The officials released a statement saying that the next 24 to 48 hours could be the most critical.

“We are declaring a provincial state of emergency to ensure that we have rapid access to any tools that we may need to respond to this situation. And these tools are necessary to support communities, to support families and support those brave frontline workers who are battling the fires in our forests and in our communities," said British Columbia Premier David Eby.

“That right now we are facing the worst wildfire season in our province's history. This unprecedented situation has come to a head this evening in just the last 24 hours the situation has evolved and deteriorated quite rapidly. In just the last hour we've gone from about 4,500 homes under evacuation to about 15,000 homes, families being evacuated from their homes across the province,” he added.

"Over the past 24 hours, the situation has evolved rapidly and we are in for an extremely challenging situation in the days ahead," the government of British Columbia said in a statement.

"We fought hard last night to protect our community," Jason Brolund, West Kelowna fire chief, told reporters. "Night turned to day because of the orange glow of the clouds and the fire."

The officials further added that more than 2,400 buildings were evacuated and thousands more were on alert. Brolund said that several structures were destroyed in West Kelowna during the night.

Situated towards the east of Vancouver, West Kelowna is home to 36,000 people. The wildfires also prompted evacuations in Kelowna, where a population of about 150,000 resides.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after his visit to an evacuation centre for Northwest Territories residents, said that the government will make all the possible efforts to help communities rebuild the “terrible losses”.

"The federal government is there with the significant military assets. We're coordinating the air evacuations, we're making sure that we're there to respond to all the needs of the community now, and we’ll be there in the coming months and years as we look to keep people safe moving forward even as we rebuild in places where there are terrible losses," the Canadian Prime Minister said.

He also paid tributes to first responders, police and volunteers for all their efforts saying that the way Canadians were looking out for each other was “truly extraordinary”.&nbsp;

"It's, it really is a recognised reflection of the extraordinary generosity not just the people in Edmonton, but people right across, right across the country, welcoming up their home, opening up their homes and their communities to people fleeing what has been an extraordinarily difficult summer," Trudeau said.

"And this is something we've seen right across the country this summer. From the east coast, the fires in Nova Scotia, to dealing with floods across the country with wildfires in just about every province across this country. Terrible loss, increased extreme weather events. And all through it. We've seen Canadians step up, obviously, first responders, firefighters, police, volunteers, Red Cross have been incredible in supporting and responding to people," he added.

Authorities have sounded an alarm declaring a territory-wide state of emergency and an evacuation order for the outskirts of Yellowknife.&nbsp;

"We find ourselves in a crisis situation and our government is using every tool available to assist," said the territory's minister of environment and climate change, Shane Thompson.

Residents have been ordered to clear a 22-mile stretch of Highway 3 that connects Yellowknife to the rest of Canada.

NWT Fire has warned that the massive blaze would likely reach the highway on Thursday.

Yellowknife residents have been warned that falling ash and visible smoke are likely in the city as the 163,000-hectares (402,000 acres) fire spreads.

Yellowknife, which is home to 20,000 people, is on high alert. Authorities have warned the residents that a bigger evacuation order may be on its way. Meanwhile, thousands of residents of five other communities in the territory have already been told to evacuate.&nbsp;

Canada is currently grappling with its most severe wildfire season on record, with over 1,000 active fires raging across the country. 230 of these, as per The Guardian, are in the Northwest Territories.

Due to an enduring heat wave, on Tuesday, Western Canada saw 19 daily heat records broken. The heatwave is fuelling the more than a thousand fires plaguing the nation.

A life-sized street-food costume was sold in Canada on Monday for a whopping $11,900 (C$16,025). The outfit, which is made of latex, vulcanized rubber and synthetic materials, became a talking point on social media after it was put up for auction, on an Alberta government surplus auction site, in the month of July.

On Monday night, the auction was closed by an Edmonton-based Donair&nbsp;&amp; Poutine chain when a bid of $11,900 was offered.

