The claims that a well-known television news anchor in Canada lost her job as a result of "going grey" have provoked outrage and scepticism, rocking one of the top media organisations in the nation and illuminating the strict expectations women face in the workplace.

In a two-minute video uploaded on Twitter, Lisa LaFlamme stated on Monday that she had been fired as the anchor of CTV National News, one of the most popular evening programmes in the nation.

LaFlamme claimed to have been "blindsided" by the decision to terminate her contract in the video, which has now received over 4 million views.

She remarked, "I’m still shocked and saddened. At 58, I still thought I’d have a lot more time to tell more of the stories that impact our daily lives."

One of several ladies who stopped colouring their hair during the pandemic and let their natural hair colour shine was LaFlamme, who began anchoring the flagship programme in 2011. LaFlamme referred to the choice as "liberating" and told viewers she regretted not acting sooner.

Michael Melling, a senior executive at CTV News, was said to have "asked who had approved the decision to let Lisa's hair go grey," according to a report in the Globe and Mail on Thursday. Before finally informing LaFlamme that her contract was being terminated, Melling and LaFlamme sparred over matters of journalism, according to the Globe and Mail.

For the past 35 years, LaFlamme has reported for CTV News from war zones and the scenes of devastating natural disasters. She most recently took home the Canadian Screen Award for Best News Anchor.

According to Amanda Watson, a sociologist at Simon Fraser University, the controversy surrounding LaFlamme's dismissal has highlighted the difficulties women, especially those at the top of their field, have to face on a daily basis.

Scorching hot summer temperatures caused by climate change is wreaking havoc across the planet. Reportedly, Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador is facing its worst-ever forest wildfire, which has been raging for the better part of the last two weeks.

Such has been the state of affairs that Premier Andrew Furey has issued a state of emergency in the province and stated that things had changed significantly in the last 36 hours.

“Over the last 36 hours, things have changed. We were predicting that we could manage this. However, with the wind change, we are afraid that there will be a significant smoke impact. This is a dynamic, evolving situation as all fires are, but we can’t wait for the last minute, we have to act now,” said Andrew Furey.

According to local media reports, the area has been ravaged by two separate wildfires. One is blazing in Newfoundland near the Bay d'Espoir Highway having torched more than 12,355 acres already, while the second in Paradise Lake has destroyed more than 16,062 acres.

The heavy smoke in the region was complicating the efforts to stop the blaze as the water bombers were not able to look ahead of the fire.

One of the firefighters battling the wildfire was quoted as saying, "We're doing our very best to try and get that Bay d'Espoir Highway open again, but the reality is the fire's on both sides of the road, the wind's not helping down there, and the size of the fire is increased."

Reportedly, an outdoor fire ban has been issued as well which prohibits the setting of fires on forestland or within 300 metres of forestland.

A famous portrait of Sir Winston Churchill has been stolen in Canada and the police believe that it was swapped with a fake picture. The portrait known as “Roaring Lion” was captured by renowned photographer Yousuf Karsh just after Churchill’s address at the Canadian parliament in 1941.

The staff at Château Laurier hotel in Ottawa – the place where the portrait was kept – felt that there was something wrong as it did not match the other portraits taken by Karsh. The hotel also houses the portraits of Martin Luther King Jr, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway and Queen Elizabeth II.

Jerry Fielder, who oversees Karsh’s estate, was contacted and he discovered that the original portrait was missing. “I’ve seen that signature for 43 years. So, it took me just one second to know that someone had tried to copy it,” Fielder told Guardian. “It was a fake.”

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has also brought Canada and Germany closer together. Canada is seeking to boost energy and critical mineral exports to Germany. On Monday, during a 3-day visit, the German chancellor Olaf Scholz met with the Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

Last week, Olaf Scholz was heckled and booed during an event. A survey found that only 25% of Germans believe Chancellor Scholz is doing a good job. With Germany staring at recession, Scholz has reached out to Canada. Palki Sharma tells you why it may not help.

Gravitas: Olaf Scholz loses public support in Germany

Visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday to discuss access to alternative energy sources as his nation works to swiftly reduce its dependency on Russian oil and gas.

On the first day of his three-day tour, Scholz stated at a joint news conference in Montreal that Germany is expediting the development of pipelines and LNG ports infrastructure in order to enhance imports and is contacting other countries, such as Canada, to expand output.

He added: "It is indispensable because we want to move away from our dependency on Russian gas supplies," indicating that as Germany transitions to a more renewable energy source, the country would require more liquid natural gas.

Scholz is also interested in potential hydrogen exports from Canada. The two leaders will visit a potential hydrogen manufacturing site in the province of Newfoundland on Tuesday together with a sizable business delegation.

"A reliable supplier of the clean energy that a net-zero (emissions) world requires," claimed Trudeau of Canada. However, he minimised the prospect of direct LNG shipments from Canada to Germany, pointing to the great distance between the gas reserves in Western Canada and the Atlantic ports for export.

