<p>Two months after Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's untimely death, the debate around nepotism refuses to die down. Since June 14, when Sushant was found dead at his Mumbai apartment, the dark and murky side of showbiz has come to light tarnishing the image of one of India's biggest soft power, Bollywood.<br />

On Friday, the Producers Guild of India shared an open letter on its official Twitter page and said while it accepted that the film industry was not perfect, it was pertinent to understand that Bollywood was one of the most important sources of soft power for the nation at a global level.<br />

Following theSushant's death celebrities like Kangana Ranaut have opened up about nepotism and drug abuse in Bollywood. While she has been castigating the industry for the nepotism tendencies of certain influential filmmakers, Kangana recently claimed that 99 per cent of Bollywood was on drugs.<br />
<br />
In a statement issued on Friday, the Guild said, "The last few months have seen relentless attacks on the reputation of the Indian film industry across all media. The tragic death of a promising young star has been used by some as a tool to defame and slander the film industry and its members."<br />
<br />
"A picture has been painted of the industry as a terrible place for outsiders to aspire to; a place that treats those who dare to enter it with contempt and derision; a murky den of substance abuse and criminality. <strong>This narrative is salacious enough for the media to exploit to great effect in order to boost its ratings, readership and page views."</strong></p>

<p>But it is not the truth, the Guild asserted.<br />
<br />
"Like any other sector there is no doubt that the film industry has its imperfections, and there must always be an ongoing attempt by any industry to improve upon itself, learn and evolve, while weeding out unsavoury elements or improper practices that hold it back. But to paint an entire industry with the same brush is a gross misrepresentation of reality," read the statement.</p>

<p>Highlighting the positive aspects of the industry, the Guild added,<strong> "The film industry employs hundreds of thousands of people, boosts travel and tourism and is one of the most important sources of soft power for India across the world. </strong>It has entertained hundreds of millions of people for over a century and has brought joy, honour and glory to the nation. It has welcomed and embraced talent from across the country - from the worlds of literature, poetry, art and music - and has drawn them in to create a unique cinematic language."</p>

<p>"This has ensured that we are one of the few countries in the world to still have a vibrant and thriving local film industry across multiple languages, despite the decades-long onslaught of Hollywood."</p>

<p>The industry has contributed generously to "national causes in times of need, and has readily offered its resources,name, recognition, time and funds - whenever called upon to do so, and often even without having to be called upon".</p>

<p>They agreed that it`s not easy to enter the industry and there are struggles.</p>

<p>"We do not negate the personal experiences of anyone from the industry, and undoubtedly many of those entering the business and seeking to establish themselves have faced numerous hardships, struggles and disappointments in the course of building a career here. But that is no different from the challenges and obstacles faced by new entrants in any field that they are not born into - be it politics, law, business, medicine or the media.</p>

<p>"<strong>However, a concerted effort has been made to single out the film industry as one that specifically inhibits and prohibits new talent from the outside from thriving. This could not be further from the truth."</strong></p>

<p>"There are scores of talented actors, directors, writers, musicians, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, production designers, costume designers, art directors and numerous other film professionals across multiple disciplines who have had absolutely no connection to the industry, but who have flourished and produced inspiring and pathbreaking work, which has defined -- and then redefined -- Indian cinema."</p>

<p>"Being born into the industry most definitely affords you the privilege of access and a first break, but after that it is up to each individual`s talent, hard work and drive to propel them forward."</p>

<p>The statement further read: "This is a place that ultimately rewards your talent, work ethic and ability to connect with an audience - regardless of your religion, gender, caste or economic strata.</p>

<p><strong>"While it is undoubtedly more difficult for those on the outside to get that first chance to display their talent - with perseverance, persistence and a little bit of luck - you can and do succeed."</strong></p>

<p>"These are difficult times for our country and the world, so rather than venting our fears and frustrations on each other with vile and vicious trolling, it is more important than ever to come together instead of tearing each other apart. Members of the industry on both sides of this debate, especially women, have been subjected to rape threats and death threats. This is unacceptable and must stop now," the statement said.</p>

<p>As Arjun Kapoor returned to the sets on Saturday after staying home for four months due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the actor urged people to try and adjust to the new normal .&nbsp;</p>

