<h2>What do we know about the aid workers’ death?</h2>

Kyiv accused Moscow’s troops of killing Emma Igual, a Spanish citizen, and Anthony Ihnat, a Canadian citizen, both working for the NGO Road to Relief. They said two German citizens working for the aid group had also been injured after the Russian shelling in the eastern Donetsk region.

The organisation on its Instagram page said that the volunteers were helping evacuate the wounded from the front-line areas and were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the two of Chasiv Yar.&nbsp;

The other two volunteers were identified as German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick and Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, who were seriously wounded, according to the organisation.&nbsp;

At the time, they also said that the organisation was unable to find the van’s fourth passenger, Igual. The death of the 32-year-old Spanish citizen, who was also the organisation’s director, was confirmed by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.&nbsp;

“Unfortunately, I can confirm a missile hit a vehicle in which this Spanish worker was travelling who was working for a humanitarian NGO in Ukraine. We have verbal confirmation of her death,” said Albares, during a press conference in New Delhi where he was in the midst of attending the G20 Summit.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A painful, irreparable loss’: Kyiv</h2>

The Ukrainian officials called the deaths of the two volunteers, “a painful, irreparable loss” and said that the aid workers had dedicated themselves to limiting the harm to civilians caught in the conflict. The volunteers also carried out evacuations and distributed humanitarian relief to those affected, said the officials in Kyiv.&nbsp;

According to the aid organisation, the volunteers were on their way to assess the needs of civilians on the outskirts of Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city that witnessed some of the longest and bloodiest battles before it was occupied by Russian forces back in May.&nbsp;

Indian students protesting in Canada over the housing crisis have finally been given relief by the authorities.

The protests began Tuesday (Sept. 5) at the campus of Canadore College in the town of North Bay in Ontario. However, by Thursday (Sept. 7), the students had reached an agreement with the college authorities, who received assurances that the demands of students seeking affordable accommodation would be taken care of.

The protesting students had been living in tents pitched near the college&nbsp;grounds. The new college year in Canada begins in September, and has witnessed an influx of over 3,500 international students. But, given that North Bay is a small-sparsely populated town, students are having a hard time finding affordable accommodation, thanks to inflated rents due to massive inflation.

The Montreal Youth Students' Organization or MYSO, which backed the protesting students, has termed the situation as ‘housing crisis.’

<h2>Agreement reached</h2>

The college authorities have claimed that all those protesting at the campus will be housed. The media outlet North Bay Today cited a college spokesperson as saying, “All of the Canadore students involved in the demonstrations this week at the Commerce Court Campus are currently being housed.”

It added, “Canadore continues to work with all students to find appropriate accommodation. We will provide a more fulsome update next week.”

A statement released by MYSO also mentioned the assurances offered by the college administration.

“Accommodation will be arranged for them at affordable rates, full fee will be refunded without any deduction if students wanted to transfer elsewhere and classes would have an online option as rules of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada or IRCC,” said the statement by MYSO.

<h2>Canada considers foreign student cap</h2>

The development comes as the Canadian government mulls capping how many foreign students can enter Canada.&nbsp;

Canadian Housing Minister Sean Fraser said, “It was one of the options that we ought to consider.”

The government believes the influx of these students has exacerbated the housing crisis in the country. The housing crisis is especially dire in cities like Toronto, where a six-figure annual income is needed to afford a house.

In yet another attack on Hindu temples in Canada, the Shri Mata Bhameshwari Durga temple, in the Canadian town of Surrey was reportedly desecrated with anti-India and pro-Khalistan graffiti on its outer walls, on Thursday&nbsp;(September 7). This comes less than a month after one of the biggest and oldest Hindu temples in Canada was vandalised with Khalistan referendum posters.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in Surrey?</h2>

The incident came to light on Thursday morning and was reported to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).&nbsp;

The&nbsp;desecration&nbsp;also took place a day after secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) reportedly announced its intentions to “lock down” India’s Consulate in Vancouver. Rohit, a member of the temple management, told Hindustan Times that the graffiti has since been removed.&nbsp;

On August 12, Khalistan&nbsp;supporters pasted the posters on the main door of the temple of Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, located in Surrey, British Columbia which read, “Canada investigates India’s role in June 18th assassination,” referring to the killing of known Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms and shows two masked men, pasting the posters and taking photos before fleeing the scene. The Khalistani extremists have been claiming that India was responsible for the killing of Hardeep Nijjar, one of the prominent secessionist faces.

