In a bid to dispel rumors against the newly enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch a campaign on Sunday to generate awareness among the people regarding the citizenship law.

Starting from today, the campaign will conclude on January 15.

The party's top leadership will reach out to masses to end the confusion over the CAA spread by the Opposition.

In Uttar Pradesh, BJP working president JP Nadda will inaugurate a public relations campaign in Vaishali sector of Ghaziabad and also at Hindi Bhawan situated in Lohia Nagar.

While sharing more details of the same, State General Minister Vidyasagar Sonkar and State Minister Prakash Pal said that the Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will be in Lucknow and will begin the campaign in LDA Colony.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will also participate in the campaign and will visit Samvad Bhavan Gorakhpur later in the day.

As part of its programme, the BJP has launched a toll-free number 8866288662 for people to give missed calls to register their endorsement of the law.

The Act grants Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

BJP's public campaign on Citizenship Amendment Act to begin from today

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Singh Yadav on Sunday said that the BJP cannot decide on anyone`s citizenship and added that he will not fill National Population Register (NPR) form.

"Samajwadis want to save the Constitution. On the other hand, BJP wants to abolish the Constitution. Much of this pretence is done to divert attention. Do young people want employment or NPR?" Yadav said while addressing a gathering of party`s student wing leaders.

"No one from BJP can decide whether we are citizens or not. If the need arises, I will be the first one who will not fill any form, but the question is you will support or not. We will not fill the NPR form. What will you do? NRC and NPR are against poor and minority," he said.

NPR snowballed into conspiracy after Opposition parties alleged that NPR is the first step towards the creation of the National Register Citizens (NRIC).

However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah denied any link between the two exercises.

Yadav claimed that more than 300 BJP MLAs are angry with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

"Samajwadis are not afraid of FIR. When the Chief Minister himself withdraws the cases filed against him, then the cases filed against you will also be withdrawn if the Samajwadi government is formed," he added.

The Samajwadi Party president said that BJP is responsible for the current economic crisis.

"Demonetisation caused problems for small businesses. Further, the businesses are closing down due to the imposition of GST. The economy has reached the ICU. For all this, BJP is responsible," he said.&nbsp;

In what comes as a huge relief to the 4-month-old Yediyurappa-led government in Karnataka, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday won 12 out of the 15 seats in bypolls.&nbsp;

The rebellion within the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in July 2019 had brought down the year-old Kumaraswamy government in the state. The BJP had given tickets to 13 defectors out of the 15 seats, 11 of whom have emerged victorious.&nbsp;

In a major loss to former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Congress won only 2 seats despite expecting victory in at least 7.&nbsp;

"During the bypolls, the ruling party always has an edge. But ultimately we accept defeat. But we don't have to be disheartened, because as far as Karnataka is concerned the Congress is strong" said senior Congress leader, DK Shivakumar.&nbsp;

With the new additions, the BJP sits at comfortably with 117 seats in the 223 member house which puts them 5 figures above the magic number of 112 seats. The number could also go up to 118 with sources indicating that BJP rebel Sharath Bachchegowda is expected to return to the party fold after winning as an independent from Hosakote constituency. The Congress has improved its numbers marginally and sits with 68 members, whereas JD(S)' figures remain unchanged at 34. After a bitter fallout, the former coalition partners Congress and JD(S) had fought the bypolls separately on December 5.

Interestingly, the chaos resulting from the rebellion seems to have had a little damaging impact on the prospects of the MLAs in question. 13 of the 15 candidates who were given tickets by the BJP were rebels who were allowed to contest elections following a Supreme Court order on November 13.&nbsp;

Of the 13 candidates, only 2 rebel MLAs failed to get the required mandate. Interestingly, H Vishwanath, former JD(S) state president, who led the rebel MLAs to Mumbai in July, lost the bypoll in Hunsur to Congress candidate HP Manjunath.&nbsp;

The next big challenge for the Yediyurappa government will be the cabinet's expansion. It was the cabinet portfolio allotment that had unravelled the precariously placed Kumaraswamy government too.&nbsp;

The first round of cabinet expansion in August 2019 saw the internal rebellion of the party come to the fore. In the second round of expansion, the defectors will look to be accommodated with plum posts.&nbsp;

"11 of 12 winning BJP candidates will be accommodated in the cabinet. The Ranibennur MLA was not promised a berth. I do not see why the 11 others cannot be inducted. I will go to Delhi in the next 3-4 days and finalise it' said Yediyurappa.&nbsp;

However, senior BJP loyalists might not be thrilled with 11 'outsiders' being given the preference for cabinet berths. Despite the victory, it is going to be a tightrope walk for the 76-yr-old Chief Minister in the South Indian state.&nbsp;

Chidambaram also mentioned several developmental indicators in order to support his claim that Jharkhand is slipping backwards.&nbsp;

"Jharkhand's growth rate is good two per cent below the national average. Jharkhand has third-lowest per capita income in the country. Unemployment in Jharkhand is fourth highest in the country," he said.

