Scientists are turning to an unlikely ally beneath the ocean surface: sharks.

Researchers at the University of Delaware are fitting sharks with tiny CTD tags that measure temperature, salinity and depth as the animals travel through the Atlantic Ocean.

When the sharks return to the surface, the tags transmit their data to satellites, transforming their natural movements into valuable ocean observations.

Scientists hope these measurements could provide information from parts of the ocean that are difficult and expensive to monitor using conventional methods. The data could eventually help researchers better understand the ocean conditions that influence hurricane development, intensity and movement.

In the eastern equatorial Atlantic, the sea surface temperatures were the highest in February and March when they went beyond 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) and those months became the warmest on record since 1982.&nbsp;

In June, the temperatures began falling mysteriously and it became the coolest in late July when the temperature reached 77 F (25 C), wrote Tuchen recently in a&nbsp;blog post.

This phenomenon has not occurred since 2013, and the scientists would have declared that there is Atlantic Niña if colder temperatures had persisted till the end of August.

In recent weeks, the cold pocket of water has warmed up so "the verdict is already quite certain that it's not gonna be classified as Atlantic Niña," Tuchen said.

Ever since the Titanic sank after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York in April 1912, the shipwreck has been explored extensively after it was first discovered in 1985 around 650 kilometres off the coast of Canada.

Records have mentioned that of&nbsp;the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died.&nbsp;

Earlier this year in May, the first full-sized 3D scan of the Titanic shipwreck was published. Experts expected the scans to reveal intricate details about the ocean liner's fateful journey across the Atlantic more than a century ago.&nbsp;

The high-resolution images were published by BBC. The scan reconstructed the wreck that lies at a depth of nearly 4,000 metres in great detail. The images were created using deep-sea mapping.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that deep-sea mapping companies Magellan Ltd and Atlantic Productions carried out the reconstruction process in 2022. They were making a documentary about the project.&nbsp;

Submersibles remotely controlled by a specialist ship spent over 200 hours surveying the wreck at the bottom of the Atlantic, taking over 700,000 images to create the scan.&nbsp;

As quoted by BBC, Magellan's Gerhard Seiffert, who led the planning for the expedition, said that the team was not allowed to touch anything "so as not to damage the wreck".&nbsp;

Seiffert had said, "The other challenge is that you have to map every square centimetre -- even uninteresting parts, like on the debris field you have to map mud, but you need this to fill in between all these interesting objects."&nbsp;

The images showed that the stern and bow of the giant liner were lying apart surrounded by debris, it looked like they were lifted from the water, revealing even the smallest details, like the serial number on one of the propellers.&nbsp;

Experts argued that the latest scans may shed more light on what exactly happened to the liner, with historians and scientists racing against time as the ship is disintegrating.&nbsp;

The Pacific is already a top concern for the government since it is thought that with China's rapid ascent, there could be war there.&nbsp;

The new Atlantic grouping, according to the official, will work to create a "sustainable ocean economy" and support ocean health, especially by addressing climate change and marine habitats.

A Spanish fishing boat carrying 24 people sank hundreds of miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, early Tuesday, leaving at least four people dead and more than a dozen missing, according to Spanish maritime officials.

Three people were rescued by another fishing boat that was nearby when the 164-foot vessel, called the Villa de Pitanxo, sank, Spain’s maritime rescue service said in a statement.

The survivors had made it into a life raft, which also held the bodies of four members of the crew of the boat, which was based in Marín, a town in Galicia, in northwestern Spain.

The sinking was “a tragedy on a scale that we cannot remember,” María Ramallo, the mayor of Marín, told reporters.

Search and rescue crews had encountered rough water, reduced visibility and windy conditions at sea, Spanish officials said.

The boat was carrying 16 Spaniards, five Peruvians and three Ghanaians, according to the rescue service. The boat sank about 280 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Spanish officials said on Twitter.

Two helicopters, a plane, and Spanish and Portuguese fishing boats were involved in the search, officials said.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said it received an emergency signal just after midnight Tuesday from a fishing vessel east of St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. A helicopter, another aircraft and several vessels were deployed.

“The search continues for the remaining crew and we remain hopeful of finding them,” the rescue center said on Twitter. “The fishing boat has not been found.”

“We remain distressed by the terrible news out of Canada about the sinking of the Villa de Pitanxo,” Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the regional president of Galicia, said on Twitter. “We are making available to the government and the shipowner all the help they need.”