The Canadian federal government on Thursday (Sept 07) named an appellate judge who will lead a public inquiry into foreign interference in the country's elections.

He added Hogue will have full access to all key documents needed for the inquiry.&nbsp;

This announcement comes after months of pressure on Justin Trudeau's Liberals to launch a full inquiry amid claims of meddling by China, including concerns over illegal "police stations" operating in the country.&nbsp;

Back in May, Canada expelled a Chinese diplomat after an intelligence report accused him of trying to intimidate a Canadian lawmaker crucial to Beijing's treatment of its Muslim minority.&nbsp;

However, Canada's efforts to investigate foreign interference were halted in recent months after the officials resigned in late spring.&nbsp;

She is further required to submit her next report by December 2024 providing recommendations to protect Canada's democratic institutions from foreign interference.

Both reports&nbsp;are due ahead of Canada's federal elections, which are scheduled for autumn 2023.&nbsp;

Canadian government appoints judge to lead public inquiry into foreign interference

Canada on Thursday named an appeal's court judge to lead a public inquiry into allegations of foreign meddling -- including by China -- in its elections.

Quebec&nbsp;Court of Appeal Justice Marie-Josee Hogue's appointment follows the sudden resignation in June of another official tapped to investigate the claims in a less formal way.

"Foreign interference in Canadian democratic institutions is unacceptable,"&nbsp;Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told a news conference.

"Justice Hogue will be tasked with examining and assessing interference by China, Russia and other foreign states and non-state actors," he said.

She will have broad investigative powers and, according to Leblanc, will be expected "to follow the evidence" as she probes "any potential impacts on the 2019 and 2021 general elections."

Canada-China relations hit a new low this year amid accusations of Chinese meddling in Canada's last two elections and the attempted intimidation of MPs that led to the expulsion of a Chinese diplomat in May.

Beijing has called the accusations "groundless," and responded by sending home a Canadian diplomat from Canada's consulate in Shanghai.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority liberal government initially balked at holding a public inquiry, as it faced pressure to explain how it first responded to the claims that Beijing sought to subvert Canada's democratic process.

The reported accusations included secret campaign donations and Chinese operatives working for Canadian candidates or lawmakers in an attempt to influence policy.

More recently, it emerged that Beijing sought to intimidate an opposition Canadian lawmaker and his relatives in Hong Kong over his criticisms of China.

The Tory MP, Michael Chong, is scheduled to testify about his experience at a US congressional hearing next week.&nbsp;

Former governor general David Johnston was originally tasked with looking into the claims, but quit after 12 weeks, citing a "highly partisan atmosphere around my appointment and work."

Opposition parties accused him of being too close to Trudeau and demanded an independent public inquiry instead.

Some also pressed to have its scope broadened to include Russia, Iran and others hostile to Canada.

Before resigning, Johnston released a draft report in which he concluded Beijing sought to interfere in Canada's 2019 and 2021 ballots, but failed to change the outcome of the votes.

Hogue's nomination comes after months of negotiations between the government and opposition parties on the public inquiry's terms of reference and who should lead it.&nbsp;

LeBlanc said she has the support of all parties.

She is to release an initial report in February 2024 and a final version ahead of a ballot expected the following year.

Drivers in Canada's Toronto were on Wednesday (August 30) warned to keep their car windows closed after a truck spilt crates carrying five million bees onto a road. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the Halton Regional Police said they received a call early Wednesday that bee crates had come loose from a truck and spilt onto Guelph Line, north of Dundas Street, in Burlington.

It was “quite the scene,” Constable Ryan Anderson said, adding that crates were on the road and swarms of bees were flying around. The initial beekeeper who was present at the scene was stung a few times, Anderson said.

An hour later, the regional police put out a notice on social media and several beekeepers approached the police to help. Six or seven beekeepers eventually arrived at the scene, the police official further said.

By 9.15 am Wednesday, police said most of the five million bees were safely collected and the crates were being hauled away. Some crates had been left behind for the uncollected bees to return to them on their own.

