<p>A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud also trashed the submission that the screening of the movie may cause serious threat to life, property and law and order.</p>

<p>&quot;Maintaining law and order is not our job. That is the job of the state. Prayer rejected,&quot; the bench said while refusing to accord urgent hearing on the fresh plea filed by lawyer M L Sharma.</p>

<p>The lawyer has sought cancellation of the U/A certificate granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to Deepika Padukone-starrer &#39;Padmaavat&#39; on various grounds including the provisions of the Cinematograph Act.</p>

<p>&quot;Yesterday, we have passed a reasoned order,&quot; the bench said adding that, once CBFC has granted the certificate, there was no scope of any interference.</p>

<p>The apex court had yesterday paved the way for the nationwide release of movie &#39;Padmaavat&#39; on January 25 by staying the ban on the screening of the film in Gujarat and Rajasthan.</p>

<p>The court had also restrained other states from issuing any such notification or order banning the screening of the film.</p>

<p>Some time ago, I was not at all alarmed and shocked to read Sanjay Dutt&#39; s confession that he wanted to break a leg (hers, not his own) when his elder daughter Trishala expressed a desire to become an actress. On the contrary, I was impressed by his honesty.</p>

<p>Dutt knows better than most what young heroines have to go through in this film industry.</p>

<p>And the way heroes talk about their leading ladies would make even the most misogynistic pervert blush. I remember a top leading lady of the 1960s telling me about this he-man hero, a pukka ladies&#39; man who would sit with his cronies on the set discussing his amorous exploits. One of them would turn the pages of a film magazine and point quizzically at the picture of every heroine featured. The he-man would nod in the affirmative or shake his head in the negative to indicate whether he had &#39;done&#39; her or not.</p>

<p>Things haven&#39;t changed. For all the talk of gender equality among the heroes, there is still that backroom boys&#39; talk about women that goes on in secret. There is a top-notch action hero of today, married to one of the most distinguished actresses of our times, who is in the habit of discussing lurid details of his heroines&#39; bedroom activities with him. Who needs porn when you can get it straight from stud&#39;s mouth?</p>

<p>Wait, don&#39;t wince yet. There are so many stories I&#39;ve heard about Dutt&#39;s adventures with leading ladies. I remember once, when he was shooting in Kolkata, everyone in the City of Joy was talking about how he vanished with the leading lady behind his vanity van for a good 45 minutes. Not inside the van, mind you, but behind. For all we know, Sanju Baba might have been discussing the script with your heroine.</p>

<p>We really don&#39;t need to get judgmental about what grown-up, consenting adults do when they&#39;re not working. But yes, many film families are wary of letting their daughters become part of the film industry.</p>

<p>I don&#39;t know whether Dharmendra threatened to break his eldest daughter&#39;s leg to keep her completely out of the limelight. The fact is, while the two sons - Sunny and Bobby Deol - were groomed to follow in their father&#39;s footsteps, we&#39;ve never seen Dharmedra&#39;s daughter from his first marriage in even a photograph.</p>

<p>I know for a fact that Dharam ji - a gem of a man in other ways but not quite the epitome of the liberal Indian male - didn&#39;t&#39; want his daughters from his second marriage with Hema Malini to become actresses. But Hemaji is made of sterner stuff than many star-wives who simply comply with their husband&#39;s patriarchal decisions.</p>

<p>I know for a fact that even today, girls from film families have to fight prolonged battles with their parents before getting into movies. Please note, Shah Rukh Khan&#39;s son is being readied for stardom. His daughter, we are told, is not keen on a movie career. And, I wonder if Boney Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan&#39;s daughters would be poised for a movie career if they didn&#39;t have persuasive, assertive actresses (Amrita Singh and Sridevi) for moms.</p>

<p>Before I leave you with that sobering thought, I must tell you about an incident that happened when Nawazuddin Siddiqui came home for dinner. His baby girl was just born and he proudly showed me her picture.</p>

