A woman was arrested by the Texas police after she was accused of trying to sell her newborn baby on social media platform Facebook for only $150. The 21-year-old Juniper Bryson allegedly posted about the baby in September in an online group entitled 'Birth Mothers Looking for Adoptive Parent(s)'. Bryson, who has been living in Houston, said that she was willing to travel to adopt the baby. The woman allegedly reached out to a family member to ensure that the child was taken by them and not placed into foster care and further noted that the baby was drug-positive. "She needs someone there during labour and to take the baby boy home. She doesn't want him going into foster care," read the charging documents. Nothing crazy at all." Woman reaches out to families to sell her newborn Bryson wrote to at least seven people and appealed to them to adopt her newborn. Many of the responses came from those who were either struggling to get pregnant or were same-sex couples. Some of these couples were willing to drive through the night to pick up the infant. However, when they were on their way, Bryson asked for money. "Juniper sent him a picture of the food she was trying to order, and he sent her money, a total of $25 via Apple Pay to complete the food delivery. (The prospective parent) stated that 3.5 hours into their trip to Houston, she asked them to send her $150," stated charging documents. Bryson then blocked the cellphone number of the prospective parents but later unblocked them to state, "If the baby wasn't worth $200 to them, then screw all." Who adopted the baby? Local woman Wendy Williams, who was living in Houston, decided to adopt the baby and even sent Bryson an Uber when she was in labour for her to reach the hospital. The baby was born on September 24, and Williams remained with Bryson during her eight hours. She also chose the name of the baby and later adopted her. "I felt a real bond between a mom and a baby. I felt a connection as if he were biologically mine," said Williams, while speaking to KTRK. (With inputs from agencies)

The Park Fire in no time swelled into a massive wildfire in California and eventually became the state's largest blaze of this season as it burned down structures and more than 120,000 acres of land and led to the evacuation of thousands of people.

The authorities on Thursday (July 25) said that the wildland fire was allegedly started by a man who had pushed a torched car into a 60-foot embankment.

In an investigation, it was found that the vehicle was on fire when it was pushed near the Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park before 3 pm (local time) on Wednesday (July 24).

Some witnesses had reported seeing the suspect leaving the area calmly after throwing away the car while other people ran seeing the rapidly spreading fire.

The investigators quickly responded to the fire and secured the area as they started to search for clues about the unknown man who dumped the car which was on fire.

In the investigation, the officials found the identity of the man after which a warrant was issued by a local judge and he was finally arrested.

The suspect identified as 48-year-old Ronnie Dean Stout II was arrested and put behind prison without bail, as stated by Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

"The car went down an embankment approximately 60 feet and burned completely, spreading flames that caused the Park Fire," said Ramsey, in a statement.

As the skies of the West Coast remained filled with black smoke rising from the blaze, the Park Fire in Butte County and the Durkee Fire in Oregon, became the largest wildfire in the nation.

The Butte County Sheriff's Department had to order evacuations in the area's rural foothill communities because of the wildfire.

More than 1,100 firefighters tried to douse the flames by cutting fire lines with bulldozers and using helicopters as they tried to stop the fire from reaching the homes of people living in the populated areas of north Chico, said the authorities.

"The fire is well established. Fire personnel are currently focusing on evacuations and structure defence while concurrently building direct containment lines utilizing bulldozers, fire crews and fire engines," said Cal Fire, in an updated statement.

"More resources have been ordered and are inbound from various areas throughout Northern California," it added.

The Park Fire alone became the state's largest wildfire in 2024 as it burned more than 124,000 acres and also destroyed many structures. Watch: Devastating wildfire wreaks havoc in Greece The Butte County Sheriff's Department had to order evacuations in the area's rural foothill communities because of the wildfire. The billionaire founder of South Korean internet conglomerate Kakao was arrested early Tuesday, a Seoul court said, accused of manipulating stock prices during the acquisition of K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment.

Founded in 2010, Kakao has grown to be a sprawling empire and owns everything from a major online bank to South Korea's largest taxi-hailing app, plus KakaoTalk -- the country's biggest messaging app which is installed on 90 percent of phones.

It also has a vast entertainment portfolio, encompassing music labels and talent management, which it augmented significantly last year by securing a controlling 39.87 percent stake in SM Entertainment, becoming its largest shareholder.

Prosecutors accuse Kakao of buying 240 billion won ($173 million) worth of SM shares on 553 occasions in February 2023 at inflated prices in a deliberate effort to thwart a takeover bid by HYBE, the agency behind K-pop megastars BTS.

HYBE had purchased a 14.8-percent stake from SM's founder, Lee Soo-man, and proposed buying more shares at 120,000 won each, but withdrew its attempt after SM's stock prices soared.

