<h2>Can Bayern upset Man City?</h2>

The record German champions, in Thomas Tuchel’s first European game in charge, were put to the sword after they were blown away 3-0 in Manchester. While the clash comes early for Eric Chuppo-Motting, the German side has plenty of firepower in their ranks and could stage a big comeback into the contest. On the horizon, Pep Guardiola will try to get one better on his former side with his own firepower.

City have won only once at the Allianz Arena and will look to book another semifinal berth as Real Madrid await them yet again in the last four.

The home side will have a huge boost in the form of Sadio Mane as he returns to the squad having served his one-match club suspension. Mane was suspended for having an altercation with Leroy Sane during the first leg in Manchester. However, Bayern will still be without the likes of Manuel Neuer and Lucas Hernandez as they are out with long-term injuries.

On the horizon, City will have a near-perfect squad as they still are in the FA Cup along with a tense Premier League (PL) title challenge on the hands as well. Phil Foden is expected to be on the bench while the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are also expected to be on the show after they were given early relief on the weekend against Leicester City.

<h2>Inter eye dream semifinal clash</h2>

In the night’s other clash, three-time champions Inter Milan will look for a dream date in the semifinal against arch-rivals AC Milan as they carry a 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Inter’s domestic form has been dismal, but an unlikely run in the Champions League has given manager Simone Inzaghi a reprieve. A draw or even a loss by 0-1 could still see Inter make the last four and set up an all-Italian affair against AC Milan in the semifinal.

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:

Sommer; Pavard, Upamecano, De Ligt, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Musiala, Coman; Choupo-Moting

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Champions League: Bayern Munich face STERN Man City challenge for SF berth; Inter eye smooth passage in last 4

Bayern Munich duo Sadio Mane and Leroy Sane are in hot water after the record German Champions lost 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, April 11. It is reported that there was a bust-up between the duo where Mane is reported to have punched Sane, which left the German star with bleeding lips. Other players then separated Mane and Sane while Thomas Tuchel was left to rue for his team’s debacle in his first European game in charge of Bayern Munich.

<h2>What exactly happened between Mane and Sane?</h2>

Sky Germany reported on Wednesday that Sane's lip was bleeding after the altercation and the two players needed to be separated by their fellow team-mates in the dressing room. The two players were also seen in an altercation during the match when Bayern conceded three goals. The uncomfortable situation between the players saw wild scenes in the dressing room where Mane ended up landing a punch on the former Manchester City star.

Upon arrival in Munich, the team management took care of the matters by arranging a cab for Mane while Sane took the team bus from the airport.

Bayern are yet to comment on the incident and it is thought that they will carry out an investigation into the matter behind closed doors.

Champions League: Bayern Munich camp in chaos as Sadio Mane reported to punch Leroy Sane in bust-up

Bayern Munich have suspended forward Sadio Mane for one game following an altercation with Leroy Sane after this week's Champions League loss to Man City, the club announced Thursday. Newspaper Bild reported former City winger Sane was hit in the face by the Senegal attacker, suffering a cut lip after Tuesday's loss.

"Sadio Mane, 31, will not be in the FC Bayern squad for the home game against 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday," Bayern said. "The reason is misconduct by Mane after FC Bayern's Champions League game at Manchester City.

"In addition, Mane will receive a fine," they added.

The one-match suspension means Mane will be available for manager Thomas Tuchel in Wednesday's return leg against Manchester City in Munich.

Bild reported the clash started in the dying stages of Bayern's loss in Manchester, with footage showing the two arguing on the pitch.&nbsp;

Mane has endured a frustrating time since joining the German champions from Liverpool in the summer of 2022. Signed as a replacement for the departing Robert Lewandowski, the Champions League winner has scored 11 times in 32 matches for Bayern. The two-time African Player of the Year scored six goals in his first seven matches in all competitions for Bayern, but has not scored since October.&nbsp;

Mane has also had six goals ruled out for offside so far this season for Bayern, a Bundesliga record.

Mane suffered a leg injury while playing for Bayern against Werder Bremen in November which kept him out of Senegal's Qatar World Cup campaign and he missed nine club matches.

After Bayern's German Cup exit at the hands of Freiburg in early April, a smiling Mane told reporters "soon, I promise you" after he was asked when he would return to the spectacular form he displayed with Liverpool.&nbsp;

Mane was given his first start under Tuchel, who replaced the sacked Julian Nagelsmann last month, in Saturday's 1-0 league win at Freiburg, missing several chances to score.

Before the incident, Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn acknowledged Mane's struggles, putting it down to the former Southampton striker having "a lot of competition" for starting spots.

"He doesn't know that (from Liverpool) and is perhaps not used to it."

"He's still looking for himself."

Bayern declined media requests to comment on the altercation.&nbsp;

Mane and Sane were seen on the training pitch early on Thursday, hours before the suspension was announced.

The loss was Bayern's biggest Champions League defeat since 2017 and one of the club's most devastating defeats in Champions League history.

Despite Mane being available, the six-time European champions now have little hope of turning over the deficit in next Wednesday's return leg in Munich to make it to the semi-finals.

Guardiola has been regularly criticised for overly tinkering with his side when it comes to the crunch in the Champions League knockout stages.

But it was Tuchel who made some bold calls with his team selection as Thomas Mueller and Sadio Mane were left on the bench, alongside Joao Cancelo on his return to the Etihad after joining Bayern on loan in January.

