<p>Sridevi was determined to take forward her diva&#39;s image into the coming years. During one of my last conversations with when I mentioned the forbidden &#39;f&#39; word (fifty), she protested strongly. &quot;No, no, don&#39;t even talk about it. I don&#39;t think of my age. Neither should you.&quot; She again requested me anxiously at the end of the interview to not mention her age in the interview.</p>

<p>But someone was counting her years. Bollywood screen divas have a nasty habit of leaving us prematurely. Nutan whom cancer claimed, was only 55 when she left us. Coincidentally, she too died in February, like Sridevi. Nutan left behind a legacy far greater than Sridevi or any of the screen legends.</p>

<p>Sad to say, Sridevi&#39;s Hindi films are no match to her volcanic talent.&nbsp;<i>Judaai</i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>Chandni</i>&nbsp;in which she was a powerhouse of exceptional skills are blatantly mediocre films. Throughout the 1980s, Sridevi excelled in the most atrocious potboilers from the South directed by the likes of T Rama Rao and K Raghvendra Rao.</p>

<p>I once asked her how she managed to be so brilliant in such awful films. Her reply? A giggle. And&hellip; &quot;I never discriminated among my roles. To me every film was equally precious and I gave the same respect to all my directors.&quot;&nbsp;</p>

<p>I wonder if the mythical Meena Kumari felt the same. Did she accord Kamal Amrohi and Guru Dutt, who immortalize her in&nbsp;<i>Pakeezah</i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam</i>, the same respect as Ramanna (<i>Jawab</i>) and Saawan Kumar Tak (<i>Gomti Ke Kinare</i>)? We lost Meena Kumari at the age of 39, just a week before the release of&nbsp;<i>Pakeezah</i>. Looking back at her oeuvre, I am amazed at how much of her legendary reputation depends on just a few classics. Most of the work she did was unquestionably mediocre. Try watching her in&nbsp;<i>Main Bhi Ladki Hoon</i>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<i>Chandan Ka Palna</i>.</p>

<p>Madhubala left us when she was 36. Her swan song,&nbsp;<i>Mughal-e-Azam</i>, still has the power to make us swoon. The closest we come to a fitting farewell for Sridevi is&nbsp;<i>English Vinglish</i>&nbsp;a deeply relevant and engaging discourse on the irrational importance the Indian middle class attaches to speaking the English language fluently.</p>

<p>Madhubala&#39;s celluloid legacy boasts of sporadic brilliance in films like&nbsp;<i>Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi</i>,&nbsp;<i>Tarana</i>&nbsp;and the underrated&nbsp;<i>Amar</i>. But her reputation rests largely on&nbsp;<i>Mughal-e-Azam</i>. Which is like saying Agra&#39;s reputation rests mainly on the Taj Mahal.</p>

<p>How many Taj Mahals did Geeta Bali leave behind when she died suddenly of smallpox at the age of 35? Many, including me, think of Geeta as the precursor to Sridevi. The impish charm the comic spontaneity and the sheer joie de vivre were shared by both the immortal actresses. But did Geeta Bali do any film worth remembering today? Not one of her films has any recall value. Not even&nbsp;<i>Albela</i>,which is recalled for the song&nbsp;<i>Shola jo bhadke</i>&nbsp;and nothing else.</p>

<p>Sridevi luckily is a screen great whose performances in&nbsp;<i>Mr India</i>&nbsp;(incidentally Geeta Bali too did a film titled&nbsp;<i>Mr India</i>),&nbsp;<i>Chalbaaz</i>,&nbsp;<i>Sadma</i>,&nbsp;<i>Judaai</i>,&nbsp;<i>Chandni</i>,&nbsp;<i>Lamhe</i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>English Vinglish</i>will keep us regaled till kingdom come.</p>

<p>But does Sridevi have a single&nbsp;<i>Mother India</i>,&nbsp;<i>Mughal-e-Azam</i>,&nbsp;<i>Bandini</i>,&nbsp;<i>Pakeezah</i>&nbsp;to her credit?</p>

