Thailand's foreign minister said Wednesday he met with ousted Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi last week and she was in good health in her first known meeting with a foreign envoy since she was detained following a 2021 coup.

Suu Kyi has been seen only once since she was held after the February 1, 2021 putsch -- in grainy state media photos from a bare courtroom in the military-built capital Naypyidaw.

"There was a meeting, she was in good health and it was a good meeting," Don Pramudwinai told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The coup that overthrew Suu Kyi ended Myanmar's brief democratic experiment and plunged the Southeast Asian nation into a bloody turmoil.

The Nobel laureate, 78, was later hit with a raft of charges and jailed by a junta court for a total of 33 years in trials that rights groups slammed as a sham.

Don confirmed that he met with Suu Kyi on Sunday and that she had called for renewed talks to end the crisis.

"She encouraged dialogue," Don said.

The meeting was private and lasted "over one hour", a spokesperson from Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told AFP.

The Philippines' foreign minister said Don briefed ASEAN ministers on his meeting with Suu Kyi but reiterated any independent effort to restart the peace process should be in line with a five-point ASEAN plan agreed two years ago with Myanmar's junta.

"We feel any initiative should be consistent with the five-point consensus. He (Don) just reported on that," Enrique Manalo told reporters.

<h2>Divided ASEAN&nbsp;</h2>

The junta has rebuffed repeated requests by foreign diplomats to meet Suu Kyi and her lawyers were barred from speaking to the media for much of her trial.

She was transferred from house arrest in Naypyidaw to solitary confinement in prison in June last year.

Manalo said it was "good to hear" that Suu Kyi was in good health because "she used to attend our meetings".

The two-day Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting has been dominated by the crisis, which has left the bloc divided about how and whether it should re-engage with Myanmar's junta rulers.

They have been barred from ASEAN's high-level meetings but Thailand hosted the junta's foreign minister last month for controversial "informal talks" that further split the bloc.

ASEAN chair Indonesia and Malaysia did not attend but Cambodia sent a foreign ministry official.

Don said he was advocating for "engagement with the authority in Naypyidaw" to bring an end to the crisis.

"Obviously, we are trying to find a way to settle Myanmar. After two years, there's a development and that should be... positive," he said.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told her counterparts on Wednesday "only a political solution will lead to a durable peace" in Myanmar.

Ministers were still hammering out a joint position on Myanmar on the second day of talks but a joint communique was expected by the end of the day, a Southeast Asian diplomat told AFP.

Don "visited here just for a day trip and met with the commander in chief" Min Aung Hlaing, a senior Myanmar military official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"I didn't know about any meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," he said, using a Burmese honorific and without detailing when Don had visited Myanmar.

The military has cited alleged widespread voter fraud during elections in November 2020 as a reason for its coup, which sparked huge protests and a bloody crackdown.

Those polls were won resoundingly by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy.

International observers said at the time the polls&nbsp;were largely free and fair.

The NLD was devastated by the coup, with many senior members jailed or sent into hiding.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since, with the junta razing villages and conducting mass extrajudicial killings and air strikes on civilians, according to rights groups.

More than one million people have been displaced by fighting between the junta and opponents of the coup, according to the United Nations.

According to former Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Canberra rejected a judge's order to try Turnell.

The court hearing on Thursday was held in secret in the nation's capital, Naypyitaw. Although a source previously stated that Turnell's offence "relates to an allegation that he had government documents," the precise offence the defendants committed in violation of the official secrets act is still unknown.

On Thursday, attempts to reach a junta representative for comment were unsuccessful. The junta maintains that Myanmar's courts are impartial and that individuals who have been arrested are being treated fairly.

Former president Win Myint -- charged alongside Suu Kyi -- appeared at the court on Monday via video conferencing, the source added.

Suu Kyi and her personal staff have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 since being taken into military custody, her lawyer told AFP last July.

She missed a hearing in September due to illness, and in October, her lawyer said her health had suffered from her frequent appearances before the junta-run court.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen arrived in Myanmar on Friday to an honour guard and red carpet. His visit prompted protests by coup opponents in other parts of the country over fears the visit will grant the military junta more legitimacy.