City fought off interest from Bayern among other European giants to win the race to sign Erling Haaland a year ago for nights like this.

The 22-year-old duly delivered in the end but uncharacteristically fluffed his lines with the first big chance of the game when his weak shot was straight at Yann Sommer.

At the other end, City were grateful to a brilliant block from Ruben Dias to prevent Jamal Musiala putting Bayern in front.

Rodri then showed the forwards how it is done as the Spaniard took aim from long range on his weaker left foot and curled a sumptuous shot into the top corner.

Bayern picked up Sommer in the January window as an emergency measure after Manuel Neuer's season was ended by a skiing accident.

The Swiss international proved the value of that move with a number of vital saves to keep Bayern in the tie, starting with an outstretched leg to deny Ilkay Gundogan.

Leroy Sane was also returning to the Etihad after four years at City and three times the Bayern winger came close to haunting his former club either side of half-time.

Sane flashed a shot wide from distance before the break and was denied by two big saves from Ederson early in the second half.

Bayern were made to regret not making their bright start to the second period count as Matthijs de Ligt and Kingsley Coman had headers from close range blocked by desperate City defending.

Instead, City turned the screw in the final quarter to take a potentially decisive lead to Bavaria next week.

Haaland showed there is more to his game than goals with a perfectly weighted cross for Silva to head in City's second 20 minutes from time.

Sommer then produced a fine stop low to his left to turn Julian Alvarez's shot to safety.

But City were not to be denied their third and Haaland his goal as the Norwegian stretched out a telescopic leg to turn John Stones' knockdown beyond Sommer.

Alvarez fired another effort inches wide and Sommer needed finger tips to turn over Rodri's header as City went in search of a final flourish.

But Bayern will need one of the Champions League's all-time great comebacks in eight days' time if City are to be denied a third consecutive semi-final.

Haaland hits 45 as Man City demolish Bayern

Thomas Tuchel will face a stern challenge in his first Champions League (CL) match in charge as Bayern Munich take on tournament favourites Manchester City. Sacked as Chelsea coach in September 2022, Tuchel and Pep Guardiola will reignite their rivalry at the European stage, having last met in the competition in the final of the 2021 edition, with Chelsea winning the Champions League. In the other tie of the night, former champions Benfica take on Inter Milan in Lisbon.

<h2>Pep and Tuchel re-ignite rivalry</h2>

Guardiola will be eyeing a piece of revenge on his opposite number while he also faces his former side when City and Bayern meet at the Etihad Stadium. The two sides will meet for the seventh time in the history of the competition, with Guardiola part of the roster in four of those meetings for either side. Both City and Bayern have won three matches each with Bayern’s last win on the Blue side of Manchester coming in September 2013.

Domestically both City and Bayern have been facing a tough title challenge as Arsenal lead the table in Premier League, while Borussia Dortmund are only two points behind the record German champions in the Bundesliga. While much will be decided in the second league, the contest will also see Joao Cancelo make his return to the Etihad having left on loan in the January transfer window.

In the other contest of the night, two-time champions Benfica will take on Inter Milan Lisbon. Both sides will have a golden opportunity to make the final four of the competition, having gone without glory for a long time. Not since 1962 have Benfica tasted glory in the competition while Inter’s success also came in the same period. Inter last won the competition in 2010 under José Mourinho and will have the golden opportunity to bring back the glory days.

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Ederson; Akanji, Ruben Dias, Ake; Stones, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Grealish; Haaland

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:

Sommer; Pavard, De Ligt, Upamecano, Davies; Goretzka, Kimmich, Sane, Musiala, Coman; Muller

Champions League: Thomas Tuchel faces stern Man City challenge in first European contest; Benfica host Inter

Manchester City are desperate to win their first Champions League but desire alone will not be enough to claim success in Europe's top competition, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Tuesday's quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich. Guardiola has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups at City but European success has eluded the manager who won the trophy twice as Barcelona manager.

Under the Spanish manager, City have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for six straight seasons, with the English club's best finish being runners-up in 2021.

When asked how much he wanted to win the Champions League title with City, Guardiola on Monday told reporters, "a lot".

"We want to try. It is an honour to be here against an elite club in Bayern Munich. We will not take it for granted. We have to play two games. Starting tomorrow," he added. "The question has been coming every single season. We try every single season. Teams you face are also good too and want to win too. My dream is to live it again. We want to try but that doesn't mean we are going to win.

"Michael Jordan won six NBA titles, how many years did he play? 16."

Defender Ruben Dias echoed his manager's sentiments, saying the tournament was "special" for City.

"We really want to be in it and to see it through. It will be a difficult match, but it is what the competition is all about, beating the best," Dias told reporters. "We are happy to be here. Every season the work you have to do is to stay in competitions - the Premier League, the Champions League, all the cups - the biggest goal is to stay in competitions as long as you can."

On Tuesday, Guardiola and City will come up against Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel in the Champions League for the first time since the German manager's Chelsea team beat them in the 2021 final.

"(The 2021 final) was a tight game but we forget it and we try again," Guardiola said. "Sometimes you win when you deserve to, sometimes you lose. I don't live in the past. It's part of the game."

Tuchel took charge of Bayern last month, following the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann.