Sridevi was reported in Dubai with her entire family to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah&#39;s wedding. Her sudden death has not only brought the murk to her family or the newly wedded couple, but to the entire film industry and the nation.</p>

<p>&lsquo;She will never return&rsquo; surely disheartens us because this time the almighty won&rsquo;t permit the miracle. But I remember when in 1997 she went on a sabbatical, how rumours yelled out &lsquo;she will never return&rsquo;. Definitely film industry was dejected by noting seeing Sri around for a long stint. Opinion: Sridevi's comeback with 'English Vinglish' was rare among Bollywood celebs

<p>This morning we all woke up to the shocking news of Sridevi&rsquo;s death. She was one of the most enduring and versatile actors of Bollywood. Sridevi made a comeback after a self-imposed sabbatical of many years when she went through the rigours of a somewhat controversial marriage to film director and producer, Boney Kapoor, followed by those child-bearing years. Indeed Sridevi&rsquo;s death at 54 has left many of us fans shell-shocked. You don&rsquo;t die at that age if you are slim and trim and have an evidently well-maintained figure. But perhaps that&rsquo;s the problem &ndash; having to look your best always for the papparazi and for Bollywood so you can continue to act, for acting itself becomes the adrenalin that pumps up the &lsquo;stars&rsquo; and their glitzy lives. But who knows the stress of living on a circumscribed diet and subjecting the body to so many make-overs to not look one&rsquo;s age. &nbsp;</p>

<p>They say Bollywood unites India like nothing else does. For someone, India&rsquo;s North East where Hollywood movies were a staple, those of us who watched &lsquo;Hindi&rsquo; movies (the term Bollywood had not yet gained currency then) were looked askance by our peers in school. And if you studied in an English medium school then you don&rsquo;t discuss Hindi movies with your classmates but would listen to them holding forth about Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra. Many teenagers my age sported the Cleopatra fringe too. But my mother was, for reasons best known to her, a Hindi movie buff and she would take me for all of them. That&rsquo;s how I too got hooked to Bollywood although we didn&rsquo;t understand half of what was happening since we didn&rsquo;t speak Hindi. But we laughed at Johnny Walker and Mehmood&rsquo;s jokes and wept buckets when we watched Dosti. Cinema is not so much about dialogues but about conveying emotions through body language and we had plenty of that in Bollywood. My mother passed on but I transferred my love for Hindi movies to my kids.</p>

<p>So when Sridevi returned with English-Vinglish at age 49 she became a trailblazer. And the movie was spectacular because it resonated with so many of us who struggle with English and are looked down upon by those who speak the language flawlessly, courtesy their schooling and elitist upbringing. &nbsp;In the movie, Sridevi takes up the challenge of learning English and she did to the amazement of all. I love this part &ndash; when women stop becoming victims and stand up for what they want from life. So, Sridevi, you touched many hearts and I know of many who enrolled in personality development courses &ndash; both men and women after watching English-Vinglish for the simple reason that we live in a society of hypocrites &ndash; as if English makes a man or woman. But, well, if one speaks and writes English perhaps the circle of acquaintances grows bigger. If that matters! &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>At the personal level, I loved the movie &lsquo;Mom&rsquo;. It&rsquo;s a movie that many mothers found inspiring. It&rsquo;s a movie that defies the conventional Hindustani type of household where everything is near perfect and families live life along expected lines. Here Sridevi is married to a man who has a daughter who studies at a college she is teaching &ndash; a step-daughter, Arya who could never accept a stepmother and believes it is a disrespect to her late mother&rsquo;s memory. But when Arya is raped and thrown into a gutter after she was waylaid by a classmate (who fancied her but who she thwarted) and his relative, a local bully and his henchmen. Arya was found by a morning walker who admits her to a hospital.</p>

