<p>The actor, whose recent films <em>Dangal</em>&nbsp;and <em>Secret Superstar</em>&nbsp;focused on female empowerment, also believes that the issues are directly linked to patriarchy.</p>

<p>&quot;I think sexual harassment is a very sad thing to happen to anyone, irrespective of what your sex is. Sexual harassment is just not on,&quot; he said when asked about the Harvey Weinstein case.<br />

Such cases, he said, happened not just in the world of films, but in other areas, too.</p>

<p>&quot;I understand that people are free to be romantically involved with whoever they want. But you cannot pressure a person into being with you physically. It happens not only in films but in all walks of life and is very unfortunate,&quot; Aamir, who is currently shooting for <em>Thugs of Hindostan</em>&nbsp;in Thailand, told PTI in an exclusive telephonic interview.</p>

<p>The New York Times and The New Yorker took the lid off Weinstein&#39;s history of sexual abuse, encouraging prominent women such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan to open up about the disgraced producer. Aamir said sexual harassment should not be looked into isolation as it is connected to larger issues of how gender roles have been defined in society.</p>

<p>The actor highlighted issues that women face in India in his TV show <em>Satyamev Jayate</em>. In <em>Secret Superstar</em>, he said, he went a step forward by portraying a girl who asserts her independence and helps her mother do the same.<br />
&quot;I am hoping that things will change in the future for the better. It takes time both for the people and the society to change.&quot;<br />

Women&#39;s issues, he said, span a big canvas.&quot;When we look at women&#39;s issues, it is not just about female foeticide and domestic violence, which are huge issues. But even in day-to-day life, women sometimes find that they are not in the possession of their own decisions,&quot; he said.<br />

A woman may not be sexually harassed or face domestic violence, but there may be a host of other issues.<br />

&quot;She may still be with a man who wants to control her and that is equally disturbing. It is really about the fundamental independence of a person, irrespective of your sex.&quot;</p>

<p><em>Secret Superstar</em>, starring <em>Dangal</em>&nbsp;actor Zaira Wasim in the lead role, may have been seen by some as a risky business venture in the formula-driven film industry, but Aamir, who has been rewriting the rules of the box office, said he felt strongly about the subject.<br />

The movie has not only done good business in India but has also opened well in countries such as Taiwan.<br />

<p>Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2018 opened Wednesday night with the coming together of artists from around the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>British actor Patrick Stewart, famous for&nbsp;his role as Professor X in &quot;X-Men&quot; was seen along with Indian films&#39;&nbsp;actor Irrfan Khan and renowned Egypt&#39;s director Wahid Hamed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 14th edition of the festival will be featuring 140 movies from 51 countries with a focus on regions like the Middle East and North Africa,&nbsp;from Iran to Syria, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories.</p>

<p>On the opening night yesterday, two-time Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett walked in a bright coloured dress with Egyptian film and TV star Yusra. Blanchett received&nbsp;an honorary&nbsp;award for her widely acclaimed performances.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last night, DIFF honoured&nbsp;Egypt&#39;s Wahid Hamed, the screenwriter behind the 2006 film adaptation of &quot;The Yaacoubian Building&quot;, with a lifetime achievement award, along with both Khan and Stewart.</p>

<p>Hamed, known as a pioneer of Arab cinema, has a long history of battling censorship. For over a decade, he fought for his political drama &quot;Al-Baree&quot; (The Innocent) to make it to the silver screen which was finally released in 1997.&nbsp;</p>

Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2018 opened Wednesday night with the coming together of artists from around the world. British actor Patrick Stewart, famous for his role as Professor X in "X-Men" was seen along with Indian films' actor Irrfan Khan and renowned Egypt's director Wahid Hamed. The 14th edition of the festival will be featuring 140 movies from 51 countries with a focus on regions like the Middle East and North Africa, from Iran to Syria, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories. On the opening night yesterday, two-time Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett walked in a bright coloured dress with Egyptian film and TV star Yusra. Dubai International Film Festival: Cate Blanchett, Irrfan Khan, Patrick Stewart honoured

<p>It is the time we examined the society we have created before we invoke the rather trite argument of dynastic rule to stridently criticise the Gandhis and the Congress. No doubt, the dynasty is antithetical to democratic politics. Yet, it is also true that dynastic succession is the norm outside the Indian political realm as well. Its sheer pervasiveness explains why people dismiss outright the hypocritical media outcry against dynastic succession to routinely vote paterfamilias to power, in the state as well at the Centre.</p>