Many opponents of military rule in Myanmar have claimed that Hun Sen is supporting the junta by making the trip.

On social media, images and videos showed protesters in Depayin, about 300 kilometres north of the capital, Naypyidaw burning a poster of Hun Sen, chanting "Hun Sen don't come to Myanmar. We don't want dictator Hun Sen".

In a speech on Wednesday, Hun Sen urged everyone in Myanmar to exercise restraint and follow the peace plan.

"Brothers in Myanmar, do you want your country to fall into a real civil war or want it solved?" he said.

After a phone call with Hun Sen this week, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said in a Twitter message that only non-political representatives from Myanmar should be invited to ASEAN meetings if there is no significant progress on the peace plan.

In Myanmar, Cambodian PM met with a red-carpet welcome and chants of 'We don't need you'

More than 8000 Myanmar nationals have crossed into India since the country saw a coup on February 1, the Defence Ministry in a statement in Parliament said today.&nbsp; 
 
Over 5,500 individuals have been "pushed back," while over 2500 people have remained in India.&nbsp;

In response to a question, minister of state for Defence Minister Ajay Bhatt said, "At the Indo-Myanmar Border, a post-military coup which came into effect on 01.02.2021, 8486 Myanmar nationals/refugees crossed over into India, out of which 5796 were pushed back and 2690 are still in India."

This is the first time India has given details on the influx of refugees since the coup in the country. Many states in India's northeast have seen an influx of refugees from Myanmar following the coup. The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Mizoram, Zoramthanga, had even called on the centre to accept the incoming refugees from Myanmar. Remember, India is not a party to the UN Refugee Convention of 1951 and its 1967 Protocol and the issue is dealt with administratively by New Delhi.

Earlier this year, the Indian foreign ministry said that it was dealing with the situation "as per our laws and humanitarian considerations". In response to several questions about the situation in Myanmar, the spokesperson for India's ministry of external affairs, Arindam Bagchi, said, "We condemn any use of violence. We believe that the rule of law should prevail. We stand for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar. "

He reiterated New Delhi's stance, calling for the "release of political prisoners" and extending support to "any attempts at resolving the current situation, including through the efforts of ASEAN", pointing out further that, India has been engaging with its "international interlocutors and at the UN Security Council to play a balanced and constructive role."

On Sunday, flash mobs popped up across Yangon and second city Mandalay to commemorate the 1988 uprising -- a massive pro-democracy movement which the military violently quelled by opening fire on protesters and jailing thousands.

Following the calls of an online campaign, red-clad protesters on Sunday flashed an eight-finger salute and carried banners that read "Let's return the old blood debt of 1988 in 2021."

"In 1988, our country sacrificed a lot -- many people lost their lives. But the dictatorship is still alive," said Ko Sai Win, who joined a morning protest in Mandalay.

The 1988 uprising heralded the rise of Suu Kyi, who had returned to Myanmar just before protests kicked off to care for her ailing mother.

Thanks to her stature as the daughter of General Aung San, who fought for independence against the British, and her rousing speeches, Suu Kyi emerged as a pro-democracy icon, later receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

A shadow "National Unity Government" -- formed largely of MPs from her ousted party -- vowed in a statement Sunday to continue the fight for democracy.

British ambassador to Myanmar Pete&nbsp;Vowles also voiced support for the anti-junta movement.

"The UK stood by the people of Myanmar in 1988 and we stand by them today in 2021," he said in a video posted on the British embassy's official Twitter.

The UN General Assembly is expected to approve a resolution calling on Myanmar's junta to restore the country's democratic transition and for all countries&nbsp;"to prevent the flow of arms into Myanmar,"&nbsp;diplomats said.

The draft resolution also condemns deadly violence by security forces and calls on the junta to unconditionally release the ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint "and all those who have been arbitrarily detained, charged or arrested."

The 193-member assembly is scheduled to consider the resolution, which has more than 50 co-sponsors, on Friday afternoon and its sponsors are hoping it will be approved by consensus to send a strong message to the military of global opposition to its Feb 1 takeover and support for a return to Myanmar's democratic transition, though any nation can call for a vote.