"I try to figure out the quality they have in all departments. It would have been difficult with Julian Nagelsmann and also will be difficult against Tuchel," Guardiola said. "I don't pay that much attention, more attention on what I do with my team.

"Tuchel is a creative manager. Good build up, good connections between players with good runners who attack the spaces."

Champions League: 'We really want to win it,' - Manchester City's Pep Guardiola on clash against Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich overran a hapless Borussia Dortmund to win Der Klassiker 4-2 on Saturday as three goals in the opening 23 minutes helped them reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga and hand new coach Thomas Tuchel a winning start.

The Bavarians, who face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals on April 11, were in ominous form as they went back into top spot on 55 points, leaving Dortmund two behind in second place with eight matches remaining.

With Tuchel, who also coached Dortmund from 2015-2107, having replaced Julian Nagelsmann on the Bayern bench, the hosts were all over their title rivals from the start.

They went in front thanks to Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel's 13th-minute howler when he completely miskicked his attempt to clear a Dayot Upamecano punt from the Bayern half and saw the ball roll into the net for an own goal.

Before Dortmund managed to regroup, Bayern scored again with Thomas Mueller turning the ball in with his hip at the far post after a Joshua Kimmich corner was headed on by Matthijs de Ligt in the 18th.

Kobel's comeback from a five-week injury break turned into a complete nightmare five minutes later as he punched a Leroy Sane shot into the path of Mueller to score an easy tap-in that left the Dortmund players in complete disbelief.

The visitors' ordeal was not over, with Bayern scoring seemingly at will and Kingsley Coman racing in to slot in their fourth goal six minutes after the restart.

With Dortmund's defence torn to shreds and club bosses frozen in their seats at the Allianz Arena, Bayern never took their foot off the gas.

Some sloppy finishing, however, saw them squander half a dozen golden chances in the second half before Dortmund struck twice late in the game, with an Emre Can penalty in the 72nd minute and a stoppage-time effort from Donyell Malen.

Tuchel, who previously also coached Paris St Germain and Chelsea, could not have dreamt of a better start with Bayern on course for a record-stretching 11th league crown.

Bayern Munich set to sack manager Julian Nagelsmann, ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel likely to replace him

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored against his former club as Bayern Munich ended the Champions League hopes of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, beating the French club 2-0 in their last-16 second leg to reach the quarter-finals.

Choupo-Moting, who featured for PSG in their 1-0 Champions League final loss to Bayern in Lisbon in 2020, sidefooted the ball home after Thomas Mueller dispossessed Marco Verratti inside his own penalty area.

Substitute Serge Gnabry scored in the last minute of regular time to wrap a 3-0 aggregate victory for the six-time European champions.

Bayern reached the last eight for the fourth straight year, while PSG will need to wait at least another season to lift the coveted trophy for the first time.

The best chance of a tight opening half fell to PSG's Vitinha, who won the ball when Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer attempted to dribble out of a busy penalty area.

Vitinha was presented with an empty goal, but his rolled effort allowed Matthijs de Ligt to clear the ball off the line.

Bayern roared out of the blocks after half-time, but PSG were let off by the clumsy feet of Choupo-Moting, who tripped before shooting and then stood in the way of a goal-bound effort from Joshua Kimmich.

The Cameroon striker looked to have redeemed himself in the 52nd minute, but his header from a curling Jamal Musiala cross was chalked off for offside against Mueller.

Bayern continued to push and PSG's dam broke on 61 minutes, with Choupo-Moting doing the damage. Mueller robbed the ungainly Verratti in the box, clipped the ball to Leon Goretzka, who squared for Choupo-Moting to double his side's two-legged advantage.

PSG centre-back Sergio Ramos had a chance to equalise just two minutes later, but his powerful header was brilliantly palmed away by Sommer.

Gnabry put the result beyond doubt, racing onto Joao Cancelo's pass before firing into the far corner left-footed. Sadio Mane looked to have scored a third for the home side in injury time, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Choupo-Moting helps Bayern past PSG, into Champions League last eight

With two places in the Champions League quarterfinal up for grabs, Wednesday (March 8) evening will have two mouth-watering contests on offer. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will have to come from behind against Bayern Munich as they try to book a last-eight berth while the same goes for Tottenham Hotspur, as they host AC Milan in another crunch affair in London.

<h3>PSG hunt for a place in last eight</h3>

PSG will have a big task in their hands as they make their way to the Allianz Arena to face the record Bundesliga champions for a place in the quarterfinal. The French side lost the first leg 0-1 at home and will have to at least score once to overcome the deposit. However, the biggest drawback for them will be the absence of Neymar and Achraf Hakimi. While the Brazilian is to miss the rest of the season with an injury, Hakimi has been involved in a rape case and is undergoing a trial.

Bayern on the flip side are having some battle both domestically and in Europe as they look to consolidate their position in the second leg. Currently sitting top of the pile in the Bundesliga on goal difference, they will be aware of the fact that the Champions League tie is far from over. In the other clash of the night, Spurs will play host to AC Milan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having trailed 0-1 from the first leg. Both the teams lost their weekend matches as Spurs were dismantled 0-1 by Wolves while Milan lost 1-2 against Fiorentina.

Champions League: Wounded PSG face Bayern in Germany; Spurs host AC Milan in crunch second leg

Kylian Mbappe became Paris Saint-Germain's all-time top scorer with his 201st goal for the club as the Ligue 1 leaders warmed up for their crunch trip to Bayern Munich with a 4-2 win over Nantes on Saturday.