More than 1,700 bids were registered for the costume, as per the provincial government website when PrimeTime Donair and Poutine eventually wrapped up the month-long online bidding war.

Wrapped in tinfoil, the 4ft 8in (142cm) costume comes with replica meat, tomatoes, onions, sauce and lettuce to give it an authentic feel along with a silver bodysuit to be worn underneath.

Owner of PrimeTime Donair, Adil Asim said that he was amused by the suit and thought that it was funny.

"We were amused by it. We thought it was funny!" CTV News Edmonton quoted him as saying.

As per the Alberta legislature newsletter Alberta Today, the suit was originally designed for the 2015 PSA campaign against distracted driving.

The concept behind the campaign was to walk a donair, which would be a visual representation showcasing the hallucinatory dangers of driving while high, which the department had titled 'Don’t Drive and Donair'.

The campaign was originally pitched under the PC government but was later scrapped by the newly elected NDP government in 2015.

Asim, in a conversation with CTV, said that he wasn't yet sure as to what could be possibly done with the costume and how it could be fully utilised.

"I might squeeze my 16-year-old son into it, just to kind of get up, get it going around, but we definitely were thinking of collaborating with some comedians possibly and doing some TikTok content," he said.

Spokesperson Tamisan Bencz-Knight said that the new owner of the Donair costume was also having thoughts about using the suit for charitable causes.

"Whatever that looks like, whether it's providing meals, participating in an event or even just having our mascot out with your mascot giving hugs and high fives, there are always opportunities, so we’ll see what happens," she said.

Canadian federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan said in a statement: "We are working closely with the Government of the Northwest Territories to ensure communities have the support they need."&nbsp;

On Monday, the city of Yellowknife proclaimed a local emergency to prepare for potential hazards from surrounding wildfires. According to a statement from city officials, the declaration was issued as a precaution and no residents have been put on an evacuation order.&nbsp;

Canada: State of emergency declared in Northwest Territories due to wildfires

Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE), Canada's corporate watchdog on Tuesday (August 15)initiated a probe&nbsp;against Canadian unit of Ralph Lauren, the high-end fashion brand, over allegations that it made use of forced labour from China's Uyghur minority. The watchdog has already launched several similar probes against Nike Canada and Dynasty Gold, a mining firm.

The investigation has followed a complaint that says,&nbsp;"Ralph Lauren Canada has supply relationships with Chinese companies that use or benefit from the use of Uyghur forced labour." The complaint was filed last year by a coalition of 28 civil society organisations.

"I have decided that the Ralph Lauren complaint warrants an investigation," ombudsperson Sheri Meyerhoffer said in a statement.&nbsp;

Ralph Lauren's US parent company, she said, has disputed Canadian jurisdiction over this matter. It has argued that its subsidiary in Canada "is not responsible for decision-making" and that all of its operations are overseen from US headquarters.

The Ottawa-based Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project welcomed the investigation in a statement.&nbsp;

"There is credible evidence that Ralph Lauren is linked to numerous Chinese companies that use Uyghur forced labour in their supply chains," it said.&nbsp;

Rights groups have been saying that more than one million Uyghurs and individuals from other Muslim minorities have been sent by China in re-education camps. Uyghur Muslims population is mostly situated in China's western Xinjiang region. Rights groups have been alleging that minorities have been facing slew of abuses&nbsp;including forced labour.

China, though it denies these allegations, has faced a lot of flak from Western nations, including Canada. The Western countries have called the crackdown in Xinjiang a genocide. The Khalistani extremists have been claiming that India was responsible for the killing of Hardeep Nijjar,&nbsp;one of the prominent secessionist faces.

The 45-year-old Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief was shot&nbsp;dead on June 18 by two unidentified men in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Surrey, Canada.