The draft resulted from negotiations by a so-called Core Group including the European Union, many Western nations and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations known as ASEAN, which includes Myanmar. A UN diplomat said there is an agreement with ASEAN to seek consensus, but what will happen with ASEAN members if there is a vote remains unclear.

The resolution's approval would mark one of the few times that the UN's most representative body expressed itself against a military coup and called for an arms embargo.

Canada's UN&nbsp;Ambassador Bob Rae, a member of the Core Group, said Thursday that everyone has been working hard "to reach a broad consensus" on the text, and discussions were still underway on whether it would be approved by consensus or be put to a vote.

Myanmar for five decades had languished under strict military rule that led to international isolation and sanctions.

As the generals loosened their grip, culminating in Suu Kyi's rise to leadership in the 2015 elections, the international community responded by lifting most sanctions and pouring investment into the country. Her party was reelected by a landslide in November elections, but the military contends the vote was fraudulent and took over before the new Parliament was seated.

Widespread opposition to the junta's rule began with massive nonviolent protests. After soldiers and police used deadly force to crush the peaceful demonstrations, a low-level armed insurrection has emerged in both the cities and countryside.

UN proposal seeks arms embargo and democracy in Myanmar

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was working to expedite the implementation of a five-point consensus reached by their leaders to deal with the crisis in&nbsp;Myanmar, Singapore's foreign minister said on Tuesday.

"We recognise that implementation of the Five-Point Consensus has been slow and a little disappointing," Vivian Balakrishnan said in written replies to parliamentary questions.

"We are working within ASEAN to expedite this process, with a view to alleviate the humanitarian situation, cease the violence in&nbsp;Myanmar, and set it back on the path of direct negotiation by all stakeholders that will lead to normalcy, peace, and stability for the long term," he said.

In April, ASEAN announced a five-point consensus towards resolving the crisis, though no timeframe was agreed.

Myanmar&nbsp;has been in turmoil since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government on Feb. 1, with almost daily protests and fighting between the army and newly formed militias.

Last month, the United Nations General Assembly called for a stop to the flow of arms to&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;and urged the military to respect November election results and release political detainees, including Suu Kyi.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam and&nbsp;Myanmar's UN&nbsp;Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, who speaks for the country's elected civilian government, voted in support of the resolution, while Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand abstained.

An initial draft UN&nbsp;resolution included stronger language calling for an arms embargo on&nbsp;Myanmar. According to a proposal seen by Reuters in May, nine Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, wanted that language removed.

Balakrishnan said ASEAN would not waiver in its commitment to facilitate and support the process in line with the five-point consensus, although it would not be "quick or easy."

He said Singapore voted in favour of the UN&nbsp;resolution as the key elements of the resolution are consistent with the city-state's position.

He added that Singapore complies strictly with international obligations on international arms sales and transfers, and abides by UN&nbsp;sanctions or embargo against any country.

Residents told AFP that military trucks entered their area and opened fire on a village near the jungle hoping to flush out members of the local defence force.

"We heard the shooting of artillery 26 times," said a villager, who added that anti-junta fighters tried to retaliate but could not fend off the attack.

"They shot everyone who they saw on the road and in the village. They did not just have one target," he said.&nbsp;

Civilians were among the dead, he added.

Villagers waited until Saturday to venture out of their homes to assess the casualties, said a member of the local defence force who helped to organise the collection of bodies.&nbsp;

"We firstly got nine dead bodies and buried them," he told AFP, adding that eight more were found by a different team and also buried the same day.

On Sunday, they found eight more bodies.&nbsp;

"I noticed from their bodies that most of them were shot in the head," he said -- an observation that another man who helped move the dead confirmed to AFP.&nbsp;

The anti-junta fighter said the security presence around Depayin was increasing, displacing thousands of residents who had fled in fear of further military action.

"The army has been hunting us in the jungle since this morning," he said.

Not all those participating in flower protests were full of praise for Suu Kyi.

"I am involved in this campaign because now she is unfairly detained by the military and her civilian rights... and freedom is denied," Thet Swe Win, a 35-year-old activist, told AFP.