The France superstar had equalled Edinson Cavani's previous record mark of 200 goals with a brace in last week's win at Marseille and went one better by netting in stoppage time at the Parc des Princes.

PSG had earlier squandered a two-goal lead, with Lionel Messi putting them ahead and a Jaouen Hadjam own goal making it 2-0 inside 17 minutes before Nantes fought back to draw level.

Ludovic Blas pulled one back for the visitors and Ignatius Ganago equalised, but Mbappe set up Danilo Pereira to put PSG back in front on the hour mark and then claimed his record-breaking goal late on.

Mbappe reached the record in just 247 appearances since signing from Monaco aged 18 in 2017.

Uruguay star Cavani needed 298 games, and seven years, to establish the previous record in 2020.

The 24-year-old Mbappe was handed a trophy by the club after the game to mark his record in an on-field presentation.

"I play to make history and I have always said I wanted to make history in France, in the capital of my country, in my city, and I am doing that. It's magnificent, but there is still a lot to be done," Mbappe, who finished the game as captain, told broadcaster Canal Plus.

"For me, as a native Parisian, this is special. If someone had said to me I would score the goal to beat the record while wearing the captain's armband, I would not have believed it."

The result saw PSG open up a lead of 11 points at the top of Ligue 1 before nearest rivals Marseille play on Sunday, and before the Qatar-owned club go to Bayern for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

PSG trail 1-0 from the first leg against the Bavarians and failure to progress to the quarter-finals in Europe would put a major dampener on the end of their season.

<h2>Hakimi watches from stands</h2>

Injured Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi watched from the stands at the Parc des Princes a day after he was charged with rape following accusations made by a 24-year-old woman.

Neymar was also a spectator and will not be back for the match against Bayern, while centre-back Presnel Kimpembe is set to miss the remainder of the season with an achilles injury.

Coach Christophe Galtier lost two more defenders to injury in the second half against Nantes, with skipper Marquinhos and stand-in right-back Nordi Mukiele both having to come off.

Before the game there was a minute's applause for Just Fontaine, the legendary former France striker who scored 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup and who passed away on Wednesday aged 89.

Fontaine also coached PSG, leading them to promotion to the top tier of French football in 1974.

The Parisians went ahead in the 12th minute, with Messi turning in a deflected low cross from Nuno Mendes to score his 13th Ligue 1 goal this season.

The unfortunate Hadjam's own goal had PSG cruising, but a Blas shot that surprised Gianluigi Donnarumma just after the half-hour mark brought Nantes back into the game and Cameroonian forward Ganago's header made it 2-2 before the break.

PSG had also blown a two-goal lead in their last home game against Lille a fortnight ago before recovering to win 4-3, and they repeated the feat here with Mbappe playing a starring role.

His assist was headed in by Danilo to make it 3-2 just before the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul on Mukiele, only for a VAR check to rule that the contact had taken place outside the box.

It looked like Mbappe would be made to wait for his record before he struck right at the end with a finish on the turn.

Earlier Lens missed the chance to climb above Marseille into second place as they drew 1-1 at home to northern rivals Lille, for whom Canada star Jonathan David grabbed the equaliser.

Mbappe becomes PSG's top goal scorer in win over Nantes

Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin are piling up a serious challenge at the summit of the Bundesliga as they try to dethrone the decade-long rein of Bayern Munich. The serial winners of the German crown, the 2022-23 season looks more than ever to see the end of the road for Bayern if both Dortmund and Union continue their serious title charge. Also not to discount RB Leipzig and SC Freiberg who also have an outside chance of winning the title.

Do Dortmund have enough in the tank?<o:p></o:p>

At the time of writing, Borussia Dortmund sit top of the Bundesliga table with 49 points and are three clear of second place Bayern. The Yellow-Black army have all the talent in the world to go all the way to conquer the title despite the departure of Erling Haaland to Manchester City. The likes of Jude Bellingham and Karim Adeyemi have been the center of attraction for the title challenge for Dortmund.

<h3>Union Berlin also in tussle<o:p></o:p></h3>

Union Berlin’s unlikely title challenge could be compared to Leicester City’s triumph in the Premier League (PL) in 2016 when they went all the way to conquer glory. While there is still a big way to go in the race, Union too will look to defy the odds and go all the way. Christopher Trimmel has accounted for five assists this season while Sheraldo Becker is the highest scorer for them with seven goals. Even if Union fall short of the title, a Champions League group stage for next season looks all but sealed for a club that resided in the second tier of Germany not so long ago.

The Bavarians are missing the services of their former talisman and current Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski, who scored in tons for them. At this stage last season, Lewandowski had 27 goals to his name and was the outright top scorer in the Bundesliga. This season, Jamal Musiala with 11 goals tops the scoring chart, 16 less than Lewandowski as goals have clearly been the issue for them. Defensively, Bayern still have the best defense in the league having conceded just 21 goals.

While RB Leipzig and Freiberg will look to put their names in the hat as well, the real title challenge, for now, stands between the three teams that have topped the chart at some point of the season in the Bundesliga.

Are Dortmund, Union finally ready to dethrone Bayern Munich after decade-long rein as German Champions?