<p>Production on films, television and digital projects were put on hold in mid-March to help curb the spread of the novel virus.</p>

<p>On May 31, the Maharashtra government issued guidelines for producers and filmmakers to resume the shooting of films, TV shows and web series in non-containment zones, emphasizing safety and security norms.</p>

<p>"Everyone of us will have to adjust to the new normal and slowly resetting our lives. My work life restarted and I shot for the first time in four months. Everything is changed. New world order. Accepted," Arjun wrote on Instagram alongside a photograph of him from the shoot.</p>

<p>Keeping in accordance with guidelines of the state government to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the sets, cameras started rolling in Indian television industry last month, while Bollywood is yet to begin shoot of films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The guidelines include maintaining 33 per cent crew on sets and all of them should carry identification cards and Aarogya Setu app downloaded on their compatible devices, shooting crew should maintain a six-feet distance from each other and wear masks as well as maintain hygiene.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Arjun said while he was a bit sceptical to come for the shoot, the adequate safety measures taken on the sets put him at ease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I have to admit that I was a bit jittery at the start but seeing all the safety measures in place, I became absolutely fine in no time. Naturally, the initial days of us stepping out to work again will be a little difficult for all of us psychologically.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But today, I'm more confident of shooting and being around people on the sets because I have seen the extensive preparations that people are taking to ensure we have the highest safety measures on the sets," the actor said.</p>

<p>On film front, Arjun is awaiting the release of "Sandeep Aur Pinky Farar" and prior to the lockdown had started shooting for a yet-to-be-titled family dramedy, produced by T-Series, Nikkhil Advani's Emmay Entertainment and John Abraham's JA Entertainment.</p>

<p>The 35-year-old actor is likely to resume the shoot of the film soon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Incidentally, Saroj Khan's last choreographed number also featured Madhuri Dixit. The duo worked together in Abhishek Verman's 'Kalank' where Khan choreographed Dixit in the song 'Tabah Ho Gaye'.</p>

<p>In 2019 IIFA awards, the actress had also honoured the veteran choreographer with the Lifetime achievement award and performed to a medley of the duo's hit number as a tribute to Khan.</p>

<p>'Aarya' is the mixture of a crime thriller and an emotional drama that always keeps its viewers on the edge of their seats. This web show has been the talk of the town, because of the return of Bollywood's evergreen Queen B Sushmita Sen. From Naseeruddin Shah to Madhavan this trend of comebacks on OTT platforms has been going on since a very long time. We can't tell you how much we missed the elegant and always convincing power-packed performances of Sushmita Sen on screen. Along with her, we get to see the comeback of actor Chandrachur Singh who vanished into thin air many years ago. The show is an official adaptation of Dutch series Penoza which many of us might not have heard of before.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Aarya' has Sushmita Sen written all over it, in fact, the title of the film is the name of her character. Set in Rajasthan, the show is the journey of Aarya, who struggles to clean the mess left by her husband, fending off a rival drug mafia in order to keep her children safe.</p>

<p>The calm before the storm: Aarya's husband Tej Sareen (Chandrachur Singh) runs Aryasatva Pharmaceuticals, which is just a front for a secret illegal business of transporting medical drugs with a large quantity of opium across the Indian border. With all his contacts and bribes in various checkpoints in place, Tej's business was going smooth and away from the radar of police. However, the matter goes out of hand when he, along with his partners in business and crime, friend Jawahar (Namit Das) and brother-in-law Sangram (Ankur Bhatia) decide to take the business to next level. The trio steals feared drug mafia Shekawat's (Manish Choudhary) 300 crore consignment of narcotics and all hell breaks loose. While Tej gets shot, Sangram lands up in jail and Jawahar struggles to find a way through this mess. This event causes a domino effect on&nbsp;Aarya's whole family and&nbsp;the family business.</p>

<p>Directed by Ram Madhvani, Sandeep Modi and Vinod Rawat, the web show has 9 episodes of around 50 minutes each. We get to see Sushmita Sen's character develop from a person who willingly stays away from the family business to someone who calls all the shots because of unforeseen circumstances to keep her children safe. Each episode of the show ends in a cliff hanger, increasing the urge to binge-watch this crime thriller with a gripping storyline. The writers of the show Sandeep Shrivastava and Anu Singh Choudhary make sure the viewers never stop their guessing game, by adding new twists and turns to the plot every episode.</p>