"After she is free from her detention, she will have to take full responsibility over&nbsp;her silence concerning the suffering of Rohingya and other ethnic groups."

Czech Republic Prime Minister Andrej Babis sent birthday wishes to Suu Kyi from afar.

"I wish you all the best for your health and strength... We stand with the people of&nbsp;Burma," he said, using a previous name for the country.

The civilian death toll since the coup is estimated to be at least 870 people, according to a local monitoring group, while close to 5,000 protesters are in detention after being arrested.

The UN General Assembly on Friday took the rare step of calling on member states to "prevent the flow of arms" into&nbsp;Myanmar, part of a non-binding resolution condemning the military coup.

The resolution -- which did not go so far as to call for a global arms embargo -- also demands that the military "immediately stop all violence against peaceful demonstrators".

It was approved by 119 countries, with 36 abstaining including China,&nbsp;Myanmar's main ally. Only one country, Belarus, voted against it.

The&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;junta issued a statement on Saturday night rejecting the resolution.

"The acts of interference in the internal affairs which infringe on the (state's) sovereignty shall not be accepted," the statement said.

"Myanmar&nbsp;rejects the said resolution as a whole," it said, adding that it was "based on one-sided sweeping allegations and false assumptions".

Suu Kyi is due back in court next week and has been hit with an eclectic raft of criminal charges, including accepting illegal payments of gold and violating a colonial-era secrecy law.

She went on trial for sedition on Tuesday, but journalists were barred from observing proceedings.

The UN&nbsp;special envoy on Myanmar told the Security Council on Friday that in the absence of a collective international response to the coup, violence was worsening and the running of the state risked coming to a standstill, according to diplomats who attended the private meeting.

Christine Schraner Burgener briefed the 15-member council from Thailand, where she has been meeting regional leaders. She hopes to travel to Myanmar but the military has yet to approve a visit.

"The general administration of the state could risk coming to a standstill as the pro-democracy movement continues in spite of the ongoing use of lethal force, arbitrary arrests and torture as part of the military`s repression," Schraner Burgener said, according to diplomats.

She told diplomats that reports of a continuing crackdown risked undermining momentum toward ending the crisis following a meeting of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on April 25 with the junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

Schraner Burgener, expressing concern about rising violence, cited reports of bomb attacks and of civilians, mostly students from the urban areas, getting weapons training from ethnic minority insurgents.

UN&nbsp;special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, said Min Aung Hlaing had used the summit as a 'propaganda ploy'.

"Indeed, he tried to appear to be what he is not - a legitimate leader," Andrews said in a post on Twitter.

"The good news: Those who ARE legitimate are ready to engage: the National Unity Government."

Ousted members of parliament from Suu Kyi's party, politicians representing ethnic minorities and democracy activists set up the unity government but it has yet to win the international recognition it says it is due.

Protesters in Myanmar took to the streets against the military coup for the fourth consecutive day as authorities used water cannons to quell the anti-coup rally. Watch: The military had imposed martial law in the country after protesters intensified over the weekend. The authorities had imposed nighttime curfew and banned gatherings of more than five people in Yangon and other parts of the country. Despite the restrictions, there were demonstrations even as there were no reports of Aung San Suu Kyi whereabouts. The military has detained several members of the Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party which the military claimed won the November elections due to voter fraud, a claim which has not been independently verified. According to reports, in San Chaung teachers joined the protesters waving the three-finger salute which was the trademark during the Hong Kong protests. Other towns including Kamayut, Naypyidaw also witnessed anti-military protests over a week after the country's junta chief General Min Aung Hlaing seized power in a putsch. The military has imposed a one-year state of emergency. The coup has been heavily criticised by the United States and other nations. New Zealand announced on Tuesday that it was suspending military and political contacts with Myanmar including travel bans on senior military figures as the coup continued to sour relations between the military and international governments. "We do not recognise the legitimacy of the military-led government and we call on the military to immediately release all detained political leaders and restore civilian rule," New Zealand's foreign ministry said, while Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern added, "I think every New Zealander would be devastated to see what we've seen in recent days led by the military." Amid the protests in the country, the UN Human Rights Council said it would will hold a special session on Friday to discuss the Myanmar crisis.