French football player Kylian Mbappe has been officially ruled out of the first leg of PGS's UEFA Champion League's tie against Bayern Munich. The French Champions confirmed that the 24-year-old will be sidelined for at least three weeks due to a thigh injury.

UEFA Champions League: Huge blow for PSG as Mbappe out of clash against Bayern

Kylian Mbappe faces three weeks out with a thigh injury and will miss the first leg of Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich on February 14, his club announced Thursday.

The France star was hurt during the first half of Wednesday's 3-1 win at Montpellier in Ligue 1 having earlier had two penalties saved.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier had initially suggested Mbappe had suffered a knock to the back of the knee rather than a muscle injury, but tests have since confirmed the true extent of the problem.

"After undergoing tests, Kylian Mbappe suffered an injury to the left thigh at the level of the femoral biceps," said a club statement.

If he misses three weeks as expected, Mbappe can also expect to sit out next midweek's French Cup last-16 tie against Marseille and faces a race against time to return for a potentially pivotal Ligue 1 game away to the same opponents at the end of this month.

However, PSG will hope that Mbappe, who has scored 25 goals in 26 appearances for his club this season, will be fit for the second leg against Bayern in Germany on March 8.

The news is a bitter blow for the French giants, who are desperate to avoid a repeat of what happened last season when they were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Real Madrid.

The Qatar-owned club have become used to injury crises involving their star players ahead of key Champions League games in recent years.

A fractured metatarsal prevented Neymar from playing a full part in a last-16 defeat to Madrid in 2018 and a similar problem ruled him out of their loss to Manchester United at the same stage a year later.

PSG are hoping to win European club football's most prestigious competition for the first time after over a decade of trying since the Qatari takeover of 2011.

They have been eliminated in the last 16 in four of the last six seasons, although they reached the final in 2020, losing to Bayern in Lisbon, and were beaten semi-finalists a year later.

PSG convinced Mbappe to stay at the club last year and sign a new contract despite interest in him from Real as they hoped he would lead them to glory in Europe.

Mbappe's injury comes just over a month after he starred at the World Cup in Qatar, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with eight goals including a hat-trick in the final, which France lost on penalties to Argentina.

The timing is even more of a blow for PSG after they endured a frustrating end to the January transfer window on Tuesday when they failed to process the paperwork to complete the loan signing of Hakim Ziyech from Chelsea.

The Moroccan winger had already passed a medical and was set to add an extra option in attack for Galtier after the departure of another forward, Pablo Sarabia, to Wolverhampton Wanderers.&nbsp;

PSG star Kylian Mbappe ruled out of UCL tie against Bayern Munich

Winter deadline day transfer deals have changed the dynamics of a league on many occasions, and this time, it’s no different. Every club regardless of it being a mid-table or a topper are in race to sign their dream players as the transfer window closes tonight. In the latest developments, Manchester City’s wingback Joao Cancelo has joined German giants Bayern Munich on a loan deal with an option to buy in the following summer. Whereas, Premier League table toppers Arsenal have also landed Italy and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho in a £12 million deal.

Joao heads to Germany

Unlike many other top clubs across Europe, Bayern did some good business in this transfer window by landing some promising talents, and in Joao, an experienced player. Cancelo’s loan move with an option to buy surprised a lot of City or even football fans in general.

For the defending champions, Cancelo made 16 league starts this season but was&nbsp;nowhere to be seen following a defeat against rivals Manchester United, missing next three games. With the emergence of young Nathan Ake and 18-year-old Rico Lewis in the fullback area, Joao started in just three out of ten games since the end of FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

As reported by the Reuters, Cancelo, in the latest news conference said, "My decision had to do with the playing time that had been little in recent weeks. There was speculation that my relationship with (Manchester City coach) Pep (Guardiola) was not the best but fact is I wanted to play more.

"I wanted to start this new adventure as soon as possible," Cancelo added. "I enjoyed my time at City and I am still under contract with the club so I don't see it as a final departure. I will now focus only on my five months and see what happens then."

Gunners gunning ahead with Jorginho deal

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Premier League leaders Arsenal are closing in on completing a deal with Chelsea for midfielder Jorginho worth £12m, as reported by famous Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. As per him, the personal terms have been agreed and the contract until 2024 with option of another year is also signed. The 31-year-old would have become a free agent in the summer as his contract with Chelsea was about to be expired.

Deadline Day Transfer: Bayern Munich lands Joao Cancelo, PL table toppers Arsenal close on Jorginho deal

Bayern Munich want to sign a goalkeeper following the injury to Germany captain Manuel Neuer but the options on the transfer market in the winter period are limited, coach Julian Nagelsmann said on Thursday. Speaking in Doha, Qatar, at the end of a one-week training camp ahead of the Bundesliga season restart next week, Nagelsmann said that, while 34-year-old Sven Ulreich was ready to step in to replace Neuer, the club still needed another keeper.

"Our job is to look at the market, although it's difficult in the winter (transfer window) to find goalkeepers as there are not that many options on the market that make sense for us," Nagelsmann told a news conference.

"It is a complex market, the one for goalkeepers. We are trying to do something. Ulreich has done it well in training here but we are obliged to bring in another keeper, irrespective of who is number one and two."

Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a broken bone following a skiing accident. The keeper, who was part of the Germany team that crashed out of the World Cup in the first round, suffered a lower leg fracture.