It was reported that these bees might have been a part of a pollination service, in which farmers hire beekeepers to help pollinate their crops.

Talking to CBS news, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada pointed to the many laws enacted by US states targeting the transgender community.

"Since the beginning of 2023, certain states in the US have passed laws banning drag shows and restricting the transgender community from access to gender-affirming care and from participation in sporting events," said the spokesperson.

Addressing the government's decision to issue the advisory, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasised the importance of protecting "particular groups of Canadians".

She said that the government employed experts "to look carefully around the world and to monitor whether there are particular dangers to particular groups of Canadians".

However, as per BBC, she did not comment on whether discussions were held with the US government before implementing the advisory.

Among them, nine male belugas swim in Friendship Cove, and 28 female belugas swim in Arctic Cove. A 68-year-old Indian man was stabbed 17 times in broad daylight in Canada while he was out with his granddaughter.

The gruesome attack took place on Tuesday in Oshawa around 10.45 am when he was out for his routing walk with his one-and-half-year-old granddaughter.

Though the local police have not revealed the victim’s identity, the New Delhi-based Hindustan Times newspaper has confirmed that the victim’s name is Dilip Kumar Dholani, a resident of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Dholani arrived last week and has been staying with the family at their residence in Oshawa town in the Greater Toronto Area or GTA.

Local reports said that the attack took place just a few kilometres from the house of the victim’s family.

Their surveillance camera caught the whole incident showing the attacker running across the street in full sprint and then repeatedly stabbing&nbsp;Dholani.

Even while lying on the ground with injuries, Dholani continued to shout for help and didn’t let go of his granddaughter till his daughter-in-law and neighbours rushed to his assistance.

<h2>Indian community outraged&nbsp;</h2>

Afterwards, police were called in and Dholani was immediately rushed to a Toronto-area trauma centre for treatment. The victim is currently in critical but stable condition.

According to media reports, the toddler remains uninjured.

On Wednesday, the police arrested the 20-year-old accused Noah Denyer, of Oshawa, from a residence nearby.

“It was actually a lot of video surveillance and witnesses that came forward that led us to a quick apprehension of this suspect,” Duty Insp. Chris Ludlow told CTV news.

Police believe the attack appeared to be random and the victim and suspect did not know one another.

Dilip Kumar Dholani’s son Dinesh told the Hindustan Times his father was “lucky” to have survived after suffering 17 stab wounds.

A state of emergency was declared on Friday in Kelowna, it is a city which is some 300 kilometres (180 miles) east of Vancouver. It has a population or about 150,000. The province with a coast on Pacific Ocean province has said that next 24 to 48 hours may be the most difficult.

Some of the hills around the city blazed in the predawn light after wildfires that had been burning since Tuesday jumped Lake Okanagan and spread into parts of Kelowna.

"Residents under Evacuation Alert are advised to be ready to leave their home at a moment's notice," the city said in a statement. More than 2,400 properties were being evacuated, officials said.

The reach of flames and disruption caused by the wildfires are indicative of severity of this year's chaos. This is worst-on-record Canadian wildfire season.

Some 885 miles (1,425 km) to the northeast, the massive blaze threatening Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories' capital city, made little progress on Thursday, but changing winds meant it could reach the outskirts by the weekend, said Mike Westwick, the territories' fire information officer.

"The next two days are absolutely critical and will be some of the most challenging of the season," he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC) early on Friday.

"We're going to be putting everything we have into slowing that progression down. We're going to be throwing aircraft at it, and when it's safe, we're going to be throwing people at it," Westwick said.

Reuters reported that the fire is about 15 km northwest of the city. However, it is expected that changing winds will drive the flames closer. The only highway out of town is open but fires are burning on either side of it.

"Leaving Yellowknife, you're driving into the smoke," said Brent Saulnier, who had been visiting the city from neighboring Alberta. "It is on fire on both sides of the road. ... It's a very surreal experience."

Many still must leave the city of around 20,000 with the deadline for evacuation set at noon local time (1800 GMT).

"The noon deadline doesn't mean that the highway closes at noon," Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty said in an interview with CBC. "We're just really encouraging folks to go as soon as possible. The highway will continue to be open as long as it's safe."