Indian politicians have been infamous for promoting their children up the ladder but trust Bollywood to popularise the term 'nepotism'. However, this was not the only word that made headlines as the film industry had its moment of reckoning with the Harvey Weinstein scandal exploding in Hollywood and terms such as pay disparity and feminism becoming a part of the debate in Bollywood. When actor Kangana Ranaut called director Karan Johar "the flagbearer of nepotism", little did she know that it will replace its colloquial Hindi counterpart, 'bhai-bhateejawaad'. Similar to last year's buzzword "intolerance" that became a hashtag, "nepotism" was the word of 2017 for the industry. Karan gave it back to Kangana's volley and the chain reaction began, with - outsiders or star kids - being asked for comments related to the newest entrant in the lingo of the film industry. From Shah Rukh Khan, Varun Dhawan, Deepika Padukone to Alia Bhatt, almost every celebrity had one nepotism-related question waiting to be answered at media interactions. While male stars have ruled for decades, female actors have also started asserting themselves when it comes to equal pay and experimenting with roles, making the word 'feminism' popular, but as Priyanka Chopra put it, the phrase is still misunderstood. "There is movement but it is very nominal. We need to work so much more. In our country and across the globe, girls are treated as secondary citizen. They face violence and abuse everywhere. And feminism is a way to control that situation, but it has become a negative term," Priyanka told PTI. The cinema too reflected this change with women-centric films such as Lipstick Under My Burkha, Tumhari Sulu, Secret Superstar and Mom doing well at the box office this year. In Hollywood, Weinstein, once the nurturer of independent cinema, became synonymous with sexual harassment after the New York Times broke the biggest story of this year in October by alleging multiple sexual allegations against the now-disgraced media mogul. The expose was followed by a detailed piece by journalist Ronan Farrow for The New Yorker. Emboldened by the articles, more than 50 women, including powerful A-listers from Hollywood such as Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong'o, Salma Hayek, Uma Thurman, Heather Graham, Eva Green, Lea Seydoux, came forward to share their horrific stories of sexual harassment at the hands of the producer. One of the most powerful men in Hollywood once, Weinstein's career is over and he has been thrown out of the company that he co-founded. The scandal had a domino effect in Hollywood with many powerful men such as Brett Ratner, James Toback, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Pive, Mark Schwahn facing similar career-ending accusations. A tumultuous, but an equally introspective year is nearing its end. The first award ceremony of 2018 will take the issue of sexual harassment head on as both women and men of Hollywood have pledged to appear in black to address the ugly, dark side of the business. Rani Mukerji has always had a strong connect with the audiences and the actor believes people find her relatable because she never brings her real- life persona on screen. In her new film Hichki, which is her first after the birth of her daughter Adira, Rani plays the role of a woman who does not let her speech disability come in the way of achieving her dream of becoming a teacher. "Whenever I play a character in a film, I try to remove Rani Mukerji and emotionally connect with the part. If a person sitting in a cinema hall can forget who you really are and believes you are the character, that's the real victory for an actor," Rani told PTI in an interview. "I want people to forget that they are watching a Rani Mukerji film and get invested in the character," she added. The actor said she has always been attracted to complex roles and this was one of the main reasons to accept Hichki. In the film, Rani plays a woman with Tourette syndrome, a condition that forces an individual to make involuntary repetitive movements or sounds. "For somebody to take their weakness and turn it into strength... It holds a positive message. I truly believe that all of us have a weakness that we know but we try to camouflage it as we have to put up a hard exterior in front of the world. If one can make their weakness their strength, the world can become a good place." Rani is not new to playing challenging roles. She played a deaf and blind woman in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black. The actor said one has to be careful with such roles as there is always a probability to look like a caricature. "It is with all my films. I take special care because it may become a caricature. There is always a thin line. I have been taking feedback on this film from day one. After every shot, I ensured that if I do the tick, it should appear natural. I would constantly check with Siddharth (director). It was important to look authentic." The movie, produced by Yash Raj Films, also highlights the topic of literacy and Rani said the right to education cannot be gender specific. "Education is the right of every human being, irrespective of the gender. In India, a state like Kerala has the highest percentage of literacy, we should take that as an example. <p>The movie is reportedly based on late Shiv Sena founder and leader Balasaheb Thackeray.</p>

<p>&#39;Thackeray&#39; is&nbsp;directed by Abhijit Panse and scripted by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut.</p>

<p>While the first promotional posters of the biopic were released by Uddhav Thackeray, the project was officially launched earlier today in an event in Mumbai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interestingly, TV movie <em>Front of the Class</em>, starring Jimmy Wolks, Treat Williams and Patricia Heaton was also about Tourette&#39;s Syndrome. Based on a true story, the film had Jimmy Wolks playing a gifted teacher who suffers from the syndrome.&nbsp;<br />

Both the trailers are quite similar but while Mukerji&#39;s <em>Hichki </em>is about a&nbsp;Teacher and her students, Front of The Class focussed on the boy with the disorder and his journey&nbsp;into adulthood.</p>