He and Scholz also alluded to a significant hydrogen agreement that would be revealed on Tuesday. Trudeau stated, "We're moving forward on a range of investments around hydrogen and look forward to speaking about that more tomorrow."

In order to achieve a net-zero economy, Germany has placed a bet on hydrogen, according to Scholz, who also predicted that Canada will be crucial in the future development of green hydrogen.

The two leaders will also talk about business potential in the extraction of essential minerals and the automotive industries, as well as help for Ukraine, including eventual post-war reconstruction.

Canadian cardinal Marc Ouellet on Friday strongly denied claims of sexual assault made against him and said he was ready to prove his "innocence". Ouellet is accused of abusing a female intern, identified only as "F", from 2008 to 2010, when he was archbishop of Quebec.

The 78-year-old, who was once considered a strong candidate to be pope, was named in court documents this week relating to a class action suit targeting more than 80 members of the clergy in the archdiocese of Quebec.

He rejected the accusations in a statement, a day after the Vatican said it ruled out a formal church investigation.

"Having learnt of the false accusations made against me by the complainant, I strongly deny having made inappropriate gestures towards her," he said.

"I consider the interpretation and circulation of these allegations of sexual assaults to be defamatory. If a civil inquiry is opened, I will actively participate so the truth is established and my innocence is recognised," said the statement in French and Italian published on the Vatican website.

The claims against him in the civil suit, which the Quebec supreme court ruled could go ahead in May, are among the testimonies of 101 people who say they were sexually assaulted by members of the clergy and church staff from 1940 to today.

They surfaced just weeks after Pope Francis visited Canada, where he apologised for the decades-long abuse of Indigenous children in Catholic-run residential schools.

So far, the cardinal is not facing any criminal charges.

No grounds for formal probe

Ouellet's denial comes a day after Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said a "preliminary investigation" already ordered by Pope Francis had found there were "no elements to initiate a trial".

The pontiff went back to the author of that probe, Father Jacques Servais, and was told again there were no grounds for opening a formal investigation.

Ouellet is a prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, one of the most important functions within the Curia, the government of the Vatican.

His accuser claims the cardinal assaulted her multiple times — kissing her, "forcefully" massaging her shoulders, and once sliding his hand along her back to her buttocks.

According to Thursday's Vatican statement, Servais said he had interviewed the woman via Zoom in the presence of a member of the committee.

He was quoted as saying that neither in her report to the pope, nor in the testimony he heard, "did this person make an accusation that would provide material for such an investigation".

Since becoming pope in 2013, Francis has sought to tackle decades-long sexual abuse scandals, although critics insist much more needs to be done.

At a Canadian zoo, feelings are mixed after one wolf pup that escaped after four days was found safely, but another was discovered dead by a road.

Following a strange break-in that released a group of predators from the well-known zoo, conservation officers and zoo personnel in Canada have been searching for a runaway wolf for the past four days.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo announced in a statement on Friday that Tempest, a one-year-old grey wolf, had been discovered and was "back with her family." The statement claimed that she had been found close to the zoo. However, the news was released a day after the zoo reported that Chia, another runaway wolf, had passed away, most likely after being struck by a car.

The zoo added in a statement, "We are so grateful for this positive outcome for Tempest but are still processing the loss of Chia. We are hoping to eventually reopen on Saturday."

On Tuesday morning, the zoo made the announcement that it will be closed to visitors. After "suspicious" damage to the enclosure's fence, it eventually admitted that a group of grey wolves had fled. The incident, according to the zoo, was presumably the product of "malicious intent."

The 120-acre Fraser Valley zoo, which is located outside of Vancouver, is next to a sizable forested region that houses a navy radio communications complex.

Following two attacks—one on a kid who was bit by a black bear and another on a staff member who was attacked by a jaguar—animal rights activists have recently turned their attention to the zoo.

The Vancouver Humane Society published a report in 2019 that criticised the zoo. The zoo's owners invested millions in the building's "major overhaul" in 2020.

The alleged act of vandalism occurs as activists raise awareness of the condition of wolves, which were once common in the area. The province's airborne wolf cull was extended this year for an additional five years. As many as 300 wolves may be killed annually by the contentious programme in an effort to conserve woodland caribou.

Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet who was once considered a strong candidate to be Pope has been accused of sexual assault. This comes as part of a class-action suit targeting more than 80 members of the Clergy in the Archdiocese of Quebec.

Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet accused of sexual assault

Hockey Canada is mired in a sex scandal. It faces accusations of settling a sexual assault lawsuit against 8 players of the junior team. What's worse, the lawsuit was settled with the registration fee aspiring players pay to pursue their dreams. Palki Sharma explains.

Gravitas: Canada Ice Hockey mired in sexual abuse scandal

Weeks after Pope Francis returned from a six-day trip to Canada where he apologised to victims of sexual abuse by the Church, a Canadian cardinal named Marc Ouellet, regarded as a potential successor to him and having a high-ranking position within the Vatican has been accused of sexual assault.

