The work of five Oscar nominated costume designers including the likes of Barbie, Oppenheimer and poor things are showcased at a new exhibition. The Barbie&nbsp;movie, which will compete for best picture and other honours at Sunday's Oscars, generated a chart-topping $1.4 billion at global box offices in 2023. Co-written by married couple Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, it also changed some attitudes about men and women.

The film moves between Barbie Land, run by President Barbie and other female dolls, and the Real World - a patriarchy ruled by men who provide few opportunities to women.

"My mind instantly flashed to 19-year-old me in college," Liu said of the scene. "Yeah, that's definitely me."

The actor said he felt the movie's aim was to show that patriarchy "is just bad for everyone."

"It affects men because it puts this weird shit in our minds about what we have to be and who we have to be," he said. "And then, obviously, makes it really tough for women."

Dr. Ellen Rome, head of adolescent medicine at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital, sought reactions to the film from about 100 tweens, teens and their parents who visited her clinic after the movie came out.

Most of the kids "picked up on how normative society's patriarchy is,&nbsp;and how it can negatively impact both&nbsp;women and men," Rome said. "Kids at 11,&nbsp;12 and 13 got this."

Boys "saw and could pick up on how inappropriate it was to treat women as objects, or to make negative comments about&nbsp;them," she said.

The boys also wanted a more empowered Ken, she said.

"That he was an accessory wasn't lost on the boys," Rome said. "They wanted Ken to be able to have his own agenda."

Rome said she appreciated that the movie tackled mental health directly. The "stereotypical Barbie" played by Robbie dealt&nbsp;with depression and thoughts of death and worked her way through it.

&nbsp;"They did beautifully&nbsp;addressing the fact that mental health challenges can affect anybody,&nbsp;and that you can do a hero's journey to face that depression&nbsp;and figure out how to empower yourself," she said.

Rome did have some critiques. She said the movie showed little body diversity among the Barbies or the Kens. There were no Kens with obesity, for example.

And, the "weird Barbie" played by Kate McKinnon, "is valued but isolated," Rome said.

Barbie maker Mattel Inc said its consumer research showed that 87 percent viewed the Barbie brand as empowering for girls after the movie's release, and 80% said the brand "showcased body diversity."

One outside survey found the film altered some perceptions about men and women in the workplace.

Resume Builder, a website for job seekers, commissioned a poll of 300 Americans who had seen "Barbie." Fifty-three percent of all viewers said the film improved their opinion of women in the workplace, and 63% of men said the film made them more aware of the partriarchy at work.

The film successfully resonated&nbsp;with diverse audiences and contributed to discussions around representation, feminism, and societal expectations.&nbsp;Outstanding cinematography, production design, costume design, and other technical aspects contributed to the&nbsp;film's overall quality and appeal.&nbsp;

The 2024 People’s Choice Awards took place in Santa Monica, California on Sunday and was hosted by actor Simu Liu. It was aired live on Sunday on NBC, Peacock and E! from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Greta Gierwig's Barbie was chosen by the people as the best film of the year, while the iconic medical drama Grey's Anatomy won the TV show of the year. Gerwig's film Barbie won almost all leading honours in the Movies category. Barbie's win at People's Choice Award is poignant since the summer blockbuster has been mostly shunned this awards season. Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera too won for their performance in Barbie. Other big winners included Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Ice Spice, Beyoncé, Jennifer Aniston, Pedro Pascal and more. Hollywood star Adam Sandler accepted the People’s Icon Award and had everyone in splits as he joked about getting confused about the honour with PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive title. Swift took home the Artist of the Year, Social Media Personality Award and her concert Eras Tour too won the best concert of the year. Her beau Travis Kelce won Athlete Of The Year award. Lenny Kravitz received the Music Icon Award after giving a career-spanning performance. People's Choice Awards 2024: Barbie wins big, Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce honoured; see full list of winners

Everyone was left shocked when nominations for the Academy Awards were announced, and one of the strong contenders of this year's award season Greta Gerwig's Barbie was absent from the major categories. Several stars including actor Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera, have reacted to the snub, and most recently Helen Mirren has shared her views&nbsp;on&nbsp;the Barbie snub.&nbsp;

Mirren, who is the narrator of Greta's movie, has opened up about the movie getting sidelined at the Academy Awards and explained why there is no need to get upset about that.&nbsp;

Speaking at the 2024 American Cinematheque Awards on Thursday (February 15), Helen told ET, “You can’t get upset about things like that, honestly,”

Barbie earned 8 nominations, including one for America Ferrara, who earned her first Academy nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category. Barbie director Greta Gerwig and lead star Margot Robbie not getting nominated at&nbsp;the Academy was a big shock.&nbsp;

