Achter, who resides in the community of Swift Current, responded to the contract by sending a thumbs-up emoji. However, in November, Achter failed to deliver the flax and the prices for the crop had surged by that time.&nbsp;

<h2>Dispute over emoji&nbsp;</h2>

Mickleborough and Achter got into a dispute over what is the meaning of the emoji. Referring to the previous contacts which were confirmed over a text message, the buyer suggested that the emoji meant Achter was agreeing to the terms mentioned in the contract.&nbsp;

However, Achter claimed that the emoji was an indication of the fact that he has received the contract in the text message.

“I deny that he accepted the thumbs-up emoji as a digital signature of the incomplete contract,” said Achter in an affidavit. “I did not have time to review the Flax Contract and merely wanted to indicate that I did receive his text message," he added.&nbsp;

In between the court proceedings, Achter’s lawyer raised an objection over a cross-examination of his client into the meaning of the thumbs-up emoji, stating that his client “is not an expert in emojis”.

Justice Timothy Keene, who even went on to refer to the definition of the symbol mentioned in dictionary.com, lamented that the case “led the parties to a far-flung search for the equivalent of the Rosetta Stone in cases from Israel, New York State and some tribunals in Canada, etc. to unearth what a 👍 emoji means”.

The government of Canada will not purchase advertisements on Facebook and Instagram as it faces a dispute over a new law on payment to online news publishers which has been opposed by the Meta-owned platforms, said Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez on Wednesday.

Last month, the Online News Act, or Bill C-18, was passed, which triggered Meta and Alphabet's Google to claim that they would stop providing access to news on their platforms in Canada.&nbsp;

The rules are being finalised by the government which requires the platforms to share some advertising revenue when the law gets implemented by the end of the year.&nbsp;

"Canada is going to continue to stand firm and ensure that if social media platforms and internet giants want to use media, that they actually ensure that they're paying their fair share for it," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Monteregie, Quebec.

However, the government still sees a path ahead and hopes to resolve the dispute and is hence, open to discussion with the platforms, said Rodriguez, who had introduced the legislation, while speaking to reporters in Ottawa.

<h2>Tighter regulations on internet giants</h2>

The government drafted the legislation after receiving calls from the media industry of Canada for the need for tighter regulations on internet giants to help news businesses recoup financial losses which they have suffered in the years as Google and Facebook continued to gain a greater share of the online advertising market.

Rodriguez said that 80 per cent of the revenue generated from advertisements in Canada, which was worth $7.5 billion in 2022, went to Google and Facebook, and the Liberal government wanted that the two social media platforms contribute to domestic journalism.

He added that the decision to suspend the government advertisements can cost Facebook and Instagram around $7.5 billion per year, he said.

Facebook "refused to discuss and they did not want to compensate the media accordingly and so we've decided to suspend advertising," Rodriguez stated while speaking alongside two of three Canadian opposition parties, which also have been supporting the legislation.

“Platforms benefit from the status quo. They benefit from the fact that there’s currently nothing forcing them to contribute to our Canadian news system. That status quo isn’t working. All we want, all Canadians want, is for these platforms to contribute their fair share," he added.&nbsp;

Sounding hopeful about reaching a compromise with Google, Rodriguez said that the government was convinced that "what Google is asking at this moment can be done."

Canada suspends advertisements on Facebook, Instagram in feud over new law

The secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), despite facing criticism and sparking outrage over its posters that targeted Indian diplomats, has terrorised to “besiege” Indian missions on Independence Day, according to a new report.

SFJ's legal counsel Gurpatwant Pannun released a video on Wednesday in which he made the latest threat referring to the plans of organising a 'Khalistan Freedom Rally' on Saturday, July 8, as per The Hindustan Times report.

“You just wait, this is a start. On August 15, the Sikh community is going to besiege every terror house that is an Indian embassy,” Pannun said.

The video was then further circulated by numerous newly created handles that appeared to be either operating from Pakistan or were pro-Pakistan.

The matter has now been brought to the notice of Canadian authorities by India. However, the threat is not only limited to India’s High Commission and two consulates in Canada but also encompasses the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and European nations, as it did with the rally that was conducted on June 8.