Chidambaram also said that Congress was able to give a "dent" to BJP in Haryana, Maharashtra. "In Haryana, we dented BJP. In Maharashtra, we dented the BJP. In Jharkhand, we must defeat the BJP," Chidambaram said.&nbsp;

Senior Congress&nbsp;leader also said that the election in Jharkhand is an important "turning point" in the ongoing struggle between BJP and "secular, progressive parties". &nbsp;

Taking a jibe at BJP's claim of "double engine growth" implying both state and Centre have BJP governments, Chidambaram said, "Double engine growth is good if the two engines are pulling in the same direction but if they are pulling the opposite direction, this is what will happen."&nbsp;

Chidambaram also said that Congress-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha will not make tall promises and will provide a "competent" government in the state.

We don't want the minister to come and tell you that I don't eat onions. Our ministers will never say that," Chidambaram added.&nbsp;

The five-phase Assembly election in Jharkhand are underway and on November 30, voting for the first round was held. Voting for the next round will be held on December 7 and the elections will be completed on December 20. The results of the state Assembly election will be declared on December 23.&nbsp;

The BJP president also assured the people of the state that National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented in the entire country before the 2024 general election.

The elections in Jharkhand are underway and the state voted for the first phase on November 30. The voting for the next phase will be held on December 20 covering 20 assembly constituencies. The fifth and final phase will go to polls on December 20 and the results will declared on December 23.

Shah asserted that the current slowdown in economy is a "temporary phase" and the Indian industry which contributes 60 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) to the economy will join with the vision of Modi government to make India a 5 trillion-dollar economy by 2024.

Expressing hope that the Indian industry and market will tide over this temporary crisis despite a slowdown, the home minister assured the industry that the "government is standing solidly behind them and is tackling all the challenges in a proactive fashion".

He said that the last 5 years were of the "detoxification of the economy" and in the next five years a "series of reforms" will be taken to make it one of the most powerful economies of the world.

"India is already a destination of global companies due to its huge market and FDI is at record level today. Even Sensex and nifty have breached all records," Shah added.

The home minister said that the government is committed to strengthening the industry and the trade and said: "By lowering the corporate tax ranging between 17 to 25 per cent, India has got the distinction of one of the lowest corporate tax levying country. Even fiscal deficit which was 4.5 per cent in 2013-14 has come down to 3.3 per cent and inflation has been checked at 3.3 per cent from 5.9 per cent earlier."

Emphasising on the goods and services tax (GST) and ease of doing business, he said: "The vision of one nation one tax has been realised and a series of labour reforms are in the offing."

"On the front of ease of doing business, India was at the rank of 142 in 2014 but in the last 5 years we jumped to 77 and expressed hope that by 2024, India will be somewhere at the rank of 30," the union minister said.

Shah said that the decision to not join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) was taken in the interest of the industry as India has already free trade agreement (FTA) with China, Australia and New Zealand. "The Modi government has taken the hard decision in the interest of Indian industry," he said.

Referring to a series of measures taken in the field of infrastructure both in the rural and urban areas, he said that the Make in India and Start-up India projects are going to scale new heights in years to come. Stating that India voted to power Narendra Modi in 2014, he said:

"The local leadership of BJP promised of bringing funds from the Centre if their government came to power in Karnataka but they brought nothing even after such a huge flood. Modi neither spoke about Karnataka nor did he visit the state," he said.

"In my opinion Modi hates Karnataka, I don`t know what is the reason. Does he hate Karnataka because he hates Yediyurappa? He never helps Karnataka due to reasons unknown to us," he added.

Speaking on Maharashtra politics, Kharge said: "We formed the government with Shiv Sena even when our President was not in favour of it. But suggestions by MLAs, other parties and leftist parties suggested us to keep BJP away from the power which is why we formed the government with NCP and Shiv Sena. We just wanted to keep the fascist party away."

The by-elections for 15 out of 17 seats in Karnataka are slated to be held on December 5. The results will be declared on December 9.&nbsp;

BJP MP from Bhopal, Pragya Singh Thakur on Friday reiterated in Lok Sabha that she had not called Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a "deshbhakt" and expressed apology if someone had been hurt by her remarks.

