<p>Sachin: A Billion Dreams follows a structure that is not a documentary yet a film with docu-like narration.&nbsp;Sachin fan or not, the movie brings forth the emotion that every Indian felt when Sachin came to bat. Directed by Emmy-nominated James Erskine, it is definitely an experiment when it comes to our box office.</p>

<p><strong>What&rsquo;s it about</strong></p>

<p>Well, you know the story&hellip; it&rsquo;s about the fantastic journey of Sachin Tendulkar from the time when he was a mischievous kid, to that moment when he bid farewell to cricket and left many in tears. His childhood is shown through a dramatic representation, through actors who play his little self, as well as his family and coach, Ramakant Achrekar. Once he enters professional cricket, rest of the movie is told through a series of snippets and real footage, narrated by none other than the God of Cricket himself.</p>

<p><strong>What&rsquo;s hot</strong></p>

<p>It&rsquo;s really strange that it took a foreigner to coach India to its World Cup win in 2011. Similarly, it also feels weird that it took a foreigner to make a movie on Sachin Tendulkar, and in the process, make the best movie on cricket &ndash; the sport. So let me say it, while Sachin may be a hero to billions, James Erskine&rsquo;s taut direction is the hero of the film. Not only has he captured the spirit of cricket and its effect on India through Sachin&rsquo;s journey, he also makes sure that you don&rsquo;t ever feel that it is a documentary. Rather, you feel that you are a part of the journey, or simply putting in better words, you are reliving the best part of your childhood. If you are a &rsquo;90s kid and have breathed cricket like me, you will understand what I mean. What I liked the best about Sachin: A Billion Dreams is that it is not entirely about Sachin. It&rsquo;s also a journey of Indian cricket. It&rsquo;s also the story of his teammates and above all it is a celebration of his fans, who have cheered him, booed him but stayed with him throughout his career.</p>

<p>Some of the best moments to cheer for, during the film, were not even about Sachin. Perhaps it&rsquo;s that wicket of Aamir Sohail that Venkatesh Prasad flicked during the 1996 World Cup, or when Laxman and Dravid guided India to a historic win in the 2001 series against Australia, or Dhoni&rsquo;s iconic six that helped us win the World Cup. Sachin has not made it all about himself. But through these moments, he made us realise that Cricket is his everything, and sometimes it even came before his family. So when he talks about the infamous match-fixing scandal, you can feel the pain of betrayal he felt over certain colleagues. There are also many interesting tidbits about his life and career that you would easily lap up. Like, do you know which song Sachin always listens to when he feels down? Yes, the film answers it!</p>

<p>But it&rsquo;s his family moments that gives the movie its heartwarming appeal. The film begins with videos showing Sachin holding his kids after their birth. This itself indicates how important his family is to him. Be it his cheesy love story with wife Anjali, who stood with him through the bleakest of times, or his emotional state when his father passed away on the eve of World Cup &rsquo;99 &ndash; it&rsquo;s these moments that make us realise that the God is as human as any of us. Only he has used his adversities to rise up again like a phoenix. If there are enough moments to cheer about, there are also a few moments that will leave you teary-eyed.</p>

<p>Coming to technical values, both the editing and cinematography are top-notch and help make the movie an engaging watch throughout. The monkey-gate incident is completely ignored. Also, Sachin never reveals how it was to be playing under Ganguly, Dravid and Dhoni, after his rather unsuccessful stints as the skipper of the Indian cricket team.</p>