<h2>Lack of action against&nbsp;SFJ encouraging the group</h2>

As per the HT reports, a senior Indian official has expressed concerns over the absence of action against the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), like imposing a ban or declaring it a terrorist entity. That he said was encouraging SFJ.

With instances of grave attacks like arson at the Indian consulate in San Francisco, United States last week, and violation of the security perimeter of the Indian High Commission Ottawa on March 23 with smoke bombs used by pro-Khalistan protesters, the concern has already been elevated.

Pannun has made claims condemning India for the “assassination” of prominent SFJ figure Harjit Singh Nijjar on June 18 in the parking lot of a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), probing the killing, has not yet elucidated the motive behind it and is searching for the criminals.

As per Indian law enforcement, Nijjar was allegedly the head of the Khalistan Tiger Force and also faced multiple charges related to terrorism. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had also offered a reward of Rs 10 Lakh (12,126.94 US Dollars) for any information that could help in capturing him.

However, none of the charges against him were testified in the Canadian courts and SFJ has affirmed that it does not exercise violence.

Hours after the rumours of Pannun's death circulated on social media, he posted a video on Wednesday saying that the protests will be peaceful.

On January 8, 2020, Iran admitted that its military had targeted the Kyiv-bound Boeing 737-800 plane calling it a "disastrous mistake".

In their application to the court, the four countries said Iran had breached "a series of obligations" against the Montreal Convention, targeted at safeguarding the security of civilian air travel.

They said that Iran did not take all possible measures to avert the downing of Flight PS752 and also failed to conduct an impartial, transparent and fair criminal probe and prosecution.

They asked the court to "order full reparation for all injury caused" and to make Iran pay "full compensation to the applicants for the material and moral damages suffered by the victims and their families".

Iran should also return the belongings of the victims and publicly acknowledge its "internationally wrongful acts".

The majority of the victims of the incident who lost their lives were from the four countries, which created a coordination group aiming to hold Iran to account.

Iran, in a statement, had said that its forces accidentally shot down the Boeing 737 jet during the time when the tensions between Tehran and Washington were heightened.

A final report issued in the year 2021, held a misaligned radar and an error by an air defence operator responsible for the tragic incident.

Canada at the time said the report made "no attempt to answer critical questions about what truly happened".&nbsp;

New York Post has now reported that some health experts and residents are saying that number of patients this time is much higher, maybe even greater than 200.

Moreover, an unusually high number of cases have been seen in younger population. Typically, youngsters do not show symptoms of dementia or signs of other neurological problems.

"I am particularly concerned about the increase in numbers of young-onset and early-onset neurological syndrome,” said Dr Alier Marrero as quoted by The New York Post. Dr Marrero said this in a letter dated January 30, 2023 to &nbsp;New Brunswick’s chief medical officer and the chief federal public health officer.

“Over the past year, I have been following 147 cases, between the ages of 17 and 80 years old. Out of those, 57 are early-onset cases and 41 are young-onset cases,” the letter from Marrero reportedly said.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, there were nine deaths, as of 2021, attributed to the mysterious illness.&nbsp;

The government authorities were looking into the illness and were considering environmental toxins as a cause. However, the investigation was abruptly shut down in 2021.

“People who were part of this cluster displayed symptoms that varied significantly from case to case, and there was no evidence of a shared common illness or of a syndrome of unknown cause,” the government said in its final report. The government said that it was concluding its investigation.

However, many who are not part of the government authorities are still trying to look into the illness and think that the illness may be linked to pesticides used primarily in rural areas.

The Khalistani extremists are claiming that India was responsible for the killing of Hardeep Nijjar - one of the prominent secessionist faces.

The 45-year-old Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief&nbsp;&nbsp;was shot&nbsp;dead on June 18 by two unidentified men in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Surrey, Canada.

The protests are being organised by a proscribed organisation named Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which was responsible for the failed 'Khalistan Referendum'.&nbsp;

"We don't take this decision or its impacts lightly, and believe it's important to be transparent with Canadian publishers and our users as early as possible," it said.

The act outlines rules to force platforms such as Facebook and Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news publishers for their content, a step similar to a groundbreaking law passed in Australia in 2021.