<p>When Sridevi was informed of this incident she was livid and asked Arya for details so she can file an FIR at the local police station which in itself was a tall order. The case comes up for hearing but as usual, falls flat due to the poor investigation. It was then that Sridevi vows revenge and teams up with a private detective to kill the perpetrators one by one. Only Sridevi could have carried out that role so brilliantly and meticulously to avenge the rape of her step-child. What happens in the process is what the movie is all about but Mom is about the untapped strength of every woman. It is said that &lsquo;hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.&rsquo; I would say a woman wronged can wreak havoc in her pursuit of justice. That&rsquo;s what symbolises Kali and Durga too. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In her second avatar, Sridevi did full justice to her roles. Of course, we all loved her body moves in the lilting Hawa-Haiwai of Mr. India and other movies before that but they never made that lasting impact.</p>

<p>In November last year, Sridevi was at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at Goa. My son, Merlvin an actor who two Khasi movies &lsquo;Ri-Homeland of Uncertainty and &lsquo;Onaatah&rsquo; won national awards and who was a jury member for the Indian Panorama selection of feature and non-feature films met Sridevi and received a commendation plaque from her. He could not stop talking about how honoured he was to have met such a professional actor.</p>

<p>It&rsquo;s hard to believe that Sridevi is no longer with us. It&#39;s sadder that she will not be able to see her elder daughter Jahnvi&rsquo;s debut film Dhadak, directed by Karan Johar and due for release in July this year. But that&rsquo;s life, whose other side is death. Sridevi&rsquo;s memories will live on through her films. Rest in Peace wherever you are!</p>

Opinion: Sridevi reigned in NE India where Bollywood movies are not popular

<p>Getting late in the morning after a Saturday night party with friends, I did the first thing of the day which I do usually. Switched on the Wi-Fi, checked for the emails and Whatsapp messages. The first message flashed on a group was about the demise of the Sridevi. Taken aback, I went to Google news to confirm as social media is full of crap and false news at times.</p>

<p>It couldn&rsquo;t have been a bigger shock than this for me. &nbsp;I just sat quietly and tried assimilating this news. For me it wasn&rsquo;t just as simple as a death of Bollywood icon alone, it was the end of someone who kept my teen years captivated.</p>

<p>During the era of no internet, WhatsApp, Facebook and video games - Sridevi at the screen, Becker- Edberg at Wimbledon and PT Usha at the sprinting track were the few icons who kept me enthralled when I was going through my teens and entering into adulthood during later half of the eighties and early nineties.</p>

<p>I remember that after my 8th-grade final exams, my father, who wasn&rsquo;t a movie buff himself, asked me &ldquo;hey, get ready. I am taking you to the movie which you will enjoy&rdquo;. A bit amused though, I accompanied him. It was Mr. India; which in fact remained the only movie which my father showed me on his own. Notwithstanding, Mogambo Khus Hua and that invisible gadget, it was Sridevi who kept me spellbound. The song &#39;Hawa Hawai&#39; was beyond the barrier of highest of splendours.</p>

<p>Back home, next thing I did was that I hired a VCR and saw all those Sridevi flicks which I hadn&rsquo;t seen till then &ndash; Himmatwala, Tohfa, Aakhiri Rasta to name a few. More I saw her on screen, more I was enchanted.</p>

<p>The Eighties was a typical time. By 1983-84, best of Amitabh&rsquo;s years were over. Despite talented Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol and Jackie Shroff, the film industry was looking for next big star to fit in big shoes of Amitabh, and that was the time when best of Sridevi chipped in. There was a time in the eighties when Bollywood was relying heavily on the unending magnetism of her. The situation remained the same till 89-90 when first Madhuri Dixit and then Khan Trinity (Amir, Shahrukh &amp; Salman) hit the scene.</p>

<p>Her charm was unimaginatively high and unparalleled. When I entered in engineering college, as a weekly movie show at the in-campus open-air theatre, 1986&rsquo;s movie Chaalbaaz was filmed. We were awestruck by her aura which she brought in the role which hardly lasted for 10-15 minutes in the movie. No doubt, she stole the show despite all-other typical Feroz Khan flicks in the movie.<br />
Her charisma was intact even in her later years during the nineties and despite a whole new generation of actresses. Remember Khuda Gawah, Laadla and Judai, where she ruled in her late twenties and early &ndash;thirties. She redefined the lead romantic lead with all-time classics like Lamhe and Chandni. Then her double role in Chaalbaaz is beyond words, even a notch above Hema Malini in the original Seeta aur Geeta.</p>