<p>Among the media personalities, arguably the most vocal critics of dynastic succession &ndash; and the Gandhis &ndash; are two stalwarts who are guilty of what they rail against. One of them is considered the diadem of Indian journalism &ndash; he became an editor at a young age, launched a classy newspaper, joined the Congress briefly, returned to journalism and now heads a weekly newspaper in which his son is an associate editor. The other acquired from a generous industrialist, now deceased, a newspaper more than a century old. He is a member of parliament and his son is now the newspaper&rsquo;s managing editor, presumably being groomed to take over from his father.</p>

<p>It is true the roles of political parties are remarkably different from those of newspapers. It is also possible the children of these two luminaries are prodigiously talented. It is conceivable their fathers, immune to the irresistible tug of paternal love, saw in them qualities they couldn&rsquo;t in anyone who could step into their posts. Such arguments, though, echo precisely the ones the Congressmen mouth to justify the assigning of party leadership to Rahul Gandhi. He is astonishingly talented, even nonpareil, Congressmen declare earnestly.</p>

<p>In contrast to the Congress, the two illustrious editors run private operations and enjoy an unassailable right to choose who oversees them. Nevertheless, for many in the profession, it could well appear as examples of powerful fathers subverting the idea of meritocracy, given their inevitable role in the appointment of their children.</p>

<p>Might it not have been better for them to have designations which did not vouch for their journalistic excellence and which did not indicate to others that there is &ldquo;space for eminence&rdquo; in the two organisations, &ldquo;but none for pre-eminence&rdquo;? (The words in quotes belong to one of the two who used it to criticise the appointment of Rahul Gandhi as the vice-president of the Congress.) To what extent is the ethos of the two media organisations any different from the Congress whose members claim they are entitled to run their party as they desire? And to think the media isn&rsquo;t just a profit-making enterprise but the watchdog of democracy!</p>

<p>Dynastic succession dominates the realm of religion as well. As you enter through the imposing gates of Delhi&rsquo;s Jama Masjid, from the Chandni Chowk side, you will read written on a board, in a reverential tone, that the descendants of the Bukhari family have been the Imams of the historic mosque for 13 generations, beginning from 1656. Who&rsquo;s to tell them that the idea of the hereditary imam is in gross violation of Islam, which decrees his selection through consultation and consensus?</p>

<p>Similarly, innumerable hallowed temples of India have the tradition of hereditary priests, usually belonging to the Brahmin caste, presiding over them. In 2006, the Tamil Nadu government of M Karunanidhi issued an order abrogating the unwritten principle of hereditary, familial succession to the priesthood, which was also opened to non-Brahmin castes. Obviously, the momentous nature of the order, irrespective of its eventual efficacy, was delightfully ironical, for Karunanidhi, too, acquiesced into the dynastic principle in politics.</p>

<p>Or take the scions of illustrious business families. Irrespective of their abilities, children often inherit companies their fathers or grandfathers established and in which ordinary shareholders are today heavily invested. Think of a businessman, owning a substantial share in an Indian corporation, who voluntarily chose to overlook his or her children at the time of passing the baton. Are we not acquainted with the phenomenon of doctors boasting flourishing clinics paying massive donation fees to ensure their children, unable to qualify for admission to government medical colleges, acquire the mandatory MBBS degree to take over from them?</p>

<p>At least, unlike editor-owners, priests and businessmen, the great political families of India can claim that they have to at least periodically pass the electoral test to acquire power. It is an argument Bollywood too could cite to justify their dynasties. Though children from these families don&rsquo;t have to struggle for a foothold in the Hindi film industry, the longevity of their career depends on their ability to satisfy the audience. Nevertheless, their presence in Bollywood, as is true of all dynasties in every field, concentrates power in a few, skews and stifles competition. This is true of even classical music, whose practitioners can narrate the debilitating impact ordinary children of extraordinary parents have had on the talented.</p>

<p>India&rsquo;s propensity to spawn dynasties testifies to the persistence of our feudal mindset, still intact due to our unconscionable socio-economic inequalities and the inherited ethos of our caste system, consequently ensuring the <em>raja-</em><em>praja</em> type of relationship thrives in different modern avatars. It is through the bridging of these inequalities that we can send dynasties packing, not through hurling blunted barbs at the Gandhis and others even though we are as guilty as they are.</p>

