP.

Authorities at the James Smith Cree Nation and the Saskatchewan hamlet of Weldon claim that some of the victims were targeted while others allegedly looked to have been picked at random. They have not stated a motive for the crimes, but a top Indigenous elder implied that drugs may have played some role.

Authorities have sent out advisories in Canada's three large prairie provinces, which also include Manitoba and Alberta, and notified US border officials, even though they suspect Myles is in Regina, roughly 335 kilometres south of where the stabbings occurred.

Fear swept through the rural, working-class area of Saskatchewan that was terrorised by the crimes, as one suspect was still at large. According to a witness who claimed to have lost family members, people with bloody wounds could be seen all over the Indigenous reserve.

Given that similar crimes are less frequent in Canada than they are in the United States, the stabbing attack was one of the country's bloodiest mass murders. In 2020, a man posing as a police officer shot individuals inside their houses and started fires all around the province of Nova Scotia, killing 22 people in the bloodiest gun spree in Canadian history. Ten pedestrians were killed in Toronto in 2019 by a man using a van.

Authorities in Canada are searching for two men who are responsible for the brutal stabbing incident that killed 10 people and injured 15 others on Sunday (September 4) in the Saskatchewan province.

Authorities in Canada are searching for two men who are responsible for the brutal stabbing incident that killed 10 people and injured 15 others on Sunday (September 4) in the Saskatchewan province. The shocking incident happened in the sparsely populated indigenous community. Canadian Prime Justin Trudeau called the mass stabbing "horrific and heartbreaking." On his official Twitter handle, Trudeau wrote, "The attacks in Saskatchewan today are horrific and heartbreaking. I’m thinking of those who have lost a loved one and of those who were injured." Here's what we know so far about the incident How did the incident take place? In a statement, Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore with the RCMP Saskatchewan said that the first stabbing report came at 5:40 am (local time) in the James Smith Cree Nation. Minutes after that, they received reports and calls of other stabbings, at a total of 13 separate locations. The next hours emerged to be extremely chaotic for the authorities in the region as Saskatchewan RCMP sent out multiple alerts and updates on the stabbings. They also issued a Dangerous Persons Alert for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. ALSO READ | Canada mass stabbing: 10 killed, 15 hurt in Saskatchewan province; hunt on for two suspects Who are the suspects? Blackmore also informed that the callers identified the suspects. After the initial probe, the police named the two suspects identified as Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30. Images and descriptions of both were also provided. However, no further details about their motive or the victims were given out. As per the reports and eyewitness accounts, the alleged attackers fled in a vehicle. The police said that the two men were seen travelling in a black Nissan Rogue. Were indigenous people the targets? The incident took place in the region which is sparsely populated by an indigenous community but the assistant commissioner said authorities believe "some of the victims were targeted by the suspects and others were attacked randomly." "To speak to a motive would be extremely difficult at this point in time," Blackmore added. In Canada, indigenous people account for less than 5 per cent of the entire population of about 38 million. Reports have claimed that they suffer from higher levels of poverty, unemployment and a lower life expectancy than other Canadians. ALSO READ | Pope says ‘zero tolerance’ against Catholic Church sexual abuse cases × What did the police say? After the incident, the police issued warnings as their bulletins urged people to report any suspicious people and to take precautions, including sheltering in place. They also warned against picking up hitchhikers or approaching suspicious people. One advisory read: "Do not leave a secure location. Use caution allowing others into your residence." Stabbing incidents in Canada The recent incident reminds the world of several other stabbings that took place in various parts of the country as Canada has witnessed similar incidents. In 2017, a man opened fire during evening prayers at a mosque, killing six people and wounding five. Sorrenti is a Canadian trans Twitch streamer who Kiwi Farms and its deranged users targeted by releasing her personal information. Before Sorrenti, a Republican senator from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, was targeted in a 'swatting' incident linked to the website.