<p>Sridevi was like Rajesh Khanna for Bollywood. The way Rajesh Khanna was the first superstar among male stars; she was the first superstar among actresses.</p>

<p>When I am still trying to cope with the shock, all that I can say is &quot;Thanks a ton Sridevi for the joy you brought to me and millions of your fans. Rest in peace&rdquo;.<br />

Opinion: Sridevi's flicks in 90s kept all young men captivated

<p>Sridevi&rsquo;s untimely demise arrives as 2018&rsquo;s early shockers but also as a grim reminder of a shallow, materialistic urban society that&rsquo;s diminishing in its core values.</p>

<p>I was out on a road trip from Mumbai to Delhi and a relaxing breather at Udaipur was brought to a disturbing halt as I woke up to the shocking news of Sri&rsquo;s sudden demise.</p>

<p>As a journalist with a keen eye for entertainment news, I couldn&rsquo;t help but ask myself if Sridevi&rsquo;s untimely death had anything to do with the constant societal pressure to look a certain way by defying age?</p>

<p>The constant surgeries, implants and botox shots that most heroines are succumbing to across the globe is a harsh reality that we need to address as a society, every time we hit a like on an age-defying face in a picture going viral on Facebook. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>That Sridevi and her daughter Jhanvi were a regular at Dr Raj Kanodia, a Hollywood celebrity cosmetic surgeon based in California is no secret. His Instagram account is a testimony to their visits along with SRK and wife Gauri Khan.&nbsp;</p>

Opinion: Sridevi, the tragedy of a diva

<p>Veteran film actor and Padma Shri awardee Sridevi, who had an illustrious career spanning over four decades, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/film-fraternity-fans-react-to-sridevis-tragic-demise-33959">passed away</a>. She was 54.</p>

<p>The actor, the wife of producer Boney Kapoor, died late in the night reportedly due to cardiac arrest in Dubai, where she had gone along with her family to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah&#39;s wedding.</p>

<p>Confirming the news, a source close to the family said, &quot;Yes it&#39;s true. She was in Dubai while some of the other family members came back to India. We hear it&#39;s <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/film-fraternity-fans-react-to-sridevis-tragic-demise-33959">cardiac arrest</a>.&quot;</p>

<p>While some of her family members returned from Dubai after the wedding, Sridevi, Boney and her younger daughter Khushi stayed back. Her elder daughter -- Janhvi -- had not travelled with the family because of the shooting schedule for her upcoming Bollywood film, her first in the industry.</p>

<p>Sridevi, known for her versatility as an actor, made her Bollywood debut in 1978 with &quot;Solva Sawan&quot;. But it was only after five years with Jeetendra-starrer &quot;Himmatwala&quot; that she gained commercial success.</p>

<p>Before her entry into Bollywood, the actor had been a known face in South Indian films. She made her debut as a child artist in in Tamil film &quot;Thunaivan&quot; in 1969. She also worked in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/film-fraternity-fans-react-to-sridevis-tragic-demise-33959">Sridevi</a>&#39;s beguiling eyes, scintillating screen presence and acting prowess soon made her one of the most sought-after actors in the Hindi film industry. While films like &quot;Mawaali&quot; (1983), &quot;Tohfa&quot; (1984), &quot;Mr India&quot; (1987) and &quot;Chandni&quot; (1989) kept her at the top in the box-office game, her outings like &quot;Sadma&quot; (1983), &quot;ChaalBaaz&quot; (1989), &quot;Lamhe&quot; (1991), and &quot;Gumrah&quot; (1993) earned her critical acclaim.</p>

<p>She went on a hiatus for 15 years after starring in home production &quot;Judaai&quot;, co-starring her brother-in-law Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar. It was director Gauri Shinde&#39;s &quot;English Vinglish&quot; in 2012 that marked Sridevi&#39;s comeback.</p>

<p>Her nuanced performance as a middle-class woman, learning to speak English to feel accepted by her family, won accolades, and the film was also a commercial success. Last year, she was seen in revenge-drama, &quot;Mom&quot;, opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna. She also shot for a special appearance in superstar Shah Rukh Khan&#39;s upcoming film, &quot;Zero&quot;, which releases in December.</p>