Reportedly, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Cardinal Ouellet and more than 88 members of the clergy in the Quebec diocese. More than 100 victims have lent their weight to the civil lawsuit where some damning claims have been made.

Ouellet's name had not come up in the lawsuit up until now but according to court documents, an alleged victim, identified as 'F' stated that she was interning as a pastoral agent between 2008 and 2010 when the series of assaults by Ouellet took place. The victim added that most of the assaults took place during public events.

Ouellet was the archbishop and head of the archdiocese at the time, parachuted from Rome. He had the authority to hire individuals as pastoral agents and thus his strong position may have forced the victim to keep quiet.

"He grabbed me and then...his hands on my back, they went down pretty low. Quite intrusive for, let's say for someone who is my superior, who is the archbishop of Quebec." said the victim on a Radio show.

"I felt chased after. It became more and more invasive, more and more intense to the point where I stopped attending events. I tried avoiding being in his presence as much as possible," the victim further added.

The court documents further reveal that the victim went to the committee in charge of reviewing sexual allegations 10 years later where she shared her story.

The committee believed her and told her to file a complaint. The committee went to the Vatican in 2021 and filed the complaint. A virtual meeting was arranged between the victim and the Vatican church.

However, more than a year after the meeting, nothing has come out of it as Ouellet continues to hold a prominent public image.

It is pertinent to note that most of the 100-odd victims were sexually abused when they were minors by the priests and other staff with cases dating back to the 1940s.

With the victim 'F' shedding light on Ouellet, one of the big fishes, it is expected to open a pandora's box. In most cases, the abuser has not committed a sexual offence for the first time.

Lawyers representing the plaintiffs believe that more such cases may be unearthed as the lawsuit receives public exposure.

In a move designed to indirectly achieve the goals of a gun control legislation proposed in May, Canada announced Friday it will ban the import of handguns beginning on August 19.

Announcing the move, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told a press briefing, "Such guns have one purpose and one purpose only and that is to kill people."

After the freeze was announced, Canadians rushed to buy guns as the government now wants to prevent gun sellers from restocking their inventory with this import ban.

According to Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, "The import ban announced today will help to keep guns stay off our streets as we work towards implementing Bill C-21, reducing gun violence in the immediate term."

According to Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti, Canada has asked for the extradition of a French priest who is accused of molesting Indigenous children more than 30 years ago. Lametti said in an email to AFP, "I am aware that an extradition request sent to France has been made public, which ministry officials have just confirmed. It is important for Canada and its international partners that serious crimes are fully investigated and prosecuted."

The request was acknowledged as having been received by the French Foreign Ministry, which added that justice officials were handling it. The announcement follows Pope Francis' historic visit to Canada, where he expressed regret for the decades-long abuse of Indigenous children in Catholic-run schools.

A new complaint for a sexual assault that took place about 47 years ago was made in September, and as a result, an arrest warrant for priest Johannes Rivoire, who spent three decades in Canada's far north, has been out there since February. Authorities have not disclosed the number of suspected victims, and he has never been charged.

Between 1998 and 2017, Rivoire was the target of an arrest warrant for the sex abuse of three juveniles. It was never implemented. The priest moved to Lyon, France, from Canada in 1993. According to a person familiar with the issue, Rivoire's dual citizenship poses "a problem" because it is "very complicated" to extradite French citizens. In recent media interviews, the 93-year-old priest insisted he is innocent. His case continues to serve as a symbol of the Church's tolerance of sexual abuse in the northern part of Canada.

Reportedly, during the annual running of the bulls event at the Strathmore Stampede, a City-wide rodeo tradition, held since 2003, a bull went ballistic and charged at a male spectator, flinging him to the ground with its sharp pair of horns. As the man crumbled to the ground, the rampaging bull charged toward him once again and tried to inflict further damage. However, this was the moment that Aheer, wearing her cowboy hat, jumped from the fence and went toe-to-toe with the bull. For a good, four-five seconds, the bull refused to budge but Aheer stood there and continued to push the bull away. "It was like trying to push a car," said Aheer when quizzed about her attempt to move the bull. Soon, Aheer's perseverance paid off as she managed to drag the young man away from the clutches of the maniac bull as the crowd applauded her feat. If you ever wonder what kind of leader @LeelaAheer would be… Yesterday she grabbed a bull. Jumped right in front of it. Pushed it, to save someone who was stuck under. She did not hesitate one minute. This is my friend. And this is who I want as a leader#ableg #abpoli pic.twitter.com/MGRVonSlMV — Sarah Biggs (@sarahbyyc) August 1, 2022 × "I literally didn't think about it. It's a mom thing, I guess. I just jumped in front of the bull and tried to distract him." Aheer said when asked about her act of bravery. Fortunately, both the bull and the young man were safe after the accident, even though the latter had a lot of scratches and scrapes. According to local reports, the man had scooched under the bull which meant that the animal was not able to penetrate its horns, thereby minimizing the damage, which, otherwise could have been fatal.
