Until a few days ago, it's fair to presume that few people in the United Kingdom, let alone the world, had heard of Sue Gray.

Her name is now in every newspaper, and she is a social media meme, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson's future in her hands.

Investigating an occasion where alcohol was served sounds like an acceptable assignment for her as a former publican.

Is it possible that Boris Johnson broke his own COVID regulations by attending a "bring your own wine" party in his own backyard?

That is what the senior civil servant has been tasked with discovering in a report due next week.

So, who is Sue Gray, dubbed "the person who runs" the UK by former cabinet minister Oliver Letwin?

Sue Gray, who is she?

Sue Gray, who is in her 60s, began working for the government after graduating from university and ascended through the ranks to the Cabinet Office, which provides support to the prime minister and ensures the smooth operation of government.

She earned a reputation for her tough demeanour and grasp of government matters, to the point where one former minister was told, "Our magnificent United Kingdom is actually totally managed by a lady named Sue Gray."

A former Cabinet Office adviser claimed in 2017: "Sue has been there for so long, she knows everything that anybody has ever done wrong."

Despite having started her career in the civil service, she took a break in the late 1980s to run a bar in Northern Ireland with her husband, country music musician Bill Conlon, according to British media.

She told the BBC, "I loved it at the moment, but I'd never do it again."

Gravitas: Another leaked email hits Boris Johnson

Some Conservative members of parliament (MPs) in the United Kingdom are set to send the letters of no confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the report probing lockdown-breaching parties in Downing Street is published, The Guardian reported.

In the UK, the leadership challenge can be triggered if 15 per cent of Conservative MPs write letters demanding a confidence vote to the chairman of the party's "1922 Committee", which represents lawmakers who have no government jobs.

As per the report, after the civil servant Sue Gray releases probe findings, some senior Tories might force a no-confidence vote in Johnson.

According to Interfax news agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Saturday said that Kremlin needed stable and predictable relations with Washington.

Meanwhile, Britain’s defence secretary Ben Wallace has said that it is “highly unlikely” that UK or other NATO allies would send troops to the eastern European country if it is invaded by neighbouring Moscow.

According to US intelligence, Russia has stationed about 70,000 troops near the border of Ukraine and has begun planning for a possible invasion as soon as early next year.

Boris Johnson's 'partygate': Timeline of a very British scandal

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is bracing for trouble as a report into his lockdown-breaching parties may soon spell major political trouble for him. Addition of police investigation into the entire issue has upped the stakes

The report from an investigation by senior civil servant Sue Gray is complete, but has not yet been submitted to Downing Street, the government said.

Gray, described as an iron-willed enforcer of probity in government, has been investigating revelations that Downing Street staff held frequent parties over the past two years while the rest of the country was in lockdown.

Opposition parties are insisting full publication of the report. Jhonson has been on the backfoot in British parliament for last many days.

The explosive confirmation that London's Metropolitan Police force has now started its own investigation could complicate the release of Gray's report.

Otherwise, according to senior Labour MP Chris Bryant on BBC radio, the public will "simply say this is a cover up".

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss affirmed her "100 percent" backing for Johnson despite the likelihood that he will become only the second prime minister, after Tony Blair, to face police questioning in office.

Truss, speaking to BBC television, said all sides should be more focused on issues such as Russia's threats to invade Ukraine.

But she acknowledged: "There clearly has to be a change of culture. The prime minister has said that mistakes were made, he's apologised for what has happened."

"I suspect we won't have much longer to wait for the Sue Gray report, where we can have a fuller view of exactly what happened," she added on BBC radio.

It was unclear whether Downing Street would release the report on Wednesday or later, with Johnson facing another grilling in parliament at the weekly joust of Prime Minister's Questions from noon (1200 GMT).