Nagelsmann said the choices behind Ulreich were limited to younger keepers, including 19-year-old Johannes Schenk, with no experience of top league matches. Bayern, top of the Bundesliga, resume their hunt for a record-extending 11th straight league crown against RB Leipzig on Jan. 20. Their only warm-up match is against Austria's Salzburg on Friday.

"We want to put ourselves on track for the big match against top league rival Leipzig next week," he said. "We plan it as a full match for those most likely to be in the starting 11."

Bayern, who are four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and six ahead of third-placed Leipzig, face Paris St Germain in the Champions League round of 16 next month.

Former German goalkeeper and current CEO of Bayern Munich Oliver Kahn said Manuel Neuer suffered a season-ending injury because he 'never listens to anyone'. “Manuel decided to take a little break from the tournament. He needed rest after such stress. Neuer is a big fan of alpine skiing and went to the slopes," Kahn was quoted as saying by RG. "I know that he was warned several times that there was very little snow, stones were sticking out everywhere and it was dangerous to ride, but Neuer never listens to anyone." Kahn, a winner of eight Bundesliga titles added that Bayern Munich had a problem to solve and that is to find Neuer's replacement for the season. "We've lost our goalkeeper before the end of the season. It's terrible because he is one of the best in the world. A very serious loss for the team. But we believe that the recovery will go well and his return too, but for now, we have to solve the problem of a replacement. But this is temporary. Manuel will be back.” Read more: Germany captain Manuel Neuer breaks leg while skiing, ruled out for remainder of Bundesliga season Notably, after Germany suffered another shock exit from the World Cup, Neuer headed to the Alps to ski and clear his mind. Neuer took to Instagram last week to share the news of the accident and the subsequent successful surgery. "Hey guys, what can I say, the end of the year could have definitely gone better," read the Instagram post. "While I was trying to get my head clear while ski touring, I suffered a lower leg fracture. Yesterday's surgery went well. Many thanks to the doctors! However, it hurts to know that the current season is over for me. Take care! Your Manuel." The accident could have been avoided if Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann had not given extended time off to the players who were still reeling from the repercussions of an early World Cup exit. Bayern Munich currently sit atop the Bundesliga table with 34 points from 15 matches. However, with Freiburg and Salzburg breathing down the neck of the Munich-based club, Neuer's clutch ability to perform outrageous saves will be missed. Rumours of a rift in the German dressing room continue to grow. According to German outlet Bild, the team is divided into two factions - the Bayern Munich camp and the rest of the squad. Coach Hansi Flick has been accused of harbouring a Bayern Munich bias.&nbsp;

The publication said that problems started before the Japan game. Senior players such as Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka were in favour of 'covering-the-mouth' to protest against FIFA banning the 'One love' armbands. However, other players did not want to take part in the demonstration.&nbsp;

The situation was aggravated after Flick made some 'not-so-clever' substitution calls.&nbsp;

"During the Japan game, many couldn’t understand Flick’s decision to sub-Goretzka on for Gündogan, which ultimately led to a loss of control and balance. Internally, it was criticized as a ‘harmony substitution’ to keep Goretzka happy. Gündogan was furious," reported Bild.&nbsp;

Flick, as Bayern Munch manager had coached the likes of&nbsp;&nbsp;Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane. The German national team also had the core of Bayern Munich, which could have added to the feeling of alienation, the report claimed.&nbsp;

"Would you say that the One-Love armband could have been handled better? The fact is, according to our sources, not every player was OK with the gesture before the Japan game and they worried that it would cause issues in the team," she asked Bierhoff.&nbsp;

Annoyed at the question, Bierhoff said, “You can certainly discuss that at some point. But after three games that have taken place on the pitch, do you think that One Love armband has played such a big role?”

Champions League last 16 complete fixtures: Liverpool to face Real Madrid, PSG up against Bayern Munich

Goals by Sadio Mane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Benjamin Pavard earned Bayern Munich a 3-0 win at already-eliminated&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;on Wednesday as the German giants clinched a spot in the Champions League round of 16 as group winners.

Bayern top Group C on 15 points, five ahead of Inter Milan who also reached the knockout stage after a 4-0 win against Viktoria Plzen earlier on Wednesday, a result that eliminated&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;in the group stage for the second year in a row. With&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;having nothing riding on their game, it did not take long for Bayern to open the scoring through Mane 10 minutes into the first half after receiving a brilliant long pass from Serge Gnabry.

Mane beat Spanish defender Hector Bellerin in a 50-metre race and scored with a tidy finish. Bayern doubled their lead in similar fashion 21 minutes later, catching the Barca defence sleeping and out of position.

Joshua Kimmich passed to Gnabry who, from the edge of the box, set up Choupo-Moting to score his sixth goal in the Champions League this season.

Barca thought they had a penalty after a clash between Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt and Polish striker Robert Lewandowski but the referee, after a VAR check, ruled that there had been no foul. Bayern took their foot off the gas after the break and had a Gnabry goal ruled out for offside in the 56th minute.

Pavard scored the third goal in the very last play of the game, with a close-range strike from a corner. "The way we won gives us a lot of energy. I don't think Barca were expecting us to be so bold. But you have to do that when you play against&nbsp;Barcelona," Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann told DAZN.

"We scored two lovely goals and added a third at the end. We defended with so much passion. The team made a statement tonight."