The U.S. technology companies have said the proposals are unsustainable for their businesses. Google has argued&nbsp;Canada's law is broader than those in Australia and Europe, saying it puts a price on news story links displayed in search results and can apply to outlets that do not produce news.

"United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered," the agency said in a statement after parts of the wreckage were unloaded in eastern Canada.

Earlier in the day, the recovered debris was offloaded in eastern Canada, bringing to an end a difficult search-and-recovery operation.

That debris will now be taken on board a US Coast Guard cutter to a US port for further analysis, the organisation said.

"There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the Titan and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again," said the leader of the US investigation into the tragedy, Captain Jason Neubauer.

Debris from the Titan submersible which imploded, killing all five on board, was recovered and returned to land by a Canadian-flagged ship. The sub operated by OceanGate Expeditions was on a voyage to see the century-old wreck of the Titanic earlier this month. A report by the news agency Reuters mentioned that a video from the Canadian Broadcast Corporation carried footage from the harbour, which showed the nose of the submersible and some other shattered fragments.&nbsp;

The pieces were wrapped in a white tarp and were seen being pulled up by a crane off the Horizon Arctic vessel at St John's Harbour in Newfoundland. Reports mentioned that twisted chunks of the 22-foot submersible were brought ashore.&nbsp;

Some experts have previously said that the recovery of the debris will be crucial in the investigation to find out what led to the tragic implosion of the submersible, which killed five passengers, including the company OceanGate's CEO Stockton Rush, besides Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet.&nbsp;

When the officials announced that the search and rescue mission for the passengers was ended and those on board were "sadly lost", it was said that five major pieces were detected amid the debris around the Titanic site. A nose cone, outside the pressure hull, and a larger debris field were among them.&nbsp;

Pelagic Research, which operates the robotic vehicle, said in a statement: "Our team has successfully completed off-shore operations, but is still on mission and will be in the process of demobilization from the Horizon Arctic this morning." It declined to comment further, citing confidentiality reasons.&nbsp;

The company also said that they have been working around the clock now for 10 days and are facing physical and mental challenges during this operation. They said they are also anxious to finish the mission and return to their loved ones.

Iran stated international law has been breached by Canada by court rulings which asked Iranian assets to be given over to victims of attacks, which were blamed on Tehran-sponsored groups. &nbsp;

In a statement, the Hague-based ICJ said that the legal proceedings were launched by Iran against Canada on Tuesday "concerning alleged violations of its immunities" as a sovereign state.

"Canada has adopted and implemented a series of legislative, executive, and judicial measures against Iran and its property in breach of its international obligations," Iran stated in its filing to the court.

<h2>Compensation demanded</h2>

Compensation has been demanded by Iran from Canada for the "violation of its international obligations", and the ICJ has been asked to ask Ottawa to overrule all judgments against Tehran in Canadian courts.

"Iran respectfully requests the Court to adjudge and declare that by failing to respect the immunities of Iran and its property, Canada has violated its international obligations toward Iran," the country added.

As per reports, $13 million was awarded, as per the judgement, to the families of Americans who were killed in eight bombings or hostage-takings in Buenos Aires, Israel, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia from 1983 to 2002.

The affected students, numbering in the hundreds, claim ignorance of the forged admission letters and only discovered the issue when they faced scrutiny from border officials during their postgraduate work permit applications or permanent residence application processes. In response to the scandal, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced the suspension of pending deportations for the impacted Indian international students who alleged deception by Mishra and other fraudulent agents. Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino commended the Canada Border Services Agency's criminal investigators for their efforts in combating fraud while protecting legitimate students pursuing their studies.

The wreckage of the submersible, named Titan, was discovered on the seabed of the North Atlantic by a remotely operated underwater vehicle deployed by a Canadian search vessel. This find marked the conclusion of a five-day international rescue operation.

According to US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger, debris from Titan was scattered approximately 1,600 feet (488 meters) away from the bow of the Titanic wreck, at a depth of about 2-1/2 miles (4 km) beneath the surface.

Admiral Mauger stated that the debris indicated a "catastrophic implosion of the vehicle," implying that the 22-foot-long submersible collapsed and was crushed due to the immense hydrostatic pressure at that depth.