Ferrera expressed her disappointment saying, “I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated. Greta (Gerwig) has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

And perhaps people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy, but Margot is a magician as an actress in front of the screen, and it was one of the honours of my career to get to witness her pull off the amazing performance she did. She brings so much heart and humour and depth and joy and fun to the character. In my book, she’s a master.”&nbsp;

Despite the tough competition from Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, Robbie-starrer went on to become a major hit. The film made history by surpassing the $1.342 billion global earnings of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, becoming the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros' history.&nbsp;

Helen Mirren on Academy snub to Barbie: ‘You can’t get upset about things like that’

Trust the Academy to take a jibe at itself for&nbsp;royally snubbing Barbie at the upcoming Oscar Awards 2024. On Tuesday, the Academy dropped a Barbie-themed trailer for the awards ceremony which features this year's host Jimmy Kimmel along with some cast members of the Barbie movie.&nbsp; 
 
Not only does it take a jab at how the Academy failed to recognise Greta Gerwig's film in some major categories but also pokes fun at itself. Along with Kimmel, the hilarious and savage trailer also features Ryan Gosling,&nbsp;America Ferrera, Helen Mirren and Kate McKinnon.&nbsp; 
 
The announcement video has a lost Kimmel finding his way to Weird&nbsp;Barbie's (Kate McKinnon) home asking for her help to find directions to Oscarland. When she draws him a map, he fails to read it and so the two then embark on a journey together to Oscarland. On the way they encounter some nominees, make fun of Matt Damon (Kimmel has to, of course) and then reach their desired destination. 
 
Once they land in&nbsp;Oscarland, America Ferrera appears on the red carpet and delivers a monologue, a nod to her viral Barbie monologue, to encourage Jimmy Kimmel and tell him how tough a job it is to host the Oscars. However, Jimmy gets it wrong and says, “What you’re saying is hosting the Oscars is harder than being a woman," making things awkward for all. 
 
Soon, Ryan Gosling appears and changes the subject to the Oscars' tradition of having In and Out Burgers and fries. Kimmel points out that the Oscars tradition of having the meal comes after winning an Oscar to which Gosling quips he probably will not win it. 
For the uninitiated, Gosling and Ferrera are both nominated for their roles in Barbie in the supporting acting category.&nbsp;

After a combined $2.4 billion global box office take, Barbie&nbsp;and Oppenheimer&nbsp;-- two films linked only by their simultaneous release last July -- are seen as locks for a suite of nods for the 96th Academy Awards, which take place on March 10.

"It continues to be their year, and we expect them to dominate the nominations," Pete Hammond, columnist for industry site Deadline, told AFP.&nbsp;

With its clutch of five Golden Globes and momentum on its side, Oppenheimer -- Christopher Nolan's masterly portrait of the father of the atomic bomb -- appears to have the edge in the race for best picture, the Academy's top prize.

Greta Gerwig's popular Barbie&nbsp;-- a sharp satire about misogyny and female empowerment -- is playing catch-up after an initial burst of awards optimism faded.

The film, which had nine nominations for the Globes, left with just two consolation prizes -- best song and a newly created trophy for box office achievement.&nbsp;

And, said Hammond, it faces an uphill battle to turn its audience gold into major Oscars success.

"Comedies, or something considered lighter, are generally at a disadvantage against something a little heavier," he said.

"So in the world of Barbenheimer, Oppenheimer&nbsp;definitely has the advantage because it's got gravitas; it's important."

Rounding out the best picture category, nominations are widely expected for Martin Scorsese's crime saga Killers of the Flower Moon&nbsp;and Venice Film Festival winner Poor Things,&nbsp;a female-focused take on the Frankenstein myth.&nbsp;

Christmas boarding school tale The Holdovers&nbsp;is already being spoken of as a durable seasonal classic, while Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro,&nbsp;which sees Bradley Cooper in front and behind the camera, also appears well placed.

The well-received French film Anatomy of a Fall,&nbsp;which won two Golden Globes including best screenplay, might fare well in a world where voters no longer seem scared of subtitles.

Between Justine Triet's Anatomy,&nbsp;Gerwig's Barbie&nbsp;and Past Lives,&nbsp;a Korean-American drama by Celine Song, the fight for the Best Picture Oscar could include three works directed by women, a historic first.&nbsp;

Over nine-and-a-half decades of awards, only 19 films by female directors have been nominated for the top prize.

"It could be the biggest year ever for women, in terms of the best picture race," said Hammond.