The Seoul Southern District Court approved an arrest warrant for Kakao founder Kim Beom-su, citing risks of him fleeing and destroying evidence, it said in a statement.

Authorities have also questioned other Kakao executives, prosecutors said.

At an emergency Kakao group meeting last week, Kim said that it was a "pity" that the situation had occurred while "group members are working together to renovate management and innovate AI-based technology".

He later said the charges against him were "not true".

"I believe the facts will be revealed in the end as I have never ordered or tolerated any illegal activities," Kim said, according to a press release sent to AFP by the company on Tuesday.

Experts said that the detention of the firm's head could cause problems for the company.

"Kakao's AI-based innovation will likely meet difficulty due to the absence of the head of the company, and the group will have to focus its efforts on eliminating total risk and judicial risk," said Choi Kyoung-jin, a law professor at South Korea's Gachon University.

"The risk of the group due to the leader being absent from Kakao will probably continue for a considerable period of time," he added.

"Kakao will need to reorganise its governance."

India's Supreme Court ordered NewsClick editor Prabir Purkayastha's release after it observed that his arrest by the Delhi Police in the anti-terror case was 'invalid'.

India's Supreme Court ordered NewsClick editor Prabir Purkayastha's release after it observed that his arrest by the Delhi Police in the anti-terror case was 'invalid'. A bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and BR Gavai on Wednesday (May 15) said that the court was not provided with the remand copy which made his arrest void. "There is no hesitation in the mind of the court that the grounds of arrest were not provided...which vitiates arrest. The appellant is entitled to release from custody after the Pankaj Bansal case. The remand order is invalid," Justice Mehta said. According to the top court, the grounds for arrest should be provided in writing to the accused person in custody. Also Read: Jackie Shroff moves Delhi High Court against unauthorised use of his name, personality traits Speaking about the Supreme Court's order, Advocate Arshdeep Khurana said, "Supreme Court has held the arrest and the remand proceedings to be illegal and has directed the release of Purkayastha. We have been directed to furnish the bail bond before the trial court. "This is a major and big relief because we have been maintaining from the beginning that the entire proceedings against him were illegal and the manner of arrest was illegal which has now been upheld by the Supreme Court," he added. Why did the Delhi Police arrest Prabir Purkayastha? Delhi Police had arrested Purkayastha on October 3 under the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, days after a New York Times investigation accused NewsClick of receiving funds from a network which promoted Chinese propaganda. In the chargesheet, which was filed in March and ran through 8,000 pages with different annexures, NewsClick and Purkayastha were accused by the Delhi Police of promoting Chinese propaganda and terror funding. A case was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against NewsClick on October 11 for breaching the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. In its investigation, the Delhi Police claimed that Neville Roy Singham, who is an active member of the Communist Party of China's propaganda department, had fraudulently injected funds into the portal. Three Germans have been arrested on suspicion of working with the Chinese secret service to hand over technology that could be used for military purposes, potentially helping to strengthen China's navy, German officials said on Monday.

The arrests came a week after Chancellor Olaf Scholz travelled to China to press Beijing on its support for Russia's wartime economy and to raise issues of intellectual property theft and fair market access.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the government was monitoring what she called a significant threat posed by Chinese espionage in business, industry and science.

"We look very closely at these risks and threats and have clearly warned and raised awareness about them so that protective measures are increased everywhere," she said in a statement.

In this case, the issue of German innovative technologies that can be used for military purposes was "particularly sensitive", she added.

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in a statement: "At the time of their arrest, the accused were in further negotiations about research projects that could be particularly useful for expanding China's maritime combat power."

The Chinese embassy in Berlin said Beijing firmly rejected accusations that it carried out spying activities in Germany.

"We call on Germany to desist from exploiting the espionage accusation to politically manipulate the image of China and defame China," a spokesperson for the embassy said in an emailed statement.

Prosecutors identified the suspects as Herwig F. and Ina F, a married couple who run a company in Dusseldorf, and Thomas R., described by prosecutors as an agent for an unidentified employee of China's Ministry of State Security (MSS).

The couple concluded a cooperation agreement with a German university through their company, which involved preparing a study for the MSS employee on machine parts that can be used for marine engines such as in warships, prosecutors said in a statement.

The suspects also purchased a special laser from Germany on behalf of and with payment from the MSS, and exported it to China without authorisation, according to the prosecutors, who did not specify what the laser could be used for.

The arrests were made on the basis of information gathered by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, prosecutors said.

Last week, Germany arrested two Russian-German nationals on suspicion of spying for Russia. They were said to have plotted sabotage attacks aimed at undermining Germany's military support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