Sachin: A Billion Dreams follows a structure that is not a documentary yet a film with docu-like narration. Sachin fan or not, the movie brings forth the emotion that every Indian felt when Sachin came to bat. Directed by Emmy-nominated James Erskine, it is definitely an experiment when it comes to our box office. What’s it about Well, you know the story… it’s about the fantastic journey of Sachin Tendulkar from the time when he was a mischievous kid, to that moment when he bid farewell to cricket and left many in tears. His childhood is shown through a dramatic representation, through actors who play his little self, as well as his family and coach, Ramakant Achrekar. Once he enters professional cricket, rest of the movie is told through a series of snippets and real footage, narrated by none other than the God of Cricket himself. What’s hot It’s really strange that it took a foreigner to coach India to its World Cup win in 2011. Similarly, it also feels weird that it took a foreigner to make a movie on Sachin Tendulkar, and in the process, make the best movie on cricket – the sport. So let me say it, while Sachin may be a hero to billions, James Erskine’s taut direction is the hero of the film. Not only has he captured the spirit of cricket and its effect on India through Sachin’s journey, he also makes sure that you don’t ever feel that it is a documentary. Rather, you feel that you are a part of the journey, or simply putting in better words, you are reliving the best part of your childhood. If you are a ’90s kid and have breathed cricket like me, you will understand what I mean. What I liked the best about Sachin: A Billion Dreams is that it is not entirely about Sachin. It’s also a journey of Indian cricket. It’s also the story of his teammates and above all it is a celebration of his fans, who have cheered him, booed him but stayed with him throughout his career. Some of the best moments to cheer for, during the film, were not even about Sachin. Perhaps it’s that wicket of Aamir Sohail that Venkatesh Prasad flicked during the 1996 World Cup, or when Laxman and Dravid guided India to a historic win in the 2001 series against Australia, or Dhoni’s iconic six that helped us win the World Cup. Sachin has not made it all about himself. But through these moments, he made us realise that Cricket is his everything, and sometimes it even came before his family. So when he talks about the infamous match-fixing scandal, you can feel the pain of betrayal he felt over certain colleagues. There are also many interesting tidbits about his life and career that you would easily lap up. Like, do you know which song Sachin always listens to when he feels down? Yes, the film answers it! But it’s his family moments that gives the movie its heartwarming appeal. The film begins with videos showing Sachin holding his kids after their birth. This itself indicates how important his family is to him. Be it his cheesy love story with wife Anjali, who stood with him through the bleakest of times, or his emotional state when his father passed away on the eve of World Cup ’99 – it’s these moments that make us realise that the God is as human as any of us. Only he has used his adversities to rise up again like a phoenix. If there are enough moments to cheer about, there are also a few moments that will leave you teary-eyed. Coming to technical values, both the editing and cinematography are top-notch and help make the movie an engaging watch throughout. <p>Being the products of two very different film industries, and having been released months apart from each other, these films are not competing with each other on any level. On the contrary, both are parts of the same unfolding story of Indian entertainment industries&rsquo; survival strategies in the present time. An important element of the story is the search for new markets. The success of both films suggests that dubbing is an important strategy for expanding beyond domestic markets.</p>

<p>Dubbing films into other languages is a well-established practice in India in general and South India in particular. Paidipaala, one of the leading authorities in the Telugu cinema industry, points out that roughly 2300 films dubbed from other languages were released in Telugu alone till 2010. This figure accounts for close to one-third of the total number of films released in that language. He also notes that the practice of dubbing films from one Indian language into another dates back to the 1930s. Therefore, one can say that dubbed films are almost as old as the talkie itself in India.</p>

<p>Till the 1990s, much of the dubbing traffic in the industry was among the four major south Indian languages, namely, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Dubbing into and from Hindi was rare. The success of the Hindi dubbed version of Roja, directed by Mani Ratnam in 1992, secured national recognition for the film&rsquo;s director. However, it was not Mani Ratnam&rsquo;s hit but the entry of Hollywood into the picture that disrupted the steady state economics of dubbing.</p>

<p>The viewers of independent India grew up watching Hollywood and other imported films in English, a language most of them never understood. Of course, lack of comprehension of English did not prevent Indian viewers from claiming Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Sylvester Stallone as their idols. At the same time, the share of international films at the Indian box office remained to be only a tiny fraction. This situation, however, changed with the release of Jurassic Park (1993) in India in 1994. Film researcher Nitin Govil points out in his book, <em>Orienting Hollywood: A Century of Film Culture Between Los Angeles and Bombay,</em>&nbsp;that Jurassic Park was released in India&nbsp;with 110 prints&mdash;an impressive number for those days. Of these, 82 prints were in Indian languages.</p>

Interestingly, it was enterprising Tamil filmmakers who made the earliest attempts to emulate Hollywood&rsquo;s saturation release strategy on the national scale. Much of the credit for the replication of Hollywood&rsquo;s strategy goes to Rajnikanth, whose 2007 Tamil film Sivaji did so well in the original Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions that a Hindi version was released in 2010. Needless to add, that version too did well at the box office. S. Shankar, the director of Sivaji, teamed up with Rajnikanth to make Enthiran, which was simultaneously released in Tamil and Telugu and Hindi as well.</p>