<p>The music of the show adds to the thriller element, it blends perfectly well with the scenes and never gets unnecessary and overpowering. We also see the use of old Hindi songs such as '<i>Bade Achhe Lagte Hain</i>', '<i>Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana</i>' and '<i>Aaiye Meherbaan</i>' to show different moods during the narrative. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Although Aarya seems like a show made just for Sushmita Sen's comeback, it would not have been executed half as well without its other cast members' solid performances, whose subplots add more depth into the narrative of the show. ACP Khan (Vikas Kumar) of the Narcotics Enforcement Bureau plays a brilliant role as a cop who is chasing Aarya and her family to find a loose end and bust their seemingly shady business. Aarya's children Aditya, Veer and Arundati provide good performances, portraying naive kids trying to make sense and come to terms with the reality of their family.</p>

<p>There are a few things that could have been executed slightly differently in the show. For starters the length, it surely is a big commitment to invest 9 hours into this crime thriller. Even though the narrative is not flat, it does get a bit stretched in between the episodes, especially the latter half of the show. Aarya tends to deviate from the main plot of who shot Tej, with going far too deep into stories of other characters. At some points, you ask yourself, was that scene actually necessary? Adding too many characters and subplots also led to holes in the main plotline.</p>

<p>Even though everyone was aware that someone tried to kill Tej, why was there no security outside Aarya's house to protect her and the children? Aarya did stop the children from going to school once, but what about the other days? Where did Aarya's mother disappear after the first few episodes? Maybe all these could have been avoided with a tighter script. It takes far too long to reach to the killers of Tej Sareen and does drag towards the end.</p>

<p>Apart from these flaws, watch Aarya to see Sushmita Sen back in action on screen, as she lifts this mediocre crime thriller to another level.</p>

Actor Ali Fazal's mother passes away in Lucknow

<p>As the industry reels under the loss of actor Sushant Singh Rajput who died by suicide on Monday at his Mumbai residence, there are fresh allegations of “bullying” against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan by film director Abhinav Kashyap.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ace director Anurag Kashyap’s brother Abhinav&nbsp;directed Salman in ‘Dabangg’ as the film became a superhit. Soon after, he broke off ties with the Salman Khan family.</p>

<p>Calling out the&nbsp;industry, Abhinav said that the Khan family was "trying to take control of (his) career by bullying" him.&nbsp;When he did not give in, his career was threatened where Salman used his star power and went to great lengths to sabotage his career. He mentioned his film with Ranbir Kapoor, ‘Besharam’ that Salman used his clout to get delayed. It was the last film that Abhinav directed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said, "I know who my enemies are. Let it be known that they are Salim Khan, Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan," also alleging that he received threats by text which he attributes to the brothers.</p>

<p>The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has appealed to studio partners, producers, artistes and content creators to support the cinema exhibition sector by holding their films and releasing them in theatres once they're opened again.<br />
India is currently under the lockdown with around 1.3 billion people asked to stay home in view of the coronavirus outbreak.<br />

There were rumours that several films are looking at a direct-to-digital release amid the lockdown, including Akshay Kumar starrer 'Laxmmi Bomb'.<br />

In a statement, MAI requested producers to "respect the exclusive theatrical window."<br />

"To this end, we urge all studios, producers, artistes and other content creators, to kindly respect the exclusive theatrical window, which has been a time-tested industry practice, agreed to by all stake-holders, not just in India, but even globally, for several decades," the statement read.<br />

MAI said when the crisis ends, the combination of the "pent-up demand" and the promise of new movies would boost film business and contribute massively in reviving the industry.<br />
<br />
"The collective, social experience of watching films on the big screen needs to be preserved and it can be done so only with the collective support of all stakeholders."<br />
<br />
Established under the aegis of FICCI in 2002, the national multiplex trade body represents more than 18 regional and national multiplex chains, including PVR, INOX, Carnival and Cinepolis, and operates more than 2900 screens across the country.<br />

Calling the situation "truly unprecedented and unparalleled," the association said it is committed to working with government institutions and partners through the weeks and months to come to ensure that cinemas survive this "testing time and once again become the vibrant home of entertainment, culture and community that they always have been."<br />