In the acting categories, the two summer blockbusters seem likely to garner nominations for their stars -- Cillian Murphy as scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, consumed by the devastating consequences of his creation, and Margot Robbie as a perfect doll tormented by morbid thoughts.

Barbenheimer sitting pretty as Oscar nominations to be unveiled

At 2024 BAFTA Awards, Oppenheimer has earned more nominations than Barbie. The Christopher Nolan film has landed 13 nominations with the director’s most successful film in the UK becoming its most-nominated on home soil.

The nominations were announced on Thursday in London and the biopic has been nominated in major categories including best film, director (which could earn Nolan his first-ever BAFTA), leading actor for Cillian Murphy and supporting nods for both Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. 
 
Close behind sits Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things with 11 nominations, including for best film and actress for Emma Stone. 
 
While BAFTA's nods for Oppenheimer and Poor Things are worth celebrating, one can't ignore how it has snubbed Greta Gerwig's blockbuster Barbie across so many categories. 
 
The film has earned five nominations. Margot Robbie has a leading actress nod and Ryan Gosling is among the best supporting actors, but there’s no room in either best film or director, something likely to raise more than a few eyebrows. The five nominations earned by Barbie see it tied with Saltburn&nbsp;which has performance slots for Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike and Jacob Elordi (also nominated for BAFTA Rising Star).&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and Jonathan Glzaer's The Zone of Interest received nine nominations each.&nbsp; 
 
The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will take place on February 18, 2024 at London’s Royal Festival Hall.&nbsp;

The nominations were announced on Thursday in London and the biopic has been nominated in major categories including best film, director (which could earn Nolan his first-ever BAFTA), leading actor for Cillian Murphy and supporting nods for both Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. Close behind sits Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things with 11 nominations, including for best film and actress for Emma Stone. While BAFTA's nods for Oppenheimer and Poor Things are worth celebrating, one can't ignore how it has snubbed Greta Gerwig's blockbuster Barbie across so many categories. The film has earned five nominations. Margot Robbie has a leading actress nod and Ryan Gosling is among the best supporting actors, but there’s no room in either best film or director, something likely to raise more than a few eyebrows. The five nominations earned by Barbie see it tied with Saltburn which has performance slots for Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike and Jacob Elordi (also nominated for BAFTA Rising Star). Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and Jonathan Glzaer's The Zone of Interest received nine nominations each. This year marks a historic moment as it's the first time two international productions, The Zone of Interest&nbsp;and Anatomy of a Fall, have been nominated in a single year, adding a global flair to the competition.

Zanuck Award has been a reliable predictor of the Best Picture winner at the Oscars, with four out of the last five PGA winners subsequently claiming the top honour at the Academy Awards. &nbsp;Hollywood stars are preparing to dance the night away as box office smash Barbie&nbsp;leads nominees for Sunday's Golden Globes, the kickoff to the industry's glitzy awards season.

The first big party in Tinseltown since contentious labour disputes last year, the Globes will honour the best of film and television according to roughly 300 entertainment journalists from around the world. That is a change from the past when about 80 people chose the winners.

Bradley Cooper is in the running for best actor and best director for Leonard Bernstein's biopic Maestro.

The Globes are the first major awards show since Hollywood endured two bitter strikes by writers and then actors last year. The work stoppages shut down film and television production, as well as many red carpet events, for months.

Known as a booze-fueled celebration more relaxed than the Oscars, the Globes nearly became extinct. A 2021 Los Angeles Times report revealed ethical lapses and a lack of diversity among members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that previously voted on the Globes. The 2022 ceremony was scrapped while the organization made reforms.

Last year, the Globes were sold to new owners and the association was disbanded. Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions now operate the awards, with a voting body of 300 journalist members from 75 countries with 60% racial and ethnic diversity.

There are 27 first-time nominees for this year's Globes.

'LOVE A GOOD PARTY'

Hollywood's top talent appears ready to move forward with the Globes, said Chris Gardner, senior staff writer for The Hollywood Reporter.

"They love a good party and they also love the recognition," Gardner said. "This is a show that is looser than the other shows you see on television."

Sunday's ceremony will be hosted by comedian Jo Koy, a comic of Filipino heritage, in his first major hosting gig. It will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed simultaneously for subscribers to Paramount+ with Showtime.

One possible guest in the A-list crowd is pop superstar Taylor Swift. Her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,&nbsp;was nominated in the new category of cinematic and box office achievement. It is unclear whether she will attend the ceremony.

In the television field, "Succession" is expected to win accolades for its final season about the high-stakes battle for control of a global media empire. It leads all nominees with nine nods, followed by the restaurant dramedy The Bear&nbsp;with five.
