<p>The <em>Barbie</em> trailer features a scene where Barbie (Margot Robbie) stands in front of a world map that had triggered a controversy. In the scene, Margot’s Barbie is with Kate McKinnon (known in the film as “Weird Barbie” as they stand in front of the map. After days of this issue sparking headlines, a spokesperson for the Warner Bros. Film Group spoke to Variety and said, “The map in Barbie Land is a child-like crayon drawing.“The doodles depict Barbie’s make-believe journey from Barbie Land to the ‘real world.’ It was not intended to make any type of statement.”</p>

<p>The said childlike map, has invited criticism for not treating this sensitively, with countries now pulling down the release of <em>Barbie</em>. First, it was Vietnam, and now the Philippines. "We do not grant a license for the American movie Barbie to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line," local media cited Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Department of Cinema, a government body in charge of licensing and censoring foreign films.&nbsp;Vietnam called for <em>Barbie</em> to not screen in the country as it believes it violates the country’s sovereignty.</p>

<p>These two countries could make a turnaround if Warner Bros. studio was to make any amends to the controversial scene, edit or rework the same. But that would mean reapplying for certification in China where the fantasy drama has been approved and given a go-ahead. Considering China is a huge market for films, this looks difficult for Warner Bros.</p>

<p>In defence, Warner Bros. studio wants everyone to not take the scene too seriously and just like a doodle that some child would conjure out of fantasy or wild imagination. If you look carefully, the map looks like a child’s imagination as&nbsp;hashtags float around Earth’s&nbsp;oceans and continents are drawn with maroons and yellows. There are chalk-scribbled dolphins and whatnot. But countries have a problem that the world map has been organised in a way to appease China. <p>While he went on to suggest that WB should edit out the offending scene, this might create problems for the studio in China, a much more crucial market where it has already been cleared for release.</p>

<p>Margot Robbie reached Seoul on Sunday (July 2) to attend her film <em>Barbie's </em>Korean premiere. The presenters of the event surprised the actress with a special Barbie-themed cake,&nbsp;topped with what appeared to be a bejewelled tiara and a single pink candle,&nbsp;to mark her 33rd birthday.</p>

<p>Joined by director Greta Gerwig and co-star America Ferrera, the actress had a jolly birthday celebration on stage as she promoted her much-anticipated film, slated to release on July 21.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Paying homage to two Barbies from the 1990s,&nbsp;Margot wore two Versace looks at the Seoul event. The fashionista&nbsp;re-created the 1985 Day-to-Night Barbie's look right down to the doll's bedazzled phone and&nbsp;white hat.</p>

<p>Later, she unveiled&nbsp;Barbie's evening look by removing her pink blazer and revealing a hot pink tulle skirt paired with a sparkly pink top.</p>

The map depicts the controversial nine-dash line, which was repudiated in an international arbitration ruling by a court in The Hague in 2016. China refuses to recognise the ruling.</p>

<p>In 2019, DreamWorks’ animated film <em>Abominable</em>&nbsp;was banned from domestic distribution in Vietnam and last year, the action movie <em>Unchartered</em>&nbsp;was banned for a similar reason.</p>

<p>"We do not grant a license for the American movie <em>Barbie</em>&nbsp;to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line," local media cited Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Department of Cinema, a government body in charge of licensing and censoring foreign films.</p>

<p>Every Barbie fan associates the dolls with its signature pink colour and of course, no <em>Barbie</em> film would be complete with every shade of pink in the palate on the set. And according to Sarah Greenwood, production designer of the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-starrer, the film had so much pink on the set that it caused an international shortage.</p>

<p>In a recent interview with Architectural Digest published online on Tuesday, Greenwood said that there was an international shortage of the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint while they were constructing the movie set. She added, “The world … ran out of pink.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Previously,&nbsp;Greenwood told IndieWire that “pink became the film’s thesis,” and that when it came to finding the perfect pink, “it was epic dealing with the painters, mixing the right colours”.</p>

<p>To mark Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which is observed in the United States during the month of May, Mattel unveiled the Anna May Wong Barbie doll on Monday. Featuring the Asian American Hollywood trailblazer's trademark bangs, eyebrows and well-manicured nails, the doll sported a red gown with a shiny golden dragon design and cape, inspired by her appearance in the 1934 movie<em> Limehouse Blues</em>.</p>

<p>A video was also shared on Barbie's&nbsp;official Instagram handle with a note, which read, "Never settle for less than centre stage The #Barbie Inspiring Women series is proud to spotlight the courageous life and legacy of Anna May Wong, widely considered the first Chinese American movie star. Earning her first leading role at age 17, she founded her own production company at 19 after growing frustrated at being typecast or sidelined as a supporting character.​"</p>
