In less than two weeks, all the remaining Covid restrictions will be removed in England, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday.

The current regulations, including the need to self-isolate after testing positive, were due to expire on March 24.

The prime minister said the move is part of the government’s 'Living with Covid' strategy.

"Providing the current encouraging trends in the data continue, it is my expectation that we will be able to end the last domestic restrictions, including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive—a full month early," the prime minister told MPs at the start of the Prime Minister Questions session in House of Commons.

Johnson said he hoped to do this as soon as the Commons returns from its upcoming recess on February 21.

The dramatic move comes as the Covid cases in the country have been ebbing after the Omicron surge and deaths have remained far below the fears of many experts.

“Mr Speaker I can tell the house today, that it is my intention to return on the first day after the half term recess to present our strategy for living with Covid,” Johnson said.

In a major blow to Boris Johnson, a photo of the UK Prime Minister purportedly holding a can of beer during his lockdown-breaching birthday party in 2020 has been submitted to the police, UK media has reported.

It is being claimed that the said photograph is among the 300 pictures that were submitted to the Metropolitan police by senior civil servant Sue Gray-led panel for their investigation into social gatherings which breached coronavirus regulations.

The latest findings are contradictory to the previous claims of Downing Street officials, who said that the staff “gathered briefly” at a surprise birthday celebration organised by his wife Carrie Johnson, and added that the PM only stayed for 10 minutes.

United Kingdom: Boris Johnson has made two key appointments to his downing street staff

UK Business Minister Kwasi Kwartend on Sunday, backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson to say that his ouster was not at all inevitable. Johnson has found himself under intense pressure to quit following lockdown parties at his residence during the pandemic

Increasing numbers of lawmakers from his own party are saying that he should quit

Charles Walker, a previously loyal senior Conservative lawmaker, told the Observer newspaper it was now "inevitable" that his party would remove Johnson from office.

"I don't see what he's seeing," Kwarteng told Sky News on Sunday.

Johnson has been fighting to save his job for weeks, saying he will learn from recent mistakes and move on.

But on Monday when he went to the House of Commons to apologise for lockdown parties that have angered the country, he also falsely accused the leader of the opposition of failing to prosecute a now-dead child sex abuser.

That not only appalled members of his own party but it led to the resignation of one of his most senior aides, and has led to reports that it split his cabinet of senior ministers, after the finance minister Rishi Sunak said pointedly that he would not have made such a remark.

Kwarteng, asked about the comment, said Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party, had apologised when he was director of public prosecutions for the organisation's failure to prosecute paedophile Jimmy Savile, a television celebrity. Starmer had not been involved in the decision however.

"The fact that he apologised suggests that he does, at some level, bear some responsibility," Kwarteng said. "I'm not saying that he had personal blame, he didn't, we were very clear about that.

"The prime minister clarified that position as well. But I think in the cut and thrust of debate, when people are talking about leadership and accountability, bringing up something that Sir Keir himself apologised for, seems reasonable."

'Meltdown in Downing Street': Five of Johnson's closest aides desert him, as he seeks a fresh start

At least 54 letters are needed to trigger a confidence vote. Apart from that a majority of Tory MPs—around 180—must vote against Johnson.

“Standards in public life matter. At this time, I can no longer support the PM,” Mangnall tweeted on Wednesday.

“His actions and mistruths are overshadowing the extraordinary work of so many excellent ministers and colleagues,” he said.

UK: Boris Johnson tries to moves on from talk of lockdown parties

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson attended a farewell party of a former aide, which was held at Downing Street, the Guardian has reported, adding that the police are now investigating it.

The media report has mentioned that the party was held during the strict post-Christmas lockdown when such gatherings were strictly banned across the country.

The event was held in Downing Street and was apparently for a senior policy adviser who is now a top civil servant, currently working in the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The report specially mentioned the use of prosecco during the event which was drunk by some staff members.

The United Kingdom Prime Minister is believed to have attended the event and had given a speech thanking the official for his/her work.

The event was reportedly held during England's third national coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown when the "stay at home" order was in place.

Meanwhile, Johnson apologised after a probe into lockdown-breaching parties at Downing Street found that such gatherings should never have taken place when there was a ban across the country.

Further, he vowed to bring about changes not only to his team but to the way he engages with his party, seeking to win over some who had threatened to try to oust him.

On Monday, Gray said she could only detail four of 16 events in question because of concerns about prejudicing a separate police investigation, which involves detectives looking into parties including one in Johnson's apartment above his office.

Johnson's office said Gray would be asked to update her report once the police investigation concluded and it would be published.

As quoted by The Guardian, a No 10 spokesperson said: "Given the police have said they are investigating a number of events, it would not be appropriate to comment further while the Met’s investigation is ongoing."

"But, at the end of the process, the prime minister will ask Sue Gray to update her work in light of what is found. He will publish that update. However, the prime minister is clear we must not judge an ongoing investigation and his focus now is on addressing the general findings," the spokesperson added.

Johnson made a statement and answered questions for almost two hours in parliament on Monday afternoon following the report's publication. He apologised again and pledged to make changes at his office.

"I want to say sorry. I get it and I will fix it," he said in a raucous debate, when he was challenged by some Conservative lawmakers.

Britain's Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of "dragging everybody into the gutter."

Talking about the 'partygate' scandal, he said the fact that 12 of the 16 parties, including one in Johnson's own flat, were subject to a police probe was "a mark of shame".

Starmer also lambasted Johnson for repeating a false claim in parliament that he had failed to prosecute one of Britain's most notorious sex offenders.

"It is a ridiculous slur peddled by right-wing trolls," Starmer told Sky News, accusing Johnson of debasing his office.

It comes after Johnson said that Starmer failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile during his time as Director of Public Prosecutions, a role for which he later received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, "I think Keir Starmer should be subject to scrutiny across the board including the calls he's taken during this pandemic."

Despite being limited in what she could say, Gray still managed a stinging rebuke to the prime minister's authority, contrasting government officials' behaviour with the sacrifices made by the public during the pandemic.

"Too little thought" had been given about how appropriate boozy events were and would be seen as others stuck to the rules, unable to comfort sick and dying loved ones with Covid.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s wife Carrie reportedly organised a birthday party for her husband in June 2020 when the nation was under lockdown, British newspaper The Telegraph has reported.

It is being claimed that Carrie asked a Downing Street official to make sure other staff got together to celebrate the PM’s 56th birthday.

The disclosers were made after the officials previously denied Carrie’s involvement in organising the lockdown-breaching party, which was reportedly attended by at least 30 people.

This report also contradicts an official from Downing Street denying that the gathering even took place in the first place.

According to ITV News, the birthday gathering was held in Cabinet Room No. 10 on June 19, 2020, and even attended by the Johnsons’ interior designer, Lulu Lytle.

Following the revelations, several British media claim that Carrie would now be asked to depose before the Sue Gray-led panel, which is now probing eight of the 17 gatherings which took place between May 2020 and April 2021.

The latest findings would blow a heavy dent in Johnson’s credibility who is currently embattled over organising parties when the nation was battling the first phase of the Coronavirus.

There have been growing calls from the opposition and even from the ruling Conservative Party, asking Johnson to step down.

Senior civil servant Sue Gray is expected to disclose the report this week, but the timing of the release is not known, as the Metropolitan Police, which is also investigating the case, asked the top official to make minimal references to the parties in her report to avoid prejudicing its inquiry.

The police inquiry is understood to be still ongoing, but Gray may be forced to decide whether to delay her report or strip out key details, reported Mirror.