<p>For a TV star, <em>Firangi</em> is an ambitious project. Kapil Sharma&#39;s second big outing at the movies has him playing a do-gooder, slow-witted orderly of a British Officer in 1920&#39;s Punjab. Sharma turns producer for the period film and one can see how desperate he is to come out of his set image of a comic. Which is why <em>Firangi </em>is an ambitious film for the stand-up comic-turned-actor. It&#39;s a gamble that Sharma plays with but the result is not necessarily a good one.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
In love with Sragi (Ishita Dutta ), Sharma&#39;s character Manga wants to win her and her family over and get married. Sharma&#39;s boss, British Officer Daniel though wants the village to be evacuated as he wants to set&nbsp;up a liquor factory there in partnership with the local king Inderjeet (Kumud Mishra) While the King and Daniel want to use Manga as their pawn against the villagers, Manga wants to be other side and win his love.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, on paper, the story may have looked good but implementing on the big screen is a whole new ball game. The plot is oversimplified, the climax has a hilarious nationalism angle to it and one can&#39;t decide as to which genre the film falls into. The narrative keeps oscillating between comedy and drama in 160 minutes of its runtime.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Sharma, who rose to superstardom on television because of his comedy show, tries hard to step out of his comfort zone. Which in itself is a blunder. He is still new to films and ideally should be doing what he does best. But what Firangi gives us is a straight face Kapil Sharma who tries hard to romance a much younger looking Ishita Dutta. Their scenes together lack any chemistry and they look rather unconvincing as a couple. In fact, Dutta barely has anything to do in the film and is almost missing in the greater part of second half. Sharma also ropes in Anjjan&nbsp;Srivastav and Rajesh Sharma- two versatile actors- but they too are let down due to poor writing. The only person who shines in this sordid film is Kumud Mishra as the corrupt King but he alone can&#39;t make the film good.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<em>Firangi </em>ultimately suffers because of poor writing and poor editing. It could have been easily half an hour shorter and the screenplay could have been dealt a bit maturely. It is also sad that the writers do not use Sharma&#39;s quick wit to their advantage and one can see the comedian spark only in few scenes.&nbsp;<br />

Firangi suffers because of poor writing and poor editing

For a TV star, Firangi is an ambitious project. Kapil Sharma's second big outing at the movies has him playing a do-gooder, slow-witted orderly of a British Officer in 1920's Punjab. Sharma turns producer for the period film and one can see how desperate he is to come out of his set image of a comic. Which is why Firangi is an ambitious film for the stand-up comic-turned-actor. It's a gamble that Sharma plays with but the result is not necessarily a good one. In love with Sragi (Ishita Dutta ), Sharma's character Manga wants to win her and her family over and get married. Sharma's boss, British Officer Daniel though wants the village to be evacuated as he wants to set up a liquor factory there in partnership with the local king Inderjeet (Kumud Mishra) While the King and Daniel want to use Manga as their pawn against the villagers, Manga wants to be other side and win his love. Now, on paper, the story may have looked good but implementing on the big screen is a whole new ball game. The plot is oversimplified, the climax has a hilarious nationalism angle to it and one can't decide as to which genre the film falls into. The narrative keeps oscillating between comedy and drama in 160 minutes of its runtime. Sharma, who rose to superstardom on television because of his comedy show, tries hard to step out of his comfort zone. Which in itself is a blunder. He is still new to films and ideally should be doing what he does best. But what Firangi gives us is a straight face Kapil Sharma who tries hard to romance a much younger looking Ishita Dutta. Their scenes together lack any chemistry and they look rather unconvincing as a couple. In fact, Dutta barely has anything to do in the film and is almost missing in the greater part of second half. Sharma also ropes in Anjjan Srivastav and Rajesh Sharma- two versatile actors- but they too are let down due to poor writing. The only person who shines in this sordid film is Kumud Mishra as the corrupt King but he alone can't make the film good. Firangi ultimately suffers because of poor writing and poor editing. It could have been easily half an hour shorter and the screenplay could have been dealt a bit maturely. It is also sad that the writers do not use Sharma's quick wit to their advantage and one can see the comedian spark only in few scenes. So, is the film all bad. Not quite. Names such as Kevin Spacey, James Toback, Brett Ratner, among others have also joined the infamous list.<br />

In Bollywood, Irrfan Khan was the first actor to come forward and share his story of how he was asked to compromise for work in his struggling days.&nbsp;Radhika says as &quot;more and more women&quot; are opening up about their experience, it is important to have a platform where complaints can be addressed.<br />

<p>Saaho is directed by Sujeeth and the music is by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.</p>