Notably, this is the third such incident of temple vandalisation in Canada this year. In April,&nbsp;BAPS Swaminarayan temple, belonging to&nbsp;Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, was defaced with anti-India graffiti.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;defacement included&nbsp;graffiti targeting India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and support for the Khalistan movement.&nbsp;

Similarly, in January, Gauri Shankar Mandir, a prominent temple in Ontario was vandalised with anti-India graffiti.&nbsp;

“We strongly condemn the defacing of Gauri Shankar Mandir in Brampton, a symbol of Indian heritage, with anti-India graffiti. The hateful act of vandalism has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. We have raised our concerns on the matter with Canadian authorities,” the Indian mission said at the time, in response to the vandalism.&nbsp;

New Delhi has already reminded Prime Minister Justin Trudeau government's to take pre-emptive actions against Khalistani elements, who have seemingly made a safe space for themselves in the North American country.

GAC said that attacks against Chong were uncovered while monitoring social media and the internet's other parts for foreign interference ahead of a 19 June by-election. The attacks were seen emerging from news accounts on WeChat which amplified falsehoods about Chong.

They claimed that the attacks appeared co-ordinated and abnormal in volume. The GAC stated that one-third of the accounts which were amplifying the attacks were either accounts likely linked to the Chinese state or state-media outlets. The rest accounts were anonymous and no previous posts were made about Canadian politics.

The Chinese embassy in Canada, in a statement to the BBC, called the accusations "purely groundless". "We never interfere in Canada's internal affairs, and have no interests whatsoever in doing so," the statement stated.&nbsp;

GAC stated that it will be speaking to Chinese representatives in Canada regarding the posts, adding that "Canada will never accept any form of interference in our democracy or internal affairs".&nbsp;

The letter stated that in 2018, the agency was probing organised crime groups and became aware of issues with students not attending schools and getting involved in criminal activity.&nbsp;

This led to new lines of enquiry which led the CBSA to identify more than 2,000 cases where fraudulent documents may have been used to obtain a student visa, the letter said. "In collaboration with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), we reviewed those cases and we narrowed them down to approximately 300 cases of concern," it added.&nbsp;

Agency spokesperson Bérubé told The Globe and Mail that uncovering links to crime was a priority for the agency. The CBSA's Pacific Region team recently probed Brijesh Mishra, an Indian education agent who allegedly played a role in the scam involving fake Canadian college admission letters. He was arrested last month.&nbsp;

The province of Alberta withdrew its support for a possible bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, ending the chance of bringing the multi-sport event back to Canada.

Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow said in a statement that hosting the Games, which typically attract more than 4,000 athletes from the 54 nations of the Commonwealth, was not in line with the interests of Alberta taxpayers.

Schow said that according to current bid estimates hosting the event "could result in a cost of up to CAN$2.68 billion (US$2.01 billion).

"The corporate sponsorship model and limited broadcast revenues for the Commonwealth Games would have put 93 percent of those costs and risks on taxpayers," he added.

"We committed to remain transparent with Albertans about the costs of hosting international sporting events and clearly demonstrating a return on our investment for the people and communities in Alberta," Schow said.

"That is why we have made the decision not to continue pursuing the bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games."

The move comes weeks after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games because of escalating costs, leaving organizers "hugely disappointed."

Victoria state premier Daniel Andrews said the initial estimate of Aus$2 billion (US$1.36 billion) needed to hold the games would more likely be closer to Aus$7 billion.

Commonwealth Sport Canada, the body responsible for organizing Canadian teams participating in the Commonwealth Games, had been expected to complete a feasibility study for a 2030 Commonwealth Games bid by Alberta later this month.

They issued a statement saying they believed Victoria's decision to withdraw from hosting 2026 "was a significant factor" in the provincial government's decision to pull the plug.

Canada has hosted four Commonwealth Games, in 1930, 1954, 1978 and 1994.

The last edition of the event was held in 2022 in Birmingham, after the English city stepped in to replace Durban in South Africa, which was stripped of hosting rights after a series of missed deadlines and financial problems.

Victoria was the exclusive bidder for the 2026 edition.
