A Florida father and his three sons are set to spend time behind bars after being convicted on fraud charges related to their audacious scheme of selling bleach as a COVID-19 cure from a fake church. Mark Grenon, aged 66, and his son Joseph Grenon, aged 36, initially fled to Colombia when federal charges were first announced against them. However, they were eventually extradited back to the United States and sentenced to the maximum term of five years behind bars. This sentence was agreed upon between the US and Colombia.

Meanwhile, Mark Grenon's other two sons, Jonathan Grenon, aged 37, and Jordan Grenon, aged 29, received more severe penalties, each being sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. Their charges included defrauding the United States by "distributing an unapproved and misbranded drug," as per New York Post.

In what seems to be straight out of a horror movie, Mexican authorities apprehended a sinister Chucky doll, not for playing games but for wielding a knife and allegedly demanding money from people.

Its owner, Carlos "N," employed the notorious "demon doll" to wield a genuine knife, sending shivers down the spines of unsuspecting locals.

The eerie incident unfolded in Monclova, a city located in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, on September 11. The owner has been arrested as well.

The doll, with a real knife in hand, was used to frighten and disturb the peace of passersby and demand money from them.

Reports suggest that Carlos was under the influence of an illicit substance when he decided to parade Chucky, a character made infamous in the 1988 horror film "Child's Play," through the city's main square. The doll, with a real knife in hand, was used to frighten and disturb the peace of passersby and demand money from them. Handcuffed, a knife still sticking out of his overalls, Chucky hunches against the wall as police hold him by his bright orange hair to take his mug shot. In advance of the anniversary of Amini's passing, Iranian authorities have stepped up their persecution of activists and protester family members. A little more than a week before the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's murder by Tehran's "morality police," Safa Aeli, Amini's uncle, was detained on Tuesday.

Iran: Mahsa Amini's uncle arrested ahead of protest anniversary

In a significant move, Iranian authorities have commenced legal proceedings against a prominent pop singer, Mehdi Yarrahi, for his recent song encouraging women to remove their mandatory headscarves. This development comes nearly a year after the tragic death of Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old whose arrest for violating the strict dress code ignited widespread protests across Iran.

Legal action against Mehdi Yarrahi

Mehdi Yarrahi, aged 41, released a song titled "Roosarito" (meaning "Your Headscarf" in Farsi) on Friday (August 25), expressing his support for the protest movement that emerged in the wake of Mahsa Amini's death. The Iranian judiciary, in a statement on its Mizan Online website, announced that a legal case had been filed against Yarrahi for releasing an "illegal song" that defies the moral and societal norms of Islamic society. However, the specific charges against Yarrahi have not been disclosed, and he is not currently in custody.

‘Woman, life, freedom’ slogan and veil removal advocacy

Yarrahi's three-minute music video incorporated the protest movement's slogan, "Woman, life, freedom." In the song, he called on women to "take off their (head)scarves," and the video featured clips of women dancing with their hair uncovered.

The legal measures against Yarrahi will also extend to another song he released in October titled "Soroode Zan" or "Woman's Anthem," which played a significant role in the protest movement, especially within universities.

Yarrahi's history of advocacy

Mehdi Yarrahi, a recipient of the Best Pop Singer award at the Fajr festival in 2018, has previously criticised authorities during his concerts, particularly highlighting the perceived marginalisation of people in his native Khuzestan province, which has a significant Arab minority.

Following Mahsa Amini's death, Iran witnessed months of protests that were often labelled as foreign-instigated "riots" by the government in Tehran. These protests led to the arrest of thousands of Iranians and resulted in the deaths of hundreds, including numerous security personnel.

The strict dress code, particularly the requirement for women to wear headscarves, has faced increasing resistance from Iranian women, especially since the mass protests called for an end to compulsory headscarves. In response, Iranian authorities have recently restarted patrols to apprehend individuals who appear in public with their hair uncovered.

Under the changes, "relying on espionage organisations and their agents" as well as the unauthorised obtaining of "documents, data, materials, and items related to national security and interests" can be considered a spying offence. WATCH | A stranded WWII ship in disputed shoal flames tensions with China The changes "have raised legitimate concerns about conducting certain routine business activities, which now risk being considered espionage", wrote Craig Allen, president of the US-China Business Council, in a recent blog. "Confidence in China's market will suffer further if the law is applied frequently and without a clear, narrow and direct link to activities universally recognised as espionage," Allen added.
In a significant development, Canadian authorities have apprehended a retired police officer, William Majcher, on charges of engaging in foreign interference on behalf of China.

The arrest comes amidst escalating tensions between Canada and China, prompting concerns about potential attempts to influence Canadian affairs by foreign entities, as reported by AFP.

Retired officer accused of serving Chinese interests

William Majcher, a 60-year-old former police officer residing in Hong Kong, stands accused of leveraging his knowledge and extensive Canadian network to obtain intelligence or provide services that allegedly benefited the People's Republic of China. Authorities launched an investigation into his activities in the autumn of 2021, suspecting that he may have contributed to Chinese government efforts to identify and intimidate individuals beyond the purview of Canadian law.

Charges and court appearance

Majcher appeared before the Longueuil courthouse outside Montreal via video conference to face charges of committing "preparatory acts for the benefit of a foreign entity" and conspiracy. He was arrested in Vancouver and is currently in custody, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for Wednesday (July 27).

China has accused Canada of aligning with the US's China policy, while Canadian authorities regularly accuse China of interfering in their public affairs.

Canadian authorities have arrested Brijesh Mishra, an Indian education agent allegedly involved in a scam of counterfeit Canadian college admission letters.

Mishra, who was attempting to enter Canada, was found inadmissible by border agents and subsequently taken into custody. On Friday, the Canada Border Services Agency charged him with offering immigration advice without a licence and counselling individuals to misrepresent or withhold information from authorities, reported Toronto Star.

Only licensed lawyers and consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants are authorised to provide immigration advice and services for a fee. Neither the Law Society of Ontario nor the consultants' college have any records indicating Mishra's membership, as education agents are not regulated in Canada.

Is Imran Khan to be arrested again? Pak Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah's controversial statements on 'ladla'

The Islamabad High Court on Friday issued a stay order on indictment of former Pak PM and PTI Chief Imran Khan in Toshakhana corruption case. This comes a day after Pakistan's Supreme Court termed Khan's arrest as illegal and ordered his immediate release. Khan was indicted on Wednesday, a day after he was arrested in Al-Qadir Trust case.