Maica Larriba, a local official in Galicia, said Tuesday that contact with the vessel was lost around 5 a.m. in Spain.

In a separate news conference, Isabel Rodríguez García, the minister for territorial policy and the spokesperson of the Spanish government, confirmed the rescue of three crew members, but said she could not comment further.

“We are following with worry and preoccupation the rescue operations,” she said

The boat was built in 2004, according to Vesselfinder, a website for tracking marine traffic.

The ship’s owner is a fishing company, Grupo Nores, that specializes in fishing cod, dog fish and other species found in the North Atlantic, according to Spanish media reports.

In Marín and other nearby towns where crew members lived, relatives waited anxiously for more news about their loved ones on Tuesday.

Elisabeth Calderón, the aunt of one of the sailors, Jonathan Calderón, told local reporters that his ship had been at sea for over a month. Jonathan Calderón has a wife and two adolescent children, his aunt said.

His wife was travelling when the shipwreck occurred, she said.

French adventurer Jean-Jacques Savin has disappeared while attempting to row solo across the Atlantic, according to a statement Sunday from the Portuguese navy, which said his boat was found overturned Saturday near the Azores.

Savin’s support team initially said that he had died and that his “lifeless” body was found in the boat by Portuguese officials.

But later Sunday the Portuguese navy said Savin’s boat had been found, but not his body. “The search for the man ended at the end of the day yesterday, without it being possible to find the victim,” the navy said in a statement. “One of the merchant ships collected a waterproof bag that contained the navigator’s identification documents.”

The navy also said that “a warning” remained in effect for ships sailing in the area to be “aware of the possibility of sighting the castaway.”

Savin, 75, activated distress beacons Thursday night and early Friday, according to the statement from his support team, which was posted on his Facebook page.

Portuguese maritime authorities had located Savin’s boat, l’Audacieux (“the Audacious”), Saturday, the statement said.

“For 24 hours, we were in a state of great anxiety,” the support team said in the earlier statement. “We were hoping for a glimmer of hope, and even for good news. Unfortunately, this time the ocean was stronger than our friend, who loved navigation and the sea so much.”

On Sunday evening, the team posted a statement from Manon Savin, Savin’s daughter, which said “To date we have no official confirmation from the Portuguese maritime authorities.”

Savin began his journey from southern Portugal on Jan. 2 and posted several updates on Facebook.

On Jan. 7, the sixth day of the voyage, he described the sea as “very strong” and said that it “felt like a roller coaster.” On Jan. 10, he had traveled about 163 miles, which he said was “a good start!”

On Jan. 19, Savin posted his last diary entry on Facebook.

“I’ve run into some problems in the last 10 or so days,” he wrote. “The solar collector (which should recharge the battery of my water desalination system) has stopped working. I have been forced to use my manual desalinator, but that takes all my physical energy.

“Rest assured,” he added, “I’m not in danger!”

He was heading to the Azores, the Portuguese archipelago, he said.

“There’s a beautiful marina with an airport next door,” he wrote. “Everything I need is there.

“Despite the current difficulties of strong swells and winds, it has become easier as the wind pushes me toward the archipelago,” he wrote, adding, “Despite it all, I will absolutely not give up!”

Savin, who turned 75 during this voyage, hailed from the oyster farming town of Arès, in southwestern France. He was a former military parachutist, pilot and park ranger in Africa who did not settle quietly into his golden years.

By the time he was 71, Savin had already sailed solo across the Atlantic four times.

In 2018, he crossed the Atlantic again, this time in an orange barrel-shaped capsule that he said he had built himself. A New York Times report described the capsule, which was about 10 feet long and 6 feet 8 inches wide, as “smaller than a pickup and held upright by a concrete ballast.”

He completed the journey in 127 days. In an interview afterward, Savin described his time at sea as “complete freedom.”

“It’s hard to convey,” he said. “No one tells you what to do. There are no rules. It’s freedom.”

Though he was skilled, and was equipped with sophisticated navigation and communication tools, that voyage was not without its challenges, he conceded. “Twice, I almost collided with large ships,” he said.

Tropical Storm Peter formed in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Caribbean on Sunday, forecasters said, announcing the 16th named storm of the 2021 season.

As of 9 a.m. Eastern on Sunday, the storm was about 470 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands and expected to pass “well north of the Lesser Antilles,” according to the National Hurricane Center.