Pragya, who is known for making controversial remarks, apologised for the second time in Lower House after the opposition members expressed dissatisfaction with her statement made earlier in the day.

"On November 27 during the discussion on SPG bill, I did not call Nathuram Godse 'deshbhakt', did not take his name. Even then if someone has been hurt, I express regret and seek an apology," she said earlier in the day.

However, Thakur had to be checked by Speaker amid interruptions by opposition members after she started speaking.

"I have tolerated many atrocities given by enemies..." she said in the beginning.

The second apology from Thakur came after the meeting of leaders in the House. In her apology in the House earlier, Pragya also raked up of being called terrorist by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Gandhi had on November 27 tweeted, "Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot. A sad day, in the history of India`s Parliament."

"If any of my remarks in the House have hurt anyone, I express regret for that and apologise. But I also want to say that my words in the House have been twisted and presented wrongly. My remarks had different context which were wrongly presented. The way my words have been twisted, it is condemnable," she said.

"I respect the service done by Mahatma Gandhi for the country. I want to tell the House that a member has publicly called me a terrorist. Despite the conspiracies of the then government against me, no charge has been proved against me. Without charge having been proved, calling me a terrorist is against the law. Calling me terrorist without charges having been proved in an attempt to insult me as a woman, as a "sanyasi", as an MP, is an attack on my dignity," she said.

She alleged the then government had hatched conspiracy to torture her mentally.

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVP) is the name given to the alliance between NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

Raut also said that the party intends to form a non-BJP political front in the country. "It will happen across the country. After Maharashtra, it is Goa, then we will go to other states. We want to make a non-BJP political front in this country," Raut added.

It should be noted that Congress won the maximum number of seats in Goa in the Assembly elections in February 2017. But BJP came to power as it was supported by three MLAs each of Goa Forward Party, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and an independent MLA.&nbsp;

Congress had originally claimed 17 seats, while BJP ended up with 13 seats in the Assembly elections. However, 12 Congress MLAs later joined BJP, including 10 that joined in July this year led by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar.&nbsp;

After 12 Congress detractors joined BJP, Goa Forward Party decided to take back its support from the government as three party leaders were stripped from the cabinet including Sardesai from the post of deputy CM.

Earlier on Thursday, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav took oath as Maharashtra CM as the party stitched an alliance with foe-turned-friends NCP and Congress. Uddhav Thackeray's oath came after BJP's Devendra Fadnavis resigned as CM three days after swearing as his party failed to get majority

With Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray taking oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have sharpened their attacks on their past ally in the NDA.

With several leaders including cabinet ministers and spokespersons coming out openly against the former ally, it is now likely that the attacks on the Maharashtra alliance will intensify in the coming days. The BJP is seemingly upset with the fact that it lost out on forming a government in the state despite being the largest political party with 105 MLAs in the 288 member state Assembly.

Speaking to ANI, cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Giriraj Singh targeted the Shiv Sena for its alleged attempts at getting a secular certification from the Congress, while at the same time deserting the NDA alliance."There are two people who give a certificate of secularism in this country. One is Congress and second is one who can abuse Hindus. Those who want the certificate should do the same," Singh said while alleging that Shiv Sena was desperate to seek validation from the Congress in its lust for power.

The minister also claimed that he had not compared the party with the Mughals in his tweets. "All I have said is that in lust for power, princely states and kings joined hands with Mughals. Mughal expanded in India through some princely states. Likewise, the Maharashtra government was formed with Congress," he clarified.

Further targeting the Shiv Sena, Singh said, "How can he (Uddhav Thackeray) get upset when asked about secularism. It is running on all TV channels. Definition of secular came here in 1976 but in Sanatan dharma, it has been there for ages. Secularism is in our DNA.''

The party is seemingly peeved at the attempt by the new Maharashtra alliance that had led to the removal of Devendra Fadnavis government, within days of BJP leaders taking oath as Maharashtra CM for a second time.

He said that when he first visited Jharkhand in 2014, the state was badly affected by Naxalism and violence because of which the state lagged behind other states on developmental&nbsp;issues.

"But the BJP government changed this. We have been able to eliminate Naxalism because our intent is clear and we are working with honesty," Modi said.&nbsp;

He also accused Congress of using Naxals for political gains, adding that in the past five years, the government is able to eliminate this issue by bringing the disgruntled youth into the mainstream.&nbsp;

Calling the election as a contest between those who 'serve' and those who 'loot', the PM added: The Congress has problems, we have the solutions. They have accusations, we have the report of the work we have done. They have empty promises, we have the proof of development".&nbsp;