The prime minister has said that mistakes were made, he's apologised for what has happened." "I suspect we won't have much longer to wait for the Sue Gray report, where we can have a fuller view of exactly what happened," she added on BBC radio. It was unclear whether Downing Street would release the report on Wednesday or later, with Johnson facing another grilling in parliament at the weekly joust of Prime Minister's Questions from noon (1200 GMT). UK PM Boris Johnson opens inquiry into claims by MP that she got fired for being Muslim

It will be a make-or-break week for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a report on Downing Street parties during lockdown is set to be released.

The British PM has been facing the heat over the past one week after it was revealed that his Downing Street hosted multiple parties during the Covid lockdown period.

Many opposition MPs, including some from Johnson’s own Conservative Party, have been asking Johnson to resign after his “half-hearted” apology failed to soothe the tempers of lawmakers and the public.

Last week, one Conservative MP defected to the opposition Labour Party and many newspapers have reported rumours of more lawmakers demanding Johnson’s exit.

All of them are said to be waiting for the senior civil servant, Sue Grayl, to release the report, which would have findings on lockdown-breaking parties at Downing Street and elsewhere in government.

However, UK’s Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said that it was unlikely that the report would be fully disclosed and added that the amount of detail released publicly will be a matter for Boris Johnson.

Asked whether the public would be able to see Gray’s report in full, Raab told BBC One’s Sunday Morning programme, “Quite the way, the process for it, will be for the prime minister to decide. But … there will be full transparency. He has said he will come back to the Commons and make a statement, so there will be full scrutiny.”

Asked whether this meant it would be fully published, Raab said: “I’m not quite sure the shape and the form it will come, but the prime minister has been clear there will be full transparency around this, so that people can see. We would welcome that transparency and we need to learn the lessons.”

When he was asked whether Johnson would resign if the report found the PM to be lying, he said, “The code of conduct for ministers is very clear, that if you mislead parliament it’s a resigning matter.”

Johnson had defended his attendance at the party saying that it was a “work-related event” and that he wasn’t aware of Downing Street holding any parties.

Make-or-break week: UK Dy PM has this to say about Johnson's resignation

British Tory MP Nusrat Ghani has said that one among the many reasons of her being fired from her job role was her faith. She said that comments about her Muslim faith left her wondering why she was in politics as she alleged Boris Johnson declined to investigate them.

British Tory MP Nusrat Ghani levels serious allegations against PM Boris Johnson

William Wragg, who is a member of Boris Johnson's party and the chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee had accused No 10 of trying to "blackmail" Members of Parliament (MPs) seeking to oust the UK Prime Minister. He will now meet the police to discuss his allegations.

Wragg informed on Thursday that some Conservatives had faced intimidation and blackmail from government representatives because of their desire to topple Johnson in the wake of the "Partygate" scandal that has rocked the UK government.

In reply, Johnson told broadcasters on Thursday that he had neither seen nor heard any evidence to support Wragg's claims.

As per reports, Wragg will be meeting a Scotland Yard detective in the House of Commons early next week. The move is deemed crucial as it has raised the prospect of a police investigation.

"I stand by what I have said. No amount of gaslighting will change that. The offer of Number 10 to investigate is kind but I shall leave it to the experts. I am meeting the police early next week," he told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

In the latest development, The Guardian has reported that about a dozen Tory MPs have made allegations similar to Wragg's in the last few days to a colleague.

Chris Bryant, the Labour MP for the Rhondda said that he took the allegations very seriously. "I have even heard MPs alleging that the prime minister himself has been doing this," Bryant told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

"What I have said to all of those people is that that is misconduct in public office. The people who should be dealing with such allegations are the police."

"It is illegal. We are meant to operate as MPs without fear or favour. The allocation of taxpayer funding to constituencies should be according to need, not according to the need to keep the prime minister in his job," he added.

London's Metropolitan Police said on Saturday it could not comment on any specific planned meetings. "As with any such allegations, should a criminal offence be reported to the Met, it would be considered," a spokesman said.

William Wragg, who is a member of Boris Johnson's party and the chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee had accused No 10 of trying to "blackmail" Members of Parliament (MPs) seeking to oust the UK Prime Minister.

The people who should be dealing with such allegations are the police." "It is illegal. × (With inputs from agencies)