Barcelona&nbsp;looked stale and went the full 90 minutes without a single strike on target. "We have to face our new reality, today we didn't even have the level to compete," Barca manager Xavi told Movistar Plus.

"I believe today the psychological side weighed on us, going into the game knowing that we were already out. "We started the season with very high expectations but ended up in a very complicated group and didn't manage to be at the necessary level to compete with them. It's a huge disappointment."

Since winning the Champions League title for the last time in 2015, Barca have reached the semi-finals only once, in 2019. They lost 8-2 to Bayern in the 2020 quarter-finals, were knocked out in the round of 16 by PSG in 2021, and failed to make it past the group stage in the last two editions.

Last year, Barca's exit at the group stage came after the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris St Germain and the financial crisis that led to the resignation of the entire club board.

This season, however, following the big-money signings of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde, a better outcome had been expected. They have won only one of their five games in the group so far and will go into the second-tier Europa League after ending up third in the group for the second year in a row.

Barcelona exit UCL after Inter Milan beat Viktoria Plzen, later get thrashed by Bayern Munich

Barcelona will be eager to show everyone that they are better than rivals Bayern Munich when the two teams face off in the Champions League on Wednesday, manager Xavi Hernandez said.

Barcelona were beaten 2-0 by Bayern in last month's Group C fixture, a result that Xavi said was not a true reflection of the team's talent.

But having won only one of their four matches in Europe this season, Xavi wants his team to show their true worth at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

"We have to show ourselves that even if we are knocked out (of the Champions League) we are a good team and we can compete against the best teams out there," Xavi told a news conference on Tuesday.

"That game in Munich was a disgrace because we deserved much more. That was an accident because we lacked the final touch.

Even though Barcelona had more possession than Bayern and outshot them 18-13, the German side scored twice in four minutes against the run of play to secure the win.

Barca's indifferent form in the competition has left them in danger of being eliminated early in the competition as they are third in the standings with four points, eight points behind leaders Bayern and three behind second-placed Inter Milan with two group matches remaining.

Inter host bottom-placed Viktoria Plzen, who have yet to score a point, in the other group fixture on Wednesday.

If the Italians win, they would qualify for the last 16 and knock out Barca thanks to a better head-to-head record. Bayern have already secured their place in the next round.

"Regardless of what happens in Milan, we have to win. We have to play as if only our game matters, to show that we are better than Bayern," said Xavi.

"I don't like to talk about miracles... we have a small hope. Though we are in a very uncomfortable situation.

"The numbers are all against us. But ... unexpected things can happen."

Barcelona, who also exited the tournament following the group stage last season, suffered another setback when they were handed a 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in this month's El Clasico.

Xavi said that he and his players will watch the Inter game together in the changing room, but refused to send a message to the Viktoria Plzen players ahead of the match.

"I already have too much in hand to start playing the coach of other teams," Xavi laughed.

"We have not been at the level that we wanted in some games. I have the feeling that we (at times we) had it in our hands and now it is not up to us. So we are facing this situation only because of our own mistakes."

Champions League: Barcelona out to prove they are better than Bayern Munich, says head coach Xavi

Borussia Dortmund's Anthony Modeste headed in a last-gasp equaliser to complete a sensational two-goal comeback and snatch a 2-2 draw against visitors Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga's Der Klassiker on Saturday.&nbsp;

The 34-year-old Modeste, who had faced massive criticism after netting just once in the league following his arrival this season, headed in at the far post with the last touch of the game after also setting up their first goal, to rescue a point and keep Bayern off top spot.

He also snapped Dortmund's eight-game losing run to Bayern in all competitions as the Bavarians ended the match with 10 men after Kingsley Coman was sent off in the 90th minute for a second booking.

Bayern, who face Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Wednesday, are on 16 points as many as Dortmund, with Union Berlin and Freiburg, both on 17, in action on Sunday.

"Had we scored that third goal then the game would have been over," Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

"But then we concede a goal out of a not-so-dangerous situation. We definitely should have defended better. The last two or three minutes, with a player less, it was an open game. It is frustrating for us but that's the way it is. Overall it's a fair result."

Goretzka threaded a low shot through a crowded box to open the scoring with Bayern's first chance of the game in a high-intensity encounter in front of a sold-out 81,000 crowd at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.

Dortmund, who host Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday, were equally aggressive but also had only few shots on target in the entire first half, including a clever Raphael Guerreiro effort that tested keeper Manuel Neuer.

The visitors shot out of the blocks after the break and Sadio Mane should have done better with a diving header in front of an empty goal from close range in the 49th.

Leroy Sane quickly made amends in the 53rd for his teammate's miss, unleashing a fierce shot with Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer getting a hand on the ball but unable to turn it wide.

With Bayern thinking they had done enough to win, 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko set up a dramatic finale when he picked up a Modeste pass to beat keeper Neuer and become the youngest scorer in the history of Der Klassiker.

Neuer managed to claw away a Modeste effort on the line in the 83rd but was beaten when the French striker headed in deep in stoppage time.

Der Klassiker ends level as Dortmund's Modeste snatches an equaliser at death

Liverpool eased to a comfortable 2-0 win in the 'Battle of Britain' against Rangers in the Champions League group games on Tuesday while Napoli underlined their credentials with an impressive 6-1 thrashing of Ajax in Amsterdam.&nbsp;

On a night when a minute's silence was held before every match in tribute to the 131 victims of the Indonesia stadium tragedy, Bayern Munich and Club Brugge also made it three wins from three while Inter edged Barcelona in a tight contest in Milan.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool went into their Group A game against the Scottish champions on the back of just three wins in their first nine Premier League and Champions League games of the season.