<p>Sridevi was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, in 2013.</p>

<p>Minutes after the news of her death broke, many Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Sushmita Sen, Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh took to Twitter to pay their condolences.</p>

<p>The first one, however, was megastar Amitabh Bachchan who in a cryptic tweet wrote, &quot;Don&#39;t know why, feeling a strange restlessness.&quot;</p>

<p>It&rsquo;s a tricky terrain, where the temptation to try and repeat yesterday&rsquo;s feat is strong, whether the call comes from within or by ambitious, persistent film-makers. &nbsp;The once Queen-of-Hearts, Madhuri Dixit finally succumbed and gave the nod to Aaja Nach Le. Married and mother of two, she produced a spirited effort in the Yash Raj offering, but alas, few hearts went dhak-dhak. &nbsp;Her subsequent films, Ishquian and Dedh Ishquian too, while critically acclaimed, did nothing to indicate a mass-driven encore. &nbsp;The fabulous Sridevi too tried a TV serial which had to be peeled off the ceiling. She took the hint and focused on domestic bliss, marriage, and motherhood. &nbsp;Her comeback vehicles &ndash; English Vinglish and Mom - were smart choices. &nbsp;Central-character-driven, she played her age and pulled it off with success. &nbsp;Juhi Chawla and Karishma Kapoor attempted to return too but were greeted by the law of diminishing returns. &nbsp;Even the breathtakingly beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan&#39;s Jazbaa and Aye Dil Hai Mushkil evoked the excitement of the wrong kind. Joining the list of comeback casualties are Raveena Tandon [Sandwich and Buddha Hoga Tera Baap], Rekha [Super Nani], Preity Zinta [Ishq in Paris], Manisha Koirala [Bhoot Returns], and Suchitra Krishnamurthy [My Wife&rsquo;s Murder]. &nbsp;Others are bound to follow.</p>

<p>Actually, comebacks are a tough call. &nbsp;Forget the corny and clich&eacute;d line &ldquo;What do you mean the comeback? &nbsp;I never went away. &nbsp;I was just taking a sabbatical and looking for the right role and project&rdquo;.</p>

<p>&nbsp;The truth is, this is not Hollywood where almost every top heroine is married, having two kids and yet continues to rock the charts and popular imagination. &nbsp;Unfortunately in Bollywood, New is Now. &nbsp;You can be the most loved and talented heroine in the country, but once you are married [Strike 1] and have kids [Strike 2], its best you stay at home playing wife and mummy dearest. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Why? &nbsp;Because popular perception has changed dramatically about your persona. &nbsp;From young, hot, single, you are now, well actually forget it! &nbsp;If Kajol has been the glorious exception, it&rsquo;s because she has been very selective about her role, banner, director, content and leading man. Dimple Kapadia too in earlier times. Although she&rsquo;s no more the leading lady, yet with those killer looks she could easily have been Bollywood&rsquo;s very own Mrs. Robinson!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming to Rani Mukherjee, after a lukewarm Mardani, will she follow this doomed list or break new ground to scale new heights?</p>

<p>She seems realistic to understand that audiences in 2018 are unlikely to go Kuch Kuch Hota Hai after seeing her. &nbsp;Post marriage and motherhood, she will have to concentrate more on performance than looks to re-make the cut with this new-age audience. &nbsp;So the challenge and opportunity will be on re-invention, re-cast and re-branding herself as an actress, and not be depending on the charm, beauty, sex-appeal exuding romantic charisma. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Will she be able to pull off her portrayal of Naina Mathur, a character handicapped with Tourette syndrome, a condition that forces an individual to make involuntary repetitive movements and sounds? &nbsp;Will the movie viewer accept a once-romantic Rani in such an unusual role? &nbsp;Well, in 2005, she delivered a knockout with Black, so it could be an encore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Here&rsquo;s hoping that Rani does break the rules and prove that with focus, dedication, realism and talent, comebacks with Hichkis, rock!&nbsp;</p>