<p>Enthiran, or Robot&mdash;the Hindi dubbed version, was a game changer: it was perhaps the first film released after the 1950s to have competed at the box office with the top-line productions of different languages across the country. In Karnataka, where there is an unofficial ban on dubbing into Kannada, all three versions of the film were released. It is not difficult to see how much the two Baahubali films owe to the pioneering efforts of the Rajnikant-Shankar duo. Indeed, productions on the scale of Baahubali could not&nbsp;have been attempted if it wasn&rsquo;t for the possibility of tapping into markets that are opened up by dubbing.</p>

<p>From the 1990s onwards, the Mumbai industry too started expanding its markets. However, its focus was largely on overseas viewers, and justifiably so because they usually pay a much higher price per ticket. Notwithstanding the success of a few films like Chennai Express (2013) in the southern states, Hindi cinema&rsquo;s market was and continues to be, small in comparison with any of the four major south Indian cinemas on their home turf. Whether or not Chulbul Pandey speaks in Tamil or Putonghua in Dabangg 3, satellite television has already given us a glimpse of what entertainment looks like in the age of globalisation: foreign-looking characters will insist on speaking to us in Indian languages.</p>

<p>There will be a biopic on Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal where actor Shraddha Kapoor plays the sports star.</p>

<p>The film will capture the story of Saina&#39;s rise to become India&#39;s first winner of an Olympic badminton medal. She won a bronze medal in London.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Firstpost, Saina had said, &ldquo;It&#39;s a good thing; youngsters get to see their favourite player&#39;s life.&quot;</p>

<p>She had also said that Deepika Padukone would be her preference to play her on reel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When the film was announced earlier in 2016, there were talks of Deepika Padukone being the right choice for the female lead&rsquo;s role.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deepika Padukone is the daughter of Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone who also plays the sport. Deepika and Saina go a long way as they have even played together.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Saina added, &quot;Her father has been a badminton player and I have seen her playing badminton. She used to play really well. She can do justice to the role and I really wish she can do the role.&rdquo;</p>

<p>But breaking all speculations around casting, several news reports earlier today, confirmed that Shraddha Kapoor will be playing Saina&rsquo;s role in the biopic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amole Gupte has said that the Saina biopic will be very different from previous films in the category simply because of its central figure.</p>

<p><strong>Storyline: 3/5</strong></p>

<p>The story is about an ambitious lawyer from Lucknow, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, and his tussle with a seasoned player in the same profession. Needless to say, the plot revolves around a case, and quite a common one in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As the story isn&#39;t complicated, it gave ample space for execution and thus rightly fits the scheme of things.</p>

<p><strong>Direction: 4/5</strong></p>

<p>There are two parts of this movie that make you swoon over it, one of them is the&nbsp;direction. The devil is in the details and Subhash Kapoor knows that well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He kept the movie compact and even sprinkled a bit of Kashmir and a bit of patriotism, without missing on tiny details. Approximation to real life courts added to the authenticity of the scenarios.</p>

<p><strong>Acting: 4/5</strong></p>

<p>Akshay Kumar did justice to the film in his own sort of uptight funny manner and definitely upped the ante by adding star power to Jolly LLB sequel. Annu Kapoor is marvellous. You need to watch him to believe it.</p>

<p>Saurabh Shukla seems to have perfected the art of being a Judge and that too an entertaining one. There wasn&#39;t much for Huma Qureshi in this film so there isn&#39;t much to say about her performance.</p>

<p>Movie&rsquo;s music blends with its overall light-hearted spirit. With the festival of colour round the corner, it is good to have a peppy Holi song by Manj Musik and Raftaar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meet Brothers version of Jolly Good Fellow will get your foot tapping and Bawara Mann, as a romantic number, is quite apt for the month of love.</p>

<p><strong>Entertainment: 5/5</strong></p>

<p>Entertainment is the other part that makes you swoon over Jolly LLB 2. It is entertaining hands down.&nbsp;</p>