But they settled quickly when Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a sublime free-kick to put the home side ahead after just seven minutes. Rangers' 40-year-old goalkeeper Allan McGregor produced some fine saves, including four to deny Darwin Nunez his first goal for Liverpool, to keep his side in the hunt at half-time.

Seven minutes into the second half, however, Leon King's challenge caught the legs of Luis Díaz to give away a penalty. Mohamed Salah stepped up and struck the ball down the middle as McGregor was unable to repeat the penalty-saving heroics he produced against Napoli.

"It was exactly what we needed. It was a super, solid performance," said Klopp, who switched from his usual 4-3-3 formation to a 4-2-3-1.

"Sometimes you have to change things."

Napoli stay top of Group A after another impressive victory, coming from behind to hammer Ajax 6-1 to take their tally of goals to 13 from three matches.&nbsp;

Mohammed Kudus put the home side ahead in the ninth minute but Luciano Spalletti's side bounced back with first-half goals from Giacomo Raspadori, Giovanni Di Lorenzo&nbsp;and Piotr Zielinski.

Raspadori added his second two minutes after the restart and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added the fifth just after the hour.&nbsp;Ajax's night was made worse when captain Dusan Tadic was sent off after collecting a second yellow card and Giovanni Simeone closed out the win.

Bayern moved to the edge of qualification with a third successive win, thrashing Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in Group C.&nbsp;

Liverpool eased to a comfortable 2-0 win in the 'Battle of Britain' against Rangers in the Champions League group games on Tuesday while Napoli underlined their credentials with an impressive 6-1 thrashing of Ajax in Amsterdam.

Liverpool eased to a comfortable 2-0 win in the 'Battle of Britain' against Rangers in the Champions League group games on Tuesday while Napoli underlined their credentials with an impressive 6-1 thrashing of Ajax in Amsterdam. It was a super, solid performance," said Klopp, who switched from his usual 4-3-3 formation to a 4-2-3-1. "Sometimes you have to change things." Napoli stay top of Group A after another impressive victory, coming from behind to hammer Ajax 6-1 to take their tally of goals to 13 from three matches. Mohammed Kudus put the home side ahead in the ninth minute but Luciano Spalletti's side bounced back with first-half goals from Giacomo Raspadori, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Piotr Zielinski. Raspadori added his second two minutes after the restart and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added the fifth just after the hour. Ajax's night was made worse when captain Dusan Tadic was sent off after collecting a second yellow card and Giovanni Simeone closed out the win. Bayern moved to the edge of qualification with a third successive win, thrashing Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in Group C. "We were calm, we dominated and we were in total control," said Bayern captain and Manuel Neuer. "When everything is going well, we're almost unstoppable." German international Leroy Sane struck twice, opening the scoring from distance after seven minutes and adding a second five minutes after the break. Champions League: Liverpool edge Rangers as Bayern Munich, Napoli earn dominant victories

On Tuesday, Bayern Munich locked horns with Barcelona in the marquee clash at the UEFA Champions League (UCL) where the Germans scored twice in four minutes against the run of play, courtesy of&nbsp;Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane, to beat the Spanish club&nbsp;2-0 in their&nbsp;Group C face-off.&nbsp;

After the end of proceedings, Barcelona's Spainish manager Xavi reacted to his side's defeat. Without mincing his words, Xavi Hernandes fumed in the press conference and said, "I'm p*ssed off. I'm p*ssed off. I don't like to lose - and we didn't deserve it. I think we were better, we dominated them. We were better. But this is the Champions League."

"The process was good, but the result was bad. It was a golden opportunity to win at this stadium, and we leave with a defeat. I'm p*ssed off," he asserted.

'I'm p*ssed off' - Xavi reacts as Barcelona lose to Bayern Munich in UCL, says 'we were better'

Bayern Munich scored twice in four minutes against the run of play, through Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane, to beat Barcelona 2-0 in their Champions League Group C match on Tuesday.&nbsp;

It was an unhappy return to Munich for Barca striker Robert Lewandowski, the Bavarians' second-highest all-time scorer who left in the summer after eight years, with the Germans now top of their group on six points from two matches.&nbsp;

For Bayern the win could not have come at a better time, following three consecutive draws in the Bundesliga.&nbsp;

"Barca had the better chances in the first half. We had to rely on (keeper) Manuel (Neuer)," Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said. "After the break we were more aggressive. We quickly scored two goals. We basically won because of higher efficiency.&nbsp;

"From our side I am also happy Lewandowski did not score against us tonight," Nagelsmann added.&nbsp;

Barca enjoyed a dream start, boxing the Germans in their own half with relentless pressing and carving out several early scoring chances.&nbsp;

Pedri's shot was blocked by Neuer before Lewandowski fired a volley over the bar in the 17th.&nbsp;

The Pole, who scored 344 goals for Bayern in 375 games, came close again four minutes later, heading on to Neuer from close range.&nbsp;

The visitors did not give Bayern a look-in during the first half, with a hard-working Barca backline double-teaming every Bayern player when they had possession, nipping any planned move in the bud.&nbsp;
